In short

The episode covers (1) mental load and dividing household chores fairly, including “mental load” vs “who does what” lists; (2) toddler communication—how 22-month-olds answer questions via prosody before full comprehension; (3) whether parents have a “favorite child” and the harms of preferential treatment; plus parenting talk, travel, and several sponsor reads.

Guests

No external guests appear. The hosts are Jules, Alex, and Harrison (Harrison calls in for a “take” on mental load). The episode also references “Diana,” “Tate,” and “Rocky/Bubba” as family members, not guests.

Key claims

  • Preferential treatment is common (cited: 74% of mothers, 70% of fathers), but differential treatment can be acceptable if openly communicated and justified.
  • Non-favored children show worse outcomes: more mental health/behavior/school problems and weaker self-regulation; favored children can face pressure and worse parent-relationship outcomes.
  • Toddlers match question tone (prosody) and may answer “yes/no” mechanics before meaning fully develops (comprehension cited as closer to 24–27 months).

Notable examples

  • Jules’ Substack breaks down roles: doctor appointments (dad), remembering birthdays (mom), planning meals (both), bills/budget/taxes/insurance (dad), and “Venmo and hope for the best.”
  • Toddler example: when asked “did you have fun?” she answers enthusiastically if the question is enthusiastic; she may not respond to food questions until she’s processing the actual item.
  • “Favorite child” discussion includes a volleyball analogy about tough love motivating one child but cracking another.

Did you miss me? I did. One second. I'm just... I'm talking Jules. Okay. Okay, great. The people missed you. Someone commented on the episode that Harrison was not on.

0:44Just me and Alex. And they said, I love Harrison's takes. They're so candid and great. I said, Harrison's not on this episode. I called in. Oh. Did you give a take? I gave a take on the mental load. laughs that makes sense jules i was with you i was like yeah what i was taking it as a slight to us i was like oh okay all right ready okay welcome back to another episode of two parents in a podcast it's a it's do you like the word hump day or no nope yeah i don't love it either nope don't like it middle of the week happy middle of the week you guys we've got a good episode today I was on my way here and I was thinking about I'm just gonna move my mic and I hope it doesn't squeak in everyone's ears I was gonna say why didn't like hump day but please move on okay why don't you like hump day tell the class because I think that the connotation of hump day is like implies that there's like a negative connotation to it and I don't think that we should live for the weekends well I think that that is something that you taught me you you have fun on Monday Tuesday Saturday yeah hump day all days of the week but I do agree like I guess it is kind of like a mountain and like Wednesday is allegedly the peak but um yeah so I have a great day today I just don't like the term hump oh I love a Wednesday because tomorrow's Thursday So much to look forward to.

2:23And then Tuesdays are great because... Also, we can enjoy the present moment. I do enjoy the present moment. Sounds like Harrison wants you to ask about his date today.

2:34That's what you're picking up? Is that what you want? Okay. What's your date today? That wasn't what I was going to ask. I'm playing Marsh tonight. No, you're not. You're playing backgammon. I'm going to play backgammon. Is backgammon going to be... I'm going to play backgammon tonight and then I make a prediction on if I think it's like, has the potential to be a thing. And maybe I'll try to put it into. You need less things. Like, okay, so I posted Ben, and I was very careful with my wording. But did you see my steak and fries on Monday? And how did I word it? Something about your favorite Monday night meal.

3:12Every Monday night. But I said lately. Not that it's every Monday night. And somebody responded and said, I'm sure Harrison is so excited that we now have a meal for a day. And I was like, great reference. But no, it's just lately. It's just as of late. Did you see the pump fake on Taylor Farms? Yes. Big pump fake. Yeah. We discussed. What's the latest? Are we talking about two different things? No. No, for the parasite? Yeah, so what's your latest knowledge on this? Was that they were like suing the FDA or something for... False claims. False claims. Yeah, that's pretty crazy. Yeah, it's gnarly.

3:49That's pretty crazy. Yeah. And they should win. Well, I didn't actually know about the lawsuit. I just saw that it came out. It was a false positive. Well, the Washington Post posted something yesterday that's like, basically, you still shouldn't eat lettuce. Like, we're still just not sure where it's coming from. And it's more than Taco Bell. Like, it's, so yeah, no lettuce. No lettuce. But how many cases are we sitting with? Last we checked was 7 ,000. Yeah, that's a good question. Because when I look around at restaurants, people are eating lettuce and produce pretty freely, so. 11 ,500. I don't know.

4:33Well, if you would notice at breakfast this morning, I had to take the arugula off of my egg sandwich, which arugula shouldn't be on an egg sandwich to begin with. Yes, it should. Oh, what? Yeah, I think it's a really nice touch. okay okay Jules had to take hers off yeah smart smart move Jules yeah yeah so you still you've still held strong yes so have I I said to my mom no one influences my food choices more than you guys because I've had steak and fries three dinners in a row no way it is the best meal it is so easy and it's so good it's like I look so I look forward to it but I can't cook my steak like that steak was terrible I need you to do it I did judge the cook on the steak a little which is crazy for me who likes well done steak.

5:17It was... It didn't look well done. It looked like steamed or something. It was so gross. How did you cook it? Just try to do what you do. I even heated up the skillet and then once it was hot I put the oil in it and then I tried to do it back and forth but it just looked like raw tuna so then I chopped it up and seared it and it just wasn't good. It was not good. You gotta get the cast iron very hot. It was very hot but it obviously wasn't hot enough because it didn't do what yours did which like erupts in steam i was going to talk about how i was driving to the office today and i was very thankful for our job because i think it's cool that we do this three days a week and that i enjoy doing it it's a lot of fun and then we need to discuss your you were gone i was gone quick in and out went to minnesota good old minneapolis for a target meeting yeah we're up there with our friends at target how did it go it's good good they're a Great partners of ours.

6:15Very appreciative of them. We love you, Target. Okay, what else? What else have we, anything to share? How many meetings did you have? Well, we were up there. We just launched our turkey bacon product with them. So talking about some big exciting plans for that. Next week, you're going to see us, when you go into, when you walk into a Target, starting next week, you'll see the turkey bacon on the end caps. Oh, I can't wait to go. Yeah. And the ones in Texas too? It should be in pretty much every Target. And so can we show them, if they're watching, can we show them these flock bacon strips? Turkey bacon strips?

6:55In case we have two flavors. Should we do a taste test? Yeah, let's taste test. So we have a sweet and spicy, we have an original. And what's so fabulous about these here, if you're watching, if you're not a little ASMR. What? This is like a QVC commercial. Yeah, it's very QVC, I love it. Yeah, I'm very excited about these because this is my favorite product. Although I have been having the chicken strips, is that what we call them? Sticks. Sticks, golly. I mean, I have just memory loss. Chicken sticks, yes. I've been having one a day. Diana and I both have. Okay. So I'm opening the original flavor.

7:2610 grams of protein in this bad boy, which is, I'm not kidding you when I tell you this tastes like turkey bacon. Yeah, it's an unbelievable product. It's actually an unbelievable product. Okay. Please, if you're on YouTube or if you're on Spotify video, please watch me. is like, please look at this. Like, incredible. And I didn't have to cook it. On the go. If you have misophonia, take your headphones off. What is that? When you don't like to listen to people chill. But like some people, it's like visceral. Oh, really? Yeah, it's called misophonia. So this product is available exclusively at Target.

8:05Only place you can buy it. This is, it is so good. Do you know what's good about it? it tastes um like a hybrid it's a it's a much softer okay okay if three things had a baby so the three things would be beef jerky also a chicken stick and then what was the last one i was gonna say oh bacon real life turkey bacon it's so good yeah we're really happy with with how it how it came out you want some i would love some thank you so the thing about it is it's just a really really good high protein snack that's easy to eat okay and it's different there's it's so good it's so good one thing that i love about it is there's nothing else like it on the market correct god it's good actually it's like so good So the other thing that Harrison does whenever we look at food is he always turns over to read the ingredient label to make sure we can pronounce all the ingredients in there.

9:09And I'm proud to report uncured turkey bacon. Great. Water, brown sugar, honey, which you can really taste the brown sugar in the honey. We've got ground. Not too much. Not too much. Only a couple grams of sugar. Ground pepper. Yeah, actually three sugars, which is incredible. This is 50 calories. this whole pack this is a great snack thank you I feel like we're okay I appreciate your support I really do but we talk about like doing a product exclusively with Target like when because I feel like we see that all the time like I don't know I've seen like deodorant brands that have an exclusive Target flavor or whatever is the idea that you like launched a target and then it goes elsewhere or it's like that will always be a target exactly exactly so we asked which one there's two options no so so typically when you want when you launch an exclusive product with a retail partner it's available with them for a certain period of time before it's available uh elsewhere why why is target so good at that it's always exclusively at target they're just good at getting in with brands yeah you know different retailers value exclusives in different way i would say that that most retailers do it do a great job with it it's becoming more and more prevalent and it's a win-win for the retailers and it's a win-win for uh for the brands and often the retailer is part of the product creation process so like when we showed this to target for the first time like it was in clear bags off of a sample run and you know we had some really healthy two-way dialogue on what we thought the product should ultimately be and that was about a year ago today.

11:01I'm also reading this now. The back of this says snacks straight from the bag. Obvious but not obvious. Toss it in your sandwich. It would be good to cut up on a salad. It would be so good to cut up on a salad which we're not eating right now. When we are eating salads again this would be delicious. Some people are still eating it. I can't believe this product doesn't exist. I really can't. We're going to talk about that later. yeah we are not this product but other products that we can't believe don't exist okay that's where rubber gets her little her her shake from you sometimes ever like goes back and forth like this it's yeah so thank you for the for the flock turkey bacon strips air time uh and hopefully they're available now in nationally at target but not every target uh in in in the middle of the aisles but next week is when uh is when you'll start seeing them on the end caps we need to remember to make that announcement and this will go visit a store with Bubber well of course this is my and Rocky can he come I know he won't know he's there but yes of course Rocky he's been talking a lot you guys know we've got a busy house three days a week we've got two toddlers two babies and four adults all under one roof and you guys know we are one of those houses we wear our shoes in the house so between the constant foot traffic the snack spills which are very constant and everything that the kids drag in our carpets definitely take a really big hit and that is why we are obsessed with tumble they have a proprietary spill proof surface that causes liquids to beat up on top of the rug instead of sink in the rug you guys and when you need a deeper clean tumble rugs are fully machine washable which means you can literally wash them in your washing machine all tumble rugs are okio tech certified that means they're safe for kids pets and anyone spending time on the floor and rocky right now is spending a lot of time on the because we're doing tummy time.

12:49And my favorite part, you guys, is how amazing they look because they look like designer rugs. So machine washable rugs made better. For a limited time only, our listeners get 10 % off plus free shipping at tumbleliving.com slash two parents. That's T-U-M-B-L-E living.com forward slash two parents. And after you purchase, they're going to ask you, where'd you hear about us? Please tell them that you heard about them right here on this show. My question about Target is like when you go, because you were at the HQ, right? Yep. so you know at walmart are they like the walmart store

13:23yes does target have a target and the hq or the the their standalones so underneath so like when you go into target headquarters you take an escalator up to go to the meeting room and then what to go to like the lobby check-in and then on the main floor there's actually a target store okay good i'm really was hoping that there would be a target store that's beautiful Have you guys ever been to the Hamburger U in Chicago? The Hamburger U? Yeah, McDonald's. It's like McDonald's training facility in Chicago. And they've got a McDonald's at the main floor that people can go to. And they have stuff from all of the international McDonald's.

14:01It's really cool. That's worth going to. This is a trip I would love to make. Yeah, that to me is really good. I would enjoy that. The Hamburger U. Oh, like university. Yeah. It's their training facility, but anyone can go and get Hawaii at McDonald's. You can get Spam and stuff like that on the menu. You can go get that at that McDonald's. Spam? Yeah. Okay. It's good. Okay. I trust. I trust that McDonald's knows what they're doing. We're going to review my – it was okay. Whoa, tripped over my words. so we had a free substack yesterday which means all of you can go access it you don't have to pay but jules is telling us now that you can listen to substack yeah someone commented yesterday on spotify you can and i tried it you just go to the article and you press play at the top and it reads it to you who reads it just a voice a girl play it i'll play i'll play it and then did you see what i sent the two parents account this morning no i haven't been on my phone okay so does listening to an audiobook count as reading oh did you send does reading a book count as listening to an audiobook everyone was sending that to me from the from the today show oh no so this is the last page the last page is very important here while there are notable distinctions between the two modalities research has found that people are able to similarly recall and interpret context context regardless of whether they listen to the book or they read it okay that said reading print pages engages more areas of the brain than listening to an audiobook.

15:37As a result, this strengthens the lines of communication between those areas of the brain. A mental process audiobook, a mental process that audiobooks do not prompt. All the listeners have been sending me this meme that says, why is everyone asking, does listening to audiobooks count as reading, when we should be asking does reading count as listening to audiobooks it's a great it's i think we just won the debate okay this is this is what it sounds like okay it's out of diapers mom keeping everyone's schedule straight both and somehow neither planning meals both remembering sunscreen mom planning vaccines dad mom's job is remembering to take everyone's temperature after.

16:23Okay I need to read it. This is off. I can't even type. You can listen in two acts too. I listened to your whole article yesterday after they told me that. What? Yeah. My jaw was on the floor with the article yesterday. Did you like it or no? I didn't tell Harrison. I just wrote an article about how we divide the chores in our house. I just thought that that would have been an article that I maybe would have got a heads up on. like that felt like a very intimate sharing into our lives that you know i was like oh here we are and i just opened it and i read it and i was like i really hope oh jules is making a face no just keep going did it stop recording we're just gonna need to get a new one it died it didn't die i just looked it had 92 on our little camera that has that that reminds me I think it's overheated.

17:16Oh. Because of the ring light. Keep going. Okay. So you opened it and what? And you thought what? I really hope what? I was just like, this is a lot to be sharing with the world. And I was wondering if there would be anything in there that maybe I would have felt I didn't want shared. Aw. I'm sorry. That's the world that I live in. There was nothing, though, that overly jumped off the page to me. So what I did for the listener was I wrote a... Actually, I think, though, one thing that's important, Harrison, is I always do tell you about my sub stacks because I like to tell you about them. Not anymore.

18:04I haven't known about the last two. Okay. Well, I wrote about our roles in the house and who does what. because the reason I wrote this was because you were gone. And it got me to thinking how you didn't leave me a list of things that I need to do with the kids. And in the sub-sec, I put imagine that, ha-ha, like that would be so role reversed. But also when I leave, like next week, I'm going to the Hilary Duff concert, which we decided we're going to. When I go to the Hilary Duff concert, I won't leave you with a list of things to do, you know, a schedule, anything like that. And I'm very proud of us for that.

18:37So then what I did was... I have a question. What? Can we talk about your decision to go to the concert? No, hold on. I want to break down the sub stack. Okay. So I wrote, okay, so I did like the mental load, right? So who does what in our family? Doctor's appointments. Dad schedules those. Remembering birthdays. Mom. Knowing we're out of diapers. Mom. Keeping everyone's schedule straight. Both, but somehow also neither. Planning meals. Both. Remembering sunscreen. Mom. Planning vaccines. Dad. And you know, as I went through it all, Okay, so then we get to the finance section. And I said I was laughing.

19:13I couldn't even type this section without laughing. It's just dad. Just fully dad. Bills, budget, taxes, insurance, all of it. Dad. And then I put iVenmo and hope for the best. Usually it's the wrong amount. Parenting responsibility. So I just really went through and I broke it down as to who does what. And I think that I encourage all families to do the same thing. Did you feel like I overshared?

19:38I'm so sorry. if you thought that I did. No, I was just, it was like, when I got it, I think when it was sent, I was on the flight and I got the email. Yeah, you get notifications. Whoa. What are we telling the world about today? But you thought it was good, right? Yeah, I thought it was well done. You didn't enjoy the sub stack? I did. One thing about me is I'm more likely to press send than I am to wait. Because if I wait, then the sub stack's going out around seven or eight. If I need approval from somebody, so I just pressed send. And in your defense, if you'd sent it to me, there would have been something there that I would have latched on to that isn't a big deal.

20:19Exactly. In this article, it was very good. Yeah. No, I think your sub-stacks are phenomenal. I really do. Thank you. And I think that people would enjoy reading this article. Me as well. Thank you, Jules. I agree. I'm not getting that from Harrison so I'm glad I'm getting it from somebody. Well, you share a lot of information on there. this was like a lot about our life which was just a lot yeah sorry i i usually run them sorry what my hot take like it wasn't there wasn't anything that hasn't been shared before but it was a lot of good information shared all in one place and i i feel like it is different when you're talking about it versus like when you put pen to paper on it and when like you just don't know what's going to come out like you described our relationship completely from your view it's great that it aligned with how I think about things but that was just like a scary thing to see in my inbox considering how many people read that yeah is what I'm saying clear like does that make sense of course yeah I just would assume once you read it you'd be like wow that was there's so many hamburgers I had yesterday very accurate how many five ew how did it because on the way back from, should I tell my travel stories?

21:36Sure. Are they interesting? Sure. Actually, let's talk about people from Minnesota and then the travel stories will all come in together. It'll be beautiful. Okay. So here's, I'm just trying to think about what way to go first. Okay, so I'm supposed to be on a two o 'clock flight home yesterday. Oh, Bubber's learned the word sorry, but keep going, yeah. I have noticed that. Barbara also learned how to play catch. She played catch last night. She stepped on Diana's foot and said, sorry. Phenomenal. She's in the right context. That's incredible. I did not know that. Go away from one day, look what I missed.

22:12We're also gonna talk about some things that are, I think, very important down here about talking to her. Oh, Joel's gave me the rundown. And I can't wait to get into that. Okay, so I'm on a, I'm supposed to be on a 2 o 'clock flight. I get a notification that the flight has pushed to 5. I also look at the incoming flight coming from New York. It is not left. So it's saying two to five, but I feel like it's going to be later than that. I want to get home so badly. Right. Being away from one night, that is. Fine. Yeah, it's just like it's needed. Like it was a very necessary trip. And I don't want to miss any family time that that I don't need to.

22:56So I'm fully committed to getting home. Plus, I have a very fun 8 p.m. dinner last night. And I see that there's a 220 flight leaving, flying into San Antonio. And so we are, so I'm like, all right, I'm going to book it to try and catch that flight. Because at first, my flight was delayed from 2 to 3, then 3 to 4, and then 4 to 5. Okay. so at four to five is when i i fully made the commitment so we just sat down for lunch at that moment and i'm like you know what if we leave now i'll get there on time i'll be able to make that flight so the waitress comes by and what i've learned about people first any views on like the on that pivot to flying to san antonio and take your car home i would do the same thing yeah it's an underappreciated part of austin that most other cities don't have which is the fact that like worst case you have three airports to fly into that are within an hour and a half to three hours to get home it's almost like the same as manhattan now that i'm thinking about it very true like jfk to newark or laguardia and an hour sometimes from any of them yes but but houston and Dallas are, I mean, three hours is a lot.

24:26Yeah. The hour and a half was a nothing burger. Oh, San Antonio. Yeah. I'll flag we're losing me, so we're going to land the plane here. I could tell. For lack of a better analogy. You guys know I've been saying for years when it comes to therapy, you've got to play offense, not defense. And like we just talked about on the podcast, my mental load has been so full lately. We've got two kids under two, and there's a lot going on. And I get overwhelmed. And I think that's just the reality of being a parent sometimes. And that's why I think it's so important to have therapy in your back pocket before you really need it.

24:57That's the thing about therapy. Offense on it, not defense. Start it before you need it. So when those overwhelming moments happen, you already have the tools to help manage the stress and work through what you're feeling. And you have the ability to communicate better. And that's where Rula comes in, you guys. Rula is a healthcare company that makes finding a therapist feel actually doable. They have in-network covered care for most major insurance plans, and the average copay for a RULA patient, you guys, is just$15. And sometimes therapy can be so expensive and therefore unattainable. But with RULA, they really get rid of that cost barrier.

25:34RULA partners with a network of over 23 ,000 therapists and psychiatrists nationwide. RULA supports every step of the way of your mental health journey, from finding the right therapist to scheduling appointments and monitoring your progress. thousands of parents are already using Rula to get affordable high-quality therapy that's actually covered by insurance and helping them and their families and you know what guys so can you so visit Rula.com slash two parents to get started that's R-U-L-A dot com slash two parents okay so we're gonna totally pivot and we're gonna talk about people from Minnesota okay okay tell us I think they're the most talkative people they ask the most questions of any people in America.

26:16I love a person that asks questions. Do the people know this about me that I love somebody that asks questions? I couldn't believe how many questions were. Every Uber driver, every, um, whether it's the Uber drivers, the workout classes, the folks at the restaurant, like questions. I love it. Like we're sitting there before a meeting, wait till the restaurant comes over. Like, Hey guys, like, what are you working on? Oh. Yeah. And are you reciprocating the questions? Well, yeah, very nice. They're very nice people. Totally. Like Uber drivers, like very, hey, like it sounds like you're in from out of town.

26:51What are you doing from out of town? Like driving by the Minnesota Twins Stadium, I comment to all of their friends, it would have been fun if there's a Twins game. And they give us, oh, yeah, the Twins games are great. They changed them. They're now at 12. At 7 o 'clock, they used to be at 2. Like they're just very, a lot of questions. I love, I love, one of my favorite qualities about somebody is if they ask questions. Yeah, a lot of questions. So I was just, I saw online that there's just like, there's two primary ways that people relate to other people. Yes. What is, what are they? Well, one is through asking questions and one is through sharing their own experiences that are similar.

27:27And I think you guys are two of each, one of each. You ask a lot of questions. Harrison like can always find a parallel of like something he did in Hong Kong or in San francisco to like continue the conversation yes i totally agree jules and i think that i don't know i okay we said on monday if you're going to a dinner or something bring one of the topics we were discussing is like we talk about a lot of topics on here current events or ideas right what bathroom should a dad take his daughter into is a perfect example of like for the group chat okay so we were saying break to have a good conversation bring a couple of those things but the other thing is just ask questions like even if they're one of your best friends like really how how is your week going really truly how's your week going or um i don't know have you i'm thinking i can only give some basic surface level questions but like two or three questions unbelievable but that's like a skill that you have because i don't have that skill I relate to people by like sharing back my own experience and I think that that can sometimes be perceived as rude I've totally learned that from you and I I recently executed it in a way that I was very proud of I also think one question that I asked that I think you thought was rude but I really like it is what do you do I think that you ask it too aggressively okay I love knowing what someone does if i meet them at a party like because a lot of times we're going to a lot of kids birthday parties recently is where this is most applicable and you start talking to the parents and i don't know anything about these parents like i'm starting from scratch here so where are you from okay cool so you're from nebraska great what brought you here work and then you say what type of work that is totally fine i find that on the work thing sometimes you're like you know hey you know my name is jerry hey jerry nice to meet you what do you do for work i feel like somebody just comes up like a little it's like whoa whoa like let's naturally it's never like that maybe it is but okay so it's not it's not nearly as aggressive as that but i think like asking about what you do to work when there's a natural transition into that makes sense to me i think sometimes you jump that transition because like i don't know maybe you're getting bored with what else is being discussed.

29:58No, but I think what someone does is such a large part of their life most of the time. Totally. 40, 60 hours a week, like, it's kind of a no-brainer. What do you do? What are you doing for those hours? Do you know what I asked someone the other day? What? I was like, you know what? I haven't asked you this in a long time, but how are things in your relationship? That is such a good question. Wow. And the reason why I asked is because they were telling me about someone else we know who got divorced pretty shortly after having a newborn. Oh. And I was like, I was like, well, like, I know how much is going on in my friend's life and their family's life.

30:43But, like, Ivan asked that hard-hitting question of, like, how is your true relationship? What a good question. It said it's going phenomenal. And he talked all about the different nice things and the growth of the relationship. But like it really encouraged me to start asking that a little more. Obviously to like the close circle. Where it's appropriate. It's a very personal question. I also like asking guys. You've made me feel comfortable with this. We have a friend who does investing of some kind. Like I don't even know what he actually does. but I always ask him like what are we investing in and he just tells it to me you gotta ask me and bleep the name I have no idea here talk I was like are we doing okay like I have no idea how and we're and so then what do you how do you get money back from that like and he's just like I thought this man if I ask it I was like I'm just gonna dip my toe in the water here and see how this goes because I don't really understand what he does but I think it's kind of cool so I asked and he just walked me through it one night at dinner and he was like so sweet and I and so I just I love asking those types of questions that are a little bit different I guess so yeah asking questions is a good idea what were we talking about you were just telling me how bored you were with what I was saying well I mean okay so we know that Austin has you know 74 airports nearby you flew into San Antonio and you ubered and you got to come home and play catch with Bubba tell us about that because I was gone at this point so i got home and she was upstairs in the playroom and uh and so i was bringing her down and when i was bringing her down she took ball so she wanted to bring the ball and then um so i i was down there in the kitchen with her and she threw the ball to me and i was like you know what like i'm gonna try and throw the ball back to her so i said army's out and she put the armies out and i like i threw it in and she actually can catch.

32:39I cannot wait to go play catch with her today. I cannot wait. She can really catch it, but only off of her chest. I cannot wait to play catch with her. And the claps she gives herself after she catches it and then throws it is unbelievable. And she kept pushing me to position me on where she wanted me to throw it to. She's got a good arm. She's a bit ambidextrous. She throws better with her right, but she will throw with her left, I've noticed. Yeah. She's doing a lot of throwing, too, so we might need to investigate a sports situation. Were you aware of the cuddle that went on this morning? Yeah.

33:15Big cuddle this morning. So cute. Cuddle. She's just such a fun age. Okay, so let's discuss talking to her. So yesterday, when I had Tate, we saw some of our neighbors, and they were like, Tate, did you have fun in Colorado? And she was like, yeah. And they were like, did you have fun in D.C.? And she was like, yeah. and I was like she doesn't know like that that was Colorado like she heard us saying it was Colorado so it turns out which I find this the most interesting thing about this language situation that I find is she's reading you not the question so if you ask it enthusiastically like did you have so much fun today she'll match your energy with a yes okay as opposed to a flat or concerned like so you didn't like it Then she'll say no.

34:06And that's called prosodic. Is that how you prosodic matching? And it's exactly what 22 months old are. They're wired to do. So when you're like, Bubba, do you want to go take a bath? She's like, yeah. Yes. But we, this is like, this didn't exist two weeks ago. No, it's very, very new. Like I used to, I would always say like, how was your day? Did you have a good sleep? And she actually wouldn't answer those questions. and like truly within the past few days it feels like she started to answer uh answer the questions and she can only answer them in a certain way and i've also noticed that like there's gaps so when you ask her about food like do you like so i'll give her something i'll go yummy do you like that she won't respond like i don't think she's processed that she can want food but then once their food she wants she can then either like it or not like it right but sometimes she spits out her food i've started noticing yes but that's only when she's like when she isn't aware of what she's eating so okay so real yes or no comprehension doesn't kick in until 24 to 27 months which is close we're at 22 months right so right now she's practicing the mechanics before the meaning catches up so we're really close yeah that makes sense and then what she does understand so she understands concrete questions tied to something in front of her do you want the ball yes she can understand step directions like one step directions right like take this to data she can do that and she understands around 50 words plus familiar people like she knows where everybody on our block lives and she understands objects like ball pool it was pretty cute so we're on our way to her being able to answer us back for real but we'll ask her do you want to go to winnie's house yes and if she doesn't want to go yet, she'll say no.

35:57Maybe because she wants to stay in bed a little longer. It's just the cutest age ever. I'm very obsessed with this age. Yeah, I mean, it's a consistent theme of parenting so far. We're very blessed. Do we want to discuss? Cut to that laugh that she did. Yep, yep. She always laughed at me. That's just Harrison's go-to move when he doesn't have anything else to say. Thank you, Jules. I literally know. I'm like, okay, I'll figure out something to talk about. Okay. Does anyone actually have a favorite child? So I was holding Rocky the other day and I was thinking about how when I was pregnant with him, I thought, oh my gosh, how can I ever love somebody as much as I love Tate?

Read the full transcript

36:38I'm just hoping it'll happen. And then the minute that baby came out, your heart, it just grows, right? And I was like, wow, I love these two kids so unfathomably much. Like I don't have the words to describe it, but I know all the other parents will know what I'm saying. And I thought, how do people have favorite kids? So I posted that to the internet, and in come the comments. And turns out, favorite kid for some people comes when they get older. One's going to cause a little less havoc than the other. Interesting. And that might be the favorite. Interesting, but not surprising. Really? Yeah.

37:20Yeah. Like right now they're bundles of love and joy. And, but I think it's very important that as parents, like, and they get older, we recognize how that is, um, recognize the negative consequences that occur when you do play favorites and to make sure that we stay as neutral as, as one can towards your, your kids in terms of, of favoritism. Okay, so in terms of favoritism, right? Yeah. So research finds that 74 % of mothers and 70 % of fathers report that they give preferential treatment to one child over the other. Now, I want to talk about preferential treatment. Because that's not having a favorite one and they can kind of go.

38:07Because I think often you may even give preferential treatment to the kid that you think needs more help. and as such may even be less of the favorite right so it's it's more so like inequality of of focus and attention correct but i think this is i think is where the problems become well well alex will get into it but like what i read is that you can have differential treatment of kids as long as like the whole family communicates about it and there's an understanding of why maybe like the younger son needs extra attention because of X. As long as like there's open communication about it, that doesn't cause like some of these issues between siblings that Alex will get into.

38:50Okay, that makes a lot of sense. And I think too, I remember playing volleyball. Like sometimes our coach would be so encouraging of like this one player who wasn't the best player and he'd be really hard on the best player. but it was because he would, you know, a coach's job is to understand that people, how are you going to, it's the same thing in the flock factory that you talk about a lot. Like how do you motivate people and what are their styles that motivates them? And sometimes you can give tough love to one and they'll rise to the occasion, but tough love will make the other one crack.

39:22So I do under, I really understand this preferential treatment. So how is the non favorite child impacted? Worst outcomes for the non favorite child, or I think this is the non, preferential child in this case right more mental health concerns more behavior problems more problems in school worse self-regulation skills seems like a big one and more relationship problems how is the favorite child impacted also can lead to negative outcomes for the favorite child many struggle in adulthood due to feeling too much pressure makes a lot of sense burden of taking care of the parent as they age i would assume not understanding how to handle adversity would be on there your parents are always saving you yeah yeah probably when something they could just call mom or dad being extremely favored is associated with worse relationships with favorites i'm sure with parents oh sorry i wrote the wrong thing so be like while being somewhat favored can lead to good relationships with your parents being extremely favored actually leads to worse outcomes with your parents relationship wise i i saw that growing up that i can think of somebody in particular she was so favored and showered and all these things by her parents and then it fell apart and i wonder why i think it was pressure i think there was too much pressure on her yeah to be so perfect because she'd been given everything so it's this is actually very interesting to think about the way so what should you do as jules was saying have open communication about why one is getting treated differently.

41:02And it could be as simple as, they're struggling in reading, so we're gonna help them more. I think this makes a lot of sense to me. Important to keep it top of mind and to have really strong communication around. Obviously, you're not gonna be able to treat all your kids the same. And so vocalizing why people are being treated differently, I assume will have a lot of... has a lot of benefits. I think the other three are great tips too. I was going to say, I think that the best one is be careful not to label children. Oh, she's my smart one. He's the athletic one. We've talked about this before.

41:43I think, but even as they get older, I think that's probably something that's very important. Explaining to your kids that the idea of fair is not equal. So different bedtimes for different ages and it just is what it is. and then be careful of common patterns and work to correct them. Example, always sliding in, always siding with the youngest child in conflict. Holly, that's such a good one. Look at the common patterns. Yeah. This is just a tougher subject for me to latch on to because we're years away from it. And so to you and me, we're talking hypotheticals. And I'm not like today when they're so young and full of love and joy.

42:27oh I shared about my volleyball team and my friend that I'm thinking of yeah all all this makes sense but I don't really have much to say beyond it other than as as Tate and Rocky get older like this is going to be a dynamic that I want to be very mindful of yeah I think for for sure um do you want to get into some things in the comments sure okay so guys I love your podcast I'm so curious your hot take on these. When are you transitioning from mama, dada to mommy, daddy? Does this happen naturally or do we teach them? So it's funny because Tate naturally says mama, dada. But I think it's so cute when she says daddy.

43:11So I've started saying, where's your daddy? And she'll say, daddy? So while I think the transition could be natural, I'm trying to kind of like expedite it a little because I think it's adorable when she says daddy. I'm definitely going to go natural on this. you think they naturally will just do it no like you're you said you're kind of changing the words like i'm just gonna follow the flow i'll be back in a moment i'm just using the restroom please keep going with me okay so from what jules learned online it just happens naturally through mirroring yeah which is what you're doing right you're giving her more shots on net to to to see it yeah daddy are we gonna have vibe checks in the room no kidding when he gets back we're gonna do a vibe check yeah if you were on a weight loss journey or have been interested in trying glp ones you got to hear about our next sponsor you guys veracity ali egan veracity's founder and ceo and a certified hormonal health coach struggled with undiagnosed hashimoto's ali found functional medicine which treated her underlying root causes with veracity and their most popular product metabolism ignite you can get an all-natural way to slim down get energized and sharpen your focus metabolism ignite is the number one doctor recommended glp one booster and GLP one alternative metabolism ignite you guys it has sold out 10 times because that's how much people love it and it's a unique blend of lemon verbena and hibiscus extracts green coffee bean extract and magnesium so we can all learn from Allie and we can make the switch to veracity you guys can head to veracityhealth.co and use code 2 parents for up to 65 % off your order once again that's v-e-r-a-c-i-t-y health.co for up to 65 % off and make sure you use our promo code to parents so they know we sent you oh yeah what i miss we took a centering um breath we'd like one from you we need a deeper inhale hold it at the top blow it out all right let's roll i have a new um activity you guys can do instead of social media great duolingo i'm learning spanish right now and i really think you guys should too it's so interesting you say that because i would love you to pull up duolingo stock price Is it down?

45:30It has become a case study on companies that have been hammered due to AI concerns. So the idea that you can learn new languages through either ChatGPT or how easy it is just to create a competitive app. Oh. I will say I did Duolingo like a year or two ago. um italian like they've really made duolingo now like the coco melon of adulthood like you're getting points for things and things are um like flashing on the screen and it's like telling you what a good job that you do and there's like world cup integrations and stuff like that and in like it it attacks you or gets you in there i mean that is like what i was wrong oh well i would imagine the world cup made it go up yeah maybe duolingo is only down i mean it's down it's down 30 year to date and well that's not great no um you don't have to do duolingo but i was thinking that you guys probably like 65 in the past year i was thinking of a different company oh my goodness i would love to do duolingo so when i'm like scroll when i find myself scrolling on tick tock i'm like i gotta get off here but you need something else to like pull you away right like sometimes like reading or i don't know isn't enough to like get you off of the tick tock app duolingo like does it for me okay jules this is really good to know and now i can order a sandwich or a coffee with milk okay order a coffee with milk from me quiero wait hold on quiero cafe con leche por favor can i have a milk with coffee please yeah that's the first unit is learning how to order things at a cafe as it should be that's brilliant now i'm learning greetings buenos dias bienvenido i'm buenos noches that's good night right yeah i think you guys would love it we would love it and it would like be very applicable to our life and my one of my friends does duolingo every day and she was like oh are you back on it and she said you'll be caught up with tate in no time oh that's so cute bubber is duolingo bubber is fully bilingual they have a really good social media presence yeah the owl they're very good at commenting yeah yeah yeah it was chegg the company i was thinking of oh chegg like the textbook yeah that it's down like 99 98.6 well textbooks are a thing in the past so are okay the whiteboard thing you sent yes so interesting hold on did you have smart boards yes and and your understanding of a smart board in high school because i i was like a saw i was a junior when they got installed i had smart i had smart boards in grade school what's a smart board is it was it a white board that they could they would write on with the and it was they could erase it and it was a smart whiteboard correct it's like a a big board and it was it a uh touchscreen yeah not touch screen though but was it uh was it like backlit or was it a projector it was backlit and it was the it's an updated projector so far updated though like you pick a you pick a red marker it's not actually a marker and you go and you would write on it and then you would just do like the erase and they would erase it it was un unwell i would love one and then you'd be up there and like you're writing and it gets uncalibrated so then there was like this whole process to recalibrate the board and that was like when you were a kid and you got to recalibrate the board it was awesome there'd be like probably nine dots across and you had to go hit the individual dots and recalibrate never done this never seen it you've never seen a smart board nope i remember that we went from a projector yes where they would oh my gosh where you'd add the clear piece of paper that you read on yes those were awesome they were awesome and then they came out with the smart boards yeah now what they're saying PTSD about like learning math on those oh I used to just always want one and I would want to draw on it myself like all the satisfaction but now they're saying individual kids basically what from what I understood is like they have individual iPads yeah iPads are Chromebooks and they're what's It's a Chromebook though, like an iPad.

49:56Yeah, it's, no, it's a, I had Chromebooks in high school too, but it's like a dumb laptop basically. You can only use the Google suite on it. At least 10 years ago when I had one. Okay. You could go on like Google docs, Google, Excel, you know, whatever, Google sheets, so on and so forth, but that's all you could do. I hate it. I love it, but like the whole group learning was so incredible. Smart boards were fun. So fun. You play like games on them. I think one thing that would be the best thing we could possibly do is look up how much a smart board is and get one in our house. Oh, my God. Like, I would lose my mind if I had a smart board.

50:37Well, I would lose my mind. How much are they? $3 ,699. The first one that's coming out. Do you think that we could do a brand deal? Oh, maybe. They don't seem to have like smart boards. These look like large TVs. these don't look like a smart board they don't have smart does anybody know where we can get a smart board we'll have to look into it sound off in the comments i would die i wouldn't always do it myself yeah those were fun yeah very fun um all right h town also in the comments okay how do we feel about your kids calling other adults mr and mrs insert first name as a respect thing instead of you know miss collier i would be miss hannah we're doing this with our 21 month old but it feels like a mixed bag out there so i was saying how tate calls all of our neighbors even though some of them are 50 60 by their first names like we don't have any misses in our lives no but i think that just because developmentally she's she's not at a or hasn't been in a place where she's processing putting two words together.

51:54But I think that she's getting close, and I think at that point we'll switch from Kiki to Miss Kiki. Really? Yes, and then I think it is on then the next step will be her being able to process when Miss Kiki says, no, no, no, it's fine, Tate, you can call me Kiki. So I think there'll be a little cycle that we follow. Wow, so Kiki is a nickname that one of our neighbors has that Tate calls her Kiki. So Miss Kiki is what we're going to swap to. Wow. I have a question. What? Should we talk about this Callie video? We can. I made a video talking to Rocky telling him that there was a girl in Callie that's mean to me.

52:39Because my phone got blown up about that a lot. Well, we should be nice. People should be nice. buddy there's this girl and she doesn't like me we'll call her Callie for the sake of the story okay and how do I know she doesn't like me vibes I can just tell she gives me the cold shoulder okay and I've only seen her a handful of times and like the first two times I saw her I thought our conversations were lovely but now I really get the cold shoulder okay so she doesn't like me and And here's the thing. Obviously, not everybody's going to like you in life. That's the entry level of living. Okay.

53:17But the nuance of it is you're not going to always know why they don't like you. Okay. You can be a juicy peach and somebody's not going to like peaches. And I always say that's probably got more to do with their palate and less to do with the fact that you're a peach. Okay. Now, the second thing is just because somebody doesn't like you doesn't mean you need to not like them. Okay. So when I see Callie, for example, I'm going straight over and I'm saying hi every single time because that's my side of the street. And I have to keep that clean. Right. What I can control is how I treat Callie and what I say about Callie.

53:56Right. I can't control if Callie is going to say hi back to me, but I can control that I go over and I say hi to her. I get the cold shoulder, not my deal, right? Second thing is, I don't need to say anything bad about Callie. If somebody asks me, oh, do you know Callie or something about Callie? Yeah, I know Callie. All good. Because I'm all good with Callie. Callie's the one that doesn't like me. So here's the thing. If you're a peach and somebody doesn't like peaches, no need to spend any time figuring out why. I thought it was a I thought it was a very well done video because I don't think you were being a mean girl at all I wasn't I was being the opposite no I wanted to know who it was though but now don't you know from the video that I'm not going to tell you well here's my question honest is it one person or two people it's a hybrid of two okay that's what I thought sorry that's not what I thought I guessed one person Yeah, but it is influenced by and I can name them by name.

54:59Yeah. And then when you said the other person, I was like, okay. And you know what? And do you think either those people know it's about them or no? I don't care. I didn't make the video for them. Okay. So I made it for Rocky and other people that are going through the same thing of like, yeah, sometimes in life, like, yeah, this video has nothing to do with them, whether or not they saw it. Couldn't care less. Thank you for clarifying. What I do care about, though, is like saying out loud, like sometimes people, because I was thinking about it. I was like, I just wonder what her deal. It's not about her deal.

55:27It's actually like it doesn't matter why. And I don't know these people very well. Like actually at all. We have mutual friends and I see them socially. And just starting to get like a little bit of. And I have some ideas as to why. But like it doesn't matter. I've always been nice to them. So whatever else happened with them is not really my deal. Someone commented and said that you being nice to them over and over again was antagonizing them. And I don't agree with that. And I just wanted to see if you had a response to that. I have such a funny response to that, albeit different. Well, I replied back to one person.

56:04I was like, they're sometimes my favorite person to go be nice to in the room. Because I know, I know they're just like, this girl. And it's just like, how are you? How's it going? Tell me about X, Y. And I just know they're like, I hate her. So you are antagonizing them. I don't care. I love it. I know I love it. Okay. Like, if being nice is my problem, I'll die on that hill. I didn't. I have a funny one where I didn't realize someone didn't like me. Okay. And I wasn't reading their texts negatively. And I was replying back being very nice. And then the text got kind of aggressive from their end.

56:50Oh. And I was kind of confused. and then but I was still like being really nice and then I showed them to a friend and he was like he thought you were antagonizing him I was trying to be nice I didn't realize that that his that this person's messages were I didn't realize there was a problem I did not realize there was a problem I just think that was a big miss on my part was this recent? the the the learning was yes with the learning was yesterday alex cost was telling me all about it that's so funny yeah yeah i just think i applaud you for how you're handling that those the situation with with them well i don't even need to play yeah i just you know what are you gonna do and for educating and staying confident and not letting it affect you not being mean back well you definitely can't be mean back and I went to a dinner last night and they were like who is it and I was like no one's gonna know no one's getting a name out of me it's for me to know the only clarifying comment is is it is not Callie well her name is not Callie but our neighbor messaged to me because we have a neighbor named Callie we have two neighbors named Callie both messaged me she was like this Callie loves you I was like well her name is obviously not actually Callie Oakland messaged me yeah no I know that I know that well I didn't know she messaged you but I'm glad that that was clarified yeah very funny very very funny and then my friend from high school Callie was like I love you I was like I know that's very funny the girl's name is just very clearly not Callie and it's a combination of two people yeah I just can't believe to have used the word Callie and then there's two Callies on the block is pretty funny might have even been where I got it I was going to do Casey but we had dinner with a Casey on Sunday night so I couldn't do that So I swapped it.

58:50If I use your name, it's definitely not that. Yeah. Yeah, but. I just can't. No, I was going to say something, but I'm not going to say it. You know, and that's how I feel about that. Yeah, we're going to just be nice. I don't mean to antagonize them, but I do love a nice run in. That's your southern part of Oklahoma showing that. What? Just the being overly nice to someone. Well, at some point you have to laugh. Yeah. Sometimes I'll get in my car and I will just die laughing. Yeah. And I'll just think, okay. All right. Three things everyone is Googling, but nobody has solved. Yep. Are you ready?

59:28Let's hear it. What's for dinner tonight? 500 ,000 to a million plus monthly U.S. searches across variations. And every recipe site, meal kit, service, et cetera, has not solved it. Of like, and this would be a very good AI thing you could do. take a photo of your fridge post it on chat and say what can I make for dinner and it could say you could make a taco bowl yeah I mean this I'm I'm very surprised that that there isn't a mass market offering for this especially in in the world of AI tech developments because feels like a need for a pain point for all of us yeah like here's what's in your fridge I'm surprised that hasn't been developed and every American household asked this question every single day with zero real solutions yeah and we used to do a meal in college where I had a friend who could it what did she call I think she called it a clean your fridge out meal she could go in and pull out different ingredients and make something out of it I can't do that I don't have that brain like I know what I'm having for lunch and it's it's um it's a siete tortilla and I'm gonna smash turkey on it and then I'm gonna put my dairy-free cheese and I'm gonna do it both sides I'm gonna eat it with salsa and like I have had that now five days in a row.

1:00:39You having the dairy-free cheese back in the mix is pretty funny. I'm having fun. I had nachos for dinner. Oh yeah. I'm enjoying the dairy-free cheese. It's been very exciting. Since coming back from maternity leave, I feel like I've been on my computer more than ever. And I absolutely love writing my weekly newsletters, but all that extra screen time has definitely started to take a toll on my eyes. And that's why I've been loving my blue light glasses from zinni optical zinni is an online eyewear shop prescription glasses sunglasses blue light lenses starting at just 30 you guys can go to zinni.com pick a frame upload your prescription and they ship it right to your door so there's no appointment there's no store there's no upsell at the counter and at that price you guys something kind of ships you're like why do i just need one pair of glasses why don't i get a pair that i can wear with this outfit why don't i get a pair that I can leave at my desk so I always have one.

1:01:31And you're not agonizing over one pair that you have to have for the next two years because you can get all the different ones because at under$30, you don't have to justify it. 1:02:05Go to zenni.com slash podcast and use code podcast15 for 15 % off your first order. The styles sell out quick, so don't sit on it, you guys. That's zenni.com slash podcast, promo code podcast15. Okay, number two, how to fold a fitted sheet. Yeah, people really struggle with this. estimated 100 to 200 ,000 plus monthly U.S. searches, millions of YouTube materials. Nobody has invented a sheet that doesn't require the origami toss over the hand. Do you know what I'm talking about? Probably not. No, but I am surprised that there isn't one of those, like, you know how they have the chopping devices?

1:02:42Yes. Like those, something like that hasn't been invented for the sheet. Like chop your onions for you type thing. Yeah. Or what if you just even had a zip component? It would make it easier to make the bed. But bless you, you can just unzip the corners. Oh. So then you can just fold it. I love that. Oh. Did I just come up with an idea? A little engineer. So all four corners, like it's like flaps? Yep, exactly. You can just zip it down? Zip them down. I love that because I think fitted sheets don't fit. That's correct. It's so hard to get them on. And it would be nice if they were like more snug to the mattress and they never...

1:03:20Came off, popped off. and you could fold that because it would have no scrunchy corners exactly we might have to make that might have to make a fitted sheet sound off in the comments if you would buy it we'll make it maybe we could do that in collaboration with somebody launch it with a retailer as an exclusive there we go we could do an exclusive launch um how to cancel a subscription estimated one million monthly u.s searches across all variations how to cancel netflix how to cancel my gym membership rocket money and true bill exist but only cancel a fraction of subscriptions and mostly just remind you to do it yourself.

1:03:53I went in the other day because we had the iPad on the airplane and we really needed to get something in front of Tate. So I did a one week free, but then it was going to be$74 a year. So I subscribed and I was like, hold on, I'm going to go unsubscribe to this in one second. So we played the game and when we landed, I went in and I had to Google, how do I, how do I cancel my free subscription? And it showed me where to go on my phone. I sat there and I canceled probably eight apps that I didn't know I was paying for. I did the same thing the other day. I couldn't believe it. I was like, what?

1:04:24I haven't used that in forever and it's$60 a year? Cancel. I mean, I just, I really got rid of them all. Unbelievable. Well, that's the thing is at least with Apple, the app cancellation is, they make that very easy because you can do it all in one place.

1:04:41It's when you subscribe direct when they can make canceling a nightmare. Yeah. And it's not on your phone. It's not through your Apple. So it's like on Netflix or something like that. it is just you know canva i got but i use canva um but things like that that you subscribe to let's just keep that phone turned over on this home stretch here darling um okay so i i've been talking to you a lot about this out loud but i think that there's room for trash improvement oh yeah i think the fact that we can have drones delivering packages and self-driving cars but we're still like wheeling out our trash like there's got to be a way for every street to have some sort of a trash chute that's like ran underground almost that you just we don't have i think that we're gonna do away with trash bags well the other thing is growing up our trash bin had a electric thing that compressed the trash that's fancy that's canada and i can't believe that we don't have those that in um that those like aren't aren't widely available because i i find that like the amount of trash like our trash bins get full but it's because like the the we're not we're not compressing we've got to be compressing the trash i think every house i don't want every house to have the same floor plan okay that's a bit utopian but i do want everyone to have dystopian what dystopian yeah dystopian i want every house to have like you you got two spots you can pick where your trash goes and they all just feed underground so we never have to take a trash bag out again you throw something away it just goes to a shoot almost like an apartment style they all go to the same place and then we don't have trash cans out we don't have trash spilling over like it just seems like good for everybody but it seems very hard to do i don't know when we're going to dig that underground tunnel Do you know what I mean?

1:06:33I think the ship has sailed on that infrastructure. Then there's got to be another way to do it. It's got to be. These trash cans are a disaster. The other thing, since Harrison's not into my trash cans, is a travel car seat, which we've been talking a lot about with the neighbors. There's got to be a better way. Yeah. These travel car seats are... It's so much slepping.

1:06:57I might as well just talk to myself. I feel like we're doing a lot of lists. And I just kind of want to talk, see what's going on. Because you're not talking. I like your shirt. It's a good shirt. Good shirt. Says Alex, just in case we forget your name. I think that's good. It was a gift from the brand. It's good in the mirror. I love the shirt. I mean, you know who would love shirts with their name on them? Tate. Tate. Ooh, Tate, Tate. Yep. What's on your mind? Take it over the finish line. Oh, I'd love to. Okay. oh i just went back okay well looks like we covered everything no we didn't okay so yesterday my friend texted me a link and it was from hinge and it sent me up some prompts to answer about her and then like i can sign my name and my relationship to her and i was like how does this show up on your profile and like do you have to approve it because she sent me something that you can count on zoe for i said being late and i was like oh that's funny jules is that automatically going on her profile but it sends you like it sends her the notification of what i said okay it gave me the option of putting friend or putting bestie i put bestie yeah and now she's gonna i don't think she's gonna add this one to her profile but what do you think about bringing friends into dating profiles i jules this is a phenomenal topic thank you i think that this is a must because sometimes the way you see yourself isn't exactly how others see you so it's nice to have a little bit of like what you think and what your best friends think love it totally and it just opens up another avenue of of conversation like you don't like i'm sitting the being late's funny or like what's their favorite food you know yeah the the questions were like a little serious i'm like i'm not answering any of this can you tell us something i can't i gotta reopen the link but okay we had a couple other things to talk about while you're pulling those up also it's really cute that she chose you she can well she's under the group chat ah you can send it to anyone and then you just like approve the ones that you like I guess what are they probably doing I guess these aren't heavy what are they probably doing right now a small thing they do for people something you can count on them for a thing they're quietly really good at they're still really positive I don't have that vibe with my friends well I I've told you guys before like if i didn't like you i would be much nicer to you guys or anyone if i don't like right right right right i will be nicer to you right if i do like you i like to have you'll get some tough love chat no not no no that's what i mean that's what i think your feet smell like horrific Harrison okay oh my god the whiff I just got

1:09:59can I keep that in yes absolutely everyone can keep anything in from today's episode that she wants oh my god okay we're gonna talk about plane rules because the seat, the plane seat debate has officially ended. We were flying United, and when, before we took off, the pilot got on. And he made NASA to the plane, and he took control of his plane. He did. And what he said is he said, hey, this is going to be a smooth flight, and here's why it's going to be a smooth flight. Number one, if you are sitting by the window, So you control whether the window goes up or whether the window goes down. Number two, if you are in a middle seat, you get both armrests.

1:10:50And number three, which I didn't really get, if you are in the aisle seat, you get priority to the bathroom. But you need to get up whenever anyone asks. I guess if two people go to the bathroom at the same time, he's saying you get to go first. No, he's not. He's just saying, of course, you get to get up and down freely with not having to ask anybody. Okay, well, I thought the first two points ended long-term plane debates. I'm glad we got those out of the way. And he also clarified, if you mess around on the airplane, just remember you will go viral. And it's not a good idea. And no one wants that to be that person on the airplane.

1:11:30He said there's this app called TikTok and they will dox you. Do you think anyone's ever recorded anything on a plane that hasn't gone viral? Like all of the, like. All of those situations go viral. It's very true they do. As they should. The other ones that go viral, I saw one yesterday, and it's an Austin Uber driver. And he's just like, I dropped off this guy. I love that guy. Going on their fourth date at Red Ash. And you haven't put out yet. And you're not that cute, according to what he said. But he's taking you now on four nice dates, and he's paid. And I hope this gets to you. And I just thought, wow, this guy.

1:12:07I love that guy. I have a question. I didn't see the video, so I can't really respond to that. But I had an airplane ordeal that I was very frustrated with. We were boarding the flight. I don't know if you saw this was going on. And I went and I got an energy drink from the little stand beside the loading station. A to-go. a two energy drink just for the plane and she charged me the wrong amount okay she ended up charging me two cents but i tapped paid and went away but i paid i hit enter and i hit go i had the charge coming at two cents we're then boarding the plane they come and get me and say, hey, they said you need to come back and pay the right amount.

1:13:05This is probably three minutes later. And meanwhile, we're trying to get two dunas, four suitcases on this plane, two kids. I had to leave the boarding and she said it and walked away. So I couldn't even give her back the drink. So I had to leave, run back to the place and give them the energy drink. and just be like, because there was a line, I was like, I don't have time to pay and just give it to them and leave. And then they refunded the two cents. Sounds like someone that cares too much about your job. But I think if you pay, like me paying. I think if you pay the wrong amount, we got to wash it, especially.

1:13:44It's a wash. You can go, and I think you can go over and see, maybe they're sitting there and they have an hour till their flight. But I think if you see, oh no, they're in the middle of like a chaotic boarding moment. like we were next in line just like schlepping all this stuff on and i was like right now he has to go pay yeah again because he already paid it was very frustrating yeah if i was the worker i would have just let it go comped it or like or give me the opportunity in line to give you the drink pack right oh yeah like that was my issue my core issue was if she came up as like hey i charge you two cents and like that isn't okay and and so i need to take the you either need i either need to take the drink or you need to come back and pay i would have said no problem please take the drink but but the problem is i had to go back i had to leave the line and leave the family yeah yeah so but maybe they take the payment out of like their paycheck if there's a missing if they yeah that's what i'm saying i'm not i'm not mad for her to come right and rectify but like don't like let me then give you back the thing right because it because it wasn't your fault like you you had two minutes and you you had used the two minutes prior to boarding yeah it was like self-checkout and it was actually your fault i totally see them and i paid i like the transaction went through yeah yeah the card didn't decline yes if the card declined i would have felt differently very interesting darling okay your most unhinged mom hacks so i have a question okay because as you can tell like me reading through these things Alex can you move your mic closer to your dilemma audience I really want to shave my beard and I haven't shaved my beard because Alex likes it well no what do I say every time you ask me I mean you've been telling me to keep it I say I like that beard but the moment you shave it I'm going to like that you're shaving I'm really ready to have it shaved then shave it I fully support that Fully support it.

1:15:44Well, let me ask you this. What do you think about me getting a little haircut today? Honestly, my ends look really good. I'm going to do like a one-incher. Very nice. You won't even notice. Do you have a picture without a beard? You've seen it without a beard? I don't think I have. Totally. Oh, once. Once. One time. I just want to do a trim. He doesn't mean a full beard. He means shave it down. Oh. You do that. I mean, he doesn't. It's just not comfy. Well, I'm sure it starts to itch. When it gets to this length. What do you think about Justin Bieber, the halftime show? I didn't see it. It's worth watching.

1:16:24Was it good? Okay, I did watch. Okay, okay, okay. So the Europeans planned the halftime show. I feel like we're dated on this. Well, no, this is interesting news. And I saw a really funny video being like, the Europeans planning the American halftime show. Okay, we got to start with Ted Lasso. of course obviously because he's a big american guy and the americans love ted lasso then we're gonna put justin bieber and huge american people love him but we're gonna pretend like justin bieber has never sung at a concert and ted's gonna like give him an act of like you got it buddy even though justin bieber huge guy then we're gonna bring out who was it the muppets oh i don't know they brought out like the muppets to do like sevens nations army big america thing yay that'll be awesome and then it was to watch to listen to this girl reenact how the europeans thought through this halftime show made a lot more sense because apparently just like made no sense they made it for the american gaze g-a-z-e correct but they don't understand the american gaze they didn't have the pulse on it so apparently it was like really funny i don't know all i know is i watched the beebs part and he's just a phenomenally talented person g-a-z-e gaze like through your gaze.

1:17:36I never heard it used like that. Through the male gaze. Through the male gaze? Yeah, I thought you, yeah. You thought she meant G-A-Y-S? Well, I'm glad you clarified. Well, it's difficult because you didn't see the show, so you actually would have no idea either way what she meant. She meant the American gaze. Yeah. One of those words, though, sounds the exact Okay, this has been, if you're listening, thinking, what an interesting episode. Vibes are high, but vibes are tired for Harrison. And they're a bit fidgety, I would say. Okay, well, we love you guys. Thank you for listening. Thank you for listening.

1:18:18Okay, Harrison's out. We'll see you on Friday with a lot more energy. Yeah, he's going to get 10 hours of sleep before Friday's episode. He's on his phone again. Welcome back to another episode of Two Parents & A Podcast — happy HUMP DAY (lol). Harrison is BACK from Minnesota and we get a little behind the scenes look on what it's like to drop an exclusive collab with Target (everyone go try the Flock Turkey Bacon Strips!!) before we get into our topics for the day.

Here are the big ones: the favorite child (apparently most parents have one) — we talk about what we learned about how this impacts BOTH the favorite AND the non-favorite sibling. Big communication episode too: 1) we talk about adult conversationalists — askers vs. sharers (we're big on both, but apparently either can be considered rude if you go too far), and 2) toddler communication — Tate is starting to be able to answer questions (but from what we've learned, she's just matching our vibes and not understanding quite yet!). Finally, while Harrison was gone, Alex wrote a FREE Substack about division of household labor (the tip: do this exercise with your partner!! the BTS: was this an overshare??).

And of course there's a bunch of other fun stuff: audiobooks vs. reading for the millionth time, Jules is learning Spanish, schools have gotten rid of smart boards, when your kid transitions from "dada" to "daddy", the first name vs. Miss/Mrs. debate, Hinge's new friend prompts feature, & the most important question: should Harrison shave his beard?! (Lol)

Alright, be back Friday!!!! LOVE YOU GUYS!
