In short
This episode of “Two Parents in a Podcast” is a casual family update plus parenting and culture commentary. The hosts talk about toddler independence (Bubber saying “no,” navigating a jungle gym, walking off on her own, and elevator button-pushing), and a baby sleep win: “Rocketman” finally sleeps through the night after bedtime bottle adjustments (they argue he needs a full larger bottle to stay asleep). They also bicker about practical stuff (chargers, elevator button design) and share “tweet of the week” advice: stop delaying joy. A major segment debates “social media is the new smoking,” referencing lawsuits by states (California, Colorado, Kentucky, New Jersey) against Meta for up to $1.4T, claiming addictive design harms mental health; they discuss infinite scroll/autoplay and beauty filters as targets. Notable examples include missing “gimmies” in a golf tournament and the “dating an idea before marrying it” entrepreneurship analogy.

0:34crew, well, a community cycling group. The thing about Facebook, you might find more than what you're looking for. From a browse to a bike ride this summer, find more on Facebook. Okay. Ready? How's my hair? It's good. I went to the bathroom and I wet it. I could tell. Is it too flat? No, it's, it's, um, it can't be any higher unless you spiked it. I'm just you this i'm gonna call jules oh my gosh we have to call jules let me guess your phone's dead i'll call her number of spam calls today one two three four not bad jules hi we're live we're discussing my hair jules if it's too flat or not it's not too flat jules because it can't possibly be less flat.
1:26I didn't bring a hat to, uh, I didn't bring a hat to Vancouver. And I got feedback from, from a family member, not going to say who that like the sides of my new haircut don't smooth nicely. So I need to go back in. You do. Um, I'm not the family member that who, how bad is it? It's, it's just a little choppy. Now here's the thing. I'm not the family member that gave you this feedback. However, you did something where you had to submit a family member's name. I can't remember what it was. And I was like, did you submit mine? And then I was like, oh, but I'm not a family member. And you were like, yeah, you are.
2:06But do you think family member is more so like blood? Because I'm not your blood. Isn't that crazy? I think when I say family member, it is non-spouse, both blood and non-blood. But I like - So your brother, so Dave, your brother-in-law, married to your blood sister. He's your family member. Yes. Okay. Okay. And then same thing on your side. Yeah. Interesting. Yeah. So anybody that's married. That's just like instinctively what comes to mind. But weirdly, with the carve out of like, I don't feel like I'm your family member. I feel like I'm your husband. Which is a family member, I guess. Yeah.
2:50Who's may or may not be wearing a ring right now. Are you not? Okay. All right, ready? Well, I took it off during my golf tournament yesterday, put it back on, and then took it off from my workout today, and it is not my shorts. Not your best golf match. What do you mean? I don't know. The text messages, if I read the text messages aloud, it would be like, just hit the ball. What did you do? Shank one? It. You played great the first seven holes. I was lights out. So good. I was lights out. I started. Uh, so the first hole and the first hole was dedicated to my late end. Oh. And, uh, we started on the 12th hole, which is a par three.
3:35I knock it eight feet from the hole. Two putt and par. What? Yep. Uh, I think I go par birdie. Sorry. I think I go par bogey, bogey par in the first four holes, which for me is like, par is them saying it's going to take you three shots and it takes you three shots yeah bogey is one over is one over birdies one under exactly oh my gosh good for me like so then the way it worked is you had three in your group and then one pro okay that's how that so you your dad and your aunt yeah and one pro and one pro okay and uh tied the pro on the first like i was tied with the pro three holes in and then lost it i kept it together for the first seven holes and then holes eight through 12 i blew up yon believe and then the general back nine i really struggled through and we were in second place they had a live leaderboard and um yeah i fell apart you took bad you took the team with you i took the team out yeah okay so you you have once said on this podcast no gimmies do you wish you had gimmies in this moment i was in a tough predicament okay i was in a tough predicament so the before the tournament started they call all the pros and they gave the pros all the rules and they put tape on the pro stick.
5:11Okay. Uh, I think the tape was either 12 inches or 18 inches on the putter. And they said to the pro anything within, uh, anything between the hole and this line of tape. Oh, if you lay it down like a pool stick. Yes. Okay. Sorry. I didn't tell that Claire. So before the tournament started, they put tape around, uh, like 18 inches up the pros putter. So he could lay it down. So he could lay it down and anything within that was a gimme. So there was, there was defined gimme's in the tournament, but I myself, not a gimme guy. After my last conversation, I couldn't even take the gimme's. So I didn't take, I didn't take the gimme's.
5:54Oh, that, that, okay. Now here's where I don't agree with that. That hurts your team. It cost me one stroke. Okay. That's fine. I'm fine with that. There was one gimme that I missed. One stroke to keep your character intact is fine with me. It's worth it. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Let's welcome people to this here podcast. Okay. Welcome back to another episode of Two Parents in a Podcast. I know that Harrison's going to put his phone down, right? Well, you're lucky it's going to die, so. Well, why are you not charging it at night? Because you took my charger. No, no, I didn't actually. Here's a good bicker of the week.
6:31I brought a cube. Harrison brought a cord. Who gets the charger? It's like marital property. What's mine is yours and yours is mine. I put the cord on my laptop and charge it via my laptop. That's a ridiculous thing to do. I brought the, I brought the, the stick. I brought the, what's it called? The plug. No, I'm happy to share it with you. I didn't, you asked why I haven't been charging it because I've been giving it to you, But wait, no, no, no, no. I've been charging my phone on the port while we're here. Like the thing where you put it on the. So you just, that's not true because I plugged it in when we got to my parents' house and it vanished.
7:09Because it charges my pump. Okay. So that's why I moved it. But every night I charge my phone on this like dock thing that's been beside the bed, which is amazing. I just assumed that you were using it for your phone. Nope. We're still in Vancouver, but we're recording this on Tuesday. So the night before it comes out tomorrow, we're flying back. We're very excited to get back to Austin. But I would say we love summers in Vancouver. Like I cannot explain to you how much fun we're having. And I think the real winner in all this is Bubber Tate. Like she, the amount of stuff there's to do for kids here in Vancouver is like limitless.
7:49So we just came from science world where Bubber like just so much to play with. Every night she gets to go on this walk along like the ocean and she sees the mountains. And like there is nonstop stuff for Tate to do here because it's not so hot here. We're not. We would not. This is not a weather podcast, so we're not going to do that. But my point is she's having a really, really nice time. Yeah, it's it's a really, really kid friendly city. we took her on the water taxi this morning as well yeah got off at david lamb park i think we should have got off granville island that was my mistake so she was going to a park i mean there's endless parks here yeah so um rocket man slept eight hours that's our big update here and the real key to that so the first night we were here i was like oh no we're gonna be in trouble because he woke up every three hours second night he started doing longer stretches so he was giving us.
8:44He would go into bed around 10 and then he would wake up at 445 for a bottle. He would chug the bottle. He goes back to bed. Last night, I woke up at five and checked my phone because I'm always like, what time is it? When's he going to wake up? Checked my phone. I was like, are you kidding me? My boy has not woken up yet. He woke up at seven. He went to bed at 11 and he woke up at seven. He gave us a full night's sleep. And I think that was because we just chugged him full of milk before he went to bed yeah but that is what and it obviously may sound very obvious but it is what we've learned is like give the boy the milk we really got to commit to the bottle before bed we cannot because he'll fall asleep after three ounces and it's like no he needs six because if we give him the three ounces he's up at two of course and he's hungry again but if we give him the six and we make him have the six he sleeps so much better have the six and he has the six no i mean we're putting the bottle in the boy's mouth and he's loving it and he's then he's sleeping it's not mean no but like it's not like no he's just he falls asleep because he's not night but it's like hey rocky do you want a little more milk and he takes it happily you guys know we love doing things differently so when it comes to teaching our kids about money i already know we're not doing it the traditional way and that's exactly why i love what cash app is doing teaching kids about money shouldn't mean paying monthly fees or switching banks every few years.

I don't know why we're so tired. I'm not tired. Well, you guys, I'll say this. Tomorrow morning, we have to wake up at 4 30 we've been doing berries while we're here and that's been great i have not ran so what i've noticed about my body four months postpartum with tate i went to berries and i was like okay i can run four months four months postpartum with rocky i was like i'll try to run i haven't done any cardio yet felt great i felt like i've like my sitting released in my body what are the odds i can have you start doing studio three with me and back in austin is there rowing involved no They cut the rowing.
12:25Okay, so what is it? It's the same as berries, just tread in and weights. Oh, then it's very high. I'll do it once or twice a week. What are you looking forward to most about going home? Routine. I'm excited to see my friends. I'm really due for some friend time. It's the routine. Okay. I mean, I'm excited to see my friends as well. I'm setting up a golf time for the weekend. What day are you golfing? Figuring it out now, but the initial thought process is Saturday morning before we go out on the boat. Love it. Love it. And is there an Ireland trip in the works or Scotland? Ireland trip has been, I would say, confirmed over text, not booked.
13:13Okay. The boys are going golfing. Yeah. So we have our confirmed interest there. And now, so it's a guys group going golfing. and the question here is if the girls the guys are gonna book it okay and i love these girls um and so harrison was like you guys can do your own thing and then we can all meet up afterwards i'm gonna take you up on it i'm gonna text them and say who wants to go to paris i'm trying to go to paris the decision was made that coordinating all the couples like the guys wanted to go on this trip yep all right we've been talking about it for a really long time and we found a time that works for all the guys schedules facts okay i know it works for you for you and my schedules they know it works for their relationship schedule but what we haven't unlocked is if it works for your schedule to actually travel so we said the guys are gonna are gonna book it and it's exciting If it works for the girls to book their own trip, great.
14:17But I guess, long story short, our trip can't be dependent on you guys also being able to go to London over that period. I agree. I'm just saying don't get FOMO when we start booking. Don't you get FOMO when I get happy fingers over there and I'm like, this is what we're doing. We'll meet up after. It'll be so fun. Yeah. I definitely like have the Europe itch that I'm excited to scratch next year. You know? do you know what I'm saying? Yeah. Or just confirming timing. Um, okay. Let's, okay. Let me just get on the docket here. Cause I, I know. Okay. So what else, what's going on with Bubber? Bubber's having a, just an all time cute trip.
14:59I would say she's really stringing together more than three words now, which is really fun. She's doing about five words and she just like, she got to swim in the ocean yesterday. Um, her cousin taught her how you, okay, here, here's what Bubber's up to. She went to Hawaii and Miami when she couldn't walk. So, and we would set her in the sand. But for the first time ever yesterday, she walked in the sand. She took one step on the sand. Her eyes got really wide and she looked down and she could not believe you could walk on something like this. It was like she was walking on the moon. Like, it was so foreign to her.
15:35So I was like, Bubba, you can keep walking. And Bubba's adventurous, so she liked it. But she's also clean, so she didn't like the fact that it was sticking to her. Here is, I was sad to have missed that sand experience. He was golfing. I was golfing. But something else came to mind to me on what's going on with her. What? Because I think there's been a very notable change. Let me see if I can get it. Give me a hint. Her focus on? Rocky? No. Other people? No. Bubba is acting very...
16:19What did she do today when we got to the park? Oh, independent. Yep. Yep, she's really exercising her right to do her own thing. And the big thing that jumps out to me, I mentioned that when we got off the water taxi, she was like, bye-bye, bye, and started walking to the park. And then when we followed her, she was like, no, no, no. no she like wanted to go to the park show that she'd go to the park on her own was when we're at science world there was like a really advanced jungle gym wait did you wait i i gotta say this i watched her say no data because she wanted to walk by herself and then she walked in the bike lane and i saw you just start sprinting yeah she's like she doesn't know my comfort yeah um so when we're at science where there's like a very advanced jungle gym and she entered and it let me tell you i was very happy how she navigated through it but like i couldn't believe she went into went into that jungle gym i know it was ages two to five and bumper is not two yet but she's so close that i felt like she's like kind of two but i was it was i'm down to round up at the jungle gym it's harmless i'm good with that yeah i was just thinking like can i fit in the tubes.
17:34I could have. No, you couldn't have. There was a way I had a way in. If I didn't see the way in, I would have had to stop her. Yeah. Can I tell you how it got in? Yes. Up the tunnel. Oh, okay. Fair, fair. People don't know what we're talking about though. Okay. Yeah. So we're going to go. We're going to keep going. Okay. Unpress the button. I wrote this down. This is what we do just so you know. A little insight. Whenever we're Harrison Daniel put the phone up. What happened on there? What's changed? Oh my goodness Oh my goodness This is so funny I just got a Google notification Okay And it's the neighbors leaving our house Swimming Shut up and that's the best Thing ever It is them It's like a little carousel of them That is so funny Jules said people are getting annoyed at our phone stuff so put it up Okay Are they getting annoyed at me having the phone or Alex calling me out, Jules?
18:32Jules, but I'm team Alex calling you out. Thank you, Jules. That's all we needed. Jules, I thought that you were Switzerland, Jules. No, the people are team Jules. Jules is Switzerland. Come on now, Jules. I'm going to do some research into how Switzerland navigates things so I can start having some really good comebacks on that. Okay. Okay, so unpress the button. We get in the elevator and Bubber is in like an all-time elevator pushing era. And we always let her know like you could only push these buttons up here that aren't the call buttons. What?
19:03Well, the things you notice as a parent that you never noticed beforehand, the alarm button is perfect eyes distance to a toddler. Yeah. Like that button couldn't be placed in a worse spot. I know. So she goes right in and every time she goes, like goes right for the alarm button and you got to jump right in front of it and block it and deflect her up to the open door and open closed. But sorry, that was an interruption. I do just think too, for the alarm button, we could, A, we could put the alarm button on elevators up high a little bit more. We could cover it with something just because toddlers, they get very, I mean, we see in Elf, those buttons, they like, you just, you want to press them all.
19:43Yeah. But my other thing with elevators right now, why isn't there an undo button? It's a great, it's a great call. Today I get in the elevator, I press the G. I'm like, oh my gosh, we're going to P1. We're going to the parking level. And I'm like, how in 2026 are we traveling to space and we have electric cars? Like I can't unpress that button in the elevator. And all you need to do is do a three second hold on it. And what doesn't work? Like where I'm, what I don't like about elevators. I love the classic button pushing these new ones where you go in and you type, like I'm going to floor eight and it's like, do elevator C.
20:13I'm like, I didn't see the C. I forgot. I already forgot. I'm so out on the new age elevators. Like the buttons are fine. Did you describe the new age elevators well enough? so everyone's very clear about what you're talking about. Okay, you go up to an electric, like an iPad looking thing. Yeah. And it says, where are you going? And you say, I'm going to floor 18. So you have to type in a one and then eight. And then it says, take elevator B. And then you have to look and then you have to go to elevator B, which has floor 18 written on it. But it's also - In the top right, really small. But it's also stopping at floors four, nine and 18.
20:43So you got to get on there. There's no chance. If you get on 18, you're like, oh my gosh, I meant to go to 17. You're stuck. Yeah. You're stuck. You got to go to 18 and go back down. And there's no buttons in the inside of the elevator. No buttons on the inside. I don't get those. And I find it, you know who I find it hardest for? I've had to help some people that are older. Yes. Figure out how to navigate that. So elevators in general, I think like it was cool. We made some steps. Give us the unbutton. Yeah. We like, we were like, okay, let's, let's like modernize the elevator. I hate what they did.
21:09And I want to just keep the buttons there, but I want to get like some undo buttons. I agree. And I just think it could be, I think entirely as a whole elevators could be better. I'm a bit sad about that. And I don't know, a bench. We could get a bench in there. A folding bench. So that way when it's crowded, you can fold it up. Yeah. And if somebody needs to sit, they can. New business idea. Elevators in the bench. All right. So. Can I do my tweet of the week now? Sure. Okay.
21:433 % battery. We can only hope it dies. Okay. Here's my tweet of the week. okay it's it's similar to my tweet of the week from the other week okay okay stop delaying joy until life looks a certain way you're allowed to be happy while you're while you're take it from the top from the top stop delaying joy until a life double no wow three take three jewels take three take three take three and you know what i'm gonna do i'm gonna enjoy this moment that's what you should do i'm sure enjoy this moment because the tweet told you this is the tweet of the week. Stop delaying joy until life looks a certain way.
22:20You're allowed to be happy while you're still figuring it out. There we go. I kind of messed that up again. While you're still figuring it out. There you go. I understand. I understand. Now, I like this because I do think a lot of people move the goalpost. I'm guilty of this too. We'll be happy when. No, we're happy now. We're happy now. How about that? And are there rooms for improvement in different facets it's a life. Absolutely. But that shouldn't take away from if this is a great moment, how could like, we're here, we have two beautiful children, we're surrounded by family. We're in a fantastic city.
22:58So I'll tell you this. It's hard to do that, though. Well, I think a lot of times whenever we read things like this, I go, I find that I default to self deprecating and be like, I move the goalpost a lot. But where I want to give myself some flowers is waking up with you, Bubber and Rocketman every day. Like I do find there is no goalpost moving with that. Maybe in terms of career there is, or, you know, a health journey or something like that. You can, you can move that goalpost. But when it comes to like waking up with you three and having a family, I do find that I'm like, this is happiness right now.
23:34My favorite family moment for sure with the four of us is when all four of us are in the bed. It was this morning. It was just a snuggle fest. Yeah. And Tate just, she's just been giving, hi, Rocky. Hi, Rocky. Because Bubba loves it. Oh, wait, no. She goes like this. Hello, Rocky. It's hello, Rocky. Hello, Rocket Man. Hello, Rocky. Uppies. Uppidos. Hello, Rocket Man. She calls him Rocket Man as well. Rocket Man or Rocky Boy. She does that. Rocky Boy. I have a buy one, get one 50 % off deal for you guys. We literally just talked about this on Monday that Harrison can sleep with all the lights on and it truly does not affect him.
24:14Meanwhile, I need complete. I need complete and total darkness to sleep like a full blackout situation, you guys. And that's where three day blinds comes in. Okay, so another thing that I was thinking of on this note, what? can i send a venma request to the neighbors for using our pool as a joke that'd be really funny how much are you gonna charge them um i'm gonna charge them h you cannot do it right now oh i wanted to do that no i'm gonna charge them whatever deep eddie charges deep eddie's a local pool it's a great local pool and i'm gonna five dollars okay wait why don't we have a sign i like when I like when it's not a round number.
26:29So should it be more expensive or less expensive in D-Patties? Slightly less expensive. Okay,$4.98. $4.98. Jules, confirm. Times four. Times four. Well, we could have a kid cost. No, but kids under two are free. Okay, so the kids are still free and you just charge the parents. Yeah. $4.98 times two. Yeah. but what's fun they'll complete your Venmo request well okay I'm I need a I need to so maybe we'll do 98 cents what I was gonna say I I I think it would be funny to get a menu made for pricing like an entry pool fee pricing I have an idea what as a joke obviously i'm gonna we have a house sitter at the house right now i'm going to email her a menu a pricing and have her print it off and so that way next time they go over they'll just see the pricing when they when they show up at the house but it needs to be like framed and like hung nicely not just taped like laminated all right neighborhood pool rates.
27:47Yeah, exactly. We need to put our address pool rates. We can have a happy hour rate. We can have a sunset rate by package monthly. You can do a year discount. Do you think anybody charges for their pool? Do you think there's anybody on the planet that charges for their pool? There's a business. Speaking of Twitter telling me about all these random businesses, there's a business. It's Airbnb for your pool. No way. Yeah. Jules, can we Google that? Because I'm a respectful man who doesn't go on their phone. Swimly. Swimly. I. Swimply. That's funny. Like simply, but swimply. Yeah. Do you like that or hate that?
28:30Love it. Love it on both sides. Win-win for the marketplace. Win-win for pool owners because obviously the cost, the maintenance costs of keeping a pool are very high from heating to cleaning. and win for families that don't have pools because it gives them access to it at affordable rates. Total win-win. Okay. I'm just wondering if there's kind of like etiquette. Like, did you bring your own towels or do you use their towels? Ratings are key and you got to bring your own towels. I do agree you have to bring your own towels. I ordered some towels the other day. The Cozy Earth towels we got, I actually love.
29:08They're very good. They're green. This is not an ad. The lime ones. They're green and white striped. They are so cozy. And so I need to get more because I want to put them around the pool. Yeah, we need a little storage bin. We got some housekeeping items to do whenever we get back. But what I was going to say, what I love in a friend. So I was talking to a friend about this earlier today. There's a couple things that I notice when it comes to friends and being attracted to friends. One is if a friend doesn't, if I meet a friend for the first, second, third time, or like it's just our first one-on-one time and they say they're gossiping about somebody else, that's a flag for me.
29:48I love when a friend is like ultra positive about people because that makes me confident how they're going to be when I'm not there. And I just think that's somebody that's, that's a person that feels good about themselves. Now, similarly. While being realistic. Yeah, you don't have to be like toxically positive. Yeah. But we don't need to be like, oh, she's ex. Oh, she's like, no. No. But like if you have a friend who's bald, you can't go around talking about how great their hair is. I totally agree. I totally agree. I think that, but I, I think that there's other things to talk about than people.

30:21Kills me not having Jules chuckle at my bad jokes. These jokes, they're coming out and then they're just falling on deaf ears, full silence. Apparently Alex doesn't think I'm funny. I've already said that I think you're funny. You don't think I'm funny. That was the joke. The other, okay. If you have to explain your jokes, they're not good. But the other thing that I'm sad about with you is I went shopping and you didn't ask what I got.
30:46And I told you like two or three times that I went with your mom. And then I got some things. And then I had the bag sitting there. And you never asked. And today your mom said, did you show Harrison? And I said, no, because he didn't ask what I got. What I'm digesting right now is, is this something that I should care about? I would hope. But. Like you didn't care at all what I got yesterday. No, I all, as long as you're happy, that's all I care about. But I like to share these things with you. So then if you, if you sharing it with me gives you joy, then I'd love it. But I don't want to share it with you.
31:29We don't care. But I care if you, I care. if the experience gives you joy no i want you to genuinely be like what did you get like if you came home i think like dead ass with the shopping bag i'm like show me everything i think you look great whether you're wearing the pr answer is a pr no no i'm not i'm not kidding though like i think you always look great that's what and and whether you're in the most casual of things or or dressed up. Like I don't have a preference for like, if we go on a date night and you're wearing sweatpants, great with me. If you're, we're going to date night and you're wearing a beautiful dress and heels great by me.
32:12And so like, because everything you, because I love everything that, that you buy. Um, I just like, it's like, you're going to look great. Yeah. I just wanted to show you what I got. Well, we're going to look when we get home. Yeah. That's the spirit. Yeah. Because I want to talk to you about it. Okay. Now, here's the other thing that I was talking to a friend about that I really love to do. Okay. The saying that we sent back and forth was, it was Olivia. And I can't remember what we were talking about. But basically, it was like, congrats on your failure. Most people don't even try. And having that energy for people.
32:54I love when someone tries something and it doesn't work. because I don't love that it didn't work for them, but I love that they tried it. Like that positive energy about people, like are we giving out enough compliments? Are we saying like, wow, good for her? Do you know what I'm saying? More? 100%. And my delay was because I was thinking about Travis Kalanick because he's on a big press tour right now. Okay. And I was, but more so what I was thinking about was, was how when I hear about an entrepreneur failing, like when I hear about a business failing, I'm always, my personal take today is always, of course, makes sense.
33:44They took a shot. Some businesses work, others don't. But what's really funny, that's my view now as an entrepreneur. I remember when I was a banker, how much judgment I had when businesses would fail. Like, how could that happen? So it really, like for me, where my perspective changed is like when I got in the game and I realized how close the line between success and failure can be and how many brilliant, smart entrepreneurs I've seen build massive businesses and how many brilliant, smart entrepreneurs I've seen where the current business they're working on fails. uh yes i what when that happens like all right make sense on to the next one but i think if we i think the energy we put out is the energy we receive so what i mean so to build off what you're saying is for us to say that is because we had i can't remember what we were talking about but somebody started something and then they were going to shut it down and i was like okay baller of her to even try totally and olivia was like yes it's like congrats on your failure queen like adequate like instead of being like oh i heard she had to shut it down it's like cool so cool she tried because so many people don't and it's that quote the other day that we read which was um an idiot in motion still goes faster than a genius standing still yeah and it's just and it's easy and bernie it's very bernie bernie brown but it's actually somebody else that said it but like it's easy to judge from the cheap seats can you pull jules just because i want to can can you pull Travis Kalanick's past businesses before Uber?
35:21Exactly. Please. Yeah. It's all these, it's, it's these overnight successes that aren't overnight successes. So he also had a phenomenal, uh, a phenomenal perspective that I saw today. Okay. Okay. I don't know if this is interesting or not, but it kind of goes to the guys on cheering on failure. And he said um he talked about the importance of dating an idea before you marry it love that love that i get it yeah okay and that made so much sense be like we all have all these ideas and when the idea first comes up it's always great but you really need to spend time and sit with the idea and have far more than one date with the idea before you marry it.
36:09And then ultimately when you know, you know, and you can, you can take the big bet on that. So I, I really like that, that. I would also, I think that's a great idea. I would also say though, to people, like if you're dating the idea and you can't stop thinking about it, don't be afraid of marriage. Exactly. Which I, I love. Like I just am. But also don't be afraid of dating an idea and realizing it was a bad idea or it's an idea that's not going to work. Yeah, don't be afraid to break up. Yeah. Do not be afraid to break up with the person because you think there's nobody else out there that you're going to be able to date.
36:41There's a lovely girl out there you're going to be able to date and maybe marry. Yeah. I think you should think about it that way. Because don't they say behind every, who said this, behind every overnight success was 10 years of preparing? It's the most common.
36:59it's it's one of the most yeah common experience shares that i see from successful entrepreneurs it's like i was talking to uh greg at bloom the other day about this because they launched their energy drink and it's taken off like wildfire and it's unbelievable the market share that they've gained in very short order so it's unbelievable how good that drink it tastes my favorite on the market but like what we all or i think what gets lost in the grand scheme of things is like it started 10 years ago yeah it started 10 years ago with with mari's bands and like workout bands right um but and a lot of people that's not what that's not what people are focused on that's not what they talk about and that allowed them oops to get here today totally that like the journey yeah but i go ahead and maybe doing over 500 million dollars a year in sales which is just insane that's insane and people might not know they started at workout bands right i think that started the yes but the energy yeah because it was then there was the greens powder and then there was the bloom pops and it's like all these different things but maybe people are just learning about bloom with the energy drink and they're like wow this just like blew up overnight and it's like no it didn't no it did not because anything good that's worth having is going to take hard work, but I'm very into right now.
38:20What I'm very into is I've decided, and I've always known this, but like really living it, like it's just easier. It's easier to, for people to be a hater. Like that's the lowest hanging fruit. How about like, instead of doing that, we just, we take the higher road. And I was really thinking about it when I was doing my Q &A on my Instagram the other day. And somebody was like, okay, I couldn't be a bridesmaid in my best friend's, I couldn't be in my maid of honor in my best friend's wedding because I was exclusively breastfeeding. She was upset. I was upset. And now she wants to hang out six months later.
38:54Do I hang out with her? And I was like, of course, hang out with your best friend. Like if we take that, if we take the high road here and we, we really think about this, if it's your best friend, you obviously love her. What the underlying thing here is you both want love. Okay. So you need, and you need support. She's getting married. Every bride wants to feel loved. You're exclusively breastfeeding. That's a really hard thing to do as a mom. Don't let this ruin your friendship. In fact, let this make your friendship stronger. Like just take leveling up and saying, okay, I'm just going to take the high road here.
39:24I think it's something that is an energy I'm taking into this school year. Although we don't have a child in school, but I do feel like everyone going back to school is like a time when I'm reframing. Love it. Do you agree? Yes. I felt a bit rambly there, but it's just something that I've been like loving doing. It's kind of a casual talking episode. I am so excited because I have 40 % off of Hungry Root for you guys. You've heard me talk about Hungry Root for a while now. And honestly, the reason that I keep coming back to it is because it just works. It's as simple as that, you guys. It works.
39:55It fits into our family because figuring out what to eat and feed the family every week is one of the most exhausting parts of parenting. And Hungry Root has completely taken that off my plate. But here's what really keeps me sticking around when it comes to hungry root, you guys, is it's getting more personalized the longer I use it. It learns my taste and dietary preferences, and it keeps refining what shows up in my box, which is actually how I discovered hands down my favorite snack right now, which is the good crisp company potato chips. You guys, they're potato crisps. Like I cannot explain to you the crunch that these things offer.
40:31My mouth is watering just thinking about them. I'm obsessed with them because whenever I'm breastfeeding, I crave salt. And with over a thousand grocery items, salad kits, smoothies, snacks, meals, the variety never gets old. I love that they also screen out over 200 additives like high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, and all their meat and seafood is high quality with no hormones or antibiotics. And that's a standard that doesn't slip, you guys, which as a parent means I don't have to overthink when it comes to feeding the family. Honestly, Hungry Root is one of those things where I didn't realize how much I rely on it until I have a week without it, okay?
41:08And we're traveling right now and I don't have it in my life. And that's when I'm really like, wow, I don't have to think when it comes to Hungry Root because they do the thinking for me. You guys are going to love Hungry Root as much as I do. For a limited time, get 40 % off your first order. Plus, get a free item in every box for life. Go to HungryRoot.com slash 2Parents and use code 2Parents. That's HungryRoot.com slash 2Parents code 2Parents to get 40 % off your first box and a free item of your choice for life. All right. Social media is the new smoking. Okay. Juicy headline, but let's dive into what this means.
41:46The states of California, Colorado, Kentucky, New Jersey are suing Meta for up to$1.4 trillion, claiming that they intentionally got young people hooked on Facebook and Instagram. Okay. Do you think this is true? So here's why I shared it. Okay. Because it really, you know, made me wake up and realize like the way the government is starting to go after the social media companies is very reflective of the way in which they went after the cigarette companies. And when you look at the claims, it's like the buzzwords being, you know, designed products to be overly addictive. and you know i feel like we're getting to a point where in 10 years we may be looking back at at these social media companies with the same negative perspective that we do a lot of the cigarette companies being like how were you causing this harm in people um how are you knowingly doing that and i feel like that message like it hasn't really landed and resonated with me and i feel while they're, so they're being sued for 1.6, 1.4 trillion.
43:02The judges come out and said that that number is egregious, but Facebook has already lost a lawsuit for 998 million, I believe, against 942 against Colorado. Was it New Mexico, New Mexico. So like big numbers are already being settled. And so do I think it's, do I think it's true? Absolutely. I think, I think they're causing harm. And I think that, um, they need to be accountable for mental health health. And I think they will figure it out. And I believe they'll, I believe social media, uh, at face value is amazing. I think that when you design it to be overly addictive, that's the problem. And so I hope they put the guardrails in place to make it, um, to, to make it or to find that right balance so that was really well said like i do hope like social media we're not sitting here saying social media is bad bad bad right yeah we are saying it has because i i get my news on social media i stay connected to my friends from high school on social media so i see there's pros to it but i agree this doom scrolling it's a false sense of dopamine it breeds comparison there's a lot that's bad to it but i need you to fill in this sentence for me yeah so if we know smoking causes cancer, right?
44:19Yeah. Social media causes what are you saying in your opinion? Is that depression, anxiety? Okay. And I really agree with that. And, and, and when you zero in on, on the suggestions being made, it is, it isn't in the platforms. It's, you know, end continual continuing and continuous playback, right? In, in the infinite scrolling and the end. Yes. Like create time breaks. Yeah. Don't focus on content that keeps people on the page. Focus on, you know, quality of content. So here's the things that they want to change. States want to want the court to kill the infinite scroll. Yeah. The autoplay. Yeah.
45:06Instagram stories and beauty filters nationwide. I can get behind all that. Exactly. Like we just we've over feel like we've overshot on on the addiction and and they need to be held accountable and so here's where it's the same playbook as big tobacco products are designed to hook you yeah the company knew i think that's the biggest thing the company knew what they were doing they marketed it to kids and they denied the harm publicly and they do need to be held accountable for that and and that's my big question is because like where where it gets super gray is the line between like them knowing is because on one end, you can look at the data and say, oh my God, people are spending four hours a day on our, on our, I'm sorry.
45:54You can look at the data and say, people are spending an hour a day on our app. They must love it. Right. And so you look at the, I can see how you can internalize that data and say like, oh my goodness, people are enjoying it so much. Like we created something that is bringing joy to people. And then, Hey, we put in an update. People are now spending an hour and 20 minutes a day. They now love the app even more. Right. And so I get how, like, I feel like when you start building people build with the best intention, the data was saying that people are liking it. Let's keep going. Pardon? Like the data was saying people are liking it.
46:29Let's keep going. Yes. And then they ultimately you reach a point where that line crosses and you realize this was addictive and we knew it yeah addictive because it well it's like it started here and we just kind of swung yeah totally like when mark zuckerberg was building facebook it wasn't to be addictive and let me rephrase it the big question for me is at what point does it go or did the company go from making an app that people enjoy and people love to making it as addictive as possible. And so like I think when I think about food or when I think about what happened in tobacco, like to my understanding, the tobacco situation is they learned nicotine was addictive, okay?
47:22And then they put more nicotine in products to keep people more addictive. Yes, okay. To make it more addictive, okay? Okay. So it's like in food, like we set out to make the best tasting products possible. Right. Right. Addiction has nothing to do with our process. Yes. And I think, you know, that's how all food sets out. Ideally. If a food brand then goes and says, you know what? Okay. We have a product that tastes nine out of 10. If we now add a bunch of unhealthy things and jack it up with, you know, refined sugars and sodium and the taste stays in nine, but we make people more unhealthy and, or we make the product more unhealthy and more addictive, the line is very clear.
48:11And so my question on the social media front is it seems very clear where it happened in tobacco. It seems very clear where it could happen in food and beverage. What I don't know about this industries, where does that happen? Where does it go from? We want to create this app where people share their lives and see what's going on in their friends' lives to we want to keep them on this as long as possible, despite what it means for their mental health. Yeah. When they incorporated stories and they said you can scroll from story to story to story and it will never end. It will be an endless loop.
48:49Did they know that was addictive or were they trying to connect us in a different way? I see your question. Yeah. And to me, that's like going to be the power of, um, how this all, uh, ultimately shakes out because I do believe these things were started with the best of intentions. And then does that, do they hit that inflection point where it goes from great intention to, you know, profits over everything? Absolutely. And making things addictive and knowing it was addictive. And I hope, what I hope is that they created this stuff under the context of make the app as enjoyable as possible. They overdid it and they'll fix it and write the write things.
49:31Totally. I get what you're saying. I was going to say that I don't know what year this was, but I think I was in college when Instagram switched from, I don't know if you guys remember, like from the chronological feed to some sort of algorithm based feed. And I think everyone was really upset because they weren't seeing things in the order that they were posted. But to me, that point, so some point when I was in college, so maybe 2016-ish, is when things shifted online to be less about sharing and more about some sort of algorithm. Yes, Jules, I remember that. And that's when you become like obsessed, X, Y, Z.
50:11But in their defense, right, like do they make that shift because they want to reward the best content being shared to people? Or do they make that because they know that that's going to keep people locked in the app for three to four hours a day? Right. Right. And that's the question. And at that point, though, like it wasn't about – before that, it wasn't about the best content being shared, though. It was about sharing your life and that was it. Yeah. Yeah, I get what you're saying. Okay, guys, back to school season is officially here. Even though we don't have a school-aged kid yet, I feel like the collective mom energy right now is on tin.
50:54Every mom I know is deep in it. They're getting everyone on new schedules. They're prepping lunches. They're buying supplies. I'm seeing them post like backpacks with cute balloon arrangements for the first day of school. They're signing all the kids up for sports. They're driving kids around. It's all the new schedule and the mental load in August. It is genuinely wild. And through all of it, we as parents always end up at the bottom of our own priority list. I see this time and time again with all my mom friends. So here's what I want to say. This is actually the perfect time of year to prioritize your mental health.
51:24Because if you're setting up new routines for everybody else anyways, why not build one in for you too? And that's exactly what RULA makes possible. Here's the deal with RULA. They partner with over 120 insurance plans, which means the average copay is just$15 per session. That's real therapy from licensed professionals at a price that actually works for a family budget. Because think about it, you already used insurance for your kids, pediatrician, and your own physical health. And mental health should absolutely be on that list too. And that's what I really appreciate about RULA is you're finding a therapist that's actually right for you.
52:02not the first person available not a random assignment someone who fits your specific needs and preferences plus appointments can be available as soon as tomorrow so there's no reason to put it off until end quote you know those things calm down because let's be honest they never actually do thousands of parents are already using Rula to get affordable high quality therapy that's actually covered by insurance and helping them and their families and so can you visit rula.com slash two parents to get started that's rula.com slash two parents um there's some gen z career panic because of ai and gen z is thinking ai is taking all of their jobs and so some of them are even pivoting their majors and i really understand this i do and i don't 69 fear ai will make it harder to find a job.
52:5522 % have already changed their major because of the job market. 47 % have given at least a fair amount, in quotes, of thought to switching majors because of AI. If you look at how companies largely hire, it's much more based off of problem-solving skills and broader skill sets than it is what the specialization of your degree is. And so I think that to be adjusting your career based off of a technology theme that we're really not sure how it's going to play out is probably a losing, is probably a move that will not get you ahead. because inherently you're just guessing at the future. But I think it's very good to keep the technological changes that are happening top of mind, so that way you can be adapting your general mindset and skills accordingly.
54:06Does that make sense? That's my take on this. Yeah, but like what's amazing? So who do you think is changing their major? I think like lawyers are a great example. I think like lawyers get blanketed as, oh my God, with AI, AI is just going to do all legal work. Okay. And I think that AI will drastically change the legal work done, but it will not remove all legal work. Listen, I think in terms of legal work. I think you'll probably see more law cases get filed. And so therefore you'll need to see more prosecutors as well as more defense attorneys. Yeah, I think there's a lot of like less inquiry saying, can you write me one letter because X, Y, Z happened?
54:50Like there's like my because my landlord did this. Like now you can just ask chat to write that letter. Yep. You know, so that's actually probably nice because that person was only going to be billed for 10 hours anyways. And so I bet lawyers are actually glad that busy work's done, you know, because chat chats able to take care of a lot of these things now. but it is funny because I bet like a, like a landlord, I think about a landlord tenant relationship that got into like a little legal tiff. And they're both saying my lawyer, you're saying X. my lawyer, you're saying, well, it's probably just chat talking to chat.
55:21Oh, I, I, I'm sure. Chat's probably in a lot of lawsuits with itself. Yes. Do you know what I mean? And then it's probably getting confused. You should probably give it that context. What? Like if you're in a, a small claim situation that you're handling with yourself and not, and not through a lawyer, and this is obviously not legal advice, is giving, and you think the other side is using chat, giving your chat that context of like, hey, I think the other side is using AI. And so then it will craft its response knowing that as a potential weakness. Oh, wow. That's a leg up right there. You're a good prompter, huh?
56:01Oh, as you say, A? A. Thank you. You're a good prompter, A. Yeah, point being is like, I think that, you know, changing your major because of AI fears, I would encourage people to double tap into that before just doing it because it's so unclear how this all shakes out. You would caution against that. Yeah. Okay, so we think lawyers, doctors, there's no need. If you want to change your career path or your major for other reasons, whether it's passion or – Well, of course. Then that's what I'm very encouraging. Well, and I also think graphic design. I do think little – I think AI can do a lot of logos.
56:45I do think that. But listen, doctors can't – I mean the – But if you're – Marketing in general. If you're a designer, what AI can do for you is very similar to what Adobe can do for you today. But it still can't do the creative part. It's going to be a tool that you use. So you're just going to get better at your job. Okay. That's a good devil's advocate right there. H-Town. That's what we're looking for. Like our designer has – I do so much design work on AI. But our designer has never been more busy. because of all the variations. And the brand work we're doing, we're doing more brand work today on Flock than we've done in the past three years.
57:31Interesting. That's behind the scenes. And that's because of AI. AI's helped that. AI's definitely helped that. In tandem with. It helps you go further and achieve more. Yeah. When used the right way. Yeah. Good. That's a really good use case for it. It's a positive one. Okay.
57:50All right. The last thing that we're going to do is in the comments. Turns out dog TV, it does exist. Somebody's already thought about this and that's because people love their dogs. Can we pull funding history on this company, Jules, please? It's an app with TV shows for dogs designed to reduce anxiety and enrich their lives with thousands of relaxing on-demand videos and calming music that dogs enjoy. And so Jules' first thought on this, which I think is very valid. The question is, can dogs get too much screen time? And the answer, yeah, they can. They sure can. Well, what's it called? Experts say, yes, dogs can have too much screen time.
58:24What's the app called? Oh, it's called Dog TV. Oh. DOG TV. Look at that. How about that? Jules, have you ran a case study with Ginny Bears?
58:37She's just a screen-free dog. You know what, Jules? Good for you. Jules, it's - We did the bluey the one day, and I'm already over it. You've noticed some behavioral changes since then? Yeah. Did we pull funding history on this company? I'm trying. It says Dog TV has primarily raised capital through strategic media partnerships, corporate investments, and angel investors. How much? I'm finding they've not publicly disclosed venture capital rounds. Okay, so some negative impacts of screen time for dogs. Overstimulation. An overstimulated dog seems like a bad recipe. Sleep disruption. That's sad.
59:18Confusion. and anxiety replaces real needs. And this is the sad one. Too much screen time for dogs, bonding loss. And they're saying screen, it's the same thing with kids. Screen time is fine for dogs, but it can't be in place of walks, playing and social time. The dog park, you can't replace it with the dog park. Same with humans. Should we call the neighbors and like, hey, what are you doing? What? No, why? Because we just got back in the pool. you're still thinking about that you love that they went and swam that's so cute um all right and we can wrap it up with this take it or leave it parenting advice cook with the cook and eat while they're eating that was you okay one of my take it or leave it segments yeah this is a fake Harrison's fake segment yeah an h-bomb it's it's it's pretty simple when I cook a meal with Tate, she's generally going to eat that meal versus when I'll just cook a meal and she's sitting there playing while I'm cooking, her likelihood of eating that is much lower.
1:00:29And there's kind of two parts to it. It's the same thing. If I eat the meal, the chance that she eats a two, 95%. If I cook her something and don't eat it, the chance she eats it, 50-50. So that's just been a big learning of mine is when I just kind of took a step back and looked at, hey, what times is Tate eating her full plate or what times is she not eating? The two commonalities on when she's eaten most of her plate is when she's doing the cooking prep with me, number one, or when we're eating the same thing together. Like if I sit down for steak and fries and I put steak and fries on her plate, chances are that she's going to eat her steak and fries.
1:01:12Because if I just put steak and fries down on a plate and I'm walking around on a work call, chances are she's not going to eat that. And the last thing is I think letting her pick. I think when we show her two options and she picks one and then we make it for the whole family, that's when we have the highest success rate of her eating. Totally. But last night, I don't know, three and a half pieces of pizza. She was so hungry. It was so cute. They had played so hard. Yeah. She was so hungry. It was adorable. All right, we got to wrap because we've got swim time with the cousins. So we love you guys.

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Wednesday!! As you watch this, we are likely on our way back from Vancouver, woo! You guys know we've always said we think travel unlocks milestones.. and WOW did we notice it on this trip. Tate is truly in her independent toddler era (BIG time on doing everything herself, it's so sweet 🥹) and our Rocket Man slept 8 HOURS through the night?! (YAY)
OK we started with a little update from Harrison's golf tournament: gimmes were allowed per the tournament rules, but he wants you all to know he did NOT take any. (This is Jules now… while we were recording, I was thinking about how funny it would be if he DID take a gimme and one of you caught it on camera.. like he truly can't take one for the rest of his life lol. I would have said this on the pod if I wasn't on the phone hehe)
I feel like we were getting a little philosophical this episode?? Here's the advice we're living by right now (had to share with the class). The Tweet of the Week says it best: you're allowed to be happy while you're still figuring it out.. stop delaying joy until life looks a certain way!! Plus our new motto that trying is COOL. And Harrison ties it together with the reminder that there's no such thing as overnight success: behind every one is ten years of preparing, so date an idea before you marry it! OK you guys can totally take or leave all of this, but we're taking all of it into the new school year (bc we feel like this is another New Year's Day??)
Then we get into the real topics: is social media the new smoking?! We talk about how social media is following the big tobacco playbook.. engineered to hook you, marketed to kids, and downplaying the harms while the evidence piles up. Then Gen Z is officially changing their majors because of AI: 22% have already switched, and Harrison shares why he thinks that might be the wrong move (skills over specialization!). And finally, a DOGTV follow-up you didn't know you needed: it's REAL, we pulled the funding history live, and we had to ask.. is it possible for dogs to have too much screentime?!
Ok, LOVE YOU GUYS, see you Friday!! :)
