In short

The hosts discuss creating content and building confidence (posting on social media, “fail out loud”), then pivot to family life: wedding/honeymoon planning, a pregnancy update, toddler sleep transition (dropping to one nap and waking at 4am), and school options. They also share an “AI school” overview (Alpha School) and debate homeschooling vs other models. They end with “Picker of the Week” (whether to bring a whole messy purse or dig for an item) and a bicker/relationship takeaway.

Guests

No guests appear in the transcript; it’s a two-host podcast (“Two Parents”). Named participants include Harrison, Jules, and “Nori” (Jules’ mom) referenced by name, plus “Tate” and “Bubz/Jellybean” as children.

Key claims

Content improves after ~10,000 tries; embarrassment is a cost creators accept. Alpha School uses only ~2 hours of traditional learning daily and emphasizes life skills; “guides” are student-reviewed and can be fired. Student happiness is claimed at 95% happy vs low satisfaction in traditional schools; test outputs claimed 2–6x traditional.

Notable examples

Jonas Brothers concert talk (Harrison attended; Jules missed due to pregnancy sickness). Louvre robbery discussion (Mona Lisa stolen for two years; debate about thieves’ motives). Alpha School life-skill examples: presenting news live (grades 2–3), and launching a food truck (grades 4–5) to teach inventory, financial literacy, and operations.

No pre-ramble. Preamble. What do we call the pre-tro? The pre-intro? Whoa. The pre-show. The pre-show. No pre-show. Today? We dove right into it. The best things in life are. Let's just start. A lot of people always ask me, you know, how do you get into content?

1:26Blah, blah, blah. And I thought Jules had a great line earlier, which was, do you know what it, well, what is it? What's more embarrassing? Than not posting. Yeah. When you have good content is not trying. Yes. And then Jules said, yeah, so that's the most embarrassing thing you can do is not try. Yeah. It's cool to try. Jules said trying is cool and I completely agree. I think we should put that on a shirt. Yes. Love it. But easier said than done until like the spotlight is on you. And I guess the context of it. So Jules needs to start making content. Just kidding. I think Jules was saying that to me, but I may need to say it back to her.

2:10No, because Jules doesn't like Harrison makes these really great TikToks and doesn't put them on his Instagram. And so we're talking about why don't you put them on Instagram? Because Nori, Jules' mom, can't see them because she's not on TikTok. and it's a whole problem. Our neighbor can't see them because she doesn't have a TikTok. People want to know what you're up to. You're isolating. I weirdly just feel so different about both platforms and one style of content just feels right for one and not for the other. I haven't updated my Instagram brain. So somebody texted me I'm not going to say who it was.

2:41I need to come up with an Instagram strategy. Like the TikTok strategy is very much like point, following what you do. You're like point, shoot, and go. And Instagram has always been like so planned. And so like because it's planned, nothing ever then goes up. So I need a strategy on what's going to go up there, why, and how. See, you're so different than me. Like I don't think twice about it. I just post, post, post, post, post. And sometimes it's sloppy. Sometimes it's not. And here you are. Like you're the total opposite, which is why we work. But I'm just like post it. but you you need a strategy and you need he needs um what are those things not goals but what's the word pillars no but he needs like kpis yes he needs kpis thank you yeah i i i'm a goal guy i like knowing what the target is and and moving towards it um somebody texted me and they were like hey they're starting a business and they said hey i my business coach recommends that i start making content but i think everybody i went to high school with is going to make fun of me and i wrote back and I said, if I had a dollar for every time I got this question and the, and the people that asked me this question are not people that you would think would ask me this question, but she wants to start making content around her business, like founder, um, content.

3:57And I said, so many people ask me this question and I always respond to them. One of three things and I'll read you the three things. But I said, it's so funny because so many people want to make content, but they're afraid. So I said, and that's a really good reason that you should start doing it because knowing so many people want to do it. But the first thing is people are going to make fun of you until it works like that's always I got made fun of at the beginning and then it starts to work and then as I always said those people that unfollowed me that I knew they had it was awkward they had to follow me back number two was they only don't the ones who make the most fun of you are the ones who wish they had the balls to do it themselves which I do believe is true and then number three I read this somewhere I can't remember who posted it but all content creators have one thing in common they understand the cost of embarrassment because you do like Like you have to go through a period of just like people are truly sending it in the group chat.

4:46Okay. So I want to build off this because I saw a great tweet the other day. Okay. And it said, nobody is good when they first start. Nobody is bad after 10 ,000 tries. And so I think where that gets tricky in all of this is I think when you start, like, I think very few people start making content and are naturally good at it. And so you're going out and you're making stuff that is, you know, often either cringeworthy or bad. And you're doing that publicly. like in in a normal business when you make a bad decision the only people that see it are within like the ecosystem of that business but when you know to kind of like play um uh the empathy to to to you know give empathy to those who aren't putting it out it's like it's because like the the failure is so public and you're just not going to be as good at it at the start as you are 10 000 tries later and so like can you power through is is the question can you power through it's gonna people are gonna say something like people that are close to you they're gonna say something number two you're gonna have a time where like your your comments are mean like and it'll be the video you don't think it and it'll be something that you did that you're like wait what that's what got people mad can you power through that like nobody and here's the thing like everybody thinks not not everybody thinks but nobody everyone starts with a thousand followers and like that's where you have to start is this interesting yeah so it's awkward no one starts with a hundred thousand followers unplanned yeah well we can move on i just i want to say this p brought me um texas roadhouse peanuts a novel day for me because and harrison then tells me which i knew this was going to be the case he's never been to texas roadhouse the Bloomin' Onion and the rolls are like now I want them very badly I'm afraid to go get the Bloomin' Onion though because I wonder if it's what I remember I don't think it's from Texas Roadhouse is it?

7:01Well they have it I think the famous Bloomin' Onion is Outback Steakhouse I think you're right, I was thinking that but like they have it have you guys heard of that thing, that restaurant called Chain? no so this is a cool concept and what they do is they is they recreate the iconic fast food dishes at like a fancy restaurant. So they have like a fancy Bloomin' Onion and like fancy Taco Bell. It's like a LA kind of thing. Okay, I'm not mad about that. What's the ambiance like? I think it's like a celebrity thing. The ambiance is that? It's like started by one of those... Restauranteurs? Like, yeah, some people.

7:44But is it cool on the inside? because like I don't want this to be a cheesy restaurant I think it's really well done okay that's cool and then I think they have a fest and I don't know the exact details but we're in LA next week and if they do have an actual I don't know if it's a pop-up or not Jules you're researching it says something about things being invite only okay can we try we can text again on the list let's try let's try to get the invite to go to chain okay We'll try. All right. Let's talk. Let's do our IRL stuff. And then we're going to get into some other stuff. How vague. Yeah. I think that the rap on it, though, is like I think that a lot of the times it's easier said than done to just like I do think there's an element where like you just need to try and you just need to go.

8:34If it was easy, everyone would do it. Yes. But I do think with content, it is harder than most things because like you fail out loud. It's awkward. You are failing out loud and needing the confidence and putting yourself out there out loud. It takes, it's hard to do it. I struggle with it. It's why I don't post a lot. Totally. Totally. I get it. Okay. Jonas Brothers concert. I, okay. So where to begin? ever since I met Harrison November 4th I knew that you had oh my gosh no whenever were you was Anna at a Jonas Brothers concert when her and I were first talking yeah we went to the Philadelphia concert a big group of us okay so the girl that set Harrison and I up who actually came in town last week and came over and was hanging out with the Bubberator um whenever we were first talking she was like I'm at a Jonas Brothers concert let's get together next week she was at a Jonas Brothers concert with you so I always knew the Jonas Brothers were a big part of your life and tell us again how many concerts you've been to oh a lot like 33 now oh I I couldn't I couldn't put I thought we used to have a number no because I've never I've never tracked it but But the – so they had – Wait, somebody DM'd me and said I was listening to you guys on the podcast and I was on the airplane and I lost Wi-Fi for 30 seconds.

10:07So we sat in silence for 30 seconds and I responded. I said, I'm sure you didn't lose Wi-Fi. I bet Harrison was just thinking. I sat there and laughed at myself. I was like, that was funny, Alex. spit it out today's episode is brought to you by fabletics you guys i love fabletics and guess who else loves fabletics harrison when you live in activewear you can never have enough especially when you're a mom and a dad running around constantly it's the best to have cute good quality activewear and the good stuff usually cost a fortune but that's why we love fabletics you can get pieces that feel premium and perform like the expensive brands without the crazy price tag becoming a fabletics vip is simple when you sign up as a new vip you get 80 off of literally everything you guys and after that the membership is about 60 a month unless you decide to skip it that monthly fee gives you exclusive membership benefits including a credit that you can use towards a full outfit or a bundle up to 100 it's truly unbelievable you guys the quality is so incredible the pieces feel like the kind of high-end active where you'd pay hundreds of bucks for, but you're not having to.

11:58Um, so no one's back checking. Okay. So, so the, the background and context here is, is I started a business with them called Rob's backstage popcorn, which, uh, they've been, they were eating a popcorn backstage for a decade created by their guitarist father rob uh and they wanted to turn it into a brand so we did that with them it's been a ton of fun we launched the the brand initially on uh their remember this tour yes uh via partnership with live nation that was a really fun and unique way to introduce the brand to market. And then they went on tour again, a year and a half later, plus minus for the album.

12:45And we were super integrated into that tour as well. And so between those two, I've been to a lot of shows and now they're on another tour for their 20 year anniversary they are so much fun these these shows jules was there what'd you think it was great my favorite part was when big rob came out i was actually shaking who's big rob their security guard oh jules is like a lifelong fan you have any concerts have you been to 12. i think that was like nine or nine so my point is i've never seen them in concert and they are so so good i wanted to go i i haven't i don't have a lot of fomo when i'm pregnant but i one i know that they're like a big part of your life two i they're in austin and it was friday night and i wanted to go so bad but i just started getting sick around four and i was like i'm not going to be able to go so harrison went um he took his mom which was lovely because kathy was in town helping us with tate and we were she was able to put tate down and then go which was like best case scenario and you guys just had a great time we'll go to another show on this on this tour when you're feeling better i was hoping that's what i was going to ask you can we find a city and go a hundred percent i think and that was my that was my first show on this tour uh because because we're the popcorn isn't um integrated into this tour the way it was the pat the past ones so i just got spotify like back maybe with july yeah and you know they do the rap and since I've only had it for six months by the time they do the rap, I believe year 3000 will now be on my top three most played songs because I have not stopped listening to it It's a classic SOS is good What's your favorite, Jules?

14:34They didn't do it, Hold On Five More Minutes is a great one They didn't play Walls My other favorite is Mandy Do you know that song? It was their first song and they did the music video in Chicago They got chased by a cop okay i i i mean i'm sure i could another favorite jules is watching music videos i mean when i was 12 yeah true yeah their ability to bring it for 20 years is unbelievable it's unbelievable yeah very few people have have um have managed to have the success that they have for especially over such a long period of time no it's unbelievable and they don't have like their scandal like they deserve it they're they're they're genuinely great people yeah that's really nice to hear okay well buy rob's pop this is a rob's popcorn ad um okay i also want to talk about how we need to start wedding planning i i just i don't feel like doing it right now because like i don't feel good but i know that the timeline is going to sneak up on me then somebody dm'd me because i posted like i was doing a q a yesterday and somebody asked about wedding timing and i was like listen i think it'll be like five or six months after we have the baby and they were like Why wouldn't you just do a year so they can both walk down the aisle and be the flower girls or boys?

15:50I was like, well, that's not a bad idea. It's a great idea. I mean, I love when I hear things for the first time on the podcast. It is a very, very good idea. Food for thought. Having them both walk down the aisle, incredibly cute. Or we could pull a wagon. I was thinking on what you're saying with the planning thing. and like, you know, obvious, like, feels like that's somewhere where you're going to be taking the lead and. I'm so torn though, because now do you know my new thing? Let's hear. So, okay, this is a rabbit hole you got to follow me on, but there's this girl, she had a wedding, her sister's an influencer that I follow.

16:30She had the Jonas Brothers at the wedding now. And so then I followed the sister. She's on her honeymoon and the honeymoon is like, I don't know where she's at she's on one of those like huts though she was in she was in she was on a safari in africa and then they moved to the huts and i'm like well that looks lovely so i'm like do we just do like a really cool honeymoon and like a small wedding i have no idea i have no idea like the world is our oyster i'm so torn so what i think i'm going to do is storyboard out a bunch of ideas and then we can eliminate some okay so as we go on um on the honeymoon topic after having two babies in their two years i want to go sit somewhere there's a place stare at a wall there is a place that i've been saving with a pina colada for my honeymoon a country that tell us no what no what you're not going to tell us no i think i think it may be a surprise it is so good this place that um and i had probably two different options two different opportunities to go and i just said no that's because i was on the quest of uh visiting every country in the world which i don't think is now going to happen no i think you could do it after the kids go to college i don't think you want to go to a lot of the countries in the world i don't and so I think that it's going to be hard actually I think Alex Kost and I yeah that could be something that we do for like our 60th birthdays where we kind of spend you know great idea like that that actually could be a lot of fun if we're like our 60th birthday we go on a six-month trip and then all the places that you and Laura want to come, you meet us at.

18:24Yeah, that's great. I'm all for that. Okay. But hold on. On this honeymoon place, just tell me this. Is the weather and the climate tropical? Yes, beautiful. Okay, so one thing, one area, there's not a lot of areas where you've let me down. One area where you have let me down is the other day. But that's it. That's the only area. We're not keeping that in. we can just bleep it just bleep all of it just bleep every word i said in the sentence it's so great it's i'm joking did you hear it yeah oh no no no okay absurd um okay but one area where like i would blindly follow you is travel you logistically like the only trip i've ever planned was our la hotels when we went out there to that spot like wreck we ended up moving hotels like wreck and so i'm just not the person for it like logistically flights hotels restaurants you are the best so i'm excited for this a lot of experience so like i would happily go on a surprise honeymoon with you with pleasure yeah i think the important part of it would be you know you being you letting me know like what you care about and what type of experience you're looking for and then me planning around that this place though based off of what you've said to me I definitely will think think will land I like don't want to leave the hotel maybe once or twice for a really cool dinner or an excursion but I want a hotel and I want the hotel to have a lot to do well I just want to chill the gate the thing that we discussed that we did discuss about this is doing and when I say discussed there was a text send if we do the first half of the honeymoon with Bubz and baby number two.

20:13Yeah, Jellybean. And then the second half of The Honeymoon Just Us. Who's like flying them though for 12 hours home? I have a plan. Okay. I have a plan. Okay, because. I have a plan. It's seeming, oh, that's a lot of logistics, but we'll work on it. Okay. I wanted to talk about the Louvre robbery. I would love to talk about this. People are ecstatic. they're thrilled to have an old school crime back you know no cyber hacking just an old school blue collar robbery i keep seeing things that are like imagine like this song playing in the background as you get away with you i'm just mad they dropped the crown like you had one job and they did pretty darn good and then they dropped the crown but like what is happening let's talk about magnetic me because Bubbers loves her magnetic me.

21:07And the other day she was wearing the pink and white striped pajamas and they were edible on her. And here's the thing, guys. We're going back into the newborn phase come April. So we are going to stock up on magnetic me because changing a newborn baby is like changing a cat. It is impossible. And you do not want to waste time with the zippers or the buttons. You want a magnetic close because it is unbelievable. Too good to be true. And moms, if you're breastfeeding, you want the women's pajamas. is they are so comfy and they are so easy to open and close. Magnetic Me's clothing makes changing time quick and easy.

They save you so much time. So do what I did and order Magnetic Me today to make changing time easier for you and your little one. And these make a great gift for friends or families with babies too especially moms who are expecting for the first time give them magnetic me because it will change their life new customers get 15 off your first order when you go to magneticme.com don't wait order today at magneticme.com did you know the mona lisa was stolen for two years no i had no idea yeah somebody had it for two years and they found it got it back do you think everyone should get like a chance to like steal a painting and like there need to be rules like You can't have any armed weapons on you.

22:35Okay, I agree. But if you can get in to the museum without setting off the alarms. Which they did. Without hurting anyone. Which they did. You get to keep it. No, that's what everyone's saying. Everyone's like, just let them have it. They earned it. No one was hurt. No one was hurt. That's what I love. That's what I love. Everyone would have a different tone if somebody got hurt. Nobody was hurt. And even if we're talking like no security guard was pushed over. Nobody got hit in the face. They just went in and out in four minutes. Do you think you'd be a good burglar? No. Where I think I would be good is like, have you seen the movie Focus with Will Smith and Margot Robbie?

23:19Of course. That's a good one. That's kind of an area where I think I would be okay because there's some talking and interpersonal things happening, but just strictly going in and out in four minutes, no. Did you hear about like what they think they're going to do with the jewels? What do they think? Dismantle them and sell them? So I heard that there's two potential tracks. One is that this was like a privately mandated job. So like someone wanted the stuff specifically and paid the people to go get it. Holler. And so now it's going right into someone's private collection. Love it. Like I'm for that.

23:53Okay. and then the the other option though and and and i think that's kind of interesting um and then the second is they are gonna melt it all down and break it apart and get it and like try and get cash for it very very not down with that i don't like that one as much i think that these jewels like they need to stay intact if it's going to someone's private collection and then in like five years somebody ends up finding it it goes back into the museums that's cool this is cool because nobody was hurt. But I love the idea of some like multi-billionaire being like, I'll give you each a million dollars, go get this thing.

24:29I just wonder if when they didn't come back with the crown, if then the million dollars turned 800 grand, you know, did he dock some? I don't know. Or if this was a movie, the crown that was dropped would have been like a fake crown to throw everyone off. That would have been good. Juicy. Yeah, maybe it was. all i know is i don't think they're gonna find these guys because they don't have security cameras in that area so they got nothing they're not gonna find them it's pretty incredible it's pretty incredible let's move on but i just gotta give a round of applause and tiktok was loving it when alex is pregnant she gets more interested in anything online going on online i have a couple more things to talk about yeah gotta do some more reading um okay now we're gonna talk about the tater totski and then we're gonna talk about pregnancy so the totski is having an eventful week she's dropped from one nap no tate's dropped from two naps to one nap and the reason we did that was because on saturday she started boycotting her second nap like when i say boycotting her second nap she's like standing in her crib bouncing jumping screaming so we're like she doesn't want to take it so we didn't give her her second nap she was fine she went to bed at seven she slept till 7 30 a.m no problem sunday i was like let's just try and drop the nap like we've already done it one day let's do a second day no problem so we're on day four of one nap and so a lot of people said why she dropped from two to one nap she dropped from two to one nap because she naturally started boycotting her second nap now the new thing that's occurred is the past two days she's woken up at four.

26:09The first day that she woke up at four, she stayed awake. And I'm telling you what, this baby was wide awake, like having a blast. So I had her yesterday morning, this morning, Harrison got her. She woke up and then he took her downstairs and was feeding her. And she was like falling asleep while she was eating. So he was like, okay, well, she's still tired. So then you put her back to bed and she slept for two hours. Um, there's a, there's a 12 month sleep regression. I assume we're going through that. We asked chat GBT and with the 12 month Sleep regression is things like food, having opinions on food, which is starting to happen.

26:44Really crying when a parent leaves the room, which is definitely happening. So she's got, I think she's just going through a regression. So what we're going to do is give it a week and then reassess. But it just might be one of those weeks where we get up at four every day. Like we'll just have to see. But that never really bothers me. We've done this a lot before. Yeah. You've done a very good job at really staying on the transitions, right? Like the transitions from dropping a bottle to dropping the nap. I feel like often I operate under the mindset of, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And...

27:21But she naturally tells us. For sure. But you're really on the ball with like, okay, how does what she's telling us line up with the traditional sequence of events? But where... And then the question... Give me some flowers here. Thank you. Thank you. And then the question's going to be like, how do you, how do I know, how did I even know to drop a nap? And a lot of it's talking to my mom friends. Like, that's where mom friends, even if you don't have a friend, like a mom friend connection in person, just like a texting one. But anyways, so, okay, we're also brushing her teeth now. That's a new one with a little finger toothbrush.

27:57It's so cute. It looks like a, like a thimble with like spikes on the bottom. And you get this little baby toothbrush. That's to avoid bottle rot. but the other thing we got to do is officially cut the bottles i want to better understand this okay if she so you're supposed to cut all the bottles by 15 months we know how i feel about this like supposed to do it by x like take it or leave it i want to try to do it by then because then i know it gets harder because she gets smarter so the reason you cut it is she doesn't need them anymore and you don't want her to become too attached to it okay but i think on the other end like i've noticed that she eats really slow like she loves food but she eats really really slow and and we i find that we struggle to get her full without the bottle no we were getting her like and still are getting her really really full that's why she doesn't drink all her bottles she just drinks like two to three ounces so now it's a crutch so what we got to do is move to the sippy cup with milk in it we just got to try it we just got to try it we just got to cut them we're gonna do it we're gonna so we'll report next we're gonna start i i trust you okay so we're gonna start to cut it we're gonna i don't think she loves the taste of milk and if she doesn't love the taste of milk it's fine we can just give her yogurt which we have in the fridge always i like that sammy's milk thing i've been doing but that's formula honey no that's like a that is it that is a toddler version you can give it to her in a sippy cup though okay we can't get her attached to the bottle i like all the nutrients in it yeah it's just it that's fine but we just need to put it in a bottle or in a sippy cup okay okay so that's the thing going on with vibrator um pregnancy update i started wearing these seasick bands i do they work the first day i think it was placebo because i felt the best i felt in four or five weeks was Monday night like yesterday not so hot this morning I put a new one on and I feel great right now great stretch I feel good right now and we're starting to trend I can tell it's coming on the nausea is coming on but I I haven't done like multiple throw-ups in a day and probably like four or five days so that's been really nice so I mean the weekend you were yep you were puking yeah you know it's Wednesday so three days okay so three days okay and we'll call that that's great that's really exciting amazing so thank you um I don't know like I just think listen I had a great day Monday and then I thought I always do this I think I'm over it I've made it and it's like then yesterday I'm humbled again so I just have to take it day by day and say I don't know how I'm going to feel and I canceled a coffee this morning I probably could have gone but I told her yesterday and she's also pregnant I said hey today's a bad day I don't know what tomorrow holds and we record tomorrow so all of my energy has to go to that so here's my observation okay my observation is we are seeing minor week-on-week improvements I think you're right and it's hard to remember and it's hard to remember that and i'm judging by just like obviously what you're telling me but how much time you're spending in bed versus how much time you're spending um kind of on the move and just like the general like just my general read on on your levels so like i am in well i i like i feel for you every single day i am encouraged at at the trending like three weeks ago I think what like we maybe not like forgetting is like there was a three-day period where you actually didn't get out of bed you could not get out of bed like yeah you you had to have I actually don't think we've talked about this um things were so bad you couldn't have a screen on so you couldn't have the TV on no light you couldn't look at your phone you couldn't turn on the hallway light like you were i've never seen um someone so sick so like buried in my bed oh it's awful i gotta i gotta you know give you encouragement that i'm i'm i'm seeing it and i i know like you're still feeling rough but that no that's really that's really good and true and like we have a girls night tonight and i really want to go and i told you this morning like there's always a chance like everything's 50 50 for me right now but i could have never gone my prediction my prediction is you're gonna go tonight because like friday i knew you weren't gonna make it to the concert you can tell in the morning i can tell where like based off the pop in your step and it feels like even if today is even if you feel best in the morning, it feels like what are you coming, what's the high you're coming off of?

33:06And today it feels like you're coming off of a good high. I don't know, as the outsider. Well, do you know what I'm trying to do today? What? What I'm trying to do in general? What? I do think my outfits, like I do think getting up and getting dressed to some capacity helps a little bit. Makes a lot of sense. So I am trying to like not wear pajamas. The second I put my PJs on, it's over. So I'm going to try to wear this all the way to the girls night tonight. You look amazing. Well, it's not the point, but like I'm just saying, getting dressed a bit helps. This show is brought to you by BetterHelp.

34:57That's BetterHelp, H-E-L-P.com slash two parents. Okay, so now we're going to move on to Picker of the Week. Okay. And this one came up last night. We were driving. Well, I was actually driving, and I needed my gum out of my purse. And so I was like, hey, can you get my gum out of my purse? Turns out, Harrison's like, I can't find the gum in the purse. And I'm like, hand it to me. I know I can find it. I actually didn't put the gum in my purse. but it sparked a question because Harrison's point was I can't find anything in your purse ever and it's a disaster like I have a diaper in there I got all this stuff thrown in my purse and I know where everything is right because it's messy but it's mine so the point Harrison made was when you ask for something specific out of your purse should I bring you the specific thing out of your purse and go deep dive into that hole or should I just bring you your whole purse And I felt like Growing up You were always told Like never look In a woman's purse That's very true Right And never do And never look In a woman's purse And so I feel like I am Like I don't know How to navigate the purse You can look in my purse But it's intimidating Like I just When you tell me To go and look For something in there It's a deep dark hole It's just there's 80 items I don't wanna And they're random I'm like, there's jewelry just in case I'm out and about and want earrings.

36:15Here's my question for you. Okay. Is there any organization, like, you know how sometimes like you're messy, like people can be messy organized. Like the pile of clothes in our room, while it looks messy, I can tell you exactly where everything is. Right. And so my concern is like, when I look at the purse and it's so messy, one, it's going to take me forever to find it. But two, like, I'm going to mess up whatever organization you had here. I don't have like organization within them within the purse like within the different pouches no but because I just throw everything in there but I do know everything that's in there like I have my backup lip gloss and my real lip gloss I have my earrings in there in case I'm ever caught out and about and don't have my earrings on I will never wear these earrings I have my wallet but then I have like two cards strung in the thing in case my wallet's out like it's a disaster I have a diaper loose I have a formula packet loose I have like wipes loose it's like it's ridiculous in there yeah I just I have receipts I have gum the like obviously I'm happy to do it no I know you are I do think it makes a little bit more to bring the purse what is the most like efficient way to deal with this process and that is I think I bring you the purse yeah unless I'm driving I think you gotta dive in there and find it that's the only caveat yes and the gum wasn't in there there's so much like digging there's so much like searching that I get nauseous it is it's a lot of searching i agree i've kind of come on your side of the bicker of the week so now that we've solved the bicker of the week and i kind of conceded is that the word because at a war term yeah so the takeaway is i think you just bring them the purse unless their hands are tight like if i'm holding tate you gotta get it unless you actually like need the help it's just not an efficient process yeah i know i agree um Okay, so now we're going to talk about school because Harrison sent a very interesting statistic.

38:13Would you like to present it to the class? What the tweet said is by the time your kid enters kindergarten, over 40 % of your parenting time has already passed. And by middle school, it's already two-thirds gone. That is so crazy to think about how limited time you have with your kid actually at home. Exactly. Then I also saw 15 ,000 extra hours if you homeschool them because you're with them. Yeah. And so that kind of opened up the can of worms of like, how are we thinking about schooling? And I'm not thinking about homeschooling. When they get into, listen, do I want to keep bubs at home and around the house as much as possible?

38:56Yes. because like right now this morning for example we were watching the spanish version of if you're happy and you know it clap your hands and they were stomping their feet then there was like a oh no and winnie and tate like clap and they can and we it was us and the neighbors just standing in a circle watching them and like moments like that are so precious and like being so involved in this dropping of the nap yes all of this stuff is really beautiful and really fun but where where I'm at on this is I don't want to go in blind as to this is the way that things need to be done right like I don't want to be a she needs to go to private school she needs to go to public school she can't homeschool what I want to do is I want to look holistically end to end at all the different schooling options and then come to some come to a conclusion of something that we are both excited about for each specific child.

39:52And so I think the second layer to it as well is like, I don't think we should be making blanket schooling decisions for all of our kids. I think we should do it on a kid by kid, a kid by kid basis. And so I encourage, like I don't have a view on homeschooling yet, but what I hope you would do is I hope that you will look at homeschooling and the benefits and the negatives. And I hope that you'll weigh it as a potential option the way that will weigh all everything. Let me jump in here. When I, what I've just realized is when I think of homeschooling, I think of me homeschooling just Tate. That's not your idea of it, is it?

40:34No, no. Because I am not for that. Yes. It feels isolating for the both of us. Yes. Some people love it. It would not be for me. Totally. But are you down for a school at home with six kids that's taught by somebody like an extension of the nanny share i think that that's something that i think that's me not home school though that's a school at home i think i think i'm getting tripped up on the word okay and and that's totally fair that's totally fair um so um long-winded way of now getting to the alpha school yes but harrison you cannot just jump to the alpha school okay sorry you can but you're going to have to explain the Alpha School.

41:15The Alpha School is an AI-powered school. It's like a very new age style school. Which sounds off-putting. If I'm the listener, I'm like an AI school, so keep going. Yes. Because I thought this too, guys. And so I think where they're quite different than traditional schools is they only do two hours of traditional learning a day, and then the rest of the day is spent building life skills like um so i found this is really interesting i want to pull up i pulled up some of the life skills per grade so i guess to before we do that so we went to like a seminar education last night to to hear more about it and it was the kids did the presentation the girl presenting used aggregate and quantifiable she was so smart so well spoken she was in what she had a makeup brand she was launching a makeup brand a skin through the school skincare for athletes because she said it's a white space this is future presidential candidate and and the boy was doing the y combinator for um teenagers which is like an accelerator like a startup accelerator program so that's that's a great kind of build on that's a great build on into the life skills that the school encourages you to develop and gives you time at school to do it so those are examples of two life skills public speaking entrepreneurship that you take on um the other thing that they said that i thought was really interesting is they pulled up a chart on um like happiness polling at traditional schools which is like i hated school i hated school i would get up and i dreaded going and i felt like that was really common with a lot of my peers totally and and that was common whether you went to public school whether you went to private school you know like generally speaking i felt like satisfaction rates amongst students is very low and their satisfaction rates are 95 percent of their students are happy um and then the other thing that really jumped out to me was so they don't call them teachers they call them guides but the guides get reviewed by the students and if the guides have bad reviews from the students the guides are fired and i found that incredibly empowering and this is not we're talking high school so this isn't um obviously for like pre-k because it's pre-k through 12 um so we're talking about the high school uh seminar that that they spoke to yesterday i where i found that really empowering is like we had teachers growing up that were unbelievable.

44:21Um, and, uh, some of which I'm still in contact with today, but there were other teachers that were a problem and their problem for me and their problem for a lot of kids. And we felt helpless in terms of what we could do about it. And, um, you know, they were protected. And I thought that it's really cool to be taking into account the, um, the high schoolers feedback. So, yeah. Well, I saw a clip go viral on something of a girl talking to her teacher and the class average on a test was a 41. Yeah. She raised her hand and she said, if the class average is a 41, we're not set up to succeed. Like that's a you problem, not a student problem because like we're not equipped enough for this test.

Read the full transcript

45:09And I thought that's really interesting because here's a bunch of kids that are going to get, you know, C's on their transcripts when the vast majority of them in other classes you know this is a girl that like cares about her grades you know she might be an A B student in other classes but like this class it's just impossible to pass like some students some teachers classes are so hard they like take joy in people failing them yeah no totally um and that's obviously like not that's not obviously what you expect to or that's obviously not like what's most common but it does exist and um and it's it's hard to actually do something about it when the review goes both ways both parties are incentivized to kick butt yeah which is awesome um and uh and and the test scores coming out of the school are incredible just like well well well above the national average and the act sats which was what i was worried about because if they're not learning traditional curriculum i didn't know if they'd do well on those tests but the averages were unbelievable and so what they're saying is through using the latest tools you know they're accomplishing anywhere from two to six x your traditional um school output and and like this school to be clear it's like it is private it is expensive but and so it's it's going to only be for a small group of people but where I get encouraged about it is hoping that like they're setting a framework that can then be replicated by other schools as um as well you know especially with the focus on on building life skills so do you want to respond to that or do you want me to talk about some of the life skills that they um well I want to I just want to say on the private versus public topic Like we've got really, really, really great public schools here in Austin.

47:02So I think Harrison and I are both the lion in the fact that like we wouldn't pay for a private school when the educations are going to be comparable in our opinion. And there's a lot we find appealing about public school. Totally. Now paying for this private school, I don't have as much of a problem with because it's a completely different kind of education. And to be clear, I love the idea of private schools too. It's just for us in the area that we live it doesn't make sense and it's just not something that we want to do Everyone has their options So if you do private school more power to you a lot of my best friends do them and they absolutely love them, but Harrison went private.

47:39I was public growing up and like the area we live in has great public schools We can walk to some of them. So I think we're inclined for that path But what's appealing about this is a totally different kind of education And I think to tie back into what we're saying at the beginning of conversation. I think that our default base rate is public but kid by kid basis but getting smart on it making sure that is the right call and doing it on yes a kid a kid by kid basis um and also understanding like we're we're very early to this like we have another three years before she gets into pre-k but yes i do want i want to on you what you're saying i do think that if we have four kids two might go public to my go private.

48:20It'll very much so be case by case basis. Okay. So should we do the skills lately? We've been reaching for the same thing for lunch and dinner multiple times a week, you guys. And that is Goodles. Goodles tastes just like the Mac and cheese we all know and loved, but it's packed with protein and nutrients. And the newly launched single serve cups are perfect for busy schedules. You guys, you get the single serve cup, you add water, you pop it in the microwave and you take it with you on the go. It tastes delicious and it's high protein. Also, if you're lactose intolerant, like I used to be, you guys, they've got a vegan option for you too.

48:59As parents, we often make sacrifices to save time, but Goodall's cups are delicious and they are quick and they are easy to make. Every serving of Goodall's mac and cheese has 14 grams of protein, seven grams of fiber with prebiotics and 21 vitamins and minerals from real plant sources. You guys, that is incredible. It's a low glycemic index food, which means it provides steady energy instead of a carb crash. Do what we did. Get yourself some Goodles. We know you're going to love them too. Pick up Goodles on your next shopping trip. It's available nationwide at Target and Walmart, plus many other major grocery stores and retailers.

49:36And don't forget the new single serve cups. Hey, it's Kelly Rowland. You may not know this, but I have eczema, so I get how it can steal your time. But why let eczema take over when you can talk to your doctor about eczema? Ebglis Lubrikizumab LBKZ, a 250 milligram per two milliliter injection, is a prescription medicine used to treat adults and children 12 years of age and older who weigh at least 88 pounds or 40 kilograms with moderate to severe eczema. Also called atopic dermatitis that is not well controlled with prescription therapies used on the skin or topicals or who cannot use topical therapies, EBCLIS can be used with or without topical corticosteroids.

50:13Don't use if you are allergic to EBCLIS. Allergic reactions can occur that can be severe. Eye problems can occur. Tell your doctor if you have new or worsening eye problems. You should not receive a live vaccine when treated with EBCLIS. Before starting EBCLIS, tell your doctor if you have a parasitic infection. Paid partnership with Lilly. Respect your time. Ask your doctor about EBCLIS and visit EBCLIS.com. Or call 1-800-LILLY-RX or 1-800-545-5979. nine so um starting with grades k through one he's doing the skills now they train you to ride five miles on a bike without stopping what grades and they they list a bunch of of the different life skills so these are just random ones that i pulled that i thought were interesting um grades two to three um you present the news live in front of the entire school love that yeah and and just like amazing at, you know, recognizing the age, what they can do with that age and then incorporating relevant life skills in terms of researching the ability to digest what's happening in the world today, summarize it, and then communicate it and deal with, with, um, public speaking skills, which is something that most people have, have struggled with.

51:29And I struggle with, uh, today. Um, Um, the, this is probably, this is definitely my favorite one that they do for grades four to five is they launch a food truck. Okay. So they launched a food truck called little dippers and they did French toast and waffles. And what all the kids learn through setting up this food truck is they learn things like how to organize and resource. So like there's a head chef, there's a line cook, there's someone working the register. They learn about inventory planning. They learn about financial literacy. So at the end of every day, they're looking at, all right, how much did we sell?

52:26What did we charge for? All right, when we went to HEB, how much did we pay for these items on a per unit basis? oh yeah and and you know what i read start a food truck it sounded like really crazy and bougie but in reality what they did is they did all this planning work in the in the classroom and then they went to heb they ordered the product and you know their work they created a logo for it on canva bubber is a line cook and then they sold they sold it at the school and so they they sold 14 waffles so like they didn't sell a crazy amount of product but they sold enough to to you know put put the the process to work and and test the and learn most importantly like learn yeah learn um and uh and then for high school we talked about one of the kids had the white well i combinated for teens and the other had had the skincare brand so um overall i thought it was really really cool and obviously we have a couple more years until bubs is eligible for their earliest program which is which is pre-k and i think that depending on you know how she matures and grows maybe this could be a great a great option for her and and maybe not but either way love that new age schooling like this exists and they're trying new stuff.

54:02And how many are there in the United States? How many of these alpha schools? So I believe it started in Austin and now they're in 15 different cities. And there's Dallas, there's like Houston, there's a lot in Texas. Plano? And then like San Francisco, there's one in New York City, you know, things like that. But I thought it was really fascinating. This is not sponsored by the Alpha School. No, not in any way. It was Harrison just like taking it by the bull by the horns and we went. Yeah, I love to learn and see what's out there. And as someone especially who really struggled in school and like I don't want Tate to have the same struggles in school that I did.

54:46But you also said you think youth that embrace AI, like that's the future of our, that's the future of this generation. So youth that learn how to embrace it early, it will help them in life. Yeah, I think holistically across the board, anyone who embraces AI for their life and jobs is going to be and do it the right way is going to be at a significant advantage over those who don't. And so to take that a step further and bring it to schooling, I think that those schools that incorporate AI into learning the right way will put their children in a much, much better place. and the same way things can be used the right way they can be used the wrong way.

55:38And so I think that using AI right is going to be what's very, very important. And that's where hopefully the schooling systems can nail it. Totally. Totally. Okay. Let's move on to things we DMed. Okay. I think I'm just going to put a bow on that, though. I think it was very fascinating. I love that we think about schools differently. Like it's not just enroll and go. And we're obviously, you know, understand our fortunate situation to, to do that. Oh, wait, I have some train. Wait, hold on. Okay. On, there was something you said etiquette wise that sparked that I wanted to ask you these questions.

56:22Oh, teachers. Yes. The fact that they call teachers guides made me think like, do they still call her or him Mr. Mrs. Smith? So I wanted to do a rapid fire etiquette that still matters to you. Do you think they should call teachers Mr. and Mrs.? Insert last name here. I think that the default should be Mr. and Mrs. I think that if a teacher says otherwise, because that's the relationship they want to have with the student, then play it to the individual. Okay. Do you think that kids should have their elbows off the table still? He didn't know elbows had to be off the table. No, I just like. No.

57:03I think that there's very clearly you. I think it's very clear whether or not you you have good you're having good table manners or bad table manners. And elbows to me aren't a defining factor of that. I agree. Like it depends how it's done. Are you like listening intently at at the conversation ahead or are you like slouched over your plate? Slouched over your plate. Exactly. Exactly. Do you think that kids, when they go to other kids' house, should always say hi to the parents? A hundred percent should go and seek out the parents. If the parents are in the yard, you go to the yard and you say hello and you say thank you for having us.

57:41And just wanted to let you know I'm here. Always, always, always, always. And the same thing when you leave. Completely agree. Must say goodbye. Do you think that kids should write thank you notes when they receive gifts? I think that this is the number one thing that we are not doing that we should be doing a much better job at is our thank you notes we just ordered stationary though it says Alex and Harrison yeah I think that stationary notes are are but this is one that like going when you go to someone's house you and you say hi to the parents that to me is like a 100 % hit rate thank you notes I think are something that like in theory versus reality can be different where like you know your life can be crazy and things can slip through the cracks and that doesn't mean it's okay right but like it does take time and then you're dropping it off and yeah yeah but you're dropping it off in the mail right station right right right right I agree I agree you need the stamps and etc etc it's a lot bigger lift like as opposed to I do agree on the height of parents is a non-negotiable should kids ask to be excused from the dinner table um hmm interesting what do you think so yes on the guise of like i don't they don't necessarily need to say can i be excused but i do want them to like finish eating or say like hey i'm done guys i am going to get up now because i do want the dinner table to be like a family thing where we have family meals so i don't want it to be like so you can leave and run around and come back like i do kind of want us all to sit and chat yes but i don't love the permission element i agree i don't need like the can i get up and leave i do just like the hey guys i am gonna like yeah like hey that meal was great thank you yeah um but i don't want it to be like pop in pop out pop it like go do this do that because i do want us to sit and talk for a second um when a boy picks up a girl for the date should he go and address the father yes for sure coming from a dad for sure and i did learn this the hard way yes no yeah my grade 10 girlfriend i hope that dad ripped you a new one so that that is a mistake i i never made again did your parents your parents of course told you to go say hi you just said i'm not gonna do it well look i don't think my parents knew what i was what i was doing i can't even i can't hear this story i'm mortified okay last one um oh this could be our picker of the week any week.

1:00:13Don't show up empty handed to a house. If you are coming to our house, then please never, ever bring anything. But it's a double standard. When I go somewhere, I will always, always bring something. I hate going anywhere empty handed. And it doesn't need not something big, whether it's a, you know, a bottle of wine, a six pack of beers, um you know some dessert flowers dessert tray from the store if if anything is being served at the house then i feel it is it is appropriate to make something but what's the line like at what point do you stop taking it to emma's house for example like i i don't feel the need to take something to her house when she hosts us anymore i i disagree i think yeah but it's when they become your really good friend like you gotta not i think there's too much pressure like i just want people to relax and everybody wants us to do the same thing okay so this is now i'm gonna like cut cut the nuance bit okay cut to the nuance so if you're a very good friend then typically what i will bring will be what either I know you want or what I want.

1:01:33So like Emma, for example, like Jeff likes heavy beers. I like light beers. So I'm going to bring light beers to their house. Right. Cause they have heavy. Yes. Yeah. Or we could always take Aperol too. And I also know that Jeff always has heavy beers there. Yeah. And I'll always text and say, sorry to add it on, I will text and say, can we bring anything? They will always say no. If they don't say no, I'll love and be happy to go get it. If they say no, don't bring anything, then I bring the light beers. Yeah. I do think that I just, I don't want the pressure of like having to take flowers every time.

1:02:14What I am down to do though, is like right now I have a stock of pumpkin spice candles in case we go somewhere. I can just take one for the season. But like, if I don't have it on hand, And so where do we disagree on this? Because you said this is a bicker of the week. I just, this isn't a bicker of the week. This is an etiquette question. You said it could be a bicker of the week. Well, because I think after I've been twice to someone's house, I'm like, I don't need to take anything anymore. And you do still feel like you were raised to not show up empty-handed. And I should have caught this.

1:02:44Whenever you came to my parents' house for the first time, you brought, I don't remember, but I was like, wait, you're bringing a gift? And then when we went to your parents' house for the first time, you dropped a hint to me like what are you going to take and I was like why would I take anything so then I ended up like getting something but I it's never dawned on me that like it could be perceived as rude to not bring something like it's never dawned on me yeah and it's it's just about letting them know you were thinking about them and etiquette wise you would actually think I'm far more like etiquette obsessed than you are so you think we'd be reversed on I'm I'm I'm very etiquette obsessed.

1:03:20I think the one etiquette piece that I've really that like was totally off my radar was obviously the garbage thing. I can't believe it. Which by the way, can we give a round of applause? You learned. Thank you. Yeah. You heard that message. The other, I have another one that I want to save for a future conversation. Okay, we'll save it. We'll save it. We'll move on now to things we DM'd. Okay, things we DM'd. Okay, there was this graphic of things that become impossible during pregnancy. And a few from the infographic are number one, tying your shoes at the end. I would love to tie your shoes.

1:04:05That's so cute. Thank you. I'll do your shoes and then Bubba's shoes. Yeah, you can't reach them. at the end right now i did something the other day her foot came out of the sandal and she was walking and she lifted her leg up so like i could fix it i will eat her like i literally cannot this is such a cute thing watching her brain work is amazing it's so cute like this um the other one is from the graphic is um you forget why you walked into a room and the other day i was trying to find my water but the other day i was trying to find my water and then I opened up the microwave because I was going to heat something up and my water was in there.

1:04:42And then this one happens to me all the time when I'm pregnant, my phone's in the fridge. And it's just like, so then if I lose my wallet, it's annoying because I'm like, I'm not going to be able to find it. Like it's somewhere not logical. It's like on top of a cabinet and I'm just like, I can't find it. I don't know. Okay, but I think there's also such thing as parent brain that goes. Because I've never, like before meeting you, before having Tate. Never lost your AirPods? I never lost my AirPods. And boy, can we not keep a pair of AirPods for more than three months. I have lost three pairs of AirPods this year.

1:05:14One are still at Dan's house. One is at the pediatrician. At least we know where two of them are. Yeah. And then my current pair is fully MIA. I know. So he's taking mine. And I have my one treadmill moment in the morning. I'm not using yours. Yeah, you are. But what you're doing really well about using mine is I use mine for one hour a day. And you give them back to me. That's all I want. I just want them back for my hour. I'm not using them, but. You are, I can tell. Okay, and then the second thing is we DM'd. When you're pregnant, did you know your heart literally grows? What I like about this is it's literal and metaphorical, okay?

1:05:51A pregnant person's heart actually increases in size and beats faster to pump up to 50 % more blood throughout the day, which makes a lot of sense. I can feel that. If I eat or if I walk up a hill, it's like I can feel it pumping extra hard. But they also say when you have a kid, your heart grows in size. And I feel that inside of me. Yeah. I think that is very cool. Does the dad's heart grow? Or does just the mom's heart grow? I think it grows metaphorically. Yeah. Like you care the way you've never cared before. I saw a really great Jerry Seinfeld clip earlier today about. Kids? basically someone at the interviewer asked him how is having kids change your life and his response is he looked at the guy and he said let me guess you don't have kids and he goes yep how do you know he's like because someone with kids would never ask that question love it because you just know get just know and i didn't know before but now i got it true um no shaming for those who don't have kids though it's great well we were we were those people for a very long time yep um Okay, I think that's a great place to end.

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, we’re covering it all — from our AI school tour (yes, AI school is a real thing??) to wedding and honeymoon updates (we may have picked a destination?? (& its a SECRET)) and life with a toddler who’s officially transitioning to one nap.

We’re also talking first-trimester nausea (Sea-Bands for the win - maybe??), Harrison’s (and Jules’!!!) Jonas Brothers concert night out (plus Rob’s Backstage Popcorn BTS), and a recap of the Louvre jewel heist bc  we can’t stop thinking about it.

Then, we get into etiquette that still matters (thank-you notes, “Mr.” and “Ms.”, saying hi to other parents) before Things We DMed Each Other — like the funniest things that are physically impossible during pregnancy and the fact that your heart literally grows while pregnant (!!!).

LOVE YOU GUYS!
