In short

U.S. maternity leave policy (no federal paid leave), impacts on postpartum parents, and what to do about it; plus parenting dynamics (bonding with baby #2, toddler tantrums with mom/dad vs grandma) and a brief discussion of why Americans call soccer “football.”

Guests

No guests are featured in the transcript; it’s hosted by the “Two Parents and a Podcast” hosts (Harrison and Jules).

Key claims

The U.S. has no federally mandated paid maternity leave; in 1919 the ILO maternity protection convention was adopted by 37 of 38 nations, but the U.S. did not. One in four American moms returns to work within two weeks, often due to financial need. Women with paid leave are far more likely to remain in the workforce months later. FMLA is unpaid and only about 40% of working women qualify.

Notable examples

Company policies like Netflix (up to a year), Google (about 35 weeks), and Starbucks (18 weeks paid for birth parents, including part-time baristas). McDonald’s is discussed as potentially limited because many locations are franchised.

It's the number one OBGYN recommended brand of emergency contraception, and it won't impact your future fertility. That's Freedom the B. Use as directed. Are we good? Are we recording? I really like this set you're wearing. And I say that, actually no pun intended.

0:40It is a set active set. Their color schemes are very nice. Well, where they crush it is they sent this to us all for free. Like they sent me three sets. And I love when PR does that because I will wear them. You'll be seen wearing them. Emma texted me. She's like, where'd you get that? What's the link? So I sent it to her. And it's like, it's a really good move for brands to do. So thank you. Free ad. Actually today, this is not a free ad at all. This is just life. I am going to their VIP opening of their Western. I think it's like a, I don't know, but I'm going to get more sets. Because also like, I just know the size that fits me right now.

1:15And like, I don't want to overcomplicate it. Like whatever. That's what I'm wearing. They look great. Thank you. I don't even put them up. I think he wants you to ask. Oh, oh, oh my gosh. Harrison, if you're going to live life like that, Just asking people questions so they ask you them back. Just tell me about your shirt. You know who knows me best? Who knows me best? Jules. Jules does. Jules knows me best. But if you're going to live asking people questions just so they reciprocate. I, hand to God, think, hand to God, I love those outfits. But you asked me. It was a genuine compliment. No, it wasn't.

1:51It's not genuine if you're asking, so I ask you back. No, it was a genuine compliment. Thank you. It was a genuine compliment. With intent? Do I want you to ask me about the World Cup outfit I'm wearing? Yes. Okay, we're getting into the episode before we do that. Welcome back to another episode of Two Parents and a Podcast. Harrison, why don't you, this is just a random thing I thought of, why don't you just tell us about your outfit today? Well, the first thing is I think I ordered this jersey. I think it's fake. So I think I'm wearing a fake jersey. How much was it? Look, look at the Nike check.

2:26It feels like it's off. I wouldn't have thought it was fake until you said that. Now I'm overanalyzing it. I don't know. How much was the jersey? And where did you order it from? I ordered it. I got an Instagram ad for it. Oh, could be fake. But I didn't think that you could run fake, like you could sell fake Nike stuff off Instagram. I don't know. That could be a gray area. And I loved it. They cross-sold me into a retro Adidas shirt. So I have two U.S. soccer jerseys. As any good brand would cross-sell you. That I think may be fake. And I'm like trying to figure out how to report it. And I just, I can't.

3:01No, there's a Nike. I think that would be a huge fraud situation. Yeah. You're not allowed to do that. But I'm trying to report it and no one's letting me report it. So. Interesting. Look, I, well, I emailed customer service and. But customer service for who? For the brand. But who's the brand? Who's the brand? This is a good point, Jules. All right. We're going to pull them up. The true bottom of this. We're going to pull them up. Because it's not Nike that we're emailing. It's not Instagram. Right. it's the person that served you the ad and yeah I'm sure you are allowed to sell fake things I gotta go to my archive I'm just gonna do a mega search the shirt plugs that sounds fake tell us how much the jersey was we need to know I know you're trying not to tell us but for research purposes please reveal the price I think each shirt was like 70 bucks that could be fake for a jersey for sure

3:54I actually think that's a fake jersey price can you google nike um well this is what this is like i think 94 the jersey that they wore like i remember this jersey growing up and so that's why i got so excited nike 94 world cup jersey how much is that going for so it looks like i got two how much is it saying um 90 dollars okay 60 dollars 80 dollars but i think they did the thing where like you did the discount and I was like yeah. $15 on Sheen. Yeah well. So I think the thing okay just tell us this are you going to watch the World Cup? Of course. Of course. And when's the first game? The first game is today.

4:37Mexico South Africa 2 p.m. Star Time. Okay great. Are you going to watch that? I think I'll probably work somewhere where it's on in the background. Okay. But then tomorrow Canada versus Bosnia at 2 p.m. That's a good one. And U.S. versus Paraguay at 8 p.m. Okay. Oh, tomorrow night, Friday night, 8 p.m. Game is fun. Yeah. So last night at Mahjong, because I hosted a Mahjong charity event, and a lot of the girls were saying they're going to watch the World Cup. I love this. And we had the Knicks game on, or the Spurs game, whatever you want to call it. We had the finals on. We were talking about the World Cup.

5:11It was really fun. And then people are watching, what's the hockey thing? What's that? What's the hockey thing on right now? The Stanley Cup? Oh, the Stanley Cup, yeah. Yeah, some girls are watching that too. So I was very impressed with everyone's sports knowledge, also game knowledge we were doing, and we were also pop culture, and it was a very well-rounded crew. I was going to say I feel like sports are a little more pop culture-y. Just in the past couple years. Jules, it's the best point on the planet. Last night, I've watched the clip a thousand times, Taylor walking out, Kylie hugging her at the game.

5:44Last night, the Knicks game. They had their shirts, the Nickelback, Stevie Knicks. It was really cute. It was really cute. It's very pop culture adjacent. Sports. F1. I mean, I'm going to watch that because Kim K is there. I was literally going to say the same thing. Putting that on the map, she didn't lose Hamilton. Saw that. Yeah. Saw that. See, we're all intertwined. Oh, where was I going with this? Oh, your Mahjong event. Yes. I think it deserves more airtime than that. I crashed it for about a minute and a half. Took a photo. You did. Thank you for taking the photo. It was a vibe, as they would say.

6:23It was great. I hosted a charity Mahjong event because, so you guys know I love the Jeremiah Program, which is here in Austin. It's actually a national charity. I think they have seven locations. It started in Minnesota. But anyways, it's single mothers here in Austin who are in pursuit of an education of some sort. So they're enrolled in college or they're pursuing a degree of some kind. And if you're doing that, then you qualify to live in their housing unit. and it's like a fully furnished apartment. It's awesome. I've done so many campus tours of it. So it's a really, really, really cool program and the goal is for them to break the cycle of poverty by pursuing some kind of education.

6:59So once they graduate the program, they get a job and while they're in the program, they also get counselors. I just love it, okay? So they came to us and they said, hey, our kids are out of school and so we need gas money and we need money because we're feeding them throughout the day now. And they didn't need a ton of money, but they were you know so we want to get each mom a 50 60 gift card if we can so we threw together a mahjong event um and we charged everybody all my friends all everyone's friends and we all got together and played it was great phenomenal we also did a little lesson there was a local place here in austin called two bam fun they came they taught us like it was great and it was so last minute but i was so proud of everybody for just like showing up having fun and playing um yeah i I mean, amazing cause.

7:45And I just think it's really cool. I think it was 12 months ago you said, you know what, I want to start giving back. I feel like that's something that I love to do and I want to do it. And you took action on it. And now you're doing what you said you were going to do. I also love the two girls I do it with, Lexi and Caitlin. We just have our little group texts and we're always planning events. And I'm most excited about the pints and ponytails. You're going to do that? We're going to do it. Oh, my gosh. We're going to do that one big, though. We're going to plan that one more than a week out.

8:16We're going to get all the dads. We're going to charge them. We're going to have mannequins. We're going to have pints. Probably do it at a brewery. We'll have the little mannequin hat, and we'll teach you guys how to do pigtails, braids. It'll be really cute. I'm 10 out of 10 supportive of this on multiple fronts. And what I loved about last night, too, was I needed a lot of help setting up, and you were a very, very, very good co-host. I mean, you weren't the co-host, but you were a great spouse. But you were a really good spouse. This is not about me. I want to introduce a new thing that I do when I drop something on you that we didn't program about in the middle of the episode.

8:53Okay. Okay. Do we have a name for this thing that I do? A drop. A hairy drop. Oh, that's a terrible name. Maybe the second time you do it, we'll have a name for it. Okay. Thank you, Jules. Look at Jules keeping us on the track. You knew Jules' nickname, The Conductor. We could get her a hat. we get a hat and Bubba goes we're on the train what do you think about this 2028 we drop it all we travel for a year 3 months London 3 months Paris I know where you got this 6 months TBD don't say where I got it I thought I found out about it before you nope he told me he told you? when? So yesterday I came home.

9:42I don't want to blow them up on who told us because that's not fair to them. We're not blowing them up. Let's just not say who told us, please. Okay. Someone told you. Someone told us that they wanted to also do this. Yeah. But I did. I'm not going to say who it was, but it was the cutest thing ever because I came home yesterday from working out and this person was just sitting on our couch waiting for you. And you were nowhere to be found. So I sat there and hung out with them for an hour. and that's when they told me about their 2028 plan what do you think about this plan i love it but in 2020 i think we're gonna have like a newborn child okay so what if it's 2029 yeah some year i would love to go live abroad for a year of course but you know i don't love talking about hypotheticals that are very far away it's not my favorite thing to do oh my god imagine like you have a podcast and every week you show up and you you you talk about things you you don't want to talk about the hypothetical things that your partner wants to talk about that's fine do you know what i'd rather talk about let's hear let's discuss okay so if you're listening like subscribe please subscribe how are subscribers doing jules they're doing great okay thank you for subscribing i think you should ask a question that you want people to comment because the the where we've been getting a lot of comments lately is all the people telling us that they don't have kids so i like learning about the audience by asking them questions.

11:06Okay. Oh, I have a question. I have a question. I have a great question. Okay. Okay. We, like 10 out of 10 priority, we need to pick a fence for a house. Okay. It is a big priority. It happens twice a day, Harrison, says the fence. If anyone has fence ideas, is that a good question? It's not the type of community building question I was thinking of. We have a white brick house with a wood front door, but black windows. but we can paint those windows no people will understand what i'm saying it's beautiful i don't want to change our house i do not want to change our black windows i just need the fence to tie it appropriately so do with that what you want the question i want to ask the audience okay is number one it's a two-part question so you can label your your answer one and two number one do you have kids yes or no number two on a scale of one to ten how messy is your car Ours is a 9.5 or a 10.

12:01That's so unfair. But the reason our car is so messy is because we have two kids now. And what Harrison has realized is it used to be somebody would bring in Tate when we had one kid, and then the other person would clean the car. We'd take out the cups. We'd take out the snacks. We'd take out the bags, all of it. Now, since we have two kids, we're each carrying a kid, so everything stays in the car, so our car's just getting messier and messier and messier. Totally agree. Very unexpected. dynamic change the car was in decent to good cleanliness with just one child now it's not a nine to nine and a half messiness it's more like an eight it's actually more like a seven seven yeah thank you because i've seen how so how cars can get yeah yeah i didn't think about that on us well i agree because i've seen what i've seen some cars where when you get three kids and they're all in car seats and you're giving them all snacks i've seen videos of those cars being cleaned, I mean, it can get bad.

12:58I'm sure. We're not there yet because we only have one kid eating in the car. Our problem is we got a lot of cups and a lot of snacks and wrappers that are half eaten. But what she doesn't have in the car is like Cheerios. She doesn't have freestanding. So those aren't thrown everywhere because we gave her packaged snacks. Yeah, but I did find two sticks of cheese yesterday. In the car? Yeah. I think we should just take the car to get detailed. I don't know why we haven't. I totally agree. But it is in the car seat. but you know cars can get like significantly messier than what we're dealing with yes that's why that's why i push back on nine nine and a half yeah summer always makes me rethink what i'm reaching for every day to wear lighter fabrics better materials pieces that just feel good the moment you put them on and they look effortless that's why i keep coming back to quince they focus on high quality essentials think breathable linen soft organic cotton washable silk but without the luxury markup.

15:18Talking about today, bonding with baby number two. That was good. Somebody submitted a question about bonding with Rocky. A deeper dive into the U.S. mat leave. So we had fun doing this yesterday. It's not a fun answer, but we did dive into it. And why your toddler tantrums with mom and dad, but not grandma. And of course, the summer house reunion because we watched it and slash a little bit of like the Knicks game was just so fun to watch because I thought for sure the Spurs were going to win. And then I don't know, it's just a moment. And I I watched West Village. Did anybody see the video of West Village?

15:48No, but he was talking to me about it this morning. That was electric. I didn't realize it was in the West Village. I just thought it was around Madison Square Garden. It's on your friend Justin's story. It's the last slide. It is insane. That would be so fun. It would be, Jules, because people probably weren't out there. I've not been doing social media, so I need to see. Oh, let me show you. So people were obviously not outside because the Spurs were crushing them, and maybe a couple people were. But then, go to Justin. And did he take it? No, he didn't take it. He reposted it. But then, of course, they were closing in by 12, then 9, you know, and then we had a two-point game, and then we had a one-point game, and then we were tied.

16:25And I'm sure the streets just – and what was it, 12.30 their time? Midnight? Holy. Yeah. Wait, turn it to me. I want to see. You got to show Jules. Well, I got to watch, too. We'll insert it. I'll see you later. I'll live in suspense. Okay. Just know it's awesome. it's as many people as you're thinking on the corner by the new rubies I think is where they are I think they're on that corner

16:53I mean it's insane they're all like young that is how Europeans act when it comes to soccer but that is so fun for New York regardless of who you wanted to win that's awesome you want a city to be that into it so

17:10why do we call I don't even know if I want to do this, but maybe we have to do this. Why do we call it football? Don't do this. Why do we call U.S. football football when you don't use your feet? I have no clue. You want to do this? It's a rabbit hole. Okay, I'm down to learn. Why is football called football in America? The sport directly came from rugby football and association football soccer. Hold on, this isn't a good answer. Originally, the term football didn't necessarily refer to kicking a ball with a foot. Rather, it described any ball game played on foot. Oh, so you're running on your feet.

17:57How general. As compared to horseback. You know, like, what is that croquet? What is that? Polo? Yeah. So there you go. Very interesting. Wow. As compared to horseback. Intuitively, you'd think that U.S. football would be called soccer. Yeah. Because what does soccer mean? I don't know. Right? That means nothing. Soccer is a made-up word. That actually makes sense. It's similar to polo, but they're on their feet. Their feet are touching the ground. You're running with your feet, Paul. That's crazy. I did not expect that. I didn't either. But in theory, the sport where you use your feet to kick the ball, you think...

18:38Soccer must have come later. Would be called football. But then at that point... In Europe, it's called... Wait, wait, wait. I know it's called football. Football. But does that mean football? No, it doesn't. Because it's spelled F-U-T. F-O-O-T. Football. No, F-U-T-B-O-L. In Europe, it's football. Get out of here. What? Are you serious? Now are you... I was very well abreast for that conversation. That's not the right word. Prepped. Hold on. It comes directly from the English word football, describing a team sport where players maneuver a ball into the opposing team's net, primarily using their feet.

19:15This is all very confusing. Because that's soccer. Harrison, what? You thought that Europeans... Football's the Spanish spelling. F-U-T-B-O-L.

19:29in the uk what do they call soccer and how do they spell it

19:42in the uk they call it football f-o-o-t-b-a-l-l one word okay yeah in that in spain they say it the spanish way a hundred percent in spain they go f-u-t in the UK they go F-O-O-T. I didn't know that. I didn't think about it. I'm so glad that this just like zinged and zinged right back. That's not a word. Zinged and zagged? Ping ponged. Ping ponged. Ping pong. See, that's a sport name that makes sense. Yeah, that is the most obvious sport name that makes sense. Ping pong. Bing bong. What was that? Was that a trend for a while? Bing bong. why did they do that that was like was that a viral video and what was the video it's the guy in Staten Island yes what do you want to tell half your life what do you want to tell is it Joe Biden what do you want to tell Joe Biden right now

20:46and what does he say does he say bing bong yes it's an insanely great video I watched it like so many times. Obviously, I have muscle memory of it. Okay. Well, that was, I didn't learn anything in that whole conversation. So, soccer, football, ping pong. I learned that football doesn't mean ball with feet. Well, that's true. I did learn that it was in comparison to those on a horse. What do you think the consumer response would be if the name was changed? I just can't believe that we call it that. When it just like inherently doesn't make sense. Remember when Lindsay Hubbard came out at the reunion and was like, I haven't learned anything.

21:26I agreed. I agreed. I agreed with that as well. The timeline. Did you see Jesse posted the timeline, the Summer House timeline? It's his last slide in his most recent post. He literally dates it out. And he's like, I went to happy hour with Amanda. She denied everything. He literally has a full blown timeline. You should go look at it. I think that it's crazy that they're just like, yeah, we were just we were lying. that's their excuse when they bring up the dates they're like well sorry I did lie sorry guys our vows are bad and everyone's like okay and why would we believe you now the series of lies and the gaslighting yeah it's what has made it exponentially worse like I actually think it's like a case study on how you the way in which you handle something has massive effects on the results.

22:22Totally agree. Like you can do the same act and, and handle it two different ways. And I think they, in theory, if they'd owned it, I think there's a world where they could have got out of this carrying their momentum, not carrying their mom. Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, you know what? Maybe, but I, let me, let me, let me run you a scenario here. Okay. Okay. Okay. This is called Scenario Analysis. Love it. Okay, boom. Done. New segment. New segment. We're going to do 25 new segments today. And we have this on film because their whole lives are filmed. Yeah. Let's say that the season ends. She tells Kyle she's moving out.

23:10Okay. And Amanda goes and it's a week after she moves out. Okay. And she sits down with Sierra. And she goes, Sierra, I moved out. I packed my shit. Wes came over. And it dawned on me, like, I think I love this guy. Nothing happened. Didn't know what was a thing. But, like, my perspective on it has changed. And you need to know this.

23:41And I'd love to pursue this. but if I really can't then you let me know and I think if she presented it the right way and put enough pressure on her I think in theory she could have been open to it okay it would be very tough and then you get Sierra's sign off and if you get Sierra's sign off I think everyone's fine with it because at that point no one cared about Kyle correct yeah I guess that could work I just I just it seems like he broke Sierra's heart and she thinks he's such a sociopath. I think she'd be like, OK, like this is the hill you want to. This is your guy. This is who you want to sit me down and ask me about.

24:25I don't know. Like, yeah, I guess in theory, that scenario is fine. That would be better. Yes, that's better. I think that there would have been less drama, but like no one would still be friends. They're all there. Jules is correct. I think I need to take that back. I don't think so. No, it's fine. It's a scenario. I'm just kind of running it out. Let me clarify. That's not what I... Yeah. I just think in that scenario, okay, fine. The reunion's a lot less juicy because nobody... Like, they were speculating. Also, at this reunion, they have two... People bond when there's the obvious villain, right?

25:01Like, there is that kind of, you know, energy in the air. And they're definitely doing that to Wes and Amanda, more so Wes. But I do think if they would have gone about it the right way, this you know we'd be sitting here at the reunion of just like asking them was it worth it why right but the only thing i think is interesting is she did say i'm gonna have a lot to think about and this was filmed what a month and a half ago and we know they went to europe together so i guess she thought about it and but kyle had the best line ever i think it was kyle and that was what you did is you took someone in their most vulnerable space yes after you know a breakup of 10 years and you completely isolated her to the point that like she has no one else and needs you and so while i'm sure she left from that and was thinking what she didn't have anyone else to go to she couldn't call her friends she lost all of her friends she can call kyle but kyle isn't really gonna take that phone call he's gonna take it i think like he'll take it but it felt like halfway take it.

26:08I felt like Kyle's being a very good guy around supporting her and showing her love, but holding his boundary. I agree. I agree. He is. He is holding his boundaries. Kyle is doing a phenomenal job. Amanda like doesn't have a choice but to be in this relationship. And it feels like Wes has this like other life where if this thing eventually like does fall apart, he won't miss a beat because he kind of feels like one of those guys that like has his hand in a bunch of different bunch of different places and we'll just like go ride some momentum parents you know anything that makes life easier on us and the baby is a win and that is why i seriously love magnetic me tate and rocky are both in magnetic me and honestly i'm wearing it too i wore it last night the blue magnetic up it's so easy for breastfeeding the pajamas make it amazing whenever you just pop them open they use magnets instead of snaps or zippers which means getting dressed is quick, easy, and actually fun.

27:07With all these diaper changes day and night, the magnets are a total game changer. They're quick, easy, and they're fuss-free. And on the mornings when we're rushing out the door, magnetic meat genuinely saves us a few precious minutes. Minutes that turn into more cuddles and more of the moments we want to soak in. What I didn't expect, you guys, was how much I would love their adult PJs. I cannot stop talking about them. I wore them with Tate and now with Rocky too. The magnets make breastfeeding so much easier and the fabric is incredibly soft. They're honestly the comfiest pajamas that I own and the most convenient.

Don't wait get 15 % off at magnetic me calm So let me ask you this while Kyle has a good point that Amanda isn't a very vulnerable spot coming out of a 10-year relationship He's talking directly to Wes like you prayed on somebody in their most vulnerable moments is that and I'm asking this is that Wes fault?

28:22the reason why it's Wes's fault is because He had a bunch of insider information like okay Kyle was was and he's supposed to take care of her now in the most intimate way talking about their issues talking about her mental health issues to West to talking about their sex life yeah so like that was crazy you're just bad actor but he do we think that like is what percent is Amanda responsible for her own actions in this is what I'm asking zero or are we going to give her no no no 30 % In this scenario, though, of just this in a vacuum of him saying, you know, you preyed on her in her most vulnerable moment.

29:06That's so hard to say. I think they're both guilty, but they're guilty for different reasons. Yeah. Plain and simple. She was a bad friend. Oh, my God. So I ended up watching the reunion yesterday in like 10 parts on TikTok. The conductor. Someone recording their TV, and I watched it, and I cried, and I had to cut myself off because I hate bad friends. I really I there's nothing I hate more than a bad friend and they did that montage of Sierra like caring for Amanda oh my god putting her hands around her face yeah yeah she was not only a good friend she was a great friend yeah and so it's just yeah they're responsible in different ways and I do agree with you on this Jules I want to say I want to combine a hybrid of what you're both saying like she Sierra was an excellent friend and there is a world where Amanda I guess if you have free will yeah you could have feelings for west you could just you could just do right by your friendship yeah and at least tell her i do think the craziest thing too is like at this point i would expect them to be like well it's reality tv like things aren't that deep but you can tell that they all were actually that close of like that's the craziest part is that you can tell that they are actually close it's what's it's actually what's giving me a lot of respect for the show is they're clearly a real friend me Me as well.

30:27I'm like, oh, I would watch this. To me, the tell of it all was Jesse Sullivan. Yes. When he was just sitting there like weeping, I was like, that's a guy who's - He's sad. Who's sad and whose social friend group has just blown up. Did you see the cut versus the uncut version? No. No. Okay. I don't know what you guys watched on, but in one version, they just say he's sad. He's feeling like he lost a brother. Yeah in another version. That's what we say. He's sad because just that same summer his best friend got with his ex oh And so it was like and he was like and so I can't and then like maybe West helped him through that And he's like I can't imagine being friends with someone who would do that exact same thing that you know Just like killed me this past summer.

31:22Wow West has a lot of information from a lot of different angles that he neglected. Yes. That is a large case and point of it. Did Jesse not also go to West and say I have feelings for Sierra? Yeah. On the season. And he said no? He said you're not allowed to do that? Yeah. That was, yes. I think my prediction is the next, so Sierra had her glow up and is on a phenomenal path. And I think that will continue. you i think that the the new dark horse in in a blow up is jesse he's already in one he's not huge but he's taking it slow and steady and he's doing it the right way thousand instagram followers but he's doing it slow and steady the right way i think that the way in which he's coming off on all this it does the internet agree with that i don't know i i would say largely yeah like to me he's sierra's rising sears like star one um i think kyle's past is gonna limit him too much to actually like even though i think he's absolutely handling this in an incredibly mature way but i think jesse is is jesse's the best positioned outside of sierra to take that that next step forward and oh okay i'll take you one further you know how like we see page to Sorbo and Hannah Burner now?

32:45Yes. Jesse can do that. That's what I was trying to get. Jesse can do the male equivalent of that, which we haven't really seen from a reality star. Like a guy, a male that I can think of. I'm trying to think of one right now. None of the, like Shep, none of them have, none of them have catapulted outside of their show. Have they? A couple. I don't know the Vanderpump crowd. Well, like Vile Files. yes you are correct in that yeah yeah he has he has okay so hopefully jesse and i don't know if it's a singing career i don't know what it is he clearly loves to sing so we'll see um but i'm saying intro i'm saying

33:27persona online persona online persona he could be a host i mean he could do a lot of things like he could be a um like talk show host he's really well spoken he is i thought i thought he did a really good job because we watched yeah when you show that level of raw motion sorry i catch up though no he did he did and he he spoke through it i thought he was really sweet um what was i gonna say jesse oh i think though to your point though i think the the summer house guy crew kyle carl jesse like i think they as a whole though will elevate i agree i i thought even i i don't know the other two guys like kj and the other british guy or australian guy like yeah even what they were saying like i don't know i was all in i'm gonna have to watch the show now they'll i mean jules that ben guy i want to watch the show now too that ben guy getting dunked on oh my god so funny was like that came so out of left field that was that was from two episodes like the blonde lady beside ben okay just like in the thick of all this just like savagely goes after him and it was like yo like chill this ain't about you right this ain't about you no but she had good points okay i'm gonna conduct this okay do you guys know in the time stamps i say if you don't want to hear about reality tv skip this part oh that's the best thing ever for you that's great because i i love that too when i listen the podcast i just want to know where i go but here was my take on this because none of that other things i really thought about before they just came out of my mouth my take on this is the ultimate winner of the situation and who needs to be applauded as bravo oh totally agree master class happened and the reason why is they've updated reality tv for the new age of tiktok and that is historically when these like mega drama events would occur we wouldn't be getting the real time updates and they've updated their model to with this new bonus episode to give us content much more real time and they they need um or i just want to call out that that credit because they're making this way bigger than it otherwise would have been they also clearly went back and re-edited summer house a hundred percent and they put a lot of the spotlight on West and Amanda's interaction.

36:00So they gave us exactly what we wanted there. Social media took it by storm. They did it again the next episode. The best thing they did too is so it's, I don't know if you guys keep watching, but it's the summer house reunion and then you get in the city and what they did in the cities, they brought Amanda back on green screen and asked her questions about, okay, how are you actually feeling in this moment watching it back? I mean, they are doing that. They're making these people work though. Like they're making the reality stars clock in for their job. And they're like, you're going to earn this paycheck.

36:28And I mean, they are giving us what we want. Yeah. I have to move us on from reality TV. Just in general. Okay. To a new segment. Okay. So I love this. Somebody put this in the questions or in the comments. Would you be up for covering what it was like bonding with Rocky? You mentioned something about being nervous your heart wouldn't grow. How did it all feel? Was it instantaneous over time? Would love to hear more about it all. So when you have, so basically the question is when you have a second baby, how does it feel? And do you love them as much in your heart as your first baby? And everyone will tell you, yes, they will tell you your heart does not divide.

37:04It expands. And I have to say now having a second baby, the most true thing in the world. And it just, it took care of itself. Like you meet that baby, they come out and you hold them and it just boom instantaneously. you love it so much and you have you have 100 love for your first child and you think am i gonna have 90 and give some to this baby no now you just have two that have 100 of your love it's the coolest thing in the world there's no other way to say it yeah and you just find new ways to bond with your new child and they are happening on such a different level and with tate right now that bonding is occurring through exploration and through discovery versus with Rocky that bonding is happening through survival.

37:52Yeah. Yeah, he needs, yeah. And warmth. Yeah. And being on your stomach every morning. And just the cuddles. But it is, it's two cups full, it's two full cups. It's the coolest thing, it's the coolest feeling in the world. But yeah, so to your question, how did it all feel? Incredible. Is it instantaneous? Yes. and it's indescribable almost indescribable but truly unbelievable everyone i know is talking about glp1s and i totally get why people are curious but then you read the fine print and you find out there's the needles the side effects that may cause nausea vomiting and existential dread disclaimers and a lot of people are like there has to be a better way and there is you guys meet veracity veracity's metabolism ignite is 100 natural drug-free clinically proven glp1 alternative and the number one doctor recommended glp1 booster just two capsules with breakfast and people are reporting feeling energized and focused all day with cravings way down no injections no pharmacy runs no scary warning labels it's made from plant-based ingredients lemon verbena hibiscus green coffee bean extract and magnesium.

39:05And clinical trials showed an 85 % reduction in hunger and an average of nine pounds lost in 90 days. And since it's 100 % natural and caffeine-free, there's zero negative side effects. It was created by Allie Egan, a certified hormonal health coach who experienced her own metabolic struggles and decided to build something better, a natural option that actually works. So before metabolism ignites sells out again, make the switch to GLP ones the natural way head to veracityhealth.co and use code two parents for up to 65 % off your order once again that's v-e-r-a-c-i-t-y health.co for up to 65 % off and make sure you use my promo code two parents so they know I sent you um okay let's go to maternity leave so you guys last episode we just like touched lightly on maternity leave and how messed up it was um and how little it can be what's interesting is the united states has as a as a country we have no paid maternity leave so it has it falls to the states to mandate it correct correct is that from everyone's understanding here's my stat that i want to start the combo with okay please from here we're going to take it and run 100 years ago um so 1926 you know what happened what was the what was the maternity leave policy nothing okay and a lot of times when women got pregnant then they quit their jobs if they had jobs can i tell you something new i learned though yes before um so in 1919 so seven years before 100 years ago the um what was it called the international labor organization issued maternity protection convention where 37 out of 38 nations adopted some version of this 14 weeks of leave at two-thirds pay okay and the one industrialized nation to hold out was the u.s why in 1919 so since 1919 other countries have had some form of of semi-paid maternity leave and and the u.s is still the holdout which i just think we didn't know that yesterday when we we did not know that so what's so crazy you guys is in 1926 okay no paid leave for women 100 years later the U.S.

41:29still has no paid leave for women now a lot of the states will mandate it or the companies will do it but as a country like we do not mandate paid maternity leave for women that that's that is so mind-blowing and I didn't even know that it's crazy and so you think about it. You think about, okay, some companies do unpaid, but your job is secure. So you get, you know, you get four weeks off or four months off, let's call it. And so at the end of those four months, you still have your job. Yay. You still have your job. I guess that's, we're celebrating that. All while like you have to buy formula or you have to buy a car seat.

42:12Your expenses go up but you just you're not paid do you want me to share some of the other things i learned yes one in four american moms returned to work within two weeks after giving birth 75 of them citing financial need well um women without paid leave are far more likely to drop out of the workforce permanently and women who do take paid leave are 93 % more likely to be in the workforce nine to 12 months later. So like, what was this stat? Women who do take paid leave are 93 % more likely to still be in the workforce nine to 12 months after returning from leave. Yeah. Do you want to go? Do you want me to go?

43:00I'm just going back to work two weeks later after having a baby and then siding for financial reasons makes all the sense in the world. Of course, a lot of people would need to go back to work to make money. Two weeks after you've had a baby, number one, there's the physical aspect of it where with Tate, I wasn't fully able to walk still because I had a third degree tear and then my stitches fell out. That could happen to you. Then there's the hormones. you know your hormones are all over the place what we've also learned is you learn you you lose five percent of gray matter which we saw yesterday is the equivalent of aging 30 years that's that is the best way to describe what happens to your memory when you have a baby you'll be in the middle of a sentence and you'll just be like i don't know what i was talking about or i can't remember her name can you tell me her name again and then do you know the number one thing I'm thinking about for these women going back to work after two weeks?

44:03How sleep deprived are you? Because at two weeks, they're not, they're not sleeping. A lot of them aren't sleeping four hour stretches. I mean, you're up every three hours and you're not up just, I think people think you feed the bottle and you go back to bed. You don't. You feed the bottle, you burp, you change the diaper. Then you got to hope they go back to bed. So a lot of times you're up for an hour. And by the time you're up for an hour, you're then awake. So these women, they're not sleeping. their hormones are everywhere and physically they're hurt yeah and they're of course they're going back to work because they had no paid leave yeah it's it's it's wild and two things or three things come to mind here the first is like you talked about that all of the current maternity leave funding comes from the state government and not the federal government correct and this One of the great things about this country is this country is always trying to improve, and this feels like something that if someone were to run behind this as a big part of their campaign, I think it would really land and really resonate.

45:09And then you could draw material change, whether that is change happening at the state level or the federal level. Obviously, like these things take time and they're easier said than done. But I think a really important part of it is just is the awareness and that then gets it on the radar. So that way, when someone does run, they recognize, hey, like this is really important. And if I communicate my intent to drive change around this matter, it can happen. And like you, there's so many countries that do do this. you know Sweden is one that that does 35 weeks and the list goes on and on so it's not like as you alluded to like this isn't something that isn't done a lot of developed most developed countries have a mandated policy that's paid we just don't the second and this is something I just like didn't obviously just like wasn't on my radar at all beforehand but I think something really important for people to do if they're in the position to do is like when you look for a job asking that question totally on to the company because there are companies that go above and beyond and it feels like when you look at who's doing it the best so netflix is up to a year google i think is 35 weeks but the two kind of themes i saw are tech companies like random ones you probably haven't heard of, like Atlassian.

46:43These tech companies seem to have really, really good Matt Lee policies. And interesting enough, banks and finance companies like American Express, JPMorgan Chase have really good policies. Most importantly, Matt. And I think that there's just more positive outcomes that come from having good Matt Lee policies as a company that I think would be relevant like at the country level as well. There's like actual economic benefits to giving women paid leave because of the benefits that... Women bring in the workforce. Women bring in the workforce. For sure, especially when you tie it back to the statistic that you shared earlier around women who are given paid mat leave are 94 % more likely to return to the workplace versus the contrary.

47:38Right. I think the important thing here is rather than just like, you know, obviously identifying the problem, but then driving attention to how you can change it. And this can change both at the state and federal level. Well, I know because we were looking it up, like some of the states that have not implemented paid mat leave, correct? Correct. So then the people in those states just get the like 12 weeks of fmla unpaid yeah which the other thing that i don't know if you guys know but like fmla isn't just for um women who had a baby it's for like if you have a serious illness if you have to take care of a family member if you have like any number of things right and i think i was looking it up only 40 of women of working women in the u.s even qualify for fmla to begin with because of like where they work how many hours they work a week whatever so yeah so essentially 40 percent of women in those states have have those 12 weeks well and they're unpaid and they're unpaid it's really crazy it's it's really really really crazy so here's my question because we can talk about this all day right what do we do about it who do you what did bobby i saw bobby was at the capital and they had the bobby jackets, but what were they lobbying for?

48:58For federally mandated parental leave. Was it Matt leave? Parental leave, yeah. Okay, so maybe we talk to them about how we can get involved with that. Maybe that's actually probably our quickest or fastest direct to. And my understanding on the way that inherently works and happens is like you have a senator who as they're running makes it a big part of their campaign. slam dunk you'd get all the women and then they go and and once elected fight to pass it through i don't even i would i would hope you wouldn't have to fight to pass it through but yeah and i but correct though the reality is getting like yes you can run on it and you can campaign on it right but that doesn't mean that when you're actually elected you do you'll get that budget yeah totally i was just gonna add like my understanding is that like a lot of people are for this it's just that it's like where does the money come from is is the question and and everyone agrees there's everyone thinks it comes from a different place and that's what's getting this held up like people have tried and ultimately comes down to like where the money's coming from that's blocking any sort of federally mandated thing from being um so i do just want to so mcdonald's has 12 weeks paid for for birth parents um but that's after one year of working there that you qualify but that's three months but there's and it's paid an important delineation here what i've noticed with some corporations okay there's a difference between salaried workers and hourly workers oh you mean that these people are and so where it gets even worse so you're saying these people are at mcdonald's corporate i'm not sure but it's worth the double check Because back to Julie's point on one in four women going back in two weeks and going back driven by financial reasons, unfortunately, I think an outsized amount of those are going to be hourly workers who aren't being protected when that's inherently who needs it most.

50:56Correct, Harrison. Yeah, like McDonald's doesn't because over 90 % of locations are franchised and independently owned and therefore the policies are set by the individual owners. Okay, McDonald's has to absolutely get better at that. Can McDonald's mandate it from a corporate level that if you own a franchise, you must implement their mat leave policy? I'd assume so. Yeah, I don't know, but they can implement other rules and regulations. And even if it's not fully implemented, I assume that if that's the guidance given, that would go a very long way. And because, one, if that's what they're doing in their stores, you lead by example.

51:36and then you don't want to be the outlier franchise that doesn't do it. Right. Starbucks was different though because they were referencing their baristas. So Starbucks says 18 weeks paid for birth parents and a lot of it that when I was reading it, it did say that that will cover like even a part-time 20-hour-a-week barista. So that's awesome. That's phenomenal. But I didn't, and don't quote me on that, but I did not think about how when you Google what some of these policies are, so those are at the corporate level, not the hourly level, who you're correct is who needs it the most. damn, we got a long way to go on this.

52:09What I would be curious to hear though is in the comments, people's, what their maternity leave was or if they got pregnant and did not go back to work, which I fully would understand. Or if there's any way that you, you have found if this has gotten, if this has come across your desk that you've done something about it. I'm interested to hear like mat leave experiences both on the positive and negative side. Okay. So that's our, That's our mat leave. That's where we're at right now. But we're going to, we'll continue to keep you updated. But we'll reach out to the Bobby people. Now let's go to the things we learned.

52:45What did you learn this week, Alex? Well, and I talked to you about this. What I learned this week is mom and dad get the tantrums and we get the meltdowns. But the teachers get the good behavior, right? Sometimes. Yes. Or the grandparents get the good behavior, okay? And so the question is like, why do I then get you tantruming? And it's like the second I walk in the door, it's just like, ah, and it's actually a compliment. It's because the kids finally feel so safe. So all day they've been swallowing the tears and they've been on their best behavior. But then mom and dad get there and they can finally exhale and they feel safe and they unload all of their emotion at once.

53:23And it actually said the more emotional, the more tantrum-y they are, the more they need the hug in that time. and somebody commented which I thought was so smart which is it's like crying in front of your boss versus your best friend it's fascinating I think my question is like at what age does this dynamic start to exist because I feel like at this point that doesn't really happen no I would think four five six yeah probably because like while in theory this makes sense like in reality I think that we get the opposite right now where tate's on her best behavior with us and when she's with someone else is um yeah my mom sent the clip that you posted to my cousin because my cousin's dealing with this right now and her baby's like the same age as tate like maybe a six months older or something but like she's good all day in daycare and the second my cousin goes to pick her up she's just sobbing i think we i think we see it a little like with with Maria the girls are really really good and they're a lot like looser and sillier and funnier and I think I think we see it a little but not I don't think we're quite there yet yeah I think it could I don't know I'm speaking just from that but like I think that could happen as early as early can be yeah but I do think it's like very prevalent in the three, four, five, that range.

54:55It's a really interesting behavioral dynamic that I'm going to be a lot more attentive to, but I just, as you say it, and I look at our lived experience, I don't really see it. But it goes to say big meltdowns. They need comfort, they need regulation, and they need connection. And it's like they need you. They see you and they just exhale and they're like i can let it all out now i'm safe i'm with my mom and dad it's really cute although in the moment it feels so overwhelming i'm sure yeah but it's a very sweet dynamic so parenting really changes you one day you're having a normal conversation with adults and the next you're asking did you wipe good enough at least five times a day before noon you guys nobody warned you about the emotional damage of teaching a kid to wipe properly but here we are and that's why parents are gonna love little dude wipes from dude wipes.

55:51They're flushable kid wipes made for potty training and everyday cleanup and the fragrance-free version just launched at Target. They're made for kids big and small who are learning better bathroom habits. They're made with 99 % water and their plant-based ingredients. They're hypoallergenic for sensitive skin and they help kids get way cleaner, fresher wipe than the dry toilet paper alone. Because let's be honest, wetter cleans better they're also plastic free and flushable which yes that matters flushable is the biggest game changer here to me once you try them you'll get it they're one of those things that just makes your day a little bit easier and as a parent that's everything so join the over four billion butts that wipe with dude wipes every year grab little dude wipes now at target in the toddler and potty training aisle um okay tweet of the week h which one do you want to do Why don't you pick one?

56:46Recently overheard this. Everything is a win when the goal is experience and my brain chemistry is forever changed. Phenomenal tweet. What lands so much about this tweet to me is when you're going through hardships in the moment, it feels like you have Mount Everest in front of you. But every time I look back on my hardships, 6, 12, 18 months after the fact, I see how much they contributed to my growth as a person. So yeah, I think that taking the approach of both the good and bad experiences you go through in life are a massive contributor to you becoming the person that you inherently want to be is a pretty powerful outlook.

57:40Yeah, I think that is and it takes a second to rewire your brain to think like the goal was just experience I didn't go the way I wanted. Yeah, but the goal was experience and and that's what you got And I think you even feel that as a parent like you go through these experiences over the first You know three six nine twelve months of a kid obviously many more ahead But then when you have baby two you just feel so much more position better position because You've had those a lot of those experiences already. Yeah, no, no No question. Okay, the second one I'm going to read as well. I like this one too.

58:14Your current life is, to an uncomfortable degree, an honest readout of who you've been. Yeah, and obviously on one end of this, a lot of where you are today is a circumstance of the situation you were born into. And so that can't be overlooked. but I also think it's very important that we're very honest with ourselves on how much have we contributed to where we, where we sit today, um, both in a good way and both in, in a bad way and owning our wins and owning our losses and, and, uh, and our setbacks. Well, I'm saying too, if I don't like where I'm at, what do I, what am I going to do about it?

59:01Yeah. Yeah. And, and, And I think a very powerful realization and mindset is like there ain't no one coming to save you. You got to save yourself. That's the most true thing. That would be on like if somebody asked me like top 10 things you've learned in your life, that would be on the top five. Yeah. It's you. Yeah. At the end of the day, it's so fun. Well, I hope you know I'm there for you. Well, I do know you're there for me. But at the end of the day, like who is responsible? Well, I used to say something to you. I used to say, don't let me do X. I don't know. Don't let me stay up late and scroll or something.

59:43Okay. At the end of the day, I have to put my phone up. Yeah. It can't fall on you. Yeah. You know, and you asked me one time, you're like, hold me accountable to my workouts. Okay. Well, if we get to Friday and you haven't worked out once. I got to push back on this. Okay. I think that it's very reasonable to have an expectation of support. Of course it is. But at the end of the day, who are you going to be mad at if you haven't worked out once? Yes. Me or you? Sorry. You're right. You nailed it. I think that it's important that you have support and you're encouraged. But yes, it is. If I don't work out at the end of the day, it is my fault.

1:00:23And I need to own that. and it is a loser's mindset if I were to come back to you and say, I'm mad at you because I didn't work out and I told you to remind me. That's a loser's mindset. Yeah. Well. If we get to Friday, you cannot. You totally nailed it. You can't say, I didn't work out once a week. I told you to remind me. Ultimately, it's you. On the topic of working out. Are you doing a high rocks? You're doing three. No, the most embarrassing thing yesterday happened though. What? We ran into one of Alex's friends and I was wearing a high rock shirt. We were just on a walk. She was like, do you do high rocks?

1:01:03And like my brain short circuited and I was like, did she just ask me if I just did a high rocks? And I was like, no, like I'm out for a walk with Alex. I didn't just do one. And you could just like tell, I was like, I'm just an idiot. Oh, yeah, it was very embarrassing. I have to texture. My brain totally short-circuited. No, I'm trying to be a good podcast partner. What did you want to talk about? What came up at Maj yesterday? What? Men working out. Oh! Yes, we were laughing. It's so funny how when women get pregnant or whenever we're postpartum, what we all have in common last night talking was, our husbands love to get in like the best shape of their lives.

1:01:53Like they're like, Oh, you know what? I'm going to train for a marathon or, Oh, you know what? I'm going to do a high rocks. And we're like, Oh, read the room. Like right now you are, I need to defend this. Okay. Okay. For me to be the best version of myself, I need to be in good physical shape. Do you need to take it to the extreme of a marathon or a high rocks? Cause like we can't do that no but that's just an accountability thing right that's just like hold like i didn't do the high rocks to win a race no i have to push back on your pushback so you're telling me no no it you guys take it to a new extreme it's great for you to live somewhere in the middle and be in in regular good shape and eat well you can do all of that but we're saying you guys are over and i mean it's like you guys go get an abnormally good shape for yourselves you take it to a new extreme And that to me is like hard to measure.

1:02:48But no, I think it's a really like because when I look at the past year and things I've done well and things I haven't done well, one thing I've done well is I think I got myself in a great position to support the family. OK. I agree. And to be there for the family. Yes. And to prioritize the family. Correct. And I think that part of what allowed me to do that and be so focused is the mental clarity I have. And I think that mental clarity is very highly tied to your physical shape. But do you need to take it so far? It's almost like, oh, you're like over there trimming up. I don't think I'm in that great shape.

1:03:28So that's where it's like. You trained for a hyrox and did one. Yeah, I think for me that was working out five days a week. And that was really important. And I. If you're saying that it puts you in a good spot to take care of the family, I guess that's one point. We were more so laughing being like, it is ironic that every time we're pregnant or postpartum, all of our husbands are like, and I'm going to do a marathon. Did you feel taken care of throughout the pregnancy process? Yes, but I also felt like, oh, good for you. You're going to go do sprints and kettlebells today. I'm going to lay here.

1:04:02I just thought it was funny that we all had that in common where our husbands were getting in really good shape. And maybe you weren't even getting in really good shape. Maybe just in comparison to us not. You were doing the work. yeah we were making the babies um okay I think that we have done it you guys that's that's today's episode we love you all thank you for listening and we will see you on Monday when we start doing three episodes and launch a substack so it's a big week next week thank you for listening thanks for listening to another episode of two parents in a podcast powered by just media house if you enjoyed the show don't forget to like subscribe comment rate and review stay connected on instagram tiktok youtube and facebook at two parents and a pod Welcome to our home, Sorry It's So Messy.

From the publisher

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, we go DEEP on the US maternity leave problem (did you know in 1919, 37 out of 38 industrialized nations adopted 14 weeks of paid leave… and the US was the ONE that held out?! And 100 years later, 1 in 4 American moms will go back to work within 2 weeks of giving birth?!). We learned SO much prepping for this episode & we're excited to figure out what we can do about this.

Before we get into that, we start with Harrison's potentially fake World Cup jersey from an Instagram ad (also the CRAZY way he brought up this topic), Alex's mahjong charity event for the Jeremiah Program, and a new idea we’re floating: living abroad for a year in 2028?! (Alex is NOT here for hypotheticals). Plus, the #1 unexpected change going from 1 to 2 kids (the CAR is officially a 9 out of 10 in messiness) and the listener Q we've been thinking about all week: how does your heart grow for baby #2?! 🥹

SPORTS! We talk about the Knicks game (the West Village was crazy??) and go down an actual rabbit hole on why we call it football?! (a question we didn't know we needed an answer to). Which somehow brought us to the Summer House reunion (Bravo is having an absolute MASTERCLASS moment with this rollout).

Finally we get into our maternity leave deep dive, the toddler tantrum dynamic everyone's been DMing us about (why do they meltdown with mom & dad but be ANGELS with teachers/grandparents?!), TWO Tweets of the Week that are living rent-free in our brains, and the great postpartum husband mystery - why do they all get in the BEST shape of their lives while their wives are pregnant?!

LOVE YOU GUYS!
