In short

The hosts celebrate their daughter Tate’s second birthday with an “over-the-top” party, then discuss discipline vs progress, social etiquette (showing up to friends’ birthdays and weddings), potty training and a new nanny-share for their son Rocky, plus pop culture/current events (Warren Buffett stepping down) and a dog-ownership “brain age”/stress study. They also debate iced coffee and share “big news” about signing with Dear Media.

Guest backgrounds

No guests appear in this episode. The hosts are Alex and Harrison, with producer/editor Jules (mentioned as the producer).

Key claims

Their party stress stayed low because they set the fun vibe; ponies were the biggest hit because they’re kid-height and less intimidating than big horses. They argue discipline prevents “every year looks the same.” They claim pet ownership is linked to reduced brain age (up to 15 years) and correlated cortisol stress between owners and dogs.

Notable examples

Tate’s birthday at County Line on Lake Love; “pub pony” glittered, braided, tinsel-haired ponies; Rocky joining a nanny share; Warren Buffett’s Berkshire returns vs S&P 500; Princess Diana’s brother Charles Spencer’s upcoming book Swan Song: Diana My Sister (Sept 22).

0:01Fall never arrives all at once. First the air, then the light, and slowly the things you love begin to find each other. A jacket meets a dress, a hoodie slips beneath a blazer, an old cap finds a new scarf. Because you don't simply step into the season, you create it layer by layer until it finally feels like fall. Find fall your way at Ross.

0:31The Crispy Chicken Crunchwrap Slider is back at Taco Bell. The slider-sized crunchwrap with nuggets inside you loved the first time, now with a spicy kick you're gonna love this time. Hidden Valley Diablo Ranch. Or you could order some crispy all-white meat nuggets on their own. Pretty sure you love those anytime. Every time. Okay, all of the times. The following podcast is a Dear Media production. Okay.

1:06Jules:Welcome back to another episode of Two Parents and a Podcast. So, did you guys hear the jingle? I heard it. Before this, the following, is that how she says it? The following is a Dear Media production. That's us. Ladies and gentlemen, officially a Dear Media production. two parents and a podcast you have a good voice mimic thank you thank you good voice mimic congratulations congratulations to you i was um i i can't replicate other people's voices the following is a dear media yeah that was pretty good huh the following is a dear media production everything i do sorry everything i do uh i think like just sounds british okay like i've One, yeah.

1:53Well, let's hear the British.

1:54Jules:No, I will not embarrass myself this early on. The following is Dear Media. Especially if there's some new listeners here. No, no, no. So, okay, well, let's - As Bubber would say. No, no, no. No, no, Dada. Bubber is our daughter. Because we might have some new listeners here. So if you're here, let me just start this. Hold on. Let me gather my thoughts. Okay. Ladies and gentlemen, yes, we are now a Dear Media production. We're so excited about that. this has been in the works behind the scenes for a couple of weeks, a couple of months. We have no concept of time, so we don't really know, but you know, give or take anywhere between two weeks and two years.

2:34Jules:Since like April, since around April. What we did was, so we, the, I guess to jump in and to be very, very clear off the top, the front end of the podcast doesn't change. No, everything's the same for you guys. Besides the jingle. besides the jingle there'll be no change to the to the listener experience no we're still gonna we are still gonna produce the same p is still our producer she's well i think jules is our producer he is our editor anyways jules and p me and harrison we're all still here doing our job and the back end of things don't change the back end changes and it feels like a really good home You're really excited about it.

3:20Jules:We're really, really excited about it. So yeah, this is now a Dear Media production. If you're here from Dear Media. Hi, my name's Alex. This is my husband, Harrison. We have two children, Tate and Rocky. We call Tate Bubber. We call Rocky Rocketman. Oh, Tate. I was not your husband when this started. No. So Harrison and I did things a bit untraditional, if you will. We had Tate first. first then we got married three days before rocky came and then we had rocky and we're going to get married eventually so you're actually going to be here with us through our wedding planning we're probably going to get married next year but you are currently married oh yeah we are married currently married we haven't had the wedding yet and then uh do you also clarify happily together from that moment to from the moment of meeting until until today yeah we fell in love the day that we met.

4:12Should we do another recap episode or we can link the one that we did? We can link the OG one. Okay. Love it. Also, someone in the comments called me the other day. Your guys is third wheel. So. And I forgot to bring it up to you. That is like people are so good. People are the best.

4:31Jules:That's the best thing ever. That's me. That's why I'm here. Oh, yeah. We got to introduce Jules. Hi. Oh, my gosh. Okay. So that voice, if you're listening or if you're on, where do we do video? Spotify, YouTube. Spotify and YouTube. Maybe we can do, oh my gosh. I got to talk to Dear Media because maybe they have access to Apple video. I was just, yes. That would be cool. Yeah. I would love to get Apple video. Huh. Okay. This is Jules over here. Hello. She's our producer. She, her mom's name is Nori. We talk about her a lot. Jules has a dog named Jenny. Okay. Just some added color of the characters.

5:10That's apparently reducing Jules's brain age by 15 years, according to study that we're going to talk about today.

5:15Jules:So we're going to get into that. So on that note, what are some things we discuss on this podcast? Family life. We do a lot of like IRL off the top. IRL means in real life. Things that are happening. We had our daughter's second birthday. So we're going to discuss all that. We also love to talk about business, what's happening in the world, what's happening online. So we'll do some pop culture. We'll do some AI. We'll do some banks. By that, I mean investing. Like Warren Buffett retiring, that's on the docket. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Let's get into a regular episode now, beginning with the Totski's second birthday.

5:48Jules:We had our daughter's second birthday this weekend. And how would you grade it? Actually, a 10. I would, too. Jules? I thought it was a 10 out of 10 as well. P had a bachelorette party. That's why we're not asking her. She wasn't not. but he did give Tate her first pair of ballet slippers and a little tutu like what do you call that a leotard with a little tutu on it so this morning Maria put her in the leotard and I came downstairs and she was eating and she was like mama look mama look and I was like look at what and I looked over and I was like your outfit and she did a little twirl for me it's really cute really really cute and she started singing she started singing let it she goes like this let go let go hold hold more can't hold me back anymore she can't get all the words you're seeing every week like more words get added to um wait so now she's got twinkle twinkle a little star.

6:53Jules:How I want... Wait. How are... That's what she's got. It's so cute. We laid in bed this morning for 30 minutes and we sang. Alex does a good Tate impression. Speaking of impressions. Thank you. You do a very, very good Tate impression. Happy birthday. Happy birthday. She hugged everyone. Jules, Tate likes you. Twice. Twice at the party reached for me. Tate was like very interested in Jules at the party. Big developments on our front. Huge development. Did you see it? I saw one. I was holding her and she was like. I didn't see any of them, but I did see that she hugged most of the people as they came in, which I thought was.

7:33No, no.

7:34Jules:She only hugged me as I came in. Exactly. Only Jules. She was like, Jules is here. But back to the party. I, you know, I've taken comfort and now we are the parents to throw the over the top children's birthday parties. those parents that i judged on in such a grand way when i did not have a kid i was definitely a judger like when i would look online and see like parents doing like a big bash for their kids for a second or third birthday like what what are you doing now i get it they're just really fun they're fun for the parents they're fun for the kids most importantly like the child who's having the birthday has a blast yeah and you're my favorite part of throwing events with you because i feel like we kind of do three to three events a year two i would say well we did the labor i'm just thinking about this year this year we'll do the labor day barbecue sorry the memorial day barbecue yep the uh bubber's birthday and then we'll do something christmas yep so we'll do three this year is i feel like normally if someone's like hosting you know 50 to 100 people stress levels just get super high and stress levels in our household are unfazed like leading up to the party and day of the party so it allows you to just like enjoy it and have fun because i don't care like if if the like lat okay so last year for example um harrison you were like okay what if we're not set up in time i was like then we're not set up in time then we're blowing up the bounce house when people arrive yeah like whatever because i don't want it i don't want to set the vibe i don't want it to be so tense around her birthday i want it to be only fun and we get to set the tone of that yeah but i i think that there's just like easier said than done but then i think if i'm really stressed about her birthday then you and i next year are going to opt out of it like we're not going to want to do it yeah you said you said you said a great energy um so i think a couple big ones one i'm so we we did it at the county line uh county line on lake love them which is where we did her first birthday and i'm so glad we ran it back there because now we know them now we know them and i feel like that's just going to be where her birthday is yeah uh great food unbelievable venue set up people were like what on earth this is amazing it's on the lake indoor outdoor uh and i think the best part of the outdoor component is it's completely covered by by the trees.

10:02Jules:Oh yeah. So like even though it was a hot day it wasn't hot. And it is on the lake but we did get a lifeguard. Emma who I adored. She might do our swim lessons. She was precious. I was just hoping she'd show up. And... Because she didn't take a deposit. So I was like please please come because you know people if you pay somebody half a deposit then they come. But if you don't pay them then they're a little less incentivized to get there. She didn't take a deposit so I was hoping she came right on time. What do you think the biggest hit of the party was? The ponies. The ponies. It's called the pub pony, okay?

10:35Jules:Kudos to these girls. So I just get an influx of TikTok comments, and then I started getting an influx of Instagram and then DMs. It was this girl being like, can I bring my ponies to the birthday? You need the ponies at the birthday. If you're new and Harrison just got up to get coffee, this is a regular occurrence. Sometimes he does get up. so so i go and i click on this instagram page and it is they're the most beautiful ponies ever they had put they really truly painted their hooves with glitter they had braided their hair they had put little bandanas and rhinestones in their tails and they tinseled their hair that's what it is they tinseled their hair and this girl like she is so obsessed not obsessed but like she takes such pride in her ponies and they're so well kept they live such happy lives they were so sweet they were so well trained it was precious and i was a little worried that tate and the kids might not love ponies because we had we had seen a horse in georgia and tate like she loves the idea of horses but she's a little afraid of horses because they're so big well she loves horses in books and in movies well and in person they can be and at her farm that we play with oh toys yeah Yeah, she loves horsey toys.

11:55Jules:She loves horsey balloons. But when we see a real horsey, they're really big. But these ponies, the kids loved because they were their height. Yeah. These ponies got swarmed. Yeah. So you did a phenomenal job on the birthday. I just want everyone to have fun. I want the vibe to be that anybody can come. Anybody can have fun. You're fed. You can have your drinks. You can play. You can do some. Yeah, I just want it to be a fun vibe. And that's what it was. This episode is brought to you by Merit Beauty. Everyone says January is the fresh start, but ask any mom and she'll tell you the real new year starts in September.

13:52Jules:It's really an accessory. Free with your first order at MeritBeauty.com. That's M-E-R-I-T Beauty.com. MeritBeauty.com. Have you seen what people are saying Rocky's first birthday theme needs to be? What? Rocky's first rodeo. Not Rocky Man? I mean, that's just a very, very good debate. I don't have a view on it yet Love Rocky's first rodeo Does Rocky get a southern theme Or does we go space for Rocky I wanted to go Elton John Or Elton John For Rocky Man I think that Rocky's personality is very rodeo You have a blonde hair I think it's very rodeo As you can tell this isn't a podcast That really doesn't get any edits So for the listener

14:42So my big question on it, though, is are we going to do it at the county line? Can we do the same venue for both? In theory, I'd love to because I love the venue. I don't think we can do the same venue for both. I think they need to be a little more different.

14:55Jules:Oh, wait, hold on. So they want me to do Rocky's first rodeo. Yeah. Isn't – why? Because his name's Rocky? I think the double R's, yeah. Double R's. And they like the western – Southern theme that you got going on. One thing I could get behind. Do you know how ranches, they make like emblems and they, you know, you go to a ranch and they have their logo. Mm-hmm. Rocky's Ranch, I can get behind and do the two R's. It could be like the double R Ranch. I could do that. That I'm into. Okay. And we could have some double R Ranch cups. But what about venue? I think you could do it like this is just, this is your guys' venue.

15:33This is our birthday venue. It's so easy. The food's really good. The staff is incredible. The salve is so nice. Tons of space. There's no reason not to.

15:43Jules:I'm with you. And every time the surprise is the decor and then now I'm very obsessed with like one thing coming. Like I love the ponies coming. We could do the ponies for Rocky. They could just be different. Yeah. Like the same. No. It would still be the pub pony. But they could do different tinsel or something. Yeah. Yeah. We could do some roping. Oh. We could do some roping practice for Rocky. Or we could go space. We could just completely do something different and do space. A space thing. He doesn't give me space vibes. I know I'm unsoul, but he gives me rodeo vibes. Yeah. All right. Well, we'll see.

16:30Because he's tough. But I guess astronauts are really tough, too. Totally. The one thing that, so I had told my mom that I was going to Tate's birthday party. And she kept asking me all day, why aren't you there yet? Why aren't you there yet? I said, it's not till 4 p.m. And she's like, 4 p.m. for a two-year-old's birthday party?

16:47Jules:The best time to have a two-year-old's birthday party, in my opinion, is the 5 to 7. And we went to 4. We bumped it up to 4 because we wanted to have longer. But I do understand. Okay, so when you're - Yeah, 5 to 7 is long enough. 4 to 7. 4 to 7. 4 to 7. But when you're dealing with nap times, like Tate's two, she's got friends that are younger than her and older than her. And so you're dealing with all these different nap schedules. So you have two time slots, basically. You've got the morning and then you've got the afternoon or the evening. And I like the evening slot a little bit better because in the morning, it's like you're kind of rolling in on one wheel.

17:21Jules:Like it took everything in you to get out the door. You got a whole bunch of stuff the rest of the day. You have to go home for nap time. I love an afternoon slot because I think the adults have fun and the kids have fun. Yeah, I also think there's a lot more to do with the kids in the morning. I feel like activities in the morning come a lot more natural. I'll like wake up and go and walk for breakfast. The park, it's not as hot. Yeah. Versus in the afternoon, that's where like I don't find we have a dead zone in the morning. And I find that we often have a dead zone in the afternoon to kind of say what you just said.

17:52Jules:The most common thing we talk to parents about like is what are you doing from five to seven? And it's like have the birthday party. so then everyone can run around and play together. Yeah. And like you don't, as a parent, you don't want to, you know, having a drink at 11 a.m., not to move, but like nice little. It was a Saturday. Nice little happy hour cocktail, five to seven. Perfect. Four to seven, four to seven. Jules, were you surprised to see me drinking? No. Why? Why? At the end, I was just like, you're just drinking. Did you think that or no? Yes. Yeah. I wasn't surprised. But you took note of it.

18:31I took note of it, yeah. I was talking to a friend about this. So my drinking now is all largely very pre-planned.

18:38Jules:Yeah, we both do that. And so I get really excited about the days. It's like, oh, that's a day in activity that I'd like to drink. And I mentally make note of it. And then I get really excited about it. Yeah. And then I'll have certain days that I call them where I make game time decisions. Well, we don't make very many game time. And I feel like our game time decision now is no. Like on Thursday, we had our families and the neighbors over for Tate's real birthday. And they had Margs and Harrison. I was like, no. No. But like Alex. So Alex is coming in for the Ole Miss game October 25th. Go. Hotty toddy.

19:18Jules:Hotty toddy. Boilers up. That's Purdue. That's my new one. Boilers up for Jade. For Jade. She's like, nobody's ever boilering up. But I'm like, I'm boilers up for you, Jade. That's not fair. Why is nobody loving on Purdue? Because it's hard to love Purdue football. But what I talked about on Saturday is come basketball time, I'm fully down to support them in March Madness. This is a Purdue podcast. I just want to let everyone that went to Purdue know we welcome you. We love you. Lost my train of thought. Where were we? Oh. Hotty totty. I told him. He was like, are you going to drink? And I was like, I'll drink on the Saturday for the game.

19:52And Friday, I'll be a game time decision.

19:54Jules:And that's on planning in advance. pre-planning. Why did he ask you? Because he knows Harrison's a teetotaler now. What's a teetotaler? You don't drink. What's a teetotaler? What? You guys have never heard of teetotalers? Is it in Merriam-Webster? I'm sure it is. Teetotaler, T-E-E-T-O-T-A-L-E-R. Oh, I was thinking a T-E-A space, totaler. A person who completely and voluntarily abstains from drinking all types of alcoholic beverages. I teetottle 13 of the 14 days a week. Okay. 13 of the 14 days a week? Every two weeks. Okay. Teetottle. Yeah. So 0.5. Yeah. Okay. Out of seven. Yeah. Six. Depends on the week.

20:43Yeah. I teetottle six to seven. Six to seven days.

20:48Jules:Okay. So he was asking you what's going on. Okay. Got it. Got it. Yeah. Very good. I don't have much to say on that. Okay. Where to from here? Where to from here? I have some inspiration for us all. I saw this and I loved it so much that I wanted to talk about it. Just a friendly reminder. That's what this girl says in her TikTok. That the curse of discipline is every day looks the same. But the curse of no discipline is every year looks the same. So good. because the idea is you look back to three years ago and you're not in the same spot and i think a really good example of this is for example now we're signed with dear media and you ask yourself what went in what went into the podcast to get there right and i it's so when i look back on 2026 versus 20 nope this isn't we're in 2026 when i look back on 2025 versus 2026 that was that's going to be a big point of differentiation you know 2026 will be oh that's when we signed with dear media that's when we did dear media by day which by the way we should talk about that yeah we're doing so harrison and i are on a panel on saturday for dear media but i haven't done a panel like that really where you i've done i did the nuna mom one where people ask questions and so i'm excited about it yeah this is my first ever non-Flock CPG oriented panel.

22:19Jules:Yeah, you've done I can tell you've done panels because when we were prepping for it Jules wasn't in here we did the prep by ourselves Harrison was really running laps around me. That's unfair to say. Like I would like say a question and I'd be like I need 10 minutes to think about this and he would just like rattle off three points that made sense and I was like okay great. The panel's on balance and when when I saw that when that was what they proposed it really shined out on like how much I actually have to say on balance and how much I value balance and how much like effort I put around our life architecture to optimize for balance.

22:59So like while it's a weird, um, a weird subject matter, it's actually family and work. Right.

23:08Jules:Is, is the guise of it. Yes. There's just, there's a ton that, that I have to say, we have to say. And so we also have to go to outfit planning for it because they recommend that we wear solids, not a lot of patterns because our background is going to have some patterns on it. And my question to you is what Harrison are we getting? Are we getting the collared shirt Harrison or are we getting the painter pant Harrison with the backwards hat like swag or are we getting this new golf adjacent prep person? You're definitely not getting golf adjacent. I'm a little mad about this though. Like I didn't fall in love with that person.

23:44so what's you're not you're not getting that it's going on there's a chance that we're gonna get uh so h-bar ranch is the name of the brand i think you're gonna get an h-bar ranch shirt depending on is it indoor or outdoor indoor okay so it's austin that's not a crazy question we just threw her birthday party outdoors but we wouldn't sit on a panel out there crazier things have happened i need i need to pause this for one second I think you have something in the middle of your forehead and I can't stop looking at me or her no Alex I think it's just like a flake of dead skin there is something and Julie is telling me about it that you didn't tell me about and you're still you're pretending like you can't tell if it's there or not don't lie it's really not that obvious but like it's like I just oh it's here it's here you're right can we do a zoom in no I could only see it when you were switching to the side.

24:47No! I'm kidding. Yeah, I promise. I truly promise. Even when you first turned, I couldn't tell. I don't think it will be super noticeable. I don't know what it was. I don't mind. I just think it's absurd that Harrison, you know, couldn't see it. I was lost in your eyes.

25:04Jules:Right. Okay, so what are we getting? An H-Bar Ranch? I think you're going to get Western theme. No hat. I'm trying to do a lot less hats. I only did a hat today because I was running super late. I'm not so sure we can allow you to wear a hat on a panel anyways. May I? No, yeah, we can. I also need to re-up my hat game. You don't. And if you do, you have to purge. For every hat that comes in that house, one hat goes out. Yeah, we need a hat purge. It's insane. We need a toy purge too. I tried to do a toy purge, but I've got more toys, so I've got to do more of a purge. Okay, so I think I'm going to wear, perhaps, I'm thinking monochromatic.

25:40I don't know what that means.

25:41Jules:All one color. Okay. I like to do monochromatic. Yeah, I like a monochromatic move and I want a pair of slacks with the same color top. Okay. Send me what you're wearing because I'll plan around that. It's just a bit tough, you know, September. Oh, summer ends this week. Huge news. Summer ends today. Today. Guys, say goodbye to summer. A moment for summer. Okay, what was your highlight? Well, I'm going to give it to Tate's birthday. Tate's birthday. You can't have that because I just took it. 100 % you have to pick something different it's 100 % it's worth it you could pick no we're allowed to have the same one okay alright fair so anyways just okay so the curse of progress is every day looks the same but the curse of how does she word it the curse of no discipline is every year looks the same and so I I really like that because I don't want every year to look the same and sometimes it feels like you're in it it's just like constant repetitive repetitive repetitive and then boom you get the thing you do the network deal you do xyz right yeah okay no tweet of the week this week that's the tweet of the week that is the tweet of the week let's i have one more thing to discuss about birthdays so there's this discourse dialogue going on on tiktok somebody said you know going to your friend's birthday is optional and now there's an influx of people saying no going to your friend's birthday is not optional.

27:14Jules:I know we're all tired, but birthdays come once a year. So if that person means a lot to you, you show up to the birthday. Not only do you show up to the birthday, you stay till the end. You put on your dress and you go to the birthday because you have to be a villager to be in a village. That's kind of the point of it. Yeah. One, I'm stunned that there's discourse on this. Two, I'm very surprised you're going to focus on the end. I think the most important thing as it pertains to arrival and departure time is you are there first. If the party starts at four and it's like your inner circle friend, you got to be there at 350.

27:53Jules:I really love it. I like this point. That first 15 minutes of a party is so awkward. It is so awkward. Like when the first six people show up. Agreed. And like, I kind of like, yeah. And I almost think - That would be the only thing I do for the next party we throw is like send out a couple texts on the front end of like, hey, can you please show up at 4 p.m.? Right. So do a couple clarifiers to the people. But some of – like so Olivia, for example. Yeah. When she got there. Yeah. She was like nap time. Like she knew. She was just like nap. We are late because. But it was the same thing with the neighbors.

28:43That's why I wish that we just like send three to four texts.

28:47Jules:Yeah. Of people that we knew either worked at their nap time and didn't have kids. And it's like, hey, do you mind coming at four o 'clock? Yeah, especially if they don't have kids for sure. Because I think like when you're dealing with nap times, it's like you can't come if they're asleep. You're just like, oh, I'm not going to be able to be there. Yeah. Like neighbor T was planning on coming at 3.30. Right. It's like sometimes you just can't get there. but I will say so there is this girl named Stephanie who was in Tate's dance class yeah and she came first and what I her and I got to know each other through dance class because she was the one that was always like I'll let Tate use this water bottle like her vibe is a 10 I was so happy she was first I was just like oh you're first and we were sitting there laughing but I just more so like I almost like feel bad for the first person who comes but I was happy with her because I'm like she'll be fine yeah And we sat there and made fun of how intense our birthday party was.

29:41Jules:I said, I didn't want to invite all the dance moms this year because I didn't want them to see this. And she was like, yeah. You just want them to think you're not that mom. And I was like, exactly. And we laughed. And it was great. Tate had fun. We had fun. Friends had fun. No, you got to be able. Hold on. I want to double click on this. I love our intense, extravagant birthday. We have to be able to laugh about it, though. Like we were all in on our joke, her and I. And that's the point. Very fortunate to be in the position to do it. Yeah, but no, it was like we can laugh about it. This episode is brought to you by Honest.

30:21Jules:Parenting little ones is 100 tiny decisions in one day. And some of the most important ones are about what's touching your baby's skin. You guys have heard us talk about this on the podcast before, that anything that touches your child multiple times a day needs extra attention. With Tate & Rocky, that's bath time, messes, cleanups, and cuddles on the couch. That's why Honest created Baby's Essentials made for life's most delicate skin. Honest holds every product to their highest standard, the Honest Standard. They're intentional about every ingredient they put in and every one they leave out.

30:54Jules:Their baby products are hypoallergenic and dermatologist-tested from their clean, conscious wipes to their two-in-one shampoo and body wash and face and body lotion. Every product is designed for the delicate details that matters most. You guys know I read labels on everything and with Honest, I don't second guess. They're Honest, mother of all standards. Shop Honest on Amazon, Walmart, and Target. Okay, so one thing that I also hear about this, like staying early and not staying early, or not leaving early and not leaving early, when it comes to weddings yes there's the send-off often right okay and so how do you feel about staying until the send-off because that's an unknown time sometimes it's 11 sometimes it's 1 a.m once again like i think the most important well weddings you have to be there on time everything but weddings is if it's a four o 'clock wedding you have to be there at four everyone knows that you can roll because there's the ceremony is going to start if it's a four o 'clock wedding you have to be there at 3 30.

31:58Jules:Yeah like you have to get in and get a seat like that's a you can't show up at 4 30 to a wedding you wouldn't be able to go in

32:07regarding the send-off like I do think this is like an inner circle versus outer circle friend thing agreed agreed and like again I've said it before but like I only seek to have inner circles

32:20Jules:Jules is big on, yeah. So any wedding that's an inner circle person, you're getting there on time or early and staying till the end. But if it's like a family friend who I love dearly, I'm down to leave before the sendoff. Okay. Okay. So maybe this is a Northern versus Southern thing, but I'm just, I don't really think. Please don't. I'm not recalling a lot of sendoffs. Oh. Tea. no send-offs up there. Like at the end of the night, like a grand... With like sparklers into the car and everyone waves and the car says, just married? You guys don't do send-offs in Canada? Wedding send-offs where everyone lines up and then the bride and groom, they run through?

33:09Jules:They kiss at the end, they get the picture. Yeah, you throw the stuff. It's like a lot of times the bride has changed dresses. Or am I exposing myself? that you're not a stay till the send off kind of guy because i i go to bed i go to bed decently early okay put a sock in it over there you started recently going to bed early you're no i've never been a late night partier harrison you could stay to the end of a wedding what time is the send off it depends that's the whole thing you never know it depends on if there's an after party okay but yeah i think that you i think that there's probably send-offs in Canada.

33:45Jules:Probably. Likely. Yeah, the people will tell us. Do you guys do send-offs in Canada? I think everywhere in the United States does them, I think. Now, I don't know that they've always been so much of a thing. I think that there's always been the just married car. But we've started adding sparkler or you throw rose petals or sometimes there are fireworks. I recently saw a drone show. So, you know, as we do, gender reveals is the same way. we make things more extravagant so we have like extravagant send-offs yes but i think you guys have them up there i'm thinking about ours now because i'm really starting to do some wedding planning in my head mentally and we're gonna probably have one and i know what we're gonna leave in the caddy no no i can't say what it is it'll give away the venue oh of course so

34:45So, yeah, no, caddy's killing me. It's officially going in the shop today.

34:48Jules:Caddy's not starting. Yeah. We were going with my parents to church yesterday, and our church is around the corner. Coolest thing we could have done, take the caddy. Just out there. One thing that's cool is the caddy. One thing that's not cool is when we keep getting in the caddy, and it just isn't starting. Yeah. Yeah. I guess for the listener we have a 74 Cadillac Eldorado burnt orange convertible that and it bats 50 % of the time that is used to bat 50 % that you announced last week was going into the shop no it goes in the shop today I know but you said last week it was going in the shop and then you guys were in it like that day and I was like this is confusing because our neighbor's pretty good at getting the car to start Tim got it going and then yeah right but I gave up we had a last minute push it's gone yeah yeah okay um potty training updates are she's trucking along our little girl she loves she loves doing the potty training toilet learning um i would say there's no updates there and i would say for rocky oh we have a huge update on rocky what how we forgot about this and we forgot about last week what we have a huge rocky update the sleep no what's going on with rocky every day now he's trying to crawl he's joining the nanny share he's joining the nanny share i forget rocket man rocket man he's gone to the nanny share and he loves it it is crazy i'm going to explain the nanny share really fast okay neighbor is very important part of our lives they have a daughter two weeks younger than tate they have a son five months older than rocky tate and winnie have uh they're together monday wednesday they're together monday through friday they're the same nanny uh and then we're running that same program back with uh with rocky and their kid yates and and rocky just started it last week so rocky so now basically what was happening on tuesday and thursday whenever Tate would go over there was Rocket Man was staying home.

37:02Jules:And kudos to Harrison for realizing it's time Rocky goes and he joins the nanny shirt and he's around the babies all day, every day. And he loves it. He loves just being a part of it. He just wants to be included. It's as simple as that. And he gets in the, we call it the DJ booth, but it's the, what do they call it? Skip hop? They call it a skip hop, I think. The table that you put him in and maybe called an activity table he was in that he's loving it he's really just he really just wants to be included and be with the kids yeah and the kids are doing really good with with it's fun for tate because now her brother's there too which is precious okay so that's kind of our all right pop culture oh book club any book club topics i have a book suggestion for your book club well i just finished my book so what?

37:52Okay. Princess Diana's brother just wrote a book about Princess Diana.

37:58Jules:Is it out? What is it called? This is this is the problem with me. Jules will tell us. Okay. Give us the details Jules. I saw that this morning as well. It will be coming out September 22nd. Tomorrow. So it comes out tomorrow. Okay what's it called? It's called Swan Song Diana My Sister. Written by Charles Spencer. This feels like a must read for you. I will absolutely read it. Absolutely read it. Why is he writing this now? What's going on with him? I think that this was the same publishing company that wrote the book about one of the other guys in the family. And so. He's writing it for the 30th anniversary of her death.

38:50Okay. There you go. Aww. There you go.

38:53Jules:She died 30 years ago. August 2027 will be the 30th anniversary. So did she die at 35? She died at 36. 36. Okay. Oh, yeah, because it'll be that. Because she has the same exact birthday as my dad, so I always know how old. Which is my birthday, but they're the same year. Oh. Yeah, so I always know how old she is. She turned 65 this year. Okay, yeah, I will read that. And I will suggest to my book club that we also read it because now that everyone's back and it's fall, I think we could get back into it. Okay. But everyone did end up reading Calamity Club, which I love. All right. What's going on with Warren Buffett?

39:34Jules:So we also have a segment where, well, this isn't really a segment, but pop culture and current events. Okay. Our man Warren. Warren. Warren Buffett. Warren Buffett has officially stepped down from Berkshire Hathaway. Okay. How old is he? Jules is going to pull this up. I think he's older than we're thinking. Yeah, what do you think? Like 88. I think there's a nine handle. I'm going to go 93. 97. 96. 96. And he was still working? Retired? Okay, and are people speculating as to why he's retiring? What? Old age? I don't know. Well, I'm just saying declining health. I don't think we have a smoking gun on this one.

40:23There's no tie between him retiring and the F***, okay?

40:32And, well, I thought that this was really, really interesting because he is known as one of the greatest, if not the greatest investors of our time.

40:43Jules:He's got to be the greatest, no? So if you invested$1 ,000, I pulled some data. If you invested$1 ,000 in Berkshire Hathaway in 1965, what do you think it would be worth today? $100 million. Just shy of$61 million. Wow. Okay. Wow. I got some charts that I'm going to put up here too. All right. Over that period, if you put$1 ,000 into the S &P 500, what would it be worth? over that same time period. 500 grand. Yeah, about$428 ,000. Wow. We're going to double check these and cancel them out. Whatever's on the chart is what's real. But directionally and close. So you're telling me, you invest the same amount of money in the S &P 500 and Warren Buffett.

41:31Jules:One is worth, give or take, 500 ,000. The other is worth just shy of 60 million. Yeah, just shy of 60 million. So here's what gets unbelievable. This is crazy. Now, how long has that outperformance continued for? And so I pulled his returns or Berkshire Hathaway's returns over the last 20 years. So if you go from the 2005 period to the 2025 period, what do you think$10 ,000 invested with Berkshire Hathaway in 2005 is versus the S &P?

42:14Jules:i have no clue you lost me a little bit okay say it again okay so so a thousand dollars 1965 you put a thousand dollars in berkshire hathaway you put a thousand dollars in s &p 500 okay yes they were drastically more now we're in 2005 okay okay we're doing the same thing thousand bucks in berkshire hathaway thousand bucks and that's what are they worth today all right S &P 500 I'm gonna guess 250 ,000 and I'm gonna guess because now I can't be accounting for as much inflation right well time I think is what you're referring to okay and then for Warren I'm gonna call it 20 million

43:01so Their returns over that period are essentially the same.

43:09Jules:Wow. About 10.7%. Wow. 10.8%. So$1 ,000 invested with each of them would be worth around 8 ,500. He slightly outperformed the S &P 500 over that period. So this all happened, the good performance all happened before 2005? 10.78%. So 10.78 % versus 10.71%. And what am I learning from this? What you're learning from this is how hard it is to make money in today. What you're learning from this is how much harder it is to make money today versus pre-2000. Because now in investing, they have the saying, everyone's an investor. And so so much more capital has flowed into investing. So many more people are doing it.

44:06There's a lot more regulation around what's legal and what's not. That it's become very hard to outperform the market. So it's just like it's another supporting data point on how we invest our money, which is largely just buying ETFs. okay so so what i'm getting at is like in while he was very good and there's no doubting he was very good it also speaks to how important it is to be somewhere early and be in the right industry thank you okay in 1970 there weren't a lot of people out there looking for investments

44:50Jules:well let's let's equate to social media you also can be early on instagram and it was a lot easier to grow back in the day than it is now because it's more crowded exactly exactly so warren buffett you know is it is it well you know i'm not so sure kim kardashian was early um can't think can somebody give me an early who was early paris that's the perfect example paris hilton the original influencer as they sometimes call her she's a great example if she was early Yeah, I do as clickbaity as is Paris Hilton, the Warren Buffett of influencing, as clickbaity as that is. Out of respect for Mr. Buffett, I'm going to need to push back on that, even though it may be very accurate.

45:44Jules:It's the best example. Hey, out of respect for Paris Hilton, I'm going to say, why can you not draw a comparison between the two? She's a phenomenal businesswoman. She is. all right i'll stay on the sidelines here this episode is brought to you by little spoon here's what nobody tells you about feeding your kids it's never one and done every stage brings a new round of decisions and the second you think you've nailed it they level up and you're back in the aisle squinting at labels thinking what do i get and that's where little spoon comes in for us they cover every stage and i trust them just as much with each one every one of their baby and toddler products is tested for over 500 contaminants, heavy metals included, and they've banned more than 100 ingredients across the board.

46:29Jules:The label homework is done before it ever gets to me. In our house, the Yogos are a full-on obsession, except Tate calls them Go-Gos, so now we all do. And the puffs are a staple too, you guys. They're organic. They're made with simple ingredients and the perfect size for little hands just figuring out how to feed themselves, which matters more than you'd think. And I love that they come in a resealable pouch. Then as they grow, there are biteables and they're cut into bite size so you can do the self-feeding. There's plates with veggies tucked inside of all of the food for the picky phase and there's snacks for everything in between.

47:04Jules:So every time Tate hits a new stage, I'm not starting from scratch looking for a brand I trust. Feeding the kids doesn't have to be complicated. Little Spoon makes it easy with real nutritionally balanced meals and snacks designed for every stage. It shows up ready to go, takes the pressure off, and somehow still gets devoured, veggies and all. No artificial dyes, flavors, or sweeteners either. And you know what? That's a win I'll take every time. Get 30 % off your first online order at littlespoon.com slash 2parents with code two parents that's l-i-t-t-l-e-s-p-o-o-n.com slash two parents with code two parents for 30 off your first order are we good on the investing side of this or do you want do you want to hear more my only question is like i feel what is that discouraging it's a little sad yeah it wasn't it wasn't um i didn't learn anything that i can do today does that make sense but so so or just I need to be more realistic.

48:07Fact. I'm going to reshare my conclusion. Okay. The conclusion is about where we put our capital and how we invest our capital. And recognizing, okay, we have two options. We can either spend a lot of time and energy and effort trying to find great investment opportunities. or we can just blindly buy ETFs like the S &P 500.

48:36Jules:Oh, this is an S &P, okay, this is a case for the S &P 500. It's a case study for just buying ETFs. Now, hold on. That's what it is for me because it's like if he, if he, you know, can't outperform anymore or can barely outperform, then what chance does a guy like me have? And just so we're clear, like 10 % annualized returns. Great. Those are awesome returns. Well, it's more than zero. Yeah. And so that's where my takeaway is. And your takeaway is not financial advice? Oh, yeah. It's definitely not. This is not financial advice. This is for us. And hold on. I would like to get one more accolade here for Warren.

49:24Yeah.

49:24Jules:This is feeling very, I'm not loving, you know, equating. I once went to his favorite steakhouse. I had a volleyball tournament, and I never will forget it. I had a volleyball tournament in Omaha. Does he live in Omaha? He's from Omaha. Omaha. And his favorite steakhouse is there, and it is an old school, awesome. You got to walk down these stairs. It feels a bit like a basement. There's pictures all over the walls. Old wood. Awesome. Okay, so Warren Buffett. Awesome favorite steakhouse. Yeah, don't know the name of it. But I do have a couple, you know, I think I was, I don't remember, a freshman in high school.

50:04Jules:Vaguely, give or take. And I went and it was really cool. I feel like he's got some notorious behaviors. Like I think he's a huge McDonald's guy. Okay, he's a big McDonald's guy. Doesn't he still drive like an old Lincoln? I think he lives a very, very low-key lifestyle. So how much money does this, what's his worth? By the way, I'm not a Warren Buffett stan. Why? And so just some guys are. Some guys fly to Omaha for the annual shareholder meeting. Because I'm generally not a stan of people. Oh, but you like him. You respect him? You're not not a stan. Oh, I respect him tremendously. Oh, okay, I see.

50:48But I don't know much about him other than, you know, he's known as one of the best investors of our time.

50:54Jules:Okay. Okay. Yeah. And a couple of weird, a couple of random anecdotes. Like he loves McDonald's. He loves McDonald's. And I want to say, does he drink a martini a day or no? I think his lifestyle is much more around drinking a martini day than it is around like eating a bunch of, I don't know, something gross that longevity people like to eat. He has a Coca-Cola a day. Okay, that's what it is. He has never consumed alcohol in his life. Oh. Oh, look at that. He's a teetotaler. Shout out Dr. Huberman. He's a teetotaler. Okay. And great. all right good for warren sorry the where it gets it find your like and it's about finding our my edge elsewhere yeah i think that's a really good point all right tweet of the week on to dogs wait what was the thing that you said before about this my dog making me 15 years less mature checks out less mature or less stressed no no you said changing my brain age by 15 years That was separate than what we were talking about.

52:04I sent two animal things today. Did you see it in the chat? Owning a pet is linked to reduced brain age of up to 15 years. Yeah. And if you click the link, it'll give you a study. Reduced brain age? Yeah. It's like really good for aging. Oh, in a good way. In a good way. Oh. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. A point for dog owners. It keeps you young. It keeps you young. Sorry, I shared two very pro-having animals as pets articles. Pet ownership is associated with greater cognitive and brain health in a cross-sectional sample across the adult lifespan. Okay. Tell us more. Human-animal interactions that stem from pet ownership have a wide range of benefits, including social, emotional, and physical health.

52:52These factors also tend to improve cognition. with the following logic owning a pet could directly enhance cognitive and brain health through mechanisms like improvements in well-being socialization and decreased stress love it okay i feel 15 years younger that's totally true they they keep you young uh yes and so now here's the now which is why it's so good for old people to have companions of dogs yep yeah okay and then what's the other thing do you see the other study i shared

53:22Jules:Is that the one about the hair, the cortisol spiking? Yes. So this is unbelievable. So they tested dog hair and human hair and the cortisol levels in those hair and between owner and pet. And they had an incredibly high correlation between owners and pets. And so when dogs, when the owners would be stressed, the dogs would be stressed and vice versa. And when the owners wouldn't be stressed, the dogs also wouldn't be stressed. And so. So dog. OK. And so, yeah, to me, it just it speaks to like. Well, actually, I want to hear the dog owners take around this. I don't know about like the long term stress thing, but I will say I always say that Jenny can read a room.

54:11So like if I'm sick, like Ginny is down to stay in bed for the entire day because she just like knows that the energy is off and I need to be in bed. If I'm not sick, then she acts her normal self, I would say. But I truly like think when I don't feel well, she, I don't know, she makes herself not feel well or what, but like it is very noticeable. They're just – they're a natural extension of us as humans and –

54:38Jules:But I think – I can't wait for the day that we get a family dog or two. And I've never had more conviction on two things. Okay. One, we will get family dogs. Two, we will get them at the point when the children can start taking care of them. Yes, and they want a dog. Yes, and there's no diapers in the house. None. not a diaper to be seen do you agree with that yes yes no diapers in the house because kids are in diapers like all of our kids are out of diapers okay they themselves are potty trained we can't be changing diapers and going like i think that was my point i don't want to be changing diaper i'm picking up a dog's poop it's a lot of okay so two two other things i think that are a good takeaway from this.

55:24So, um,

55:27Jules:a dog's happiness or a dog's lower stress levels, not caused by walks, weather, or the dog's own life, but it's driven by the owner. So when an owner has higher anxiety, the dog has higher anxiety year round. The second thing is dogs sink their chemistry to humans over months, not moments. So it's a consistent build. I think it's the same thing with kids. It's not a one moment where they sink it or it makes them happy or X, Y, Z. They're feeling your vibe 24-7. Okay. Very interesting. I don't know much beyond that. After 15 ,000 years together, dogs are basically emotional mirrors all with a heartbeat.

56:13Jules:15 ,000 years? What's going on with that? What does that mean? Maybe that's how long dogs have been domesticated.

56:21so what would you say jules don't i hope you didn't say what i think you just said what did you just say did you say that's how long you ran the study for no that's what i said

56:32Jules:she said i said 15 000 years what does that mean she said that's how long dogs maybe oh wait yes yeah that's what i would have been domesticated between 15 000 and 30 000 years 100 how many years old is okay we're speaking the same language how many years ago so what was the year 15 000 years ago i mean that's a shocking number no we're all oh the earth is 4.5 billion years old okay i will say i get very tripped up when we start looking at like what like if you like ask me what happened over the past hundred years i have a very good handle on it right but But the difference between like what happened a thousand years ago versus 15 ,000 years versus a million years ago.

57:2015 ,000 years ago. You've lost me.

57:21Jules:So hold on. How long ago, how many years ago did the United States become a country? 250. Duh. Yes. Okay. I just wanted to make sure you guys did that. Humans have been, thank you for dusting us. Humans have been on the earth for 300 ,000 years. Okay. So 250 years ago, the United States became a country. 15 ,000 years ago, we were domesticating dogs. Yeah. Like I'm having a hard time comprehending that. Yeah. But that's, did we even have houses? I don't know. This is where I need us to not expose ourselves. When did wagons? Yeah. My guess would be 15. Well, when was the wheel invented? Yeah. Because the wheel, to have a wagon, you needed a wheel.

58:12The wagon was invented 5 ,500 years ago.

58:15Jules:When was the wheel invented? Had to be around then. The wheel was invented 6 ,000 years ago. It's hard to comprehend 15 ,000 years ago, just in general. Dogs aside, it's hard to comprehend that level of time ago. Yeah. And how – the fact America has only been around for 250 years is – Can you ask, Chad, like what else was happening 15 ,000 years ago besides the domestication of dogs? Humans lived as nomadic hunters and gatherers in a world deeply shaped by the last ice age. Okay. Hunting and gathering. There you go. Groups sought refuge inside of natural caves and built temporary outdoor structures.

59:00They weren't living in houses.

59:01Jules:So dogs lived in caves. Yeah, probably. Makes sense. They would create sophisticated tools out of stones and bones and antlers. And they would eat game, fish, and edible roots and berries and nuts. Paleo diet. The other day I saw a TikTok that says you should be washing your raw nuts. We don't have time for that. And dried fruit. Get out of here. I eat so many so much dried fruit and so many raw nuts I don't have time for that I mean who does and then they're all wet ah Jules gotta get that ban like I

59:44Jules:then next thing I know I just think we're gonna have to wash everything oh the last thing I'll say is that I saw that you should wash your um shredded cheese no you're just getting trolled no i don't think i am but buying buying shredded cheese though is bad business i'm not i don't i don't like buying shredded cheese you like to shred your own shred your own yeah and it's it's one of those annoying things but they put like anti most of the shredded cheeses if not all of them have anti-caking agents in them and it's just like why jack yourselves up with these unnecessary things so he likes to buy the thing and shred it himself okay yeah yeah i don't love washing the shredder though it sucks big opportunity for cut fingers which i'm not loving yeah we need a better shredder i say that what we need our coffee maker has arrived we need one of those yeah we do we need it we need it we do we have one of those.

1:00:44Jules:We don't. Bought it off TikTok shop. Oh yeah, we do. Oh. Wait, it's... We have to do a giant purge. Our house has to be purged. Too complicated. It has to be purged. Our coffee maker arrived. We got the Jura C3 or E3. Don't know. It's what our neighbors have. Very excited about it. Simple. Gonna set it up today. I got white. Is that a black? Which I think will look good. I think it's going to look really good, actually. I support. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. All right. Speaking of coffee. So this is the bigger of the week. Can you bring an iced coffee to an interview? No. I'm going to go no here. And I'm going to.

1:01:29Non-event.

1:01:31Jules:Here's why I think no. Can we give the background story? Yes. All right. So a corporate recruiter at Caitlin Recruiter, she says you are that Gen Z is blowing interviews by bringing iced coffees to them because it looks like you went to target went to starbucks and then just stopped by your interview on the way home i don't agree with that at all i think it actually looks in fact like you were prepared for your interview because if you show up on time great then you you went and got your iced coffee ahead of time good time management skills and then you showed up to your interview great done it's not that serious if any if anything it's a net positive for that reason.

1:02:09Jules:Yeah. But with how hard it is to find great people for a specific role, to be adding iced coffee into the equation, just like I challenge what your hiring requirements are. It feels absurd to me. People are saying... Whether you're talking white-collar jobs, blue-collar jobs... but Jim Z's rebuttaling, which I like this take, I'm very, I'm very, I agree with this is if ice coffee disqualifies me, then I don't want that job. Well, it's, I totally agree with that. And it's the same way if, yeah, I was going to, that was exactly what I was going to say. I don't want any part of a company where that's part of, or any part of a hiring manager where that's part of their criteria.

1:02:58Cause that means they're just obsessed about the things that don't matter.

1:03:01Jules:Here's why I say no to it. I say no to it. Like I'm not taking an iced coffee to an interview because it sweats everywhere. Like it's either going to get on me. It's going to get on the table. Now I'm all for you taking this kind of coffee though. I'll take one. I don't care. What were you going to say? Well, we know you'll take one. You'll bring one to a podcast. And that's the other reason why. Do you know why I think I'm scarred from iced coffees? Because you do no lid. And I get, I'm not going to do the noise for you guys, but it's, it's a bit intrusive. That's why I wouldn't take it to the interview.

1:03:29I just, I think you guys are big on etiquette. And people are saying this is bad etiquette to bring a beverage in general to an interview. Oh, I think that's just missing the mark.

1:03:44Jules:I think that I'm more concerned on if you're on time. And that you're dressed appropriately. Like if you show up and you got stains on your t-shirt, what matters more? Stains on your t-shirt? I have a stain on my t-shirt right now, by the way. I was going to say that. You're also pro stain. Not for a job interview. Oh, I don't mind if you show up with a stain on your t-shirt as long as it fits your vibe. Yeah. Just can I clarify what the stain is? It looks like maybe Tate's like shoe. It's Bubber's shoe on the way out of the house today. Bubber had eggs all over her face. She had hard boiled eggs today for breakfast.

1:04:23Jules:And then she wanted to give me a kiss so bad. And I was late. And so I let her kiss me and you got eggs on my face. It was really cute. yeah she was like doing the kickoff thing and i didn't have time other things that you can't do in a job interview check your phone that actually to me i think is a huge okay show up with your iced coffee all day long if you look at your phone in the middle of a job interview that might do it for me yeah that might i'm saying there's a lot more things that matter that might be the one thing that could do it for me i'm trying to think unless you have a parent that calls i'm i'm down if you want your experiences how your interpersonal skills are.

1:05:00This is ridiculous. It's ridiculous that we even have this anywhere. It's not on the list. It doesn't matter.

1:05:06Jules:Iced coffee? Yeah. What's one more on the list? How would you feel a guy wore open-toed shoes? Your communication skills. Open-toed shoes to it. Depends the job. Fine with me. I don't mind. I'm trying to think of one other thing. Do you care about a soft handshake? No, I care about your background and your experience and your work ethic and your communication skills and how you handle adversity. Like, I care about the stereotypical things that one should care about in a job interview because that's what matters. I'm just trying to get one for the plot here. I'm trying to get one for the plot. How do you feel about if they were to check their phone?

1:05:42Yeah, that would be a really, really bad move.

1:05:45Jules:What else? You're not going to care where they parked.

1:05:52Jules:Okay, well, okay, if they're five minutes late, do you care? Yes, tremendously. sleep you do care if they're five minutes late the same way i care if they're 20 minutes early being 20 minutes early is the same thing as being five minutes late completely agree it's bad use of time it's a bad use of time so what do you want three minutes early i think that five to ten minutes early is the sweet spot three minutes earlier cutting it a little close a little close okay hold on i have so that's why i actually like if you show up with an iced coffee because it means that you got to the building 20 to 30 minutes early had time to go and get the iced coffee and then get there five to seven minutes beforehand.

1:06:28Like if you show up 20 minutes early without a coffee in your hand, it's like go and get the coffee.

1:06:33Jules:Right, use this 10 minutes. Yeah. Now, hold on. If you have the best candidate ever. Yeah. But they were five minutes late, then what? I mean, they are truly the standout. What I've learned in hiring and growing teams

1:06:56is you can have the best background ever, but if you're not going to do the little things, you may never get the performance that you need.

1:07:09Jules:But hold on. They blow you away. They come in, they're five minutes late. You still do the interview anyways because you liked their resume. And they were that good in person. And why are they five minutes late? They say, sorry, traffic, the worst excuse you can give. Did they tell me beforehand that they were going to be five minutes late? They sent you an email on the way while they were sitting in the traffic. If they sent me an email and that email came in 15 minutes before the meeting, then I'm good with that. Okay. It comes in five minutes before the meeting. Less good with it. They don't say anything at all.

1:07:40Then that's probably a no. Because at that point, you lose, especially in our line of work, communication skills are so important.

1:07:50Jules:All right. So you like an email. We're going to make mistakes. We're going to have, deal with tough situations. I want to know when those mistakes are coming up that we're communicating around them. Okay. And so if they, let's say now that they show up five minutes late and they say nothing at all and they just roll in, like nothing was wrong. Like they weren't even late. It'd be tough to get over that. And would you say something to them? I mean, there's a chance I probably wouldn't even take the interview, honestly. Okay. Okay. And now if somebody checks their phone in the middle of the interview, what would you do?

1:08:22are you saying i'm not looking at everything those binary terms like you don't get the job i think that interviews are a consistent aggregation of of monitoring positives and negatives and so is that a negative yes but do the positives offset it hopefully okay so if you're running late i guess the consensus is send the email like communicate it and communicate it accurately and don't do it three minutes beforehand give the person time to let them know you're running late

1:08:51Jules:yeah okay and if it's not traffic if you just left late do you suggest saying it's traffic what do you suggest saying i don't suggest lying so what do you want me to say like i left late i just left late my time man don't do that don't do that what don't do what don't leave late but if i did if i if i call you i'm tate and i'm 25 years old on my way to a job interview and i call my dad and i say i'm gonna be five minutes late i've mapped that i left late there's no traffic but i'm just gonna be five minutes late use doesn't really matter to me because okay just say running late running five minutes late like you were late you should have you should have given yourself enough buffer whether it was traffic or how long she didn't what are you gonna suggest she says i don't care at this you you're there's to me there's no golden answer like you're late you've docked a ton of marks okay gonna have to make it up elsewhere okay okay all right is there anything else you want to discuss no okay well you guys we love you thank you for listening we're so excited to be a dear media also like we're excited to be a dear media by day this saturday so come if you want uh it's gonna there's four panels there's a break in between there's a happy hour afterwards there's a swag bag so it's gonna be really fun there's a happy hour happy hour afterwards yeah after because lauren and michael and whitney do i need to pre-plan my drink for that day you might tell us are you gonna stay and mingle uh a lot of my friends are coming at 11 a.m and so that was a big concern of mine.

1:10:33So that works out very well.

1:10:35Jules:Yeah, that does work out well. But a lot of my friends are coming and I was thinking we could do a dinner with them afterwards. Oh, for sure. Done. Okay. Love you guys. This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Monday!! First, the big news: WE ARE OFFICIALLY A DEAR MEDIA PRODUCTION!! (yay) If you're new here from the Dear Media world: hi!! We're Alex and Harrison, married, two kids (Tate and Rocky), and the “third-wheel” (lovingly) is Jules our producer!!! Welcome, we're so happy you're here. And if you’re not new here, the short story is - nothing is changing!!!

Then we get into the episode with a confession: we are officially the parents who throw the over-the-top birthday parties. The exact parents we judged before we had kids. We get into why we've fully made peace with it (the joy is REA), plus the undisputed best time slot for a toddler birthday party: 5 to 7 PM. Everyone's out of nap territory, people are always looking for something to do during this dead zone, and dinner is handled. We will be taking no further questions at this time hahaha

And the rest: Harrison is teetotaling 13 out of 14 days “per week” (his math, not ours lol), the Tweet of the Week we're carrying into fall ("the curse of no discipline is every year looks the same"), and the TikTok discourse we had to weigh in on: is going to your friend's birthday party optional?! Plus a Rocky update: he's officially in the nanny share and he LOVES it.

Then book club: Princess Diana's brother wrote a memoir about her (Swan Song, out tomorrow!!), and Harrison's corner: Warren Buffett officially stepped down from Berkshire Hathaway (we think it might be because he’s 96 but idk you tell us lol). The math will break your brain: $1,000 invested with him in 1965 is worth almost $60 MILLION today. We get into what made him one of one, whether anyone can do it again, and Alex's hot take that Paris Hilton is the Warren Buffett of influencing (out of respect for Mr. Buffett, Harrison disagrees LOL).

We close with the dog corner: two studies say dogs are genuinely good for your brain (dog owners, your pet might be syncing to YOUR stress levels??), our updated family dog rules (short version: no diapers in the house), and the internet's current debate: can you bring an iced coffee to a job interview?!

Hope everyone has a great week :-) LOVE YOU!
