Gemini and Chrome is here for it. Ready to make anything online make sense? there's no place like chrome check responses set up required compatibility and availability varies 18 plus lads we're back new series 28th of july about bloody time yeah it's not as long a break and i think for the better 10 episodes and i am going to say that these are the this is the best series that we've done i know i say every time but this time i mean it i've meant it before you've I've really mean it this time.
26I hang my hat on it. I don't think you do say it all the time, but I'm going to agree with you.
34Great chaps. Join your break. Loved it. Now, bored me. Well, that's why we're here. I like working. Yeah. Well, that's why we're here, because we're obviously break between series, but the Patreon episodes, there's been some absolute melters over the last few weeks. So we thought we'd give those who are non-Patreons a little bit of a sample. Or if you are a Patreon and you want to experience them good moments again. Give us your favourite ever Patreon episode. Probably mine. I forgot about yours. If I'm being perfectly honest. I think it got the most praise as well. Oh, fucking hell. Well, I'm kidding, obviously.
18You're not the way. No, because it did. Favourite Patreon, Carlton Palmer. for me. Underrated is Mark Crossley's second one. You took the words off me tongue. The Frank Clark impression is up there with Cluffy. That might be controversial. I hear you people giving us a bit of stick but it is up there. I think you're right, Chris. Do the thingy. 40-0. That's a foot in this girl. Probably don't do it justice. It was pretty awkward when we were filming with Frank Clark. Yeah, I know. I kept seeing it and hearing it. While we're here, can we just say a massive thanks to the Patreons that have obviously listened to these episodes without you?
00It wouldn't be possible, would it? We wouldn't be here, would we? No. And everybody who's been to the live shows over the last few weeks. Ever. And there's some more coming, and we've got some more dates coming in October, November, December. Some exciting dates. Naked John. I think that's your new nickname. in. Prefer if we try and brush that under the carpet. We need a bloody big brush. By the way, if that ends up on Patreon, the fucking lots go in. If my dancing's going in the Patreon group, that's definitely got to go in the Patreon group. We need to keep it under, in-house. In-house. For the people who were at this live show, the people who got the pleasure or displeasure of seeing it, that's...
43Nah, it's stuck. Etched in the memory. Move on. So we've collated a few of the... What I feel... And George just had a flick as well to find the best patreon clips of the last 18 months two years right right well it's funny john that your episode is your favorite episode because that is the first clip of the patreon special episodes is it really what my take on the situation the your take on phil brown you that situation that you've told us about many many times or alluded to so many times yeah you move from Hull to Stoke, how it all unfolded. Yep. And we get it from your point of view. Perspective.
23And then we might have a little treat for after this clip. Phil's perspective by any chance? Maybe. I'm telling you now as I'm sat here, that is exactly how it transpired. Right. Well, let's hear you say it. So even though I'm the top goal scorer, he fetched Nicky Forster and Michael Bridges in. so I'm thinking he's half wanting shifters aside anyway both great lads by the way and what was the crap with Stoke coming in so so I'm not really playing but I'd score a world if I for all against Stoke you know that Robson Carno one from World Cup fucking better his life but that turned have I shown you you showed it last week on the 62 I think we were here look at this but like so I think we were back to Stoke that day and I think I played really well and I were actually off I were actually off we flew cold flew Thursday me agent phoned me again he said Stoke want to take you on loan for a mum what do you think I was like well to be fair I said I've been off the last few days rough but he says they want you to play Saturday I'm like fucking hell right sound yeah no bother I'll go for a month.
44Where's Ul and Stoke at the Buffington Championship? Yeah. Ul are fourth bottom, fifth bottom. Right. Stoke are sixth. Canal. It's a no-brainer, isn't it? Yeah. So, I went down to Stoke, played the first three games, but never scored. Right. So, I think I was subbed then somewhere. Anyway, I came on and scored. Then I was subbed, it was my favourite ever game, this, it was fucking class. Subbed away at West Brom, right? So, I was subbed, right so big mama got injured uh so i went on for mama scored we got somebody sent off i got subbed off
27i went left wing like you know ricardo were up front on his own i was left wing i was just making a big fucking tunnel down side at pit never took jimbo just running up and down i got dragged so i came like sub came on scored and got fucking subbed off all on for about 40 minutes the thing is knowing what you like normally you'd be fuming at that yeah but we got somebody sent off haven't we but even then like say if it happened at Preston or somewhere and they bring you off you're fuming aren't you yeah but I was playing left wing and I was doing a full call as I said I was just making a big rutting pitch clueless you'd have took you off we're fuming off we're fuming off at time yeah I've come on I've scored and that was the that other Saturday and we're playing at Bank Holiday Monday and obviously Mama couldn't play so I started the game and I scored again so I didn't score my first three I scored three and three thinking right we're flying here that'll probably take me till the end of the season here surely and then on the way on from the game phone rang Stoke I've called you back Is this your agent or Philip?
37me agent but in the meantime so this is after the first game i played for stoke so we obviously i've gone to hull in sixth to stoke in six all fourth fifth bottom so almost got beat after my first game for stoke and they did the radio interview after the game obviously with phil brown uh and they said right what what's happening with john parkin is top goal scorer just gone to stoke city who were in sixth, wear fourth, fifth bottom. Do you not think we're going to need him for the run-in? And this is when I lost my shit with Phil. He said, well, the thing is we need players who are committed to this football club or want to work hard for this football club and wear the shirt with pride and all this sort of stuff.
24A couple of lads who I played with, they phoned me and told me about this. So I'm like furious. So Monday morning I've rung Phil Brown up. I've only played one game for the store. rung Phil Brown up and says, what the fuck have you said on this radio interview? What do you mean, what do you mean? I says, well, three different people have phoned me and told me that you've said on the radio interview that you've let me go to Stoke because you need players who are committed to the football club, want to wear the shirt and want to work hard for Old City. He says, no, no, I never said that, I never said that.
55I says, well, tell you what, listen to the radio interview back and then phone me back and see what you said. He says, yeah, yeah, no problem, no problem. Anyway, never fucking, never run me back, never spoke to me. So I'm at Stoke now for four weeks, five weeks. Never said a thing. Because I'd obviously scored three and three, I get fucking called back after Bank Holiday Monday game. You've got to go back then, haven't you? Oh, I've got to go back, aye. Got to go back. Could you listen to the radio? Did you listen to it? No. three different people have phoned me and said this is what's I think one of the press guys might have even phoned me and said I'm weird what he said about you so what were it like when you went back hell I'm fucking raging because he's made me look like a cunt on radio as if I'm not wanting to play for all not wanting to work hard and all this when the season before I fucking screwed the goals to keep him up not just me it's the double barrel as well it's that and the fact that he's called him back when he's when he's coming back now because it looks bad on him yeah our old city strikers just scored 3-3 for Stoke who were 6th in the championship and were struggling so the lads all went out to training and I'm still fucking seething and I just fucking stormed over to him you know like me bumpy storm Oi you so I was over to him I says first words I went you're a fucking cunt you he went I says you know fucking exactly what you've done I'm pointing like you know exactly what you're fucking done you said that that about me on radio you said you'll listen to it you'll you'll you'll get back to me you never fucking for me I scored free and free for stop making you look like a cunt and now you've called me back I said you can fuck off it says right so he's asked so this is what we're gonna do now then I says well if you'll pick me right I'll play I'll play and try my best for this football club but I'm playing for them lads there and the fans here not for fucking you I'm not doing it for you and I don't even think I've played so just fetch me back just to fuck it up so why didn't he play you why didn't he play you then I don't know if it was because I'd countered him off or what in front of everybody I don't know if they all heard that but the Sommies yeah but you'll have told them wouldn't you the Sommies the Sommies stomp he can't he can't if that can you as a manager somebody coming over pointing at you but do you not think do you not think I've got a right to do that oh yeah but I mean from his self preservation from him and the rest of the lads he's even if he knows himself he's fucked up he's like well so that's what I mean that's why that's why I'm that's why I'm furious so get to the end of the summer obviously we've we all stay up yeah I think if Stoke just dropped out of the playoffs.
54If you were him, do you think he did the right thing? In what? Afterwards, not playing you and getting rid of you. I don't know. He must have just had to pick up a couple of results and not really need us. I might have been on the bench or what. I'm not saying need me as in I'm the fucking Messiah who's going to come in and save the ship. No, it's not an opportunity for asking. Well, I haven't seen him. Oh, yeah. I haven't seen him. I don't think I actually said all this on the podcast. did I not? No. I think I did. And I think he said something like well I had to stamp at me authority and make a mark if I remember right.
35So there we have it. Now it'll be interesting in this next clip now to see if you back them words up with Phil in the room you know you've got the opportunity haven't you really? Well I think he was quoted in saying if we ever get Phil on you're going to go on strike on the sick? You're not going to turn up? He did though, didn't he? He lost his voice. I went for the bigger picture now, thinking about your lads. Right, I'll tell you now, I still think I've been backed up in what Phil says. It was more just the pace, five minutes before Phil's arrival. Sweaty palms. Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen you so nervous.
12You couldn't sit still, could you, if you remember? Eyes were full of regret. Obviously, you've been given an inch and you're taking a mile, haven't you? I think we've got footage of you. Yeah, pacing Pacing Yeah Sweat Well, to be fair I'll be honest It were It were Like a A moment where you're thinking This could be a long afternoon This What am I going to What Has it all going to transpire What was the longer afternoon This is a genuine question The Phil Brown Or the Graham Wesley Well, with the Graham Wesley I knew That deep down There's no point Saying anything Because he'll Tie me up in knots He'll just He'll just chat and now it'll come to the point where I'm again thinking I'm in the wrong so well shall we get Phil out the way get Phil side of the story yeah here we go mr.
02Phil Brown hey are you aware of he was unhappy with his departure from all absolutely I wasn't the most complimentary if truth be known what was the main issue John we're the the radio interview that were the one that that got me can you recall it John yeah very well word for word I think I'd obviously gone on loan to Stoke and I think you'd said in an interview yeah I need players who are going to put a shift in for my team and basically fucking dug us out really so that's why I weren't happy I thought at the time I knew his talent I knew what he was capable of maybe you can win and get him a football for you but I think from minute one we sort of didn't see eye to eye I think it was when you said when you said you were fetching Steve Parking in what do you think to him I just said I think he's a cunt he went alright okay we know where we are we know where we are and I still brought him in to be I mean to be honest I knew John was a crowd favourite and as a manager you've got to think about what you're doing you know so I'm coming in trying to get bums on seats I'm coming in trying to tick boxes management is about that there's no doubt about you're a politician if you want to call it that and if I just completely dissed one of the favourites and got rid of him and and give it that way I'm on a sticky wicket straight away so I'm not saying it was me or you but it could have come down to that because John was such a favourite big strikers are goal scorers you know what they're like not always but you know what I mean Chris they can win games for you they can also get rid of you you know and it's the same You know, it just depends on the size of the player.
53And I don't mean size in terms of physicality. I mean the size of the player in terms of who supporters love to watch. And I've got to say it, I love to watch John, but I needed more. And that was the part that I think I made that decision that if I move him on, it's got to be permanent. And when the loan deal came along, I thought, how do I make this permanent? so I thought listen we're all big boys once you make it personal it's personal end of story and I had to choose that line and that's the line I chose Was there much of a backlash then you're worried about upsetting the fan base and stuff?
30It depends on what you're replacing with Chris you know if you're talking about I'm talking about high press you know the modern day game I'm not saying I started the modern day game or anything like that but I'm just saying the modern day game I thought was all about putting the press on from the front and funnily you mentioned Steve. Steve for me and Brian Horton were more experienced than I was. Steve had 350 games as a manager himself, Brian Horton over 1 ,000 and I'm bringing backroom staff in like that, eventually, you know, eventually piecing it all together. But I wanted to put a press on and I didn't think John could do that.
09I think the thing was Stoke were in like sixth and we were like fourth, fifth bottom so I think that's why they ask you a question. Why have you let John Parker go to Stoke who are in sixth and we're struggling at the bottom? I think that's what they... And the hard part of letting anybody go like that to a club that's doing okay is that can get you the sack. So it was a big decision for me as well, regardless of what we're doing sitting here. I'm letting a good player go. I'm letting a player who can, one of the best left foots I've seen for a striker, but again didn't tick the box that I wanted, which was the press.
43and that was the only reason apart from the personal stuff. Who did you replace him with? I'm trying to think now. Did you face Dean Owen? Dean Winnis wasn't immediate, you know. I was thinking about this the other day. We had about, I played a 4-3-3 and the one down the middle, sometimes with Maka, sometimes with, there was about two or three but it was just legs, energy. So there wasn't anybody per se, you know, there wasn't one player that I brought in. Even a team, he'd stick a Nicky Barmy down there. And I was saying play a false name, but Nicky could get about the place, even at 33, 34. Eventually bringing Dean Winders in again.
22Again, you're talking politics. You know, you're ticking enough boxes there. But Dean was what, 35, 36? No, 38, I think. Was he? 37, 38. When I brought him back. Well, he was playing fairly regular at Bradford at the time. So another reason why I brought him back in. You said you'd get on. It was just that one interview, in that one situation. I used to laugh when I heard John because he could tell a story, he could tell a joke. But he'd probably have pie and chips in front of him, you know? And I was like, John, come on, can we just do that with a bowl of pasta? It's a bit much for breakfast, that.
02So, yeah, well, it's there for everyone to hear. I think we can safely say, yeah, you shit your pants. That's what I'd like to see what people think about it. write a message in saying, if I shit my pants really, I'll just show you all being dickheads. And Phil, did you say he apologised? Or he said he made a mistake? No, I don't think he said he made a mistake, but I think he... gave his reasons for doing what he did. And do you understand them reasons now? It was like an intervention, really. You know, like getting a... like couples therapy. You know, if you're thinking of splitting up and then it's all shit sit the far and you're a dick.
42I understand his thing. I really enjoyed it, put it that way. I understand his ideas with it, but obviously it's still not nice when you're the dick at the other end of it. Next one is quite a recent one, isn't it? Richard Lee. Richard Lee. One of my favourites is because I didn't know about really agencies and all this sort of stuff. I think it was an education for us, this one. Yeah, it was. Obviously played for Watford, played for Blackburn. didn't make that many appearances football wise but Super Agent it's a good tag in it yeah the old Super Agent and remember you you called him Super Agent in the episode and he like he like we all like to be we all like to be loved don't we and when you're giving her when you're egos but a little ball tickle but it was good because he went into detail I wasn't I wasn't sure how he was going how much he was going to tell us you know especially deadline day how it all works and it's like just a big game of chess isn't it yeah I just imagine him in his room, though, in his office.
40You know, deadline day. I think I even mentioned headset on. Multiple screens. Who's going with you? Phone's going. Left, right, set. Bluetooth headset. You know, messages going everywhere. Even a fax machine. I'll have to get back to the Harrys on the phone. Imagine Chris as an agent. You'd be getting players the wrong move. You know what I mean? Like ringing the wrong manager for the wrong player and that. I like Peter on the wing. Yeah, drive to Glasgow. go, why I'm signing for fucking QPR? Peter on a wig, he signed for Horwich FC. I said, Norwich, you dickhead. And this would happen, the battery.
16Your battery would definitely be gone. Oh, the battery would be gone. Yeah. I'd need one of them battery packs. Yeah. Still, we have a fax machine. But a great insight for me, that. I had the same agent for my whole career, and my contracts were pretty simple. Wage, appearance money, goal bonus, promotion bonus, relegation bonus. Pretty much that was it. What's the most outrageous thing a club's offered someone to get the deal off the line? You know, like when I'm thinking of Gaza. When Gaza went to Latswood, did they not offer him something obscure? Fishing rod. Yeah, I think so, yeah. You know, like, oh, fuck it, we'll chuck a, I don't know, a gold lion in for your garden. There was something ridiculous like that, I'm sure it were. Do you know what you tend to find?
09We had it in January, won't name the club, won't name the player, but where there was a particular player that all of a sudden became a really, like, hot prospect on January because he was allowed to leave the club he was at for next to nothing and it just so happened on deadline day. There was a few bits of movement that happened unexpectedly, but this one client was perfectly positioned where, you know, they could get him on a perm which is also a big thing because you don't want to use up a loan slot a lot of the time so it's like you could get him on a perm that could free up a loan spot elsewhere so suddenly there was like three four clubs that was suddenly chasing after this one player and as the day progressed and i made on deadline day i actually counted them the next day because i thought i do wonder i made 228 calls on deadline day which for this one player no for one day about half were on that one player because it was from club to club to club and the thing was it was kind of the lad was killing me a bit because i was like you need to make a decision at some point like we're getting later in the day the deadline's coming up but obviously by him waiting and waiting these clubs kept coming back and kept getting higher and by the end of the day like the initial offer that he got it was several times more but of course several times but because it was only a short-term deal you can imagine as well where they're not even thinking about the numbers because effectively all they're thinking is well we only need them from january to june so you know even if we break our pay structure if we can get that permit yeah play a little bit more freezes up for a loan spot elsewhere and it might be that then for this particular player all of the clubs then knew if they could bring him in they had other loans ready to come in so he was like a big part of the jigsaw just in the perfect position you can imagine then i and i you know we live like we live it we love it but we also live it where i'm then thinking it's quite difficult because i'm like you know if you wanted to be as open and transparent with these four clubs i'm like right his head's here at the moment he hasn't got an answer for you yet and you can imagine it gets to a point where i'm having to go to the client but you've got to give me an answer now because if whatever you say it doesn't matter but then the other three clubs i need to let them know now otherwise they're going to be left in the lurch and we're running out of time and then anyway he made his decision and then the other three acted quickly and we actually helped the other three as well with other goalkeepers so it all worked out but honestly I didn't well for about three days I just slept for three days Any examples of where you say if there's an 11 o 'clock deadline and you're like this is going to be touch and go this to get it over and you've had to well you went was it a fax machine or something you had to go and find a a library I had my one example and this was a few years ago actually but I had I'll name the two lads it was Dylan Phillips going to Cardiff and we had Andy Fisher going to MK both at the same time I'd gone with Dylan to Cardiff and Fish was getting done but I just remember like it was about it must have been a 5pm deadline it was about 10 to 5 and I was waiting for this contract to come through on my phone then I didn't even realise suddenly checked I had 1 % battery I just remember running around the Cardiff stadium like I need a charger I can need a charger imagine if my phone died and I couldn't actually sign the deal because and anyway luckily I literally I was like crouched in the corner to do it on my phone and we got it done with about a minute or two to spare and but again it's it's a bit now as well like you know as much as i say about my nerves when i played like obviously the buzz you get when you win etc it is the closest thing now like it is such a buzz over here i've got i've got my 12 screens so i have like 12 games on at a time and but when you're watching one of the lads that you've kind of worked with for a number of years big game about a few this season like lads have been playing the brandon austin coming through at spurs like making his debut doing really well.
21Christian Walton having some great games for Ipswich. Some have had nine or ten starting in the championship most weeks. I love it. It's so nice when you see him have a big game and that chat with him afterwards is probably the closest thing now that I can get to that kind of buzz of winning a game. Did you just see you've got 12 screens in your house? Oh, yeah, yeah. I was just going to say I'm just imagining you're in a betting shop in Vegas. You know, we're like off the race in there dogs from camels in the lot. I went around the... Well, I was just going to ask... The fucking battle camels over here.
56I was just going to ask, because it might be a silly question, but I'm interested to know what your setup is for deadline week, let's say. Yeah. Like, I'm imagining a headset on, everything that you need, get your carbs there, your electrolytes for the day. Yeah. All the coals flying in. Definitely electrolytes. Yeah. Yeah. And that's one of the things. So when I first moved here, I didn't tell anyone for a year. So I kept it secret because I stayed on my UK number. I worked UK hours. So no one knew that I was six. I didn't want them to think I'm in Dubai and I've switched off or what have you.
29So after about a year, I started telling people. One of the best things about living here is the time difference. So it's three hours now, but it's four hours in the winter. So what that means, I get up at six in the morning here. It's two in the morning in England. So it means I've got that quiet time, the first four or five hours of the day, where I try and get a workout in when I can. And then I'll sit behind my desk and I'll put my phone on airplane mode and I'll send 150 messages just to start the day. And that's almost like, right, we're off. Take it off airplane mode. They all send. And then it's just fielding calls for the whole day.
59And I basically block out. So I sort of use the word sacrifice. But May, June, July, August and January, in particular, December as well. Sort of six months that are hectic. And then you've got six months are a bit more just ticking over, watching games, speaking to lads. But no, the summer months is just, yeah, I barely leave the house. it's just constant because there's always something going on and you've got to be quick as well like it's not too the summer window is better because it's longer like January can be a nightmare because it's just so condensed and you miss a call you know they're panicking they might make another call so it's it is that sort of feeling of anxiousness that I cannot miss a call or when you're on a call and I'll get this a lot when I'll be on a call and someone's chatting away and I've had four missed calls while I'm on that call and you're like I need to get back to him bring you back yeah let's ring your back message can i call you later oh god you fucking can't no but see like on that i always you know when you're explaining the we've got the player and there's four clubs blah blah blah i always used to think a club would miss out on a player like with three minutes to go and i just think you've had a whole january to sort of this shit out yeah and that's the jan in particular like i don't know what the percentage is i'd guess 60 70 percent happens on the final day and it's it's frustrating at the same time i understand it now where you know it starts off where you know one team's here one team's here and that will gradually move closer but of course when you've got a deadline it has to get done or not so it's it's like anything in it's like you're advising for an exam at school you do it the night before like you don't do it three weeks before and it feels a bit the same with the windows where it's a bit different in the summer because you'll get a lot that want their teams in place for pre-season even that i think the window finishes too late i can't understand why it finishes is end of August, start of September because the season's already underway.
42But in the summer at least, you've got a longer period of time. It's not quite as stressful. A lot will get done in May, June and then you kind of find it ticks over in July and then August gets busy again. A handsome fella as well. I'm a bit of a finish on that. Yeah, beautiful. Very handsome man. There was definitely chemistry between Chris and Richard. Yes, I would agree. Beautiful. I'd like to be an agent. Well, I don't think it'd be a good one, but I'd like... Do you know what I mean? I think he'd be barbaric. If I'm perfectly honest. Did you speak to some... Oh, no, I forgot. Yeah. Did you speak to Harry Redknapp?
13Yeah, I did. Yeah, yeah. Harry, did my agent speak to you? No. No one ever heard of him. I just want them moments, though. Like I said, with the screens and the coffee and the headset on. You know them... Jeremy Maguire. Jerry Maguire. Jeremy. Do you know what I mean? He's just got Jeremy a move. As opposed to getting Jerry one. I just want the... You want the money? You want the... You can't handle the money. Or the truth. no that's a different film altogether he's talking let's move on yeah move on fucking useless Curtis Davies another underrated episode yeah yes and we have heard a little bit about the Brian Robson trips hollow legs yeah Budweiser no pisses in 24 hours but Curtis tells a good one doesn't he yeah it's I think it's the best insight we've had to them.
09On Brian's. Yeah. Was that the year that Brian Robson took everyone to Florida? No, so we went to Dubai. So the demise of our season, basically, this was. So I think it was either an international break or one of those FA Cup weekends where you've been knocked out. We've planned this trip, like say two, three weeks before it happens. Robo calls us all into a meeting, right, this is the trip, lads. this is the itinerary. He goes, right, so here we go. Monday morning doing this afternoon, doing that. Tuesday, bit of a lighter session, but pool, gym, blah, blah, blah. It goes through all the days and it's like, it's like one day that's free.
54We're like, we're all looking at each other thinking, fucking hell, like what the fuck is going on? He goes, right, so here's a printout. He goes, give it up to your missus and fuck it off because we're not doing fuck all. and he's like, whoa, fuck it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's one of them. So like, you got us, bro. You got us. Oh, you bastard. Yeah, you got us. But like, so we're all there like, but it was like, fuck off. That's brilliant. But he goes, he said like take, cause printed headed like West Brom heading on it. This is the itinerary to give to your missus so she knows when to call you and all that kind of stuff.
29And literally did fuck all. But it was like, so, and I think someone else told the story. I listened to one recently where someone else told the story, but so basically we lost to Fulham. So literally we're flying from London on a Sunday, played Fulham on the Saturday. Again, a game we needed to try and get points from, blah, blah, blah, because they were lower down the league. Lost 6-1. I think, what's his name? He's got a first name and his surname. Little John. Collins. Collins John. Little John. That's it. Collins John. John Collins. Small guy. Yeah, so Collins John, he scored a hat-trick that day as well.
02But it was one of them games where, again when you're defending you always say this but they had seven shots they scored six goals so maybe blame pop it on hands but i don't know um but yeah but basically we've had that result and then we're like we're going to dubai so it's like by the time we get to dubai with the flight and the time difference it's um i think so we get to the hotel it's about two o 'clock in the morning and back then dubai wasn't a 24 7 type place it was like obviously still quite getting into western culture and the drinking and the tourism so we're in the reception the gaffer goes everyone in the bar just have just come and have one everyone in the bar it's literally everyone i don't drink beer but it's like fuck it i love one it's the gaffer i'm there holding on to this warm bud like sipping it every fucking five minutes and then um he he basically goes right um the guy comes over it's about half two at this time now we've all been there he's like um hello sir uh can we have one last order please before we uh close the bar robbo's looked around didn't count up okay um yeah can we have 35 buds and 40 heinekens please the guys looked at him he's gone okay sir he goes i want 35 buds and 40 heinekens like robo's dead serious like not budging the guy goes uh sorry sir I meant like one one per per oh fuck this so Robbo goes off goes to his room and just gets blotto in his room so this is considering this is at two half two two forty five like because the drinking stops at three o 'clock have to like have to basically clear the bar almost because it's like so by drinking law goes to his room gets blotto in his room in a mini bar bang next morning Jono Greening went down and he's gone down just for a walk you know you wake up Body clocks all over the shop, gone for a walk.
55Looks over, fucking goes to walk down the beach. Is that the gaffer? Gaffer's at the pool bar, right? At fucking eight o 'clock. Eight o 'clock in the pool bar, he sees Greens. He's like, Greens! Come over, come over, gets him over. Gaffer's already got a beer in his hand, blah, blah. He's like, come on, Greens, what are you drinking? What are you drinking? He goes, I'll have a Coke, please. He's like, Bud or Heineken? And then I think Greens melted. And he's like, oh, oh, bud. So Greenzie's there fucking drinking with a gaffer in the morning, like from eight o 'clock. So by the time we all start making our way down, cause we're actually, even though they said we're going to do fuck all, the fitness coach, Richie was quite professional.
Read the full transcript
36He said, we just want to have a little jog on the beach to get the flight out of your legs. It's like, Greenzie's drinking with a gaffer. We're not all down yet. We'd have to be down at like midday or whatever. By the time we come down, Greenzie's fucking all overshot with a gaffer and the gaffer hasn't moved. And then we go and do the run. We come back, gaffer's still there. you go fucking back to your room get changed whatever Guffer's still there telling you he was there from 8 until about whenever the pool bar closed 8 o 'clock 8 to 8 did not move and was just steady slurp did not move like hollow legs is this pool bar in the pool?
11in the pool yeah oh it's yeah so I think I think fishing in the pool isn't it 100 % fishing in the pool I wouldn't like to say about a legend I'd like to think he could hold it for 12 hours because he's that good. He probably lost his arse at all. He's got that strong core he can hold it for 12 hours but I think after the, what were you saying? Four pints an hour at minimum for fucking 12 hours. Yeah. And is he slurring? No. I'm telling you, if you see him from the first one to the last one, I didn't see a difference. Yeah, I bet the lads were half keeping out the way of the pool in fear of the gaffer dragging them in for a drink.
51I don't go out there, the gaffer's out there. Do I help from the shop? No, I'm all right, no, I'm not going to shop. The gaffer will color us, man. But it was like that with like, from when he played, they said that you used to be able to go play, so you could go and piss up and play. But obviously as a manager, you're like, well, that's one thing. But we had the races once and we went to, I can't remember Newbury races or something like that. Basically the players split off. We went off with the players and the staff went off and had a few drinks somewhere else. But the gaffer had a good skin fall that day.
18next day we're in but we're only just having a bit of a light jog and the gaffer goes right lads listen we're only gonna do a light jog but just basically stay at my pace gaffer like at the time was about like whatever 50 odd hadn't played for years obviously dodgy knees took the run it's like I'm 20 years old and I'm fit but off the back of I didn't drink a lot and all that kind of thing I'm having to have a good clip to keep up with him like it wasn't ridiculous but I mean I'm having to have a clip to keep up with him when I thought I was just gonna be a light jog I'm like so you And when you come off it, you're like, I've actually had a fucking good sweat on there.
50And this is like Robert, he's 50 years old. So you understand why he was like he was because he got away with it because he was that fit. And like I say, he's 50, he's not playing anything. His knees weren't great. And he's like at the front, I'm a 20 year old lad, one of the fittest in the team. And I'm having to have a clip to keep up with him from a cool down, from a night out. Would you like him as your manager, Brian? Yeah, I think I would. Yeah, I think I would. No. Yeah, I would. I really would yeah I was going to say not because of the drinking bit but I think yeah I really would definitely I thought you'd need he'd need his hat off you because 100 % don't do Brian if you're listening no defamation of character but he definitely pisses in the pool the same drink as well the same I couldn't you see you've got to even by hour four I'm mixing it up you've got to get a cocktail in haven't you I don't even think it's the nicest drink to drink is it Budweiser's no former manager next Mr Peter Grant hell of a player by the way yeah he was before our time wasn't he but very well spoke of Canio stuff is always a winner see I'm still on the fence with whether he's an absolute dickhead or sound the Canio so we just get straight in with it yeah it's a good story isn't it at one stage he thought he'd agreed to take David Gianola the David Gianola one fell through because Newcastle coming at the last moment and we end up getting Paulo it was a wonderful sign and built for Celtic you know people as I'm talking about as a player people talk about his personality different things he does now in Italy or whatever but for me he was my roommate because that was bizarre because Tommy put me in that's one thing I'll never forgive Tommy for it came from AC Milan he just won the league where AC Milan scored on the last day they'd won the league earlier because that's what You had to tell him some days.
46So some days in training, he'd complain about the players and throw his hands up in the air. And I'd be like, hold on a minute. You were at AC Milan, Juventus, da-da-da-da-da-da, but you were a sub there. Yes. We're no Franco, we're AC Maldini and whatever. Sometimes you've got to be an acceptance. So you had to put it in his place some days, you know. A brilliant guy, brilliant trainer, fitness, strong as I know, strongest player I've ever seen, ever. so Tommy go back to Tommy, Tommy says to him you need to go in, because you need to tell him about Celtic I just look at him like, I need to tell him about Celtic he can't speak English and I can't speak English and I'm going to talk to him about Celtic how am I going to explain that to him, you know Celtic so that's fine in me and my broken English Paul I number 6 you number 7 we're in room treble one or whatever he's looking at me I said you go up the stair and I'm handing my bag you take my bag I'm talking like this, this is my perfect Italian you take my bag and he's sort of looking at me and I get the training kit this is where I'm first day so I'll get six and seven so he goes away up, so I'm waiting a wee while nearly mocking, God rest him nearly says right son you're in with the canio I was like, oh, the best.
13I left the gear, six and so on, so about 10 minutes, 15 minutes later I got. So, you know when you get into a hotel room, predominantly toilets are on the right or the left as soon as you go in. So, I'm struggling with the gear at the door. Next thing, I've unlocked the door and I've walked. I've just went like to my left-hand side. Shaving foam, right down the front, but all the way down, right down, nearing off to his toes standing with a shaver put his legs up on the sink and I'm thinking bear in mind I don't have a toilet bag at this time because no other day we didn't have a toilet bag you were scared to have anything like that and I'm thinking right what is he doing so he's shaving his body then he's going further down and he's shaving this and I'm thinking right how do I get back out of this room this is what I'm thinking in my head so I put his gear down on the bed but I lift my bag and put my gear into my bag and I'm like I'm off, I'm out so I went down the stairs I went ho ho gaffer no fucking chance I'm agging in there he's like what are you talking about he's fucking heavy it's up there shaving maybe shaving before training I said no his face I said everywhere apart from his face and he's like looking at me Tommy starts laughing you know and I'm like no it might be funny to you I said no what you mean I said no no no he said no you're in with him you need to get in with him da da da and I get back up and so I'm like to him Bowler why why are you shaving I'm thinking this is weird I've never seen this before a man shaving his body because at that time our boys didn't shave I was a hairy ass Scotsman you know what I mean you know I'm like what's going on and he's like looking at me and he's thinking and I'm saying something different to him and he's like, no, no, as if I was trying to say he was something else.
11You know what I'm saying? Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. And I'm thinking, and he's like, no, no, no, he's saying, aerodynamic.
23I'm thinking, he can't speak English, but he's saying aerodynamic. He's like, aerodynamic, no, no, and he's laughing and killing himself laughing, but this was my first meeting with him. So, all of a sudden, and he brings his book out and all this, didn't he? And he says, my best friend, Peter, and all this. But what had happened was, at the end of this trip, they take you a sort of barbecue at the end of the trip. So we'd been there for about three weeks. But this place was a fishing village we were in. So the table was really long. Like, they had the table really long. But there's a fish, but it was like a shark.
57No, I genuinely mean a shark. I think it was a shark, you know? So the head's still on it. The tail nut's still on it. You can see the fins, but it's sliced right open. But it's got all the prawns and that sitting in it. So I can eat prawns, but I can't eat them out with something like that. Any fish, I don't like my eyes or that. So that's not for me. Well, that's your prawn. Head and tail's got to be off and the prawns have got to be peeled. You know, so all these things have got to be off. So I never thought of any of it. Get back. Running, whatever. Say my prayers before I go to bed. And it was like the Waltons.
30You're too young to remember the Waltons. Good night, John boy. and everybody used to shout goodnight to each other. So I used to say to him before I went to sleep, right, I'm going to say my prayers. Shut up now. Is this a light's going out? You're not going to ask me anything. You know, because he was a blether. I was a blether, but he was a blether. So we used to cut a truce at a certain time. Right, that's it. No music, no nothing. Put the lights off. I was like, aye. But I could just look at him. There was some, no, right? I don't know. I said, so you sure everyone's okay? Yeah, yeah, Peter, no problem.
02that's fine so I right get down so he goes down and I put it like it's like I'm sorry it's like talk to a kid get down so he goes down and he turns his back and whatever so I'm sitting and then all of a sudden I finish so I finish what I'm doing get down just put my foot in and I
23the big shark's head's in my bed but the biggest thing so I didn't know this at the time so as I put my foot in I pulled it. All I couldn't see, this big head with the eyes, and whatever, in my bed. I couldn't even notice, because I always used to put a pillow down the bottom. I thought it was a pillow. Didn't even think twice. He's put a shark's head in our bed. But he's that quick. He's up. He's out the door. He's away. I'm running after him, throwing a fire extinguisher. Everybody's out. There's a commotion. I'm trying to help him. I mean, I'm not spraying it. I'm throwing it. So the manager, I've gone.
58You know, I'm thinking, he's got eyes. You're looking at me from the bottom of the bed. My foot up to the bottom of the bed. Oh, I'm winning his move. I'm right in. You know, and I'm thinking, this is crazy. So he's lying, he's hyperventilating, and he sees this in his book and all that, you know, he says, I'm hyperventilating. He said, but he writes about it. So I've read it with the players, I'm killing it. So that was funny, it was really funny. Don't get me wrong, it was hilarious. And everybody's laughing, because you're thinking of the Italians, with the horse's head, he'd put a shark's head.
27You know, so he was, writes about it in his book. So everybody thinks I've got this phobia about fish now. I love fish. As long as there's no eyes, no tie-in. Cooked. And he's worried about this. So everywhere I went, people used to be throwing fish to me. But I didn't know why this was happening. But I didn't know he'd brought a book out. And he'd wrote this in his book, my best friend there. But it was bizarre like that. We could be sitting here now and we went back to his house night one night we Simon Don remember Simon that played at Sheffield Wednesday for a little while Simon played at Celtic um me and Simon went back to his house on a Sunday night he's going to get his wife up we'd been off on the Monday first time I got a Monday off or something because it must have been because I never went out of training so it was a Sunday I always remember we went for a Chinese group of players and we're going back to his the two of us went back to his we had a carry out whatever as in beer big telly on he said I go and get Elizabeta up that's his wife he said I go and get her up.
27He said, make us tea. And I'm laughing, I will kill you if you go and wake her. He said, you don't wake anybody, we'll get something. So we're sitting down. Next thing, he takes his top off. He's like an Adonis, as I say. So it's unbelievable. Television's on. Next thing, he's take that on, but it's a karaoke version and all of this he does. So the birds are at the bottom. So we're sitting having a drink. Next thing, Sid's got his top off. I'm thinking, let's get on here. You know, we're having a couple of drinks. the two of them start singing, don't they? They were trying to get me on the floor to sing, so I'm sitting there, I'm having a laugh.
01But I'm thinking, this is weird. This is Nick Atti, you know, and he's killing himself and he's loving it, he's thinking this is brilliant. But I tell you, right, look, I need to go to the toilet. I've turned like this to go to the toilet. I see a plant pot, you know, and it's got a red light, and it's all went like that, like an alarm, but I think that's in a bizarre position. So, thankfully enough, I'm compass-men or something. oh, what's that? oh, nothing, nothing fucking take me take me take me and he thinks this is hilarious I was like, what is that? I'm going to kill you he'd sit around there singing you know, giving it Yahoo hopeless, I've got the worst voice ever hopeless, I'm like, what are you fucking doing?
50oh, no, you can't do that no, I know I send back to my friends on the tilly They will think this is brilliant. I don't care what they think. That's no going back. So that was fine. Fucking falling. Two weeks later, working down for a European game. He said, I bring the video to put on the bus to show the gaffer. You put that on the window to show the gaffer, you won't be fit to play. He's like, show the gaffer. But this was the sort of things. It was just weird. But an unbelievable player who was built to play for Celtic. Entertainer. I'd like to think when he's running down Corridor, he's got his little shorts on.
32The old school ones, the top off. But Grant, he tells a lot about them. There's the flipping karaoke, and he's filming himself the karaoke. Yeah, I didn't have him down as a bruner. And he's a rookie, man. Yeah. Getting frustrated when he signed for Celtic because they weren't as good as the AC Milan players. Yeah. So I think you're right, John. I don't think it can work out whether he's an absolute dick or right. Yeah. Peter speaks really well of him, doesn't he? Proper good parts. Yeah. But it's a bad start for me, if you remember the hair stall. Maybe don't play that one. Where's the perfect place you could segue from, from a fish head?
17A pig's head. Yeah. So we've got Matthew Everington next.

Discover it all in Nordstrom stores and at Nordstrom.com. were you at the training ground when did someone put a pig's head in Ken Wynn's locker yeah me oh fucking hell it's an exclusive have you not heard the story no I've heard the story but I never knew who the perpetrator was well I did it accidentally so what happened was I was just taking it home that night we were having a spit roast I got the wrong locker it didn't originate from me it got put in my locker first right So, Johnny Walters, we were such a tight group of lads that we used to play pranks on each other all the time, but it kind of spiralled into this where it got too much and it got out of hand.
02I'll give you an example. Walters used to put DP in Crouchy's slips every morning and Crouchy was that dumb that he wouldn't even check them before he put them on and he'd put them on and he'd be on fire. Childish and petty, but very effective. Yeah, and Walters would do all these kind of things, Johnny Walters. so anyway I thought it's time to get him back he's winding everyone up so he's brought this rascal jacket in new jacket that he thinks he looks the nuts in and it was awful so every morning like clockwork Hufi would go to the cubicle and empty his bowels and he'd leave it in there sometimes very efficient then German nine o 'clock job done but sometimes he'd leave it in there because it stunk that much just to wind everybody up.
47And he did this one morning and Walt has come in. He's gone into the gym. He spent half his life in the gym, ultimate professional Waltz. And I just got his jacket and stuffed it down the toilet where Hoopie had emptied his bowels thinking... Because he'd been doing things and totting up and totting up. I thought I'd had enough. So anyway, he's come back and I never declared it. Anyway, I think he's found out it's me. But he's waited. He's been quite cute with it. He's waited five, six weeks. and anyway we're about to go out to training and God this is unbelievable this Waltz and Hufy have come out late and they never used to do that they'd be first out and we're doing our lap around the pitch and then we're having a little stretch and we're carrying on doing a lap and they've come out loud and thinking don't ring right that something's going on here anyway got on with training didn't think about it again and then we finished training and again Waltz is running from training.
42Again, never does that. I would always be out doing extras, et cetera. So I followed him in thinking there's something up here. He's just sitting there. So it's me and him in the changing room and he's just looking at me and laughing. And I'm like, what are you laughing at? Anyway, I've gone to my locker. Check your phone. There's literally a pig's head in my locker wrapped up in my clothes. And fish guts everywhere in my wash bag. The lot. And it was the most horrific thing and I've gone right I've tried to digest it and I've seen Red Mist like logical logically thinking I should think it's Johnny Waters because he's there laughing at me I've gone who's done that and he's not declared it so I'm thinking who else plays these pranks etc I've just now got in my head it's Glenn Whelan now Glenn Whelan changed two up from me on my side on the bench and Ken Kenwin was next to him in the third one alongside that.
41So my head's just told me it's Wheelock straight away. I've seen Red Mist. I've wrapped all Wheelock's clothes up in this pig's head, chucked all the fish guts back in his locker. Wheelock's still out training. That's what I thought. I've put it in Kenwin's. Now, that's a big mistake because Kenwin's got his religious beliefs, et cetera. I genuinely didn't think it was Kenwin's locker. I thought it was Wheelock's. so anyway now Waltz is thinking this is absolutely brilliant he's gone out into the treatment room I'm going to Waltz what's happened he's still not told me it's him I didn't I've not realised I put it in Kenwin's locker I've gone in to do my gym work I've come back out and everything has just gone mental so Wheelo doesn't know anything that's gone on at this point he's completely innocent in all this nothing's in his locker apart from me that I think he's obviously put it in mine.
36Kenwin's now got a brick from the car park, thinking it's Glenn Whelan again for some reason, and put it through his windscreen. Of the car? Of the car. Right? So now I've gone out, I'm having my lunch, thinking it's Whelow, still thinking it's Whelow. Me and Crouchy are about to get on the train to London with a day off the next day, so we've got the train from the station to Euston. And Wheelock's called me, literally swearing down the phone in his broad Dublin accent. What's going on? What's going on? What's going on? He goes, I've had a brick through my window. I said, I don't know, Wheelock.
17What has gone on? He goes, you'd wrap my clothes up in pig's head and fish guts, etc. He goes, I hadn't done nothing. I said, who did it then? He said, it's Johnny Walters. Waltz. I've gone, now Kenwin thinks it's me because you've wrapped his clothes up anyway. Worked the way back. Wheelock's completely innocent. he's had a brick put through his windscreen. Him and Wheelock got done two weeks wages. Who, Walters? Sorry, Kenwin got done two weeks wages, right? Waltz didn't get touched, he was one of the favourites. I didn't get touched, one of the favourites. I've never been so enthralled in a story for six years of doing this podcast.
54So did you have to have a talk with Kenwin? I apologise to Kenwin, but I genuinely thought I was getting Glenn Whelan's locker. I literally, I was seeing red. Kenwin all right? No, I don't think he was. I think he's come out recently and said that it was like an infringement on his beliefs, et cetera. But it genuinely, it was a genuine mistake. He's seen the size of Kenwin. I've never seen him. The day after your day off, I think, were you nervous going in? Yeah, no, I just, I apologise to him straight away. I mean, I could just imagine walking in. He's got away with murder, isn't he? He's got away with murder.
31I can just imagine coming in during the melee though. There's a pig's head in me locker. Well, I've not put it in there, but somebody's put it in there. That pig's in there and next minute there's a brick for a window. See, that's not even really Wheelock's sort of crack, is it? Wheelock used to muck about a bit, but yeah, not to that extent. But I can't believe I did not clock it was Walt straight away. What am I doing? I just thought it was Wheelock because we used to always wind each other up a little bit and maybe something had happened a day or two before but yeah that was crazy it's hard you know when you smash a window as well on your car there's glass everywhere for ages isn't there you know when you were there they're still finding glass weeks later that is brilliant that see I genuinely thought that well I thought that Glenn had put it in I'd heard that Glenn had put it in but obviously the story transpired Willow just really innocent few people thought Glenn put it in
31that's fucking so TP done him two weeks well I might be exaggerating there two weeks but I think there was a fine involved I think there was a fine involved because it was obviously vandalism but you could say vandalism wrapping your clothes up in where did you get a pig's head from I don't know you'd have to ask him that can I get a couple of pieces of gammon 8th Street bit of bacon chucking head in chucking head in and all mate that's a good question Just a locker to get that way. It's going to extremes, isn't it, to be fair? Yeah, I mean, yeah, he's put a lot of thought into that, hasn't he?
03I've seen Damien Delaney slash four tyres on a car before for a prank with a pretending to be a bird and stitch him up with that. Oh, really? But that's aggression, that, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah, it was... Any more sort of prank stories? I like them. That's the one that sticks out. All the little ones, like you said, the DP and the slips and stuff like that, there was plenty that went on. But yeah. So you're basically just out of Crouch, you've been thick as well here, aren't you? With his religion, I can understand why he's lost his shit. Yeah. And in that situation, you'd think that somebody's done it on purpose because of that, wouldn't you?
49But it would be obviously a terrible mistake. but same as I say this is it's going beyond football crack in his mind the thing is he's a big piece of kit isn't he so if the brick goes through your window you've got to do something haven't you yeah big Kenwin I'd say he's one of the ones I reckon in people in football who I'd not like to fight I reckon Kenwin could be up there you think yeah big strong fit agile yeah yeah them somersaults imagine doing somersault on you knackered needless but well we hope you enjoyed the the Patreon sort of recap thing it's first time we've done it we'll see how it goes I think we've done it before have we?
