And it was a shit time for everybody that season.

2:16And I think he looked like he just had enough. And speaking to him, I think he had. But he came and he gave us his all. He left the owl out on the pitch. Yeah. I think it took him a little bit to get going. Bear with him. Yeah. Yeah, because after a couple of mints, we gave him a couple of mints, didn't his English seem to get better. Yeah, I don't know. But once he gets going, it's brilliant. Played in a World Cup. well he didn't play in the World Cup final he was in the World Cup squad we played in the same amount of World Cup finals but we've not been in the World Cup final squad but that one season at Wigan the Tottenham stint and the World Cup double Tottenham stint class man brilliant way to start I still can't believe Roy Keane signed in me why?

3:03because of all the Roy Keane type players he got gloves on did he wear tights? a snood I've seen him in the schnood yeah you know like that Roy's a short sleeve fucking trousers up shorts up he was rapid though and then he parked in his parking spot but we'll let him let him tell us about that do us a fair just set another one of them things off to do this here but no thanks for sticking with us for eight years eight years Patreons are still out every fortnight if you're not on board yeah get involved and a special mention before we get Pascal in to O 'Neill Sportswear are very, very, very good friends who have continued to support us through numerous series and the shirts are available now if you want to click on the link in the description.

3:52Eight years. Think we'll get another eight out of the job. With a huff, that, innit? It's with a huff. Has it been a slap for you, Chris? Dealing with me and him. Hard work. Both cheeks are purple. You have swum the channel meeting me and him and Matty. you have swam the channel no one here thank us though Chris hey honestly the pleasure's been all ours that's what we're here for do you think you've changed as a person probably for the worst more defensive more defensive Pascal Chimbonda Pascal Chimbonda we're not we're not going down that route

4:31quick start on your managerial career yeah Skimmersdale there's a rumour That you got a touchline ban and you managed to get round it, is that right?

4:44Pascal Chimbonda:No, I get a touch ban because I go protect my player on the pitch because I think it's a big fight. I was starting on the pitch and I just went to the pitch. Airmakers? No, I didn't do anything bad, you know. And just because I went on the pitch and I didn't know, you know, because low league, you know, it's kind of things you can do. And I didn't know. And I just go protect my player. What, and you got a ban for us? Yeah, I get like four game ban for. So the rumour is that you registered yourself as a player so that you didn't get a touch like... No, no, because as a guy, I think I'm still in good shape, yeah?

5:30Pascal Chimbonda:I think I keep myself really good, healthy, you know, and I see I can help my team, you know. So during your band you played? No, I couldn't play because I was banned. But when the band is finished, yes, I did play like maybe 22 games. Well, come to your club career, but I just want to go straight in. What was the crack when Zidane had just been sent off Wow. In the World Cup final. We're going from Schemmersdale to the World Cup final. That's how we're hired. No matter what level it is, there's always a fight on the pitch. Mate, like, seriously, it was heartbreaking, you know. Our best player, you know, Vincent Thoth, you know, and he was winning.

6:20Pascal Chimbonda:He was 1-1 in the game, yeah. Yeah. I think we could still win the game because Italy at this time didn't show nothing, even we played 10-man, yeah. But I think if we were skipping Zidane on the pitch, I think that woke up, France will win that woke up easy because the tournament he had, you know, and it was, everyone said that he was the best. What was it like after the game? After he's done that, did he say anything? Did he come in and apologize? No, no, no. You know, like, what you can't say to him, you know what I mean? We don't know what happened to the pitch. Yeah, we don't know what the players say to him, you know, on the pitch at that time, you know.

7:03Pascal Chimbonda:And after when we come to the changing room, you know, like he was there sitting there, you know, like head down, you know, and we just go say, it's okay, it's happening, you know what I mean? It's not the end of the... It's okay. Surely somebody said, Zinedine, can't be doing that, love. But what can you say? I don't know, yeah. What can you say? What can you say? I know it's Zidane, but we'll cup final. Okay, well, I can... Me, the first time I've been in a French team, yeah? So I go to the changing room. Oh, Zidane, no, you couldn't do that. What are you doing, son? What do you want me to say?

7:38Zinedine! No, you can't do that, Zinedine.

7:42Pascal Chimbonda:Me, I can't say, oh, Zidane, you can't do that. You know what I mean? I just say, yeah, like everyone was disappointed, but it's life, you know what I mean? Like, it's not the end of the world, you know. Okay, we lost our competition, but it's life, you know. I mean, everyone, you know, is different. I bet everyone's walked past him, going, oh, no problem, no problem. No, I would just say, You just fucking coughed us a World Cup, you're World Cup. I just give you a tap of the shoulder, man. It's okay. Yes. You know, it's hard, but. You could be sat with a World Cup winner's medal now. I know. You can have it on right now.

8:17Pascal Chimbonda:Yes. But you know, like, yeah, it was, it was, it was hard. Yeah. It was really hard because all the criticise we had before, before the World Cup, you know, and arriving in the final, you know, and nearly winning, you know, it would be massive, massive, massive, but it's life. At what point did you know that you were in the squad? Like, was it, did you know you was going to be in the squad early on? You had an unbelievable season at Wigan. Yeah. I knew I would be in the squad. You get a phone call from the manager, yeah? You've never been in the French team before. So he tells you, yes. I say, yes, I book my holiday to go on holiday.

9:01Pascal Chimbonda:And he told me, wait before I go on holiday. So he said, maybe we'll be two changes in the French team because I think at that time it was Ribéry. Ribéry as well was the same like me, you know what I mean? So when he said it would be maybe two changes, yeah? So when he gave me, I said, definitely I would be in that team because a manager wouldn't call a player for the first time, for his first time in the team. You know what I mean? I never been in a French team, you know, back in the day. So yeah, of course, I was confident to be there. It's a massive thing, isn't it? Like to call a player up to a World Cup squad and never had a cap before.

9:41Yeah, it's madness. So you know when you were playing for, is it pronounced Bastille? Bastille? When you left them in 2005, how far away from the French squad would you say you were? Like, were you getting linked or? I was like miles, miles, miles, miles away. Far from that. Yeah, I wasn't, this wasn't in my head. because in France, like, the most don't recognize me as a good player

10:11Pascal Chimbonda:because what happened to me in Bastia, you know, I mean, more people just focus on what happened to me, the racist things happened to me in Bastia, you know. That's why people see this around me. But in England, you see me more as a player, how good I was on the pitch, how good I was doing. my job on the pitch, you know, and that's why I always say always I like to be in England. Before you went to Wigan, did Marseille come in for you? Yeah, Marseille come in for me, yeah. So did you have a decision? Marseille? No, it wasn't a decision, you know, like, this happened to me in Bastia, yeah, I want a fresh start, you know, I mean, I want to go away with that, you know, go away, go somewhere else I can start fresh only focus on my football you know and and Wigan give me the opportunity to to do it yeah I just I just go I was I just go close eyes and I just go because for my league I always wanted to play in in England so that's opportunity came and I just I just go yeah I remember saying because you just started on fire didn't you I remember watching games like who the fuck's that and where have they got him from he came out of nowhere because in Wigan yeah just get promoted yeah get promoted seriously I come I come in England didn't know the place Wigan they tell me you go to Wigan say yeah Pummelik yeah but where where is Wigan you know what I mean I know it's a town in close to Manchester Liverpool yeah just go you know what I mean you never know what's going to happen you you want to play in the Premier League so that's an opportunity came you know Wigan yeah just go do your do your things because I know myself you know I mean as a player because I know I had I had something what did you actually think when you landed in Wigan what the fuck have I done no no no first things is my my English yeah came to came to England man couldn't speak any word I swear to God.

12:26They only speak broken English in Wigan.

12:28Pascal Chimbonda:Yeah, and the manager was Paul Duell. You know, he's from Liverpool. Wow, man. My chance, you know, like my chances, we got a guy from, he was working with the press and he was speaking French and he was helping me while I was in Wigan. Did you know, you probably educate me here, but did you know you could play for France? Because you'd already played for Guadeloupe. Yeah, Guadeloupe, yeah. And I know it's a French province, but how come you could be picked for France if you've already played for Guadeloupe? I don't know. I don't have any clue about that one. But you know what I mean? I think it's...

13:10It's not the phone call. Yeah, I think it's... Maybe I didn't... That runners-up medal's void.

13:14Pascal Chimbonda:No, maybe I think I didn't play any big competition with Guadeloupe, like the Gold Cup or things like this. So it's all qualifiers. Yeah, that's why maybe I was eligible to play from France. Right. Because I think now, I think you have to wait like maybe five years. If you play from France and have to go play to Guadalupe, you have to wait five years and after you can go play. Right, yeah. Now, I think it's like this now, yeah. I mean, there's big games and there's big games. Do you plan any different for a World Cup final than what you would do a normal game? to be fair with you yeah I I won't lie to you yeah I was in the World Cup yeah but physically I was there yeah my body was there physically I was there head wasn't there my body was physically I was there but my head wasn't there I know I wouldn't play any game would you rather have gone holiday?

14:15no no I was happy to be there, yeah? But you know, when you play football, yeah? It's like that's hunger you got.

14:27Pascal Chimbonda:You want to be on the pitch, you know? I know he's the best 24th player you pick to go in the World Cup, yeah? But I feel pain, still pain, you know? That manager didn't give me the opportunity, you know, to show in France, yeah, how good I was. You know what I mean? Because people say he picked me, yeah? But because I've been the select, the best wideback in England, yeah? But I don't think he never seen me play. He just picked me because I finished best wideback in the country because he never come with me in the game. Did he not? No. If he came out, I would know he's there because the club would say, Oh, French people there to come watch you.

15:18Pascal Chimbonda:But he never, never. And we play friendly game, yeah, before the World Cup. But for me, if we play friendly game before the World Cup, you never see me play. Maybe you see me play in a TV or, you know, couple clip of me, you see me play. but give me 45 minutes to show you or to show everyone in front what I can do. Because every people think I was there for a surprise. They just picked me to just complete the squad. And because I finished best way back, because they never see me play. That's the frustration I have. You know what I mean? Like, okay, you pick me in the World Cup. I can't play in the World Cup because Samuel at that time was, okay, Willy Samuel was playing for Bayern Munich.

16:12Pascal Chimbonda:He waits for his time because Chugan was playing before him, you know. So he got his time. But me, Samuel after that, I stopped because, but I never get picked after the World Cup. Never get picked. They do a French B team. I even didn't get picked in a French B team. so you know like this is hurtful and that's why I say I prefer to be in England and that's France because you know they don't give me that recognised I have you know what I mean and you know and did you think you trained alright in the World Cups you don't train in it because you've been there a month you know I mean okay you do a pre-season game after because you play every what free day or something like this so you don't have plenty time to training yeah Okay, the ones who play, just do their own things, you know, and after we do maybe play against a local team, you know, from there, you know, I mean, there's nothing really to do, you know.

17:15Pascal Chimbonda:Me, I won't lie, before the World Cup final, yeah, you know what time I go to bed? Before the World Cup, I think I go to bed at six o 'clock in the morning. Playing FIFA? No, I have, you know, my hair. I used to have a plait, you know, and I just to take time to take them off. So you're doing your hair? Yeah. On your own? Yeah, just take it off, you know, I mean, take it off, just give a big afro, you know. Why? We're not tired? I know I wouldn't play. I know I wouldn't play. no point to go bed at 8 or something like this I just I'll go bed at 6 o 'clock in the morning I'd still be thinking the day before if Willy goes down after 5 minutes I'm on that would be in the back of my head I'm like you never know do you I know I knew myself yeah personally myself I knew I would never be on that pitch you might as well have gone out might as well have kicked off all the Germany but he was it was says it's good experience a month with this calibre of player you know it was really really really good it's a great experience man you see that squad yeah Fiora Ribery Ribery Zidane Bartez Makalele Turam Trezeguer so you just sit on the bench and watch watch how good they are yeah no it was good it was good that's experience it's not many players get that experience, but I'm glad I had it because, you know, the team, he won the World Cup in 1998, yes, in Paris, yeah?

19:03Pascal Chimbonda:It's quite a bit maybe similar, a lot player from that 2006 in that team, you know? And at that time in 1998, yeah, I wasn't play any professional game, innit? Yeah, so these are like, you're there with the icons when you're a young lad. Eight years after that. So I watched them on the TV in my homeland in Guadalupe, yeah, with my mum. And watching that, and I say to my mum, I remember I say to my mum, you will see me on that TV as well, yeah. eight years after that 2006 I'm I'm in that World Cup beautiful similar with the similar with the same same player who was in 1998 yeah that's how bad and I wasn't even I wasn't even professional footballer yet you know is there Pascal on the bench oh he looks tired no he wasn't he wasn't I was hyped.

20:17Pascal Chimbonda:Yeah. You know when you're hyped because you're excited of the final because it's a four-cup final, but it's okay. I enjoy. We had Jan Molby on and he spoke about playing with Cruyff and he said he walked in the dressing room and he just kept himself to himself because he was that big, that much of a... He just kind of distanced himself. Was the Dan like that? I imagine he was that good. No, no, no. He's a great guy. He's the best I ever see. Just don't say anything about his sister. No, the best I ever see, yeah, is Karram. You think he's a player, you can go to him and have a chat with him. He will speak to you.

21:00Pascal Chimbonda:You don't have to be feared because of Zidane. If you go to him, he will chat with you. He'll have a laugh with you. I have a laugh with him. Yeah, because I'm someone if I'm in the changing room, you know, I'm not someone who stay on my side. I'm not the loudest one, but I'm someone I like to go to people, you know what I mean, just to talk, you know, things like this. And I think it was a good bond between all the players you see there, you know. When you see that, you say you cannot push them, but yes, of course you can. Was there any of them like, we've all been in squads with really good players who are just shit at training?

21:38You know, like, just not very good in training, but when they get on the pitch, is there any of them who fall under that category? No. And you look at them and you go, how the fuck does he do that? You know what I mean, though? No. Pascal, you never used to like training. I'm telling you. Yeah, there was one in the squad, actually. No. Doing set pieces like that. No.

22:03it's not it's not a good example yeah like you just say i didn't like to training yeah but when it was physic yeah like we do winning yeah i was nobody there but sometimes you come in the morning you know like it's cold you know like you just you know like you just go out of your comfy zone and you come in training and you see what you do in the training, you will say, not today, don't that today. And when you do this in your head, you know your training going to be bad. You know that. So when we do play game in training,

22:44Pascal Chimbonda:I'm happy. You know what I mean? I'm happy to do it. But when you do running, man, it's a worse, worse, worse thing. I hate. But I do it, but I hate it. You know what I mean? Yeah, But like I say, you know, like you got good player in training and when they come in the game, they're bad. Yeah. So me, I was, like you say, no good in training, but good on a Saturday. So that's the manager. That's the manager like you're good on a Saturday, no on the training page. Gents, we've got an exclusive offer. I know you like them. What were your first impressions of an English dressing room? I'm just thinking you've got Bullard in the - Oh, yeah, yeah. Like, no, like it's something, you know, like in France, yeah? In a changing room, when you go play a game or when, you know, the changing room is quiet because no music.

25:44You know, you come in England, music, like people dancing, even the manager there with you you know like do some steps you know like the manager there's some steps you go in front it's like quiet I wasn't shocked

25:59Pascal Chimbonda:but I was like you know surprised like why is it like this here oh maybe something I may like you know and after we go play before a game you go to the boss like it looks like the game finished already but we don't even play yet and it's the noise you know like People play card, you know, like, oh, I say, oh, it's unbelievable. Yeah, that's something. And you go, you don't, you just take your wash bag. You know what I mean? You don't need to worry about your shoes or, you know, just, front you have to bring your shoes in your bag, you know, like my time, you know what I mean? Your big bag with you.

26:37And we come in England, just your wash bag and shoes, everything is packed for you, you know what I mean? Shoes. Cops as well. Yeah, everything was back. I said, oh, that's good. That's the life I like. You know what I mean? I'm coming in a country that's everything I like is there. The best, yeah. Remember much about when Duncan Ferguson got sent off? Everton. Everton. Yeah.

27:05Pascal Chimbonda:Did he do something to you before or after? Oh, yeah. Massive guy like that. You know what I mean? No, he did something to, I think, Bula, I think. Shana was Shana in the last face in it yeah Jimmy jump Jimmy jump over the over the on the floor yeah and after like oh I try like you know like show up you know like go protect your teammate you know I mean but he just put his hand there you know like you know like he tried to you tried to show up you know you know like he just put his hand there you say how big he is Just put it on, you can't, I can't even move anymore. Oh, man. Oh, no. Seriously, no, it's good.

27:53Just going back to Bastille, did you say you had some sort of problems with racism in Bastille?

27:56Pascal Chimbonda:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We play a game and, you know, like, just the fans start to do the monkey song. The home fans or the away fans? Home fan. Home fan. And after the ball come out, I go in to pick up a ball, yeah. next to the fence and a little child just spit at me. And after I said, wow, I wanted to leave the pitch. I said, yes, I can't play anymore. And after Christian Karambe at that time was playing with us, he said, no, don't leave the pitch because if you leave the pitch, you give the people the reason why. Don't let people go to your head. You know what I mean? And I stay, I finish the game, yeah.

28:45Pascal Chimbonda:And after the game, man, I go to my car. They flew like stone on my car. The fan come to my car, like moving. Oh man, I was scared. You know, I'd never be scared like this. I was so scared, man. Wow. It was so awful, awful. When this happened to me, yeah, I got some player in my team, yeah. They would say, oh, they was with me, you know, like they understand, you know, like they with me, you know, like we understand. And when I left the club, they say what happened to me is my fault and it's really good what happened to me. Wow, when I see that, I was shocked. But it was really like... Like Yonke spat in.

29:35Pascal Chimbonda:Yeah, spat, you know, like you go, the fan was in the stand there. you see so much people's path you know when you get the ball you know I mean yeah that was something horrible man and wow it's it's it's not I forget about it it's seen in my head back in my head but you have to live with it yeah you can't do anything because but it was horrible man that's why I live I want I didn't want to go to Marseille you know and then clean yeah clean yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you must have thought, like you said, as soon as you walked in that dressing room at the game, win first games. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

30:18That's it, you know what I mean?

30:20Pascal Chimbonda:You see the atmosphere, you see the fun in England is different, you know what I mean? So that gives you a big boat to give everything on the pitch, you know what I mean? Other players make you feel welcome when you arrived? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No initiations or anything like that? No, Jason Roberts will take me on this wing, you know what I mean? Pushing you? No, just take me with him, you know, because I was just first come, you know what I mean? Because I didn't know the town, I didn't know anything. So he showed me everywhere, even in Manchester, because he was there before, you know what I mean?

30:53Pascal Chimbonda:So when I was, I come on my own, you know? So sometimes I go into this house, you know, and yeah, just chill with him, you know, yeah. Show me around, you know what I mean? Until I get more comfy, you know? That's even more impressive from Jason Roberts, the fact that you couldn't speak any, he couldn't even have a conversation with you, could he? No, I couldn't, but... So he's like, come to my house, and then you just sat there, and you're both not talking to each other. No, but he come from Caribbean as well, you know what I mean? Right. So we could quite understand some word, you know, we speak together, you know what I mean?

31:28Pascal Chimbonda:Because I speak French, but it's broken French sometimes, you know what I mean? Any stories on Jimmy? No, he was a funny guy, you know what I mean? A guy like this, you know, when you're at a football club or you're in a team, you need someone like this in your team. You definitely need someone like this in your team. Even when you lose, if you win, you know what I mean? You definitely need someone like this in your team. You know, like in training, yeah, when it's snowing, you know, like when they put the snow on the side, yeah, before training, they push, he just goes, jump straight away to the snow.

32:08Pascal Chimbonda:I say, wow, this guy is crazy. Me, I put gloves, I put everything. We just come out from the changing room, big snow, they just go, chomp in it. Wow, this guy is. But football, man, he is, what a player. Do you think because of his antics, he was underrated as a player? Yeah. Because of his character. I think he's been selected for England once, no? Yeah, yeah. I think he's, like you just said, his character, man, I think because he's a good player. I play with him, I can't tell you that he's a baller. And even on the pitch, he's funny, he make you laugh, man. Even you just look at him and you just laugh him, you know what I mean?

32:55Pascal Chimbonda:Yeah. That is a good guy, yeah, yeah. I can't say anything bad about him, so yeah. Is it true about him having a wank in a hotel room with five teammates in the room? Yeah, I don't know that one. Were you one of the five? Did he do that? Not me, though. No, I can't remember that. I think it's something you won't forget. Can't remember that one, no, no. He's my guy, so all respect, yeah. When did you realise in that first season that you were probably going to get a move? Because you know like when I signed for Wigan, yeah? And like I say, they didn't know me, you know, as a player. Because I come in in Wigan, I say, oh, I want this, I want this, I want this.

33:44Pascal Chimbonda:And after the woman look at me say, who you are, you know, like who I am to ask this, this, this, this. So you're asking for too big a contract? Not a big contract, but like... When you thought you were worth it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And she said, who you are, you know what I mean? Who am I? Yeah, I say, he said, no, you don't prove anything. So you, so six months, yeah? About six months, like, I had a good six months, yeah? And the team like AC Milan, you know, like Bayern Munich, you know, like start to come knock at the door, yeah? My fee to leave was, I think, a million, a million, one million five, five something like this, yeah.

34:30Pascal Chimbonda:Claws. Yeah, the claws, yeah. And the team start to come, chat, ask things. And after the club come to me, say, can we take off the, what do you call it? Take off the claws. Yeah, take off the claws. Yeah, take off the claws. We don't put any claws because, you know, like 1.5, that any team can come and give 1.5. He say, can we take the claws and give you a, more money you know things like this I said okay because I was I was happy you know like in Wigan you know like enjoying my football you know Is it true the transfer request? I knew you would come on that one In your sock? Nah it wasn't my socks Hey Your gloves Listen me I was I was happy at Wigan yeah I was really happy at Wigan and no one would say I'd never give everything for that team you know but you're a player, you know, when you play football, you want to go higher as you can, you know, when you play football.

35:36Pascal Chimbonda:So my agent gave me, say, you got Spurs, yeah, I want you in the end of the season. I didn't even write a transfer request, you know, because like I say, my English wasn't good. I couldn't do anything, writing anything myself, you know what I mean? agent writes writing for me yeah and he said this is how this happened in England you have to give to the to the manager a transfer request you know what I mean but I don't know how that's how he's working in England but he said that's that's how he's working my agent he says that's how he's working so I trust I trust in him you know what I mean was it an English agent yeah so I trust in him maybe he lied to me you know because and after that I knew this is not it's not the hazards working, you know what I mean?

36:23So he lied to me and made me to go give what he gave me to the manager. And he said, yeah, you have to give him the manager after the game. But me, I don't know anything about, I don't know, but because me, I don't know anything about transfer requests or anything.

36:41Pascal Chimbonda:Me, he just tell me to do something. I just listen to what he say. And wow, when I gave the manager, we lost. We just lost like 5-2 or 4-2. Was it Arsenal? Arsenal last game of the season. I've got second-hand embarrassment. But we just give, and I just, I don't know what happened in my head, you know. I mean, I just sit down there, I check there, I see the paper there, I just go, the envelope there, I just go give the manager. But the manager was pissed off, we just lost 4-2. And by mistake, yeah, the chairman was next to him. the chairman that was next to him wow and I think they open I think I say oh the manager will take this he will go home with the envelope and open this at home you know they open it in the changing room red letter there open it in the changing room man and after we go we go home he didn't say anything we go home and the captain The captain called me, yeah, Mark Jackson.

37:52Pascal Chimbonda:Called me, say, you know, because we have to meet before we go on holiday. We have to meet one day before we go on holiday. And after that, he say, it's best. The manager say, don't want to see you. Oh, I say, wow. But I still under contract with Wigan, yeah. The manager says, it's the best thing, you know, come the last day and go on holiday, you know, go. But I knew they was pissed off against me, you know, because he didn't congratulate me for being in the World Cup. So I went to the World Cup and the World Cup finished. But the team is back training already.

38:36But I'm sitting on holiday. I passed holiday. No one told me when to come back. Nothing. I got a phone call for the captain. you know like it's been a month. A month.

38:51Pascal Chimbonda:Captain called me say, Pastor, the manager is telling you you need to come, come, come. Where are you? I was in my homeland, you know, in Guadalupe. So you're on the beach? Yeah, on the beach. Yeah, he said you need to come. I said, okay, yeah. So back in the training ground, said no congratulate me for being a World Cup final, nothing. I think training with the reserve for a week and after back to the first team. And after I think the league was going to start maybe two weeks time. I think they get a wide back boys. MSN boys. So I'm there. I'm a, we play first game, I think we play against Newcastle.

39:43Pascal Chimbonda:No, not Newcastle. We play a game at home, first game at home. And I am on the bench because I'm not fully fit. Yeah, I start on the bench. So it's nil-nil. I'm on the bench. I think second half, middle of second half, I come on. Ball to me. Lay up with someone and we score, yeah? We win 1-0, that's the first game. I'm involved in the build-up of the goal. It's still tough I'm going with Spurs, with my agent. I'm there. Because I'm not fully fit, I play maybe 20 minutes, I pick off an injury. The week starts, I say, I can't train because I pull my calf in the game. So I do physio, physio, everything during the week.

40:42Pascal Chimbonda:And the weekend we play Newcastle away. So I'm doing my physio, everything. And my agent called me and he said, Oh, pass. Things going, you know, I was talking with Spurs, you know, like everything is okay. I said, okay, yeah, yeah, I don't know. I'm saying I'm injury. You know what I mean? So I can't do anything. I just, I'm on a table, you know. And after, I think they called me on the, they take Emilewski. Yeah. They sign Emilewski while I was there, you know. They sign Emilewski and I heard Spurs want to sell, no, Wigan want to sell me six million to Spurs. Yeah. And I go see the guy and I say, I don't want to, I don't want to leave anymore.

41:38Pascal Chimbonda:I said, I want to stay, you know what I mean? So I said, the six million you want to sell me, because you say, you only sell me if they give you the six million. If less, I won't go. And the transfer windows may go into short, maybe in a week or a couple of days. So I said, okay, I want to stay, but the six million you want to sell me, yeah? So give it to me in a contract. You know what I mean? Like I signed maybe five years and, you know, like because you want to say, you say my value is that. So if my value is that, so you can't give me a contract of that for my value. And he say, no, we can't because Emileski just signed.

42:28Pascal Chimbonda:So I think it was Emileski will be a big, the big wages, you know what I mean? So you can't sign it. I say, you can't give you that amount, but we can't give you but no big one like this. I said, okay, you know what I mean? I said, okay, but I still have Spurs back in my head, you know what I mean? Because it's a big team, it's London, they play Europa all the time, they battle for the fifth place, fourth place, it's okay. So I'm on the bench, I'm on the physio, my Jareem, he said, I come pick you up. we go London to finalize the thing because if you stay there I don't think it will happen you know what I mean so we have to force force force the things I say okay I'm in a training ground you know like he say okay I come pick you so I do all my physio so he come pick me we go London you know and we stay in Mario Hotel in Epping you know like no far from Spurs training on the X training on you know in Shego you know so we therefore today you know Wigan say if the Spurs don't give them six million you don't do anything and the manager from Wigan is mad at me you know I mean because he said no because he said no he called Maj and he said you need to bring Pascal back to Wigan because he will be involved to play to go to Newcastle.

44:04Pascal Chimbonda:But I say, I can't go. I'm injured. He say, no, you will go with us and you will do your treatment in Newcastle with us. But I say, but normally when a player is injured, he stay, he stay, he stay home and do his, yeah, because the manager really loved me, you know what I mean? He didn't want me to leave, you know what I mean? But it's, like I say, it's football, you know what I mean? I want to, people would say it's about money but it wasn't about money it's just about I was in the French national team you know I mean and to stay in that French national team you have to play higher you know I mean you have to play in a good team or a big team and at Wigan okay we do a good season we finish 10th.

44:49By the way I'm fuming with my agent because if I'm if he's making me handing a transfer request on the last day of the season yeah in the dressing room I want that move to happen yesterday by Tuesday yeah I want to be out of there quick. Yeah, yeah, that's it, you know what I mean? Yeah, because if I stay, you know what I mean? It would be bad, you know what I mean? You would see me like a bad person, you know?

45:10Pascal Chimbonda:So that's why I wanted to, I wanted to leave, you know what I mean? Because of what happened, you know what I mean? Because I don't think the fan would be happy with me if I would stay, you know what I mean? So yeah, we do everything, you know, last, I signed for this person last minute, last minute. But if I told you it's the last minute, because Wigan keep it really, really delayed, delayed, delayed thing. And the last minute I say, but you know, I don't, I enjoy, I think if it wasn't Wigan, people maybe wouldn't know me as a player. You know what I mean? So yes, this club is a big part of my career.

45:50Pascal Chimbonda:You know what I mean? I think that's, for me, that's where I started playing football. Yeah. so do you know when you've left the World Cup squad after the final and you've gone back to Guadalupe and nobody's informed you when you need to go back to Wigan when do you think you might have started thinking I probably need to go back now maybe November time or that is like literally no one's told me to come back I knew I knew how I had to come back at some point at some point but I didn't one more pina colada I didn't know when because he didn't give me a date. So if the captain didn't give me, you know what I mean?

46:31Pascal Chimbonda:I wouldn't know. You know what I mean? Maybe the season will start, I will be like, oh, I will remember. So I have to get back. We'll get Christmas out of the way. But you must have been speaking to your agent and saying, is this move happening or not? Because you don't want to go back to Wigan, really. You want to get a move. Yeah, I know. But because us first didn't want to really give that six million, innit so it makes things like delaying at both ends yeah awkward you know what I mean for me but after the walk-up you know when you after the walk-up you know you don't think about moving you know what I mean you just finish walk-up you just go chill so when it's when you're in you know when you're back when you're in that's how the pressure is coming up you know what I mean but when you finish the walk-up you're in the sun you know you don't think about that anymore you know you're with the family, you don't think about that.

47:25But when you're in, that's why the pressure is there. You start to, wow, I need to, we need to, you know, the time is, you know what I mean? Yeah, it's count, you know what I mean? You need to rush, you know, like, phew. But, you know, but if I didn't put that transfer,

47:44Pascal Chimbonda:if I didn't give that transfer request, yeah, and I don't think I would play for Spurs because at that time, you know, Dave Whelan, he was a good friend with Alex Ferguson. And one time I met him, you know, and he said, oh, you do, you know, like before the season finished, oh, we're so pleased with you, you know, like you're doing really good and something good will happen to you. And I think we're talking about that. but because I give that you know what I mean that's I like how he's doing under the table yeah yeah you know like keep going down was it in the sock you know I give that transfer request and people I think people see me as bad when you do something at this time you're bad do you know what like looking from the outside in it does look like you've handed your transfer request in last day of the season you've gone to the World Cup then you've gone on on your holiday and you've not turned in you just thought fuck it I'm not going back that's what I would say from the outside from the outside that you see yeah I got it yeah but it's just I didn't know what day to come back but Pascal Pascal do you know if you really wanted to go you could have made a phone call when do you want me back but the the court they didn't want to speak to me that even you know That is, that is, that is, you've been given an inch and taken a mile away.

49:20Pascal Chimbonda:You know the last day we had, yeah, I told you we shouldn't, we shouldn't have the meeting with the club, everyone, and they told me don't come. That's, I think that's, that, that day, if we had a meeting, they would tell you when to come back or, you know what I mean, what to do, when to come back. I think, Pascal, when they said, when they said don't come, I think they just meant that one day, I don't think they meant ever again. You've took it literally as like, I'm not, they've told me not to come in, so I'm not going ever again. So it could be construed as you've just thought, fuck it, I'm not with that on strike.

49:54Pascal Chimbonda:No, I wanted it. No, but nothing happening. I still have a Wigan player. So yes, of course I have to go back. I wanted to go back, but it's happened like this, you know what I mean? But that's it. Maybe, you know, people see me as a bad, but seriously, I didn't do it with any bad feeling, you know. It just, I've been saying to do it this way. And if I knew how it's happening, when you need to, when you play a league of a club, you know, if I knew, and I would never do this. Never, never, never. Quick break, gents, for our unbelievable friends who've supported this podcast for a long, long time, O 'Neill Sportswear.

50:40Absolute heroes. I haven't got any unbelievable friends apart from these guys. I'm not surprised to be honest. That's how we're your friend and we're just how we're unbelievable. No, no. But the key is if you've got your own team whether it's five a side 11 a side seven a side you can sort your own kit out and design it yourself. That's the thing. I think it's four to six weeks from design to delivery. Yes. Imagine saying to your teammates lads I'll sort the kits out and you rock up with these. Yeah. You're going to be cock of the north. You're going to be an unbelievable friend. That's exactly what you're going to be.

51:19Sorry, John. You can wear them to the pub. Oh, with a pair of jeans? With a pair of them skinny jeans. I'd wear that to a wedding. That doesn't surprise us. No, they're nice, but they're not that nice, I'll be honest with you. There's a link in the description, and under the cost viewer or listener, you can just click click any way and get your team sorted out at a discounted rate. Size wise I've gone up in Excel I've had a good Christmas So I'm Excel You medium What are you now JPS? I think I might be Excel-ish It's a very good Christmas It's March I know you've had to work I'd probably double Excel for the big one But it's comfy It's comfy Oversized So yeah that link's in the description Get yourself involved And thanks again to O 'Neill's Tax Act can think of a million things more fun than filing taxes TaxAct is going to name some now.

52:13Sitting in traffic. Folding a fitted bedsheet. Listening to your co-worker talk about his fantasy team. Digging a hole. Digging an even larger hole next to that original hole. Unfortunately, TaxAct's filing software can't make taxes fun. But TaxAct can help you get them done. TaxAct. Let's get them over with. I think it all worked out well. You played 33 games that first season at Tottenham. It all worked out.

52:42Pascal Chimbonda:Yeah, it was good. I'll have to like, it's another step, you know, I mean, you play with best, better player. You play like you compete, you know, like, yes, and London, you know, so. What was he like, Martin Joll? He always looked laid back, chill. Yeah, he was good, good, good. Yeah, I know. He's chill, chill manager, you know, I mean. and it was really chill yeah it's chill let you do your things you know what I mean it don't put any pressure on you you know what I mean here's his coming 4-4-2 here's his 4-4-2 play he give you a restriction and you play the game yeah do your best and that's it you know what I mean no regret yeah were you straight in the team?

53:25yeah were you straight in the team? that you paid the calf calf the calf

53:34Pascal Chimbonda:No, that time when I came, it was, I think, international break or something like this. So at that time, yes, I healed good and I come back, yeah. And first game was, I think, against Man United. We played against Man United, first game at Man United. That was my first game. Good game. Yeah, it was a good game. I've got down here, there was one game against Man United. Yeah, it was one nil, yeah. You had Ryan Giggs in your pocket. Yeah, no, it's bad. Not in my pocket, but it was a good battle. You know what I mean? Good battle. I like it. You know what I mean? You know, like as a defender, you know, you like a good battle against the best.

54:13Pascal Chimbonda:You know what I mean? So that's good. Yeah. Who was the first player to give you a really tough game? Because everything's been positive. They're wigging. Yeah. Who was the first player where you thought, oof? The first? When I play the game? Yeah, just the player that you play the game? Oh, mate. It's Henry, man. Thierry Henry Thierry Henry oh he's he's he's something yeah yeah because he like to drift over to that yeah get in there yeah yeah he drifts there and he's quick you know what I mean oh yeah sometimes yeah it's tough to play against him tough tough we see that I see that the last game we played against Wigan against Arsenal the last game at at Albuy you know what I mean wow No, we lost 4-2.

55:02Transfer request to 4. You'll have been off balance because of the paper in your sock. From the dodgy car. You know, like when you was winning, we was winning 2-0. Everyone's going to be happy after the game, you know, 4-2.

55:22Pascal Chimbonda:No, he was tough. Yeah,

55:28Pascal Chimbonda:playing against him. Good squad at Tottenham. Yeah, good squad. Yeah,

55:39Pascal Chimbonda:we got Wobbe King, we got a player, Ledney King, we got a good team. you know I was going to say about Tarab yeah Tarab yeah yeah was he frustrating did you try and no he's he's the best technically player you ever see ever even better than that French squad huh even if you put him in that French squad he was that good yeah technically yeah he's the best he can do he can do anything to anyone like that he's one of the best yeah if he was right there and working work hard, you know what I mean? I think he would do a better career that he had, you know, because he was talented. He was only 16, you know, when he's got my Spurs.

56:28Was he? Yeah, so, yeah. I mean, you've got Berbatov, you've got Turratt, and you've got Mido. Not really grafters, have they? Yeah.

56:41Pascal Chimbonda:He gets a minute, yeah. But, you know, Martin Joel, you know, I know how to put him in the game, you know what I mean? So he was frustrated, you know what I mean? But he's 16, he shouldn't have understood, you know, 16, yeah. Like you come in a squad, you know, like this, you know, you get minute, but you have to do the best with the minute you get. What shape were Mido in at this point? Were he big Mido or slim Mido? No, he was in a, I think he was in a good shape because we are, I think me and Mido, we arrived in the same time. yeah yeah he was in a good he was in a good shape yeah strong yeah good shape you know like wow that's fun fun we have four four good strikers Bilba Wubikin Defoe and middle yeah he was a strange one because it looked like he could put a stone on him in a week you'd watch match of the day one week and then put it on the week after and you're like how's he become a pie shot it's easily done he had players he had players like this you know what I mean yeah He likes chips, too much chips.

57:50He likes to much chips. Up us to the best of us. He likes to much chips. When you eat too much chips, you put weight in maybe one, two days, three days. What was London like for a night out? Were it better than Wigan? Yeah. Did you embrace the...

58:08Pascal Chimbonda:I'm not a party animal, but when I was going out, it was a good time. How long was Martignol there before he got sacked? Two years of Martignol. Yeah, two years of Martignol. And after he'd been sacked, replaced by... Ramos. Ramos, yeah. Was that a change? Oh, change a lot, man. Not for the better? Not for the better. Oh, you finished 17, I think 17 or 16 in that league. It's good we win the Cowley comeback at Chelsea. If not, no, you will nothing, you know what I mean? Yeah, but he was straight, man. While he's watching what you're eating, you know, like, wow. My dog fuming. Me dog gone. Now, if you got too much, if you put on weight, or you have to, after training, you have to win after training, you know what I mean?

59:00Pascal Chimbonda:Yeah, wow. no no sauce in in in the content or no wow it was hard the dry rice dry pasta you know like wow everything like worse you know so maybe people eat a little bit there and have to go home you put you put mayo ketchup you know you put all the sauce you want I hope it's good. Yes, let's go. Yes. It's like you winning a game, you know, when you go home, you know, after when you're eating in the country, you know. Yeah. That was our bet. L 'Ambo's money is something. What did Nicky Butt do? Did you? Oh, no. Just, I just slap him like a big slap. Just a little, you know, touch his face, you know what I mean?

59:54Pascal Chimbonda:Because like I say, don't speak to me, you know what I mean? I don't know you, just don't speak to me. yeah and don't touch me he touched me i just push his face he's ever glove on yeah go on yeah i say you just a touch when you get two gloves i play with i put two i double my gloves yeah that's how i do i still doing it you know i mean yeah it's cold yeah me i like to be warm did you slap him yeah i just do this yeah yeah he does did you get did you get punished for it yeah yellow card yeah but if it's now I will get red card straight away yeah but that's I say the football back in the day was good so you could tackle someone in half his body you know I mean big tackle you don't get anything you know special moment league cup win yeah first trophy oh first trophy yeah I guess Chelsea that's the first one wow we could leave it yeah because it's that save our season you know yeah and was the crowd getting on it here and no no no I don't think in England you know like when you don't win game yeah I don't know now because now the crowd is more bad than before you know but back in the day I don't think the crowd was booing anyone you know I mean yeah now they boo you know I mean but back in the day you know I mean you're losing game okay it's bad time but I'd never see fun of Boeing right now, you know.

1:01:28Pascal Chimbonda:Yeah. Can you remember the first time you spoke to Roy Keane? Yeah, we spoke on the, I was on the preseason with Spurs. And we had a chat, me and Roy Keane, asked me if I want to come to Sunderland, you know what I mean? I say, I need to see, I just come, you know, like, it's good to meet someone face to face, On the phone, it's easy to talk, but after, you need to meet someone face to face. And I go to Sunderland and to see the place, show me around and he say, yes, he would like me to play for Sunderland. But after he, I heard he put some comment, you know, I mean, one time he was speaking with Neville, you know what I mean?

1:02:15Pascal Chimbonda:And he say, is the bad decision when he was at Sunderland, and he made his like to sign me. You know what I mean? Did he? I haven't heard him say that. Yeah, I heard her. I heard her. Yeah, I heard her. He was speaking with Gary Nevin on the podcast, same. And he say like, the bad thing he's doing is to sign me when people tell him to no sign me. You know what I mean? Yeah, I've got it here. He said that it was bad that he was warned not to sign you by the coaching staff at Spurs. Yeah. So I don't get it. You know what I mean? and we had a good chat, me and him, before I signed, you know what I mean?

1:02:55And, you know, like people, you know, like, I don't know if they have two face or, you know,

1:03:00Pascal Chimbonda:sometimes they can't tell you things just for the few, you know what I mean? Is there any reason you think that he'd say that, like, with attitude at the training? Yeah, maybe, maybe, maybe attitude, maybe training, but... With all the respect I have for working for all this career, you have a great career, you know, you won a lot trophy. But for me as a manager, I don't think it's shit. No shit, no shit. But it's not great for me. Because when you're a player, yeah, when you're a player, you like your coach to be on the pitch with you all the time. He was never there. Maybe coming on the first day for press conference, Friday pick up the team, we play on Saturday after the game, you don't see him until next week.

1:03:58Pascal Chimbonda:Me, I don't, your coach, for me, be there. He's living in Manchester, that's where he is. You know what I mean? Never, you see him once. Once. So for me, a coach, you need to be on the pitch, you know, like with your player, watch your player, what he do, and you can talk, you know, you can't say this about the player, you can't say, oh, this player, no, no, no. But no, like, listen to your assistant manager all the time, say that. If the assistant manager don't like that player, yeah? Yeah. Of course, he will say bad things about it, you know what I mean? Or anything about and bring it to you, say, oh, that player, no, no, no.

1:04:35And after, you know?

1:04:37Pascal Chimbonda:Yeah. So that's only that respect I don't give you. but the other things his career things the trophy and everything I give him respect for that but the other things no did you park in his parking spot yeah when I come to visit him yeah but I didn't know it was his parking just before before you signed yeah but I didn't know it was his parking spot he just said manager but I can't read it no I don't think he wasn't watching the manager there I don't think so no no I just park anywhere I see space I park but he wasn't he wasn't writing yeah he wasn't writing his working working place but that's it you know like manager yeah I've come to see the manager we could do we could do something good in Sunderland because we got we got a good player there but it didn't work why did you think it was the right move at the time because I mean you just played 49 games but because finished 11th won the league cup because Because we had to chat with the manager, you know what I mean?

1:05:43Pascal Chimbonda:We got to chat, Ramos, you know what I mean? And he wanted me to play centre-back. Right. But I knew I would never play centre-back because you get people there, you know what I mean? Because he bought, what's his name?

1:06:03Pascal Chimbonda:Alan Hutton. He was playing for Rangers. Oh, Alan Hutton, yeah. Yeah. So I knew he would play him. You know what I mean? You buy him maybe 10 million, so you won't leave him on the bench for 10 million. You know, you will have played him. You know what I mean? So left back, I don't really like to play left back because he's not my... I would play, but he's not my best position. You know what I mean? Where I get good, you know what I mean? So we get a discussion. He said, oh, you will play. I said, okay. So Sunderland come. He wants three Spurs players. It's Malbran, me and four, four Spurs players.

1:06:37Pascal Chimbonda:It was Kabul, me, Malbran and Timoteño. That's a deal. It was a deal there. It was there. Yeah. Yeah. Why not? Yeah. And Joaquin, you know, work with Joaquin. Like I said, as a player, as a good player, he played for Man United. Maybe he would be a good fit, you know what I mean? Did you ever see him properly lose his head? Joaquin? Oh, yeah, mate. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. In the changing room, man. You are others. No, no, no, no, no. We was in the changing room, man. It was, the game was losing the game. But me, I wasn't playing. I wasn't playing because I was with the ways of team.

1:07:20Pascal Chimbonda:You know what I mean? He put me with the ways of team, you know what I mean? So I go in the changing room, man. We, that game was losing. Was losing one nil or something like this. But we was playing so bad, yeah. He smashed the ball, you know, the ball, when you put the team on the board. He smashed the board on the floor and he talked to the board, yeah, on the floor. You stay on the... He talked to the board on the floor. Stay down. Yeah. I say in my head, wow. Get it again. Wow, that's really bad. And after he pointed the player, you shit, you shit, you shit, you shit, you shit, you shit. And you know the skipper, he was Dean Whitehead.

1:08:02Yeah, he's sitting down there like this. he's hung like this you know like when you change you sit there he's got he's Poggi Poggi sound like this I say wow he's gonna have to fight I say oh he was like he losing it man

1:08:21Pascal Chimbonda:he lose the plot but you know like every game or every training he was working with what do you call this guy he's always with you a mental guy always with you mentor psychologist yeah He was with that guy all the time. Every time he's there, that guy was with him all the time, walking everywhere in the training ground. I was with him all the time. So, wow, he was. And after he said, if any player have a problem with him, like, he says he's a jock, you know. So we go, we put the gloves on, we go in the gym, and the first one, you know, like, leave, you know what I mean? Boxing? Yeah, the box. If you have a problem with him, just put the gloves on, and we go in.

1:09:02Pascal Chimbonda:You ever think about it? We go, hey, I think it was, it's a joke. We never know with him, you know what I mean? Did you fall out with him then? When you said he put you in the reserves, was there a big fallout? No, I didn't fall out with him, you know, like, I had a good relation, I swear to God, me and him, we had a good relationship, you know what I mean? So I don't know why he said his things, you know what I mean? Because I had a good relationship with him. I don't have any, we never had any problem together. He put me in the reserve team because I think we was playing Chelsea away. And I think one Newcastle player have his birthday on the first day.

1:09:43Pascal Chimbonda:And he's invited us to go to his birthday. And after when we go there on the first day, we go play Chelsea on a Saturday and we lose 5-0 or something like this. And after the next day in the newspaper, they say, oh, this player was out on this Newcastle player's birthday. And after they say, oh, if I knew you guys was out, blah, blah, blah, why did you go out on the first day? You knew you were playing on Saturday. Yeah, but you can't go on a birthday, no have a drink, just, you know, because you play on Saturday. And he said, no, it's not good, guys. It's bad. I do two things, yeah? And he said, because I pass, I do two things too much, yeah?

1:10:41Pascal Chimbonda:So he sent me to the reserve for a month, yeah? What do you mean you did two things? Like when you... Went to the Bifties. No, yeah, that's one thing. And maybe I come in late too many... Too many times in training, yeah? that's true that's true so you went out Thursday night late Friday morning no because that's true you know what I mean so I so I got it he put me to do it I didn't say anything to him I go one month there training really hard with the reserve even the manager of the reserve can't say I wasn't involved or doing you know I was even go play with the reserve maybe two games with the reserve he would even come watch watch me play I was decent you know I mean yeah me to don't say anything, you know what I mean?

1:11:27Pascal Chimbonda:And yeah, I do two things, yeah, because first, even when I came to Sunderland, we played first game against Spurs, yeah, at Spurs. And I'm starting, yeah, I'm starting. I'm in the start 11. So, you know, when you wake up at 11, you have to go for a walk, yeah? When you go to walk outside for to lose your legs, you

1:11:56Pascal Chimbonda:I come down to the lift, yeah. When I come down to the lift, the lift open, and I see the door is there. The door to lift the hotel is there. So the lift, and I see the player just, I just behind them. Just walking out. Yeah, walking out. We just walk, like, maybe 10 minutes. We go walk. We have dinner, food. We go for a nap. We have our nap. and after we go for the meeting before we leave to go to the game, I'm not even in the starting 11. He's talking, he's saying, I have a change. Pascal, you're not in a team or even not in a bench because you was late for the walk. You see that two seconds I was out of the team.

1:12:52I told you I was lift open, door, just the player just there. I'm normative. I know they were just setting off on the walk, but what time, was it exactly on 11 o 'clock that the walk started? Or had they waited until five past? No, no, no. We just down, walk, go. Yeah? I come like maybe one, one or... Yes, I see the play there, the leaving, and I just... Did you just try and blend in with everybody else? No, I was just right there. No on the team, no even on the bench. So in his eyes, you're late for your first walk. Yeah, in the season.

1:13:36Pascal Chimbonda:How hard he is. Do you think you misunderstood in that Roy Keane sense? Because of your relaxed attitude, in that he sees it the way that he looks at football. Maybe, yeah. Be there at that time. In your mindset, you're not fucking it off. You come down and you learn. That's just your attitude towards it. For me, I'm not late, you know what I mean? Like, it's like they just leave the door right now. I'm just one second or two seconds behind them. And he's off. Because with working, I think as a player, the way he was as a player, that's the way he is as a manager. Yeah. Everything has to be right.

1:14:21So after that, did you change your attitude towards getting down on time?

1:14:28Pascal Chimbonda:Yeah, I did. Yeah, I did. But sometimes, you know, like... It just happened. It just happened to be late. Late is happening for every player. Every player has been late, you know what I mean? No, no. You never be late. Now and again. No, you've been late. Not as much as him. Yeah, you were always on the cusp, weren't you? You'd be late, yeah? I don't think I would ever late for... No! Oh, for training, regular, because I've got two hours drive, but... Two hours drive? I don't think I would ever... Whoa! I don't think I'd ever late for, like, meetings and that. No, meeting, I'd never late for the team meeting when you were watching the video, thing like this.

1:15:04Pascal Chimbonda:But late training, I'd been late for training. I was leaving, like, when I was at Spurs, I was leaving, like, five minutes for the training. Five minutes. And I was late. Sometime. Five minutes. But because you leave, you say it's only five minutes, yeah? You don't take attention of this, you know what I mean? But the worst it was at Blackbird, man. Blackbird, we always play for Blackbird. That's the worst. Everyone was late. I'm going to stick up for Roy, yeah? You're out Thursday night, even if you're drinking or not, you're still out Thursday night, aren't you? Even for a meal? Would you go out for a meal?

1:15:40I was thinking about this myself. So if you go for a meal, yeah? Is that what it were, a birthday meal? No, it's always a birthday, but we go... To a nightclub? Yeah, the birthday... No, you can't go to a nightclub, but you don't drink. You don't need to drink. In the eyes of Roy. If you go a couple hours there and leave before midnight or something like that, it's a big deal. It's still in the rules of your contract. Is it no drinking 48 hours, or is it in establishments that sell drink? I don't know. There's officially a thing in your contract normally. Yeah, you don't drink, yeah. But if you don't drink, you can go out, didn't you?

1:16:22I don't know. I don't know if it's like licensed premises. You're not allowed in a licensed premises 48 hours or whatever it is. Yeah, but then you can go out for a meal on a Friday. So if you go out and mean on a... You have to go to one and bring your own places. I used to go out for food on a Thursday. but I'd never go into a nightclub no I don't

1:16:44Pascal Chimbonda:it wasn't a nightclub because I don't think on a Thursday nightclub is really open on a Thursday night Newcastle yeah but it's like come on bad girl

1:17:00but I but I definitely know it wasn't it wasn't it wasn't a nightclub so I'm talking like I definitely knew it wasn't a nightclub. If I told you it wasn't a nightclub, it wasn't a nightclub. Bar? You know, like... Not a bar. When someone organizes something and, you know, like, you get people, you know, like, a DJ come, you know, like... Yeah, finger buffy. You know, like, yeah. No, but they know it's not a nightclub. What's the place in Leeds where you used to... Normans? No, it's like a bar, but sells a bit of food. It's like a chain. revolution yeah like a bar and grill like a bar and grill that's a bar and there's the cell food yeah it's not a night so that's a night club we're gonna people dancing so that's a night club no it's not a night club you're looking for a loophole yeah yeah i think it's again with the going back to the no they never told me when to come home what about hiring a function room upstairs somewhere i think that's what i'm at but you know i was as long as you know right but you know what i was gonna have to lie about that one, you know.

1:18:11No, because you know in the newspaper when you take a picture, yeah, but on the picture, yeah, it's two people

1:18:19Pascal Chimbonda:know in the picture because it was us three, yeah, it was me, Juve and Jibri Cissé, yeah, but on the picture, they take a picture on the newspaper, you see only one person it was Juf and after because I could have when Wai Kim tell us to come to this office yeah but I could say I wasn't there because I'm not on the picture you see only one person on the picture and we say and we three say okay we're going to have to say we were there because me and Jip could say we wasn't there because you see our name how you know we was there maybe you know what I mean and Dufy say no no no no we say all three was there yeah and we just say all three there but they give you know the one they they they they punish is me because I had to do more than Dufy you know that's why send me in the reserve you know what I mean I could say I wasn't there I'm going to have to look at the name of these bars I could say I wasn't there I could say no I wasn't there and he would say okay because you don't see me on the picture I could say I wasn't there yeah because you put the picture but I'm not on it yeah I could lie but I say the truth you know what I mean so what happened botanist you're like a botanist type yeah it's not a nightclub is it but it's a bit of a grey area yeah that's what I mean it's about dancing and drinking yeah yeah if there's this is girls dancing now it's a club He's a club.

1:20:03So he's a botanist, clusters, going out for a meal. So 48 hours, you don't, you're not allowed to, you know? I mean, it's too late now, Pascal, you're retired.

1:20:20Nothing to argue now about it. I don't need to worry about it now. Yeah. Good point.

1:20:33maybe I'm a coach yeah yeah so I need that for my my player if you're a coach not even a harvester no but what like what was the conversation what 16 games you with Sunderland and then you're back back to Spurs in January

1:20:53Pascal Chimbonda:yeah was that a surprise it was a surprise you know what I mean because Because I want, you know, like when Roy Kim left, yeah. And after Ricky, Ricky, Ricky. It's pressure. Yes, pressure. I get the team. I played two games and after like me and him, we wasn't good, you know, like good together. You know what I mean? So, hey, my agent ring me. he told me like Redknapp going to Spurs yeah and he would like me to to come you know what I mean and I said why not back back to Spurs you know without Redknapp Did you like Redknapp? I do like him as a man yeah I like him yeah yeah I thought you'd have been his type of player yeah but I don't know I play when I came I was on the bench, come on, assist two goals.

1:21:59Pascal Chimbonda:For me, that's my start, you know. And, you know, it's backwood, I'm getting on the bench, you know. Like, I was frustrated, you know what I mean? Frustrated, you know, like, because when you're a player, you like to be on the pitch, you know what I mean? You don't like to be on the bench, you know what I mean? Because if I'm a midfield player or a striker, yeah, you put me on the bench, I'm good. because I know as a striker, you come on, midfielder, you come on, I defend there, rally, rally at the right back, rally, rally, you come on the pitch, you know what I mean? You finish all the time the game, no play, you know what I mean?

1:22:35Pascal Chimbonda:That's why I was a bit frustrated, you know, because I wanted to play, you know what I mean? I'm a player, I want to be on the pitch. Winning or losing, I want to be on the pitch, you know. Even when I'm on the bench, I win the game, you know, I'm not happy, you know what I mean? I like to be part of this on the pitch, you know. I mean, that's maybe make me like this, you know. In that situation, like you said, where you're on the bet, are you, would you have a conversation with Harry? Would you knock on his door or anything saying? I don't like to knock on the door as a manager. You know, me, I'm a player like this.

1:23:08Pascal Chimbonda:If I know I better than the player who playing in my place, yeah, I will never go tell you anything, you know what I mean? So you don't play me, you have the reason. So I won't just go to your local room or your office to ask you why I don't play. I'm not the type of player to go ask you why I don't play. Would it have been Karl Luka then? Yeah, Karl Luka, he come from, yeah, it was him, yeah. So, yeah. Because when Harry step, they start to win in game, innit? Yeah. Yeah. So, and I think it didn't, when I should have, When I leave Sunderland, I didn't get registered straight away. You know what I mean?

1:23:48Pascal Chimbonda:That's why I miss the game I should have played. And after that, they start winning, yeah? So that's why I didn't want to change the team. That's why it is, you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. So, yeah. A quick break, gents, from one of our favourites. The creme de la creme of VPM Services. NordVPN. The best in the business. If you don't know what a VPN service is, it allows you to vouch your location anywhere in the world. Anywhere in the world. And where have we been lately? Swindon. We didn't need it in Swindon, but we did need it in Dubai. I did need it in Swindon because I went on the hotel Wi-Fi.

1:24:30Oh, yes, because that's another thing about NordVPN. Security, absolutely unbelievable. And when you go in on those... You know, hotel Wi-Fi's. Just go with that. Everybody can get involved. Public Wi-Fi's. That's your boy. Security. None of them hackers get into your bank details, your passwords. No, no, no. I'll tell you what I'm watching at the minute. Obviously, I'm going to be on my honeymoon soon. I've started watching Dominican Republic who wants to be a millionaire. Yeah. Obviously, there's going to be times where she's getting ready and that. I'm only watching the telly. You've seen all the millionaires over here.

1:25:11Yeah. So now you've got Aunt Domi. I'm Aunt Dominican Republic ones at a minute. Well, that's the thing. You can bounce your location anywhere in the world. So even if you're in the UK and you want to watch Dominican Republic Millionaire, you can get it on over here. Just bounce your location over to Dominican. I can watch anything I want, Chris, from around the world because I've got NordVPN. Sports series. Millionaire. Cut the tosh, lads. What is the script? Do we have an offer? Of course we've got an offer because as under the cost listeners, you've just got to follow the link in the description and you get a heavy, heavy discount and get this, a 30-day money-back guarantee.

1:25:48So if you don't like it, get your money back. That's why they're the goats for me. So whether you're not on the team, were you looking to move, just get out and start playing again?

1:26:00Pascal Chimbonda:Yeah, yeah. I wanted to do, you know what I mean? And Blackburn, you know, Blackburn calls first to say if I was available. I make the move to go to Blackburn. Did you like him?

1:26:18Pascal Chimbonda:I like him. Come see, come see. Yeah. I mean, a little bit. Yeah. Because sometimes me and him, we go on good. Sometimes me and him, we don't go good. But it's Sam, isn't it? So, like I said, the manager always have the last answer. What would bring on those not so good times? You know, like, no, not late, yeah, because with Sam, yeah, you, Sam is a cool coach, cool gaffer, you know, like, you can have a laugh with him, you know, like, before game, you can have a dance with him in the changing room, you know, like, and if you, yeah, yeah, you can have a dance. As if that's the level of a good manager.

1:27:04Yeah, he's got a dance move. He's got some right moves, Sam. He's not like some manager, you know,

1:27:09Pascal Chimbonda:like they go before the game, they go to this office and after, before the game starts, they come to you to say, to have a talk. Sam always in a changing room, you know, if you have a love with him, you know, like if there's music there, you see him give you some, he do some steps, you know, like that kind of, you know, like he put a good mood on, you know what I mean? Yeah, that's good. And he's good as well, you know, like, If you perform good with Sam, you know, he can give you like maybe five days off, you know, like, yes, he's good. You know what I mean? Like a manager like this, you know, he's good.

1:27:41Pascal Chimbonda:You know what I mean? Did he put the shackles on you? You know, he used to love getting forward. Did he just want you to... No, no, no. He didn't put anything, but you know, like, Sam is second ball. You know, like you play with Sam, you know a lot, you know, play football in your half. in your half you have to play through long ball second ball get it there and after the second ball you can play you can play you know like that's I hate you know what I mean because no build up you know you just play through second ball but that's how you get the result you know what I mean What Chris Samba like we got down here did he just moan?

1:28:17Pascal Chimbonda:No no he's a great guy you know what I mean yeah good centre back can play strikers sometimes yeah I think you've read that wrong John yeah I think he said that you like to moan. Oh, yeah, I do. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I'm sorry. Like Chris. Pascal moaning bastard. I do. Yeah. I do. Yes. Who done? I think it gets you through it, doesn't it? Especially if you're not enjoying it, like you said. You know, it's something where you go, oh, damn, I hate that. You know what I mean? Yeah, I do. You know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah, it's tight. Everyone is different, you know what I mean? Yeah, so I keep saying that's not making me a bad guy, you know, if I'm in my morning or, you know what I mean, yes.

1:29:06How did you like Big Sam's pre-season trips? Was he doing Dubai yet?

1:29:11Pascal Chimbonda:No, we do Australia. Australia? Yeah. Were they mid-season trips? Yeah, mid-season. Yeah, mid-season Dubai, yeah. But Australia, when the pre-season, it was good because we go there in Australia and we had a training for a week, you know, and we get one day, I think one day off, yeah? And like, when you get one day off, you know, we play, you want to go out. So we go out in Sydney, you know, to see how Sydney is, you know what I mean? So we go to the club, it was like maybe four players, you know? four players in a club and we was with Jason Roberts yeah he decided to go to he said oh guys I'm going to the toilet yeah we said okay go but when he when he go to the toilet he come face to face with Sam face to face with Sam he go to the toilet he come face to face with Sam and after when he come to us say tell us this he say we say so he was he was cool with you like when he see you he say oh yeah he was cool you know like did he say something to you no he didn't say anything he was cool he was a love you know thing like this and as soon as he said that we we're in a cab yeah we go straight back to the hotel we go back straight back to the hotel next day wake up training we go to the bus so we all sit at the bus some coming the last last one coming Sam is coming he say the the player I see out last night can't get his stuff go back to England yeah we was like oh we was like oh god thank you he didn't see us because we will move back to England you know so who was out yeah there was the four are you out yeah four were out but he was more than four players out yeah yeah but he just see only one player just saw Jason Roberts yeah he saw Jason Roberts and he say the player but Jason Roberts didn't you know like some player would say oh Gaffer I wasn't on my own he was there he was there he was there but he didn't say he didn't say anything to the Gaffer say oh you know and he just take it take it for him you know what I mean and made oh he was laughing He has to go home on his own?

1:31:54He has to go back to England. Pack his stuff and go back to England. Yes. I like how Sam's played it as well. You've seen him in the toilet and he's just like, taking a mint imperial for a day. Having a good end? He's fucking going home in the morning. Like I say, the player I see, get off of the bus right now, pack his stuff and go back to England. It's not an easy flight, it's not easy to get home is it? Yeah, and he's back on the economic. You know, like no on the... No, come on Sam, that's out of order. He's back in the economic, you know, like, and after we're training, you know, like, and we see a plane, you say, oh, Joseph Roberts is...

1:32:41We see a plane in training, you say, oh, Joseph Roberts is... Oh man You imagine We had four players Was neck to neck With him in the toilet You know what I mean Wow We all will fall We'll go back to England I told you We were laughing Oh man Thing is Sam knows Jason Roberts Not in there on his own Is he Yeah But He didn't see the rest Yeah He see only Jason But he didn't see You imagine he see us Yeah With her and his red wine Where are they No but we have Because with him, it's freedom with some, you know what I mean? Dubai, we go Dubai, you know what I mean? You play, but you go Dubai, we think we're going for training.

1:33:26We don't do any training. Just go relaxing there. Do you think that's like one of his tactics as well, for getting the lads on his side, get him playing his football, go for a brick wall for him? Yeah, yeah, yeah, he'll give you the other side.

1:33:38Pascal Chimbonda:You know what I mean? You go for the manager, he'll give you all this, you know what I mean? Of course you will go in the world for, you know what I mean? You will do anything you say, you know what I mean? If he tell you to put your head down there, you will put your head down there. That's the way you play, you know what I mean? Oh, he's like... Hey man, in training, you can't just... Four defenders, if you have to do only head, that's you do only head. You take four defenders, float the ball in the air, head it there, head it there, that's you do, yeah. Bet you were warning them, weren't you?

1:34:09I do, yeah, yeah, I was. Yeah, yeah. You know, like me, I laugh. You know, when he say, when, you know, like the manager say, oh, defender one side and striker one side.

1:34:20Pascal Chimbonda:Yeah. That's why I say, oh, mate. You know what I mean? You see they do finishing and you go do defensive thing, tackling, heading. Oh man. Yeah. Oh, this type of... When you see the striker go to finish, do finishing, little game, you know, and you go like head the ball or do throwing. Of course you're like, oh, no. Yeah, when you're training, you like to play football, play game, little game, you know, possession ball, you know, like, yes. That's what I like. And then you got a call from Neil Warnock. Yeah. to go to QPR. Yeah, but him, you know, like, he's a strange guy, man. You know, like, I meet, you know, before to go to QPR, yeah?

1:35:14Pascal Chimbonda:I go to this house, yeah? He say, oh, yes, Pascal, I'm happy you're coming, you know, like, oh, I'm so happy. His wife was there, you know, like, yeah, I'm so happy, you know, like, you will do good for us, you know, and we're getting promoted because it was top of the league, you know. And I say, yes, I say, yes. He said, when you're ready to play, you told me and you play because I wasn't training with Blackburn, you know what I mean? So I say, okay, when I'm ready, Gaffa are coming, you know what I mean? I tell you when I'm ready, fit to play. Did you stop playing at Blackburn at this point?

1:35:53Pascal Chimbonda:Yeah, because sometimes not to be involved in the team anymore. after the seven, we lost 7-1 against Man United. And after the game, you know, like Paul Robinson, the keeper, come to me and say, oh, Pascal, it looks like you didn't want to play. I say, what do you mean I didn't want to play? He say, yes, like normally you... I say, man, you can set seven goals, you know? Did you try to even stop one? You know what I mean? And you come to me and say, oh, you didn't want to play. I say, yes. I say, we all play bad. Seven, seven, why you come point only one player? You know what I mean? So everyone play bad because you can see, you can see, even you can see seven goals.

1:36:43Pascal Chimbonda:You know what I mean? So you didn't try your best in a goal. You know what I mean? But, but only me, you come to me and say that. Yeah, we need a little argument after the game, after the game. And after some see that, some say, oh, calm. Everyone sit down there. Someone's like mad, you know. He comes face to face to me. I was sitting there. He stood front of me saying, everyone was bad, yeah. But he say, Pascal, I never see you be so bad like this. I say, yeah. You know what I mean? I said, I play against my United. I play on my left back. That game, I wasn't even supposed to play. that game, I was supposed to be on the bench.

1:37:28Pascal Chimbonda:But Jive was girl Jive been ill, yeah, and that's why I play, you know, I mean, in my head I wasn't going to play that game, but he played me, you know. Were you up all night doing your hair? No, in my head I wasn't, you know, like with Sami, I was playing, I wasn't playing, I was playing, I was, you know, like, I was frustrated, you know, and he didn't let me go. I was going to go to West Ham, he didn't let me go. You know, all this was in my head, you know what I mean? And after that, He called me apart in the office, he said, from today, I don't want to see you involved. You won't be involved in my team.

1:38:09Pascal Chimbonda:You can come in training on your own or do whatever you want, but at that day, I don't want you being involved in the team. Wow. Were you that bad? In your opinion? Yeah. You know, like when you watch the game, the clip of the game, you see the seventh goal? Yeah, you see me on the seventh goal. Like all the videos, seventh goal, you see me on that seventh goal. You know what I mean? I say, whoa. Oh, man. It's not like you don't see me on one or two, but the seventh goal, you see me in it. The seventh goal, you see me in it. The seventh goal. I say, wow, the seventh goal. I was really bad. We're not bad.

1:39:01You're there. You're there all the other parts for all seven. You know, like when you make a mistake, yeah, it's your fault when you consider goal. You say, oh, you put your arm up, you know, you say my teammate is me. Team YMCA. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:39:16Pascal Chimbonda:You can say me, me, me, me, me. Oh, mate. It was really bad, you know what I mean? I told you we didn't pass the halfway line. It was defense, defense, defense, you know, like. And I was at Nani, man, Nani. And, you know, Nani on the end of when he was getting really good, you know, like, oh, man. So you see me on all the video. And that's the time he told me I don't want to see you be involved. You won't be involved. And that time he left as well, you know what I mean? He been sacked. Oh, did he? Oh, did he? Yeah, there was a Venkis coming, the new owner coming, and they sack him and they put Steve Keane in this position.

1:40:02So he played a role, really? No, yeah, maybe, you know what I mean? Rub it in a bit more. You think I was going to come back to the team when Sam leave. But Steve Keane say, no, I can't get you back because… I've seen the video.

1:40:17Pascal Chimbonda:No, because of Sam, you know what I mean? because it won't be nice if I took you back because you know what I mean? He was already there. He was an assistant. He was an assistant. So I said, okay. And after when the QPR come, I meet Warnock at his house. He say yes. And when I go there, you know, like he was a, Warnock is calm. He make me think like a red nap. You know, like, you know, when you see him, he look like, same like red nap. But, But Tarab was there. Tarab was his captain, you know, scoring 20 goals. And Tarab was a king. I had Kupia, king. Adele. Adele, yeah. Could do anything he wanted.

1:41:05Pascal Chimbonda:If he'd say today he don't training, he don't training. He was a king. But he was performed on the pitch. So when you perform on the pitch, I think by itself he bring Kupia on his own. of Premier League. So when I come fully fit, go see him and say, look, I'm fully fit, I'm ready to play. And he never played me. And one time he played me one game, as a left back, and after he said, you know what? After the game he came to me and said, don't be involved anymore. You know what I mean? He said, I don't want you to be involved anymore. I said, okay. I say, you're the manager, what do you want me to say?

1:41:50I've seen this film before. It's happened three or four times. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, it happened to me like maybe a couple of months before and it happened to me again.

1:41:57Pascal Chimbonda:I say, okay, I won't argue with you because everything you told me when I come to your house, yeah, it was just bullshit, you know, it's bollocks. So me, why are you going to argue with someone? It's not truly, it's, look, you're talking to me, you look away and you're red, you know. No, it's okay. It's not a problem. Your team, you're first in the league, you're happy, you're going to get promoted. Well, I'd say, leave. I just stay home, do my things, we're still working, and wait for the next movie was at Doncaster, you know what I mean? So, yeah. Were you on loan at Doncaster? No, no, I just signed, yeah, yeah.

1:42:38I mean, we've had quite a few lads on that spoke about that season. How was it for...

1:42:52That season. Spit it out, spit it out. It was unbelievable, wasn't it? Yeah, we got a good squad, didn't it? When you see the squad, you see... On paper, yeah. On paper, it looked really good, like a Premier League team, didn't it? Yeah. But on the pitch...

1:43:11But we wasn't. I feel as though we've got two contrasting opinions here. Because we wasn't training together, you know? Yeah, it was just... It was weird, you know? I was injured for most of it, but... What was the issue?

1:43:29Pascal Chimbonda:We got players on loan. So they're training with their team, yeah? They're training, like, if you're on loan from West Ham, you're training all week with maybe West Ham, and after, you know, weekend, they come play with us. and we got Abib Bey was was living in France yeah just used to be called for the game Abib he was living in France get flight in flight then you have a suitcase down the corridor yeah he live in France and he comes play straight away on the weekend yeah well then fuck off after Yeah? You fuck off, back to France after the game. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Never training with us and he's, yeah.

1:44:15Pascal Chimbonda:He could've done killing on duty-free fags, couldn't he? Yeah, so like, player wasn't on the standard, you know what I mean? And I think, on the paper, like you say, it was good. But as a group, yeah, I don't think we click, you know? It was never going to work because there was a lot of good lads already there. Yeah, that's it, yeah, yeah. And then when things like this happen, when Habib's just turned up for games, all the other lads were like, what can I do? We're training all week and we don't even play, you know what I mean? So I think he has to put a group, you know, like separate, you know, like one group there, one group there, one group there, you know, like that's the thing, you know what I mean?

1:44:54Pascal Chimbonda:And I think Gino was just the manager, you know what I mean? I don't think Gino was like put a group. He let us get away with murder. Yeah, yeah, yeah. so that's that's that's the things you know what I mean what do you mean by murder like just I had class coming in on a Saturday just for a game yeah flying in as murder I like a lot of times the lads are in remember when Jufy wasn't in that for the meeting were you in the meeting or were you with Jufy Saunders had a meeting talking about the game on the Saturday and decides like Jufy didn't close down somebody and he said Jufy you need to do better here you need to sprint yeah Do you know what I mean?

1:45:34And Jufy wasn't even in yet.

1:45:38I think you might have been with him. I don't think you were in either. I was in Jed as well. Remember I was in Jed as well.

1:45:49Pascal Chimbonda:My hip, I was in Jed. I didn't play much game with doing it. I was in Jed there, you know what I mean? I was in Jed. Maybe I was in Jed. Only one thing has happened. I lost the plot once do you remember that I wouldn't have been there I'd have been coming back from injury oh mate I lost the plot I even I even speak bad to Dino you know what I mean and I have to you know myself you know go see him after training and tell him I'm apologised you know because that wasn't me you know what I mean I was just what happened no we was training you know like when you do a game yeah but we was losing so bad and after Dino was playing with us, you know what I mean?

1:46:34Pascal Chimbonda:And I just maybe tell him like a bad word, you know? And I shouldn't say that, you know, because he's my coach, you know what I mean? And I should have shown him some respect, you know? And I think at that time, I didn't, the frustration can take over, you know what I mean? And it just gone. And after, I realized after that, like it was so bad because even the player, like look at Dino, how a player talks to you like this, and you don't say anything. And I have to go to this office and tell him, no, I apologize. I will accept any permission he gave me because I feel bad for him the way I talk to him.

1:47:23Pascal Chimbonda:you know what I mean? Yeah, so that's why, you know, I mean, that's it. He wasn't have enough grip, you know, in the group, you know, like to be, you know, like, yeah. Because he's a good guy, you know. There was nearly fallouts every week, wasn't there? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Every week we play like, it's like a tension, man. Yeah, like, wow, people say, fuck off to this, this, this, like, wow. It's like, but we, on the paper, it's good. but as a group the worst having the worst group yeah the worst group yeah were you there when I should have mentioned this to Dino when again there was arguments after a game and Johnny Oster had said something and then Jufy said something yeah yeah yeah and Saunders has gone right I tell you what if you've never won anything you haven't got an opinion and you see like the way you say this right now you speak the same like the way he said you know like it look like it's you know just speaking right now yeah yeah like did you ever pipe up?

1:48:39no I wasn't I was injured yeah it was injured I was just stood but I was in the changing room for this but like and it was unbelievable man

1:48:49Pascal Chimbonda:Alunga was alright wasn't he? Yeah Alunga he's a good guy yeah yeah yeah you could he could go around with everyone in there you know what I mean but you remember like I don't know if you were you were still there someone this final shirt in the changing room you remember that? You don't remember that? What? Someone's shirt in the changing room you don't remember that one? Oh mate someone someone have a poo in the changing room. Seriously, someone have a put in the changing room. You remember that? Oh, man. Oh, that was the pain. That was so bad, man. That was so bad. Someone have a shit in the changing room.

1:49:37You don't remember that? Oh, man. Your things you don't remember, man. Oh, man. We're in the changing room. You know like the change home is there and you got a shower there. Yeah. The shower like you know like when you come just out there shower there. That is shit there. In the shower? Someone shit there.

1:49:59Someone just popping his ass there. Yeah, just shit there. Unbelievable man. You need to dig and find out all that work. I'll find out who that was. Oh mate. You never found out who it was? No. No. No. Oh God. Dirty power test. But like, that's the year we go down, isn't it? If it was, no, if it was click,

1:50:24Pascal Chimbonda:I think if it was click together, man, we could do a good, good thing there, you know what I mean? Yeah. I think I came back and I was at Leicester. Did you have a head loss that day? Can you remember? I don't know if you'll remember it. We were getting beat, I might have three or four before halftime. That's up. I'm not laughing at that. I think we get I think we get all the time innit yeah and I remember you just looked like you'd had enough like half an hour on the clock and you're like get me out of here right and I'm always certain the balls bounce in like near the halfway line and you've just volleyed it out of play is that right that's right yeah that's right it was like you just you just had enough I've had enough of you wallop Yeah, I did, I did, I did, I did.

1:51:18Pascal Chimbonda:We were so bad, man. You know, like when you play, when you play, yeah, on the paper, we were so great. Like we could play against Premier League team on the paper, you know, but on the pitch, man, it was like, you know, like when you're losing every week, you say, oh, mate, wow. You go home, they say, oh, what happened to you? I'll get beat. Yeah, next week, oh, what happened? I'll get beat. You know what I mean? I remember one time, you know, like, Dino told me, like, like, we was playing in London, I think, so I came in London, and Dino said, after the game, no one stayed down in London. I was still living in Essex, you know what I mean?

1:51:58Pascal Chimbonda:So it was like, we was playing maybe before New Year, yeah? I mean, after the game, we lost. I said, no, Pernagona, to traveling back in Darbos, to go back to Donny, you know what I mean? I just stay home. No, I just stay home, yeah, because I live there, yeah? I'm not living in Doncaster, so why I can't stay home? You know what I mean? We can laugh about it now. Yeah, we do laugh, yeah, yeah, because that's a good experience. That's a good experience in a career sometimes, you know what I mean? Remember Lamin Diyata? Yeah, Lamin Diyata, yeah, yeah, yeah. He was about 48 wasn't he? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

1:52:46No, it's my good pal, yeah. He's made from his grandad. It's my good pal, don't you? Went to school with his grandad. Lovely fella. No. Lovely fella. No. I think it's my age, it's my age. Is he? Yeah, it's my age. Yeah. We were playing Leicester, we were falling on the diamond bar at halftime.

1:53:14Pascal Chimbonda:We get bit a lot, man. I don't think I've ever been bit like this in my whole career, you know what I mean? Every week. Oh dear. Did you enjoy it or did you, might be a stupid question, did you like it in a weird way or was it just a bad time? No, I did sometimes enjoy it, you know what I mean? Because of change your womb, you're there. because I didn't play, I wasn't playing long, you know what I mean? So I enjoyed to be in a group, you know what I mean? Back in a group, you know, with a good player, you know what I mean? On the paper, like you say, you know what I mean? Because...

1:53:55So when you left Doncaster, you look at the Market Drayton town team and you thought, we've got a good team on paper. No, the team you see after that, I never played for my career. Oh, did you not?

1:54:07Pascal Chimbonda:No, no. I just knew the manager and sometimes I go training there because to just stay in shape, but I never played there. I never played, no. No. Never played on the team, yeah. After leaving, did you... Leaving Doney. How old were you? When I left Doney, I'm back in France, I think. And after I just stopped my career there because back in... I say, oh, I will finish in France. I go to Championship in France. I say, oh, we're finishing funds. But when I go in funds, the chairman do the team, you know what I mean? You know, like the chairman involved in a team sheet, you know, like he tell the manager who to play, things like this.

1:54:51Pascal Chimbonda:And just, this football just, whoa, get fed up with this, you know what I mean? I just say, I stop. What age were you then? 36, no 48.

1:55:06Levine's still playing

1:55:10He's just missed out on the 23 squad If you've been in Morocco You didn't see him there Nah He wasn't Oh was he there?

1:55:17Pascal Chimbonda:He's on the bench of Senegal's coaching staff I said to Dean last week You only signed him Because he could get your Real Madrid tickets He got us tickets for the El Clásico

1:55:36He's a good guy, but Dino never play him, innit? I'm not surprised.

1:55:46Even on paper, he was cute.

1:55:52He's a player, he's a player. He's a good defender.

1:55:58Pascal Chimbonda:Yeah, he had a good career, didn't he? Yeah, definitely. No, but so, we got our team. We got our team. I don't know if you were there, but we did one of them where we played somebody on the South Coast on the Saturday, but stayed down for the game on the Tuesday. It was like, say, Bournemouth, Southampton or something like that. So we stayed down. Are you playing Billy Sharpie with us or with Southampton? I think, He'll have been... Southampton, Southampton. Yeah. Yeah, it was Southampton. He left, yeah, yeah. And one of the lads has found... I can't wait to hear what's coming. One of the lads has on Facebook seen Jufy out.

1:56:39Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I was there, I was there. No, I was there. I wasn't out. Yeah. I was there. I think it's only him go out. He was meeting one of his mates. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it was there, you know, on them Facebook profiles, advertising the night. showing pictures and Jufy's there and all the lads have seen it the night before a game and Saunders knows about it but he's he's pulled up to one side and went I'll just keep it maybe don't be on the promotional material yeah we stay

1:57:13Pascal Chimbonda:in the south I remember we stay in that game we play south something yeah yeah where did you play your best football where yeah Wigan and I would say Spurs Blackburn as well you know what I mean even I did yeah Who's your favourite manager? I would put two in the bag yeah I would say the Wigan one Paul Paul Jewell yeah Paul Paul Jewell and Spurs one Martin Jewell Martin Jewell and Paul Jewell yeah that's two good managers I think hard you know I mean they give you freedom you know that freedom I like you know what I mean yeah so is that the best best way to get Pascal playing well just let you crack on and do what you want but that's you do you yeah if you want a player to perform you know you have to give him this freedom you know what I mean give him his freedom but with you know what do you call this things to not do you know what I mean clip the wings like Thursday nights just food Thursday night just food just food how would you look back on it would you do it differently yeah stuff like that yeah yeah if I if I have to get back turn the clock back yeah he have plenty of things I would do differently you know like maybe like you say training more hard yeah training harder maybe more listening you know what I mean to the to the manager you know and and see football in other aspects of the football, see it differently as well, you know what I mean?

1:58:59Pascal Chimbonda:So, yeah. You've gone for 20 million. In fees. 20 million in fees, give a tech. Yes, I could go, you know what I mean? More high, but I should have worked more hard, you know?

1:59:19But did you enjoy it? Oh, football? Yeah. Oh, man, I enjoy it, man. I really enjoy the changing room vibe, you know, like everything, you know, like, you know, like sometimes I'm more happy to spend time in the changing room that's going home, you know, I mean, just stay in the changing room, have a talk with the lads. You know, every time you come in the morning, you get a story, you have a story, you know, you have a story every time in the morning, a story, a story, yeah.

1:59:49Pascal Chimbonda:I miss these things, you know, I mean, that's in football, you know, like, you maybe never had this again, you know, I mean, maybe I never had this again. Or if I'm coaching a team, maybe I will have this, but yeah, maybe I never had this again. But seriously, like, I enjoy it. I enjoy it bit to bit and I won't put anything away, you know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah, football. Did you? Yeah. Yeah, I don't miss it, but I did. enjoyed most of it yeah a lot of injuries and if you I was I was so glad that I didn't have any bad injury you know like I missed like a month and month like people do a year you know like me injury maybe we missed a week you know like a week that's it but I never have like any bad long term yeah long term injury like other players they missed like 20 game or a year game you know what I mean so that's That's good, that's mean I'm looking after myself really good.

2:00:57Were we going to a bistro or nightclub? So yeah, so if you've got Sunday afternoon, you're going out for a drink, which three team mates are you taking with or you've played with? I would take Jufy. Yeah. Yeah.

2:01:18Pascal Chimbonda:I will take

2:01:24Pascal Chimbonda:Jason Roberts and I will take

2:01:34Elunga

2:01:35Pascal Chimbonda:Erita Elunga Do you still speak to him by the way? Yeah we do Is he alright? Yeah he's a big guy now Is he? Yeah, he's the president of Congo or something. The president of Congo? No, the football federation. No, no, no. He's done well for himself. No, he's done good. He's the only one that used to tell Jufy. Him and Jufy used to. Because Jufy's car got stingy from the training ground. No, Jufy, you can't tell him anything. when you have something in his head he said even you tell him this he will always come say oh he's two ballon d 'or Africa you know what I mean so when he say that you have to he shut your mouth and you know what I mean yeah that's he will say oh what do you win I'm two ballon I'm two ballon d 'or Africa so what do you win you have something no so yeah now that's three people I will I will definitely I know I will have a good time with those three people yeah definitely yes and who's your 20 quid on who do you think the Phantom Shitter is John Oster yeah he's capable isn't he capable

2:02:56Pascal Chimbonda:he's capable more than capable he is capable but no Duny yeah that's that's going to have to stay in my locker forever, you know what I mean? We never forget that time there, you know what I mean? It was short, but it was really exciting. I honestly thought you were on about the poo there. I did. Did you or not? It was short. It was short, but... It was short as shit. But it was good, my boy. Bowtree. Bowtree. yeah it was good my boy yeah cheers mate Pascal thank you very much brilliant that yeah it was mate thank you appreciate your time that shit that shit that shit man that'll stick to me you can still see it been a great team on paper who done that I'll find out in the changing room like you used the changing room like someone just sat there

2:04:09You know, I think it's maybe someone walking there, innit? Because if you find a shed there when you're coming in the morning,

2:04:17Pascal Chimbonda:that means someone walking there, you know, cleaning the place, yeah? And just do this shed there and to make like it's a player, don't I? You know what I mean? Yeah. Because he was a player. I think he was a player, yeah. You think? I think so, yeah. I'll try and find out. Thank you.

New series. Eight years deep. Same nonsense.

We’re kicking things off with a belter… Pascal Chimbonda and trust us, he delivers. Perhaps the most laid-back man in the world, but my word he’s got some stories.

Rocking up at Wigan without speaking a word of English, his time there was eventful on and off the pitch. A brilliant debut season saw him earn a shock call-up to France’s World Cup squad but it all ended in dramatic fashion when he handed in a transfer request in the dressing room straight after the final game of the season.

With front-row seats for Zidane’s infamous headbutt, we find out exactly what Wigan’s Pascal Chimbonda says to French legend Zizou after he’s potentially cost him a World Cup winners’ medal.

Dubbed Roy Keane’s “worst ever signing”, we dig into what really went wrong between them and along the way hear plenty of stories about being pinned up by Big Dunc, Jimmy Bullard’s antics, and sharing a dressing room with Browny at Doncaster.
