Key Concepts

Types of People in Networking

  • Those Who Wait for Invitations: Typically remain at the bottom of the hierarchy, especially in elite circles.
  • Those Who Walk in Like They Belong: Assertive individuals who take the initiative to enter exclusive spaces.

The Reality of High-Net-Worth Circles

  • Invitations are rarely handed out; wealthy individuals expect newcomers to already be present in the room.
  • Being recognized rather than recruited is crucial in affluent environments.

---

The Story of Rags DeLuca

Background

  • Rags DeLuca grew up in humble beginnings with a father who ran a diner and a mother working at a casino.
  • His aspiration was not merely to observe the wealthy but to be part of their circles.

Key Event

  • Rags learns of a high-stakes poker game in Manhattan, frequented by billionaires and influential figures, and takes the initiative to attend.

Strategy for Entry

  1. Identify the Weak Link: Rags spots Charlie Knuckles, a less wealthy individual in the elite space.
  2. Approach with Confidence: He interacts with Charlie casually, leveraging the idea that everyone knows him to gain entry.
  3. Blend In: Once inside, Rags avoids being overly talkative or desperate, allowing conversations to flow naturally.

Insights on Interacting with Affluent Individuals

  • Avoid Over-Explaining: The wealthy can sense desperation; confidence is key.
  • Ask Thoughtful Questions: Rags engages a billionaire by commenting on poker dynamics, elevating the conversation to an equal footing.

---

Steps to Enter Elite Circles

  1. Stop Asking for Permission: Take proactive steps to find ways in without waiting for an invitation.
  2. Act Like an Equal: Project confidence; rich individuals prefer to hire peers rather than admirers.
  3. Listen More than You Speak: Observing allows others to share about themselves, creating a sense of belonging.
  4. Attach to the Right People: Find individuals who have access, even if they are not wealthy themselves, to gain entry.
  5. Own Your Space: Once inside, act confidently and refrain from proving yourself excessively.

---

Conclusion

  • Mark Satterfield concludes by reiterating that success in gaining access to high-net-worth individuals hinges on the mindset of belonging rather than waiting for invitations. He encourages listeners to approach exclusive environments confidently, embodying the attitude that they were always meant to be there.

0:01Hello, this is Mark Satterfield and welcome to the Velvet Rope Playbook. Tonight's chapter, How Rags DeLuca Got in the Room Without Begging for an Invitation. There are two kinds of people in the world. There are the ones who wait to be invited, and there are the ones who walk in like they belong. And when it comes to high net worth clients, power players, and luxury markets, if you're waiting for an invitation, you'll be waiting a long time. The rich don't send out invites. They expect you to already be there. But today I'm going to tell you about a guy named Rags DeLuca, a kid who had zero connections, no fancy background, and not a single name in his Rolodex.

0:43Yet somehow, he got inside the room where the real money moves were made, without begging, faking, or trying too hard. And by the end of this episode, you'll know exactly how to do the same. By the way, if you're enjoying this chapter and want to learn how to use storytelling as a tool for getting more affluent clients, you need to read my latest book about storytelling, which you can do by going to getwealthyclients.com for all the details. Matter of fact, I'm giving away a few copies for free, so you want to get in on this before I change my mind. That's getwealthyclients.com. Okay, Rags DeLuca wasn't born into luxury.

1:26Hell, the guy wasn't even born into middle-class comfort. His dad ran a diner in Atlantic City. His mom worked the graveyard shift at a casino. And Rags? Well, Rags spent most of his early years watching high rollers from the wrong side of the velvet rope. But he wanted in. Not just to look around, not to ask for autographs. He wanted to be one of them. But there was one big problem. Rich people don't recruit. They recognize. Nobody was going to tap him on the shoulder and say, hey kid, come sit down with the winners. If he wanted in, he had to figure out a way to get in. So one night, Rags hears about a private poker game at a rooftop club in Manhattan.

2:08Not just any game. This was where the billionaires, hedge fund guys, and real estate moguls played. Now, Rags wasn't invited, didn't know a single person there, but he had one advantage. He knew the game. Not just poker, but how rich people operate. So instead of trying to sneak in or name drop someone he didn't know, he did something smarter. He found the weakest link. Every private club, elite event, and luxury gathering has one thing in common. There's always someone who doesn't belong, but was brought in by somebody else. So Rags looks around and spots a guy named Charlie Knuckles. Now, Charlie was money adjacent, not rich himself, but a guy who ran errands for rich people.

2:54And Rags? He walks right up to Charlie like they've been friends for years and says, Charlie, what the hell are you doing here? Charlie stares at him. You know me? Rags smirks. Everyone knows you, Charlie. Come on, let's grab a drink. Now, what happens? Charlie, wanting to look like he belongs, let Rags tag along. And just like that, Rags is inside. He's not pretending to be a billionaire. He's not trying to impress anyone. He's just there, talking, listening, blending in. And before long, he's at a table with a guy who owns half of Miami. Now, here's where most people screw up. They get inside the room and immediately blow it.

3:35They start talking too much. They over-explain their credentials. They try too hard to prove they belong. And what happens? The rich can smell desperation a mile away, but Rags, he doesn't try to sell himself. He just says, you ever notice the guys who talk the most at poker games usually lose the hardest? The billionaire across from him grins. You play? Rags shrugs. Only when I know I'm gonna win. And just like that, they're talking like equals. Not because Rags faked it, but because he acted like he had every right to be there. Now, if you're looking at high net worth circles, exclusive clubs, and top tier clients thinking, how the hell do I get in?

4:18Here's what you do. Step one, stop asking for permission. Nobody's going to invite you. You have to find a way in. Step two, never act like a fan. Rich people don't hire admirers. They hire equals. Step three, Talk less, observe more. If you let people talk about themselves, they'll assume you belong. Step four, attach yourself to the right people. Find the weak link, the assistant, the friend of a friend, the vendor who works the event. That's your way in. Step five, when you're in, own it. No over-explaining, no proving yourself, just act like you belong. because at the end of the proverbial day, it's not about waiting for an invite.

5:05It's about showing up and making them assume you were always meant to be there. So the next time you see an exclusive event, a luxury market, or a high net worth circle that you want to be a part of, don't wait. Don't ask. Find a way in. Walk in like you belong and own the room because the root, they don't recruit, they recognize. And if you move right, they'll assume you were one of them all along. This is Mark Satterfield.
