01Hello, this is Mark Satterfield, and welcome to the Velvet Rope Podcast. Tonight's chapter, The Exclusivity Effect. How to use scarcity to increase your fees and get paid more with less work. All right, let's talk about one of the most powerful psychological levers you can pull when it comes to charging higher fees, exclusivity. Or put another way, how to make your services feel so rare and valuable that people line up to pay you more while you do less. We're diving into why high prices attract high caliber clients and how to use the perceived scarcity framework to make your services feel exclusive, even if you technically have unlimited spots, and a case study about a business consultant who went from charging $5 ,000 to pulling in$250 ,000 per client overnight.

59By the way, if you're enjoying this episode and want to learn how to use storytelling as a tool for getting more affluent clients, head on over to velvetropestoryselling.com for the details. That's velvetropestoryselling.com. Okay, let's get into it. First, let's debunk a myth. People don't pay for your services because of how hard you work or how many hours you put in. They pay based on the perceived value. And one of the easiest ways to signal high value? A high price. Imagine two restaurants side by side. One has a$7 steak. The other has a$97 steak. If I asked you which steak is better, you're probably going to assume it's the$97 one, even if you've never tasted either.

53Why? Because our brains associate price with quality. Same thing applies to your business. If you charge low prices, you attract clients who nitpick, haggle, and generally make your life miserable. But when you charge a premium, you attract a different breed. Clients who respect your expertise, follow your process, and don't treat you like their personal servant. Let me tell you about my friend Jake, a consultant who was stuck in the$5 ,000 pricing rut. His clients treated him like an employee, constantly asking for revisions, hand-holding, and basically bleeding him dry. Then one day, he made a simple shift.

36He raised his fee to$50 ,000. Guess what happened? His business didn't collapse. Instead, he got better clients, did less work, and actually enjoyed his job again. High prices don't just bring in more money. They create better relationships with your clients. Now, let's talk about how to make your service feel exclusive, even if you technically have unlimited capacity. People want what they can't have. It's human nature. That's why exclusive nightclubs have lines around the doors, why luxury brands create limited edition releases, and why service businesses that create the illusion of scarcity command higher fees.

23But here's the kicker. You don't actually need to limit your availability. You just need to create the perception of exclusivity. Let's discuss how. One, application-only access. One of the easiest ways to create exclusivity is by requiring an application process. Instead of letting anyone hire you, make them apply. This instantly shifts the dynamic from I need clients to clients need to prove they're a fit for me. Try this. Instead of saying I have availability for new clients, say I'm currently reviewing applications to work with me. If you'd like to be considered, fill out the form here. That subtle shift alone filters out tire kickers and attracts serious clients.

142. Strict Qualification Criteria Another way to create perceived scarcity is by setting high qualification criteria. Maybe you only work with clients who've already hit a certain revenue milestone. Maybe they need to have a particular mindset. Whatever it is, make it clear that not everyone qualifies. For example, a financial advisor I know only works with people who have a net worth of$5 million. That one rule allows him to charge premium fees because his clients perceive his service as being reserved for the elite. 3. Limited Enrollment Windows Even if you can technically take clients any time, create artificial deadlines.

03Open enrollment once per quarter, or only take a handful of clients at a time. This urgency makes people act faster and increases perceived value. I had a client who ran a business coaching program. She used to have rolling enrollment, but when she switched to opening her doors just twice a year, she saw her sales skyrocket and her fees triple. Now, let me tell you about Brian. Brian was a smart guy, a consultant with a decade of experience. But like a lot of service providers, he was undercharging. He had a handful of$5 ,000 clients that, you know, kept him busy, but burned out. He felt stuck.

49Then he made a radical shift. He did three things. First, he repositioned himself as a trusted advisor, not a service provider. Instead of selling consulting hours, he started selling strategic transformation. Two, he created exclusivity. He stopped taking clients who weren't already doing$10 million in revenue and made his service by invitation only. And finally, he raised his fees overnight. Instead of charging$5 ,000 per project, he started at$250 ,000. Now here's the crazy part. The moment he made these changes, he didn't just get one client at $250 ,000. He got three. And those three clients were easier to work with than any of his$5 ,000.

42clients. Why? Because he shifted the perceived value. When people saw that his service was exclusive and high ticket, they automatically assumed it was worth it. Okay, so how do you take what we just talked about and implement it in your own business? Here's a simple exercise. Think about a time when you raised your prices and got a better client. If you haven't done this yet, Try raising your fees slightly and see what happens. Two, have you ever created scarcity, intentionally or not, that made your service feel more desirable? Maybe you were fully booked and someone begged to work with you.

24That's a story worth telling. And three, what's your dream client? Imagine you could only work with the top 1 % of your industry. What criteria would you set? Write that down. Once you have these elements, start weaving them into your messaging. Talk about your process. Share client success stories. Make people feel like they need to qualify to work with you. Remember, exclusivity isn't just about charging more. It's about creating a business that attracts the right clients while giving you more freedom. When you make your service feel rare, people will fight to work with you. So start applying the perceived scarcity framework today.

13Set higher standards, qualify your clients, raise your fees, and watch as the right people line up to pay you what you're worth. Because the truth is, the more exclusive you make your service, the easier it is to get paid more while doing less. This is Mark Satterfield.
