Key Takeaways

The Problem with Traditional Networking

  • Burnout from Networking: Fast Freddie attended countless events, only to find them unproductive.
  • Surface-Level Connections: Networking often results in superficial conversations and connections that lead to no significant business opportunities.

The Shift in Strategy

  • Observation of the Elite: At a networking event, Freddie realizes that successful individuals do not engage in typical networking; instead, they curate their circles.
  • Creating Meaningful Connections: Fast Freddie decides to engage differently by sending a drink to a notable financier, Lance Waverly, instead of trying to force a conversation.

The New Approach

  • Building Relationships Over Networking: Freddie's strategy revolves around creating genuine connections rather than collecting business cards.
  • Being Interesting First: By focusing on shared interests rather than selling himself, Freddie intrigued Waverly and secured a follow-up meeting.

Steps to Effective Networking with Wealthy Clients

  1. Avoid Traditional Networking Events: Refrain from attending events filled with individuals seeking business.
  2. Seek Elite Circles: Engage in environments where wealthy individuals congregate, such as charity events or exclusive clubs.
  3. Play the Long Game: Introduce yourself casually without an immediate sales pitch.
  4. Create Effortless Connections: Focus on being interesting and valuable before attempting to sell.

Conclusion Fast Freddie's story serves as a compelling lesson in the art of networking with high-net-worth individuals. By abandoning traditional methods and focusing on genuine relationship-building, he successfully tripled his business. Mark Satterfield encourages listeners to adopt a similar mindset, emphasizing the importance of being in the right circles and fostering trust, rather than merely chasing connections.

0:01Hello, this is Mark Satterfield, and welcome to the Velvet Rope Playbook. Tonight's chapter, Why Fast Freddy Ditched Networking and Tripled His Business. Fast Freddy Fontana was done. He had spent years going to every networking event, industry mixer, and high-end cocktail hour he could find. He had enough business cards to wallpaper a penthouse, enough LinkedIn connections to fill a small stadium. And yet, none of it actually got him the high net worth clients he wanted. Until the night he ditched networking as usual and figured out the real way to build connections with the wealthy. And by the end of this episode, you'll know exactly why most networking is a waste of time and what actually works if you want to attract serious clients.

0:51By the way, if you're enjoying this episode and want to learn how to use storytelling as a tool for getting more affluent clients, You need to read my latest books by going to GetWealthyClients.com for all the details. That's GetWealthyClients.com. Okay, let's get into it. Fast Freddy wasn't a slouch. He was a financial consultant who had built a solid career. Not flashy, but respectable. And like every ambitious professional, he'd been told, You gotta network, Freddy. It's all about who you know. So he did. He attended every networking event he could find, collected a stack of business cards thicker than a porterhouse steak, shook hands, made small talk, and tried to sound impressive.

1:37And what did it get him? A bunch of surface-level conversations that led nowhere. People who liked his energy, but never called him. A reputation as a nice guy, but not an essential guy. And worst of all, he never met the people he actually wanted to do business with. Because the real players, they weren't wasting their time at networking events. So one night, Freddie is at yet another networking event, a luxury real estate mixer at a high-end hotel. And he's talking to a guy named Marty the Deck Antonelli, a local real estate agent who hands out more business cards than a Vegas blackjack dealer.

2:20Freddie's in the middle of his usual small talk routine when he notices something. Across the room, sitting in a quiet corner booth, are two serious-looking guys in tailored suits drinking expensive whiskey. Freddie recognizes one of them. It's Lance Waverly, a private equity guy who moves$100 million deals before breakfast. And suddenly, it hits Freddie like a freight train. The real power players don't network. They gather. They weren't circling the room, swapping business cards, or pretending to be interested in 45-second elevator pitches. They were talking to each other. Because when you're already successful, you don't network.

3:03You curate your circle. And Freddie? Well, he wasn't in it. Yet. Most people in Freddie's position would have done one or two things. Option one, try to force their way into the conversation awkwardly, hovering, waiting for an opening. Option two, do nothing, stay in the safe circle of low-level networkers and hope to get lucky next time. But Freddy, well, he did something smarter. He walked right up to the bartender and asked, what's Waverly drinking? Bartender says, Yamazaki neat. Freddy nods, slides 100 across the bar and says, send around to their table. Tell Waverly from a guy who respects a good drink.

3:49And then Freddie walked away. Didn't hover, didn't try to pitch, didn't make it weird, just planted a seed. Fifteen minutes later, Lance Waverly waves him over. They start talking, not about business or what Freddie does, but about good whiskey, good restaurants, and why Waverly never goes to networking events. Then halfway through the conversation, Waverly says, so what do you do, Freddie? Freddie gives a tight, confident answer. Not a pitch, not a speech, just a line that makes Waverly curious. And by the end of the night, Freddie has a follow-up meeting. A month later, he's handling Waverly's financials.

4:33A year later, he's in Waverly's circle. All because he stopped networking like an amateur and started moving like the wealthy. So let's break down why Freddie's new approach worked. Networking events are filled with people who need business, not people who can give it. The real players, they don't work the room. They own it. Surface level connections don't lead to deep business. A handshake means nothing if it doesn't come with real trust. Wealthy clients don't network. They build relationships. They don't collect business cards. They collect trusted allies. So if you're still networking the old way, running around, handing out cards, hoping to get lucky, you're playing the wrong game.

5:20Stop going to places where everyone is selling. Start positioning yourself where the real players actually are. Because the rich don't network. They just know who matters. If you want to actually connect with high net worth clients, here's what you do. Step number one, stop wasting time at networking events. They're full of people looking for business, not people who have it. Step two, get into their real circles. Charity events, private clubs, invitation only gatherings. That's where money moves. Step three, play the long game. Introduce yourself without selling. Let them come to you. Step four, make every introduction feel effortless.

6:06The best way to connect? Be interesting first. Be valuable second. Sell last. Remember, the people who actually make money, they don't chase connections. They create demand. So the next time you're thinking about going to another networking event, remember Fast Freddy. Don't just shake hands. Don't just collect contacts. Get in the right rooms and play the game differently. This is Mark Satterfield. Thanks for listening to this chapter of the Velvet Rope Playbook.
