In short
The hosts discuss gadget news and usability gripes: Apple Weather’s misleading rain display, Garmin’s new screenless activity tracker (Circa), Jack Dorsey’s Block/Buzz group-chat app, Light Phone 3’s successor (Light Flip), and Samsung’s Unpacked foldables (Watch 9/Ultra 2, Flip 8, Fold 8 and Fold “Ultra”/“big fold” variants).
Guests
No external guests are interviewed. The episode features hosts Marquez, Andrew, and David (plus an ad read by Ryan Reynolds for Mint Mobile).
Key claims
- Apple Weather shows “rain/thunderstorms” icons for the whole day even when rain only occurs briefly (e.g., 1–2 a.m.), making the overview misleading.
- Garmin Circa costs $199/$200 with no subscription for core tracking; some advanced features may require Garmin Connect Plus (~$6/month). Major miss: no standalone GPS (GPS is phone-connected).
- Buzz is “Slack-like” but open-sourced and uses Nostr for verified actions; it’s positioned as reducing dependency on Slack.
- Light Flip is a $299 flip phone with a T9/voice-to-text UI and limited “distraction” apps; lack of email/Slack/ride-share/Venmo is a major drawback.
- Samsung’s new foldables emphasize brighter displays, updated chips, larger batteries, and reduced crease; pricing rises (e.g., Fold Ultra ~$2,100; Flip 8 ~$1,000; Fold storage starts higher).
Notable examples
- Apple Weather: “90% chance of thunderstorms” yet only 1–2 a.m. rain.
- Garmin Circa: ~10-day battery expectation; no notification vibration beyond alarms.
- Light Flip: no touchscreen; T9 typing for street names; shipping delayed until April next year.
- Samsung: “passport-shaped” Fold 8 redesign; anti-reflective coating on an inner display.

It's got suspense, mystery, a slightly flat emotional arc, and a shocking twist where you realize you've been overpaying the entire time. Fortunately, though, Mint's story is better.
0:14David Imel:Every plan,$15 a month, even unlimited. That's it. Happy ending. Zero tears. Give it a try at mintmobile.com slash switch.
0:22Marques Brownlee:Upfront payment of$45 for three months,$90 for six months, or$180 for 12-month plan required. $15 per month equivalent. Taxes and fees extra. Initial plan term only greater than 50 gigabytes may slow when network is busy. See terms. this episode is brought to you by starbucks that is fire whoa that's good this might be the drink of the summer okay i like this one too i'm rocking with it okay try it for yourself starbucks refreshers concentrates are coming home find them in the coffee aisle and make it yours i thought life phone was just running android no that's the whole point is you're supposed to spend the 300 on an android phone but instead you spent it on this so you can't do anything i think
0:55David Imel:it does run Android, but I think there are people who like sideload it, but that's definitely not what they want.
1:01Marques Brownlee:If you want to sideload Android apps, just buy an Android phone. You don't have to do this to yourself.
1:12Yeah.
1:12Marques Brownlee:What is up people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the waveform podcast. We're your hosts. I'm Marquez. I'm Andrew. And I'm David. Big gadget week. Lots of new stuff is coming on. We have thoughts on all of it. We can talk today about Garmin's new Whoop competitor, one of many. Also, Samsung has new folding phones that came out on Unpacked this week, and also a new light phone that we have thoughts on. That Marques totally loves Unconditioned. We'll see. Read the script, Marques. We'll see. And if you didn't see, we are back to our regularly scheduled programming, but our not regularly scheduled programming was the last episode's trivia extravaganza in which Andrew, I don't want to spoil it.
1:51Marques Brownlee:Lost. I don't want to spoil it. Andrew was there. There were lots of changes in points over the course of that episode, and now we are resetting season five, whatever season it is. We're back to zero, zero, and zero. But if you want to see who won and who ran away with the most points, that's our last episode. Let's just say I'm equivalent to the San Antonio Spurs.
2:11David Imel:Damn.
2:12Marques Brownlee:That is a bit of a spoiler.
2:13David Imel:You are.
2:13Marques Brownlee:If you know ball.
2:14David Imel:You are 7 '6", so you are as tall as Wimby. That's what it says on my dating app. Mm-hmm. It also means he has a history and a legacy of cultivating French talent. Bingo! When you're not subscribed, you miss a lot of stuff going on on Tuesdays, so you should probably hit that button. Definitely go watch that.
2:30Marques Brownlee:All right, but first, did they even test this?
2:32David Imel:Okay. I have one. Okay. This one has been plaguing me for a long time, but I only recently realized how much I hate it. Mm-hmm. Nice. Okay. This is exactly what we need. Yeah. So this is the Apple weather app. I'm not sure if this is true on other weather apps. I'll tell you. And many people have been like, why do you use the stock Apple weather app? Why don't you use these other ones? Mostly it's because it's included and free because I'm a normie, I guess. It's like using the stock calendar app. Which would be insane. I do not do that. I'm a Google boy through and through for calendar. Anyway, the worst part about the Apple weather app is that it can be sunny almost all day long.
3:14It will rain for like one hour at one in the morning. and if you are zoomed out on the weather it says 90 chance of thunderstorms all day or just for the day is rain yeah like it says tomorrow 90 chance of thunderstorm and then you actually tap into the day and it's like oh from like 1 a.m to 2 a.m it's raining and then all day
3:38Marques Brownlee:it's sunny yeah that is that should be a setting that you can adjust it's not so i i agree with that is kind of annoying i've gotten so used to seeing the rain logo and then going oh it's going to rain at some point during those 24 hours and then i click in to see when during the 24 hours
3:54David Imel:usually at like one in the morning but yeah it is uh that is a very good point even a 1 p.m shower if it's only for an hour you don't shower before bed well see that's that's where i that's where i
4:06Marques Brownlee:think it should be customizable because i think people want to know if at some point during the day it will rain and then if it is show the especially if it's like during the commute or during lunch or when i'm going to be outside like i want to know if it's going to rain maybe when i'm awake for it instead of a single icon they could put like a sun and a rain icon and just put percentages next to it like what percentage of the day is it sunny what percentage of the day is well that's what you see when you click in when you click in but then you have to click in and this overview like you should just know it says freaking thunderstorms but it was sunny all day okay okay so the so the apple weather app is a terrible layout yeah i suggest almost any other
4:43David Imel:weather like yeah i think most weather apps do that though if like there is rain at some point in a 24 hour day it just shows and that's bad that's just bad but there should be a setting of
4:54Marques Brownlee:like will it rain during my commute or during my waking day or waking day i think like 9 to 8 p.m
5:02David Imel:if there's rain in there you can put rain if there's no rain in that chill yeah that's valid it's just yeah I don't know it just feels it makes this feel practically pointless because unless it shows a sun icon which basically means it's sun all day no matter what wait and what I didn't notice you were physically saying today where 1am has happened already yeah and it still says rain still says thunderstorms yeah that's crazy it's past like We're past that part. At least update when we're past it. Yeah. Dynamic to the point where maybe within a few hours of the future. And then changes. So if you check your weather in the morning and it says sunny, but then when you check again at 1 p.m.
5:45David Imel:if it's raining later, then maybe it can switch to rain. You should just use the Nothing Weather app because it has a widget that shows you the whole day.
5:51Marques Brownlee:Do they have that for the iPhone? This is on iPhone. Oh, interesting. Oh, that's the Not Boring Weather app. Yes, thank you. Sorry. Not boring. I did it. From eight feet away, I was like, I know that widget. Is that paid or is that free? That's a free one. Come on. There's a paid tier, though. There's a paid tier. Okay. I may start exploring weather apps the way you guys explore productivity apps. I would recommend it.
6:12David Imel:This is Marques' other job. Yeah, sure. Yeah, I got you.
6:16Marques Brownlee:I think what we're discovering is why weather apps are the peak of data organization and display. Yeah. There is so much that people want to know or don't want to know or want preferences on showing in the weather display, and that's why weather apps are crazy. Yeah. So what do you recommend for the iPhone for a weather app? So my personal favorite is Carrot still, Carrot Weather. Okay. It's essentially ripped a layout from Dark Sky, which we've heard about, talked about Dark Sky many times. Yeah. So it has the same layout as Dark Sky and then it has a really good radar implementation. So if you ever want to see the overhead of like where the storms are or where they're tracking during the day, that's really useful.
6:55Marques Brownlee:And then like, so when you pull up, this is, we're going way too into that.
6:58David Imel:I'll give you my layman's term of what the ideal situation is. You have three weather apps and you either use one until it's wrong and then switch to another one until that's wrong. Or just look at all three of them until you find the thing you want to believe happens that day. Agree with that one. And then later when it rains, be like, yeah, really didn't think it was going to rain today. And then just be sad about it. I should just have a full page of weather app widgets. And then I can just look and they all say different. They all say different things. And I look at five and I take an average.
7:25So this is Dark Sky's copy layout.
7:29Marques Brownlee:See how that's a light blue? That's like a light percentage chance. So you kind of, at a glance, you know, oh, at 4 p.m. it might storm. What about sun? Then these will not be gray. So this is like cloudy, gray all day. But if it's a sunny day like this, see how it's clear up there? That's clear. Why would it be yellow? So it's just a good glanceable. You should just do what I do and walk in the morning and ask Marquez.
7:55David Imel:just call him your weather app just calls Marquez this is actually what Marquez GPT would be helpful for Marquez you're in my phone as weather app
8:07Marques Brownlee:that's why every day he texts he just texts me a question mark every morning at 8am and I just answer that's just how it works anyway that's mine I just need them to fix it's just so annoying it's been pissing me off alright we've been talking about a lot about Fitbit stuff. We've been talking a lot about Whoop stuff. Andrew, certified Whoop hater. I stopped using my Whoop and I'm using the Fitbit Air again. So we represent the entire spectrum here. Yeah, that's true. And now, we finally got the product we've been thinking was probably going to happen eventually and it happened eventually. This is the Garmin screenless activity tracker.
8:47Andrew's very excited about this because Andrew has used Garmin for years. So do you want to talk about this? Yeah, we'll talk about it.
8:52David Imel:We're looking forward to it. I was looking forward to seeing what it was. Okay. So let's start with what it is. The Garmin Circa. C-I-R-Q-A. Why did they do that? Garmin, I guess. Just stop with the Qs. Let LG handle that. Garmin, I guess, kind of has done some work. The Garmin Phoenix was F-E-N-I-X. That's fine. That's fine. It is, but not what you would normally assume Phoenix. M-A-R-Q. Yeah, they've all had a little... Okay, anyways. Yeah. it's this is one of those things where I saw the picture and the colors of the bands looked great yeah the materials looked really solid it has a button on the side which I was like okay I like potential customizable button and then the more I read about it the more buttons cool sad I got
9:41Marques Brownlee:yeah so on the surface it's roughly the same size and shape as you're expecting it's kind of similar to the whoop maybe a little bit thinner it's narrower than the Fitbit but you know it's a screenless fitness tracker it's wider than the
9:55David Imel:sorry wider than the Fitbit probably about as wide as Whoop potentially a little shorter in terms of height off of your wrist than the Whoop Desfit had like a little unboxing that showed both of them Desfit and DC Rainmaker are probably going to have 400 videos on this and I will watch all of them because they are my go to Whoop activity tracker whatever they compare all of them they compare them all so much the thing that's also
10:22Marques Brownlee:great about this one is it's no subscription needed it's 200 yes for just buying it outright
10:28David Imel:and using it forever that's pretty nice no yeah always a good thing there are i believe it's six dollars a month for garmin uh what's it called garmin connect plus i think it is um and there are some features in there a lot of them are workouts and workout plans and coaching and stuff there is one thing that i found out later which is live heart rate zones and some there's some live graphs but most importantly live heart rate zones on your phone live app that i think is connect plus only which is that's so easy it's on all of your watches already yeah that doesn't require the subscription for that and plays it on the watch back off garmin put that on the free mode let the ai coaching and whatever be the thing you pay extra for i think that's totally fair um but yeah 200 199 no subscription fee i found the bands to be kind of expensive they're 49 for an extra band or 60 for the armband fitbit has really reasonable accessory prices um they're like 35 bucks for some of them they're definitely they're velcro a little bit of stretch i think the colors look really good there's like black a tan kind of a brownish maroony color and then a blue um definitely chunkier i was confused by 10 day battery life that seems short in my eyes considering i have the 48 millimeter amoled uh phoenix 8 pro or whatever it is and that can get like 14 days of battery life with that huge amoled screen with rays to wake on and this only gets 10 obviously it's bigger but this is doing so much less it doesn't have a screen i feel like so my thought was cool it's garmin they love gps maybe this is the first screenless activity tracker with gps connection awesome which would have been so garmin and it's not yeah it's gps connect only which is through your phone right which i think is such a big miss i i hate to say this but i almost feel like that's dead on arrival for this yeah i would think the garmin one yes people are
12:34Marques Brownlee:going to be looking to the Garmin one for the things that they've looked to Garmin for in the past, which is a lot of outdoor workouts, which like biking and hiking and running, that's like a heavy GPS activity. If I want to take this out and not bring my phone with me, I would like it to have GPS. GPS is also a very big power draw. And I wonder if this is just a focus on like, we have to make it so thin and light and small that it's got a tiny battery and GPS would draw too much battery. But it's like not, it's, it's kind of big. It's like, it is kind of chunky. Yeah. But it's the same, I mean, think about like the Whoop and the Fitbit Air that also don't have GPS.
13:06Marques Brownlee:Yeah, but Whoop's a scam, so. I'm just saying form factor wise, if you add GPS to that small thing, it's cruising through battery. Doesn't the watch have like standalone GPS? Yeah, like so many of their watches. Yeah, but the watch has a much larger physical, I know it's like a small thing on your wrist still, but milliamp hour wise, it's a much bigger battery because you're used to having a metal heavier thing on your wrist.

13:25David Imel:But that's still why I thought that this new one would have GPS because without GPS, this thing should have like a 30-day battery life. So that would be nice. Yeah, that's 10. I was like, oh, so it has to have GPS. The 10 made you think it might have GPS because even though the other ones are bigger, they have longer battery lives, GPS, and they're powering a screen, which makes it feel like one of those things should have stayed there. Right.
13:47Marques Brownlee:How long does your Fitbit actually last on battery? Like 12 to 14 days. Really? My whoop lasts like 10 days. My Fitbit lasts like maybe a week. What? Like seven days, yeah. Yeah. No, it'll be like 10 % by like day six. Mine lasts at least 10 days. And when you're tracking workouts, it goes faster because of all the higher sampling. So like if I start a weekend with two practices at 25 % battery, it's nearly dead by the end in two days. Whoa. The Fitbit? Yeah. No, the Whoop. Oh, the Whoop. Yeah. And the Fitbit too. I was getting like seven to eight days of battery. So when I saw 10 days, I was like, yeah, that's probably about right.
14:20Marques Brownlee:But the others will rate it for like 14. So this seems like it's maybe not going to make it to seven for me. Yeah. Which is tough.
14:26David Imel:We'll have to see. So it does kind of the typical stats you can track, activity tracking, heart rate, sleep, HRV, calories. It has body battery slash training readiness. That's something Garmin's had for a long time. There's a sleep coach included in the free metrics and all general sleep tracking. This is something. Sleep coach is funny. I think it's. Well, I think it's more like. Just how to sleep better. I think it's more along the lines of like you had a really training fulfilled day and maybe didn't get as much sleep. you should try and get an extra hour. That's all it is. It's saying like, bro, take a nap.
15:01David Imel:Or bro, like chill out today. Go to sleep a little earlier. There is vibrations for alarms. There's no altimeters for floors climbs. Is there vibration for notifications? No. Ah, sorry. Nope.
15:13Marques Brownlee:Just the alarm.
15:15David Imel:There's gotta be someone who can figure out the like if this, then that. And just make, every time I get a text notification in, it just like quickly sets an alarm for 30 seconds later. Yeah, I know someone who can do that. It's my friend Claude. He sounds expensive. Yeah, well. And potentially really dangerous. What else was I going to say? The button on the side can help you with quick launching different activities. It does have auto tracking activities and most of the stuff you do through the same Garmin Connect app that you're used to. But the button can then be helpful. I haven't seen exactly how it's used, but for launching some of those activities that maybe you don't think it's going to pick up automatically.
15:57David Imel:I feel like the usefulness of that is limited because I need my phone on me anyway. What do you mean? Like if I'm going to go on a run and I quick start a run, it doesn't track GPS. So I need my phone. I'm going to have my phone on me anyway. I'll just take out my phone and start a run. I'm sure with how many different activities there, I'm sure there's some that that would be beneficial. I remember like when we used to play or when I used to play ultimate wearing my whoop, I would be like we would play like an indoor league. and I would go out and start running and be like, oh, I didn't start it on my phone.
16:30David Imel:But my phone would be in my bag where I like changed everything, not on the sidelines. So then I could just press it and be like, it's starting an activity. I'll go in and call it ultimate later.
16:39Marques Brownlee:Yeah, it is nice to have a quick start button. That's a nice feature. For sure.
16:42David Imel:Or if climbing, you leave your phone in your bag all the time, stuff like that. I could see that being beneficial. I mean, and hopefully there's some other things you can do with a button. I think a button. I was just gonna say having one button unlocks so much. That's like one of the main reasons why I like Garmin when exercising in general is because touchscreens are so annoying when you're sweaty and it's hot out and you're like a couple miles into a run. Like just pressing a button is so much easier. Yeah. Their absolute cheapest watches are about$250. They do have a like little screened smart band, the Vivo Smart 5.
17:14Yeah, like an old Fitbit that's$150. So I guess that's kind of the best.
17:20David Imel:Yeah, I was trying to figure out who I think this is best for. Because in so many ways, it's cheaper than Whoop because Whoop is infinite. $200, so twice the price of Fitbit Air. It's also twice the thickness of Fitbit Air, which I really think is why the Fitbit Air is so good. Because of how chill it is. It just is so minimal. It feels ideal. And as much as I like, it looks like the materials are good. It looks like the colors are good. It all looks nice. but then seeing it on people's wrists and then seeing the fitbit air is like yeah when you maybe want to wear another watch having a much smaller band on your other the smaller seems better you know what this is for this is for the people that like have an f-150 and then they buy a second car that's like a corolla well that is kind of what i was i was gonna say this is for people who do maybe really like triathlons or marathons or things where the watch telling them the information so someone who already has a Garmin watch but doesn't want to wear it all of the time so then all of their information is in the same app and coexist with each other but they don't want to wear the giant 50mm AMOLED watch that just is like pure statistics on it all the time because it doesn't look nice at work but they still want a typical screenless activity whoop user I can't even take a shower without tracking my heart rate in the middle of it so like being able to constantly track Dude, literally every time I'd take my whoop off in the shower, I'd be like, why are you taking it off?
18:50You can shower with this on. You can just put the battery on. It's waterproof. It's okay. It's like never take your whoop off. Always be tracking.
18:57David Imel:I mean, I think that's anyone wearing these kinds of things. That's probably something they like to do. It also is the same proprietary. Yeah, I guess if it's cloth, yeah, take it off in the shower. It's cloth. You don't want it to be wet all day. I don't get that. To be fair, though, my Fitbit Air has gotten real dirty. It's pretty gross. So maybe I should shower with it on. I mean, one time. You have to do it every time. It's this stupid little proprietary charger that Garmin uses, which I just really dislike. And I don't know why they haven't changed that yet. Okay, wait. That is my one thing that made me realize.
19:34David Imel:Not that I like it. I agree with you. It is stupid. The proprietary charger in general is annoying. But this is what made me think that it is a secondary device. Because if you already have a Garmin watch, you already have the charger. like if it shipped with like USB whatever it would be more annoying or like a proprietary magnetic charger it would be like oh now I have two chargers for my two Garmin things like it's like the second option so it has the same charger fine whatever yeah I don't know I wanted to be really excited by this and then the more I read about it the less excited I was about it they did send me an email asking if I wanted a sample I said yes we'll see if they send that before this episode comes out and then take it back but I will try it If anything, being critical should make them want to send you one more if they actually believe in their product.
20:18David Imel:The gray and the brown colors look really nice. Why is the beige one called French gray? What makes it French? You should know. You're the Spurs. Yeah, true. I don't know. It's not even. It's like beige. French gray is a color. It does feel beige. That's the thing I've been calling brown. Shouldn't it be white? Okay. No, I think it's an actual capital C. color gray is color yeah if you're gonna paint a room or something and gray is so much not gray a lot of the times this feels really stupid but we wanted to paint our bedroom gray and we got six different paint samples put them up we're like that looks really nice painted the whole room and claire and i walk in we're like that's light blue that is that like more warm any undertone that hits with a gray the bigger the more it gets you're like oh my god that's not gray anymore that's
21:09Marques Brownlee:true i paid in my room shasta blue and i regret it shas we've been making a lot of paint decisions recently for a certain upcoming studio and you really gotta be careful no you know what's funny i was hanging out with brandon and alex was sending him photos of paint samples and brandon was like this is useless auto white balance has made this it's like when you talk about airpods it's like i don't know what color those are or the other day you're just like it's getting really
21:37David Imel:dark outside and like posted a picture to slack and it just looked like a normal day because
21:42Marques Brownlee:the aq i was crazy and it looked like mars outside and i took a picture to see how red the air was and it's the auto white balance is like so it's sunny right so it's yeah i guess
21:51David Imel:when we saw the eclipse there's a video of it and it's all of us freaking out and it looks like
21:56Marques Brownlee:almost nothing happens yeah you gotta lock that off manual settings okay so yeah um we'll see
22:04David Imel:what happens with it. All right. We don't need to talk about this for that long. Please read. Yes, we do. Okay. Who wants to read the title I put for this? I'll read the script. Okay. This is the craziest phone with a hinge that's been announced. Oh, no. You're missing. You missed a part.
22:19Marques Brownlee:Before we even get to that, there's a little blurb in the script. I'll read it. I missed the blurb. It says, some decentralized group chat thing that David and Adam are going to be enamored with that will never actually exist because no one will use it and it's made by the same people. It already exists. What are you talking about? It's already out. Here we go. I'm running it on my computer right now. I wish I was, but they've never invited me. I can't figure out how to invite you. How many people are you talking to? My three agents. But look, they're cute. They are kind of cute. Okay, what is it?
22:45Look at them. It's a group chat. What is this? Look at the little agent. Okay, explain it and then we'll talk about that. Okay, yeah, I didn't explain it. Okay, so Jack Dorsey's Block Company, which is now sort of a mega company, whatever, it announced this new app called Buzz. Google Buzz. It is available now, so I guess that's why they took it. Buzz is just Slack. Like, it looks almost identical to Slack. It is so ridiculously similar to Slack. And when he tweeted it out, he said that they made it because they wanted to reduce dependency on Slack. What makes it interesting is that it's open sourced.
23:23It does not completely run on his open protocol, which is Noster. but every action that you take within it is like is on the noster chain so everything's like verified over noster it's like a peer-to-peer thing um when you add people to it it's basically like a locally run slack everything is like stored both locally and put on the noster chain and then for some reason they have like a little mini github inside of it too so you can like vibe code with your friends, which is interesting.
24:00David Imel:It's very much like the BitChat one that he released like a year or two ago that David and I were using on a plane and you guys were making fun of us. Yeah. No, we weren't making fun of you. We were pretending we were other people. Oh, yeah. Yeah. It's like a mesh Bluetooth network where you can message people locally. But it looks like that, but with Slack. It looks exactly like Slack, right? And then there's a little agents tab and there's three different agents that I guess you can set up to do different things. Yeah. And you can connect. they're like you can connect whatever agent you whatever model you want to it so it can be a local model it can be like a clod model it could be an open ai model i don't know i like way more useful for engineering teams i would assume yeah for sure fun for us to play around i like the idea of like reducing dependent on a giant mega corporation and running something locally and i am also all for like open source protocols and yeah this reminded me a lot of so in order for us to be in the same community we had to like there's a private key and a public key situation you have to do so i had to send david my public key so he can add me which he can't figure out i can't figure out how to add besides that it just reminded me of this old app called keybase that was kind of similar to this it was just using pgp to kind of like prove ownership of certain domains so you can verify yourself over like every social media app which was cool so it was a social media like platform Basically, I would go to your profile and then you would link your Twitter or your website or your YouTube channel.
25:27David Imel:And then because it was verified in that way, if I saw someone tweeting and I clicked it and it wasn't you, I would know because like it wasn't verified on who I know to be Marquez Brownlee or Andrew Manganielli, you know. So this is what kind of it reminded me of just like easily easy ways to verify people. But then that company was bought by Zoom and no one trusted anymore. so yeah i mean it it crashed and burned but still pretty cool literally cannot figure out how to add you so we'll figure it out later i guess i've been trying people to chat to on a chat i mean i got my agents bro i got three agents here fizz honey and bumble is what their names are they're a little claymation guys yeah they are pretty cute i gotta i will for i don't have a use for this but i will say the website is very pretty yeah and it makes me what do you mean you don't have a use for this We don't have to pay for Slack anymore.
26:18Well, we do have to use Slack. No, we don't. You think we could use this instead of Slack? 100%. It's the same thing. Really? It's exactly like this. You can't even get Adam? Is there a phone? Yeah, there's a... Well, I don't know. That's a great question. Is it on the light phone? Can I video call it? Is there a hotness? Will it compress audio files I send through? Is there a time bot?
26:41Marques Brownlee:There's a new light phone, everyone. Look, the agent can code a time bot. Okay. David literally cannot stop defending the agents because they're little claymation figures
26:51David Imel:that was a Dota joke what? because isn't that stands for defense of the agents? ancients you thought Dota was defense of the agents? this whole time I actually did what? guys I'll see you later let's move on there's a new light phone you guys might have remembered the light phone 3 very difficult to use little phone but you know it doesn't really have any of your apps it's got like a podcast app but you have to upload the files yourself it's got a music app you have to have all the mp3s and upload them to the cloud it's very much like an old school smartphone that's barely a smartphone that's 900 it was a lot of money yeah was it really 900 so i thought it was it launched at like 699 then claimed it was going to go to 800 but when i was on the website this morning i only saw it at 899 no way it's 300 No, no, sorry.
27:44David Imel:We're talking about the old one.
27:46Marques Brownlee:Oh, the original Light Phone.
27:48David Imel:Oh, the 3. Okay, iPhone 3. Yeah, sorry. You were saying you remember the Light Phone, so I thought we were talking about... Okay, I'm sorry. Okay. I remember... Okay, this is what's crazy. The Light Phone is a very old product, and even the Light Phone... Oh, the first one, yes. Even the Light Phone 2 is a very old product. Because I remember Adam and I, when we were at Android Authority, kept being like, can we review this? And it was already a few years old, and they were like, there's no interest in this. um anyway last year they released that or maybe it was early this year i don't remember the light phone 3 900 insane pricing um it's cool it's interesting but it's 900 and it's hard to use now marquez is about to explode yeah go on now they have the light flip and effectively what the light flip is is they kind of it seems like they kind of jacked the screen out of the light phone 2 maybe or maybe it's like a different screen but it's a flip phone looks adorable kind of looks like it was made by uh ikea or teenage engineering or both like if ikea made a flip phone toy for kids yeah yeah basically yeah it comes in these really fun colors that's got these like raised buttons on the inside it's a legit flip phone with the light phone ui um and it's 300 bucks which i don't think is as bad like i don't know do you want me to run specs i saw your tweet i was like yeah it's 300 bucks your guys tweets came up like next to each other on mine and it was david's being like this is so cute and cool and marquez is like i hate this this makes no sense i'll run through specs really fast okay okay how cute it is 299 2.8 inch 480p OLED display.
29:33David Imel:Yes. I don't see anything about touch support, so I'm going to assume this is not a touchscreen display. I doubt it's a touchscreen. The buttons are really big and circular, and they match the colors. It is a flip phone, but it is a thick flip phone. Look how ridiculously cute this is. It is really adorable. Are you freaking kidding me? You can either use T9 or voice-to-text audio. I'm so interested in how many people remember how to use T9, because I don't think a lot of people do. It's slow. Well, it's faster than regular typing on it. But yeah, I see that being a huge issue for like very specific proper nouns, like cities and street names.
30:11David Imel:Like not to doxy Marquez, but imagine trying to type your street name. Yeah, it would take me 20 minutes on the phone. It would take you so, because T9 is a predictive word. And then voice, you can say it and maybe it can use context clues, but like I've had voice to text screw up much easier. It's almost like there's a flawed product. the available tools or apps you want to call it um alarm calculator calendar directory directions hotspot music notes voice memo podcast weather authenticator timer but their weather app is more accurate than how are you going to do t9 authenticate sorry i keep going well authenticator just needs to show so it just needs to be the thing that can show you the authenticator codes right yeah you gotta log in though which dude you do have to log it's so beautiful well could you QR code scan to log in on an authenticator app?
31:00David Imel:Hopefully. I thought so. If you have both phones, you can unlock it with the other one or you can decrypt it with a password. I had an issue recently where I tried to use an Apple phone and log into my authenticator app and it wouldn't let me do it because it was saying that the phone itself wasn't secure enough to do it. So I wonder if this will have that issue. I don't know. Doubt it. Still no email. This is I'm going to do my really quick rant before I let you two go at it, but stop calling email app a distraction. I'm not like going through my email app. Doomscrolling. Doomscrolling my email through like spam.
31:34David Imel:I don't know, dude. People need, work isn't a distraction. Work is work. Work is how I make money to buy this phone. You know what Tim told me the other day? He said he took Instagram off his phone for the month and he's been doomscrolling LinkedIn. Oh. I was like. For a while it was Facebook Marketplace for me, but that's a really fun doomscroll. LinkedIn is so much worse. That is worse. But like, yo, I need email. Like maybe you could argue Slack and stuff. I think that's all still stuff most people need for work. But like, I just need my email for so many different things. Let me have my email.
32:07David Imel:Anyways, colors are black, navy, red, pink, yellow, gray. And yeah, all that. Who wants to go first, Marcus or David?
32:15Marques Brownlee:You should never get one. You should just never get one. I don't think that this is that overpriced. I don't think it's crazy over price. This is the Corolla to your F-150. Okay. This is the scooter. Okay. All right. This is a, so like you said, Andrew, it's not a touchscreen. It's a T9 like number layout keyboard on a flip phone, which is fine for a flip phone, but it's also supposed to be like kind of a decently functional thing. You can see you can do podcasts and calendar and directions, and you're supposed to type into these things with the T9 keyboard all the time with predictive text. That sounds terrible.
32:52David Imel:Voice to text.
32:53Marques Brownlee:Or maybe voice to text. It has a camera on the back. That's something some flip phones have. And maybe you could take a couple pictures. I just don't understand why you would spend$300 for this when you can spend$100 on a flip phone that does the exact same thing. Not the exact same thing. Or you could spend$300 on a smartphone that lasts four or five days because you're not doing anything on it. Why are you spending$300 on this? Because it looks really nice, I guess. They're essentially preying on people who want a beautiful object and who don't actually do much of anything on their phone, which is fine.
33:32Marques Brownlee:It's just you don't have to spend$300. The Kyocera E4830 Duro XC Epic AT &T Unlocked Consumer Cellular T-Mobile Flip Phone 16GB Rugged is$200 at Best Buy. and I would pay an extra$100 for a thing that looks like a teenage engineering product with an amazing dumb UI that is like hard to use but just beautiful. It is just beautiful. There was a$99 one there on the page before.
34:00David Imel:Yeah, it went around.
34:00Marques Brownlee:You can get a Moto G Power for a$300. Yeah, it is and it does way more than this. Yeah, but that's not what people buy these for. I know, but then you put a launcher on it and it does whatever you want. Yeah, but it doesn't look like this. Yeah, well, I guess that's the only reason you can justify it is because nothing else looks like this. Yeah. Which is fine. Yeah, and I will say, like, I didn't get to use the iPhone 3. Why don't we just make it$2 ,000? Well, iPhone 3 is$900 on his website right now. That's crazy. That's also absurd. That's absurd. But that's three times as much as$300. But nothing else looks like that.
34:41Yeah. except the minimal phone too the minimal funding which was yeah recently as well
34:48David Imel:oh was it i this is one of those things where like i actually like i like what it looks like i personally don't think it's that crazy overpriced especially because it's a smaller company but i'm just so mad at the things that they consider distractions that i think some most people know need for everyday life i think an email is one of those things when you don't include those things you're guaranteeing that this is a secondary phone to you and that you still for work or important things need to bring a phone with you which then the distraction is just in your backpack and yeah when i'm not hankering for a doom scroll i'm just
35:23Marques Brownlee:gonna go in my backpack not having a touch screen makes things really tough for this phone like to
35:27David Imel:use which i think you could put more apps on it that are quote distractions because it will just be so hard to use you can have it for the needed communications you need but you won't be spending a whole lot of time on email again i just don't get that i'm stuck up on that for sure like making
35:47Marques Brownlee:a phone call makes perfect sense texting you can do t9 texting i want to pull up a song and play it in a music player that's i mean you can do that if you own the mp3s yeah yeah yeah not gonna be searching through podcasts very often. But yeah.
36:02David Imel:You can't just download Spotify on this.
36:04Marques Brownlee:Nope. Isn't it Android? I thought Light Phone was just running Android. No, that's the whole point is you're supposed to just spend the$300 on an Android phone, but instead you spent it on this so you can't do anything. I mean, I think it does run Android, but it's just like -
36:15David Imel:I think there are people who like sideload it, but that's definitely not what they want.
36:19Marques Brownlee:If you want to sideload Android apps, just buy an Android phone. You don't have to do this to yourself. We recently launched a developer program program for community built and open source tools.
36:31David Imel:Oh, I'm putting Instagram on it. There's currently not a music stream platform like Spotify or a way to call message with platforms like Signal or WhatsApp. There is not a rideshare tool available. These tools may be possible in future software updates. Oh, you love future software updates. I'm not even going to say it. You know what I'm going to say, so I'm not even going to say it. Yeah. I will say it is funny that, and this happens all the time. This happened with ARM chips. This happens with everything. Eventually, we build too much functionality into things, and we go, we don't need all that functionality.
37:02Let's strip it all away. And then eventually, we're like, this needs more functionality. And then they just build it out again. So that's kind of what's happening here. A book's palma with a color screen. The main annoying things, so I didn't get to review the Light Phone 3, but my friend Michael Fisher did. And when I was hanging out with him a lot, it was really annoying. Yeah. Because he couldn't, like, call an Uber. He couldn't pay me on Venmo conveniently. we um so eventually he he did enjoy his time with it because he was reading books more and stuff but eventually it got a little bit too annoying and he just was like this is just a little too annoying so if they could put maybe if they could put rideshare and venmo on here could i yeah the
37:46David Imel:light the minimalist community is gonna hate me for saying this but could you compare these to like a crash diet where it's not sustainable so you buy one and then you're like i can do it and And then you're just cursed through it. You're totally crashing, crashing. And then you go, I can't do this anymore. And then you just absolutely binge doom scrolling and your phone and distractions after that. That's so true. I must have a very different view on the use of this phone. I'm ready, let's go. I want to hear it. Outside of the$299 price tag, you could pay, what is it, $39 a month,$49 a month to have it be on a plan with one gigabyte of data and unlimited call and text, whatever.
38:28David Imel:I think this is your personal phone. And then you make your smartphone your work phone. So like you get home and you put one phone with Slack and email and everything. You put that in your backpack for the next day. You walk around with this phone. On the weekends, you just leave your phone at home. It's like a laptop. You just leave it at home because you're not doing any work. And then you have a$39 phone that you're just walking around with in case someone needs to contact you. We've talked about this with like clicks and stuff like that, but it just feels... Also, I love how it's like, we can be distracted at work.
38:59David Imel:That's cool. Well, not being distracted. It's what you're going to do. Boss's time. Instagram it up. Well, I actually do need to post to social for work. But more so just the tools themselves are not available on this phone. Like Slack. Exactly.
39:13Marques Brownlee:You don't get Slack on this phone. So you can't do it for work. I think that's nice if you have that nice delineation where the only thing you need your personal phone for is for people to contact you. And then the rest of the stuff you only need at work. but the once in a while you need to Venmo someone or the once in a while you need to Uber somewhere or you need to do some quick Apple pay or like pay for something on your, like once in a while, those annoyances are gonna add up, especially with a phone like this where you can't use a QWERTY keyboard. And I feel like after a while, I'm just gonna get annoyed.
39:40Marques Brownlee:And I think most people who use this are reviewers giving it a shot and then being like, yeah, it's not for me. I don't know, man. There are dozens.
39:48David Imel:Do Lars have one?
39:49Marques Brownlee:Does he still have it? I don't know if he's still using it. He's just using a Nokia. he was using a dumb phone. I would say using Nokia you'd spend a tenth of the money. It's probably a better deal. Does the Moto G Power have the little flip phone charm ring thing that you can put charms on your phone? No it does not. Just saying.
40:07David Imel:I don't know that charm feels pretty destructive. There's a long list of things
40:11Marques Brownlee:I'm going to doom scroll my charms. Also I do have to say that it doesn't ship until April of next year. which is a really long time. I feel like they always do that though. They always announce it and it's like shipping way later.
40:25David Imel:Technically you're still reserving the Light Phone 3. Yeah. Part of me makes, part of me thinks that these are all renders and they don't actually have like units. By the way, the Moto G Power
40:34Marques Brownlee:is like a solidly good looking phone. Let me see. Why don't you buy one? I would just, I have one. I have one. Yeah, we do have one. I do have one. Yeah, it's not bad looking. It's not bad looking. There's a reason that Motorola has been getting more popular in the United States. Well, I, for one, want the IKEA phone.
40:55David Imel:Wait, Minimal Phone 2? If you make something look like Teenage Engineering made it, you will make it desirable. Yeah, that's all you need to do. I won't rant about it because I do love this series of phones too much, but Minimal Phone 2 does solve... They just have a silhouette, though. All you can see is that it has a keyboard. It doesn't matter. They're bringing it back. It doesn't matter. Minimal Phone 1 was so much fun to use for that month. Wasn't that the... Were you like absolutely break down by the end of the video? No, no, no. I was doing great. I think I was a little... You looked like you were in a therapy session by the end of it.
41:29David Imel:That is true. The only reason that that phone was unsustainable was because of the lock screen glitch where it would constantly die because it kept trying to unlock in my pocket. But assuming they fixed that in version 2, I would easily switch back. We'll see. Especially if it has RCS support. That'd be sweet. Anyway, you know what doesn't have RCS support? The Minimal Phone 3. The Slip Phone. Because it doesn't exist. We added RCS to trivia. Oh, we did? Yeah. Stick or react to this. Mm-hmm. I could do that. With the sloth. Trivia time. Trivia time. Zero, zero, zero. Zero, zero, zero. Guys, if you haven't watched Trivia Extravaganza, I won't spoil it.
42:08David Imel:However, despite like 800 points being given out over the course of that episode, the final score was down to a mere eight point difference. It was a serious nail biter. But today, resetting season six, zero, zero, zero. First question. After the break, we're going to talk about the new Samsung foldables. So this is a foldable. It's not actually a foldable. It's not a foldables question. But everyone is acting like they invented the passport style foldable these days. However. I did. which handset manufacturer, which phone company committed to the form factor so hard they actually named a phone the Passport in 2014.
42:52David Imel:Light phone. It was discontinued in 2016. Deuter Rams. Excuse me. It wasn't discontinued. They ended production in 2016. 2014? 2014 to 2016. It was in production. It was called the Passport. Who made it? Was it actually foldable? It was not. It was 2014. I feel like I reviewed this. Yeah. Yeah. Oh. I just don't remember. When I just assume I know right off the bat, I'm like, both of them are known. Yeah. I thought it was older. We'll see. 2014. Okay. The blank passport.
43:21Marques Brownlee:Honda. Anyway, the real answer will be at the end. After the break, we'll be right back.

44:32David Imel:This episode is brought to you by Facebook. So you were scrolling on Marketplace, and there it was. the bike you'd been searching for. You sent a message and it turned out the seller was super chatty,
44:45Marques Brownlee:kind of funny, and an avid cyclist. The next thing you know, you're in a cycling crew.
44:50David Imel:Well, a community cycling group. The thing about Facebook, you might find more than what you're looking for. From a browse to a bike ride, this summer, find more on Facebook.
45:02Marques Brownlee:All right, welcome back. We got to talk about Samsung Unpacked. That was this week. It's actually, it's Wednesday. They were recording it literally right after watching that hour and a half of something. Cringe. Yeah, a lot of vertical AI-generated ads in that keynote for some reason. Guinea pig. Kind of strange. But they did unveil two watches, three phones, and some glasses, so we can talk about all of that. Like I said, a lot of gadgets. Let's start real quick with the, I think, the simplest stuff. Yeah. There's two new watches. Okay. There's a Galaxy Watch 9 and a Galaxy Watch Ultra 2. They get updated specs.
45:42Marques Brownlee:There's a 5 ,000-lit display on the Ultra 2. They're generally better overall, and they're also still, I think, 350 or 360. 379 and 699. So that's great. There's also a new Flip. The new Flip 8 is slightly thinner. It's got a slightly brighter screen, a little bit more functionality on the cover screen, and it is still$1 ,000.
46:04David Imel:As the new titanium whatever. Yeah, so the titanium plus.
46:09Marques Brownlee:They did up the price by$100. Yeah, oh, it's$1 ,100, right? Yeah.
46:12David Imel:It also is back to a Snapdragon chip after last year being Exynos only. Oh, forgot about that.
46:17Marques Brownlee:Yeah, that's the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. So that's good. And then we got two new big folds. And what they did was kind of interesting. They have a new Fold 8, as you're picturing it, a candy bar style. Then they just added the word Ultra to the end of the name and updated the specs and the titanium flex hinge and everything. And this is the new big fold is what I'm calling it. Snapdragon Elite Gen 5, 5 ,000 mAh battery, slightly less hinge or slightly less crease. Not zero crease, but slightly less crease. There's an anti-reflective coating on the inside screen.
46:53David Imel:Oh, wait, no, I'm sorry. That's the new one?
46:54Marques Brownlee:Yeah, it's$2 ,100. And it is starting at 250 gigs, so it's 100 bucks more than last year. and then they introduced a new Fold 8 that is underneath that. So it is taking the name of the previous phone, but it is now this short, wide, passport-shaped squat one. I'm holding it right here for video users so you can see what I'm talking about. This is the Fold 8. Okay, this one is interesting to actually talk about. I really like this one, and I was curious to see if other people who got their hands on it liked it as much as I do as well. There's a couple reasons why I really like it. Adam is jumping at the bit.
47:32Marques Brownlee:Adam really likes it. Adam really wants to use it. I like it a lot. So here's a couple of interesting things about this. One, it is smaller, of course, right? It is a small, what is it? What did you say? Five and a half inch outside? It's five and a half inch on the outside, yeah. And it's a like 16 by 11 or 16 by 10 aspect ratio on the outside. So it's this little, not quite square, but it's kind of squarish display, right? Rectangle. then when you open it it becomes a 7.6 inch 4 by 3 display 4 by 3 is nice that's a nice aspect ratio for reading when it's vertical uh for you know media is okay on it but for looking at your pictures and stuff it's nice medium format camera sensors are 4 by 3 a lot of photos you take a 4 by 3 and then it's really thin and light this is the other thing that i found interesting about it It's 201 grams.
48:21Marques Brownlee:That's only like eight more grams than a regular S26 Plus. So it feels like the same weight as a regular slab phone, but it is a totally different shape. I guarantee you Adam's on the pre-order page right now. He's opened it and closed it like four times this morning. On the checkout cart. I have like six tabs open. I'm trying. It's got dual cameras on the back. So only two. It's a 50 megapixel primary instead of the 200 and a 50 megapixel ultra wide. and it's a 4800 milliampire battery. So it's just, it's a little bit less phone than the Ultra. Yeah. The Ultra didn't like get any new functionality to deserve the Ultra name.
48:58Marques Brownlee:What do you mean, it got the Ultra camera? It had that camera last year. I know. So it's just like, whatever, they just decided to add the name Ultra and it's more of a positioning thing to like slot this in underneath. Yeah. We all think Apple is also gonna make a passport shaped fold later this year. So maybe that was a little clever positioning on their part. But I really like this size.
49:18David Imel:Before we get into that, can we talk about how stupid the ultra naming? Like, normally when we get a pro or ultra or something, it's because we get something. Yeah. This is just naming it so it can slide something underneath it. Yeah. That sucks. Yep. Yeah. That's really annoying. They should have just called it like the Fold Plus.
49:37Marques Brownlee:I think the Fold W wide or like. Yeah. Remember when the Edge came out? This like super thin phone? that made sense because it was just like a and you add that to the end of the name to signify that it's a certain type of phone this could be the fold wide or the fold edge or something and they are kind of putting themselves in a corner because if you remember correctly google originally made a short wide foldable as their first foldable as well and then they eventually just gave in to the rest of the market and they made a tall one again and if apple maybe starts with the passport style but then decides later that they want to go to the tall one then samsung's kind of stuck with the ultra and the normal yeah which is fine they're they're a company that seems perfectly content to make a thousand different phones that's true um but yeah for now this is the one that takes the mantle of just this is the fold 8 by name yeah now it's 1900 that's the biggest beef that i have with it personally and starts at 256 gigs of storage that is also true yeah uh but everything else about holding it and using it is i think surprisingly nice uh again less crease on the inside so if you look at the hands-on video that we published on wednesday you'll see that there's less crease uh it's not zero crease but it is noticeably nicer it's a brighter inside screen this is 3 000 nits instead of wow instead of 5 000 i didn't drop it i didn't drop it you almost dropped it um it's got almost even bezels all the way around on the front instead of having kind of like an extra bezel on the side yeah it's it's just nice yeah it's nice to hold so there's a few pretty major quality of life improvements that they added to both this one and the ultra one is the flex titanium display which is what gets rid of that crease it also makes the display components a little bit thinner we talked about that before it uses a titanium alloy underneath the oled panel and then a titanium plate that has tighter bonding all that really means is that the screen can be thinner so they can shave off some millimeters it also uses less power because there's less layers of display so they don't have to it doesn't get diffused as much other major changes are though they charge at 45 watts now because this is the first time samsung has finally finally started doing silicon carbon uh however in our briefing everyone was like so it's silicon carbon right and samsung was like we are using we are beginning to use silicon in our batteries and everyone's like so it's silicon carbon they're like we're experimenting with using a bit of silicon weird it's almost like they didn't want us to say it or or think about it as a silicon carbon battery yeah like it's still a lithium ion battery we should title this podcast episode samsung switches to silicon carbon it's strange it's like yeah look they get some benefit out of it they get higher density so they get a 5 000 milliamp hour battery on the big fold and 4800 on this one which is pretty awesome for that one i feel like this one is going to be the battery king because it's like way less screen less outside screen yeah 4800 that's pretty nice it also was the first time they've bumped up charging speed yeah so 45 watt charging and 20 watt wireless charging yeah so they're getting some of the benefits of us what we've seen from all these silicon carbon batteries but it's not like i'm holding in my other hand for audio listeners the OnePlus 15, which is a 7 ,000 milliamp hour battery with like 90 watt charging.
52:57Marques Brownlee:It's not full. RIP. RIP. And so it's like these other companies are using way more silicon in the anode, from my understanding, and they're being much more aggressive with it. But potentially, as we saw in our video, also dealing with more risks, potential swelling, other things that could go wrong in the long term future. We don't know. Samsung, extremely conservative in that department, but they're using a little bit more silicon. For a reason. and delivering respectable battery, we think. Samsung just has PTSD because the Note 7 kept exploding and because all Samsung phones, if you don't charge them over a certain period of time, the batteries just pop out the back.
53:32David Imel:They clearly have the worst battery issues. It's every Samsung phone, I swear. It's like only, yeah, anyway. It's not only Samsung phones, but it's every Samsung phone. So we'll see how it ages and longer. Wait, what is it? It's not every phone that swells is a Samsung, but every Samsung phone swells. Exactly. yeah exactly um yeah so no chi 2 because they didn't want to put the magnets in the back because they needed to keep it thin they say however chi 2 ready baby yep which if you remember means that i hate this so much there will be magnetic cases that allow for chi 2 compatibility or you just need to put a sticker on the back like a pleb yeah like a pleb just like the oneplus just like every other phone yeah just like every other phone yeah so um there are a few kind of interesting updates to the software uh on the ultra and i think on this one as well there's that gemini automated tasks thing that they introduced last year where gemini can basically just like order doordash for you and stuff like that and on the pixel when they were having it on the pixel last year you can just see it tapping all the buttons for you on this one it will do that but it'll do it in a small window so you can see it happening but you can do other stuff while it's doing that yeah which is nice i suppose very strange picture in picture picture automation yeah um there's also a new now nudge feature on the flip where if you don't know now what nudge was which i don't blame i think it's on all of them it's on all of them but the flip is the one where it's like the most prominent uh it's this little pill that'll like kind of come in when it thinks that you can do something interesting so for example on these phones when someone texts you and say it says and you have it open someone texts you and say what's your calendar like next week what does your calendar look like next week a little thing will like float in from the side and if you tap it it'll open your calendar and split screen so you just like quickly see and I think that's kind of cool it's nice magic cue but outside and not only in messages right like it's a little more inside the software yeah uh and on the flip they now have these like generative ui now nudge cards which is interesting uh for now brief and stuff like that where you can say to it like i want to know what the pollen levels are like every morning and then it'll create it'll like generate a ui for a little card that every morning will tell you what the pollen levels are going to be like how well this works i don't know it seemed like it was pretty on the rails they only had like three categories for it they had weather videos which i think is just like youtube video updates nice and what was the last one like cow oh health health so i'm assuming it'll like you can say tell me what my average heart rate was every morning or something like that or how do i sleep something like that you need one that's like tell me if it's going to rain for only more than two hours today right and in the future not in honestly may try that on the flip.
56:32May try that on the flip just to see if it works. Yeah, Google famously likes to announce things at Samsung events and they announced quite a few things at this event too.
56:43David Imel:Yeah, I feel like we see Rick Osterloh at events for other companies more than Google companies. For sure. I mean at the Pixel event last year they did all of the AI testing on an S25 Ultra or whatever, right? Because it wasn't working on the Pixel which is very ironic. We did have one other really big announcement. What is that? Samsung Galaxy card. Oh, yeah. We got to talk about that. I don't really need to talk about it, but it's there. Do we need to talk about it? We don't need to talk about it. They made a credit card. They made a credit card. Just like the Apple card. Yeah. Seems like slightly better cash rewards.
57:20David Imel:A couple extra percent. F*** that. It has stable coin now. Oh, boy. It's your wallet for all the things. I am wondering. It does say 5 % cash rewards on eligible purchases made directly with Samsung. but if you really Samsung your life think about how much more there is than Apple like refrigerator, washer, dryer Samsung can make your whole house essentially and if you get 5 % cash back on all of that probably can't but if you're building or buying a house and you plan on buying all Samsung appliances then I guess you could get the card
57:54Marques Brownlee:get yourself a Galaxy card
57:56David Imel:I didn't think about that, that's actually a good point if you're building a studio I think one of the main things here is it's 3 % cash rewards on purchases made on Samsung wallet. So I think it might be a way to be like, we want people using Samsung wallet. Yeah. Because that's like 1 % better than most cards. Anyway, we're not a finance podcast. This is not financial advice. The last thing we have to talk about specifically that we didn't really see coming because they didn't show this at our briefings is that, of course, they used Samsung Impact as an opportunity. to actually show off the Gemini glasses with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.
58:36They do actually look pretty good, I will have to say.
58:41David Imel:And by show off, you mean they showed them and then turned off the screen before showing any actual specs or information about them? Once again, I feel like they announced these like three years ago and they announced this integration or this partnership with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. And then they just like won't let you see how they work or anything about them. that had Ellis and I kind of like curious, but they didn't say anything about it, which is that it looked like there's a switch on the glasses. Yeah, there's a little switch. That would be useful to like turn off the camera or turn on the camera.
59:11It's probably just to turn the glasses on and off, but if it's literally a camera power switch, that would be amazing. That would be awesome.
59:19David Imel:Or a physical slide. Like that would solve the majority of the issues of like allowing these into places if they're your regular glasses is I have to see you turn the physical slide on. Ellis and I looked at each other like, hmm, a switch you say. Yeah. So they showed them off at the event to reporters that were there, but they wouldn't let them put them on, which is a giant red flag.
59:41Marques Brownlee:Huge, rippling in the wind, massive red flag. And by the way, these don't have a screen, so they couldn't even put them on. Like, they didn't even say, like, you can't turn them on. They said you can't put them on your face, which is crazy. So I don't know. It's a wearable, but just don't wear it. Right. They said we'll know more in the fall, but I feel like we've been waiting over and over and over again for actual details about these. But here we are. They're competing for the most re-announced product in history with the Tesla Roadster and Apple Intelligence. That's true.
1:00:15David Imel:Did we see the Google Meet thing before? I feel like that was...
1:00:19Marques Brownlee:I thought that was at I.O. When they got on stage and they had a lot, like janice was they did some demo on io where they went on stage and the camera was on and i think it was a meeting um but if not then maybe it's a new thing where like you can be in a google yeah like you can be in a google meeting with your glasses and just your glasses so your phone's in
1:00:40David Imel:your pocket it's joined and they see what you see oh yeah i'm i i misinterpreted that you seemed really pumped by it and i kept being like why i don't know i wasn't pumped by it but it just the only new thing. But I interpret it as you have a meeting up on your computer and you can toggle the glasses as a webcam. Or on the phone. You probably could do it on either. Yeah, you could probably do that. For me, like in a meet, I almost never, I would always want it facing my face, I feel like. Usually. But I guess not. I guess I was thinking of it as phone. Like I'd rather just switch the camera around on my phone than like, Hey David, check this out.
1:01:20David Imel:how'd that look you don't think they're preparing for the future when ai tokens are too expensive like i feel like when these smart glasses first happening the ai glasses the the demo we'd always get is like oh my wife needs me to get me a i need to get a zucchini for i don't know what zucchini is now you can just google meet your wife directly and be like is this a zucchini damn yeah instead of having gemini just looking at it and saying what is this is this a zucchini take that one step further when claire's just in the living room and i'm in the pantry i'm like i swore we had those chickpeas and she's like did you look like they're right there the good you're looking at them looking directly look up the people at samsung have re-engineered being useless back to first principles and it's you know i think it's just great yeah so the pricing on pretty much all these are like a hundred dollars more than they were last year um which considering on the phone sorry which considering i don't want to you know i don't want to be too friendly but considering ramageddon i was expecting and them like renaming it to the ultra i was expecting it to be like at least 150 or 200 more expensive um you do still get the same storage and to be honest for an ultra phone foldable costing 2100 bucks 256 is It's not a lot of storage, and that kind of sucks.
1:02:42But, you know, I did expect it to be worse. That's all I have to say. I wonder if they can get that much worse when you're already at such a high price point.
1:02:49David Imel:I mean, they could. You're not wrong. It can always get worse. It can always get worse. Apple's will probably be 2 ,600 is my guess. It'll start at 512 gigs of storage. That's my guess.
1:02:59Marques Brownlee:I was going to say, my two thoughts that I keep having on this small fold, the Fold 8, uh one is it does feel like this is for a more casual user like the they kept talking about the the full the foldate ultra as like the productivity phone like this is two phones next to each other basically when you open it up and like have two apps side by side do all this productivity stuff it's got the most battery triple cameras all this stuff okay great this phone is a little more casual than that it's still more of a phone than a regular phone but it's a little more media a little more like looking at your photos photo editing if you want um a little bit less of like the multitasking productivity it was weird how they positioned it i think they said something
1:03:43David Imel:like it's the size for the everyday person i was like you just did the 2100 and that's not i guess
1:03:53Marques Brownlee:yeah i guess i'm thinking of the foldate ultra as like the power user enthusiast i'm gonna spend two thousand dollars on this phone and like use the crap out of it and like multitask email all this stuff on my phone don't they have the same chips they do but this is way less screen not way less but this is less screen okay wait i have a question yeah does this one have apv recording
1:04:14David Imel:let me check yeah it does it does in the camera yeah it's a different camera so it's literally just smaller yeah with one less camera yeah again does it have it the telephoto camera makes Something ultra, apparently. We basically got confirmation that the three cameras confirms ultra now because they called it the ultra camera. Yeah. Because it was three cameras. Yeah. Okay. I have a hot take, too. I have a hot take. Okay. They position this as being the media consumption device, whereas the ultra, they were the work device, the productivity device. Right. Nobody is doing productivity on their phone.
1:04:50I kind of did that. With two screen? Oh, wait. Do you? Okay. how often do you use the split screen on foldable on the big fold yeah
1:05:01Marques Brownlee:yeah i mean back when i was what i would say i would have like one use case that i would do which was i would have email and notes next to each other or email and tasks next to each other and i would wasn't it hard to type on the email if you had to be on like half of the well i'm going back and forth but yeah it is usually annoying yeah it's it's still kind of a small screen to be doing all this i think ultimately most people do mostly consumption and like you said andrew like email is not i don't know email is like neither productivity nor it is technically
1:05:31David Imel:productivity but it's like it's necessity yeah it's email yeah it's just email i would almost argue i think productivity in split screen would work better in this squat wider version because first of all it's 16 by 10 right isn't that the aspect ratio of almost every laptop like in existence. When it's closed. No, when it's open.
1:05:51Marques Brownlee:4x3 when it's open. 4x3 when it's open. Oh. 16x10 when it's closed.
1:05:54David Imel:I'm an idiot then. Cool. But most of the time, I'd rather have width on separate windows than height. Yes. Height doesn't give me a lot of extra information on the thing I'm doing right then unless, I'm sure there's coders out there, but I don't think anyone's coding on this. Yeah.
1:06:09Marques Brownlee:Yeah, so does it have decks? I haven't tried. I will try for you though. I will try. So yeah, anyway, $1 ,900 for a more casual fold is an interesting spot to land that's the first thought i had the other thought i have had and i mentioned this in the hands-on video is like we're expecting the folding iphone later this year that's no question gonna be more expensive that we're all thinking mid twos like 2400 2600 yeah and i think it's going to be even shorter and even wider so like more squat and then you open it and it becomes like 16 by nine. I think that's what we've seen in these like clay models and stuff like that.
1:06:49David Imel:Wasn't the whole leak that this one, the reason Samsung did this one was because it's like the same screen basically?
1:06:55Marques Brownlee:It doesn't seem like it is. I mean, they're definitely mimicking the passport thing again because we're going back to that. And maybe this is a better time for that. Like the tech is better for the passport thing. This is now we have Silicon Carbon, that the phones are thinner. They're more deliable at this size. so instead of having crappy batteries it's like yeah the passport thing actually works again but i i do think the apple one is a little bit of a different shape again than this one mac rumors come from the surface duo mac rumors is saying it's 5.5 on the outside and 7.8 on the inside which is the same 7.8 though because it's a different ratio so i think it's like it's 5.5 but it's even more like short on the outside screen and then when you open it it's wider than 4x3.
1:07:38Marques Brownlee:Interesting. I believe. That would be funny though because outside of that, didn't you say it's 16x10 or is the inside 16x10? The outside is 16x10. The inside is 4x3.
1:07:48David Imel:Well, 16x10 is the exact aspect ratio of the MacBook Pro. Yeah. So Samsung's doing the Apple ratio and Apple's doing the who knows ratio. Can I pitch an intro for the review of this? Yes. All right. You dress up like Goldilocks and you get in the room and you go, oh this is such a nice phone and you pick up the ultra and you're like but it's just too big only if we put you in a bear costume i may have just read goldilocks elaine last night but it's fresh on the mind what we couldn't tell wait keep going how does the rest of the intro go you come over you're like oh and you put it down and get to the flip you're like oh this is so nice but it's just too small and then you come over and then you open the eight and you're like this is weirdly named, but it's just right.
1:08:33Yeah.
1:08:34David Imel:For the actual intro, we're going to act all that out, but we're going to replace the dialogue with that. And then three bears just come in and beat the s*** out of it. Where's the porridge come into this? I feel like there's got to be porridge. You could start with porridge if you want. He just says porridge dribbling down his shirt. Yeah. Looking at the phones. Okay. Well, that's pretty much it. Banger intro. Banger intro. That's pretty much it. I'm glad we can charge them at 45 watts. Pretty cool. I'm a daily this thing, man. I think those The new one's sweet. Yeah, the 8 is sweet. I kind of want the 8, the Fold 8.
1:09:09David Imel:I just want a phone that's that aspect ratio, not folding. At the briefing when I was using it, what I was really thinking about a lot is this doesn't really feel like a phone. It feels like a gadget.
1:09:19Marques Brownlee:I did bring up the Surface Duo, and I was hoping that would go well, and I think it did. We don't invoke that name. I know, I know, I know. But hear me out. The good parts of the Surface Duo, remember the dual embargo? Yeah. Where it was like, all right, you guys can talk about the body.
1:09:32David Imel:But I think it was triple embargo. The first embargo
1:09:35Marques Brownlee:was like you can talk about the hardware. Just do not turn it on. Do not show any of the software. Do not review it. So the first one comes out. We all of course want to be in the first wave to be like hey I have the device I'm starting to test it. I'm allowed to talk about the hardware. And the hardware is nice. It's like nice to hold. It's really thin. The 360 hinge like it's just kind of a cool shape. It doesn't even feel like a phone. It's just a nice gadget that I want to use. Anyway stay tuned for the next video. And then the next video would be like, all right, the software is time and it's bad.
1:10:04Marques Brownlee:The digitizer didn't work. But again, it was years ago. The battery tech wasn't good. It was too thin. The bezels were huge. There were so many other things that were bad about it. Software was bad. Maybe we've gotten to the point where the tech is good enough that this is a thing we can try again. Yeah. I'm just super down for the gadgetiness of it. Because it doesn't really feel like you're using a phone. It's so wide, even vertically. it does rock it does rock in multiple ways but it's so wide vertically that like even when you're reading a website it's way more enjoyable to read a website on the front screen than it is on a normal phone like the internet is just more formatted for a wider screen and uh this is why you like arc yeah it's just yeah exactly so um yeah i don't know exactly right isn't that nice it almost feels like a tablet it's like so nice
1:10:59David Imel:you know what was the moment that made me really want it when it was announced the size they announced it they turned it sideways in the Kindle app and it just turned into an e-reader and I was like oh that's kind of fire actually in the briefing they mentioned that in when you have it open and you have it in the vertical orientation it's the it's the orientation of an e-reader is what they said specifically 3x4 which I don't know e-readers that are 3x4, but I guess some are.
1:11:27Marques Brownlee:It's nice. They're all different. That's nice. Isn't that nice? This is nice. Anyway, stay tuned for the full review. It is no doubt in the works because I'm going to throw my SIM card in this and we'll see how it goes. Yep. But yeah, what else should we talk about? We can talk about trivia questions. Let's talk about trivia. And then we got some more stuff after the break. Trivia
1:11:47David Imel:dude scored 0-0-0-0-0-0-0. So there we go. While showing off 1UI9, On the new flip, they swiped down at one point to reveal media controls. I was barely paying attention. Yeah, I know. See, you weren't paying attention. What song was playing when they swiped down?
1:12:05Marques Brownlee:I don't know, man. You don't know? It must have been a song I don't know. If it's ever a song that I do know, I think I would remember that. Oh, you know this. I do know the song. You do know the song. Oh, that's too bad. I wouldn't pick some random K-pop song you wouldn't know. It's one of the new songs on the new Streetlight Manifesto. Yeah, it's definitely. That would be the craziest Streetlight.
1:12:24David Imel:I was saying LeBron was going to announce to Philly during the event.
1:12:28Marques Brownlee:Oh man, I did not know this. Just saying. I was paying attention too. Not for points. You know what e-reader does have a 3x4 ratio screen?
1:12:37David Imel:Minimal phone. No. Don't say the light phone. The minimal phone. Minimal phone. It's not an e-reader. I read on it. I read books. I'm reading off my laptop right now. It's electronic and it's... Okay, hold on. Let's not get any of those things here. Alright. Well, we'll have the answers for you. We'll be right back.

1:14:01Marques Brownlee:welcome back uh this is off the top of the dome but i wanted to try to think of a way to explain something i saw on my feed in tech terms it's an athletic feat it's the new mile world record i don't know if you guys saw this in london i think about a week ago um so i want to get the time right three minutes 42.66 seconds oh you googled it already okay so josh kerr ran the mile in three minutes 42.66 seconds according to ai overview and that is correct uh that's a tenth off of the the previous mile world record which was set in 1999 by jacquemel garouge from morocco um that by the way is one of the greatest races ever run both first place and second place both went under the previous world record mile.
1:14:48Marques Brownlee:Dang. And then this guy, Josh, goes out and he's been like saying he's going to break the world record for like weeks and weeks. And he finally gets to it. He gets on that stage. The crowd's on their feet the whole time. And he goes out with these pace setters and he runs essentially like a 13 and a half second 100 meter dash 16 times in a row. There's no way to like contextualize how fast this mile is other than to just go try to do it yourself and realize it's ridiculous. I could do that. it's crazy anyway he breaks the world record for the mile and I'm trying to think of a way to explain it in tech terms breaking a 26 year old world record and saying you were gonna do it you guys both nodded I don't know I just knew we had the same idea you go ahead
1:15:34David Imel:you go ahead it was like it was like when Fable disproved the um conjecture two days ago the Jacobian conjecture
1:15:43Marques Brownlee:what is this I don't know what this is like a math problem from like 1920s and some dude just like worked with Fable and 1939 some dude like worked with Fable and figured out a counterexample of the Chekhovian conjecture has to do with wrapping planes in 3D space it's way too smart for me to understand this is so funny because I was like I was watching this all happen on Twitter I promise we'll get back to running. I was watching this all go down on Twitter, and every single person was like, at Grok, can you please explain this to me simply? And it was not simple. And then someone would be like, like I'm a five-year-old, and it was not simple.
1:16:28And I was just like, I'm never going to understand this. Anyway, is that what you were thinking of too, Adam? That's really funny. I was thinking the exact same thing because it's been something that hasn't been,
1:16:38David Imel:what, disproven or proven for like, since 1939? They found a counter example. That's what it was. So basically, the conjecture is false, and therefore, a lot of things about math are now different.
1:16:50Marques Brownlee:Isn't that theoretically what AI was, at least like five years ago when I was first learning about it, was supposed to be doing? Yes. It was supposed to be like finding things humans couldn't find.
1:16:58David Imel:No, no, no, no.
1:17:00Marques Brownlee:Animated gerbils in the middle of an unpacked event. Animated depressed gerbils. I was learning about both quantum computers and AI at the same time, but it was like, oh, yeah, we'll be able to pattern recognition. We were able to identify diseases in like x-rays that human doctors couldn't find. It was all this promising stuff. And this sounds like kind of up that alley. I'm guaranteeing you that OpenAI and Anthropic are jumping for joy right now because they've been telling people that AI is going to be able to do this. This has been like the basis of all their funding. Yeah. And now. Can I ask a stupid question?
1:17:40did they just type in no can you solve this no and it was the okay not a stupid question because they didn't but um in response to this some dude on twitter was like hmm i wonder if i can find something and i he just said like disprove a random conjecture and it did disprove one that no one had disproved before but apparently in this period of time there were just hundreds of conjectures being made that like the list is so long that nobody has wanted to do it because it's like a track it's like just pointless um and so i found a random one and it did solve a problem um but it wasn't an important problem like breaking a sub four minute marathon right or
1:18:22Marques Brownlee:back to that back to that yeah so how do you do it i mean the training the shoes the modern medicine
1:18:30David Imel:the whoa hold on you can't just throw modern medicine without me assuming when you break a
1:18:36Marques Brownlee:world record so like the original like theoretical human limit for the mile was like breaking a four minute mile like that that was the roger banister famous like oh my god he did it he ran under four minutes once he ran under four minutes then humans were like oh we can do under four minutes and then the world record continually got lower and lower three minutes and 50 seconds three minutes and now 46 seconds yeah so the fact that hickam algarooj broke this world record in 1999 there's been a ton of advancements in sports since then the shoes the training the medicine the recovery the everything and it still took 26 27 more years of that for someone to break his record yeah which makes it
1:19:19David Imel:seem like it was pretty sick when it happened can i ask a question that we may or may not keep in a pod because you might not know sure do you know if there were people running in front of him like as a vanguard to break the air for which i thought he said for the new one the new one or Or was he just like...
1:19:34Marques Brownlee:Yeah, so it's outdoor track. It's a famously fast track. The first lap, he has two pacesetters. The next lap, he has one pacesetter. And then he runs the last lap and a half alone in the lead. And it's not so much breaking the air, but it's like this track has lights alongside the bottom of the track to identify exactly where you have to be at what speed where you need to be to break the world record. So the old world records in the 90s was just like, this guy ran as fast as he could. And he passed the line and then discovered that it was a world record where these guys are like, all right, this is the record I'm gonna break and I'm gonna train to do exactly that.
1:20:09Marques Brownlee:I'm gonna run exactly this pace. I'm gonna have pace setters who are setting it up for me to follow them and then they're gonna leave and I'm gonna run the last lap and a half as hard as I can.
1:20:17David Imel:Where is that track?
1:20:18Marques Brownlee:London. That sounds sick. It sounds, yeah. Well, there's lots of tracks now that have these lights. Oh, really? Let's go to one. I wanna do that. It's pretty cool. And to try to keep up with the lights is probably very hard.
1:20:28David Imel:Yeah, so anyway. That would be really funny. It would be really funny if we took the entire team spaced us out and saw if collectively we could get anywhere close where we're all only running like we definitely couldn't like a hundred yards each 400 would be like a sprint for us oh yeah
1:20:45Marques Brownlee:yeah yeah more than it yeah yeah a four by four for four people at the studio with so no i mean all 16 of us oh all of us maybe if we ran like 100 meter sprints for each of us because there's 16 of us going down josh i used to be a sprinter sorry to break it to you josh that would be four
1:21:01David Imel:Three ACLs ago, I might have been able to help. Yeah. That's funny.
1:21:05Marques Brownlee:Anyway, now you know. Tech helped us. Well, there's a couple tech news stories I wanted to bring up. One, Peak Design just launched a really cool, what they call, field bracket. It's part L bracket, part modular cage for your camera. And it also hides a tracker tag in the bottom of the cage, which is really cool. So, if you don't know what an L bracket is, uh for cameras it's like a piece of metal that slaps on to the bottom inside of your camera that allows you to put your camera on a tripod but in a vertical orientation so they can shoot in portrait orientation um also there's an attachment called a cheese plate which is just basically like a bunch of holes that'll slap onto it which a good cheese plate exactly it allows you to attach like a light or a or a microphone or like different things like that every time i talk about cheese plates to people who are not in the industry they also confusion confusion ensues
1:22:01David Imel:but universally loved but yeah we both love cheese plates for sure and i started talking
1:22:06Marques Brownlee:about like the things i attach to cheese plates and like what are you talking about you know how you have beers and cameras yeah you should have cheese plates and cheese plates well that's actually smart that's fire i'm getting the instagram today uh okay but the coolest thing about this because i am famously notoriously clumsy is that they have a new tracker tag that Peak Design is making that sits flush in the bottom of the cage, in the bracket, which is really cool. And it works on both Apple Find My and Google Find Hub. Lasts for about six months. You can replace the, but then you can just replace the battery.
1:22:40It's a basic coin-operated battery. And so that's really nice. I just like, I need ways to not lose my cameras because currently on like all of my cameras, I have an AirTag just like hanging off of the strap. I have a new petition.
1:22:55Marques Brownlee:okay i've already petitioned that all cameras have should have built-in storage yeah i think they should all also have gps ready find my yeah abilities i like that just model densism yeah just right on the camera i agree with that yeah that'd be great um so yeah they peak design always runs their pre-orders of stuff on kickstarter so they have it on kickstarter there is a kickstarter price the base bracket with the l bracket and the plate is 125 dollars 200 dollars if you want every accessory which comes with the tracker it comes with a hand grip it comes with the cheese plate it comes with i'm in that yeah so it's pretty cool they do have it a very limited number of cameras and it's mostly the the brand new model of every camera line so if you have like a last gen model it might not work but they do have a form where you can that you can fill out where you could ask them if they'll make a certain one and i'm assuming if they get enough demand for certain cameras.
1:23:48David Imel:I always love those. That's like we're listening but you're just throwing this into the void, right? It is funny because it's literally just a type form and it's like giving a type form to a large company always feels like are you even looking at these? Yeah, yeah. We care. We promise we're listening. Yeah. Just go straight into the garbage. I mean if they could make enough money off of it because honestly especially an accessory like this that is just cut metal I think probably has a very big margin and they could make a lot of money on it other cool thing about it is that the modular aspects of it where you can like slide in the cheese plate or slide in the hand grip um it just uses a finger tension like thing so you don't need any tools to to change out the the parts of it which is cool um so just want to bring that up they just announced that yesterday last thing this is more of a depression indicator thing um apple is reportedly going to launch an apple upgrade Do you mean recession indicator?
1:24:48No, I do not.
1:24:49Marques Brownlee:I mean, a great, a great, a large recession is a great depression. So it depends on how deep in this recession we are. Oh, we're deep is. I think David meant the other kind of depression. Is it depressing? Or is it? Por que no los dos? I think usually you say a recession indicator. I think that's what you meant to say. No. You meant depressing. He meant a great depression indicator. Okay. Great depression to Apple Boogaloo. The depressioning. So Apple is reportedly going to launch an Apple upgrade leasing program. So just like you can lease a car. Lease? Bro. Yep. You are now reportedly going to be able to lease Apple devices.
1:25:29It will work similarly to a car lease. Oh, this is like what carriers are doing, basically. Yeah, I guess technically, yes. And Apple has been trying very, very hard to get people to buy phones directly from them and computers. What sucks about this is it only comes with like 20 ,000 miles, which is crazy. Yeah, true. You have to pay about a mile after that. But it will be available for most new iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch models. There will be 24-month leases for iPhones, Apple Watches, and 36-month leases for iPads and Macs. Please do not lease an iPad. Please don't lease an iPad. Okay, wait.
1:26:05I'm confused about this. Yes. At the end of it, do you own the iPad or do you have to give it back? You have to give it back unless you buy it out. So if I... Wait, okay. So just like a car, you know how with a lot of cars, you can lease a car and then lease to own.
1:26:21Marques Brownlee:And then lease to own. Yeah. You pay the remaining balance. That's the option that Apple will reportedly give you. OK, so I don't have to like rebuy it at the end of me leasing. No, but it's probably I don't we don't know the the details yet, but it may be more expensive buying it over time. The total amount out of your pocket will be higher than just buying it. but you spread the payments out over a long enough time so as to not pay that lump sum all at once. Yeah. Yeah. Financing. Financing. Yeah. I think that Apple is probably like, hmm, Klarna is taking all of our finance money. Also, they did just up the prices significantly of like all of their devices.
1:26:58So people might actually need to do this now.
1:27:00David Imel:Also, it is Klarna. Oh, it's through Klarna? German says Klarna will be Apple's financial backer for the new program. Financial backer. So Apple's not even taking a risk, basically. I mean I'm not I'm surprised it took this so long to clarna an iPhone if I can clarna Taco Bell dude you can clarna a martini yeah you can pay off your martini and like 16 cents I don't like it installments ridiculous don't do that yeah budget devices will not be uh included in this so you cannot buy the MacBook Neo with it you can't buy the base iPad or base iPhone or Apple Watch SE um but it will reportedly launch on the 28th which is in just a few days this is not a financial advice podcast but try to avoid this yeah maybe maybe try to not try not to do that there are a lot of uh used devices available on the market i really really recommend buying a used phone or a used computer there are also and again not financial advice but there's lots of retailers that offer store bought credit like store credit cards that have zero fees and will let you zero interest finance over two years.
1:28:09David Imel:But also try not to finance. There, you guys are too pessimistic. There's a lot of success stories, like those gaming PCs you could rent, and then all you have to do is become a pro Fortnite player. And then... Fortnite's on the iPad. That's true. You're losing money if you don't do this. If you don't lease an iPad. Yeah. Wow. Apple strikes again. They're genius. They always think of a thing. They always think of it. Who said yeah to this? Apple. Yeah. The bank. Yeah. Klarna. Didn't they already have this with iPhones? They had a financing thing through the Apple card. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know, man.
1:28:52David Imel:Why have one financing when you can have two financing?
1:28:55Marques Brownlee:Yeah, they've really gotten into financial services. They have the Apple credit card now, and then they have the buy now, pay later, and all this other stuff. It's a good time. so if this actually you know launches on the 28th we should is next week the 20 a week from today is the 29th so we might be able to talk about it next week we'll have more details next week theoretically potentially
1:29:18David Imel:I'll finance a Mac Pro M6 Ultra an Intel Mac Pro and I'll let you know how it goes alright cool are they launching this because the next iPhone I mean, Marquez, didn't you say that there was an insane German tweet this morning where he said there will be a new and a new and a new and a new. I'll read it if you want. Read it to me. OK. Just like Andrew reads Lane. Yeah. As we record on Wednesday, this is the tweet that showed up on my timeline.
1:29:52Marques Brownlee:Read me German reports, Marquez, to go to sleep, too. news apple ready's end-to-end mac overhaul including m6 macbook pro and new iMacs this year and several new redesigned macbook pros with touch and oled and new macbook air and macbook neo models across the end of this year and next year wow so all the macs all the macs other than the mac studio i'm mac mini well i'm excited for the touchscreen ultra same let's take to trivia this won't make me depressed this will make me very happy because now i'll finally do well again in trivia marquez i have a perfect technology for your mile okay it's just like
1:30:32David Imel:phone company made a passport phone called the passport and then no one did it and now we're back so who made it i don't know if i want to remember this what year 2014 so i'm in college
1:30:52Marques Brownlee:a year that i for some reason associate with j cole so okay forest hill drive baby
1:31:01David Imel:i don't think i associate 2014 with anything 2014 Forest is trash. What happened in 2014? Ready? J. Cole. Double platinum, no features. Oh, that's what it was. I can't. I'm not sure. I thought this was earlier, to be honest. Those are grapes, by the way. Have you? Never mind. Doesn't matter.
1:31:23Marques Brownlee:All right, I was wrong. I'll just say mine. I wrote HTC. Is there an HTC passport? Should we Google that just to make sure? No, I was just thinking about 2014, just what was happening. I was not thinking about that. HTC was happening.
1:31:34David Imel:I think we used to have a red one in the drawer upstairs. A red passport. Blackberry passport. Which is the correct answer. We did. I thought that was a way older device. I don't know why.
1:31:46Marques Brownlee:Yeah, Blackberry was on Death's Door for a long time. They were close. Yeah. Until like late into the 2000 teens or whatever it was. They made a couple fun Android phones. Yes. Yeah. The one that slid and then you could drag your finger along the keyboard and it worked as a mouse. That one called. I'm trying to remember the name. The iReview. Priv. The Priv. Yeah, Priv. Priv. That's a good poll.
1:32:06David Imel:I'm a BlackBerry boy. Yeah, why do you know all these names? Speaking of fun phones, the one UI 9 preview on the flip that was just announced. Media Racer.
1:32:19Marques Brownlee:I'm purely guessing this one.
1:32:20David Imel:What song was playing in the media player when they swiped? Oh, in the media. Nobody here has any idea what it is, right? No clue. Can we all request a hint or else just none of us are going to get it? No. Wait, wait. Okay The hint is The hint is Ellis loves this song We've spoken about it multiple times On Trivia Extravaganza of the past We've spoken about it multiple times Just in conversation Wait And it's not really a song There's no words Are there words? There's words Three words This is all framing up for my question to be fit all those stipulations but be wrong.
1:33:05Marques Brownlee:That was a really big hint, but I didn't have enough time to do that. Do you guys want another hint?
1:33:10David Imel:Well, if we all get it wrong, then give us one more hint. Flip them and read. What do we got? Oh my god. Andrew, if we all get it wrong.
1:33:21Marques Brownlee:We're all wrong. What did you guys write? I wrote Friday by Rebecca Black. No.
1:33:26David Imel:I wrote 100 Gex. No. I wrote All the Pieces by Streetly Manifesto. No. Okay. Here's the hints. the artist you know how there's like the song title song artist whatever artist samsung oh what is that song called what is that song called what is that song called i don't know what it's called it has a name i know damn it i don't know i think i know one of the words in the title which is gonna be really rough if it's not more than one word Oh, we have talked about this so many times. So many times. Might have even been a trivia question. It was. It's definitely. It was a trivia question a long time ago.
1:34:07David Imel:Shlipman Reed, what do you got? Oh. Is that what it's called? No, I don't think so. I don't know. Someone read an answer. Mark has to go first.
1:34:22Moonlight Sonata. Oh my gosh. Does it have the word ocean in it? Okay. I wrote Beyond the Galaxy, but that's not it either. So good. Kind of a banger, honestly. I unfortunately have... The answer? Oh. Over the horizon. Over the horizon? That's a really good guess. Yeah. Beyond the Galaxy, Over the Horizon.
1:34:45David Imel:So good. That's the special Dirty Loops version. Why is that kind of a bob? It is a bob. Wait, hold on a second. Have we never played this video for you? Wait. I don't know. I don't know how much more I can play. Yeah. It's this band from... If Samsung can steal Spider-Man, I think we can just play those. We're hyping them up. There's a Scandinavian band called Dirty Loops and who Samsung hired to cover the ringtone over the horizon in 2016. Oh, but is that a YouTube channel that's posting it? Because then they could strike our stuff. It's Samsung's YouTube channel. I say we let it roll. Let's let it roll, baby.
1:35:20David Imel:And if you can't access this podcast on YouTube.com, you're probably in Russia. You know who did it. Are we going to get demonetized for playing it?
1:35:30Marques Brownlee:No. They would love us to share it. And if we do, we'll mute it.
1:35:35David Imel:Okay. And then it'll just be a weird silent part. And everyone will know why. People won't like that. A certain Korean mega company did not want us using their funky little tune. F***ing LG, man.
1:35:47Marques Brownlee:And on that note, the pod is over. Let it roll, baby. Thanks for watching. Thanks for listening. We are back on our regular scheduled programming. we all have zero points on trivia still
1:35:57David Imel:no no no Andrew and David got it correct the first zero points on trivia I have zero points on trivia still you're in denial Marquez and I'll have to start catching up next week Marquez depression indicator see you guys then peace Waveform is produced by Adam and Elena and Ellis Rovin we're part of the Vox Media Podcast Network and our Troutro Mutants was created by Vane Still
