1:31All right. Welcome. This is Verge and Waveform. Trivia extravaganza. You probably might not know my name if you're on the Vergecast feed. I am Adam Alina, the producer of Waveform. I'm Ellis Rovin, the other producer of Waveform. And we are going to pit the hosts of our two podcasts together today. How are you guys feeling? Terrified. It was good and now it's bad. They were only asking you guys. Yeah, because this idea was so much better five minutes ago. I feel great. Too late to back up. This is great. It's really sitting next to like a hardened competitor like Marika. It's like your confidence really drops.

2:07I will say he is extremely competitive. He's been plotting for weeks on this. And we only found out about it like a week ago. But he knew somehow. Been researching just various things. So if you've never listened to our trivia game before, we do things in a pretty not unusual way. We're going to pose a question. You guys each have a whiteboard. Excuse me. Let me backpedal a little bit. We have three categories of questions for you tonight. Each category, each team will select one contestant to answer all the questions in that category. After you figured out your answer, write it on your whiteboard, flip it around, say it aloud, and we'll award you points or not.

2:45How are we feeling? Ready to go? I'm ready. Yes. All right. With that, let's kick off some trivia. Oh, my God. Trivia. Yeah, dude. Let's go. Yeah. All right. All right. All right. The first category is... Were you paying attention? Were you paying attention? Questions about the minutiae of WWDC 2023. Oh, we're so... I wish you'd make that decision. You bet I would. Wait, so just like details? We have to pick our fighters, right? Yeah, so you guys need to pick... Who do you want to answer this question? I love the idea of this being David v. David. Yeah. Let's do it. We're allowed to confirm. Were you paying attention?

3:25Over here. All right. Were you paying attention? can't stop us wait david were you paying attention i think so okay i was live blogging which means i was not like brain like water just everything came out into my fingers and immediately the problem david is we were all live i know all right i'm ready what's your excuse it's hard wait andrew did you remember do you want to show i was capturing you being upset at the mac pro not coming i think i was paying attention but the hard thing is we don't know the other categories David, I've heard a lot of excuses. Let's go. David be David. Let's lock it in.

3:55Go. David be David. Who will be the best David? All right. All right. First question. Oh, God. How does the new Compass app show Waypoint altitude to users? Write it down. Flip them. How does the new Compass app... Why is he writing already? What's going on over there? I mean, I don't know if this is correct, but I have an idea. I don't understand. All right. I'm going to give you... Oh, you don't understand the question. That sounds like a you problem. but that's true. Hit me with it one more time. The new Compass app on the watch now displays the altitude of your waypoints. How does it visually express that altitude to the user?

4:33I see. I like that, David. Five. I'm correct. It's lines. You guys should have had this done a long time ago. One. Let's flip. What you got? Pop-up bubbles. 3D space. Those are technically the same answer. I'll give it to you. We'll say correct. So you each get one for both of us? Correct. Both? That feels great. Pop up. The answer we had bring down was the height of the stock, but both of those seem to smash. What? What does that even mean? It's one of those games. All right. Cool. Now I know what I mean. Yeah, all right. All right. All right. Settle down. Settle down. This is my game. This is my game.

5:10All right. Let's go. All right. All right. I think neither of us should have gotten that, but I'll take it. What is the stock? Stock? Listen, listen. We're going to be great on a curve here. All right. Ready? Craig mentioned a new machine learning function coming to the home screen of iPad OS. What was it?

5:32Coming to the home screen. Are you staring blankly at each other? There was a widget. Someone wasn't paying attention. David, I think we paid the same amount of attention. I missed the question. He's right. I also missed the question. Apparently, I wasn't paying attention. Three. Oh. Two. Faster. What are your answers? You gotta write, you gotta write. Okay. Let's see it guys. I've got multiple timers. Multiple timers? It's suggested apps in the spotlight search. Oh, is that on the home screen? That might be an acceptable answer. Yes. The answer we were looking for was frame interpolation on live photos.

6:12Wait, that's the one where he was like, earth looks amazing at this scale and he was holding an 11 inch iPad. How did they get that right then? Because I believe that is machine learning to do the smart stacks. Unless it's not on the home screen. I would not. You do? It's a swipe away, but we'll give it to you. I don't think I should have gotten that. Machine learning? Because I got it. Machine learning? I don't think that's machine learning. That's a Markov chain of best. So we'll take it back. Wait. Did you take it back? He told you to take it back. David's all about to take it back. Yeah. I don't deserve that.

6:42I don't think so either. Thank you. This would be chaos. I don't want this. There's a weird third David team on the stage right now. Yeah, we should form our own team. David's against each other. Next question. Let's make our own team. What was the color of the first 15-inch MacBook Air that they showed in the presentation? The first one? The first one when they announced it. 15-inch. And this, again, is the 15-inch MacBook Air. Yeah, the 15-inch. Dang. Five. Dan is very confidently whispering. Three. Two. One. Flip them and read, boys. What do you got? I put black. Starlight. I think it's Starlight.

7:18Read them one at a time, please. Black. That's not even a hard answer. Like 20 times right next to it. That is correct. I was wrong anyway. Finally, the Davids have been split apart again. Wow, this is bad. Black is a hardcore answer. There are four possible answers, and you picked a fifth. I would like to point out that there are zero Apple products named Black. Yeah, Space Grey, Midnight. Were you mouth-ing it to me? I was saying midnight. So you're saying the wrong answer. I was wrong, but at least it was an answer. At least it was in the circle. I would have guessed. Anyway, whatever. It probably was starlight, and then I was like, I don't know.

7:57It doesn't matter. It was. They said it was right. All right, all right, all right. We gave you the smart stack point back. I'm really not re-watching this two-and-a-half-hour keynote. During WWDC 2023, what made Craig exclaim, we truly live in a world of wonders? Okay. Wow, Dan's on it. Five, four, three, two, one. That was a good credit. Let them read. Multiple timers. Wave, David? Yeah, multiple timers. Okay. Multiple timers. Wave, Dave. Good job. Excellent job. My pen is barely working. Do you have that other pen? Yeah, what happened? This pen is not working. That's the first one I've been confident about.

8:39Yeah, with my feet. If my shoes were off, this would be easier. I wouldn't have gotten that one. Just saying. David, you can just pick up the marker David, take off your shoes Oh my god I didn't know you showed so many pratfalls Sorry audio listeners, you're passing a marker down Okay, next question If I used my toes, it would have been In the intro where there's a man chasing the bubble What were the final words that appeared on the screen? Oh, the bubble Dream it Dream it, chase it, blank What were those last words? I thought that was going to be multiple choice five four three two one flip them and read i'm wave david what do you got this says make it happen wow i believed marquez coding yeah oh my god that's a level of paying attention well i just thought i thought it was so funny that it stuck in the mind yeah we still have three uh are we looking for an easier question or a harder question easier easier yeah okay easier

9:50the next point should be can you pick up a marker with your feet my shoes were off i have very opposable toes oh my god how many pro display xdrs can the new mac studio support I've never seen Marques lean over faster in my entire life. Everyone on Twitter was asking who is going to use this many XDRs and I was like, Marquette. Studio Pro. Pro display XDRs, please. Oh yes, the Mac Studio, that is correct. I'm pretty sure I'm still there. Five, four, three, two, one. Wave, David, what do you got? Six. What is that number? I said six. It was an eight. I also said six. Two correct answers from the Davids.

10:40Was it 10 million? Can we dock off like a quarter of a month for not being able to write a six? That's the tiebreaker. If we tie at the end, we lose for that six. We turned an eight into a six because the Mac Pro does eight. And we knew that. When I draw with my hands, my hands cramp up. I just kind of... You should draw with your feet. That's a great idea. That's a different show. The score? We should cut that out. That's the regular waveform show. Verge cast five, waveform three. That's right. All right. Next question. We need to make moves here. We have more time, yeah. Harder answer now? Let's really think about this one.

11:12Was that the easy one or the hard one? You want me to? Yeah. Let's do two more. Okay. Next question. Oh, God. Apple added advanced metrics and features for two sports on the Apple Watch with their own slides. What were they? You got it, right?

11:29Wait. Clarification? Yeah. Were they native apps or third-party apps? Native apps. Excellent question.

11:41Five, four, three, two, one. Flip them and read. Let's go verge, David. Is this like half points? Hiking and cycling. Okay. Is hiking a sport? I don't know, but that's what they had it at. If you do it hard enough. Bad take, Andrew. David, what did you say? I had a different answer. I said cycling and hiking. Oh, good. Very nice. Yes. This is the last question of this round, and I'm going to hit you guys with a doozy. David, I just want you to know, I think we're both doing a really good job. What is going on here? That David's doing way better. He's trying to trick you into getting this wrong.

12:16You do sportsmanship at the end. But is he doing real sportsmanship or just me up because he's already doing better than me? What studio monitors were in the background of the opening shot of the opening cinematic of WWDC23? What studio monitors? I will accept a model number or a brand. Wow. Wow. Were you paying attention? Oh, yeah. I remember that one. Five, four, three, two, one. Flip him and read. Wave, David. What do you got? Are you writing right now? Yeah. Okay. David, I'm waiting for an answer. For you, that's okay. Genelec. What? Oh, wait. No, we changed our answer. It's too late. My answer is the ones Marquez has.

13:04No. The correct answer was KRK rockets. Were they really? They were. They can be noticed by their distinctive yellow circles. Right, right. Yellow circles. I thought they meant displays. Can we have five rounds? In the interest of time, we're going to keep it rolling. All right, the second category for today's show is G Fuel Flavors. That's right. We are going to read you a G Fuel flavor, and you have to tell me if it is a real flavor or if I made it up in my hotel room last night. I don't like that you're so confident about being ready for this. Dan, Eli? We already have, okay. I mean, I'll take the category.

13:52I don't know what G Fuel is. How did you guys make those sounds? Did Alex do that? It's amazing. At like 11 o 'clock last night, he was just recording into his microphone and showing you what he's coming up with. Ellis, can we please get a definition of G Fuel, and can I have it used in a sentence, please? G Fuel is a powder that becomes a liquid, or you either buy it as a liquid, and it makes you game better. That's very generic. Can I have a language of origin, please? I unfortunately cannot enlighten you. It's New Jersey. All right. The first flavor of G Fuel we have today is blood, sweat, and tears.

14:29It is a cinnamon candy flavor. Oh, wait. We never picked a contestant for this. Oh, you swapped it. It's Andrew versus Dan. I take it back. All right. Blood, sweat, and tears. Cinnamon candy flavor. Real or fake? Three, two, one. Do you want our help? One. I trust Andrew entirely with this because I have no idea. I got this, but I don't like knowing that I got this. I hope I got it. Does this group consume G Fuel? No. I like making fun of G Fuel, which is why I know more about it. Oh, yeah, sure. Okay. Yeah. You got to know you're out of here. No one look at my background. I'm upset for that. I got you.

15:06All right. Until it's not. Real or fake? Revealing. Fake. I'm going with real. Wow. It is a real flavor. Andrew, what? Oh, no. Oh, my God. We're drinking. I think Andrew is tossing the segments. We don't know how much he likes G Fuel. All right. Because you're going to really have to. What is this last category? Jesus. Thank you. The second flavor is Amnesty. Amnesty is a piña colada flavor. That's fake. I'm sorry. If it's real, it should be fake. That can't be real. That's a good way to think of G Fuel, though. That's true. If you think it should be fake, it's probably five. I think the entire concept of G Fuel, if it's real, should be fake.

15:48I'm ready. Two. one flip. I have real. I'm going with fake. Amnesty is a fake flavor. That's like Kendall Jenner in the Pepsi. It's very obvious that gamers do not drink pina coladas. That's a good point. That's a great context. They'd rather drink cinnamon candy versus a pina colada. We're getting slayed. We've been giving Andrew a lot of crap and Dan's just over here getting all the answers. I just want to point that out. The next flavor is brimstone. Brimstone is a crayon raspberry flavor. That sounds real. That feels real. But Ellis is also really good. Write whatever. I'm saying that out.

16:30Okay. Three, two, one. Look at the way he's holding his card on a plane. Flip him around. Andrew, you said. Why do we keep going? I have fake. Oh my God. I went with real. My God. We already lost this. We had to have five rounds. Brimstone is exactly the sort of word that if you're saying. It's targeting a teenage gamer. I think so. What was the flavor, though, again? You said fake. Brimstone was crayon raspberry. That sounds like too good of a flavor. No, that is perfectly targeted. That's really cramberry? It sounds like something you hear in the Doom game when you beat the boss. No, I agree with that completely.

17:02I think that I thought he was tricking us with that. Cranberry for gamers? Oh, he thought it was too real. I think that sounds too much like a nice cock. That's all right.

21:36The next flavor is Type O, like the blood type. Type O is a passion fruit flavor. Why? That's actually, this is the hardest one. This could go otherwise. I think that's fake. G Fuel passion fruit. I think that's fake. I feel like at this point, so I can blame you, dude. Wait, well, one. Flip. I'm going with fake. Type O is a real flavor of G Fuel. Weird. I thought it was just too on-brand. How? You can't tell this because I'm brown, but I'm like, embarrassed. I'm like blushing about stupid this entire situation. Alright, the final question. Why do we use this for one of the three segments? This is so much talking about G Fuel.

22:19The final flavor of G Fuel for this round is Bee Sting. Bee Sting is a fruity cereal with a dash of honey. I think that's real. You know like when you're watching an embarrassing TV show and you have to leave the room? I want out of this room so that the next one has to be good is bee sting a real flavor flip them around going with fake fake bee sting is fake but there is a flavor called scorpion sting wait wait wait he both said it right he meant to do this there you go my bad guys I got a point nice let's go I don't feel so bad anymore I can't believe I ran that unbelievable great job I never heard of G fuel a well-disguised knowledge of g-fuel over there we kind of have to have more rounds because we didn't tell you this but dan starts raw g-fuel

23:18this next round is a favorite of ours here on waveform trivia it is our audio round oh boy it is our audio round this shit we are going to play you a famous sound yes and you have to tell us its source. So as an example, if you heard... Windows XP, baby. Exactly. I would not accept Windows, but I would accept Windows XP. You do not need to be as specific as Windows XP startup sound. Windows XP would be enough. Oh, just like a general... Platinum home. Exactly. But if you had said Windows, that is not specific. You know, you just find the Windows XP startup sound in the Apple office. Home edition.

23:57The security security is coming. The SWAT team is here. Right, right, right. they're going to be coming a lot today alright this is Marquez versus Neelai let's do it the first sound is David's very upset with me oh yeah it's easy yep I'm not upset with you I'm not I wrote Netflix to doom I need to write bigger that is correct I also wrote Netflix I love it if I had gotten a perfect score then I'd be upset with you It's a slippery slope. I don't know a lot of the media ones. Also, I would have random number generator would have done just as well. The next sound is...

Read the full transcript

24:50Can I hear it again? Yes. He's writing me.

25:01five four three two one this is such a marquez shot in the dark some playstation startup sound which playstation never mind ps5 that was the ps3

25:29I was an Xbox guy at that time. Yeah, baby. Taking me back. Taking me back. I'm pretty confident about that one. Let's flip them around. Marquez, what do you got? I used Skype a lot back in the day. Skype. Two correct answers. I think Skype still looks the best, by the way. Like the app? That's my feeling. Yeah. I haven't used it in years, so I don't actually know. Probably better than Webex though. Let's move on to our next sound. Hard shot at Apple inside the Apple building again. I'm just saying. We tested out a few Apple sounds for this, but we either found they were too obvious or it would be impossible.

26:13I guess that's the beauty of Apple sound design. Up next we have. Oh, easy.

26:24I don't know, actually. Dan is confident. I was joking. Can you play it again? Can you play it again?

26:34I'm just saying. Do you think the soundstage of that was high enough? I can see the animation when I hear it. I just don't remember if it... You had that? Five. No, I didn't. Four. Then how do you see it? Two. One. Flip him and read. I said the PS Vita I said Dolby Atmos That was the Xbox Series X Startup sound Don't listen to me ever again You said it so constantly I thought it was Dolby Digital Are we tied right now? Wait, did you guys also think there was a channel I heard some whisper about, did that sound high enough? No Is the sound stage of the PS Vita High enough to actually encapsulate that I thought you meant the Z channel of the end.

27:20Never mind. We're nerds. Up next. That's exactly what I was saying. Oh, shit. Can we hear it again? I know that. Absolutely.

27:35I hate this. Damn, that's a... It's in my brain. Yeah. Five. Play it again.

27:47Four. three two okay I'm saying it any guesses yeah it can't be right I don't I wrote meta quest sorry it was a shot in the dark you're really pushing it I wrote PS5 this time unfortunately that is the Hulu startup sound that is the sound when you load the Hulu app I've never launched it in my life I want to admit this to you I know this because my wife is watching the Hillsong documentary on Hulu right now. And I've heard that sound a lot. And I thought to myself, this causes me pain. And then I immediately left to the PS5. That is so epic. No, because when I turn on my PS5, the Apple TV fights it.

28:31So I was like, this is the sound to hear before something dumb happens. When I turn on my LG TV, the PS5 also boots up and then fights the Chromecast. It's weird. We're nerds. It's weird. Wait, what's the score right now for this category? Adam, what's our score? We lost. Vergecast 12. Yeah. Waveform 7. Come on, boys. You're making us look bad. The G Fuel category was really just a random number generator. I don't know. That was like a hamster picking stocks. That's basically what the G Fuel category was. That hamster crushed it. We got one wrong. He's going to have a package of G Fuel. Don't go when he gets it.

29:07Alright. This next one, we're going to throw it back for just a few years. Alright. Oh.

29:18A few years. Throwbacks don't hit me. One more time. Play it again.

29:30There's a game console. That's all I know. Let's go. Four. Three. Two. One and a half. One and three quarters. Something completely stupid. One. Flip him and read. Uh, Mark has, what is that? My mark is crapping out, but I said PlayStation 2. I'm sorry. I wrote Wii U. Yeah. Guys, this is Windows 98, unfortunately. Oh, wow. No one used Windows 98. Everyone skipped from 95 to 2000 when they went to the NT core. Come on. All hospitals everywhere disagree. Are you even a nurse? Do I look like I was in the hospital when I was 17 years old? I was barely alive. All right. We have six minutes left. Are you online yet?

30:13For our time right here? burn for being old on top of not knowing Windows 98's out. We can do one more round in six minutes. Let's do it. Hit it. One more category or you want to keep going through the audio? One more category. One more category. Down the line with every person. Oh yeah. I like that. Okay. I like that. Okay. Yeah well. So start with you guys and then we run down six questions. And how far ahead are we? Like seven. Five points. We really should stop it. You're stuck in a way. You guys were very good. You're probably still going to win. How many G Fuel questions are left? Zero. But the next category is...

30:51Air Force One. All questions about Craig Federighi. Oh, boy. All right. Interesting. Interesting. Okay. About things you get on stage? First question. We all remember Craig's iconic slow-mo run from WWDC 2022, but what announcement was he running to? okay the slow-mo transition he ran downstairs he came a meme all over the place he was just running straight he was already in like a slow-mo transition oh was it was that the macbook here five this was a mistake four three yeah one yes marquez he was running down to m2 I've written iOS question mark the correct answer was iPadOS that's what I said this couch is the same thing if I don't get credit for PlayStation then you don't get credit for iOS iOS question mark kind of is iPadOS though I said PlayStation I was right that I whispered iPadOS into my microphone please so I pass it we can all hear the same amounts Well, clearly my boss did not hear me You could have said iPadOS We need these points, man G Fuel We're done with G Fuel Why do we do that category?

32:19Craig started working with Steve Jobs at a company that was not Apple That company was called what? Jesus I was not alive yet Stop burning me because I'm old I was already 25 years old. I had five jobs. I think it's this, right? Yeah. It's either that or... I have no idea. Five, four, three, two, one. What does that say? One. David Pierce? I believe the company is called Nix. That is correct. And that is your 13th point. David, I also said Nix. Good work. Way to go, David. Way to go, David. I was not yet alive. David's tearing it up over here. I was super alive, bro. Here's the headphone trivia stack.

33:00The internet. I was living the dream with my next cube. Never heard of this company. All right, Ellis. We knew that. All right. I don't know how I knew that. It was kind of in my head. Craig Federighi once Rickrolled the audience at Dub Dub DC. What Apple app was he showing off new features for when he did this? Oh, God. Better be so far. What Apple app? Say it again. He once Rickrolled the audience at Dub Dub. Which Apple app was he showing off during the demo? when he did this. And this is an Apple first party application.

33:38Craig is in his home just weeping right now at how little you guys pay attention. Rick Roll, like, fully, like, played this. Like, he was playing the song, and it was 2014. The song? Oh, wait, 2014? 2015. Thank you, 2015. That's probably when that came out. Yeah, it wasn't here. Five, four, three, two, They know too much. I don't like this at all. This feels too obvious. Andy? Put Apple Music. Sorry. iMovie. The correct answer was Safari. I didn't even say that. So sorry. I should have just said Safari. I'm so sorry. I said that and we erased it. Oops. Yeah, it was obviously simple. Here's a simpler one.

34:21That's what I was doing. For my Craig. This is too easy. I apologize. That was on the G Fuel curve of sounding too plausible. We're at one minute. That's my turn again? We have one minute left. We're going to blow through these. All right. This one's next. It's the next cube. At least six points, right? Can I make up the questions? I'm so sorry. Absolutely not. Just send it. For what it's worth, you're going to lose anyway, Marcus. All right, cool. Two more questions in the Craig round. First question. Craig almost always wears a shirt of a shade of what color? That's too easy. You know, I was getting that too.

34:50Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I need like a good five point question. That's true. A good five point question. You know? I still think we'd lose. I believe you. I'm pretty sure I'm right. No, we tie. I'm pretty sure I'm right. Do you not immediately know? No. I mean, I did. Wow. Is it weird that I know that? I knew that too, actually. Is this weird? Three. Am I weird? I don't know. I knew that too. One. It's definitely blue. Yeah, it's blue. Two correct answers. For sure. Two points. Final answer. A lot of jeans on stage. Let's go. Our last one. Our last Craig question is. I liked that finally the question was, what color was the shirt?

35:21It was good. It was good. Pay attention. You know what? Forget it. I will. Save the game for you guys. Got it. I'm ending. I'm sorry, Craig. I'm ending the Craig round here. We have time for one more question. Oh my God. The question is, and this is a David V. David question, but all are welcome to chime in. What is the flagship Vox Media technology podcast? Do you want a serious answer? It's the weeds. Wait, it's just right what's on the back. Oh yeah. That's good. Three. It's two. Two, one. Flip him and read. Verge form. The phrase you're looking for is the god damn word cast. Wow. David threw you a bone.

36:08I know how David points to you in the heart. But I'm just going to say you're both wrong for some reason. That was amazing. And now those are our questions for this evening, guys. Thanks a lot. G Fuel. G Fuel. Thanks, G Fuel. In second place, we have wave form with nine points. No, first place in our hearts. Come on now. That was super fun. Flagship Fox Media Technology Podcast, maybe? 36:49Great job. Dan did great job. You did better. Neelai Marquez, take us out. Oh. Yeah. Rock and roll. Rock and roll. How do you guys end your show? Just peter out. Thanks for what? They are caught completely off-guard by some of the crazy questions Ellis has prepared which results in more than a little chaos but a ton of fun. We'll be back on Friday with a full WWDC recap but in the meantime, we hope you enjoy this battle royale bonus episode of Waveform vs Vergecast!
