In short
Overcoming overwhelm when you “don’t know where to start” on retirement planning; shifting from researching for certainty to getting clear and taking action.
Guest backgrounds

Key claims
The problem isn’t lack of information but “overwhelmed” from too much information and avoidance; you don’t need the entire plan upfront—clarity leads to action. “Get clear” means understanding where you are now, including what you have. Three starting steps: (1) estimate monthly/yearly cost of your life to sustain in retirement; (2) confirm saving meets at least 10% and aim for 15%; (3) determine how far away retirement is (target date and the gap).
Notable examples
“Cost of reality” framing; “minimum 10%” and “hit at least 15%” thresholds; avoiding action by reading/watching more.

Five to seven minutes. We're going to be talking about I don't know where to start. So if this is you, I would love to have you join me in the Are You On Track to Retire five day event that's happening next week. This will help you put into place all the things you need to know so you can start making actionable steps towards retirement. Head over to elevatefinances.us backslash webinar to get yourself registered and learn more. So you ask yourself the question, where do I even start?
0:47If you're asking yourself, what do I do? How do I get started? what do I need to do first right any way shape or form of that question you don't have a knowledge problem right you don't need more information you are actually in an overwhelmed problem because you have too much information you keep going to search for more information because you think to yourself, I want to see the entire plan laid out in front of me. I need the whole plan. And I'm here to tell you, you don't. This is your mind telling you, I'm looking for certainty that if I take this first step, I will end up at retirement. So you keep looking for certainty and the exact steps that will take you the entire path.
1:46But you don't need more information. You need to get clear, which will then lead into action. So what does get clear mean? I've used the word clarity. It's an understanding. it's, you know, really getting clear and understand where you're at, what is going on, right? Some of you may be thinking, I have absolutely nothing. And I can guarantee you probably 95 % of you are not starting from zero, right? So that's part of getting clear is understanding what do I have, right? You've got to start connecting all of the pieces that you do have, not the other information that you want, but those connecting of the pieces.
2:42So I'm going to give you three steps to start helping you get clear. Do you know how much your life costs, right? If you've been a listener for a while, I've talked about the cost of reality. Do you know how much your life costs vaguely every month? Maybe even into a year. One of those. I know that my life is X amount. That is getting really clear on. Okay, I'm going to need to sustain that in retirement. Number two, am I saving enough every month? Are you meeting the minimum 10 % retirement savings? And if you are, do you have a plan in place to hit at least 15 %? Right? These are some minimums that we should be achieving.
3:39And if you are, okay, great. Now that you know those answers to those first two questions, you need to say, how far away from retirement am I? It comes in two forms. When do I want to retire? And what is the gap, which we talked about in yesterday's mini episode. So instead of looking for certainty, right? Instead of researching and learning more, which is truly just you avoiding taking action, I want you to walk through those action steps I just gave you. Once you start doing that, you're going to shift. You're going to start connecting with what you have and hopefully start seeing where you're going to go.
4:36reading more articles watching more videos instead of taking action is literally some avoidance because you know a lot now we've got to trust ourselves to take at least that first step i've given you three very simple very easy don't get overwhelmed remove all those other pieces. Don't think about anything else. Just really sit with those three first steps. Do I know how much my life costs? Am I saving enough every month with those minimum thresholds? And then determine how far away am I? So the event next week, Are You On Track To Retire? walks you through not only these first steps, but several more.
5:32We're going to connect everything that you have about retirement and create a plan with action steps that you can get moving forward. All you need to do is take one action step. Either ask yourself, how much is my life cost? Or sign yourself up for this event next week. You can do that at elevatefinances.us backslash webinar. I hope you'll join me tomorrow again for another little mini episode where we dive into one of these thoughts that might be holding you back.
