In short

“I’ll deal with it later” as the “meta excuse” that delays retirement progress during the “messy middle” (busy years raising kids, working, managing the household).

Key claims

Later isn’t neutral; it has a cost shown as missed opportunities. Each day and decision affects retirement outcomes, and you can’t “pick up where you left off.” Common thoughts like “I’m behind,” “I started late,” “I don’t know where to start,” and “I don’t make enough money” are framed as results of postponing.

Notable examples

making a small savings adjustment now to get on track; recognizing that decisions today can change whether you can buy a second home without waiting.

Guests

none mentioned; it’s a solo host promoting a free live webinar/training to identify each listener’s smallest next step.

0:00Welcome back to the Wealthy After 40 and the last of the mini series. This is episode 5. So if you've missed any of the episodes 1 through 4, make sure you go give those a listen. But these episodes are going to remain on the podcast. They're great little nuggets to refresh, to remind, to help you break through some of the limiting challenges that you're experiencing and help you view them differently. So I hope you'll come back and use these as well. So today we're diving into the thought of I'll deal with this later. As I say that, I'm sure many of you are like, I have said that, right? It's so easy to do this with a lot of things, especially considering the time of life you are in.

0:52And I recognize that. I have termed it the messy middle, right? I was in it. I did it. You're raising kids. You're working your jobs. You're managing the household. You're getting kids through school and off to college. All of the things. So it is very easy to say, I'll deal with this later. We say it to a lot of things. But this one is kind of the big umbrella of all of the things that we've talked about before today. This is the meta excuse. This is the big excuse. It's very simple to do. It's very simple to think. But I want to challenge you with that thinking. Later isn't neutral. Later has a cost.

1:46And the cost is going to show up as opportunities missed. So some of these opportunities could be an example of making a small adjustment with your savings that will put you on track to retirement. Knowing that yes, you can buy that second home now and not have to wait. It's recognizing that every decision today quietly affects your retirement outcome. And as you think about, I'll deal with it later, and it's not neutral. It's you are not going to be picking up where you left off. This isn't like reading a book. This isn't like crocheting or knitting. It's not like a handmade project where you can come back and pick up where you left off.

2:38It is truly important to recognize that each day and each decision affects our retirement outcome. And we don't know what the outcome is unless we're actively involved. So the episodes we talked about leading up to today, I'm behind, right? I got started late. I don't know where to start. I don't make enough money or I need to get organized are all a result of I'll deal with it later, right? If you have these thoughts first, oh, I don't know where to start. Life is busy and you easily say, I'll deal with it later. You think, oh, I don't make enough money. So when I get that raise, I'll deal with it later.

3:25Right? The result of I'll deal with it later is pushing off opportunities, is pushing off the time where you can make changes. So instead of getting overwhelmed and wanting to easily say, I'll deal with it later, and we do it with many things in life, This is a very easy, what we feel safe way to handle things. But when it comes to retirement, instead of saying, I'll deal with it later, you need to determine what is the smallest possible next step you can do. That is what you need to find. Yes, you are busy. Yes, you have a lot going on. but to take advantage of those opportunities, we've got to figure out what is that next step I can take?

4:18What can I do right now that I know is simple for me to implement, is going to make the difference, is going to help me get to retirement even though I don't feel like I have the time to do this right now? That is what you want to be finding out. in my training at the end of this week, that is exactly what we are doing. We're helping everyone who comes and attends determine what is their next step. And it's you that gets to choose that next step, right? You're going to see with all your numbers, what makes sense. And then you get to choose what works into your life right now. What do I have the time for?

5:00And you can get it implement. But even better, when you have that moment of, you know what, I have a little bit of time, you can come back, find out what is the next step, the next area, and get that implemented. Having a plan to follow is what you truly need. And you might have to just take 60 minutes and join me in getting there. Now, if you don't have 60 minutes on Friday, the replay is going to be available for seven days. Hopefully you'll have 60 minutes in there somewhere.
