In short

The hosts trade stories about humiliating moments and performance anxiety, then pivot to pop-culture and history—especially Rasputin—and end with a chat about Below Deck (including captains and guest dynamics).

Guests

Tom Davis (UK comedian/TV performer; discusses early career panel-show tryouts, anxiety about edits, and heckler experiences; also talks about being on Radio 2 in the Park and a “bat in the cave”/nose-bogey incident). Al and Tom are the main speakers; no other guests appear as interview subjects.

Key claims

Tom says his career often involved being edited down to silence (a joke about being self-deprecating that made no lines in the final cut). He describes Rasputin as a manipulative “scoundrel” who worked his way up to the Tsars. He argues Below Deck follows a repeatable story structure and praises Captain Sandy while finding Captain Jason increasingly “sad” and vulnerable.

Notable examples

A Channel 4 panel-show tryout where he felt like he “didn’t hit” and got edited to nothing; a Walton-on-Thames heckling where he told someone to “shut the fuck up”; Radio 2 in the Park where he discovered a bat/bogey in his nose; Below Deck talk about Nathan’s arrest/warrant and Captain Sandy/Captain Jason.

0:00Romesh Ranganathan:It's time for The Wolf and Al podcast in your ears and eyes and in your soul. In your sensory glands. Yeah, sure.

0:30Romesh Ranganathan:How are you, Tom? Good, brother. Yeah. You're looking good in the double denim. Got the old Canadian tuxedo on. Well, that's how I roll. Yeah. This is my look now. It's, yeah, this is the cowboy. It's autumn, so cowboy Tom is here. Might I take this opportunity to give you a small bouquet of flowers? What for? How you look in the gentleman. Oh, well, okay. Is, it's the most sexy I've ever seen. Really? Yeah. And I've seen you sexy. I think, I worry I was too thin at that point. Do you? yeah yeah i'm happier now yeah you look better now sorry yeah it's the second most sexy i've seen you that's the problem with paying compliments and look compliments can be a burden yeah can't they because if somebody says to you you look really great yeah then you go well they've never said that to me before yeah yeah and now i've got a lot of heavy lifting in them but i was very yeah i've had a lot of anxiety about the fact that those scenes wouldn't make it it's not like you yeah it's my whole life getting the job is the easy part it's then do you think maybe you should trumpet about it less on your Instagram and stuff like I remember like when you were filming you were going oh there's a big dog in town I don't think I think everyone's shocked because I haven't mentioned no you haven't mentioned why would you for that part look at that line sorry mate do you know where Alton Manor is yeah it's just down there on the left you know I did And so years ago, I did, I can't remember what the panel show is called, but it's this Channel 4 panel show.

2:01Romesh Ranganathan:It's when I really, really first started, right? Yeah, yeah. And you know when you get 80 quid to go and turn up to a desk table read through or whatever? Yeah, yeah. Like a test out of the thing. And I think it was Richard Iowarde, David Mitchell, Mickey Flanagan. Wow. They were the regulars on it, right? Those are big hitters. Yeah, big hitters. So I turned up. By the way, you surpassed them all now. Don't say shit like that. No, that's what you say. What? You say a hero is only a hero until I'm stepping on them. Yes. And with apologies to Chris Rock, Chappelle. Richard Pryor. Yeah. But you're coming for them.

2:35Romesh Ranganathan:Sorry, guys. But you're coming for them. There's a new dog in town.

2:42Romesh Ranganathan:No, so I turned up to the read-through. Yeah. Like the tryout. And it just went really well for me, right? Crushed it. I didn't crush it, but it went well. Yeah. So then they obviously had a dropout. And they've obviously been sat down going, shit, we had a last minute dropout. Who should we get? What about that guy that came in and did, because I'd done nothing at that stage. So they go, let's get him in. Soccer Aime? Oh, mate, please. I still get PTSD about Soccer Aime. Yeah, but had you done Soccer Aime? I don't, maybe. Maybe. But I don't think that was, I don't think anybody involved in my career was using it on the old resume.

3:18Romesh Ranganathan:That's the, that's the word. I think what would more frequently happen is, the guy from Soccer Aime? No. the covered guy no don't be so racist that was a different brown comedian that was Ramesh Ranganathan there was nothing wrong about that guy he was hilarious for the first time and then for some reason they brought him out of the cupboard another three times anyway so they phone me and they go can you do it but it was same day so it must have been proper last week dropout but anyway regardless amazing opportunity I'm like of course I go down there and obviously as soon as that so all these big hitters the guests I can't even remember who the guests were and then I walk out to just fucking obviously people are like who the fuck is this right I've had that in not the so distant past yeah I'd be surprised if you had it in the distant future yeah I don't know I think it could still happen no but sometimes I think that's in your head a little bit yeah but this was real yeah so I then walk out and nothing I say is hitting right because not just because I was the least well-known.

4:25Romesh Ranganathan:I was shit. I just sat down. I was like, fucking hell, I'm sitting next to Mickey Flatton. You know, you just completely flip out. So I'm shit, right? What's the show called? I can't remember. I'll have to look it up. Anyway, I do the show, walk out. They're all thanking me, but I think they're thanking me because we've managed to fill the chair. You've got a body. Yeah. I leave and I think, and I'm trying, I'm racking my brains because it was that thing where you say something, it goes shit and then your ass goes and then you build up the courage to say something else by the end of it I was doing stuff from my fucking Club Five trying to trying to trying to crowbar that into the record somehow because I'm so desperate my brain's giving me absolutely nothing to say in the moment so I'm like I know what you're thinking so anyway why are you talking about being a vegan yeah oh mate so bad and um so then the show comes out I didn't watch it but well it was like they told me when it was going to come out so I just said like being self-deprecating if you'd like to see me laughing at other comedians I'm going to be on this tonight right anyway somebody messaged me when it went out going I thought you were joking they literally just I'm silent throughout the whole episode there's nothing I said made the edit you're joking what not one line no so I'm just basically employed to do this can I say you got that was pretty much my whole fucking career on League of Our Own I know I was there for moral like you know what if we've got someone who doesn't feel like Adam Peaty's coming on he's not very funny but you know who will laugh at any joke Tom Davis Tom Davis will make anyone try and feel funny yeah you know what I like about you when you do self-deprecation there's always another casualty so you're being modest about yourself but for no reason completely apropos of nothing Adam Peaty gets one straight in the fucking dick I think I think it's fair to say Adam Peaty's an incredible swimmer but he's not necessarily a raconteur of great stories.

6:20Romesh Ranganathan:Let's just say, he would not on the back of his football shirt have Banter Cannon 1.

6:28Do you know the worst version of that I did? And I hope he doesn't want me to tell it. Just go off instinct, I reckon. Don't bother checking. Yeah, no, it's nothing derogatory. Did you ever do the Alan Carr's movie show? Yeah, something about movies, yeah. So we did that. Tucked into a big old plate of shit on that show. and I think it was the first series maybe but I was on a team I think it was Michael Sheen was one of the captains and Sean Bean was the big guest so you get a week or whatever to go Sean Bean is going to be the guest so you're going to have the run up and nearly all your material basically around Sean Bean and I turned up and Ivo Graham was there who is one of my favorite comedians I think Ivo is genuinely a genius and I was like oh oh yeah and he's like I'm on standby because they're not sure if Sean beats definitely gonna come and I was like what happens if he doesn't like everyone's material is about Sean Bean and Ivo's genuinely one of the funniest comedians on the circuit touring but it's a very big difference from either Graham coming on and working your material around Ivo rather than sure and Sean left it really late so me either was in the makeup chair yeah and going I I don't know how to play this.

7:42Yeah. Like it's a big movie star or it's yeah. I've got him.

7:46Romesh Ranganathan:Can we just take a moment, a moment of silence for the two people that without provocation, got it in the dick in the two minutes that Tom's been speaking. RIP to both Adam Petey and Ivo Graham. For no reason. No, but I, those, those, those shows are scandalously like if you understand, the scandalous, it's a scandal. I had to do it once. I did the start. It was a Greg James one, I think. Yeah. Oh, was it the Roundup thing? No, it was Greg James. No, this was years ago. And the team captains were Pixie Lott, an example. And Joe Lott, I think Joe Lott. Sorry, someone else. Here we go. Joe Lott.

8:26Romesh Ranganathan:You might as well go for a third one. Why see a piece of shit? No, he pulled out on the day off. And I stepped in. And that was, I came into silence. And I struggled to shit out of that. Struggled to shit out of it. Propel Fitness Water. With Gatorade electrolytes, zero sugar, and vitamins, Propel hydrates better than water to help you get the most out of your workout and get back to your best self. What propels you? Propel with Gatorade electrolytes. From athletic stuff like a full-court pickup game, swish, to athletic-ish stuff like a half-mile stroll. Get those steps in. Head to Sierra or Sierra.com for the brands you want at the prices that let you do it all.

9:04From athletic to athletic-ish, Sierra's got it. Yeah. how's laughter in you generally good yeah good I feel good I mean I've had one of those weeks where very busy week yeah but professionally very anxiety a lot of anxiety professionally you know when you feel like you're almost making yourself ill with worry yeah and yeah I've spent most this week just going it's to a point Catherine said to do like a sort of stewards inquiry and it's pulled me up and go like you actually you I can see you're making yourself quite unwell with the level of pressure and anxiety you're putting yourself under.

9:42Romesh Ranganathan:You know, the thing is, and we've said it a lot, the worst thing about this job is that the stuff you do has to be released to the public. Like actually making the stuff and doing the stuff is really good fun. Oh, yeah, yeah. But when you have to, when it's, and that is part of the, that is what the vulnerability is of being a creative, right? Is that you put your stuff out and then it's open to everybody's interpretation. It's also just so fucking shallowly, if it's received very well you almost forget any of the angst that's gone into the worry and then you lulls your tiffles I can't in that regard I can't speak from experience come on you've done some you've made some incredible television and tour shows and your new podcast is phenomenal by the way can I just shout out the Ray Winston episode of the Romesh Ranganathan show you like that it's beautiful I love them all but that one was do you know what I think it's one of the best interviews I've ever seen Ray Given wow He was so chilled.

10:37He was very chilled, actually. I just loved it.

10:40Romesh Ranganathan:A few people suggested that I was scared of him. No. That he intimidated me. I don't think you're scared of fucking anyone. You genuinely carry the hold of a man. I can't imagine being scared of many things. I've seen you in situations where it's got quite testy. And you never struck me as being scared. Pissed off? Yes. Pissed off, yes. Perturbed? Without a doubt. Yeah. Rattled? No. No. I wouldn't say you always feel like disappointed for sure you know what I'm going to go out on one here you're going to go out on one here I'm going to say you would be an incredible person to have in the trenches if you were in the second world war I think Ranganathan to go out first no yeah because I think you'd come back and it would be fucking actually a shit show what side is he on everyone's buying machine guns there's grenades and fucking mines going off and you come down and everyone will go how is it out there Ranganathan and he's oh it's alright actually whether it's alright pick it up it's a bit cloudy yeah just tell me one thing you're not the sniper I am

11:43but I think I think you've got I don't think you have a rattledness about you good captain in a football team apart from your lack of football inability yeah although a lot of people have been messaging me this is something that's annoyed me about the foot golf thing so loads of so Romesh would destroy you at foot golf even with sliders on

12:00Romesh Ranganathan:no no chance are you fucking mad no chance listen I have I've seen you have a little bit of a kickabout. And you've got skills. I can play a little bit. You're better than me. Guys, has anybody seen Robin Romesh versus the Three Lions? Like fucking... I think Declan Rice shouted, you're having a shocker. Declan Rice, one of the nicest... Kindest footballers. One of the nicest people in football. Yeah. Might have been Grealish, which is more in keeping, isn't it? Yeah, Grealish, yeah. Absolute shit. Bam of K... I love Jack Grealish. Yeah, I know you do. Smells a real cream and hope. don't try material out on me on the podcast this is supposed to be loose chat I don't want to hear your fucking openers from the tour I've got 20 minutes on Jack Grealish looking so I assume you guys know Jack Grealish

12:49Romesh Ranganathan:here's a thing fun fact about it he smells of brew cream and hope pause for laugh do you know what would be genius is doing that with your pause for laugh what about those calves what is he a human being or a or a lion famous for having fucking massive calves an elephant rhino I couldn't tell you what an elephant elephants don't look like they've got I mean they have got calves but do you know what I mean yeah elephants have got if you go it looks like an elephant's calf they think that people assume you mean a baby elephant because that's what they're called really yeah so what I'm trying to think of an animal fuck me I feel like sometimes the conversation really spins my brain by the way we got criticised the other day for what one guy really went in about our discussion on soup why he said it was a real low level chat was it yeah I'm so sorry that you were permanently locked into the podcast against your will you fucking mug if you don't like the chat listen to something else you fucking helmet I feel like such I feel like Nelson I feel like Nelson Muntz by the way when you were doing that I just like I really felt it no but I no listen the soup this this podcast varies in quality of course and I it goes from like really shit and occasionally when we're both hydrated and we've had enough sleep it gets mediocre yeah and people accept that it's a rocky old road here on the rocky old road here on the wall for that I don't think it's a rocky road I think I mean if we can get words out properly and by the way sorry can I just say the other thing I could say is we've talked in detail about Tom eating lasagna from my ass crack.

14:31Romesh Ranganathan:Right? Like, we've talked about fucking finishing a piss in your trousers. And that was the fucking breaking point for you. The soup chat. Yeah, the soup chat he got really angry about. That's a shame. In all seriousness, obviously I'm being facetious. People sometimes take me at face value when I do stuff like that. They think I'm a really horrible man. Yeah, but haven't you had, you've had this recently. What do you mean? Well, like gigs and stuff. I was doing, sorry, are you, I feel like I'm on Norton. Are you teeing me up for an anecdote? Yeah, yeah. Sorry, but so. Do you want me to do it like a talk?

15:07Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, yeah, go on, go on, go on. Well, I'll do a little bit before. All right. Because I don't want to, yeah. No, I know why you'll do a little bit before, because you're a fucking attention-seeking little bitch. And what's going to happen is you're going to start being the host and the fucking guest. And I'll sit here like a passenger, like I'm doing about 50 % of the role plays, where you go, okay, you be this person, I'll be this person. And then suddenly three other characters spring out of nowhere and then I'm watching this whole fucking play out in front of me. Anyway, go on. So Bradley, one of my favourite things about your film.

15:36Why am I Bradley? No, Bradley Cooper. Oh, right. Because there's another character. Immediately. No, because that's what I do want to show you. Right, got it. Unless you want to be Bradley Cooper. No. Are you sure? Yeah. Okay. So Bradley, one of my favourite things about your film is the nuance that you show and the indifference that you look. Jesus Christ.

15:58the indifference that you look upon the world in the partly pain

16:02Romesh Ranganathan:the indifference that you look upon the world so even if I was on the cat I'd say sorry sorry Tom could I just ask what who are you Graham sorry Graham yes I'm just going to speak on behalf of Bradley I don't think either of us know what that question is are you okay pardon are you okay this is Bradley now are you okay everything alright yeah The question was directed at me. Okay, sorry, Rowan. Go ahead. Sorry, what were you saying, Rowan? So do tell us about the indifference that you look at. Yeah, so good luck. It's such a flippant and disregarding way of looking upon things, but it's so amusing.

16:36Actually, someone else who makes a lot of people laugh is the man to your left, Romesh Ranganathan. Now, Romesh, people take you as being a little bit curt at times, and you've had a recent couple of run-ins with people, which the research team here found hilarious when you told them.

16:55Romesh Ranganathan:Graham, interesting choice to involve the research team in the question. Can I first say that? Not many chat show hosts let people behind the curtain in that manner, but thank you. Yeah, I was doing a gig at Walton on Tam. Oh, man, I know Walton on Tam, sir. Bradley, please, let Robert show this moment.

17:19Romesh Ranganathan:so I was doing a show at Walton on Thames and basically I was very early on in the show and are you okay? yeah no sorry I had a candy cane that was half chewed it was on the side of my mouth and I just wanted it okay will that all stay in? we will probably cut around that you did it again you alright? yeah I'll have some in a minute they told me it sounded like it would be quick because obviously we've got to get back to Brad. I mean, I've literally, I've said half a sentence. Yeah, well, you need to get back to Brad because he's the main guest. Well, your PR team insisted on you being on. I'm happy for you to go back.

17:59Romesh Ranganathan:Are you okay? That's three times now. So do you want to finish your... Not really, no. Okay, so you're... I'll lead you in. So you're on Wharton on Thames. Have you just done an offstage note? We're on... So you're on Wharton on Thames. and I imagine at the BBC when they watch this they'll be thinking oh my god you know Claudia stopped I've got some great news watch this guy in action so so you're on water non-tems yes and so this hilarious thing happened it wasn't hilarious actually okay so basically what happened was is that I was quite early I was quite early on in the show are you sure you're right I think I don't mind stopping do you want to have a bit your tea I'll have some in a minute Okay.

18:44Romesh Ranganathan:So I'm in the middle. I'm quite early on in the show. Oh, God. Really? I'm sorry. They'll cut away from me for some parts of this. Okay. But you don't have to make any noise at all, do you? Yeah. So, and I'm in the middle of a bit and somebody shouted something. Oh, man. Heckless. I did a movie, actually, about standard comedy, about your friend, John Bishop, his life with Will Arnett. Not my friend. And heckless. God. They sound terrible. What happened, bro? Well, it's - By the way, Bradley, that's very good of you to let Romesh encourage him in such a way. He's a little bit more inexperienced than you.

19:17That was really nice. Thank you, Bradley. I like it nice when everyone gets on.

19:22Romesh Ranganathan:Is the patronising a new feature of the show? No, we've always done it behind the scenes. Right, right, right. Anyway, somebody heckled and I was too harsh on them. I told them to shut the fuck up. Well, I think we kind of want to know, what did you say? Shut the fuck up, you c***.

19:45Bradley

19:48when you made hangover

19:52Romesh Ranganathan:that pause was so good yeah no I had a heckler the other night and I went I basically what happened was I walked out you're doing work in progress I put my notebook on the thing and then I start doing the thing and about 10 minutes in and I say something and I do a pause and somebody shout So, you know, this build up of tension. I know I'm making it sound more complicated than it is. Like, I think it's... Anyway, you build up a bit of tension, and then this guy punctures it by shouting something out. And so it's so early on in the show, then I think to myself, well, I could deal with this, like, and be funny about it.

20:27Romesh Ranganathan:In a couple of weeks. But then everybody... It's quite an intimate room. Then I think I'm going to spend the whole time fielding. So when I started teaching, somebody said to me, this old school teacher, I think I've told you this. he said if you want the cast to behave he goes early on if somebody does anything you just absolutely go for them that's called the napoleon mood is that right napoleon bonaparte the old thanks for giving me the surname i was thinking which of the napoleons because i i thought it was the napoleon dynamite yeah well yeah but it's like it's bonaparte okay he did a thing where he would pick out one of his squadron and he'd absolutely fuck it like they'd do something like they'd drop their rifle or sword or whatever and he'd absolutely smash them to bits.

21:10So he was the originator of that whole...

21:12Romesh Ranganathan:I don't know. Sometimes I don't know if you're a real person. What do you mean? Well, because the same person that uses amicable instead of admirable has just given me a fact about Napoleon Bonaparte. You're an enigma wrapped up in a puzzle. History I quite enjoy. Spelling and words I think are fucking bullshit. What's your favourite period from history? Probably Rasputin. Rasputin? What about Rasputin? I think that time with the Tsars and Rasputin was fascinating. Yeah, why do you find that so interesting? Well, I think he was just a very interesting sort of Machiavellian character within the history and the sort of use of power.

21:47Romesh Ranganathan:Have you thought about doing a history podcast? There's no big ones out there at the moment. There's very successful ones. I'd love it if you were a guest on the rest of his history. Oh, my God, can you imagine? And, Tom, you've come in to talk about... Rasputin. Rasputin, yeah. so if you could just give us we obviously started setting the scene for what was going on over there but could you just give us your kind of if you were to give us a hot take on raspy oh god what a piece of work a little scoundrel mate um he was a bit like an old sort of skank like a sort of smelly skank like a vagrant right like sort of smelt a bit and stuff but he was also very manipulative and could get into people's ears and he worked his way up he started on like i think working on pub landlords and police people and then sort of slowly worked up until he was working for the Tsars, who would like the royal family at that time, if you didn't know, of Russia.

22:40Romesh Ranganathan:Where is it that it talks about, where did you find the stuff about him working on pub landlords early on? Well, a lot of that's just naysayers and... Sorry, go on. That's just a lot of hearsay. If you could just do the maths and just work around it. Do the maths? Well, yeah, you've got to say that you don't, you know, your first tory kicker ball wasn't in the Premier League you know you run the marshes before you do that mate so that's that's not anything even manipulation so he tried it out on other people with his manipulative ways do you know he'd never cut his hair or his fingernails or his toenails is that right yep 100 % right great well thank you so much Tom for coming on The Rest is History look forward to seeing you Tom will also be on The Rest is Entertainment and The Rest is Science so make sure you check about on those two Yep, and I'll be talking about exactly the same thing.

23:31Romesh Ranganathan:Rasputin. Propel Fitness Water. What, worse than a heckler? Yeah.

24:10Romesh Ranganathan:Oh, wow. Okay. Not horrible. When I say horrible, that sounds like it was a real ordeal. But it was a sort of ordeal, but a light-hearted one. So I went to do Radio 2 in the park. I saw you leaping about on stage. Embarrassing, isn't it? Eh. That means yes, doesn't it? Look, do you want me to be... Yeah, sure. it's a version of you that I find delightful it's a thing of everything you do online it's a bit that I know forced enjoyment is very much something I know that you've had to watch someone else, Jeremy Vine maybe

24:45faux fun and then someone's gone well you've really got to give it, they're pumped up and they're waiting for you mate, so you've had to go out and jump around and you've really got to throw yourself into it, because you haven't got an option you can't, because my I'll be candid you doing this is my favourite version of you it makes me laugh I still, after all the years we've been friends still think it's almost like I don't know, you're like a good footballer you're coming at me, we train every day together right you're a bit like, I'm probably Gabriel you're Odegaard, I still don't know if you're going to go with your right or left when you drop a shoulder I still think this guy's got everything in his locker so it's something, because I think that's how brilliant I think you are, so when I see you having to sprint onto stage and go, ladies and gentlemen hey, hey I still find something so beautiful.

25:30It's like when it takes me back to the Bacardi Breezer outfit. Anyway, it was a lot, a lot of fun. Bopping about on your toes.

25:41Romesh Ranganathan:I was doing the... The main stage? No, I wasn't doing the main stage. You were doing the main stage? No. But before that... What was the main stage? Simple Minds. Deacon Blue. Wow. Level 42. I love level 42. They're amazing. I love Simple Minds. Yeah. Deacon Blair. Anyway, point is, I do a three-hour radio show from Radio 2 in the Park with Sarah Cox. Lovely Sarah Cox. Amazing. Loves the Wolf and Owl, by the way. We love Sarah Cox. By the way, can I say Sarah Cox manages to walk the line where she's not bouncing about on stage for fun. She does it with a sort of air of dignity. Well, I like, I'm very happy for you to go in two-footed on me.

26:22Romesh Ranganathan:the only thing I would say as a counter to that is me bouncing up and down to jump around is exactly what me and Martin do when we're doing Latchit or something like that so for you to insinuate in the way that I think you are I watched that with the sound on that I'm selling myself out no can I say I watched that with that sound on so in my head it was steps or it was reach for the skies jump around is my favourite underground hip hop tune it's a beautiful dream no I'm joking anyway we're doing we do the first hour and a half with Sarah sat in the studio waving at people outside. Appleton come in.

26:54Romesh Ranganathan:Right? We do an interview with them. The Appleton sisters? Yeah. What's that what they called that? Is that a bad call? Appleton, yeah. Wow. Do an interview with them. We then cross over to... How do they get on with the other members of All Saints now? Well, if you want to know, not at all. Oh, they don't get on? No. Oh, sad. We then throw across the Teacan Blue. Yeah. I go, I'm just going to nip to the toilet. Oh, no. Open the toilet door. I've got the biggest bat in the cave I've ever seen in the history of bats in the cave. and I've had that and I've got no idea how long that has been nesting so what the apple so then what happens is immediately you know obviously I get rid of it and then I pick or blow I grabbed a tissue and okay and then I'm thinking back to how many social interactions I've had since I'm last certain I didn't have a bat in the cave so where did you do quite a long time I've been sitting there for two and a half hours oh my god horrible isn't it and you're not a big mirror looker are you i'm not when i'm on the radio no no no no but i mean like you're generally no yeah you're not like checking yourself out no you're not vain no that's bad isn't it do you think coxie or someone saw it the only assumption i made is that everyone saw it and i assume that when i think by the way i think sarah cox if she'd seen it she'll tell you i think i went to the toilet i went i think i went to the toilet and they all went fuck you know hopefully hopefully i'll get rid of that.

28:17Romesh Ranganathan:Bogey's coming back, bogey's hanging out. Could you even, could you even focus in the chat because of that fucking thing swinging like a pendulum around us. We just said we hated the rest of All Saints because all we could concentrate is that fucking bogey hanging out of his, the booger. Can I say, Grace has got a new habit of wiping her bogeys on things. Oh no. We're like, we've been out recently, she's, we're at the Natural History Museum and I'm watching her like a man marker in a football game making she just like wipe a bogey on some. Does it make you angry that she's obviously I don't you know I don't know people know but she obviously picked that up from Katherine does that do you find that annoying yeah I mean because Catherine yeah Catherine's a beautiful woman but that's one yeah hindrance is she's always picking a nose her nickname at school was K boogie wasn't it the book my stuff yeah so did you get back and say anything by the way can I say I did something about that I saw a friend of mine we're all down the street friend of mine and Katherine's and she has something like a smear on her face I saw her, I said hello and then I went, well there's something she was popping into Gales to meet Catherine and I said, oh there's a schismar on your face and I got rid of it.

29:24You got rid of it? Yeah. She said, oh thank you. And I was genuinely, I felt like I wasn't going to say anything because I know her well but I was like, is this, but then I thought if she walks in and sees someone else she knows and that's there then it will, she'll go why didn't you just say?

29:38Romesh Ranganathan:So do you think, did no one say oh you got rid of that bogey? No. I debated, here's a question for you would you have said something when you went back into the studio I'd have gone oh well I think thanks everyone for the but not tell me about putting great bogey hanging out my nose okay what bogey go this guy this guy how you're great at doing that by the way doing what you you've told me a few times you've gone yeah you picked it up and said mmm and that time at the King Gary rap party when you're getting a bit handsy I don't know yeah I said Tom and apologies I shouldn't have touched Simon Day he didn't mind it though he always had a bogey hanging out of his nose yeah but now I'm thinking that's probably the only time I'll ever talk to Appleton so a hundred percent of the time that I've spoken to Appleton I've had a big no I think I don't know what they sing him well they got their own new songs yeah yeah and yeah I think brought a new EP what sort of music is it kind of like all saints are they for Did they sing that one?

30:41Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. All Saints. I'm amazed that this is the thing that you're doing the biggest deep dive on out of this story that I'm telling you. Why? Well, I'm telling you about this bogey bat in the cave thing and you're just fucking fascinated about Appleton. I've not thought about that. Do they get on with the rest of the band? What kind of music are they doing? Have they got new stuff coming out? What the fuck's going on? I was like the Appleton sisters. Yeah, fine. Fucking do a Google afterwards. Why when your best friend's just chatted to them? That's literally like... Well, they won't speak to me again.

31:10And I bet they... By the way, rumours like that spread amongst... 100%. Yeah.

31:14Romesh Ranganathan:100%. What was that? 100%. That would lean into your whole hygiene. Oh, God. Why did you have such a big bogey? Why did I have such a big bogey? Do you know what? I was travelling up to Scotland and I thought, wouldn't it be cool if for the first half of the show, I had a big bogey? What the fuck do you think? Have you had a cold? I didn't think I had a cold, but... Was it dry, crusty, or was it heavyweight? Please, mate, this is making the soup seem like a creative high point for us. You're asking for the level of fucking humidity in the booger. No, no. Dry. Yeah, there we go. That's plain. That's a plain bogey.

31:52Romesh Ranganathan:Okay. Anyway, I found it sent me into a mini spiral. Okay. And then how was Coxie when you got back and you blown your nose? Coxie was a delight the whole way through. Yeah, of course. She's a class. She's probably worked with people, bogeys hanging out of her nose all the time. I know, but I don't want to be one of those people. And I was on Saturday. Have you ever gigged when you know you can feel the bogeys in your nose and then you want to pick it? Yeah. You can't pick your nose. I had a thing where I was on stage and a woman was like, if you imagine I'm stood up there, a woman was just like this, like that for the first, and I'm just thinking, well, this looks like, I'm looking down, I can't see anything.

32:32Romesh Ranganathan:Your fly's undone. Yeah, my fly's undone. or is this weird or is my t-shirt too tight or whatever. And then eventually I had to stop the show. I went, sorry, you keep looking over here and looking concerned. What's it doing? She goes, your shoelaces are sort of undone and I'm worried that you're going to fall over. Wow. And I was like... See, that's on her to be so obsessed with your shoelaces. I mean, that's the sort of thing I'd probably do, but so obsessed with your shoelaces. Well, she was sat in the front row so I guess my foot's just like... I had a bad one recently where I was so excited.

33:03and you know when I get into a joke bit and I was really like

33:07Romesh Ranganathan:and yeah because you do I don't know if people that haven't seen you until they don't know this but when you're about to do a joke you sort of go you get really excited the worst thing is that yeah I wish that was a joke no but when I get and some spittle came out yeah and I followed the spit for the corner of my eye and it landed on this guy's face and I was like oh no and he genuinely went and then he tried to sort of pretend it didn't happen and I sort of carried on for a matter of how big a bit of spit are we talking like a decent like a decent size I could see it in the dark viscosity what do you mean what's that mean how liquidy was it oh no it was phlegmy I get quite a dry mouth when I'm on stage so yeah it was sort of it wasn't yeah it was like it's probably spit look I don't like fucking get a loogie together now I was going to show you don't fucking show me are you serious yeah that's why Jesus Christ man are you being serious is that what you're about to do do not do that man what's wrong with you that's what I thought you were after no I just to be honest with you I was just asking a question as a kind of call back to what you said about the bogey I don't want I certainly didn't want you to fucking hock one up onto your tongue and show me you mad sorry that's what I thought we were at Jesus Christ yeah I just thought instead of trying to explain show me after right and it hit him but he was so polite he didn't want to say yeah he didn't like that and then I sort of carried on for a moment I mean, and I talked to a man and I said, yeah, did that spit hit you?

34:36And he went, yep, yeah. I went, I'm so sorry. Did he say yep like that? Yeah. That's bad, man. Yeah. That's bad. He would have gone away worrying, wouldn't he?

34:43Romesh Ranganathan:Because some people are like proper germaphobes. Yeah. I mean, if you're a germaphobe, I'd say don't sit in the front three rows of Tom Davis. If you go and see Tom, it's like SeaWorld. Where were those ponchos? It's a splash zone. We should actually do it. I should sell those ponchos as merch before the show. That's a great idea. That would be a fucking cool idea. You might get done and get gobbed on by the Tom. get a dinner shot the front spud yeah that's a good idea yeah I was accidentally I accidentally was cool actually on the way to Scotland well what happened something calling sexual call I'm shouldn't open the story I keep having immediate regrets and for the way I say stuff accidentally calls good right if if it was accident no but I think you're very cool anyway thanks but I had like a thing where so normally when i'm traveling yeah if i'm going abroad i get a bit funky about turning up to the airport on like early yeah yeah yeah i turn up probably too early is the truth yeah i think that's not a bad thing that's not bad no but then you're just then it's like by the way airports there's lots to do yeah sure if you're rich like you go to all the shops

35:52yeah i could spend an hour and a half in sunglasses yeah no is it is it hard being on the breadline

35:56Romesh Ranganathan:Mr. In the Gentleman and Reluctant Vampire and on tour. Is it difficult? Yeah. Making ends meet? Mr. Sauna in the Garden? Is it tricky? We've got lots too. We've got in the garden at the moment squirrels running amok. Mate, there's so many grey squirrels. Mate, they've become so brazen. Stop the boats. There's so many of them. And they're immigrants. Are they? Children of immigration. What, grey squirrels? Grey squirrels, yeah. What is our natural squirrels? Do you know what? The red squirrel. The red squirrel. And the red squirrel, you know what they didn't do? They didn't fucking protest at the hotels.

36:31Romesh Ranganathan:They didn't paint the roundabouts. And now look at them. They've been fucking taken over by the grey squirrel population. When's the last time you saw a red squirrel, my friend? I can't even remember. Exactly. And that's what's happening in this country. No, but that's true. Grey squirrels are North American. They're so brazen. They come up to the window now and just stare in like, what are you up to? Dumped as a knock. Are you joking? Yeah. Oh, okay. so go you're accidentally cool oh so is this involving air hostess no okay um but i uh i was flying with easy jack okay um to edinburgh nice to go to my flight so my flight is at 7 45 in the morning correct cool from gatwick yeah so that's great news for me great because i live 10 minutes away so you can what time are you getting there well that's the question i was gonna ask no no i know if i'm you what are you going for the day you're flying back there back in the day yeah so what time would you get to the air that's what time you'd get there yeah okay so that's what time i got there that's cool i got there at 6 50 carry on only carry on only yeah i go through yeah get through to uh departure to the air side yeah look on the screen head to gate gate closing Nice.

37:47That is a fucking cool move.

37:49Romesh Ranganathan:I walk to the thing. I get to the counter. She says to me, everyone else is on the plane. Oh, my God. I'm the last one on. Not trying to be cool. Not leaving for the last minute. By the way, I always think that's not as cool as you think it is. No. Because when you get on in your last one, everyone's like, oh, here he comes. No, don't get me wrong. Everyone's pissed off. No, no. But it's more like, oh, okay. What do you mean, oh, okay? Big noises. Yeah. Like you've waited. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So let's know when everyone else is on. Give me a little treat. A ranger man walking up the aisle. Hey, buddy, you all right?

38:22Enjoy Edinburgh.

38:24Romesh Ranganathan:You are like, what is it you're like? You're like the great restorer of balance, aren't you? Because I'm almost certain that if I'd have told you this story and I'd have gone, fuck, man. So I just like, I underestimated how much before the flight had to go on. um well I just thought it's like it's an it's not you know it's just I'm just flying to Scotland domestic flight yeah so I've turned up at 6.45 I thought that's decent time an hour before the flight you shouldn't be ashamed I go through and then suddenly it says gate closing what so I'm just like shit do you know what I mean I don't want to miss this so I'm stressed out so I'm like hammering it through the terminal I get to the gate everyone's on the plane oh mate she goes to me everyone's on the plane so I walk on and I'm just like it's just embarrassing man because also hey listen to me you are enough you are enough alright don't you dare think you're less than enough okay everyone on that plane would have looked and gone oh poor sod I'm glad it wasn't me you know someone had to be last wrong and yeah it was you yeah but what if it had been Alan Turner or Vivian Clarke or I don't know someone had to be the last person let me just say this actually for everyone who's listening to this someone's going to be the last person on every plane and let's just give them the benefit of the doubt that is such a good point someone's going to be the last person on every bus there'll be a last person to leave every pub tonight there'll be one last person to go in the cafe just before it closes and go can I have a cup of tea Bernie we're bloody closing mate someone's got to be last yeah thanks man but in all seriousness I know you were doing that as a piss take but that's what you would have done yeah so you just go because you were so cocky about it I said I was accidentally cool yeah yeah but no no I refute that and in fact I pushed back on it okay push back if I'd have gone mate just fucking rocked up 6.45 don't give a shit last one on the plane fucking eat a dick then I deserve a battering for that yeah I was accidentally cool yeah but also I can't sit there and go like that because also for me that's actually cool but I'm going my brain takes me to where the people what the other people are thinking and other people I've been by the way last one on the plane and people look at you like that's why we're waiting yeah it's not why they're waiting no no no you're still there on time any interesting characters you have any chat no it's actually quite a quite an empty flight but a guy because it was so empty a guy did this what the look what look yeah when someone looks at you just go and you know they're going to make conversation no that didn't happen but a guy from the back of the plane yeah wanted to sit at the front so he walked up to the front yeah sat in front I was in row two he sat in front of me plane's so empty bro yeah sits in front of me moves the seat back wow and starts like shoving it back and I thought this fucking guy both the seats next to me are empty so fucking sit in the middle one helmet wow I didn't say that I just took it and then you didn't say anything no and then one of the cabin crew came over and said is this your seat and he said no and then they said you've got to sit in your seat I don't know why that is why is that did you rat did I rat did you wheezer that and go no I was asleep did you do this

42:04no

42:06Romesh Ranganathan:No. No. Like, you're making it like that's a rat move. The truth is, I'm too scared to do something like that. So you sleep on a plane like no one else. You and your brother are unbelievable plane sleepers. I've never known anything like your brother. Sleeping on a plane is easy, isn't it? Not. You two just get on a plane. I had a great podcast on, though. What podcast? Oh, I can't remember what it's called. That's a shame. It's about the guy from The Bachelor. Oh, really? And the whole thing around that. Have you been watching, like, you've been watching Blow Deck? Yeah. I've not been watching Mediterranean, because I'm waiting for all of the episodes to come out before I watch them.

42:41Romesh Ranganathan:Okay. It's very weird watching a Mediterranean ship, because I texted you about Nathan the other day. Yeah, he's been arrested. Has he been arrested? Oh, no, sorry, there's a warrant for his arrest. Yeah, it's very hard to watch that. And he's not a particularly nice character, Nathan. I find it, I'm addicted to that programme. But it follows the same story every series. This, yeah, it does. this podcast could so easily be a below deck podcast yeah i'm currently watching three different series simultaneously all right wow i'm flitting sweet lease so two of them i'm watching with sweet lease one of them i'm watching solo so i'm watching the second i think it's the second season of below deck sailing yacht i found it really i couldn't take to that sailing yacht is the problem is it's so clusterfavorite that boat and also it just annoys me that they have to sail yeah do you know I mean and also he's quite a little in the captain in the first one yeah yeah I see what you mean well it's just a different vibe yeah I love Captain Sandy love Captain Sandy love Captain Sandy to be my friend really I adore Captain Sandy I kept Sandy's everything that's right in humanity what do you think about Captain Jason I like Captain Jason I would say that he had his best his greatest hits early on right I actually feel like there's a sadness in him why do you think not like as a series go on I think there's a there's a sadness where I just at first you know what at first he's very much he's got kind of cool vibe to him and you think like yeah arm and your shoulder tell you could be amazing you wouldn't want to let him down as sort of a deckhand and then as time goes on I'm like you'd be on the deck going everything right Jace and I think he's ready to go not really mmm yeah I'm struggling here mate yeah why don't you do a little thing down the camera yeah for Captain Sandy because I want to do one for Captain Jason okay what about how much I adore her yeah and you want to be friends maybe just reach out hey Captain Sandy good shit can I call you Sandy well I think you're pretty incredible you're pretty amazing it's the same we've never met but the footprint in which you've left upon my brain and my DNA is incredible every time I'm down or I'm lost I think what will captain Sandy say what she do I find myself sailing on higher seas than I once was and by that I don't mean higher seas as in there's a storm it's like the storm has passed and the calmer seas we've laid down anchor I'm pretty sold that's quite an amazing thing for a person that you've never met to do so captain sandy if you ever want me to come aboard and be a part of the merry ship friendship I'll be honored thank you captain sandy really nice my main takeaway from that is I'm not sure you fully understand what DNA is captain Jason I'm in love with you I'd love to chat with you have a drink with you even spoon you.

45:45Romesh Ranganathan:Wow. Please, please, if you ever watch this, get in touch. Hit me up on Insta. I'd love to be buddies. Do you know, I think Captain Jason is, I think you see him as the alpha that you think. You think I'm putting him on a pedestal, don't you? Because I actually think the beautiful thing of Captain Jason is I think actually he's more vulnerable than. That's what I mean, but that's what I like about him. He's actually an empath. Yeah. Big empath. The only thing I sometimes think there's a few characters in which I'm like I pulled the wall over should have clamped down on that a bit yeah Sandy's vulnerable as well yeah very vulnerable Sandy's very vulnerable anyway I imagine if you don't watch Below Deck the last few minutes of this has been absolutely inaccessible to you why would you not watch Below Deck yeah if you're some sort of fucking idiot do you would I know we've talked about this before how much would you love because someone reached out to us before and said if you ever wanted to come and look around one of the boats someone reached out to me and said you're a mom nobody reached out to me to say that They said if you ever want to come and look right.

46:45Are you winding me up? I swear. And then I lost that DM. Good. Well done. Yeah.

46:51Romesh Ranganathan:I looked up how much it costs to be a one of those. Do they pay you? So the guests pay you? I don't. I think it's half price. Okay. If you do it on below debt. Would you do that? No, because it's like 200 grand for three days or something. What? Yeah. Okay. Yeah. If they did you a free one, then you'd have to be you and Lisa and the kids. But you have to be. No, I wouldn't go on with Lisa and the kids. I know why why you want to be one of those party guys yeah you might choose Rob Persie grats no but I'm just saying I don't want to do a thing with Lisa and the kids Lisa wouldn't want to do it either but I'd love to like if a few of us went on a I'd fucking love that Becky and Josh yeah well Becky wouldn't do it Josh wouldn't do it either probably what about John would you come John yeah I'd come maybe we do like Wolf and Al Wolf and Al Wolf and Al below deck yeah the crossover I don't listen listen, Tom, bless you.

47:45Romesh Ranganathan:I don't think Below Deck is itching for a Wolf and Al crossover. I think they'll just name us as some guests on the boat. Right. I don't think... What do you expect? Okay, preference sheet meeting. So, really... By the way, you'd be the worst preference sheet guy. Why? Well, you're a vegan, aren't you? They love cooking big dishes. How's that the worst? They've got people there that fucking don't want anything beginning with B in their food. Yeah, I suppose. No, out of our group, you'd be the one. Yeah. This guy, have you seen a vegan? apparently he's a big comedian back in England I love this guy, he's so funny the good news is though, one of them is such a fucking animal if you just clean out one of the bathrooms, put it in a bowl he'll eat it he's the producer of the show nice, come on

48:29Romesh Ranganathan:ok, Tom it's about that time bro I'm going to give you three ingredients I'd love you to take us out I forgot we were doing this now, it makes me a lot happy do you not want to do it? no, I'd much rather do it because I've got nothing left ok, first ingredient is a bogey Okay. Second ingredient is below deck. Okay. Third ingredient is Rasputin. Okay. Okay, good luck. Set your limits. What is the expectation? Where are you heading? How does this unfold, friend? See, one minute life can deal you a raw flush. You've got it all going on. You think you're the king. You're out there on the high seas.

49:13Yacht. Yeah, another cocktail please, Vanessa. Living the life. Like below deck, I guess. Before you know it, things can unravel. A little bit like Rasputin. You think you've got all the world at your feet. You think you own it all. You make a couple of bad decisions. And before you know it, you're nothing but a bogey on a handkerchief someone's staring at going, get rid of this please and that's why in life it's worth remembering the happy times sitting there cocktail in hand looking at the sea being nice to those around you because at some point it's invariable friend that slide will be when you're coming down and it won't be with a camera like on below deck where you're going yeah you'll be going oh i wish i'd enjoyed this more enjoy the highs know the lows are coming but always remember this at some point if you're lucky there'll be a steady sea that you'll find your ship sailing on

50:16Romesh Ranganathan:really nice thank you yeah I mean Rasputin and below deck I felt like you folded in yeah whether you're a bit like below deck or you're a bit like Rasputin or you feel more like a bogey well done mate you smashed all three of those out pretty quickly yeah thank you so much for listening to thanks friends and watching the Wolf and Our Podcast if you'd like to be on an email episode you can email wolfoutpod.gmo.com yeah please send them in and remember to check out John's OnlyFans big tit John he is let's just say he's gone further than he's ever gone before that's Johnny the Magpie on OnlyFans we'll see you next time remember to like and subscribe bye Bye.
