In short

The Wolf and Owl Podcast episode mixes holiday plans, a disastrous first outing with a new bread knife, and stories about comedy careers and gigging. It also includes banter about sex nicknames, hydration at theme parks, and AI posters.

Guests

No external guests are interviewed in the transcript. The hosts are Romesh Ranganathan and Ethan (often referred to as “Tom” in the dialogue), plus recurring mentions of partners (Catherine, Lisa) and friends.

0:00Okay, we're ready. What have we got here? What's that? That's for the email special. Okay, okay. All right, sweet. Hope, hope, hope you're fine. Hope, hope, hope you're fine. Hope, hope, hope you're fine.

0:19Yo. Yo, what do you want? Beak or jaws? Feathers or fur? Sharp teeth or feet with claws? Whatever's preferred. Just kidding. Every word in this song is about two grown men. dressed up as a bird and a dog. Welcome to the Wolf and Owl Podcast. Once again, once again. I've been your drill. I feel like my posture's a bit... Your posture's been really good recently. Do you think so? Yeah, yeah. Are you sitting... Yeah, you've got to sit through your... I'm trying to sit, yeah. Through your hips. Yeah, I sit through my coccyx. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Coccyx? You used to be a grade-A slumper. I did, actually.

0:55Yeah, no, no, yeah. I used to see you sitting, and you were always like... No, you're like... hello I'm Romish Rangan Ethan do you know what I think is a sign of true friendship what is knowing that and never correcting a friend and then after they've made steps themselves to ridicule what they've done all these years what a supportive guy you are no I'm saying yeah I'm supporting you now like your lower back I've gone I'm trying to change sitting good job you did because ever since I've known you you've sat like a **** no I didn't say you used to look so content I'm basically summarising boiling it down you used to sit like that and you used to look the happiest I'd see you you're like that yeah and you take little photos when I didn't know and post them on Instagram I got a really good one of you when we did that that read through I remember the photo it's horrible can you just delete it no it's more when I look you've come so far and when I look at that picture I'm like that's who he used to be and I loved him even more that's when the King Gary bullying started that was even on King Gary by the way it was King Gary it wasn't the best picture I ever got of you was on the Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer show you sat like that Your legs couldn't be really mansplaining.

2:00Oh, yeah, and then you pixelated. Isn't that the one where you pixelated so you looked like my dick was out? Yeah, yeah. Fond memories. Fond memories. TV's changed. There's less bullying now. Oh, it's still there if you look around enough. Yeah, if you look hard enough. But that's pranking. That's just having a gentle job. I went like that to you, and you laughed. You went, you bloody nutter. No, I don't think I did. I think I laughed in the moment, because often victims will laugh. to try and just move it on. And then later on, I said to Lisa, it's horrible. And Lisa went, what is it? And you went, oh, he took a picture and pretended to have me willy out.

2:37And she was like, probably did have your willy out if I know you. Anyway, nice to see you again. I love the idea what Lisa said. Probably bloody did have your willy out if I know you, Romsky. Can I ask you a question? Quite a personal question. Do you and Catherine have a nickname for sex? Not really. Do you ever suggest it? Well, like doing it or something. Yeah, I guess. Is that what you call it? No, no, no, no, no. I think we just call it sex, yeah. We don't make a plan. It just happens. I don't think it's sort of something that we go... We're very much in planning stages. So you'd be like, Hey, Leisha, do you want to do a little bit of ziggas-ziggah later?

3:20Hmm. That's exactly... That's what we call it. Or you text it? No. Occasionally I have texts, yeah. What, like you're booking an appointment? Not like you're booking an appointment, but... Like, but... I sort of regret bringing this up now, to be honest with you. But what would you be like? Hey, hey, Fazbaz. It's your sexual soldier here. Would you like to make some Ziggazaga later? What, is your infatuation with Ziggazaga? I don't know. I was listening to a bit of Spice Girls. Yeah. No, I was just wondering if I was interested. Are you making those appointments? So you and Catherine, all of your sex is spontaneous?

4:03No, I don't text her going, if I'm going to, I don't know if I've ever texted her and gone, do you fancy having sex later? Or calling her and going, I've just looked actually. They've cancelled Coronation Street this evening. Sex, maybe? I don't think that's a sort of... I mean, you're taking the piss, it's not that far from the sort of thing I do. Really? I won't say Coronation Street's cancelled. Well, it never cancelled. Because there's other stuff to watch. Yeah. But I might go... I might go... Oh, we've not... We've not... We've not done it recently. Done it for a while, have we? Then do you do like that emoji with the wink and the tongue out?

4:43I do aubergine and then... That one. And then that one. Those three. Then she knows it's on. Like Donkey Kong. The salute. Yeah. Late night bites with friends, already hard to beat. That first too hot bite of fries you couldn't wait for, followed by ice cold Pepsi. Now that hits different. Suddenly, the energy kicks back in. The night goes longer. And the laughs don't stop. Tom let's can we I hope you don't mind I'd like to open you up if I might you because you have had yeah a barbaric and I think it's well I don't think I can take the crux of no but you as a family have had a challenging week yes so can you talk us through it please so uh Sunday night uh have my parents over um sounds horrible I brought some uh I brought some new Japanese knives just for cutting stuff.

6:24Genuinely, for cutting stuff? Yeah, just for cutting stuff. Okay, cool. So, can I just ask some detail because I am in the knife market actually for shanking stuff. Mate, can I say? Well, look, hear the story out because all that glistens is not gold. You bought gold knives? No, not gold knives. I'm that guy. But these are beautiful knives. They're very sharp. Yeah. How did you source them? On the internet, did a little bit of Googling, a little bit of looking. Expensive? No, no, no, not too chumpy. I didn't go crazy. Didn't go too mad, but beautiful knives. Did you get a sharpener with them? Yep.

7:05Yeah, great sharpener. Do the thing on it. Really excited because the bread knife was the thing I was kind of most excited about. How come? Because that's your everyday knife. How's it going to work? is it going to be up to getting through a really, really big bit of sourdough? So I brought a big bit of sourdough and said, let's test you. Got the sourdough. So you're sort of letting the tail wag the dog there a bit. Yeah, yeah. You're buying bread for the knife now. Yes. Well, yeah, just to say, because there's no point testing it on an old soft bit of tiger bread. No, sure. You might as well get something.

7:37Actually, to be fair, that's not what I'm being dismissive of tiger bread. Because actually tiger bread, because of its soft nature, you do need an extra sharp knife. Yeah, because it squashes down, doesn't it? Yeah. So that was me being. You want something that is getting into it before it's... Any Bred Smith, a.k.a. Paul Hollywood, listening to this would be... Hey, you bloody bugger. You've not thought that through, have you, lad? By the way, Paul, this is from all of us here at the podcast. Hope you squash the beef with Nigella. Yes. That's a great show. Very concerning stories coming from the Bake Off camp.

8:07Have you been chatting to some of your insiders? Yes. Some of your friends? I'd love to. Do you see those? You know those podcasts where, like, all they do is gossip. They just do sex stories. This is so funny. So what I've heard is all is not that rosy over in the tent. And then what I love to top that off is the experts. Yeah. Well, the thing is, with something like the Bake Off, what you're really, really going to need is top a talent, then you really need the judges to get on. There needs to be synergy. Now, what I'm hearing is all is not well at the Bake Off. What they've done, what they've done actually, is obviously you've got Paul Hollywood who's iconic and synonymous with the show.

8:46Yep. They've lost Prue, and they're thinking, let's get someone in that's on a star level, because Paul is a powerful character. He's a strong character. Richard, I'm going to ask you now. Yeah. Do you think that Vagov can go on without Paul Hollywood? Do they have to throw their chips in with Nigella and look for a new dawn? Look, it's a strong format, and it's sold internationally. Can it cope without Paul Hollywood? Well, look, you've got me over a barrel here. You have got me over a bloody barrel. Look, I'm going to give you... Give me four different answers and we'll put your best one in.

9:23This is my hot take. Okay, we need this. It's a hot take. The question isn't, can Bake Off survive without Paul Hollywood? The question is... Can Paul Hollywood survive without the Bake Off? No, he's got no other revenue stream. He's an awful businessman. Who wants to hear Doe, the podcast? Hey, guys, how are you doing? You know, right? It's me with a big lump of dough. What are we going to turn it into this week? Soda bread! Fuck off! I'm not making soda bread. It's a different dough. It's a tiger loaf. Today in the studio with me, I've got a bread maniac, Miss Kerry Katona. Kerry, you're a great big fan of bread.

10:05I'm not doing it. No, I can't. No. Kerry, you're a great big fan of bread.

10:14Anyway, sorry. Anyhow, I digress. So look, the bread knife is a wonder. I cut multiple slices, whole loaf is gone. Beautiful, big slice, perfect slices. Comments are made. The knife's sharp. It's a beautiful knife. You don't want sharp bread. No. If you actually squeeze a little bit of lemon onto a bit of bread with a bit of olive oil, beautiful. If you get a nice salty bit of bread. Okay. Yeah, a little bit of rosemary salt. yeah um anyhow uh i digress again um so my parents leave they go home we've done gracious bedtime i'm sat in front of the tv we've tidied up everything apart from the bread knife the knife two glasses katherine i'm gonna put it again what have you got left bread knife knife two glasses okay what's the other knife no it's a bread knife oh yeah no it's a bread knife bed board and two glasses um where's it but you said you said bread knife knife and two yeah no no no that was me just I was trying to be sort of, yeah.

11:11Okay. Yeah. So you got one of the four items wrong.

11:21I'd be awful in a place. Sorry. Sorry. We kind of knew that he was guilty the moment that he started reiterating what was on the table. He said bread knife. There's four things. Bread knife, knife. And then I looked at my partner like, okay. so what type of knife was that? Then he absolutely fell apart. And also he was covered in blood. Well, that's the thing. So anyway, yeah, it was a bread knife, breadboard, two glasses. Okay. Is the breadboard new? No, the bread, we'd say more breadboard, you know, breadboard, great bit of shit. Shitty old breadboard. Covered in bacteria, because you can never wash it properly.

11:56stinky. Fucking ingrained with, yeah, yogurt. Who's masturbating onto a breadboard? I don't know. What made you ask that question? oh I thought you said like wank no I said rank oh I thought you said wank of the two words what's the more likely one that I'm going to say obviously disgusting because you've wanked all over it who do you think I am you're horny if you think you've got this horny energy to you today no but I've not got horny energy what do you call sex that's fair that is fair that is fair so in my head you've come to this and you've sat up all proper and straight do you know what I mean yeah so I'm like you've been quite sexy with your impression no you're right It's my fault that you said wank on a breadboard.

12:38You're right. I take full responsibility. Oh, fucking hell. I'm no kitchen roll. I'll have to use a breadboard. Oh, my. Well, my, you have to. Nothing, Lisa. I'll be with you in a sec. It's not as absorbent, is it? Little tip for you. Don't go against the grain of the wood on either side. so anyway Catherine picks up the bread she's like I was going to tie these bits up I said just leave it till tomorrow the dishwasher's full but she picks it up picks up the breadboard as she picks it up the knife flies off the board comes down and just literally goes like that on her toe but we know the knife is sharp it just goes through her foot blood everywhere I'm talking like Netflix documentary blood I'm like quick sit down if anybody's seen Toe Sever on Netflix you'll know exactly what we're talking about cut me soon I run over quickly pressure on it with a couple of tea towels what's your reaction what's your energy like in this situation I'm not a panicker I was actually pretty cool and calm collected I can imagine that yeah by the way I'm just going to say it now clogs are a must in the house when you've got the knives is sharp you've got clogs I know you've got a couple of pairs of crocs or whatever crocs, clogs any kind of hard shoe when you've got knives like this you've got to be careful my friend so she hobbles over I'm sorry where does that end?

14:06what? now I'm wearing clogs because I've bought a sharp knife in my own house I'm not fucking buying a knife for which I have to buy clogs what are you talking about? you've got by the way if you get one of these hobs you need to have a full eye mask you need safety goggles because the heat on that bad boy you need safety gloves with some hobs and some pans yes sure you don't need safety gloves for a pan do you? If you pick up a pan that's all metal and it's gone through the handles, of course you need gloves. What are you picking that up with? Can I say what this shows? You do nothing in the kitchen.

14:44I do loads of stuff in the kitchen. But the pan's got a handle like that. No. One of those ones with a pot, more of a pot. Sure. So you use a tea towel. A tea towel? Are you mad? You're crazy. It's worked every time. Right. A little bit of water gets on a tea towel. I understand. Fuck it. No, but listen. Tom. Tom, I'd understand if I was talking to you with two severely burnt hands, but obviously I've been doing it my entire life and it's been absolutely fine. You're crazy. Well, clearly I'm not. I've not been burnt. This mung bean curry is going to fall over. Yeah. Well, I'll tell you what. Which kitchen has better safety?

15:21Mine where there'd be no incidents or yours where somebody's lost a toe. So who do you think's running their gap more safely? Okay, fair enough. Because you didn't wear your fucking knife clogs. Right. so the knife slits full dead she's lacerated her foot right blood everywhere okay we put pressure on the blood where's little G at this point she's in bed catching some Z's thank god so we put some pressure on it and then I look you know give it a little while just for the I look at it and it's a proper opening on her foot like did you get queasy no I'm not too bad with that stuff I'm bad I would be bad so then I'm like I think you're gonna have to go to the hospital and then she it was quite She couldn't lift her toe up, so her toe was just sort of hanging like that, like down.

16:06And I'm like, and she's like, I don't really want to go to hospital. It's late. And I was like, you need to go. So we took some pictures, sent it to my old ex-nurse and a friend of ours. And they were both like, no, she needs to go to hospital. So our friend, lucky enough, was around because Grace was asleep. Is anyone else feeling quite funny? And then she took her to the hospital. By that point, she's wearing a Adidas slider. it was just like it's just by the time she got to hospital and took the stock there was a sign of blood just pouring out of it so they've they've uh is she what's she like in this she's like you she's very queasy right then they've made it safe they've put some stery strips on it banished up cleaned it up uh and then she had to um so when she went back and then they're like no you've you've severed a couple of tendons so now she she's been unable she can't walk uh on it she'll be any weight on it she had an operation this week on the thing to tie the tendons back together but yeah she's basically got uh she's bed bound now for six days off this knife yeah how long had you had the knife for like six days first outing for the bread knife yeah just um uh and and now yeah so now so you've been running you've been running the house running the house how's that breakfasts dinners obviously working as well yeah which has been I mean, yeah.

17:26And look, our holiday's up in the air at the moment. Yeah. The holiday's very much up. Yeah, I'm fully aware. I'm going to be going away this week. Yeah. Can we fly? We were going to be on holiday together. I know. Talked about it on the radio I did. Yeah. Talked about it on the radio I did. What happened to me there? I want it last summer wine. I mean, there was, I didn't see the knife go through her foot. And we had been talking about seeing you on holiday. I was very enthusiastic. Grace, very enthusiastic about seeing her uncle Ramesh on holiday. Well, okay, let's get this out in the open. and I'm not worried about saying this because Catherine doesn't listen to the podcast but when you told me about you telling Catherine that our holidays were overlapping you said to me she went we're going to see them one day but no more than that she knows what I'm like with you you're like you're like my addiction you're my if I was on I'd see you every day I'd pop over for a coffee I think I would want to see it every day also by the way Holiday Rom is a thing of legend Holiday Rom I mean even today when I got here the dawn of holiday the little summer swag about you is there I can taste it I can sense it I can smell the sun cream coming on this guy I want to be around Holiday Rom you're literally five minutes down the road I'm not like I'm not seeing enough of you No but anyway the long and the short of it is Catherine made it clear that she didn't want us she didn't really want us to see each other that much Well she didn't want me to be around there every day And then all of a sudden Yeah There's a bread knife Yeah Teetering She looks across She sees the calendar Yeah Rom's arrival in Portugal I've drawn a picture of your face on the day that we're seeing you Yeah And then I'm not saying it was deliberate but I'm not saying it wasn't deliberate Well yeah Yeah, I'm saying it could have been her and Lisa.

19:24Yeah. But, you know, we both need our guys just for, you know. Lisa's like, I was really looking forward to some Ziggas of Galmoria on holiday. Listen, I don't mind you doing a derisive impression of me. What? That was just me just there as a sort of... How would you like if I did, oh, bloody hell, I've, oh, God, I've injured my tongue. That is actually a really good impression of Catherine. Tom brought a new bread knife. You know what he's like. That's actually a good impression of Catherine. Anyone who's fed Catherine, that's not... I mean, mine of Lisa was just sort of, yeah. Lisa's, yeah, I mean...

19:59I find Lisa quite difficult to impersonate. Yeah, she's very, yeah. Well, she knows drama and acting. No, but I don't think that's what it is. Just some people are more difficult to impersonate. You're very easy. There's versions of you you can do. Well, your impression of me is... Probably the... You are from the Keith Lemon school of impersonations, aren't you? where you just push it to some sort of extreme and you pick a person of colour and you try and caricature them to the point that they're at the end. Oh yeah, right, right, come down. Look, mine's not accurate, but it's more accurate than yours.

20:30This, okay, this is one of yours. Mine's not that accurate, but it's more accurate than yours. Okay, what happened at the end? I went for the laugh. Yeah, I went for the laugh.

20:46Mine's not. Fuck off. Okay, it's a bit more. Okay, it's a bit more. Go on, let me hear your voice. This is me just saying I love podcasts and football.

21:03I actually thought it was a little bit Joe Cole. Yeah. By the way, Joe Cole's killing it in the media. Oh, my God, what a guy. I love Joe Cole. He's got a real good energy to him. Can I ask you a question about Joe Cole? I know this is not a football podcast. I know this is not a football podcast. When I was at uni... Yeah. There was a guy. The uni crew? Yeah, big shout out to people that study. Who was your uni crew? Big shout out to books. Any names? That was a rapper I knew. No, I was talking about books, literally. Any names you want to shout out from the old uni crew, the old uni days? Semi.

21:34Yeah. Actually runs Target Football now. He and I used to present a hip-hop show on our pirate radio station. Amazing.

21:43Biscuit was a mate of mine. That's a pretty cool nickname. There we go. Semi and Biscuit. shout out yeah big shout out um your rider dies um okay anyway when i was at uni a mate of mine was a west ham fan yeah and he said to me there's this guy joe cole who's coming through the ranks at west ham and mark my words is going to be the best player in the world yeah was that that was the level of excitement he was yeah that was that was insane that time the excitement that kid had around and And you've got to remember as well, it was like Frank, Rio, Michael Carrick, the other people around him. But he was unreal.

22:20Like the stuff he used to do. I think that kind of got lost a bit at Chelsea for England. Still had a great career. Yeah, an incredible career. But when you saw what he could do and the skill he had on the ball and the tricks he used to do, he was almost like nothing we'd ever seen. The only time I felt that energy again is actually weirdly when I was coming up through the open mic circuit. Yeah. Well, yeah, people talked about you. Yeah, just people just sort of... I think there was a buzz about you. No, there was. That was a joke. No, no, no. Don't start making this real. I think there was. Trying to make it real.

22:53No, no, that was a pure joke. I think there was. No, don't. You and Steve Rimmer. Steve Rimmer.

23:01This is an advertisement from BetterHelp. Now, anyone who listens to this show regularly knows that mental health comes up a lot, and that's not accidental. Something we both think matters, and every time it does come up, we get messages from people saying it helped them feel less alone with something they were going through. Which tells you that a lot of people are carrying quite a lot at any given time. Work pressures, relationships, big life changes, just the general weight of everything. And for a long time the default was to get on with it quietly, not to mention it and hope it sorted itself out.

23:31Which obviously is not really a strategy. Generally one of the worst strategies. In fact it makes things worse. I speak from extensive personal experience. So we are delighted to be working with BetterHelp because having access to a qualified professional, someone to actually talk through what's going on with, makes a real difference, not just in crisis, but for everyday stuff too, the things that build up. And the numbers back that up. Over 6 million people globally have used BetterHelp. BetterHelp therapists have at least three years and a thousand hours of hands-on experience and hold all the required qualifications and certifications.

24:06there are over 30 000 of them worldwide covering everything from work stress to relationships to major life changes and you can fit it around your schedule whatever your week looks like there are flexible ways to connect that work around it which honestly is the bit that makes it actually doable rather than just another thing you mean to get around to but don't if you've been thinking about therapy better help can help you take the first step Sign up and get 10 % off at betterhelp.com slash wolfowl. That's betterhelp.com slash wolfowl. Hey, it's Kelly Rowland. You may not know this, but I have eczema.

24:47So I get how it can steal your time. But why let eczema take over when you can talk to your doctor about ebglyss? Ebglyss, Lubrikizumab LBKZ, a 250 milligram per two milliliter injection, is a prescription medicine used to treat adults and children 12 years of age and older who weigh at least 88 pounds or 40 kilograms with moderate to severe eczema. Also called atopic dermatitis that is not well controlled with prescription therapies used on the skin or topicals or who cannot use topical therapies. EbGliss can be used with or without topical corticosteroids. Don't use if you are allergic to EbGliss.

25:18Allergic reactions can occur that can be severe. Eye problems can occur. Tell your doctor if you have new or worsening eye problems. You should not receive a live vaccine when treated with EPCLIS. Before starting EPCLIS, tell your doctor if you have a parasitic infection. Paid partnership with Lilly. Respect your time. Ask your doctor about EPCLIS and visit ePCLIS.com or call 1-800-LILLY-RX or 1-800-545-5979. I'll tell you what is weird about when we came up in stand-up. Yeah. There's so many people from our year group that have gone on to be like and you sort of think I saw you we used to knock about when you were gigging in pubs and stuff I remember like I remember like gigging with Joel Domet like to six people do you know what I mean and like you and I one big one I gigged all the time like that was Michelle Deswort right I gigged loads of Michelle yeah and like really cruddy small little tiny gigs with no one there and I remember like travelling for miles and miles to go to somewhere and go oh this seven people here.

26:21Yeah. I remember doing Portsmouth Uni with Joe Rogan. Joe Rogan? I've no idea this guy's, do you know what I mean? I remember doing, and he was just doing stuff about, I think it was like KFC. I remember doing an awful uni gig. The breading. He kept going, the breading. I remember doing an awful uni gig. What's the 11th herb? Tell me, Colonel. Sorry, go on. You and I, if I, Graham and me did an awful uni gig. Yeah. That's really terrible. I died so badly that night. I've got a diary somewhere at home. Yeah. I remember looking back when I came back to stay. Dear diary, I met somebody, one of my comedy heroes tonight, and Romesh.

26:57I've ever been across that gig. I just want to be able to be good at this. I know people respect me as an actor and as a character, but I'm more than that. I've got a lot to offer this world. And when I turn up to gigs like that, travel all that way, just to deliver my unique blend of jokes and tomfoolery, which was the name of my... P.S. call your first tour Tomfoolery. It just really breaks my heart to see people not understanding all the levels on which my Burger King story operates. Can I say, you jest. The diary entry was not far away from that. It was genuinely like... Yeah, just... Just like...

27:42I had notes on gigs, and it was like the level... I've somehow seen how high the level can be around the other people, my peers. No, you have a real... No, genuinely. I remember Ivo crushing it and being like, oh my God, he's fucking amazing. I can't remember... I mean, Ivo is amazing, to be fair. Yeah, he's amazing. You were headlining that night. I was on in the middle and then it was you. And I think it might have been Andrew Lawrence was comparing. But you went on and crushed it. I don't think I did, mate. You did. I remember just sitting there just thinking... You know, like... You know, this feels when a camera goes towards someone and it's like the spaceship's about to smash into Earth and they realised how fucking shit the situation is.

28:20I was like, oh, wow, there's a lot of work to do. No, but, okay, it's interesting you say that, right? Because whenever people ask me about my worst ever gig, I did a gig in Leicester and I was comparing. Yeah. And on that bill was Dana Alexander, Rudy Liquid, Ava Vidal, right? Yeah. All great comics. Yeah. My recollection of that gig, and this is like I've got a vivid memory, is that every single time I went on, I died on my arse and then I'd bring one of the acts on and they'd smash it, right? and that happened three times obviously like for all three of the acts at one point this I haven't made up at one point my internal monologue came out and I just went I fucking hate this you said that on stage yeah I just went I'm fucking like quite quietly so I turned to myself I'm fucking hating this and somebody in the audience went why don't you just fuck off then right so I said I said something along the lines of do you know what I think I will please welcome Rudy Liquid right or something along those lines Rudy came on and smashed it anyway last night I've always told that story and I do think that happened right last night I was I'm trying out stuff for the tour yeah so I went and did the comedy store yeah because I could drop in Dana was on at that gig last night right so I walk in and we're having a chat we're catching I've not seen her for I don't think it'd be exaggeration say 10 years I know if you've seen Dana for right so we're catching up chatting how's it going blah blah blah and then I start telling her about I said Dana do you remember this gig that we did in Leicester and she said, yeah, I died, right?

29:48I went, what? And her recollection of that gig is that she had a terrible one. My vivid memory is that everybody had a great gig apart from me. She said it was one of the longest drives home she's ever had and she was chatting to Ava about it because she didn't feel it went well at all. And I'm just thinking, I don't know what the, I mean, there's obviously her version, my version and then the truth. Yeah, yeah. But it's like, it's weird how we, so what I'm saying to you is, I don't remember crushing that gig I remember you being no no but what I'm saying is your memory could skew yeah no no no but I also I remember you know it's probably similar to you but I remember watching you and Ivo and thinking oh wow fucking hell these guys genuinely I mean all joking like that you had your style was there you know your leaps and bounds in front of where I was and Ivo I think Ivo is one of the best I think he's increased so imaginative he's got such a different way I was genuinely like, oh, fuck.

30:45Like, this is... Not even back to the drawing board. This is go back to the drawing board that we've been working on. Throw it out a fucking top story window and get another drawing board. Because it was... But then that is the nature of... We were texting yesterday. And stand-up is... It's really hard. It is a fucking soul-destroying thing at times. If you're good at it, it's hard. Yeah. But luckily, what you realised is if you get enough of an acting profile, it doesn't matter what you do on stage, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's how most of my tours and my shows sell. Another one. That's what I said at the beginning of every tour.

31:16I can half-ass this now. Pulled out. Pulled out my pants. Oh, out of first gear, big boy. And squat. No, you're an amazing stand-up. I'm only joking. Did you make a lot of Facebook friends on the open mic circuit? What an insane question. No, no, no. Right. When you're first starting out, right, and you're going out to those gigs, and you gig with people, and you chat to them, we were talking about Facebook was in its pomp. Oh, in its pomp. Yeah. That was the pomp of Facebook. That was a big time. Those were the Facebook side. And you were trying to make friends within the circuit. You know, I didn't, you know, gig a couple of times with people.

31:51And you'd be like, oh, yeah. And it's really weird now when I look back at people that I used to think, oh, wow, they're really fucking good. They're definitely going to be a big name. And then now I haven't. But there's one guy in particular, and I won't name him because that would be Dissinger, but he never really came out of the open mics after the open mics. I did my first Edinburgh on a similar bill than him and arguably found his level. He's now mounting a comeback and it's one of the most intriguing things I've ever seen on Facebook or any social media. But the way he's describing himself is like, oh, wow, this guy has drunk a lot of Kool-Aid.

32:32The way he describes it is like, I'm bringing this back. I never thought I would. and people aren't booking me for the big rooms. But you need to know, I've not done this for me. I've done this for the audience. No, he didn't. I swear. It's insane. He's writing stuff like that. It's like, when will people understand how good they are? Is he doing this as a joke? No. No. And now, because of AI, he's made these really fucking flashy sort of like poster pictures of sort of like, you know, how he used to be and how he is now. And yeah, it's an insane thing. I'm like, wow. like the confidence of him.

33:09I wanted to just call him and go, hey, is there any chance we can just hang out so I can just get a little bit of this fucking front-footed? It's insane. Where do you stand on AI posters? Well, I know Mandrell love them.

33:29That's what happens when you have a small brand and no marketing with it. I think what Mandrell need to do is start doing pictures where they go some elements of this do not contain AI we need to do we need to do some more content that's actually us that's been we talked about Matt and Julie the other week there's a lot of people saying you need to actually by the way I should say thank you to all the people who have I was looking at the lens there to the people who have been in touch to give us some tips on how to market yeah because we've been we just haven't been marketing it well enough is it doing alright though it's doing okay it's doing pretty well but it could be doing better and the tips that I've been given and some lovely people have got in touch I've read the messages I've replied to some and they're very very kind well thought out oh that's nice balanced things so AI pictures we're trying to get away from that right there's a new dawn coming I'd love you to be a part of it just you like that fucking hell just grinning some electrolytes getting down your neck yeah well I love the electrolytes as you know I need to get you some more.

34:37Yeah, I mean, you've sent me quite a bit. Yeah. I'm probably good, actually. Yeah. I think, I don't want to make an estimate of projected lifespan, but I think what you've sent me will probably see me out. Four barrels of electrolytes. Just throw them in the garage lease. Which is another soon for sex.

35:01Find another way for me to hydrate.

35:07anyway footwise yeah she's she's on the mend now so fingers crossed we can go on holiday um what's going on with you the rompska uh well theo is on holiday now wow the romantic holiday i showed him the well it's not he's going with his girlfriend yeah that's a romantic holiday yeah um i showed him the video stolen kisses yeah did you say stolen kisses stolen kisses what does Stolen kiss made. It means a little kiss. Like, you're all sitting there. You're, I don't know, you're at the fun fair or you're Disneyland or whatever. And sort of that'll be chatting away and Theo will go. Oh, that's cute.

35:43That's a stolen kiss. Stolen moments. Yeah. Yeah. They sort of fizzle out, don't they? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because it's like, get off, what are you doing? Are you okay? Yeah. We're outside, you fucking idiot. I tell you what, why don't you brush your teeth? I can smell you coming from there, pouring away. I'm trying to get on with something. I'm actually doing this, so it's not helpful. I don't want my ear licked. You're not a dog. So that was quite... Emotional? Yeah. No, not emotionally. Emotion is the wrong one. Not emotional. But, you know, I had a big old hug. That's nice. Said to him, make me have a great time.

36:24It's the first time he's going on holiday with ours. Did you say that? Pardon? Make me proud? I don't think I want to say that as he goes off on holiday with his girlfriend. What does that mean? how does he interpret that I meant like because he's going away with another family oh I see don't let the Ranganathans down yeah I don't really worry about that I think he'll be fine yeah by the way he's a he's a yeah he's a good soldier he's a good soldier meant to send out he's he's like a strong boy he's a yeah he's a good advocate for your family advocate yeah

36:57he is though he's a person boy yeah he's great he's like your Beckham in some ways. I had, so one of Charlie's, Charlie's got a really close friend now from Oliver. Nice. Can you name? Can I name the kid? Yeah. I don't think so. But, I just want to, because I know I can picture them. That's weird. From the name? Yeah. Snoop Dogg. Really? It's his nickname? Yeah. His nickname is Snoop Dogg? No. Oh, okay. I just wanted to give you something to fix that on. No, so Charlie's friend, he came to our house. Nice. and then Lisa said to me we're all hanging out Charlie wants us to all go out together can I say by the way what a great kid that's an incredible thing to say at his age well he wants somebody to buy fast passes to Thorpe Park I think so we went to no no no no don't say it no no that's a lovely gesture so we went to just tell you you're brewing up three incredible young men thanks that's very sweet of you to say so we went to Thorpe Park Lisa is laughing laughing

38:00so you went to Thought Park the reason I did that is because what you just said is what we call in the industry true no we went to Thought Park got fast passes so it's you Charlie Lise and his mate and his mate and Alex and Alex Lise didn't want to go on any of the rides so we didn't get her a fast pass so the four of us had fast passes we're going on all the rides did you have a little anthem We're fast past weird till we die. We're fast past till we die. No. Okay. I know that when you go on these things, you're desperately recognised as much as you possibly can be. So you're drawing as much attention.

38:39You wear a luminous hat. You'll often wear sort of King Gary or emergency successful merch in the hope that somebody clocks you. I'm more trying to keep a low point. No, he wouldn't wear all his own merch, really. Sad fuck. I've got a sad loser who would wear a King Gary t-shirt if you were King Gary. It's me. I am King Gary. Do you want to get a picture? No, I'm right. Well, I did wear a wolf and owl cap in Disneyland. Yeah, but who in Disneyland is going to, yeah. No, exactly. The American market. We're not cracking up. Anyway, Lisa and the kids wanted to go on the ghost train. Yeah. So that was the only ride she went on, I think, the whole day.

39:14So I said, I'll wait at her. Did she borrow your Fast Pass? Yeah. Cool. So she went on to the ghost train. It's so funny. You didn't want a Fast Pass. You gave it to Q, Lisa. Boys, you go on ahead because obviously you invested in the Fastpass and your mum will see us in about an hour, I imagine. So I sat out on a table. I actually met a few Wolf and Al fans while I was sat there. Shut up. I sat out in the open sun, not in the shade. When you say beautiful, it fucked me for the rest of the day. Oh, what? Sunstroke? Yeah. You know what's a great cure for sunstroke? What? Mandra, electrolytes. Hydration is the key.

39:53It's funny you say that. I then spent the rest of the day basically trying to hydrate myself out of feeling really rank. You can't do that with Fizzy Pop. You've got to drink. No, I was drinking water. Oh, okay. Sorry, who the fuck do you think you're talking to? Well, you're out with a lot of kids. I'm just like, you're hanging out. Yeah, but I don't try and fit in with the kids by drinking what they're drinking. Oh, Charlie, what sweets are you getting? I'm going to get the same, so I can be cool like you. No, you won't be able to. He's 11. you know but I know what you're like you're like I can just see you just quaffing back snapples going I'm still thirsty no yeah water and electrolytes yeah thought part you can't move for snapples what has happened to a snapple it's really fallen off I don't think it was ever officially released here was it yeah it's an American product yeah but you had it stay in the sun oh I used to love it whistle stop I used to get a whistle stop at the airport I love a snapple fruit punch fucking delightful mate over the days they used to do like I think a raspberry lemonade type one yeah good That was a very good one.

40:51That was good. A lot of sugar, though. Yeah. Yeah. That's probably why you're not hydrating. No, I didn't drink any snapples. No, I'm just saying. You've got to have, yeah, water is the key. And also sips.

41:08Just a sip, sip. Okay? Okay. I mean, there's two quite quick sips. What I would say is if you're continuing to sip at that rate, it's not that difficult. It's not that different from gulping. what's the science behind that by the way because it that will just literally just flood your stomach and it won't have as much yeah the gentle sips you're constantly hydrating okay let's can we verify this please thank you just put his gulping I do believe you by the way but I would love to know why this is a big moment for Ben he gets his first moment to read out some facts do I read them you can look at the damning search history there Ben what's he looking at clogs yeah John's feet sipping water is generally better than gulping I know that what's the explanation better absorption less bathroom trips big one for you at your age we're the same age I know yeah three times a night sometimes three times a night you are now but then I drink loads before bed because at the moment I've been reading this thing that apparently you're going to drink more water a glass of water before you go to bed to help thin your blood because your blood thickens during the night when you're asleep, right?

42:19Right. So the thing you're going to do is do that and when you wake up you're going to have a glass of water when you wake up. Right, as soon as you wake up. And not get up and walk around straight away. You're going to sit, just sit at the edge of your bed or just sit in bed and let your body absorb the water, thin your blood and then get up and take you to start the day. The worst thing you can do is, which I've been doing for the last 20 years is get up, alarm goes, I jump out of bed, coffee and then I'm just dehydrated anyway and then I'm starting the day. And that's most heart attacks happen between seven and 10.

42:49I'm so obsessed with heart attacks at the moment. It's unbelievable. I literally, I'm driving myself into a place of anxiety. That's good. That's the best way to avoid one, by the way. About heart attacks. Do you often do it while you're eating a lot of bacon? By the way, I don't have bacon anymore. Not since my colon incident. Bacon is as bad as smoking. Is that true? Yeah. Bacon and sausages, processed meat is worse. I'd like to hear anybody who's having a smoky bacon. Yeah, and a fag. And a fag. and vaping yeah vaping's bad yeah but bacon is a killer yeah bacon's a killer Ben am I meant to fat check that yeah please can you look is bacon as bad as smoking no bacon is not worse for you than smoking no okay okay so it's all not but look bacon isn't great for you your bacon that you're having your soy bacon's probably okay yeah I don't really eat a lot of that you used to love that stuff didn't you you used to show off a bit not show off but you used to sort of oh this stuff's amazing no I didn't bacon wasn't it called yeah Yeah, but I never said this stuff's amazing.

43:45Yeah, I remember early podcasts. Go back and listen. I would not... Oh, actually, no, you're right. There was a time. No, because there's that one, This Isn't Bacon. Yeah. And then I gave it to one of the kids and the kids said, yeah, it's fine. And then I realised that I might have got carried away. It is nice, though. So, Thought Park, you're dehydrated. Yeah. And so then we went on Colossus. Oh. This is my issue with the Colossus. And Thought Park, I'd love you to do something about this, but I don't think you can. the thing comes down and you've got two pads here where the thing comes down and your head just rattles between them at the end of it I felt can you look up Colossus head knocks please can I say how they get round it because my head and your head are wildly different no but I just think that they've got to change it's rock hard you've got two rock hard oh what are you saying like a little cushion I think so but then what you're going to have is bacteria pillows absorb more bacteria than tiles I wouldn't say they were tiles yeah yeah but a hard surface does not absorb unless it's a unibrain anyway it's quite painful suggest keeping your head slightly forward and press firmly against one side of the rigid over the shoulder restraint I'm not doing it like I'm like I've just been a victim of a crime and a police officer's turned up and I'm like like that the whole way through yeah I can't do that if you've got neck problems don't go on Colossus there you go Dadwise how did you do today?

45:10Great. I give myself a nine out of ten. Really? Charlie's friend going, hey, Charlie. What? Your dad's fucking cool, man. Although I did a thing where... Oh, this is my favourite stuff. Okay, so he stayed round. Did you moonwalk to one of the rides? No, but... Let's get out of the colossus, kids. No, but it wasn't that far away. Oh, no, what? So the next morning... You're pumped because you've just smashed... No, no, no, but I just went and said... Lisa's like that, hey, I wanted to say something. Charlie's going to be so proud of you. You've been a great dad today. fancy one yeah I mean that wasn't that far from happening so then I'd go to their room yep and I'd say you boys sleep alright we did a second day I won't go into that now but we did a second day wow fucking hell when Charlie makes a friend yeah so then I was sort of being ironic and I said anyway guys I'm going to get some breakfast take it easy what yeah they don't get irony no and then Charlie's mate went nobody does that oh all of that good work i know the hydrate is still fucking going on the colossus that's epic daddy i know all the cool shit you've done the stuff that you won't talk about which i'm imagining is pretty bougie right the next day you're you're embarrassed we went to gravity max and did go what gravity max and fucking philip park in two days okay so the kids are living the absolute dream yeah there's text messages firing off in the whatsapp group of the oliver kids going fucking hell if you get a chance to go around the Ranganathans do it, this fucking guy is cool as fuck they're all like yeah, Charlie's not that fucking got it and then you do that and all of a sudden it's like that's the thing that will be remembered yeah oh my god you'll never guess what Charlie said didn't you go to go-kart and thought don't worry about that, we're about to have breakfast and he was like let's get some breakfast surf sap yeah it was bad I'm not even defending myself that is at least it's like oh I don't think you'll be coming in the garage

47:18you've done something eggy and then you've got to try and get out of eggsville you almost become more eggy yeah I was trying to be ironic yeah they didn't clock that yeah then you almost turn it up to sort of get it over the line yeah I know people don't do that I was like Peace out. Yeah. Fucking. Yeah. And then I went downstairs and just had to sit down. Yeah. Oh, God, that went terribly. Charlie came down and went, what are you fucking doing? What are you fucking doing? Mum's waiting for you in the garage. Okay. Tom, shall we?

47:54Lions roar and eagles soar. Right. And everything's had its place. But, yo, just take a moment. What happens if you saw a lion with wings flying by? or an eagle sat on top of the rock. I mean, to be fair, eagles do sort of do that. My point is, it's very easy to put things in a stereotypical way. It's very easy to go, hey lion, I don't want to see you flying because that will give me the absolute crazy heads, whatever that means.

48:26Pigeon holding, and actually pigeons as well, is very easy to just go, that's the thing it should do. But you know what? Every now and again, you need to break free of those. Break free of the way that the world sees you. Even if you can't fly with wings, maybe just watching a lion take a massive jump and go, wow, he looked like he was flying for a second there. Lion feels good. He's accomplished something new. Don't be bound down by the weights of life that have been tied around your ankles for too long. Find a new you. Break new ground. Do something new. Do something for you. And go get those wings.

49:05It's time to fly, friend. really good I'm assuming you watched the Wuzzles recently the entire story seems to have ripped off that whole concept do you remember the Wuzzles? I don't know the Wuzzles are like two animals merged together there's a whole cartoon of animals there was a flying lion I think it was called Bumble Lion it was a big scheme they had to try and reduce discrimination against interracial families and relationships really? No. Oh, okay. Thank you so much.
