In short

Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis discuss Misfits Boxing as entertainment vs legitimate boxing, compare it to other sports/charity matches, debate influencer call-outs, and rant about social-media toxicity and misinterpreted “banter.” They also swap gym advice after Romesh injures his sciatic nerve, then tell a “Dalton Cruey” NASA dream story.

Guest backgrounds

No guests. Hosts are comedians/presenters Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis.

Key claims

Misfits Boxing undermines boxing’s elite, dangerous nature, especially when trainers/fighters are asked for opinions; body-shots-only rules make it more like WWE than real boxing. Social media enables harmful comments/threats through misread jokes and anonymous “firewalls.” Gym progress should use fewer sets to near-max effort.

Notable examples

Jimskin (trajectory and “toxic male” misconceptions), Bevo at Misfits, Jordan McGann’s influencer crusade, Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson, Anthony Joshua vs Jake Paul, death threats over Black Lives Matter commentary, and the “Dalton Cruey” NASA monkey/diarrhea spaceship tale.

0:00Romesh Ranganathan:Welcome to the Wolf and Hell podcast with me, Romesh Ranganathan. And I, Tom Davis. Now, if you're watching, which most of you are, very exciting times because after last week's episode, Tom was issued the challenge of choosing a top for both him and myself. And I've got to say, he's absolutely smashed it. I've got to say, you thought it was going to be a comedy top, didn't you? I thought you were going to stitch me up, yeah. I'm not that guy. I wanted to buy something that I wanted to feel like. nice you could feel that that feels like my arms around you when you're wearing it feels like such a vibe yeah and look at you with the unbuttoned down yeah yeah i've gone i've gone for a little bit of a move you look like the uh do you know how i feel like the guy that gets told off in the art shop in beverly hills cop yeah or gary bushy in uh point break oh yeah nice yeah yeah yeah

1:05Romesh Ranganathan:that's a nice cap as well yeah it's a nice cap yeah I went in there shout out Abercrombie and Fitch shout out Abercrombie and let's not forget Fitch I'm going to say by the way also shout out one of the best shop workers I've seen in a long time she was very very fun she had great swift just good banner yeah good chat it was like you felt like yeah you know what i turned around i was like this this top would look amazing on my friend and she was like oh you're buying for your friend i was like yeah my best friend and she was like wow and then she was like i've never heard that before and i was like yeah he's wearing it just now we're going out i could obviously have it in the podcast yeah we're going out of the town i was like he's recently divorced, he's looking for love.

1:49Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, stop projecting. That's a look that you... It is a bit of a divorcee vibe, isn't it? Yes. Yeah. But you're through the worst of it. What do people say? It's giving. It's giving back out on the town. You were ahead of the aura curve, weren't you? What does that mean? Well, it's become such a big thing. Aura is used in everything now. Yeah, I'm not... I wasn't ahead of the aura curve because of me. It's my children. Yeah, no. Well, it's Jimskin, right? Jimskin? Jimskin brought back aura. What has made it big? Yeah. No, but I think we were, Aura predates Jimskin. I think Jimskin's leveled up Aura.

2:21Can I say, I think Jimskin. By the way, I'm a big fan of Jimskin. I think, yeah, he's a really positive guy.

2:26Romesh Ranganathan:But this is, people are fucking making it out like Jimskin invented fucking influencing. What's going on here? I think in a puddle full of quite... Yeah, in a puddle full of vomit, he's the nicest chunk of carrot. So harsh on him. I'd say that he's a fly on the couch no I'm gonna he's not I'm gonna say I like Jim Skinner I like it I've been a fan for a long time and I've seen with him I think he's somebody you could tar him with the brush of like being sort of toxic male but he's not that at all no no no what's interesting he looks alpha yeah but I've watched his trajectory from where he started it's very he's changed a lot he not he was ever toxic he was never that thick no but he did surround himself with some less yeah than savoury characters.

3:14Romesh Ranganathan:Did you see, I think it was some boxing match where those guys just started on him randomly. Yeah, and the way he dealt with that was phenomenal. Unbelievable. But he also, I just think, did you see the Madonna thing with him? Yeah. I thought it was a lookalike. I couldn't believe that Madonna's hanging out with Jim's skin. No disrespect to Jim's skin. Yeah, but can I say there's an air of quite sweet vulnerability about him. I'm sure he's not vulnerable. I'm sure he's creaming every, what I love as well, but he's creaming every cent. He's what, sorry? Creaming every cent. What does that mean?

3:43he's milking every

3:44Romesh Ranganathan:oh I see every opportunity disgusting my opinion can I say by the way can I say that one of my favourite things is he got booked to essentially the job I was doing and he was just a lot better to be the guy behind the scenes at the boxing and he was oh is he doing the job that you were doing yeah he's doing it a lot better than I was I cared too much about boxing and also cared I just found it very difficult it's not in my wheelhouse his first gambit is I don't really like boxing. I'm just here for the fucking buzz and for the aura. And I was like, that's one of the best things in the world. Authentic.

4:19Yeah, he did it at football. They said, are you a big Arsenal fan? I mean, not really. He doesn't seem... And I'm like, oh good. In a world where everyone's like, I'm the biggest Arsenal fan ever. Yeah. You get this guy. Yeah. I like him. I think he's a... Yeah. I hope your boys are into him, right?

4:37Romesh Ranganathan:I've not. I think they know of him. Who is the coolest one for the boys, for the kids? Who's the coolest one of my kids? No, I'm not saying fucking that. That'd be awful. Who's the coolest one for my kids? Probably Bevo. Oh, man. If there's ever been a more traffic... I know that we've discussed him arguably too much, but he's really dug the depths. I feel a bit sorry for him, actually. I feel very sorry for him. Somebody took his hat off and threw it into the ring at the Misfits fight. I've not seen that bit. It's pretty bad. But the guy's getting bullied. Yeah, my algorithm, by the way, has cut a lot of this stuff out.

5:12You're mainly spots get in. Yeah, which arguably is better than watching.

5:18Romesh Ranganathan:It's a very toxic world. My kids are quite into, they're quite like Nico from Beta Squad. They're like... I like him. They're all of Beta Squad, really. They're still... Sidemen, still very big in there. Not big in there. Big in their lives. KSI's left now, right? Yeah, very controversial, that, isn't it? Yeah. It's not controversial. KSI said he's leaving. they Sidemen issued a statement saying we're not sure we were hoping that we could do like a big goodbye thing that didn't happen this had kind of slightly blindsided us then there's a bit of confusion now because KSI said I want to spend more time with my family and then he did another interview saying he wants to be the new Mr.

5:57Romesh Ranganathan:Beast or whatever he's aiming for his number of followers and stuff and now he's doing loads of content so I think he has just wanted to go solo obviously he wanted to go solo like a boy band splitting up yeah basically like for you when Robin have to take that yeah yeah yeah yeah um so i don't i don't know people that love the sidemen are pissed off for ksi and but ksi's got fans sidemen have got fans they'll all be all right i imagine would you make a misfits boxing by the way did you watch the last i mean are you a i think it i've by the way i i don't think it should be called misfits boxing why because i don't i think it's as far away from boxing as you could possibly i think by the way it's great entertainment i think in the world of wwe and and wacky stuff happening there's an element of the showmanship of it i go fair enough that but it's a i think it's it's actually quite a i think it's derogatory almost to sort of like boxing is one of the most elite sports that you can do i think knowing a number of boxes and the things that boxers put themselves through to become a boxer i actually think weirdly ksi and and tommy fury and eddie hall the people who take it i thought the last show was was almost like oh this this has almost hit the lowest ebb of what Misfits could be as an air of like this is boxing.

7:13Because I think that actually, to be fair, actually some of the events before almost look like, oh, actually, they're training, they're taking it seriously. Yeah. And then it's like, oh no, this is gone.

7:23Romesh Ranganathan:I do agree with you. And I think that it's a bit of a circus, that whole Misfits thing. Yeah. And also, you're seeing it, like I saw, I watched, sorry to bring Beavar up again, But I saw a video of him hanging around that event. Yeah. And he was just basically whoring himself out on the camera going, I'll fight anybody. And they were going, who do you want to fight? And he goes like, look, I'll start shouting people out when I'm like my shoulder sorted out. And that has become an avenue for influencers to have a payday, right? So there's all these kind of fake little beasts being set up. And boxing is a really hard sport.

7:59Romesh Ranganathan:And so there's an argument that Misfits is kind of undermining that on making it a little bit of a laughing stock. My counter argument to that would be that football's really hard and footballers put themselves through a lot to get professional football and people aren't saying the same things about Soccer Aid as they're saying about Misfits Boxing. Do you know what I mean? And like the side men do a charity match and nobody says these same things. So I feel like it's slightly double standards. I think the difference is what boxing is as a physical sport. of I think the fact of punching someone in the head has made to knock them you know not to quote fucking boxes I've heard but to deem someone unconscious not to knock someone out is that it's once you start fucking about with that stuff like boxing is it's more potentially dangerous football of messing around football and you know you're going to realize quite quickly that you're not as good as a profession whatever but I think boxing if you if you go into it and you're half baked and you don't really care, I think there could be a real big miss of it.

9:02Something bad could happen.

9:03Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, I think the other thing is... And also this calling out and trying to, this whole sort of bevo there going, I'll fight anyone. And you see this whole... And the other thing is, I think the thing that slightly muddied it is that when people watch Soccer Aid, nobody is asking anybody in the world of football what they thought of the Soccer Aid match, right? No. Whereas in boxing, Misfits has for some reason become legitimised to the point where boxing trainers and fighters have been asked what do you think about the Misfits event which is kind of insulting to them because it's like going oh you know this little side show thing can we have your take on it I think that's a bit mad because the thing I think is actually the boxing itself is I think when you've got a situation where two people are having a body hits only competition which is what happens in don't hit the face, you're not allowed to hit the face which becomes slightly ridiculous you've almost got to lean into the ridiculous and I think then it becomes saying it's more WWE and then it's entertainment and if I'm honest with you, I sat and watched it I thought Jordan McGann was incredible to big the fight up and spend the whole week just building this whole thing up and actually took it kind of for what it is I mean, Jordan rapper slash influencer Jordan McGann had a fight with Ibiza final what the fuck is going on?

10:25Romesh Ranganathan:You lean into the ridiculous, right? Right, right, right. So you're saying, because that's so far that way. Yeah. But what my point was, when it started, and you KSI to whatever you thought of him as a boxer, or even Jake Paul. But they take it seriously. Yeah, that's what I mean. And Tommy Fury, there were people, Eddie Hall, I love Eddie Hall, they're out training, right? But then this last event was seemingly like, oh, this is like, this is what I mean about, Jordan McGann took it for what it was. And also, I kind of found it quite hilarious, his rant against influencers. Yeah. And it was on a one-man crusade to take down influencers.

11:00And I was like, well, that's a battle I can get with. Yeah. But I felt that his actual, his way to, and to be fair to him, even like, you know, big stacks, I'm not a big fan of big stacks, but I'm like, it was like, it was like WWE. It was like this whole thing is played up to the cameras because it doesn't really matter about the fight and actually what the fight includes because you've got a battle here that is done with body shots only. So no one's really here to watch great boxing. That's never been a case.

11:28Romesh Ranganathan:Hold up, so which bits were body shots only? This big stacks fight was body shots only. You couldn't hit in the face. Because essentially what you're paying for is a fight in Wetherspoons. There's no... Aside the Tommy Fury and Eddie Hall fight, which was as close as you get to an actual fight, and I thought Eddie had trained well and Tommy used the ring well, I thought at least that was, oh, this resembles a boxing fight. This is a fight. everything below that felt slightly just a bit whack and then you go well then then make it whack that's what it is it's just silly it's just you're there to see big characters and they're all big characters face off and be silly but i think if you're actually having the fact that someone could whack someone in the head and it go wrong that's where it starts getting a bit yeah of a weird thing yeah uh yeah i thought it was mad but um look if anybody if misfits are interested in me Who do you want to fight most?

12:20Romesh Ranganathan:I don't want to fight anybody. Misfits? Oh, come on. There must be someone. No, I've got no desire to fight anybody. Come on. You want a Misfits. You want a Misfits fight. I don't know. You know the thing that upset me? Not upset me. I think the Misfits thing is fine. Like two people who've become big online or whatever fighting each other, fine. I think that's cool. And I think there is an audience for that. And I'm never going to begrudge people making money however they make money. The thing that I found more heartbreaking is when legitimate ex-boxers fight YouTubers or whatever yeah like when I'm saying this I'm thinking about the Jake Paul Mike Tyson fight right now I'm happy for Mike Tyson but that's not Misfits that's like a I know I know that's a separate thing but I'm talking about this is a different phenomenon right but Jake Paul I think does take it seriously yeah yeah and I think look he has got if I'm being honest I think we can all agree he's got a Helmer-esque vibe about him yeah right but he worked hard at trying to trained to be a boxer admittedly with the resources and time that most people wouldn't have to do that right yeah my and mike tyson gets a payday the thing that i find upsetting about it is that mike tyson and look he's a controversial figure but let's just take mike tyson as a boxer yeah that's somebody who's come out of retirement to sort of just dirty his hands with this like fucking weird i mean i think the situation there is one that i think financially he was sure probably needed it which is sad to say because i think of you know the controversial sort of side of him but also i think you know having been a you know watch as a fighter being a big fan but also like read a lot about him and how his life was you know manipulated and and you know was awful things that he did and and i think the fact is that he was in a situation where he needed that money.

14:12I actually think Anthony Joshua quashed that thing quite resoundedly, sort of taking Jake Paul out of the equation. What did you think of Anthony Joshua fighting Jake Paul? I actually thought number one, it's financially secured Anthony Joshua's life generationally, but also, I actually think it put a pin in the cushion as to, is this guy good enough to be a professional fighter going up against what is an incredible heavyweight, and actually, he was miles off it. I think he ran around the ring and he you know it was it was two different people do essentially two different sports yeah so I think but look but also I do think that there's a world where I love WWE for the spectacle and if I'm honest with you I sat and watched Misfits and all the stuff around it I actually quite enjoyed I was like it's just fucking insane and it's mad and it's stupid and it's silly and it's

15:02Romesh Ranganathan:but even WWE is like WWE is mad but those are professionals yeah and then in this country you are but you're paying I know but we've got comedians have a go at the wrestling there's the wrestling isn't there yeah so I don't know the whole thing's a bit of a it's a bit of a mad one but I think that when people that are in actual boxing get asked about what their take is on the Misfits fights I think that's a bit bananas but that would be better if it was like four drunk blokes just going yeah I thought he was going to knock him out yeah because that's what you're watching you're watching you're watching a pub fight so who do you want to fight I don't think it's not something I'd like to do really if you had to I don't know if they offered you a lot of money say there was like somebody that said I want to fight the guy from Wonka like they've got some vendetta there's some celebrity who's got a vendetta against the Wonka movie and he decided I've got to go I've got to step up for the whole of Wonka yeah who for Olivia and Timothy and Matt Lucas and Matt Bainton who would you like that to be?

16:12I don't know number one it'd have to be someone of my size to make it like a thing I don't know imagine if Jermaine Clement hated Blanca that would be a weird mirror like he's not how tall is Jermaine Clement? he's quite tall I don't think he's as tall as you some of my favourite things Murder and Successful like recently some of your just name me some of your favourite things no no no another one of your favourite things King Gary we've put clips up recently where's another one of your

16:44Romesh Ranganathan:favourite things Action Team The Curse none of them are available anymore on streaming services that's good news if you do want to check them out tough shit sadly so true yeah but I get loads of people who have never seen this shit from around the world now watching it on Facebook or Instagram who'll go oh my god Jermaine Clement got fucking ugly or is this Jermaine Clement nobody said Jermaine Clement got fucking ugly I've had that I've had has this guy eaten Jermaine Clement and Matt Berry but it's quite a lot the Jermaine Clement one is insane to the point it's you're like I actually think because I think Jermaine's a very handsome man and I don't think I look like him enough I am you've got it you've had people say this yeah people say this to me I had a thing where like I am I saw Trevor Noah talking about something like this.

17:40Romesh Ranganathan:The other day, there was a guy who was on this morning and he has had, he's an Asian guy, and he had a really big facial disfigurement. Yeah. And somebody, and they constructed this part of his face and he has to wear it on his, because he's got like a cavity in his face. Like the Phantom of the Opera. Yeah, almost. He's like really disfigured, but it's like a prosthetic sort of thing that attaches to his face, right? Yeah. so I got tagged in that post in a comment on that post oh my god going is this Romesh Ranga's brother right okay about this guy why brother because I guess because of my eye yeah but why would it be your brother fuck knows so but as a joke yeah so then I've replied to that comment because I thought this is like I think I was like what the fuck have you said that for so then I replied going banter's not for everyone right that's all i said yeah he then sent me a private message saying i'm really sorry if i offended you with that message um i was trying to be funny i didn't think i didn't if i offended you it was a really sweet message i'm really sorry if i offended i didn't mean to you one of my favorite comedians yeah and i'd be gutted if you took it the wrong way and then i just said don't worry about it because don't worry this happens like daily to me yeah but but well it's interesting that right because when i first saw the comment i just thought that's somebody that doesn't like me when i read when i read that comment i thought somebody that doesn't like me and wants to have a dig at me so they've stuck this thing so even though it was a joke i thought it was like a mean-spirited joke it's like a somebody hates me this guy looks like this is rama shranga's brother right and then when i read the message he was so sweet and lovely and was a fan and then I thought there's so many comments that you read that you go this person hates me and actually that's not what's going on obviously what I don't want to do is every single person that comments about me go can I just I'd just love to get some background and some clarity on this but it's mad isn't it?

19:46Well I had one the other day by this guy and it was like he'd done it at three in the morning and it was that's always a good sign by the way and it was one of the videos we put up for this and he went scum, you're fucking scum. He wrote like that basically. And then tagged me. Anything that was on my stories that day, he just wrote scum. So I just replied, oh you're a fucking idiot. And then he lent me this really long message just, you know, that he'd been in a really dark place. He apologized. Similar. Yeah. I feel really bad. You know, I like your stuff. You know, da da da. What had you said that made him say that?

20:23What was the clip? Do you remember? I can't remember what the clip was. But he was very, it was very like i don't know if there's something else going on he was very angry do you mean and then then i was like and he was like i'm really i was like bro like whatever do you mean like he's i don't remember sending that i've been a bit of a bad place and i'm not gonna get into the personal sort of side of this for him but you know when you're like you look at that and you think oh he's just had a reaction to something he's seen animosity and anger is the way that he's dealt with it and if i'm honest with you i was like i woke up to that and it's like i'm getting ready to go to school when someone's calling you a scum, scum.

20:55And you're like, so I'm like, you're a fucking idiot. Yeah. I'm like, because I'm like, it's...

21:01Romesh Ranganathan:Well, you don't know the context that were being sent to you, so then you're like, fuck you, basically. Yeah, but also I'm like, if someone said something that you can, you know, that's banter or something that can be misconstrued, it's very hard to misconstrue being called scum or a scumbag. So anyway, and then, you know, so then I was like, look, man, I still messaged you. I was like, I'm sorry to tell you you've been through a bad time, but so you know this stuff everything resonates everything has a will has to be culpable stuff you know i mean people say stuff and it can be misconstrued that's the danger of the world we live in now with social media i know we go on about this and people talk about all the time but it's destructive it's a really destructive tool to be to to constantly even when things you get nice things they could you can misconstrue that or you can overly inflate your own ego or whatever it's a very dangerous tool to have and and i think and the weirdest one i think actually see now and you know i know it's like a great you know the age limit being changed um for social media users i do think we had to come into a place where you go with social media that actually when you join i think like like a passport or anything you have to go this is me because the amount of times now bots and stuff and you really you see stuff funneled in people can say quite dark stuff i've had some people like you know where you cross a line and you think oh well no this isn't you know the scum one was one thing but i've had stuff where you're like oh this is this is just a really dark threatening stuff and this person has put themselves behind a sense of your firewall where they're not culpable for anything but that that stuff has you know you know for me or forever whoever gets sent this stuff and that's not just about where we're in the public eye that's about people in everyday life who have people animosity or threats or any kind of fucking weird sexual deviant that and those people aren't culpable for that and i think there's got to be a time i don't know we've gone on this is a rant but there has to be a thing no no but we're we're we're picking that up and and yeah uh no i totally agree with you i think like you know people send these comments and they think that people the people that they're tagging or whatever aren't i mean that guy that i'm talking about he thought he was making a funny joke yeah right so i'm not really this is not the same thing but i think people like think that the human's not seeing it or the other thing is i think you're probably not looking at it yourself because they think you've probably got a team that's looking at that stuff right and and and they don't realize what they're doing and also like you said they don't think they just don't think there's any real ramifications it's like i'm pissed off about this you said something i don't like so you're scum it happens a lot you know i've i've had like more than one death threat because there's some joke i've said yeah you know I remember talking about on Ranganation, I talked about the Black Lives Matter stuff.

23:42Romesh Ranganathan:And I talked about people that were sort of countering that and what I thought of that. And this guy said, message me. And he said, I'm going to find out where you live and I'm going to end your life for the stuff you said. Like proper like mad shit. And then I looked on his profile and he's like a fucking family man. Do you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. It's wild. But then also, that is the thing of like, how many people like that. when I read those and you look into someone or you just look at their profile and you go, what the fuck is that about? That's so angry. And you look at their, and seemingly they're in quite a normal life or they've got like, you know, pictures of them and their cats or their dogs and you're like, but what is the anger?

24:22And this is the mad thing, right? I don't know why I've just started. Have you seen The Mother of All Conjured? No. Oh my God. The best, it's on iPlayer. It's the best documentary I've watched in five years. Asian provocateur that was an documentary that was an amazing show this is incredible I can't it's one of the best fucking things I've seen so me and Catherine my mum and dad watched it and my mum was like oh you have to watch this it's incredible and I was like okay cool so we sat down on Monday night to go alright let's just have a little don't read too much because it's like because it will ruin it for you going blind so we were like I sit down Monday we put Grace to bed we have our dinner together sit down at eight o 'clock and I was like, let's just watch an episode tonight and we can watch it through the week.

25:09We watched all three hours, like back to back. We were just completely, I've not had that for a documentary for years. We were like, this is fucking incredible. And it's so fucking weird and so dark. And it's brilliantly made. It's like so fucking good. You have to watch this. And then we'll talk about it.

25:27Romesh Ranganathan:Okay. Look forward to, something for you to look forward to, guys. Yeah. I was talking about that. Yeah. People get in touch if you've seen it. I think, amazing. one thing I'd like to share with you before we end the episode I do a really weird bum but my hips age man the hips are just brutalizing me I have actually I have been trying to I've been hitting the gym a bit yeah yeah yeah you know what your forums are looking bigger oh thanks yeah unfortunately I'm also getting older yeah i overdid it on the old leg press yeah i've done something to my sciatic nerve what you lower back no like along the i think it's up the side of my leg i cannot believe how it's just embarrassing i find i just i'm limping around i'm finding it painful to have a shit getting into getting in and out of bed i can't do without making a noise now it's not getting any better.

26:31Romesh Ranganathan:It's just embarrassing. I took it for granted. You could do exercise and it wouldn't have a long time. We've all done it. There's another thing. Yeah, mate, it's the savage. Some of those ages. By the way, I was watching a thing and Stan, the man, was telling me that at our age, the three or four sets of ten, twelve, is not the way to go. What's the way to go? Two sets to your max. Do two sets two sets of your max weight see as far as you can go whether that's 6 to 10 or whatever and then go 20 % down in weights and then do the same thing that's four sets you're talking about now no no no you do two so you go one set of your max weight so I don't know whatever the maximum is on the machine whatever the biggest dumbbells so when you're doing your arm curls when you're doing your hammer curls you're doing like 50kg so you do six and then you drop it by 20 % which you're a mathematician 40kg so you go to the 40kg after and you do as many as you can and then that's a way of getting better for muscle apparently is that what you've been doing?

27:46yeah a little bit

27:46Romesh Ranganathan:you're best friends with a PT, it's quite useful isn't it? yeah he's very good as well he probably wouldn't take much pride in that the way I look with my top off what do you mean you look great? You look fucking wonderful. You do what you look like. You're ready to move into your house in Florida. Yeah. In Cocoon. The old man in Cocoon. Oh, you see there's a younger man who just moved in? Tall feller. Must be about 55. Bit of a young and some fresh meat done moved in. He must be old. He got himself a world cutting on in 94, Capo. Looking forward to being all over that. Like biscuits on gravy.

28:30Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, Tom, it's about that time. Dalton Cruey was a young boy who had aspirations of incredible things. When people would turn to Dalton Cruey and say, Dalton, what do you want to do? He's like, I want to be an astronaut. I want to fly to the moon. Everyone said, Dalton Cruey, you have got some dreams, son, but dreams are above your expectations. But Dalton never, ever wanted to give up on his dream. So when he left school, he'd hang around NASA and all the other space places. And people would turn around and say, what are you doing here, son? And Dalton crew would be, I want to be an astronaut.

29:07I want to go to the moon. And they were like, you don't just become an astronaut overnight. So Dalton got himself a job cleaning at NASA. And he cleaned for all the astronauts. And he helped feed the dogs and the monkeys that would go up in the spaceship. And he turned to the monkeys. And the monkeys would be leaping about. and he was like, how come that damn monkey going to space but I can't? And then, well, Dawton Croy, you're going to be just about as stupid as a monkey if you think we're going to send you up in a spaceship. Dawton Croy is heartbroken by this. Slowly but surely, Dawton Croy stopped dreaming about going to the moon.

29:42People asked what Dawton Croy wanted out of life after that, and he said, car, it would sure be great to see the Mets win the World Series. Aspiration started to fade away too. And before he knew it, Do you want to agree with us? He was just a cleaner at NASA. And when people asked about what he wanted to do in the future, he was like, well, I'm just about lucky enough to get this job. And then came a shiny day. One of the astronauts flying to the moon.

30:08Romesh Ranganathan:Looking forward to this tour. In a group of six, got a tummy bug. Everyone was turning around going, we need six people to fly this goddamn spaceship up to the moon. Everyone was like, we ain't got no six men around. Nobody knows enough about spaceships. And Dalton Cray said, I know about spaceships. Goddamn hell, heck, I cleaned them every day for the last 25 years. Everyone started laughing. Someone said, oh, God, Dalton, you got to be about as stupid as a monkey. Think we're going to send you up to space? And Dalton said, I ain't as stupid as a monkey, but goddamn, I know how to clean a spaceship.

30:45So that guy stole a spacesuit and a helmet. And he said, well, on your head be it. And all the astronauts went, God, you're not going to send up Don. He's just a cleaner. But halfway up to the moon, things were really messy. And people were like, God damn, where's that goddamn cleaner? I said, ain't you seen? He's at the front of the spaceship flying it. Jesus Christ. And they went, what do you mean? It's like, he knew how to fly in it. He knew how to fly the spaceship. turns out every day that Dalton had been there he'd been watching the monkey he'd been watching the astronauts who did their thing actually the I'm gonna change that on the way out to the moon the the spaceship couldn't be cleaner everyone was like darling you're doing a hell of a job but you're just a cleaner boy you're just a goddamn cleaner on the way back to earth all of the astronauts got diarrhea there was a tummy bug that had sort of like slowly gone around, all apart from Dalton, who didn't eat at the staff canteen because he wasn't allowed.

31:54As they were flying back, someone was like, God damn, my ass is eating itself. And someone else was like, I'm going to die from this. I surely am. Who's going to drive the spaceship? And Dalton turned around and said, I'll drive it. And they said, how do you know how to drive a spaceship? And he said, well, I spent the last 25 years here watching goddamn monkeys drive a spaceship. and people say I'm as stupid as a monkey, but I can fly a spaceship like one. And when that spaceship came into land, everyone started cheering, as we all do in spaceships land. Everyone's like, that got to be the best landing we've ever seen.

32:29And the spacemen all came off, and they're like holding their tummies. Oh, God. And they're like, who landed it? That was perfect. And their little voice said, I did. Never give up on your dreams. And that is the story of Dawn Creepy. NASA

32:44Romesh Ranganathan:really good I mean NASA are all exclusively recruiting from one very small area in the south of America and Tom you sort of highlighted the fact that you think the monkeys that went up to space were actually piloting the craft
