In short
The episode is an email special covering three main topics: parenting advice after a 15-year-old’s “perfect crime” (stoned/vaping/magic mushrooms while using a phone power-down and an AirTag to evade tracking), weird food combos/snacks (marmite + peanut butter; crisp sandwiches with HP sauce and crisps; Heinz tomato soup with Wotsits, including “giant” Wotsits; debate about fancy soup and dinner-party starters), and advice for a new uni graduate living alone who feels lonely and has FOMO (“devil’s lettuce” mentioned as marijuana).
Guests
Wolf and Al (hosts).
Guest backgrounds
none besides their roles as co-hosts; they share personal anecdotes (one admits past stoning and cake-eating; they discuss stand-up/acting touring and being alone).

You've really got some. Your shoulders are really... What? They've come alive. I've never seen you use your shoulders so much. I don't know why I've done that. This is where we answer your questions or queries or simple discussion points. Let's start with our first one, shall we, Tom? Shall we get straight into it? Yeah, let's do it, my friend. Okay. Wolf and Al, hi! Loving. What did you do that for? Loving the podcast. Although I had to turn it off on the plane recently as I was getting funny looks as I giggled and snorted to the discussion on Tom's leather trousers.
0:59Romesh Ranganathan:Now, I need some parenting advice. I have a 15-year-old son who is smart and athletic, which he gets from his mum, and the traits he has gained from me are mainly around deceit and misbehaving. He originally came home and he was clearly stoned. This wasn't a shock as he'd been going to the park. Someone likes Adobe. This wasn't a shock as he'd been going... This could be quite a serious query. This wasn't a shock as he'd been going to the park with his friends to play football. And this was the same story I used when I was 15 on fine places to smoke and drink. On this occasion, he tried to pull off the perfect crime.
1:29Romesh Ranganathan:He left for the day to go to a basketball club that he's been to many times. So he couldn't be tracked via air tags or phones. He then went to basketball and left his rucksack there with his air tag in. He then powered down his phone and left for the day to be with some friends. This entailed vaping and having magic mushrooms. Holy fuck. He then had to collect his bag and air tag and return home. The only flaw in his plan was his return home. And getting past a father who had done many similar things, he could quickly tell he wasn't quite himself. Okay. So, should the next steps be A, punishment by grounding and removing phone technology so you focus on schoolwork, or B, rewarding for his ingenuity and planning so in the future he can pull off complex deep cover operations?
2:04Romesh Ranganathan:Appreciate your views and look forward to the Wolf and Ale nightclub. The lanky beanpole. This is a doozy. Okay. Because I think we're all this kid at some point. Were we? Yeah, I mean. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I once went out about 15, got completely stoned. Yeah. came home my mum had baked a cake yeah she said help yourself to a slice if you want I went and had a slice then I went and had another slice anyway long story short I went to the kitchen I'd eaten the entire cake Jesus yeah bad I was terrible for going out and drinking and yeah I used to do a thing where my dad would like on his way to work drop me at like college or whatever or drop me to something or some sort of fucking thing why has your register changed a little bit you've gone a little bit uh like whimsical i just sort of i don't know because i was thinking about being stoned and uh he quite often then just see me in sutton town center a couple of hours later just getting like you know weather spoons or something as he'd go past or sometimes he'd literally be driving i'll be coming out of sutton station yeah anyhow can we just say on behalf of the podcast don't do drugs no no um i weirdly think this is i actually think the biggest problem with this one is the air like the air tag and phone i think it's like that you you've almost got to be like look i know this shit's happening within a situation like this i'd be i think you gotta be honest that you were like that but i think also it's like saying switching off your phone and leaving your air tag someone and then taking yourself into a situation like this where i don't know where you are it's the most dangerous thing to do in a way you'll leave you're unlocatable and then you're getting high yeah and we obviously didn't have phones or air it's like just saying look if you're going to do this i'll tell you what we did have though a damn good time you look so old when you said that you know who reminded me of will smith's uncle in uh uncle phil yeah we've got uncle phil you've got uncle phil was actually younger than us when he filmed uncle phil was so cool yeah you know when um fresh Prince used to slip into like real emotive stuff yeah man he got you didn't it why don't he want me yeah episode yeah oh man great show right what was it what was it on what was on BBC two then you know what's weird is when we started the podcast you were Colton and now you've become Uncle Phil whereas you've not aged have you Peter Pan when you go fuck yourself I'm not Will Smith don't say that who's will smith's mate jazzy jazzy jeff yeah yeah who's will smith's mate only one of the greatest djs of all time jazzy jeff put some fucking respect on his yeah but i couldn't remember what's his character's name in it jazz jazz that's it yeah they did a special handshake yeah yeah you'd probably be will smith i'd be jazz then it would be will smith do you think you would be carlton yeah yeah beckett would be will smith yeah yeah you'd be ashley lashley who do you think you'd have been saved by the bell screech no I don't think you'd be is it Zach the cool kid the lead yeah Zach and then is it AJ so anyway I think in this situation I mean you've got a boy about this age right yeah but I think in my head I think you've got to have this honest open conversation say look I know this is happening I've been there probably not trying to lean too much into cool dad but just so So, see you've been on the old mushrooms.
5:35Romesh Ranganathan:Listen to me. You're probably sitting there thinking, this old man doesn't have a clue what I've been up to. Let me do something. When I was a kid, I dabbled with a few things myself. Let me tell you, Theo, mate. Theo, listen. Your dad used to get high, right? Don't tell your mum. I used to like him, mate. I should get high as fuck.
6:03Alright dad, yeah, yeah, no mate, no, no, no, listen, serious talk, I should get high, but I can't have you coming and getting high and then coming in and turning your apple tag off boy. Alright, so,
6:17I think the fact is, I think, yeah, you gotta, I think that's the thing, my worry would be, I don't know where you are and I need to know where you are and if you're gonna go and do this stuff, this craziness, yeah, and you know
6:28Romesh Ranganathan:throw a little bit of my one yeah I think that's the thing I think I mean look I've got a long way to go to that Theo's a steady lad don't he yeah I don't know but I think if that happened with the boys I would I mean I certainly wouldn't I mean I'm assuming he's joking about the praise the ingenuity of the yeah I think that's obviously a joke but I think that I think it's probably have an open conversation because I think part of the problem is that kids don't think you understand what they're up to at all. I think you find I do. But what I mean is, is you've got to... You know what the other boys used to call me?
7:06Romesh Ranganathan:Wavy. The wavemeister. The surfer.
7:13Romesh Ranganathan:Do you know, sometimes it's difficult for me to make a comment because I think that is so close to how I would... Do you know what I mean? It is actually weirdly not that far away from how I would be. so I find that difficult to navigate because if you're doing something that's so far removed I go come on mate but actually I'm thinking yeah that doesn't sound I mean he's done a slightly different voice but that feels like the tone that I would take I think you just have to have an open chat don't you yeah I think can you imagine everybody going surfing do you know what this is it's called a bong son you know what this is a character I'd like to see you play I'll tell you what give me a tenner I'll drink some of the water from the bottom that's what I used to do when I was a kid tell you what give me a scar I'll drink some bong water and some piss
8:03everyone used to say oh yeah he's got some money one will do it
8:06Romesh Ranganathan:now I'm sure you've been doing all your bongs and your bun in your zoots or whatever you get up to but here's a little thing that we used to do a little bit of beer in the bong you ever seen Jackass boy we call that a spicy you ever seen jackass boy you ever seen some of the stuff they do in jackass well let's just say some of that was based on your old man you used to get a funnel three cans of white lightning pour it into your own cavity
8:39yeah I think it is the thing of having that honest discussion and I think it's just like look just do it responsibly do it safe
8:45Romesh Ranganathan:yeah do it safe yeah also where they're getting shit these days what oh yeah just making sure yeah yeah I think you've got It feels weird to say if you're going to do drugs, can you keep the apple tag on? But that's kind of the gist of it, isn't it? Yeah, if you're going to beat it. And also, enjoy your basketball still. Yeah, absolutely. Because I'll tell you what. There's not just one way to get high. Yeah, because I'll tell you what. You can get high all your life. But basketball, once you get to a certain age, I'd love to go back and play basketball club. You don't need basketball anymore, but does he get high?
9:17Oh, yeah, I get high all the time. I love getting high. Okay. I think there's some advice in there. Yeah, good luck, Lanky Beanpole. Right, Tom. Hi, Tom and Rob. Love the podcast. Yeehaw! Let both of you work. I'm actually going to see Tom soon, and I'll... Oh, it'll be my first comedy show I've ever been to. Oh, there you go. Suddenly he said there's an opportunity for some promo, and he's gone all serious. Yeah, I'm hoping Newcastle's still struggling to sell tickets there. I'm buzzing. Big fan of Murder and Successful. Anyway, sorry to Glaze. That's okay. I didn't really feel that. Oh, that's right.
9:51you didn't mention me at all and carry on on your opinion something I love a good snack just a cheeky sandwich a little cake or something like that one of my sandwiches if you can call it sandwich it's two bits of bread with butter on each but each piece and I squirt some HP on the bread spread it around and I slap the bread together and chow down I even amper up by putting crisps in a crisp sandwich yeah something to become clear eyes at Tom fat man who are gone I've been called an utter weirdo for having such a thing but i'm pretty sure a lot of people eat strange concoctions of food they've put together and they're just too ashamed to talk about it would love to get both your opinions on strange things you guys eat and maybe you haven't told anyone about thank you for all
10:32Romesh Ranganathan:the laughs the loud limer lemur okay um loud limer thanks for email fuck you for not mentioning me you piece of shit. I actually was a subject of a little bit of a what's wrong with you? It's just your face. It's how needy we both are. People know how pathetic we both are. So usually even if they'll go oh Rob I love this I love the weakest thing and Tom yeah I've just become aware of your stuff. Yeah well this person hasn't bothered. No no no that is the first time that no one's mentioned either of us. What do we know I mentioned either he's coming to see you. No yeah yeah hopefully yeah I mean that's nice that's good.
11:10Romesh Ranganathan:your face um right but so basically i was doing some interview i can't remember what it was but i said that somewhere some i don't remember some when somewhere i have said that i like marmite and peanut butter mixed together which is true i think you said it on here it does that on here okay so then there was some video some and some people had taken quotes from different celebs or whatever and decided to try these combinations. And I can't remember what the others were but somebody sent it to me and said, like you've been mentioned here and they tried Marmite and peanut butter and then they sort of rinsed it.
11:46Romesh Ranganathan:They just thought, I don't really like this or whatever. I can't see why that wouldn't work. I don't see, they were going, it's claggy but it's peanut butter. They're too fucking, you couldn't get two more claggy things. But you know, you're like clag king. Peanut butter, Marmite, banana. Yeah, that's great. delightful. Can I just say, by the way, peanut butter and marmite isn't even a wild swing. No. That's a really great concussion. I don't actually think a crisp sandwich is a wild swing. Can I say, crisp sandwich is pretty much, I don't know anyone who hasn't had a crisp sandwich. It's not actually, I think, I'm surprised that anybody has a reaction to that, to be honest with you.
12:18Romesh Ranganathan:HP, crisps and two bits of bread. Yeah. I don't get, I mean, I'd be honest with you, the biggest surprise is that you're bothering to butter the bread. No, no, mate, crisp, just a buttered crisp sandwich. HP, crisps. Oh, mate, buttered butter makes everything better you you don't know that because you're not in the butter game you know you've got that vegan spread which is nowhere near they can't sure the salty butter salty crisps cheap white loaf yeah a little bit of hp in the mix oh gosh really yeah yeah i'll tell you now i'd actually go further and get a bit of a bit of cheese but ham and french cheese ham crisps butter yeah hp yeah bread yeah uh i'm probably the thing i'm known most for is no matter what else i've done is the heinz tomato soup with uh what's this yeah that's that's my that's your that would be your legacy i think that is yeah that's the thing if i'm going to leave anything behind i think and i hope people have tried it it's incredible you can have what it's going to know why because i've got cheese in yeah but it's fake cheese isn't it i think it's going real no no well there probably are vegan what's this well if they can get vegan what's it's i'd love to see your face when you try that for the first time what what happens to the what's They go soggy.
13:30They are incredible. You've got to leave them. Some people go in too high. They're just Watsits. That means you've not played the game properly. You know what's great is if you get them at the top, they're crispy at the top and soggy underneath. Would you ever use a giant Watsit? Yeah, I have them.
13:45Romesh Ranganathan:Can I just say, at this point, I think you're being a bit closed off to other soup brands. I've tried it with other soups. There must be a soup that's going to Toby Kynes. I've tried it with TESCO Zone. Well, there must be some fancy one. No, the fancier, the worse. Okay. Can I say, by the way, soup, when it gets fancy, fuck off. Like, soup should be, like, I think it's like... About 20 years ago, somebody... I went to a dinner party. Yeah. And somebody had made Jamie Oliver recipe tomato soup and brought it. Everybody's bringing a course. Best tomato soup I've ever had. What are you getting on that for?
14:26Well, because that's a fucking bit of a... someone's been asked to make a starter and they made tomato soup yeah by the way i bet it came out of a tin no it didn't what so they made it with real tomatoes i think so all right that can i just say that person not a bit of me why i just i just think that they could have made
14:41Romesh Ranganathan:anything for a starter i think i think they'd agreed in advance what they were going to have i i by the way this is 20 years ago this person's getting roasted a little bit like the tomatoes i believe she did to break them down yeah well yeah you roast them let's get the skins off yeah a little bit vulnerable. So you think this person's a piece of shit for bringing tomato soup? And it was the best tomato soup I've ever had. Yeah, but have you had Heinz tomato soup? Yeah, I've had Heinz tomato soup. I think Heinz tomato soup is the best tomato soup in the world. Okay. I'm just shouting it out. I think it's incredible.
15:11And also... So you've tried Baxter's? What else have you tried? All of the own brands. I've tried the high-end, like, you know, ones that come in the plastic tub. Those ones. You know, homemade, I've never tried. I have made homemade tomato soup. so you're also a piece of shit yeah no no no I wouldn't never take it to no my point is I wouldn't take it to a dinner party right if you called me up and went hey mate it's me why are you talking so loud I'm excited me and Lisa are having a dinner party everyone's doing a different course Beckett's doing the main course Josh is doing the desserts we put you in for starter I'm like okay right how do I impress everyone so what would you make I probably would go oh man it's tough actually I'd probably go for a cheese souffle for the for the like everyone else normal people yeah just say and then for you well I need that tomato soup I'd probably make use of tomato soup so you would bring a tomato soup no I was joking I was being
16:09Romesh Ranganathan:but if somebody brought a cheese souffle as a starter I would just say no I'd have to no but you just sort of go do you want to fucking relax what are you doing you try my cheese souffle I'm sure it's delightful but isn't it a bit thirsty isn't it no I'd get there and go hey Lisa how you doing you alright hey babe um Ron what are you up to what do you think I'm up to I'm in charge of the vino hooray um right John don't encourage us and I'll go can I use the oven right because this has to come out of the oven it has to be hot yeah obviously Beckett's in doing the main course he's done a casserole Josh has probably done a float in Ireland oh fucking we had these in Paris I mean so so yeah I find it so funny looking at your face.
16:57It's basically laughing. But anyway, what I'm saying is a tomato soup just feels like an easy win.
17:01Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. So you get the tomato soup, it has to be high and stick it in the microwave. Do it a little bit over there a lot of time so you get that film around the top of the bowl. The sort of the edge. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it burns, you know. Then put your wotsits in. Leave it three to five minutes. Okay. Some of the wotsits let them sink in. How many, are you putting a whole bag? No, I'll put half a bag. And then what I do is once I've eaten those I'll then re-whatsit. You re-top up. Okay, good. But let me say giant watsits, get the spicy giant watsits. They're really amicable. I mean, even the misuse of that is incorrect.
17:37It's beautiful with the chilli. But chilli and cheese together. Yeah. If you've got the budget.
17:41Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. Yeah. If you've got the budget for what's essentially very much a council estate meal. Yeah. Yeah. It's delicious. So yeah, I'd say that's a really, give that a try yeah give it a try there you go hope that helps good luck to you dear wolf owl and coyote wee wee the coyote yeah look at that I've recently left uni gone straight into a job completely changing the structure of my life I moved out of my uni house and now find myself living alone for the first time I still see mates and I'm lucky to have a strong support network however for the first time ever I find myself alone for evenings with nothing to do how have you guys learnt to enjoy your own company enjoy being by yourself unless i get myself out of the house or going to have to do something with a mate i find myself feeling very lonely listless and bored especially on weekend nights i go to bed feeling like i've sort of wasted the evening feeling lonely or hankering for a bit of the devil's lettuce there's almost something to do i know this is something everyone has to learn but i was just hoping for your advice on how you went about it hmm what is the devil's lettuce marijuana okay i think anyway go on what would you do what's your advice sorry firstly i I think you're young.
18:51Correct. So I think there's a lot to be said about feeling that you are, the world is moving quicker than it actually is. I think once you get to our age, it starts moving quick. I think when I take myself back to being that age, I think I was very similar. I always want to be around people. I was like that until about 30 probably, early 30s. And then I was seeing a girl and she said to me, you can't be on your own, can you? and I was like what do you mean she was like if we were I was living with her at the time she was like but if she's out doing something you can't just sit you know you have to be around people even if it's just going to the pub and you're only meeting people you have you constantly you need other people um you know whether that's FOMO or whatever it was and from there I started to look at that as a thing and I think one of the best things that stand-up did because you travel a lot you're on your own a lot when you first start and you tend to spend one more time on your own um and then actually just reading about the fact that the need for other people's company like try and especially can and i think one of the things kind of makes that difficult i think as life goes on and you're set on your own you can you can go into two two ways of being you can go into where you're at the moment where you're like thinking about that being a negative or or, you know, especially when you've lived a bit of a life and you sit there and, you know, you can sometimes get into a bit of a down space, which even now I do.
20:22I think when you have got that time on your own, I think it's try to sort of, just try to work ways of enjoying it, try to have things that you do, cook yourself a nice meal, as silly as that sounds. So you're doing something where you feel like, you know, you're learning something or you're growing or, you know, or watch a series on your own or go out on your own, to go to the cinema on your own, go for a meal. That's the one thing that being away as a, even, you know, you're on jobs as a scapula, but acting or whatever, and sometimes you'd be in a cast where you don't really know anyone and you spend quite a lot of time on your own.
20:57And actually, I quite enjoy that time now. I try to, you read, you know, whatever. You know, play FIFA quite a lot. But I think actually... Just a bit. Cherish that time. cherish that time rather than feeling negative um about it and um and also just i think sometimes i i you know without sounding uh a bit cliche i could i sometimes found myself in company and a lot of times still do i could be with a lot of people and feel actually almost the loneliest i could feel and i'm like i'm just being in people's company for the sake of being in people's company and actually being around people what i'm actually looking for in a sense and i think actually being a better friend to yourself and getting to know who you are is the the best thing i've ever done is try to have that little bit of time and realize what i actually need from friends so the friends i have now are friends that i hold dear there's not just people i just want to be around people so i'm around anyone the people i choose to be around are people that i enjoy like romesh being around and i think that's the thing you could you can become a place and i spent 15 20 years just being around people for the sake of being around people because i didn't want to be on my own and I think that's that's the skill of it it's just going oh you know you're worthy of being people you know that give you something and nourish you as a person um I um great advice really good
22:21Romesh Ranganathan:thank you sir really good thank you thank you um I don't know if two men in their late 40s should be giving somebody of your age this guy's age advice about what to do but um I think when you're younger you have this thing about like Friday and Saturday nights where you just go i have to be out right like everybody's out and i have to be out and one of the most liberating things you can experience you know it only sort of happened to me when i was a bit older sort of going oh i don't actually have to do that do you mean and then you end up going out because you think that's a default set and i've got to go out i've got to go out i've got to go out and it's just shit a lot of the time and then some and actually what happens is is i think like if you spend some time at home and then you go out because you choose to go out rather than you're supposed to you actually enjoy it a bit more do you know what I mean and and I think that um in terms of like your question actually is about figuring out what to do on your own I feel like you know I I sort of think just I don't know it feels like the obvious things watching stuff reading playing stuff you can still you can still talk to mates even though you're at home on your own more than we could back in the day absolutely absolutely but um I think I think part of the problem you've got is not learning to be on your own.
23:37Romesh Ranganathan:I feel like the problem is you've got crippling FOMO, which is where you think everybody else is out and about having an amazing time and I'm not. And actually, once you sort of free yourself of that belief, then actually you can get on with the business of engaging with your own evening and having a nice time. I think that you can get so caught up in everyone's out and about. And you can be out and about if you want to, but you don't have to be all the time. and I think that's the thing where when you're younger you just think I've got to be out getting smashed or whatever every night and you don't but I did do for a bit and it was a mistake beautiful that's good advice I don't know what you're up to man that's a real snaky little round of applause that's a really good advice I went to do it and what you did really well is you took another touch of the ball and I was like I thought you were going to put the ball through and you held on to it for a little bit of a Maisie Dribble.
24:32Romesh Ranganathan:Thank you so much. That's beautiful. Thank you. Well done. Thanks, mate. That's about all we've got time for.
