In short

Episode topic: Lucy Goff’s fertility journey and building her brand, plus a deep dive on the Lima laser vs red-light panels/masks (penetration depth, gene expression, and “zero-damage” claims).

Guest backgrounds

Lucy Goff is a founder behind Lima. She started the company around age 45, after a serious pregnancy/health crisis (mastitis → cellulitis → septicemia; ICU for six weeks). She later became a Forbes 50 Under 50 recipient and built a team with geneticists, longevity professors, surgeons, and dermatologists.

Key claims

Lima is a clinical-grade, near-infrared laser that penetrates deeper than red-light devices (beyond the dermis), purportedly affecting anti-aging gene expression (45 genes; “CERT1” upregulated six times) without damaging skin. Red-light panels/masks are said to only support superficial mitochondrial glow, not dermal collagen rebuilding. She also argues fear blocks later-life conception and entrepreneurship; “trust your timing” and clear fear from your mind.

Notable examples

Lucy froze embryos earlier; at 48–49 she transferred one embryo after a “<3%” chromosomal-normal expectation and still conceived. She cites using the laser on her knees and a C-section scar with visible fading on the treated side within weeks.

0:46What if you had one more chance with the one that got away? Sam, you came home. Based on the best-selling novel from Carly Fortune. Every year after follows childhood friends Sam and Percy as they reunite in the dreamy, nostalgic lakeside town of Berries Bay. Love can be hard to find. So if you're lucky enough to find that person, never let go. A second chance at first love.

1:10Lucy Goff:Every year after, now streaming only on Prime. I didn't listen to any of the voices. They were saying, you're too old, it's too late, you're silly, it's not going to work. They were telling me that every day. What our studies have shown is that actually when you damage your skin to stimulate collagen production, you actually are creating collagen fibres in the same ratio as scar tissue. I was in ICU for six weeks while they were battling to save my life. Medicine obviously saved my life and I will always be eternally grateful for that, but it came at a cost. I think I didn't listen to any of the voices in my head.

1:48Lucy Goff:What were they saying? They were saying, you're too old. was like everyone else saying you're too old it's too late you're silly it's not gonna work they were telling me that every day but the in your just your mind was telling you that yeah the illness that you went through in that process of you know it's almost like you almost die so you're like i might as well give this life a whirl there was something in the hospital where i was conscious but i kind of wasn't at the same time interesting and i always remember lying there and there were people from what I perceived as the real world coming in.

2:23Lucy Goff:My mum was coming in. The nurses were coming in. These were people that I disassociated myself from when I was lying there thinking I might not make this. Probably when I knew my marriage was broken. There's really hard-hitting truths that just engulf you.

3:41Hi everybody. Welcome to the show. It's Lindsay, Krista, and Fuji. It's Fuji, my kitty. If you like kitties, come watch us on YouTube. I loved and I'm being serious I know people say that I loved this conversation I had so much fun with Lucy like she was a crack up I love British people I love British humor I just find them so amusing and pleasure-filled and we talked about the Lima laser and I was very skeptical because I'm just like you guys we have too many gadgets we have too many gizmos we have red lights I have the mask. I have the panel. Like I have all of this stuff and figuring out that basically the red light devices that I have are great.

4:24They support your mitochondrial health. They do support inflammation. They hit one gene expression of anti-aging, but they're not clinical grade lasers. And so the difference between the red light devices and the Lima laser is that Lima laser is a clinical grade laser. So it's basically like having a doctor's laser in your home and it hits on I think 43 genes that help support anti-aging in your gene expression. And it's like getting doctor level laser at your house. And so it actually does like anti-aging from a level that's not just temporary and it hits below the dermis. So basically the red light penetrates only like one layer deep but it actually hits enough layers deep to penetrate from an anti-aging perspective and from like an actual long-term physical impact.

5:15So it was really helpful to learn about that and understand that about the Lima laser, which I have and I love. And we talked a lot about her fertility journey. She had a baby when she was 49. Amazing. Amazing. She has her daughter and then she has a son, I think, who's younger. So she has, I think, I think at 38, 39, and then 49 is when she had her two kids. Yeah. And she's like, yeah, anyone can do it. Like they told me I had a 3 % chance. and I just knew like I was the three percent chance and I was going to do it and I also don't like three percent I wonder what that stat is based on it's a great point the current health of you know what I mean it's like not be are you basing that on her individual health like she herself has three percent chance so true you know I know I don't know where she's like okay I have a chance like I kind of just didn't let it enter my brain yeah she's like I didn't really allow one of her tips of advice for anyone that wants to conceive a little bit later that has fear was not allowing any of the fear to enter your mind or your brain and really making sure that you're diligent in keeping your mental space clear of fear and of anyone else's kind of thoughts and when you decide you could just decide and then move forward from there yeah yeah that's powerful i've been using the laser um i like burned my belly on a i don't know whatever on a little pot thing because i don't have awareness of my body right now so i've been using it on that and then i've been using it on just like parts of my face that i feel like have like a little bit deeper lines than other parts so like kind of right here on the edge of my forehead and then How long has it been without Botox?

6:58Three and a half years. Wow. And then my left smile line right here is a little deeper because I sleep on that left side. So that's been helpful. Just started using it like a few weeks ago. So I'm excited to just be consistent with it. Your skin looks great. But it's such an easy tool. Like sometimes when you have to get out all the contraptions and whatever, I can bring this with me when I travel. I can like do it easily at night in bed when I'm reading I could just hold it you know it's like it's so easy and just the power of it I'm like I'm doing it on this side smile line too because I have a line here uh-huh I I don't my under eyes because I want to have like a I want this to be smooth instead of like have any breakage and then on my hands and my knees oh yeah oh knees is a big one girl don't even get me started I didn't even know that was a thing until she was on and she was like talking about oh my god look at this before and after i saw that i saw that before and after i didn't know as a woman that you had to worry about knees and during pregnancy i'm like obviously holding more weight i'm like oh the knees we need to glow up for the knees after pregnancy i've been in bed i'm like i do you know i have the i keep the lima in the car sometimes so i'll just kind of do my hands love that and i'll just kind of do my knees but yeah i'm like having because also the hands can reveal yeah having an anti-aging device for your hands is like everything.

8:25But she was so cool. I love the company. I love the brand. I really found the story inspiring. So education on obviously like a tool that's going to help you reduce inflammation with anti-aging, supporting your gene expression of the genes that support anti-aging. And then also for inspiration on a later timeline in life and really understanding that like your timeline can be yours. She started her company when she was 45. She had her first daughter. like she is she's incredible an incredible inspiration i think she was for forbes 50 under 50 um and has a bunch of other awards and recognitions um and lima is just like a really cutting-edge company that has some really powerful science for for y 'all so it is going to be more expensive than other red lights but this is a medical grade device it's not just something that you can like you know you're doing really nilly for like a little bit of a glow um we have a code almost 30 for 10 % off.

9:19So that's a couple hundred dollars off. So you can use your HSA and FSA. So definitely do that. And you can also finance it. So us.lima and it's L-Y-M-A.life and use code almost 30. It's the Lima laser code almost 30 to get one that will last you over 10 years and support you in looking young forever. Having a baby at 48, right? 49. 49. This is gonna be so inspiring for so many women listening. I have so many of my women that I work with and coach are on different timelines for life and they will always send me and I always send to them the articles of women that are in their later 40s that are having children because that's the norm now.

10:02But what was that like for you? Like, were you trying? Like, what was that?

10:06Lucy Goff:I think kind of what is important to remember is it's the norm now to consider having a child in your 40s because the science has moved on that will enable you to do that. But still, you know, if you were trying to conceive naturally age 49, you will be trying a long time. So I think it's important to recognize that. And I think that, you know, we're still trained in our 30s to think the biological clock is like just hurtling towards a brick wall. And we've got to kind of take a beat off to say, you know, yes, every woman has a biological clock. And yes, it is ticking. But the science is there to help me make that a longer window.

10:57Lucy Goff:And yes, there are sadly millions upon millions upon millions of people that have fertility issues. But there's science to help you in some cases. And in other cases, it just takes off that pressure of going to meet the right guy. I've got to have this. I've got to have all my family by the time I'm 37 or by the time I'm 38, because it doesn't have to be like that. And I think that if you take, if you kind of get, feed yourself a different narrative, then it takes a lot of pressure off bad decisions in relationships and thinking, I've just got more time because men don't feel that way. Oh, I know.

11:42Like why? Because honestly, yeah. My guy friends here in Los Angeles are like 37 or 38. They're like, yeah, I'm thinking I'm thinking at 45, I might settle down. Yeah. And I'm like in Ohio, where I'm from at 28, you're like, if you don't have three kids, you're like, what is going on? And women do hold that pressure. And we hold that. It feels unfair that we have to be. You know, that they have the luxury of time.

12:10Lucy Goff:I guess it's only unfair if you tell yourself that, but, you know, kind of, I think that, you know, if you look at fertility as a journey, so if you think, you know, in my 20s and my 30s and my 40s, I'm going to have a fertility journey. and how can I best navigate that? Do I know if I've got any problems myself? Do I know whether my partner has any problems? If so, what can I do to mitigate those problems? Can I freeze my eggs? Can I create embryos early? Can I do all these other things that were not available 30 years ago? And I think just to kind of be strategic in that, it's okay to be strategic with your fertility.

12:58you know if I had not thought about it beforehand then I couldn't have had a child

13:05Lucy Goff:at 49 but you know I had in my marriage I had I had the options I had you know science could help me freeze my eggs it could help me prepare so I had these kind of little people in the freezer to kind of put in whenever I thought was the right moment. And I think that, yeah, you still never know when you're going to put them in, whether it's going to work. And as it happened, I had one embryo and I was 48. And like the woman just said to me, like, I just want to set your expectation because I had three of them, but that two of them were not chromosomally normal. so she said look we're going to put it in it's it's a very very low chance where it's like less than three percent I'm thinking well do you know what like I've still got three I've still got three percent um and I don't know in the back of my mind I didn't want to go there but I just knew I felt it was going to work so what exactly were the steps that you took to have a child at 49?

14:15Lucy Goff:Well, as I say, I froze my embryos a bit earlier. And embryos remind me, embryos are with the sperm and the egg. Yeah. Okay, got it. Yeah. And so the sperm was someone you were with or? Yeah, no. So I was in my marriage and it was something that we both wanted to do. So you froze the embryos with intention of giving yourself spaciousness around it or what was the intention? Well, I'd launched my business and, you know, I was putting everything into that. I was managing um my daughter the business something that i didn't bank on you know i didn't know i was going to launch a business at 45 i didn't know it was gonna um take on in the way that it did when you start out at your kitchen table and you're just like you're just there like you're everything you're the designer you're the customer service you're um every aspect of this business was just me.

15:11Lucy Goff:You're the PR. You're everything. You're accounting. The formula. The customer service. Marketing. Like I always tell my entrepreneur girls that I work with, I'm like, you need to understand that you're learning not one completely new skill set, but like 10. So yeah, when I started, I never set out to launch a business. But when I had my daughter and it all went wrong. I had septicemia. I had preeclampsia. Like the whole thing was just, was just a catalog of, I was not prepared for this and it was all going worse by the minute. I was in ICU for six weeks while they were battling to save my life.

15:54And medicine obviously

15:57Lucy Goff:saved my life and I will always be eternally grateful for that, but it came at a cost. like my body was completely finished I was shaking I couldn't pick my daughter up and it was only when I was I went to Geneva in Switzerland to one of these clinics where they were looking at my blood trying to figure out what was going on and it was there in the clinic that my mum started talking to one of the world's leading longevity professors a guy called Professor Paul Clayton who was there speaking at a conference and he introduced me to a category of supplementation like the hidden category of supplementation like the pharmaceutical equivalent of a supplement and that's what we launched Lima as it was like this formula that he um that he created that looked at three pillars of like um how the symbiotic relationship between sleep skin and stress and how, you know, if you don't sleep, you're stressed.

16:58Lucy Goff:If you're stressed, you don't sleep. You don't sleep. Your skin's not. People that have problems sleeping are like, yes, we know that well. Yeah, we all know that well. They're like, yeah, we know we need to sleep. So we launched Lima as a supplement brand. And it was only when I was thinking, you know, like, what is going to be the next product? And I was like, nothing. We had this whole incredible team of scientists who were trying to come up with what the next Lima product was going to be. And I knew it had to be cosmetic. I knew that. One thing I've been thinking about lately is how many supplements people take every single day without ever questioning whether their body is actually absorbing them.

17:38I recently became hip to this. So we spend so much money on wellness. I'm one of them, but most supplements absorb incredibly poorly, which means a lot of what we're taking may never really get utilized by the body. And that's why I've been really interested in the absorption company. Both Kristen and I love them. They are focused specifically on solving the absorption problem with pharmaceutical grade technology designed to help nutrients absorb dramatically better than standard supplements. So I've especially been loving their magnesium. I am, Kristen, I always recommend magnesium. We're like, that is our number one supplement.

18:14But magnesium supports over 300 functions in the body. Things like sleep, stress, regulation, mood, muscle recovery, but most magnesium supplements absorb really poorly. Their version absorbs eight times better. And I've genuinely noticed a difference and just more support in my evening routine and recovery. I take it right before bed. So they also make products like WLP one for weight management support and berberine for metabolism and blood sugar support, all designed around better absorption and bioavailability. So start taking supplements. your body can actually absorb, go to absorbmore.com and enter the code almost 30 at checkout for up to 35 % off your first order.

18:55That's absorbmore.com and enter the code almost 30 at checkout for 35 % off your first order. A big focus for me this time of year is eating in a way that feels really good, like getting enough protein and enough fiber, making meals that really fit my needs, you know, but still enjoying the foods I actually love. I don't want to restrict. And that's why I've been loving Hero Bread. I was honestly surprised by how soft and fluffy and just yummy it tastes. Breads, wraps, bagels, you know, what I'd normally reach for, but with nutrition built in. I've been using their tortillas for quick lunch wraps and their bagels are amazing when I need something easy.

19:33Mav actually loves them in the morning. And you'd never guess from the taste that their products have as little as zero to five grams of net carbs, zero grams of sugar, and plenty of fiber. It also has protein in some of the products. It's just such an easy swap. And when you want meals, if you're measuring macros like that, meet your macros without feeling restricted. So Hero Bread is offering 10 % off your order. Go to hero.co and use the code A30POD at checkout. That's H-E-R-O.co with the code A30POD. Swear to you, you are going to love it.

20:09Lucy Goff:My favorite are the tortillas and the bagels. And it was only when Paul Clayton was in Germany and he was looking at, he was at this conference of using cold laser to regenerate cartilage inside your knee. And there was this whole team of doctors and they were looking at the x-ray of the cartilage increase over a 12-week period of this 62 year old man and he was at the other end of the room and he was looking at the skin on the knee that had been treated interesting and the skin on the knee looked about 20 years younger than the skin on his other knee and that's when he realized that the entire light beauty device industry was really led and led is like the bulb that's in the ceiling it's there to light up rooms but it's got no biological penetration and he figured if we could re-engineer this huge floor standing hospital machine into like a little portable device with a bigger treatment lens more power then we could change the face of the beauty industry forever because this technology is um it's not even like um other lasers so like you know you go in an office and you have laser treatment you know you can feel it it kills your skin and you know what you need like numbing cream or whatever so all what what those technologies do is they damage your skin in order to stimulate collagen production but all you do when you damage your skin is that your body prioritizes the speed of healing over the quality of the collagen fibers that you produce so what our studies have shown is that actually when you damage your skin to stimulate collagen production you actually are creating collagen fibers in the same ratio as scar tissue and that's why it like feels taut and because you know when you fall over your your body doesn't go oh let's produce a really beautiful scar like it's a very disordered process that happens so this technology is so groundbreaking because it's the world's first zero damage laser and it's the world's first cosmetic technology whereby the light is absorbed by the cell and it just switches it back into youth mode so it makes your skin produce collagen like you did when you were in your early 20s the more collagen you produce the better your tissue is but it doesn't just do your skin it does your muscle as well because the light from this has got a biological potential penetration of nine centimeters so it will regenerate everything in its path your skin and the muscle wow and especially for areas like your jowls and your neck you know your skin is only as good as the muscle that sits beneath so gives the muscle the tautness yeah so it makes your jowls snatch your neck regenerated so there's two threads here and then there's this thread there's the thread of having children later there's a thread of your entrepreneurship journey but I want to continue on this one for now so a lot of the women of our community they're like we have lasers we have our red light devices and honestly when I first got it I was like I have like my red light device.

23:40I have my panel, I have my mask, like what, why would I need this one versus other ones?

23:46Lucy Goff:So the panels are really good to, um, is it like a wall panel? Yeah. So what that does is the light will hit your body and it will stimulate the mitochondria on the very surface of your skin. So it gets more oxygen into your body and you feel good. But it, so that's, that's what, but that's why you feel good when you stand in front of the red light panels. So that's what it does. But the light from those panels can't penetrate down to your dermis, which is the base layer of your skin. So the top layer of your skin, the epidermis, is not the layer of your skin where the skin is rebuilt. That's all in your dermis.

24:30Lucy Goff:The epidermis is more dead and it's the layer that's about to fall off. It's still got a lot of function to it. But in terms of the fibroblasts, which are the energy banks of your skin, they all sit in the dermis. So that can't do anything for your dermis. So it's more of a superficial shift? It can give you an amazing glow. It can make you feel good. But it can't rebuild your skin. It can't produce more collagen in the dermis. It can't make your skin younger. um and then the mark the masks that you wear are exactly the same so they work the same as the panel that's exactly what they do so they can get that's you know they give you a glow they make you feel good um and then you get kind of other at-home lasers they're like non-fracture lasers and you can't feel them much but you can feel them a bit what they're doing is they're heating up the water tissue around your cells.

25:33Lucy Goff:And that heating action creates damage and it creates collagen production. So again, it's not producing collagen like the luna laser. With collagen, I've always wondered this, like, so, because everything's like, we produce collagen, but I'm like, what if your body doesn't have the building blocks of collagen? Like, could you be like, hey, produce collagen and your body actually doesn't have the collagen what sort of things are required for us to have the signal that calls for more collagen there are a lot of different factors there are many many many different it's not so much that it's more how does the cell operate interesting so when you are in your early 20s um it's really like like myself like yourself like i was about 50 years ago

26:24Lucy Goff:basically the reason why the aging process sets in is an epigenetic reason so your body's ability to read your genetic masterboard declines over time so you're born with the same genes that you die with that they don't change but slowly slowly slowly your body's ability to read your genetic masterboard declines and that's why the aging process sets in so some genes your genes are either upregulated or they're down regulated and the idea is in youthful people all the genes that should be upregulated that are associated with really good things are upregulated and all the things that you don't really want to work are down regulated but slowly as you age those genes start switching out of switch and some genes that are associated with really good things start to be down regulated not work and some genes that should be down regulated that are associated with bad things start to work and it's a bit like a piano going slowly out of tune in your early 30s you know like um there might be a couple of notes you might play the piano piece and a couple of notes are out of tune and you don't really notice because you can still play the piece and you wouldn't really notice that because you're just that work you're burnt out you just because you just burnt out because you're addicted to your phone exactly you're too worried about watching you're worried you're investing in celebrity drama you've got a lot going on you're watching netflix you're too what you can't even go to the cinema you're clinically depressed at that point it's all a bit much honestly um but then if you reach like in your early 40s um like it's more like the piano has got half the notes out of tune and that's when the visible aging process really sets in so what this technology does is it switches your genes back into place so it means that the genes that are associated with good things are once again upregulated the genes that are associated with bad things are once again downregulated and that's why you need to use it every day because you're tricking the aging process happening or if you're in your early 30s or your late 20s you can actually stave the aging stave off the aging process setting in by using this technology so if you use it every day in your late 20s or in your 30s you won't age like you would if you hadn't used it.

29:08So just to summarize the basic, the difference between this and like the red light devices, like the panels or the masks is that turns on your mitochondria allows you to have a glow and has like a shorter term benefit than the deeper penetration that can actually change the genetic expression of aging. Yes.

29:27Lucy Goff:Oh my God. You, you were clearly like going to school in your early 30s. You'd be surprised. You'd be surprised what I've learned. Okay. So in this process, I can cosplay as a lot of different things. Let me tell you, I can like, I can surface level talk with pretty much anyone. But it's interesting to me that you chose instead of supplements to do something like this, because it sounds like the supplement that you were thinking about doing would still have a lot of power to help people stress, sleep, and skin. what made you want to pivot to do something like this because it's different to do technology than it is supplementation I think the reason why it really struck a chord with me and I knew that we had to do it because at that time I was 45 and I had age and I knew that whatever I was doing this is for me like this is for me like yeah fundamentally I am the Lima customer and I think I've always had an empathy into yes you know I'm not a you know I realize I've got a life outside of everything and you know there's a whole world out there it's not just all a very self-centric and it's not all about you know it's not all superficial but it's looking at the impact that aging has on a woman or has on a person and how if we lifted that maybe you could achieve more and maybe you'd be more content and maybe you'd be happier.

30:55Um, because let's face it, you know,

30:59Lucy Goff:we can, you can beat around the bush and say, you know, it, it doesn't matter how you look and, you know, in an ideal world, it doesn't matter how you look, but in reality for some people it does. Yeah. I think it's like, you know, that's like love. That's just like kind of the simplification of the platitude of like, love yourself, be comfortable with who you are. Don't care what people think. And in actuality in life, like, of course, that's the goal, but you are going to care and it's, you are going to care because you're human and you've got feelings and that's what makes you different to chat GBT, you know, or, or Claude or, or a robot.

31:39Lucy Goff:We have feelings and they're very, very difficult to manage sometimes. Yeah. You know, they're difficult to sit with and they're difficult to process. And, you know, I think that if you can have a tool that helps navigate that time, then. And it is too about you improving your skin quality and the genetic expression rather than like doing anything else. So it's like supporting your genetics and being younger, but walk me through then. So you're, cause you're 45 when you started this. So there's a lot of women, you know, you're, cause I want to just like double click on that for a little bit of being 49.

32:20When you had a child 45, when you started this company, there's a lot of women right now who are in their late thirties or even twenties that are like, I'm too late. I've missed the boat. I, you know, I can't do what I want to do in life. So can you talk a little bit about like, even from like an inspirational lens about how you were able to still create a life that you loved on a later timeline?

32:43Lucy Goff:I think I didn't listen to any of the voices in my head. What were they saying? They were saying you're too old. It was like everyone else was saying you're too old. It's too late. You're silly. Nobody's gonna, it's not gonna work. They were telling me that every day. But the, your, just your mind was telling you that. Yeah, I wouldn't tell him that. You're like they were. All the bullies in my mind. Go away. Go away. You're like the chorus of bullies. I know. Yeah, no, I do disassociate myself with them. Yeah, that's great. Because I think that you have to. I agree. But I think that, you know, I was looking at the evidence and I think if anything's learned, taught me anything at Lima is looking at evidence and the evidence of what the customers the customer behavior was different it was selling out people were contacting me saying how they were able to sleep again how they felt more balanced how their relationships were better um how they just how their family life kind of transcended through to their family life and when you're hearing all of that you think well I'm not going to do it for myself then I'm going to do it for all of them and that's what kind of that's what kind of um spurred me on I guess to not listen to those voices because the reality is is you know and I think I've I've definitely learned a lot through my daughter you know seeing life through the lens of a child who has not had experience of uh failure of all of the you know kind of will I ever get a job all all of these you know being dumped you know all of these things have not happened to a child um but you know and I think that looking at the looking at life through her and looking at how you know if it doesn't work out they just try it again and they haven't got that negative worry um taught me a lot because i just figured that you know what if there was another way and what if i didn't listen to negativity and what if i just did it what's the worst that could happen is i would end up how i started before i started lima and i was still surviving then yeah do you feel like too that you're the illness that you went through in that process of, you know, it's almost like you almost die.

35:17So you're like, I might as well give this life a whirl.

35:20Lucy Goff:There was something in the hospital where I was conscious, but I kind of wasn't at the same time. And I always remember lying there and there were people from what I perceived as the real world coming in. Like my mom was coming in, the nurses were coming in, like these were people that I disassociated myself from when I was lying there thinking I might not make this wow and I guess I just thought at that point you know I know how fragile life can be and if I never tried then I wouldn't have given that moment justice do you know what i mean i do um and i was i was really scared when i was you know like some people say there's a piece in all of it you know oh my gosh that's so funny i don't know totally like you're like i i went to i went on the other side and i was terrified it was like you know like it's really scary being totally out of control of what for sure a bacteria is doing to you like seeing black travel up your body it's just like it's pretty horrific what so what is the what was the illness that you had um well it was actually um i caught it through breastfeeding well well not through breastfeeding through moustitis okay so i got moustitis first of all and then that turned into cellulitis which i've never heard of but that's a skin infection and then it turned into septicemia what is septicemia it's um like a blood infection so it's when the infection goes from your skin into your blood wow but it was all happening like beneath my boobs so i didn't see it you'd be like your boobs like yeah big one so like i had massive massive i had massive at that point in my life they have gone to nothing now but yeah no it was um it was quite a scary that's terrifying so it's almost like kind of like a near-death moment a little bit that was your it was a near-death moment and I figured you know it's never you're never too in reality you're never too old and it's never too late you know when a child wakes up each day they've forgotten that you told them off the day before or they'd forgotten that their friend fell out with them in the play in the playground the day before because children start each day afresh and there's no reason why an adult can't do that too it's only because we're holding on to this baggage um and often it's just we're holding on to it nobody else is asking us to hold on to it and everyone else has forgotten it just as you forget things with other people but i think it's just so important to release yourself of and really intentionally release yourself of that baggage because it's the baggage that's going to hold you ultimately i know it's a it's a terrible thing to say and i don't mean it like this but um 80 of what we don't achieve in life is just down to ourselves oh i would be surprised if it's more i was trying to just be kind but it's 99 %?

38:49Well, you're the statisticians. You're just dropping stats. What I do know, that is a true statistic. I just made that up. Is 82 % of women hold themselves back from doing, putting themselves out there, starting the business, you know, creating the account because they're afraid of judgment or they are holding themselves because of how they look? I also think there's another

39:10Lucy Goff:thing about women in business so um i think there's something in um you know you sometimes you know you're comparing yourself to men and you have to go to men for funding and before i launched lima i reached out to over 50 vct funds to see if they would fund lima they're all men and they all said no they all said i didn't know what i was talking about um i didn't nobody would pay um you know$150 a month for supplement nobody would pay um two and a half thousand dollars for a clinic grade laser that they could use at home um I didn't know what I was talking about and I think you know you have I think if there was more women in those early stages to support other women to think you can have a family and you can work you know you don't have to make those choices if necessary you know I was bringing my child to work do you know what I mean you can you can still do that you could have both because I was going to ask you too for the women that are you know that have a later timeline where they're like I want to start something I want to do the thing but I'm too old or I've missed it what do you think have been some benefits of starting the company at 45 instead of say 35 how is it I think I'm more mature now I don't think I would have been maturing I think people mature at different rates and you can be a late bloomer or you can you can not be you can be a labor where you can just stay that way forever you could just stay a child honestly my parents um so yeah I think that I wouldn't have had the same maturity um I wouldn't have had the same confidence and I know it's I don't it might not be the right thing to say but I guess like I'm 53 now and I'm more I'm more of the mindset of I want to make each day you know you don't know how many you don't know how long you've got you know what I mean and so I feel this I've got to now get it all in whereas when I was in my early 30s I was still I've got my whole life and yeah I've probably still got the whole life in my head I have to be now but you have like a shift in mindset of I've now got to start fitting everything in.

41:33I'm really doing the thing. It's almost like the perception of your life ending is like the benefits of motivation, but for some people can make them even more fearful where they could be like, oh, sunk cost fallacy. I've already put enough time here, but yours was like, actually, this is motivating me. And I do think a lot of people have to have, that's the beauty of the rock bottom moments of sickness, illness, death, divorce all of that kind of stuff really if you're conscious if you're a conscious person can recalibrate you to a better outcome a better future you really stepping into your power more

42:06Lucy Goff:than ever I think it's like just knowing that even in your darkest moments everybody's got dark moments in their life um you know life is a balance life is you know it will always find it's equilibrium if you've had highs you'll have lows if you have lows you'll have highs but I think it's just about knowing and trusting that the dark periods won't last forever um the sun will will come out maybe I was Annie in my last time tomorrow you're like take this you guys the sun will come out tomorrow um when you were getting all those no's from the VCs for funding, you know, this is what's so crazy is being in this space and talking to entrepreneurs is almost all of them had everyone said no, or they got denied like the office, the US one, I think it was the least rated pilot of NBC of any other pilot.

43:03And I think it was like, no one would want to take the show. And then it becomes, you know, what it is. But a lot of times that happens with people, they get denied funding. They're not, you know, seen at first. What would you say about that process? Like, what was that like to hear all the no's, but still move forward?

43:17Lucy Goff:I think you've just, I think your gut always knows what the right answer is. I think if you, you've got to push away all the noise and actually look within yourself and let the answer come to you and it will come to you. And if you genuinely feel that it is viable, that you have got a chance and people will buy your product, then you've just got to stick to that path. If you know deep down, okay, maybe this is not so viable, maybe it's too much of a risk, your gut will tell you what the answer is. You've got to clear the noise away and allow the proper answer to come through. You know, deep down in my gut, I've known when things are not right, you know, your gut will tell you but you've just got to cite you've got to create the silence around you for for the answer to come i oftentimes think especially with the women that i work with it's like they know the answer they just don't like it or they don't haven't created enough space for it to like have its moment well you can not like the i mean that's i know you can not like the answer we've all had answers where you know we think what was an answer what was like that for you i mean loads of times probably when i knew my marriage was over yeah like there's all there's really hard hitting you know like truths truths that just engulf you um but i think slowly there's this and don't worry i think it's from the art of war that accept what is you know like three words accept what is you know if you're if like god forbid you've like i don't know you've been run over and you're you're lying in the road and your leg's broken you know you don't sit there and think why did this why was i here at this point why did i not uh you know look at out at the road you don't what the first you just call 999 well 911 here you know you call for the ambulance you don't sit there wallowing you call for the ambulance and by the same token in in your life you've got to accept what is and try and accept what is don't don't like spend time wallowing or thinking you can change something because you know you are in control of your life but you are also not in control of many aspects of your life and it's knowing when to when that control is viable or when it's not yeah um there's a book um where's my cheese do you see that book and it's about um when when is the right time to know to give something up oh wow um and it's so it's like i think the whole book's 20 pages oh wow it's um it's like a 20 page book um but it's you know I always go back to that book so many times in Lima I go back to that book thinking like is this the time to let this go wow is is this the end of this period yeah this part of this yeah and I think too you know having the ability to have a truth drop in of like say leave the marriage or not do the thing and having that be okay and knowing that is okay and that you to take action on it.

46:50I think people like don't want to hear any bit of honesty from themselves because they're afraid of what that means. But you can know something and not take action in this moment on it and have it just be. And then also too with those, you know, the VCs, it's like accepting what is, none of them gave you funding. And that doesn't mean that's information, but I'm not going to change the course. I'm not going to do the thing. Like they can have their opinions on this, but I can also have mine and having that confidence in that, which was good. So you basically after the funding, you, then did you start working with the doctor again on the laser?

47:26Did you meet him and see him? Like what was your collaboration to really create this at home clinical blade laser?

47:33Lucy Goff:I started Lima with the doctor that I met in Geneva. Yeah. So he came on board from the beginning. Um, he formulated the supplement and he pulled together this incredible team of scientists there were geneticists longevity professors surgeons dermatologist the whole there was this whole core team and um there was about well if you count them all up there was over 20 of them and they were all looking for what the next product could be and there was one that came back with um an amazing powder that you take you know there was another one that came back with this incredible um i mean it it was an incredible molecule actually that um it was a natural antibiotic uh but it wasn't registered as a food supplement and it wasn't registered as a pharmaceutical molecule so i thought well it's got to be registered it's got to fit under some brackets we didn't do that there was quite a few things that we looked at that we didn't do and then this came back and um I used this device on my knees so my mum has got like the world's worst skin and I got her skin um what does that mean to have bad skin for you well no really it was really really wrinkly like really really wrinkly and my knees i was you know i was in my mid-40s but my knees looked the knees of like a actually i'll show you see the picture on my um let's see your seats of the knees it's it's insane how many things you can be insecure about like i know but these were my knees age 45 wow those are crazy yeah they're crazy knees they're terrible knees thank you mom They make me sick.

49:26Lucy Goff:Yeah, I know. Makes you sick to look at them like, don't be sick. But then 12 weeks later. We'll have to put this on the screen. Yeah. So I use this technology on my knees. And it's weird. 20-year-old knees. 20-year-old knees. 20-year-old knees. For real. It's weird because you can't. In 30 days, you have 20-year-old knees. Well, no, that was 12 weeks. 12 weeks. Yeah. But this is day 30, though. That's crazy. 12 weeks still. It's crazy. 90 days. Yeah. Oh, my God. So, but it's weird because you can't feel it. And it's amazing how your body associate, your brain associates pain with results. That's the biggest facts.

50:05Lucy Goff:And so I was using it. It's almost like you want a little shock. Yeah, you want a little shock. Yeah, that neck. I mean, it's amazing for neck. My neck, again, was just horrific. You've got a top to your neck. Beautiful neck. Well, I'm 53. I mean, it's not perfect, but it's fine. It's incredible. It's fine. So the laser does not only your muscles, but your skin as well and the muscle is a huge component because i do actually agree that i think if we don't have any muscle tone wow that's crazy the eye creeping wow that's what i was really focusing on so i got my laser last week and i've been really doing it here yeah because i really just like oh it's amazing and actually the lima laser is amazing it's got like this lip on the lens and it really massages your eyes very very good for your eyes yeah that's what I want to do because I don't want to get any thing done to my eyes so I was like okay I'm going to go around and around the eyes and then I have a fine line here and a fine line here and so I was just really moving over that and then during this whole podcast I've been doing it on my hands the hands are the hands is blowing my mind because I was thinking about that a giveaway the hands are there are so many giveaways so many giveaways and we are not fooling anybody we are not there's too many giveaways so no it's amazing for your hands it's amazing for I mean if I would have had this in my early 30s I would have um engineered a Lema Laser House.

51:37Lucy Goff:Honestly, I'm ready for the bed. I'm ready for the town. I'm ready to be lasered all the time. So it does wrinkles, pigmentation, skin tightening, scars, neck and gels. Also, I have two scars. And I was like, I'm cruising on the scars. And I was thinking about taking a picture of before and after. And I've, you know, there are two scars that are old. And I'm like, what? Like I had a injury when I was young. And I'm like, I've never been able to do anything with them I've done the silicone I've done the scar cream and I've already noticed them softening and I'm like if this removes my little let me show you another picture let me this I'm going on my phone your little kids in there no this is this is actually look so um look at this so that was a c-section and she used it on half of it and not the other half everyone on YouTube can see this.

52:33Lucy Goff:Do you see? So that was a C-section. She used it on half of the scar. And you can see half of it's still there. So for everyone that's not watching on YouTube, there's two scars. There's an image of a scar on top from a C-section and a scar on bottom. The scar on bottom, she did one side with the laser, one side without. The one side without is brown, discolored. The other is like faded, light pink, almost barely noticeable. And that was only eight weeks later. So she's still not finished. That is incredible. Yeah. So for three minutes a day, for 30 days, people will see. Well, three minutes a day on each section of the scar.

53:17Okay. On each section of the scar. And three minutes, how long would you suggest someone who wants to just kind of reduce fine lines, hyperpigmentation, like what would you say?

53:26Lucy Goff:If you're in your 30s or your late 20s, you can just like glide the laser over your face for like 10 minutes a day. 10 minutes a day. It's fine. That's what I was, you know what I also actually, so when I got mine last week, I put it in my car. So I'm just cruising in my car and like I'm, I'm doing my little laser in my car, which has been so easy, simple. If you're on the back of a cab you know yeah you can put it in your purse yeah and is the thing about it is like it doesn't actually have it's not like a flashlight of the red light it's just like very and it feels the little lip of it feels really soft on your skin the light that you see is just an led to tell you the device is switched on oh interesting so it's near it's a near infrared laser interesting it's completely cold you know you can't feel it at all it's not warm at all and because it's cold it's got no heat and near infrared is invisible to the human eye you'd never know whether the device was switched on or not which is why we had to put a red light that's smart but the red light is literally just an led to say that the device is switched on it's got retina protected technology in the lens so that's why you don't need to wear goggles around it because i was putting it i was like last day i was like directly on my eye so i was like we'll see hopefully it'll hopefully it'll help my help my skin is there any research that you found about this recently that you're really excited about or like you were just like wow that really is groundbreaking yeah so we did something we did a world first clinical core so we had like um to really help explain the difference between led between red light and the lima laser we did a clinical whereby we use the lima laser in above one skin one piece of skin and we looked at gene expression in the dermis so the base layer of the skin and then we got imperial college in london to build an identical lima laser but using an led is a light source not a laser so it's the same wavelength it was near infrared on both 808 nanometers 808 nanometers but one used led as a light source and one used laser obviously laser and in the lima laser 45 genes were expressed in the dermis and the longevity gene which is cert one was expressed six times and that's never been achieved in human skin.

56:02Lucy Goff:Wow. And in the LED equivalent of the Lima laser, so the LED equivalent, only one gene was expressed in the dermis in that skin. And the longevity gene was not expressed at all. And that was because that proved that LED, the light, the biological penetration from led cannot reach your dermis and we had that public we had that clinical published in aesthetic surgery journal last year and that was a world first clinical looking at gene expression in the dermis of the lima laser compared to an identical device of the same power but using led so it's 45 genes were expressed in the Lima laser and one gene was expressed in LED.

56:56Lucy Goff:Wow. And then we followed it up in a clinical setting on looking at diabetic wounds. It was wound healing in diabetic patients. Wow. And it was actually quite good. It was following amputation. It was a terrible, terrible clinical. Very traumatic. and in the lima laser the wound area was reduced 78 percent in the people that received the lima laser and people that received the placebo laser the wounds carried on getting bigger wow so that was a clinical that we're really excited about because it started to explain the difference the led is amazing for the top layer of your skin but not at the base layer and if you want to really prolong yourself from the aging process setting in so if you're in your late 20s or your 30s and you want to prevent the aging process setting in so rapidly then the lima laser is is it and the light will last you 10 years the device will last you 10 years i love how heavy it is i love that it's like honestly don't get close to me what is the difference between what I have right here, my laser that I've been working on my hands this whole time and the one that you have?

58:17Lucy Goff:So the one that you have has got a eight centimeter treatment lens and this has got a 33 centimeter treatment lens. So it means that I can treat larger areas on my face and body faster but if you're in your 30s um or your 20s and you want to use this technology you know you the the laser that you've got is absolutely fine if you're over the age of 40 i'd recommend getting just for a bigger i've been loving using it like just at the end of the day getting my under eyes getting the fine lines getting my hands getting these things that I wouldn't normally and I do like red light but it is really making sense to me that it's only the superficial layer and it's only giving that temporary because I do notice the more I use it the better it looks but it is just like then it'll kind of go back to homeostasis and it'll kind of go back to like what it was before yeah so to have something that's going to continue to build and continue to benefit me because of it reaching the deeper layer and reaching those like other elements is huge and i think honestly for how expensive the led devices are and the red light devices are it's like you have one that's actually doing the thing that we really would want versus the high level well actually now you can get it on it on your hsa fsa no way not from last week that's genius yeah actually all the girlies you get like between 30 and 40 % off.

59:49Wow. Because it's clinical.

59:51Lucy Goff:Yeah. A really healthy diet. Don't get ill. So you need to spend your points. Honestly. Wow. We've gotten installed. We actually, cause we launched our US website. You did. Congratulations. I'm so excited to introduce this to everyone. Um, last question or last two questions. What would be just cause I want to just can, I want to land on this and then I want to go just our last point on the laser. What would be, one thing you would tell to a woman that is in her later 40s that is wanting to conceive? Know what your timeline is for this process. So always give yourself a deadline. Think, I'm going to go through this or I'm going to spend this amount of money and I'm going to have this journey for a certain period of time.

1:00:38Lucy Goff:And it takes the pressure off that cycle. or then if you've decided i'm going to do three cycles of ivf of ivf um and i'm going to give it this time it just kind of takes the pressure off the devastation of if the first cycle doesn't work out so i think yeah i hear you if yourself a timeline yeah if you're going to conceive naturally you know that's that's fine as well but under know what you're going into so and have all the tests to understand your body where it's at because it might be for whatever reason that you know you won't be able to conceive naturally at that point in which case you're best just to kind of go on to a scientific scientific route but you know don't give up don't listen to the stats don't listen to some doctor telling you that you've got a two percent chance of it working because you're going into it with a negative process with a negative mindset you know if you can ask the doctor whether it's viable whether he sees it's viable you don't have to know the percentages of it working out or not because if you fall in that three percent of it it three percent of it working he's still in with a chance um but i think kind of really looking at and really saying i'm gonna go i'm gonna go in with this and i'm gonna give it say two years i'm gonna give it three years i'm gonna give it this amount of money i'm gonna give it this amount of emotional energy it's almost like setting a boundary or container about it setting a boundary and container that's not linked to that next cycle it's actually putting a realistic time frame in um and if you really want something you know just thinking am i going to be better in the long term knowing that i've really tried or am i going to be better and i might be upset at the end of it and I might be disheartened at the end of it or am I gonna or am I gonna look back and wish I'd never tried and I knew for me I had to try and so you've really got to look at it from a personal perspective and think if I look back on it how am I gonna least regret this least regret this process am I gonna regret it more by not trying or am I gonna regret it regret it less by trying knowing that there's still a chance so tell us where we can get this device and for any woman that's on the fence of this what would you say to her for any woman that's on the fence i would always look at the science and there's a load of you know the the market is full of a load of devices and they've all got their you know they've all got their benefits they've all got their limitations um but if you are serious about making your skin younger for the longest amount of period the longest amount of time then this is the device and why because the science tells you that there's nothing like this out there um it's not about damaging your skin that's you know the market has existed for decades on damaging your skin there's all these different devices that do the same thing they all damage your skin in some way but we now know that um you know zero damage is the way to um a better skin and a younger skin yeah that never made sense to me they're like oh we have to like make this a lot worse before it gets better you're like what why is that true so everyone can get their lima i have mine i'm so excited about it i've told you guys i've been using it on my hands i'm gonna check out my knees i don't know what's going on down there but if my knees need a little take a before shot okay well whatever you treat take a before shot i'm gonna do my scars because i have scars i'm like i don't before shot and then take a picture four weeks later i can't wait wow okay i can't wait but actually i think we've got um a promo code which is gonna save them like 200 we don't ever do this we're gonna save over like 200 which is crazy.

Ladies, if you’re worried about your timeline, fertility, or aging…there’s no need to fear anymore.

In this episode, Lucy Goff, founder of LYMA, joins Krista to talk about having a baby at 49, rebuilding her life after a near-death experience, and creating one of the most talked-about wellness brands in the world.

It feels like sitting down with the smartest, coolest older sister who tells you to stop freaking out about your timeline.

Lucy + Krista dive DEEP into fertility pressure, beauty standards, women reinventing themselves later in life, and the reality of building something massive from scratch. Lucy opens up about being told “no” over and over again + why women seriously need to stop acting like life ends at 30.

We also talk about:

Why women hold themselves back from going after what they want

The science behind LYMA + how the laser actually works

The difference between red light therapy vs. clinical-grade lasers

Stress + sleep: how they impact your skin + nervous system

Learning to trust your intuition even when everyone doubts you

Why life doesn’t end at 30—and might actually get better after it
