In short
Bernardo Vasconcelos explains how uncompromising standards, trust, and craftsmanship built his global reputation—from childhood hair entrepreneurship in Brazil to founding BCO Hair and scaling via Instagram and premium client service.
Guest background
Bernardo is a Brazilian hairstylist and founder of Luxury Hair Care brand BCO. He moved from Brazil to Boston (English course/student visa), then New York (blow-dry work), then London (arrived in 2013). He worked in salons, then mobile appointments across London/Paris, then opened his own studio, later serving wealthy and international clients and taking work trips to the Emirates, Doha, and other markets.
Key claims
“True luxury” comes from craftsmanship, relationships, and consistent excellence. Hard work may be “easy” to get but costs more later if standards are skipped. Instagram “made” his career through early posting (no formal strategy). Leadership requires respect and performance; he won’t accept low effort or working-from-home.
Notable examples
learning California highlights from YouTube; a client’s ombré/contouring result that became widely searched on Google/Pinterest; switching from mobile service after repeated client disrespect (rain incident) to a studio; building a team and raising prices when clientele became wealthier.

Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:04Welcome to Beyond Marketing, the podcast. I'm Maira Genovese, the founder and CEO of Amigin Power, a global integrated market agency. Today, I'm joined by someone who has built a global reputation, not simply through talent, but through trust. From starting in Brazil to becoming one of the world's most soft-after hairstylists and the founder of Luxury Hair Care brand BCO, Bernardo Vasconcelos, a wonderful friend, has shown that true luxury is built on craftsmanship, relationships, and consistently delivering excellence. Welcome to Beyond Marketing, the podcast. I love this introduction. So chic.
0:46It's not chic. It's you, baby. This is all your compliments, man. Thank you so much. I was about to say that I always wanted to come here, but I was waiting my turn. And then when she messaged me from someone for your team, I was like, yes, it's time. It's time. There's always the time for everything. But you always be in our... I feel home. It's good. Because you always be on our guest list. Thank you. Because we like to bring people here that can just talk beyond marketing. We love through stories, we write like personal stories, because we as an entrepreneur, as a founder, people only see the glamour, right?
1:27And the success, what people define success. But here we like to bring people that we can talk behind the scenes, beyond marketing. But before we go into more in-deep conversation, who is Bernardo Vasconcelos? Yeah, Bernardo Vasconcelos, it's a guy full of dreams that I knew that I never belonged to the place that I was born. That's number one. And it's someone people manage to trust. And I think I try to bring good energy and positive energy to whoever room I'm into. This is me, hardworking guy. Very hardworking guy. B, your story is fascinating because I've known you for like so, so many years.
2:19How many years have I been in London now? I'm in London 13 years. Yes, 13 years. I've been 20, so I know you when you actually since the beginning. And to follow your trajectory and your journey is very inspirational. It's very fascinating, but it comes with a lot of hardworking, as you said. Oh, yeah. Because in life, we don't get if you don't put the work. and I'm trying to say... I mean, there's a lot of people that they get and they don't put the hard work. It's not fair. Do you think that they don't put the hard work and that they get it? I think they pay a higher price at the end. Okay. They might not put the hard work to get it.
2:56They get it easily, but they pay a higher price afterwards. That's what I see from trust from kids I know. Like these people that we know that they don't do much. They don't do much. They have a lot. They don't know what to do with that. And then they become cuckoo. Yeah. So the price is higher. The price is much higher. At least my brain is good. I'm stressed here and there, roller coaster, but my brain is good. But your brain is good. My heart is good. Your health is good. I sleep very well. Don't take any medicine. That's the best thing in the world. The best. The best. The best. I'm rich. You're rich.
3:27Yes, with the small things. And then like, have you ever imagined the life that you have today when you go back to a childhood in Brazil? So, because I truly believe that our childhood, our experience when you were younger, defined where you're going based on the experience that we live. True. Do you think your childhood, when you think about Brazil and the life that you have today and everything that you have created, developed, conquered, it's something that related you back to your childhood? Yes, I tell you why. since kids since i start remembering my childhood since i was seven and my mom was uh taking care of kids to start with so you understand a little bit of this story she had a little nursery in our house and then uh my father my stepfather told her i think you should do her dressing course because I see you, you know, you do your hair nicely, and I think you should do it.
4:37He paid her the course, and we opened her first salon in the garage. I remember we took some magazines. We cut the pictures of the girls, the models in the magazines. We put on the walls. We took a piece of wood somewhere. We wrote with our hand, unisex haircut, 1.99 reais. So you remember that? Yes. How old you were? I was seven, eight. Wow. Yeah. And then there my mom was doing haircut and nails only. I was going to school alone, seven years old. I imagine because I have a nephew, he's seven. We take him everywhere. I was walking, I don't know, 30 minutes to go to school alone. It's crazy to think about it, right?
5:26Me too. And but since that time, I had. Sure that I worked very hard, make my own money and live a good life. I was helping my mom. I remember I was buying Yakult, the drink in the supermarket and I was selling to the clients in the salon. yes uh i was making cake because i always knew how to cook because i had to to help my mom to take care of my sister so i was making cake selling school so my entrepreneurial side was already developing that yeah um you know in brazil we have uh agencies like um um rental like we need to rent a house, you go to an agency, they give you like a little magazine with a lot of houses for you to buy, for you to rent.
6:21Do you remember that? Yes. A little booklet. I was looking at the houses and I was seeing the most beautiful house and I was saying to myself, one day I'll buy this house. One day I'll live in this place. My house, we lived in a normal neighborhood. Where was it? In San Jose dos Choms. Not in the favela, but not in the richest part, the normal part, studying public school. But my house was the ugliest in the street. In the street. The ugliest house. And I was a bit ashamed of that because my friends had beautiful houses. In the same street, they have nice houses. One of my friends, her mom used to live in Japan, so he had the best toys, everything, nice clothes.
7:03And I was always hanging out with him. It was my best friend, Rafael. But then I was saying to myself since then, this life is not the life I belong to. This is the life I have right now. But I'm going to work hard and I'm going to save money. I'm going to move out of this country. Imagine. Wow. Since eight, nine years old, I was saying to my mom, I want to live in the United States. Because in Brazil, we watch a lot of movies. Movies. It's always in the States. Home Alone and stuff. And it's like, I'm going to live in the USA. say I'm gonna live in America I'm gonna be rich I'm not like how you're gonna move to US like we have no money to to have a car I'm here yeah and so when I was nine ten I decided to help my mom in the salon it was your idea there was all your mom forcing you come and help wait I in the beginning I wanted because I wanted to make some cash but my friends will start laughing at me because whoever works in a hair salon is a gay guy so there was the bullying at the time that we didn't have the word bullying yes wow and of course I was a kid I wasn't out of the closet uh and then I said to my mom I don't want it my my friends are laughing at me I'm And then she let me be for a year.
8:34And then I was going too much to the streets with my friends after school. Okay. And that time, marijuana was showing up. My friends were skateboarding everywhere, staying out until midnight. And then one day, she... Your mom. Uh-huh. And she said, from today, you finished school. I finished school round one, two, straight to the salon. I don't care. But then I'm going to start paying you. And then you're like, ah. Okay, fine. And then I start finishing school one, two, straight to the salon, cooking something because she couldn't cook. I cooked something for me, for her, for my sister, for my stepfather.
9:25And then helping her until midnight. You know the salons in Brazil, they close at midnight. They close at midnight, yeah. 1 a.m., 2 a.m. They close only until the last client goes. Yeah, whatever. You don't have a life. You don't have a life. You don't have a life. You do everything for the clients, which I don't do now. Like, I swap that and I taught my team how to do that as well. Yeah. We talk about that later. And then I started saving money since, I don't know, 10, 12, 14. I started making my English courses. My mom changed from that garage to a bigger place, then to a house. Then she managed to buy her own car.
10:05Then she managed to buy her apartment. My father, my stepfather, also was doing great. So we could elevate our standards. We elevated a little bit, yes. Yeah. And then when I was 17, I was about to finish high school. And I told her, listen, it's time. I'm definitely leaving. And I managed to pay a consortium, I don't know how to say that in English, for a motorbike. So I paid over three, four years. You paid like an installment, like a lease. Like a lease of a motorbike, but I didn't take the motorbike. I just wanted to save the cash. Ah, okay. Yes, in Brazil you can do that. Yeah, so I saved those installments for four years.
10:45I paid my course in Boston. And then I asked my mom to pay for the tickets. And then I said, I'm leaving. And that course in Boston was a course about English course. I just wanted to live there in the U.S. Yeah. And I wanted to study something and be there with a student visa so I could be there for a longer time. So I stayed for one year in Boston. I extended the visa for one more year. I moved to New York and then I started working in a hair salon doing blow dries. Only blow dries. In New York? In New York. I worked in Boston in a friend's salon but for a very short of time. And then how long did you stay in New York?
11:26Almost a year because my visa finished. And then you came to London? Yes. And why did you decide London? I'll tell you. Drink water. Because I didn't know about the New York part. First, I came to Portugal because I had a friend living there. My story goes like this, guys. Be ready. Which is beautiful. Yeah, it's crazy. In Portugal, I managed to find a job in a hair salon. okay and then your mom and your sister they were all in brazil and you only have one sister right sister and three brothers but from your mom and dad four guys so you your sister plus two no no four guys my mom and dad and then she divorced okay and then she moved to sao paulo and then she married again and had my sister the sister that lives here yeah okay got it uh yeah so then And you went to Portugal, but your mom and sisters and brothers always stay in Brazil.
12:23And then I find a job in a hair salon in Portugal. They were very behind the way they do hair. They were doing like rollers for older ladies. They don't do Californian highlights. I already knew how to do Californian highlights in America. And I was working a lot. In Portugal, they charge very little for hair. So for a haircut and blow dry is like 10 euros. 15 euros yes very cheap it's very cheap uh so what i was doing i was working in the salon the whole day after the salon i was cleaning a gym um home's place gym which is like fitness first first year yeah so i was cleaning and then sometimes in the morning i was doing any of my friends here in their house.
13:15So I was working on three jobs. Wow, very hard. No life, amiga. Saving money. No life. Saving money to buy my first apartment. I bought my first apartment, I think I was 19. In Portugal here? In Brazil. In Brazil. But I was, I needed to pay this apart because you know when you have nothing, Mayra? Yes, you just have to work. You have the hunger to have something, to feel like you own something, that you don't need to go back to your rent I remember my mom thinking about how she's going to pay for the electricity. Things like that. Yeah. You know? And you just don't want to leave that. No. The house I told you, the ugliest house in the street, used to rain more inside the house than outside when it rains.
14:00It was crazy. like water everywhere in the sofa on the floor um on top of the um where we cook the the food water in the food disaster so when you have that experience you just don't want to you just want to go back no i until today thank god my my views are all paid on time like i have this trauma trauma of seeing bills everywhere. I don't want to leave that, you know. And still today, I live below my means. I was actually speaking to Gabriela the other day. And I told Gabi, I was the one who come here alone. I worked very hard. You did. And today, my sister lives in a better house. My mom lives in a better apartment.
14:51And I live here, which is a nice apartment. But I could live in a nicer, luxurious apartment. Or drive a nicer car. My car is nice. But I could drive a nicer car. But I still live below my wings. My wings. Which is so beautiful. Until I break through big time. Big time. And then, baby, I'm going to enjoy. You're going to enjoy. I have everything planned. And then we do the second episode. Exactly. I'm very careful with my spending. But then in Portugal, then you stayed how long in Portugal? Less than a year because I said there's no place for me to grow here. I'm working like a cow. I'm making a thousand euros a month.
15:36And then you realize, oh my God, there's a place that's called pounds. Yes, exactly. There's a place that is pounds that values eight times more than the eyes. Look how crazy was that. I bought a ticket to travel Europe for 22 days. It's like a ticket you buy. I don't remember the name. And you take trains all over Europe. And you travel whatever time you buy the ticket for. 22 days I did a trip. Berlin, Madrid, London, Netherlands, Paris. Because I wanted to know Europe. Yeah. When I was in a hostel in Barcelona. I met a bunch of Brazilian. Enjoying the same as me. Like traveling, pub crawling, everything.
16:18And I met this girl called Evelyn. And she used to live in London. And she was an au pair here. And then she said, oh, I like you. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. You do hair nice. I live in London. And you know my boss, she spent so much money doing hair. She paid XYZ for the Brazilian blow dry, blah, blah, blah. Why don't you come to London and try? Then you said, yes. I said, why not? I went back to Lisbon. Pack everything. Arrived in London 2013. One year after the Olympic Games, I remember. I stayed in a hostel in Queensway for two weeks. In a shared room. Paying 15 pounds a day. Wow. Yes. I bought a card.
17:11Went to the public telephone. Called my mom. Mom, I'm here. blah blah blah she didn't even know where is london baby
17:22and then she said oh okay nice blah blah blah blah good luck I miss you so much I'm still crying you should come back home blah blah because when I was about to move out of Brazil she said don't move I'm gonna pay you your university whatever you wanna study and I'm gonna give you a car and when you offer that for 18 years old then of course you get tempted not for me i was like no i want to move abroad and i lived in this hostel for two weeks i bought the journal to look for a job those brazilian journals where you have announcements and you they rent houses i went to two three houses and one house i went in acton there was a brazilian lady living there look how god connects god connects everything it's crazy perfect he's perfect He's perfect.
18:12He's perfect. I love God. He's perfect. Yes. I love him. He's tough, but I love him. He's tough, but he's tough. Because when he's going to give you a lesson, he gives you hard lessons. Yes, yes, yes. And you just have to be obedient. Yeah, there's no discussion. She said, oh, I like you. Oh, you have this American style, blah, blah, blah. Because I was like dressing up so cool with the headphones and stuff. And he's like, I like you. And I was in a Brazilian salon this week doing a blow dry. And I think they are hiring people. Do you want me to call them? I said, for sure, yes. She called them.
18:47It was a Tuesday, I think. On a Thursday, I was there for the interview. On a Saturday, I was already working. I still think this guy forever. And this guy was the guy that was living in the house? No, there was the lady that was living in the house. She knew the Brazilian salon. He liked me. I went to Sally's Beauty, bought all my equipment. Fun fact about me. When my mom had her salon, all the stock were missing all the time. Because there was cash flow, no cash flow, no systems, no nothing. Just talent and smile. Yes. And then, yeah. I love it. And then with my businesses, I like to have everything stocked.
19:38Enough colors, enough even hair dryers. I have a lot of hair dryers, scissors, combs, everything. So Portugal was like that. I did my beautiful kit. United States and London. I went to Salis, bought everything. I went to the salon. The other guys were working in the salon. They're like, who is that guy? Who is this guy? Yeah. And I had Instagram. I just opened Instagram that time. Which was 2013-14. It was the starting of social media. The Instagram was just like the photo sharing with the filters. Yes, with a lot of filters and just photo. And I had it. And then I started working in this Brazilian place.
20:16They also used to charge very little. So like 25 pounds for a haircut. Highlight, I don't know, 50, 70 pounds. Which is not much. But for me, it was already great. It's an upgrade from Portugal. And I was posting pictures of my clients on Instagram. Back that time. Yes, it's still there, the pictures. I never deleted. One day I go there, it's all there. There was one lady that used to go a lot to the salon and she used to do her styling. So like the waves you're using today or sometimes braid, hair up, sleek back. And she was always doing with me and she didn't mind me taking pictures. So my Instagram started to...
21:00Gosh, it was so early. Yeah, but I would never imagine that that was like a business thing. Just post. And they didn't have Instagram. So they were not even liking or sharing because they were not even liking and sharing at the time. No. And I used to do Californian highlights. I'll tell you how I learned California highlights. They were only doing highlights. The traditional highlights. I was doing the California highlights. And then some of their clients migrate from their chairs doing highlights to my chair doing California. And then you know hair salon, how it works. Yes. A lot of ego, divas, competition.
21:43It's tough. It's a vicious environment. It can be. And they start... Not liking. Not liking. Exactly. That is taking my clients. And in less than a year, I was already working as much as all of them, even more. The owner of the salon really liked me. He was giving me clients all the time. And I bring new clients to the salon as well. Clients that wanted something new. You know, when you talk about Brazilian hair salon. Yes. Far away from the... The bubble in Brazil. They live in a bubble, right? Yeah. And I wanted just to bring something new. You bring something new. Bring something from America.
22:27Even some things that I learned in Portugal. I'll tell you how I learned Californian. And then this was before, because I remember that you also start seeing clients at your apartment. Right. In your house. Yes. We get there. In Portugal, I wasn't that busy. But she had YouTube on the computer in the salon. So while I'm not doing anything, I was watching how to create California highlights. And that's how I learned on YouTube. And this is a lesson I give to all my students up to today because I teach a lot to my team. There's always a way you can learn. Oh, my God. There's always a way, especially nowadays.
23:05Back in the day, it was not as much. Yeah, you needed a computer, search for it. Yeah, YouTube, search, Google. But to now? With the algorithms. No, it's the AI. Yeah. You can learn everything. So I can hear and talking to my AI. Listen, I'm going to this podcast. She might ask me this. She might ask me that. What do you think about the breathing? Talking to him. Nowadays, there's no excuse. No excuse. There's no excuse. But people make excuses all the time. All the time. All the time, amiga. All the time. All the time. All the fucking time. Where I am? You are in California. Yeah. And then I said, I think this place is too small for me.
23:44I spoke to the owner and I said I'm leaving, thank you very much for everything and said I understand he's still my friend, said I understand I knew you're not staying with me for a long time and then I started seeing clients at their houses so I bought a little carry-on bag, put all the material and then you started going in your client's house all over London all over London Paris, I've been to Paris many many times doing a lot of the footballer's wives, which was great because for me, it introduced me to a different, Maida. It's a parallel world. A parallel world. It's a parallel world. I was going to Paris.
24:28They live like close to Paris. And I remember Neymar used to live there and all the places. It's a parallel world. I never entered in a house like that. So imagine coming from my background, experimenting nice things, but not that scale. Then going to a football player house is completely different. It's mind-blowing. Yeah, no, it's drivers. Security and horrors and cinema. I don't know. I was charging cheap, but like, yeah, for sure. Here's the ticket, blah, blah, blah. I'm like, wow, there is a different world out there that I don't know yet. And I want to belong. I want to be part of it. you know i want to experiment that start seeing clients in their houses uh and was a very tough time for me because people don't respect your time uh many times i get there very early in the morning yeah no sometimes they don't open the door you just lose your time i have a friend of mine that says that to me all the time that he goes to place people are not even like oh she's she was sleeping and he's like yeah but she woke at 8 o 'clock yeah and then like she's sleeping there's a girl I remember she usually live in Kensington and then I walked her house she's naked walking around naked like darling I don't want to see you naked I just came here she's your hair it's not my thing like it's not nice you know or they do the hair oh yes I'm going to transfer you never again never again and then one day I remember very vividly.
26:02I was in Earl's Court. It was about one year already doing mobile service. It started raining very much. I remember I was with the map. I don't know why. The London map? The London map. And the umbrella here holding the carry-on and the map all together, like messy and raining. And then the umbrella went up and then started raining all over me. And it was around 11 p.m. Wow. Yes. I was about to arrive in the client's house and start the hair. So today when I start working at 12, people don't understand. Yeah, I have credits. You have a lot of credits. And then it started raining on me. I get there.
26:46I remember it was a client that she was very tight. Everything was expensive for her, but I needed that cash. and then I said God I don't want this because that's not what you promise me when we talk or when I pray or when you use people to talk to me because that happens a lot it happens with you too I know he sent people to give you messages uh and then I I said I don't want this anymore I need a solution. And then I said, you know what? I'm going to start doing hair in my studio. Whoever wants to come, come. But it's a bold decision. Yeah, it's a bold decision. It's not easy. Because it depends on where you're going to open the space.
27:34People are not going to travel to see you. Honey, and when you count, okay, haircut, 50. Highlights, 100. And you count every single service you do, three, four services out, it makes a difference. it makes a difference 100 and i've always had responsible financial responsibilities helping my family here and there thank god i didn't need to help support them but help paying my apartment i always had a commitment so i was like very tight but i said i don't care this is not the life i want to live you know uh and then my studio was on the third floor stairs and the toilet was outside so not the best place to host people amiga but it's a starting point exato with a single bed yes I remember the single bed the single bed and then I went to Ikea I bought a chair foldable chair put behind my door mirror and started doing the hair there washing the hair in the bathtub outside so in winter time very hard very hard for the client wow I love that yeah and then wet and then but always using good products FYI yeah L 'Oreal Kerasas good products always because I remember what my mom used to use but I can assure you Kerasas and posting pictures on Instagram and the Instagram was still happening still happening yeah and since back then like professional oriented okay never like selfies or more business business then the lady uh the owner of the building said oh there is a studio on the first floor ground floor with the kitchen and toilet inside and separate uh living room living room i said i want that so i moved from the third floor to the ground floor so this time i bought a used um hairstyling unit proper mirror proper chair a portable back wash so people don't need to throw their head in the bathtub.
29:45They could just sit in a chair and do like this in the toilet. I love that. I love it. And I had a sofa where people could sit. They don't need to sit in my bed because when I was about to sleep, my bed was warm. My bed was warm. And we thought there was people energy. Exato. And then there was like a mezzanine where it was my bed. So fine. Like that was my life. And this is my business. And below is my business. I love it. That place, I start having a lot of wealthy clients coming. Because of the California highlights. Yes, because of the California highlights. They used to like the way I blow dry because I learned in the U.S.
30:27a very good way to blow dry. This guy, he was famous for that. And remember, in the U.S., I only did blow dry the whole day. Even today, my wrist is fast. I can't because done. Yeah. Halas. so clients Arab clients starts coming and I had a beautiful girl she's not my friend anymore and now I can tell you that story it's an interesting story but she was so pretty but her hair was amazing but very bad color okay and I told her listen this Gaga blonde doesn't work for you this Gaga blonde yeah the lady Gaga blonde you know let me do some darker roots give you contrast a nice contouring and we do a before and after.
31:13I don't charge you anything. I did her hair. Her hair came out wow. Wow. And our picture became one of the most searched for ombre hair on Google. Amiga, I have no idea. But you posted that picture on Instagram. On Instagram and went to Google. I didn't know how to do that. It was natural. But probably it was a caption. Probably something that you put it at Google. Yeah, caption. Maybe I did like hashtag ombre hair. California. And then that's it. You went there. Then Pinterest. That specifically picture. I'll show you. I want to see it. They're going to put this on the teaser. That picture. Incrível.
31:51I will show you. People start searching. Messaging me on Instagram. My WhatsApp. My WhatsApp, funny enough, my business WhatsApp is the same I had since I landed in London. And I did a business card online they sent to my house just the business card and i was giving to people on the buses on the tubes uh if i see someone on the supermarket that i don't like the hair say hey this is my business card i do hair you know i'm brazilian brazilian know how to do hair and you do charming you know like i do brazilian blow dry oh you know people here yeah i'm like Yeah, and then you break the ice, right?

32:33Because they're different. And then people coming to my studio, coming to my studio. And it was just you? Just me. You didn't have any? No assistant. I was washing, doing the hair, getting the money, cleaning the apartment, cutting foils, everything. Wow. I'm very fast. I learned to be fast with my mom. She's incredible. And she had four kids, five kids. Had that salon, you know. You have to be fast. You have to be fast. There's no option. There's no option. Exactly. And then my boyfriend at that time, he didn't like me working in the studio, even though I was paying all the bills. He said, I don't want you working here.
33:18It's full of hair everywhere. I understand him as well. So it's fine. People are different. And then I said, okay, I'm going to find another place to work without him. But he didn't know. Yeah, it was a hard time. I rented another apartment close by, Wisden Green. It was a top floor apartment. How do you call it? Top floor apartment. Beautiful apartment. one bedroom separate now one living room one toilet inside a very nice balcony i bought three chairs three mirrors i rent i i hired one assistant so that was my first time having an assistant and then more clients start coming because it was an even nicer apartment it was very cute and since my studio and that was was in green and then you were living there and then you did the studio on the living room yes i i did the hair studio in the living room but now instead of my bed being the mezzanine i had a bedroom bedroom proper bedroom separate closed finally okay you know my space uh more people coming in but then i realized because my clientele was changing I was charging a little bit more.
34:46And people with more spending power coming, they didn't like the area. The area. They always say, oh, I love my hair. I wish I could come more, but you're too far. And they're like, the neighborhood's a bit weird, right? I'm like, eh, eh. Yes, but. Yes, but. You look amazing. You look amazing. Get out, bitch. They use one hair dresser. Hair dresser? I think he does extension in Brazil that became so big. And then all the celebrities in Brazil go there. They travel. And then another day I saw posts of him that's like, she said, I'm never going to move from here. It's far, far, far, but my clients are coming and they're looking beautiful.
35:31So what exactly. And yeah, I know him. So my mom came to visit me that time. Okay. After, I don't know, five years. Without seeing her. Without seeing her, no. I went one or two times. Okay. Yeah. But then I said, okay, it's time for you to come. She was about to divorce. She was in the best time of her life. And then I said, come stay with me for six months. Because she could stay six months. And then she said, I'm very proud of you. Fun fact. When I was about to rent this apartment, I had to take all my savings, everything, to give to the agency, a rent, deposit, everything. And also it was a bold move for me because coming from a person that always liked to have savings and feel comfortable wiping off everything to something you don't know if it's going to work.
36:33For me it was a big deal at that time, but I did it. and you're at real risk take care yes uh and then she said i love the apartment i love the setup but i don't like the the neighborhood you need to be in central london you need to be somewhere my mom your mom and i said how because i pay here i don't know uh 1200 pounds a month and london central london much more but we managed to find a place that was the one in big street no That was the one in Fitzrovia. Okay. It was a loft apartment. Super beautiful. The most beautiful apartment I ever lived here. But it cost 4 ,000 pounds a month. But you're living there as well?
37:20That's the time? Yes. Okay. So I said, it's a big move. It's double what I'm paying. But I need to be in central. I could see my clientele changed. And I rented that apartment. I was living downstairs. Two bedrooms now. I could host my mom, whatever. Upstairs in the mezzanine, big mezzanine, six chairs, hired people to help me out. Who helped you out? It was a proper business inside my house. That was the first time I felt like I have a team. It's happening. It's happening. I know I didn't buy a car that time, no. But I was dressing up better. Instead of buying Primark, I was buying Zara and Massimo Dutti.
38:02So it was an upgrade. Super great. Yeah. But, Amiga, since the beginning, I was in Primark. I go choose the right fit for the trousers, right fit for the t-shirt, always dressing properly. Super properly. Yeah. And I still talk about that with my team. There's no excuse. There's no excuse. Especially here. No, especially in London, that everything is just so accessible. Accessible. Like, why are you dressing like a garbage like this? You know? Perfume. how you take care it's true you say I say this to my team to my team I say no but the thing is you have to because you work with service beauty beauty I'm sorry it's a beauty salon it's a beauty salon so you don't have ugly salon yes you have to look pretty I'm sorry because the way you look is how people are going to get excited and attracted to do the service with you how are you going to be a top hairstylist with oily hair no you can't I'm sorry you know dress properly, smell nice, teeth.
39:05And when did you feel like that now, like, I'm going to the right direction, I'm making it. What was that turning point that you really felt inside you that, wow, it's happening, I'm making it? That is a point. I think when I started traveling for work to the Emirates. That's when you feel that, and then Emirates came because was that? Through Instagram. through Instagram too they messaged me once along there we like what you do we don't have anyone who does this technique here would you be able to come and do our clients in Dubai yes why not then they're like I need you to record this video saying XYZ and send it to me so we're gonna promote you here in Dubai I remember me doing the video in this house hey I'm Bernardo I'm a top hairstylist I'm coming to Dubai come see me I am shocked.
40:03So, then there was Instagram. Instagram? Instagram. Empower social media. Instagram made my career. Instagram made your career. Let's call Mark. Raise Mark so we can call him Mark Zuckerberg. Instagram made my career full stop. Without you, that's what I love about it. Because you started posting in 2013 without even... There was not a strategy for you to post. My life, there's no strategy. If I tell you still today, there's no strategy. It feels like there's strategy. There's no strategy. It's instinctive. Of course, now as the business and what I'm doing to my business now, I'm building systems.
40:39I'm projecting my business for a possible sale, whatever it is. But I need that. But until now, I'm being honest with you, it's instinctive. Today, when people go to social media, especially Instagram, today people think about it, the strategy, the content. But when you started, there was nothing. It's just like photo, post, and that's it. And now you're saying that Instagram made your career. It made my career. All those people, not only Dubai, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, back in America for work, invitation. Dominican Republic, I have a great clientele there. I have my partners there. We have a beautiful partnership for six years.
41:18We do the most self-after clientele in the whole Dominican Republic. It's our clientele. Amazing. Doha, I opened a salon in Doha through Instagram. They came to me. We have a hair salon. We have the sources. So you never did outreach? So they outreach to you? No, I don't remember me outreaching. And the times I tried, it didn't work. It's always like that. It's always like that. It's always like that. But if I could give myself an advice, Otherwise, I could just possibly focus on one specific strategy back then. What that would be? I think being more intentional because I was doing so many stuff at the same time.
42:09But I don't regret because I think that was taking me here. But if people ask me today, I say don't believe in all the promises. Don't try to catch all the opportunities at once. Focus one or two, be intentional about it. But I know it's hard when you're younger. You're younger because you just want to make it. I started too early. Yeah. Probably too early. So I didn't have the maturity to think, oh, what is intentional? I didn't even know, baby. I'm just making it. You know, I have used to pay. So I opened my first salon on the lower ground floor in Baker Street. That one I remember because Luana was working there.
42:51I think that was the first time I properly met you because Luana was working with me. And then she started working there. Yeah, I remember you there. And then I moved upstairs. The lease wasn't mine. But I managed to refurbish the whole place with my pocket, everything. Make it beautiful. Paying the guys rent weekly. And one day, he sold the shop. He didn't tell me. He disappeared. And the new owner just doubled my rent. Then you say, oh, oh. Hey, what I'm going to do? And then I said, my mom said, it's time for you to have your own place with your lease under your name. It's time to grow. And then your mom was already here.
43:30She was already here. And your sister as well. Later on. Later. She didn't want to come. Your sister came after Baker Street. Like a year, a year, a year after that. And then now when you look back and see where you are today, because it's just like the hard work, always being there. the passion always been there the belief is always been there the faith has always been there and today to where you are how having the success that you have achieved if you have to define success what's the definition of success for you is the definition of success for me is for me right now it's managing to own my time this is my success now.
44:20Success for me five years ago was being able to have my savings and business up and running and my property coming from your own brain. That was my success. But now it's having ownership of my time. That for me is precious. And this is so special because you don't realize that you don't have time until you don't have time. Because with me, it's the same. It's just sometimes I go like, okay, where is my time? Yes, but you don't want. There is no me time. It's just like, it's always giving and giving and giving. But when you're building, you don't feel it. No. But then at one point, you feel everything at once.
45:12And then you go like, whoa. Yes. Wait a second. Wait a second. And in the past, you cannot regain the time that has been... Again, there's no regret on the time giving. So I think we should be grateful that we have realized this within time. Yes. Because there are people that realize that when they're 75 years old, 65 years old. Or they just spend it. They don't do anything. Exactly. They just spend the time. They don't spend the time. We spend the time doing something. Exactly. So I think it's a very good answer. And I also realized that reading, I'm reading much more now. I'm listening to podcasts all the time.
45:51And I realized that really being busy does not mean I'm being productive. No, not at all. But I was like that, Mayra, for, I don't know, 10 years. No, me too. Tell me. Tell me. On a hamster wheel, busy, busy, busy, busy, busy, busy. And no sleep. Because I don't know you. Because I like for me. Now I sleep good, but lack of sleep. I sleep, sleeping four hours, five hours, because I felt guilty to disconnect. I was just like, if I stop, like the time that I'm going to be sleeping, I could have been building a strategy. I could be doing an outreach. I could be sending an email to try to gain a new client.
46:29So sleep for me was like a threat to my own business. So I was punishing myself with sleep. And my noise in my head was saying to me, if we sleep, it's less a client that you can have. if we sleep is less one thing that you can have it's a trap you don't produce anything you're not 100 with your team with your family uh yeah so for me today it's having time why because i can work out on my body properly now i think by the way feel feel No. Finally, you know, in years I'm very happy with what I see. But because I have time to think or choose. You create the time. Yes. Because the time has always been there.
47:15Yes, exato. But it was like a hurricane of actions all the time, you know. Now I think what I'm going to eat or where should I go. I didn't have weekends for my entire life. no Saturdays no Friday nights because on a Saturday especially weekends because the salon is this day and then what I decided I decided to work three times a week seeing clients sometimes two so two or three times a week with clients so when I'm there I'm 100 % there for them no like before that was five six times a week and I was stressed I didn't have patience with them I wasn't delivering my best. So now three times delivering my best.
48:01And then the others. The others. I'm working on the business. I'm working on myself. I can go see my nephew play. I start playing tennis a year and a half ago. You create the time that you deserve. That you've always been there. One thing that you're very known. Is about your reputation. And your credibility. But one thing that you always know. Is that you're a tough leader. Very tough. And I'm telling you, I am like transparency. It is what it is. But it's that balance where the reputation, the credibility for who you are, for the excellence of the service that you have, and the loyalty of your clients.
48:41And then in parallel, you have that. Bernardo is a very tough leader. I have two choices. Tell me what the two choices are. I can be very nice with my team and smile all the time and let them do whatever they want to do. If they feel like not giving 100%, it's fine. I understand. And that reflects into my business and the experience my clients have. Or I will really push them very hard because I know my clients push me very hard. And I'm the showman there. I am the founder and I'm the face. You are everything. They are going to push me very hard. We charge a lot for them to be seated on this chair.
49:20They deserve the best. And I don't care. If you don't want a performance, if you don't feel like performance here, go somewhere else. I don't hold anyone back, Maíra. But when they are here. They're very transparent. Very transparent. But when they are with me, they are with me. For them. Not for me. Me outside the salon, I tell them, guys, don't take it personal. We step outside. Let's talk about everything, baby. Your night out with your boys, whatever. You know, I'm a bubbly guy. You know, I'm not. But for my clients, for my business, they deserve the best. And if you're not feeling like, bye-bye.
49:58And you're very straight to the point. Very straight to the point. Because why? Oh, Bernardo, you know I'm tied this month. I need X amount of money in advance here. Oh, I have something. I need to travel for two weeks. Go. I'm feeling stressed today. Can I take the day off? Take it. But don't work from home. don't come with working from home, doesn't work with me. I'm old school. I cannot work from home today. No. Take the day off. I might come. So you're not that bad. You don't want to lose the day, right? So come. But come and work. Because when I'm there, Maeda, I do everything until today.
50:39These three days, I wash the hair if I need to. I clean the floor. I go to the toilet. Every time I go to the toilet, I check if the toilets are clean. I dress up. sometimes I don't feel like but you have to the amount of creams I have to put in my face every morning one cream for this and then the gel and then perfume and then this and then the jewelry to be presentable so you don't care if people like you or not as a they don't need to like me it's fine but the thing is I love that because I don't know like you cannot have both you cannot have both do you think we can have both no we can't but it's a tough journey of learning that you can, you're not going to be able to please everyone.
51:24And it's okay because in the past, when I signed the business, I had the illusion that I have to be liked by every single employee and for that I will have to accept everything. But then as the time passed by, you just go like, no, it's the other way around. They don't even like their family sometimes. They're going to like me. They don't know me. Sometimes they don't have a good relationship with their mom. They don't talk to their siblings. They have a horrible relationship with their partners. And they need to love me. No, you need to respect me. I need to respect you. I love that. I think it's not about liking.
51:59It's respect. And I think for me, today is the most important thing. If there is respect, we can have it all. And respect my time too. You know, because my time is precious, as I told you. And I respect your time. So if you tell me, Bernardo, I work X amount this week. I think we pay them every two weeks salary is always there everything my side is done do your side as well don't let me wait don't come to work showing up like you didn't have a fucking shower in the morning no I'm sorry I'm not gonna accept you work in a hair salon you wanna work like that go work in an office where no one sees you or work from home in another job not with me but if you want to work for us for our follow the rules because I'm doing that for the clients and they are our boss they pay us they gave the life I have and they are giving the opportunity for you guys to grow as well one controversial question how do you deal with betrayal before
53:07before I used to feel it for a week now I don't feel anything I I understand that people have different boundaries. They have different upbringing. They have different values. And I believe in karma. I know what I'm doing in my life for the world. If you betray me, you're going to pay this price at some point. I don't even... Like, I'll tell you what happened. I'm rebuilding my hair salon after the flood. I had this guy. I knew him from before. He worked with us before, a contractor. We paid him, I think, 10K in advance. He didn't show up. He was lying that he was there on time. He was asking for his team to lie to me that he was doing the job.
54:01He was in another construction site. I had a very tough talk with him twice. He said, no, fine, okay, I'm so sorry, I understand. I even talked to my therapist and I know that I'm wrong, Bernardo. I'm going to take it right now. Bear with me because they're three weeks behind. Two days ago, he disappeared. 10K, gone, vanished. His team stayed because they had a good relationship with me. But the guy disappeared. Then when I was there yesterday, one of the guys from his team was like, He told me already that you were going to give up on the construction and disappear. I said, wow, really? Yeah, but listen, I'm going to give you the pricing.
54:45You can check with him. I said, he's dead. Don't talk about him. He's dead. You're going to find someone else. I'm going to work with you. We're going to finish this construction site. One thing that is, I don't know for you, but something that I've learned at hard cost is that no one is irreplaceable. No one. I'll tell you something about it. I always thought that people, that there are certain people that you cannot replace. We are. And then you go like, oh my God, how I'm going to do without that person, that person, that person. And then out of the sense that you go like, wow. Let me tell you something.
55:21You can even replace me, replace you. Of course. No one is replaceable. But funny enough, in my career, I don't feel like I'm the best. There's so many people that does hair much better than me. It's all good. I'm not jealous of my clients. Go. I just want to see you pretty. A lot of my friends, I don't do the hair because I want to keep the friendship, relationship. So I'm not attached to my clients because I know anyone can do this. Go. It's about personality. It's not about the hair. But with some people that used to work for me, I was attached to them as if they were irreplaceable. Oh, my God.
55:57You know I have the same. And there's one guy I was paying more and paying more and doing everything. Like everything. I'm doing everything for you. But if you leave the salon at night and you go home, smoke joint the whole fucking night and eat sweets and you don't go to the gym, you don't have a boyfriend or you don't go out, you don't interact with other people outside your work. Of course, darling, you're going to come to work next day feeling grumpy. Everything is going to be bad. People will be talking about you behind your back because it's here, Maida. It's his own mind. Try. Go to the gym for 15 days every morning.
56:38Shower. Get ready for work. After the gym, study something. Go walk in the park. Change your vision. The way you see the world will change. 100%. I was doing everything and nothing would be enough. And this guy left. And I'm here. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. I'm spending much less. But it's a hard work to learn. I learned with a very high price. Yeah, with very high price. And it's the same. And I'm here. You know what I mean? It's just like, I'm here. Hello? And then I think, but I think I love that. That's the beauty of the journey and the beauty of the process of being an entrepreneur at an early age.
57:23Yes. Because as you grow, as you evolve, you learn so much. And we become a better person. We become a better leader. Yes. So we create time that before we thought that it was not possible. If you have to give three pieces of advice for anyone that is starting now. Okay. And it's lost, is afraid or have a fear. What the three main advice you would give? Okay. Number one, work on your personal brand. Personal brand is everything. Is your IP. Even the way you talk, the places you go, how you dress, how you communicate with the world. Personal brand, number one. Because you can be, in my case, a hairstylist that charges$100 or$700.
58:14It's not about the technique. No, it's about your IP, your personal brand. Personal brand. Number two, use AI in your favor. and I was a bit late, but now I'm full on and I'm giving my team everything about it. And then when my team from the office come to me and they're like thinking too much, I'm like, why are you thinking? Go talk to Claude. Go talk to Claude. Claude, they have all the best answers for us. And they're like, ah, really? I said, guys, I'm a hairstylist. You work in the office. You should be teaching me that. Okay. and then they they're getting it so it's uh it's an energy that is going through the whole office my sister is she's very clever and talkative she's like you gemini like she does everything she's great in ai so she's helping us with that so personal branding use ai in your favor and third i would say don't lose your essence don't lose your soul because i've seen people here and next day they're here and everything they had was the prestigious and the money and the access and the contacts but they lost themselves through the way this is something i always remind myself what really is uh what what is really uh the treasures you keep you know uh What is to be rich?
59:49Things like that. And I think when you ask those questions, you keep yourself grounded. I'm nobody. I'm nobody. Why? Because you're in Chanel. And then tomorrow your husband bankrupt and you have to sell everything. And you were treating people like that and now you disappear. Don't be dispersed. Don't forget where you're coming from. Or don't be like a diva and I'm the best hairstylist. Oh, my God. If Maida doesn't do the hair with me, oh my God, she's missing out. No, why? Yeah, that's it. Personal branding. Use your AI. Your AI, consequently, will help you to work on your social medias, of course.
1:00:29There's no question about it. I don't need to say that. And don't lose yourself. Because it's very easy to lose yourself. But it's just so important to remember where you came from. Very easy, Maida. And also, I think the advantage of spiritual people like us, It helps us to keep us grounded. I never lose my soul because of that. Yeah. So I think when you have God at the forefront of everything, because it's easy, especially the access that you have, that I have, it's very easy to lose yourself. I could be right now in a yacht in south of France. You could. No people. But I prefer to be working.
1:01:08I prefer to be here working, stressing myself on the constructions. Being with my team, at some point I go. You know, because I could be there enjoying the whole summer, but this is not me. This is not Bernardo's life. It's someone else's life. And I don't live someone else's life. I live my life. You live your life. Yeah. B, we're going to have to have episode two. You are like an unbelievable person, soul, spirit. I was so happy. Your energy, your story is just so inspiring. And because I know you from the beginning, because I had the God pleasure of putting Luana into my way. And because of Luana, I get to know you.
1:01:54Because, you know, like God connects people as you know. And it's always so good to see people like you that has a trajectory that was not an easy trajectory. But looking back with that proud that I don't care what I came from. Because what I care is what I have built through integrity, through my loyalty, to the excellence of the service that you do. And carry on inspiring people because I think that's your call from God. This is like creating a business to help other people. And when I say other people, it's your family, it's the people that surround you. Because when we have been given a vision, it's because there's a purpose behind that vision.
1:02:40And I think it's our responsibility as an entrepreneur, as a founder, that everything that's been given to us, what is the purpose behind that? In this episode of Beyond Marketing, The Podcast, Maira Genovese sits down with Bernardo Vasconcelos, one of the world's most sought-after hairstylists and founder of luxury haircare brand BCO, for an unfiltered conversation about building an empire from nothing, and what it really takes to stay at the top.
From selling Yakult outside his mum's garage salon in São José dos Campos, to washing hair in a bathtub in his studio flat, to flying to Dubai after a single Instagram DM, Bernardo's story is a masterclass in hunger, resilience, and the power of personal brand. They discuss why being busy is not the same as being productive, what tough leadership really looks like, and why success today means owning your time, not your schedule.
A raw, honest, and deeply inspiring conversation about entrepreneurship, loyalty, faith, and never losing yourself on the way up.
