0:07Welcome to Breaking Beauty, the podcast all about the breakthrough people, products, and moments in beauty. We're your hosts, Jill Dunn and Carlene Higgins.
0:20Welcome to Breaking Beauty podcast, everyone. Jill and Carlene here, your humble co-hosts back in your feed like we are every single Wednesday for the past seven years delivering what's good in the beauty world. Hey, Carlene. Hey, Jill. We're two magazine beauty editors turned beauty podcasters featuring the breakthrough people, products, and moments in beauty. And we've had the great pleasure of hosting industry trendsetters on our show. People like Jen Atkin, makeup artist, Patti Dubrov, skincare guru, Joanna Vargas. So the, you know, the true and true glam squads in Hollywood. And we chat with the people who are shaping beauty culture today.
1:01Celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Tracy Ellis Ross and influencers like Michaela Makeup and Patrick Starr. And today we're joined by two amazing social media creators. I'm quite sure you've seen them all over your feeds. And that That is Alexis Andrewlakis and Dr. Christina Andrewlakis, better known by their handle at the Lipstick Lesbians. And the topic of today's chat is all about shopping makeup smarter, not harder with the quote unquote beauty literacy experts, the Lipstick Lesbians. Yes, Alexis and Christina, who are married, by the way, have built the Lipstick Lesbians universe to a community of over one million people across social media platforms in just over a year.
1:45That's so impressive. And if you're not familiar with their content, a lot of times they're right in the aisles of Sephora picking up products and swatching. And Alexis, who's been in product development and education for over 17 years, including working on celebrity incubator brands, she'll be commenting on a makeup items, texture, glide, pigment, even IDing where the formula is made because she has that insider knowledge and intel that she's sharing. She makes the aisles of Sephora seem like she's in a beauty lab kind of thing. And her partner, Dr. Christina, she's an award-winning educator and has a doctorate in education and technology.
2:30And she's really spearheading their mission to kind of redefine beauty education, which I find so refreshing. And they're blending innovation and inclusivity. and in short, they're just not afraid to spill the tea about formulas, price points, packaging. And I think that's why they've garnered so much trust with their followers. And I personally appreciate that they're not 20 years old, like in the TikTok universe or the Reels universe. I never scroll past one of their videos. I always watch it. Yeah. So in today's episode, it's almost like we're getting a crash course in product development, how it's different from what a cosmetic chemist does.
3:06We find out what makes a product a red flag on a store shelf, what she wouldn't touch, what we can look out for. And we get into a very interesting discussion about SPF doping, a trend they say they're seeing in product formulations more and more these days. Of course, we just put our bread on the hot seat and we're asked what trends they think will pop off later in 2024 and into 2025. And we get a sneak peek of a very exciting new online education platform that they're launching soon. It's called Beauty mastery transform into a product developer and consumer genius. Who doesn't want to become a consumer genius if you are a beauty addict?

5:13Medicaid is supporting our show this week. I just got back from holiday, everyone. My first order of business was to open all my beauty mail. And I was thrilled that Medicaid had sent me a package. It's one of those brands I've seen all over my social media feed for years. It almost has a lore about it, but I've never personally tried it until now. So if you're not familiar, Medicaid is a clinically proven British skincare brand known for its age defying results. And it's dermatologist recommended, which of course we love. Right away, I dove into the package and an early favorite product of mine that I want to tell you about is Medicaid's bestselling liquid peptides.
5:54So it's clinically proven to smooth the look of fine lines and wrinkles in just seven days. I checked out the before and afters on their website and they're kind of mind blowing. So I'm definitely going to continue on this journey. And liquid peptides is formulated with 10 powerful peptides in just one bottle. And liquid peptides reduces the appearance of expression lines and deep set wrinkles. Music to my ears. So we have a special offer just for Breaking Beauty listeners. If you'd like to try Medicaid liquid peptides yourself, visit Medicaid.us for 20 % off your first order with code beauty at checkout.
6:31That's M-E-D-I-K, the number 8.us and code beauty to save 20%. Once again, visit medicaid.us for 20 % off your first order with code beauty at checkout. And now onto the show.
6:51Welcome to Breaking Beauty podcast, Alexis and Christina, aka the lipstick lesbians. Tell us what's the 60 second, you know, long story short on how y 'all ended up in our for you page. And maybe this is obvious, but for anyone who doesn't know what's behind the name. Oh, my God. I don't know if we can make a long story. I could do a 60 second elevator pitch. My brilliant wife has been yelling at me to make content for five years. And one day she took matters into her own hands and started filming me inside Sephora. and all driven by my desire to replenish my Makeup by Mario skin enhancer. That's what the trip, that was the birth of the reason for the trip.
7:35Yeah. And the content was really just a moment of celebration, I think, of the craft of product development. And Christina is the only one that ever got to witness that who was outside of the industry in its purest form. So she captured it on camera, edited the video, posted the video. I had no idea, waking up the next morning, shaking me and said, we're viral, we're viral, we're viral. That's pretty good for a first video. I mean, that's incredible. In the beauty space. I mean, a lot of people don't know this and we don't really talk about it that much in our channel, but we did have a beauty brand called Fem Power Beauty that sold lipsticks.
8:11We only had lipsticks. We completely bootstrapped, which means that we completely self-funded our own line, which is the most insane thing you could do. I do not recommend it. I went a lot the hard way. And during COVID, I wanted to find creative ways to get our name out there. So to me, I just like, I don't know if I was channeled or a creative wind got a hold of me. And I was like, we're lesbian. We sell lipstick. We need to be a lipstick lesbian. So I captured the handle and it was during COVID in 2021. And I just filmed Alexis. And the problem was, without beauty, the problem was that we didn't have a lot of behind the scenes of our lives to show as founders of this brand, because that was the idea.
8:45Like I'll capture the handle. We'll show the behind the scenes of our lives as founders of this brand and let's see what happens. But it was a lot of me recording Alexis like hey baby what's your favorite part of being a lesbian because I thought because it had lesbian in the name we needed to talk about being gay but the first time we really just didn't talk about our brand is when we went viral yeah that's a lesson to any brand people listening exactly behind the scenes it is and people care more about humans what we've learned with our podcast but they they like the takeaway and that's TikTok too, right?
9:19It's like, it's the service that you give in your 60 seconds where you're just like doing your evaluations and stuff where it's like they, you know, that's what they, that's what they want. And that's what we're delivering today. Yes, absolutely. So to clarify, Alexis, you have been a beauty girly for a while. You've worked in the industry and I'm so curious, what is the difference between a product developer, a cosmetic formulator and a cosmetic chemist? And where do you fall in this range? It's a great question. It's a great question. It's a perfect way to segue into like honoring PD because it's often the forgotten art.
9:54I say as as someone who worked in that forgotten art for a little bit, quite a bit. So the formulator you would classify for in my mind, I think of formulators and chemists in the same umbrella. They are the ones who are hands on. They are pulling the raw materials that they have inside the lab and they are mixing the bases that we all enjoy in finished form today. Now the product developer, depending on where you're sitting in the industry, are you working inside a major corporation who's working with outside vendors who we call contract manufacturers? So you're on the brand side or are you on the manufacturing side?
10:29There's slight nuance, but the most important thing is the product developer is always quarterbacking and translating to the chemist what the marketing team wants. And that holds true across whether you're on brand or manufacturing. So a lot of what what I would be able to identify as a major consumer pain point need problem, I could translate that to the chemist who's not always wearing makeup, who doesn't understand what it's like to walk out of New York City on an 89 degree day and have a product or their product or his product melt off. Yeah. So there is a fine line between science and art.
11:05And when I studied at FIT, the first question that they asked us at the beginning of the cosmetics and fragrance marketing program, do you think cosmetics is an art or a science? The scientists will tell you it's science and the makeup artists will tell you it's art. And I will tell you it's that beautiful middle point. And that's the relationship. That's the sweet spot between the chemist and the PD person that brings you the true magic you see on shelves today. I love that. That's awesome. Synergy. And Christina, your background is in education. You have a PhD. I do. Dr. Christina. I am, yeah.
11:38We have here with us. And so you both are creating something really exciting. Beauty mastery, transform into a product developer and consumer genius. Can you give us a sneak peek of what this beauty course will be, where it will be available? What can you share? How many times have I stood at the drugstore, like shopping for products, just looking at this wall, being so overwhelmed? I'm like, I don't know what to buy. So with that question in mind, always zooming out, asking the much bigger questions. And that's what we do in the course. And we break down different formats. We go through the differences.
12:16We break down the chemistry, really helping consumers figure out what can they be better at looking at beauty products? How can they look at their beauty purchase differently? But also, if you're someone that wants to break into the beauty industry and you want break into beauty product development. How many DMs do we get? Oh, my God. And people don't even know this is what you do as a job. No, you did as a job. They have no idea. And that's that's where the exciting. That's where the course began. And we had a very small beta for a few months that we launched about a year ago or alpha even. Yeah.
12:49Dare I say, in the sense that we had such demand for this and we desperately wanted to give our community what they wanted. Yeah. But it was premature. And then that's when we sat down for months and put together what we've considered this, what I, what I will see as the future of a framework of how to start to learn about makeup and the development aspects. Because we look at, you know, makeup education courses, it's a lot of artistry, which is amazing. Exactly. Right. But I haven't seen anything and please correct me if I'm wrong. I haven't seen anything that's, you know, breaking down beauty products in a way that's helping consumers understand how to make better purchases.
13:24And at the same time, like elevating just the literacy of like how to read beauty products. Well, this is it. And I feel like you really are tapping into a niche because you do see this with skincare. We've seen this kind of like movement where people wanted to understand, you know, the single ingredients that you can buy and like going so deep on that education. everybody wanted to be like a skincare nerd. And you're right. I think in the makeup space, it's more about application and you get that from makeup artists. But if you really want to understand, you know, what makes something a satin versus a sparkle or something like that, this sounds like it's going to be great.
14:08Their videos, is that what it's going to be? Or do I download a syllabus? There will be a companion workbook. Okay. There'll be evaluation. scales and dovetailing on satin. Satin could mean 15 different things. So imagine just for a quick, you know, little preview, teaser. There are 13 different formats of lip products in the lip category. We're going to break it down for you. Not just luxury product, product by product, format by format, luxury and mass market comparisons. And then we're going to be weaving together through the ingredient narrative, kind of what ingredients should you be looking for and like what products are like as so you can start to really build your repertoire, your wardrobe, your arsenal of things that you know you love and why you love them.
14:58I love it. I think it's amazing. Let's do a crash course right now. So I want to ask you, Alexis, what do you think is really driving makeup innovation right now? Because is it pigment? Is it application? Is it is it just a giant leap forward with formulations? Dovetailing off of what you just shared about skincare and how everyone wanted to be a skincare nerd. When we take an ingredient centric approach in skincare, you've now educated everyone about ingredients. You've gotten them hungrier and more curious. So then we're now seeing so much more hybrid categories being birthed where we're actually entering the arena where we're not just getting that efficacy level of an ingredient in skincare anymore.
15:40We're now looking for that efficacy level in color cosmetics. And we're looking to validate or substantiate or choose whatever word you like. In terms of those performance attributes, we're looking to substantiate them with claims and clinical testing in color for the first time in the history of beauty. So once you zoom out and you think about, okay, way more competitive, way more costly and way harder necessarily to formulate a color cosmetic product to now have even these types of claims be substantiated at a more sophisticated, in a more sophisticated way than ever before, coupled with the innovations in raw materials, which are also driving the industry forward, the rate and speed at which things are being produced.
16:27And then the last piece, which is really critical, the competition. Everybody has to do something that's forward thinking in a way that is really going to separate them from the herd and the volume of product that's out there, especially when you can go buy an amazingly well-built foundation by elf. It's$8. Yeah. How are you going to sell the$70 foundation? Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. This is probably a bit of a loaded question because all of your content, a lot of your content stems from this. But if we wanted to be like you and we're in the aisles of Sephora, what's a red flag that a makeup product is best left on the shelf?
17:07Are there a few know no ingredients for you or like what yeah that's left on the shelf yeah you shouldn't buy it that's right okay so this is also really a beautiful moment too to kind of honor some some chemists i have a really really good chemist friend and we've known each other for years his name is julio pina aka mr pineapple we're trying to get him to make content i know he's also like the SPF whisperer. Oh, the lens of a chemist, the lens of a makeup artist, the lens of a product developer. A lot of times you'll see formulas on the shelf in many instances where there will be separation.
17:44Now, as a makeup artist, you've seen this before, right? Yeah. You just grab the bottle, shake it back up. We call these bad emulsions. You shake it back up and then you're back, right? Your product is back together. Usually this doesn't deter me from making a purchase. But when a chemist who looks at that, they're going to look at that and in two seconds, they're going to say, OK, this is a formula that could have been made to be more stable, to hold together more strongly. So things that are red flags for me personally as a product developer is not necessarily separation. It's when I start to see dispersions or when I start to see pigments that hangs out on the wall of a product.
18:24Like on a like a pan of cheddar or think like the wall of a foundation, the wall of an illuminator, the wall. There was that Armani blush. Yeah. That did it pretty poorly. Sometimes. Yeah. And it's it's there's also newer innovations where they'll have a separate phase on the outside that is holding certain types of pearls where on the inside it's not. And all of this is relative to to what you will accept. But when I see a beige foundation with red pigment hanging out on the wall, that means that that red pigment jumped out of the base right it doesn't want to be there that means you've actually seen this oh yeah yeah that's a classic you know especially when testers sit don't get touched you'll see unfortunately for it's really hard but you'll see all the flaws in the products that are hanging out way more than the products that are being used right that's so interesting yeah so that's my biggest call out but ultimately you can shake most things back to life as I say.
19:21And a chemist will tell you vehemently, like, if you see separation, that formula isn't as strong as it could be. And sometimes that comes from bringing things to market too quickly.

And I'm so glad that that exists with way because I've never seen it and any other brands. So I use that during the week. And every Sunday I use the detox shampoo to get out all of the dry shampoo I've used during the week in between washes. 23:15what's the toughest makeup product to evaluate and why that's a good question it's of course foundation yeah right shade think about how daunting it is to sit with a team of three people maybe if you're lucky and you have like a global artistry team to work with to develop just 30 to 50 shades when you know that there are, you know, billions of people in the world. Yeah. It's a tall order. It's a really tall. And it's just the table stakes now. Everyone's like, this is the expectation. But it's incredibly hard. I even remember when the Fenty Beauty Foundation came out and broke the Internet. It was so needed.
23:52But I remember makeup artists telling me they're like, if you are the Fitzpatrick one, you're the lightest shade. Right. The formulation was actually slightly different than for the formulation for the darkest skin tone. Yeah. Yes. So that's why some people loved it. And they were like, it goes on like this. And the person with a different skin tone was like, it's it doesn't work like that on me at all. Yes. And then I think we came to realize that it had to be a slightly different formulation to have the pigment hold up or what. Yeah. So I'm not explaining it. No, no, no, no. That's OK. It's great.
Read the full transcript
24:20It's great. You have more. You have a lot of a fundamental base knowledge compared to many, but black pigment absorbs product differently. So as you get into the darker shade ranges, you're getting more absorption. And also, if you think about certain white pigments, a lot of times people use titanium dioxide, pure, pure white in bases as well for opacity, meaning you want coverage. So the more full coverage of foundation, the harder it is to get that full coverage effect with the darker the pigment. Right. But we have, because it's the more you're using a little bit of that white pigment against that really dark, dark black.
24:57But that white is going to bring out all the gray and all the ashiness. But you need a little bit of white. It's just the right amount. Yeah. And then your level of black pigment is absorbing the maybe the oils in the base. Right. Yeah. More so than the lightest shade is getting absorbed. So it's going to be drier. It's going to affect the finish. It's going to affect the finish. It's going to affect how maybe how hydrating the formula feels, how heavy. Yeah. the formula feels on skin and perception. This is why Christine and I want people to be incredible evaluators. If you know how to look for these nuances and you know how to find what's going to work for you.
25:30Right. Not you're going to be, you know, just following the sea of trends on TikTok or wherever, wherever. Yeah. So that's and that's just one nuance because every remember, if we talk about the foundation category, there's skin tints, there's BBs, there's CCs. they're all in the same spirit and they have the same aura, but they certainly require a different developmental skill and a different breadth of shade ranges because of how flexible the formulas are. So interesting. It's never just one ingredient that is driving what's happening in your formula experience. There's a really kind of interesting conversation happening now, and I wanted to make sure I brought this up.
26:12Also, the SPF whisperer, Julio and I talk about this often, but they're calling it SPF doping. Have you guys heard of this at all? SPF doping, it's a big, yeah. It should have come up a lot more, I think. It will come up a lot more, but most importantly, like it's never just the UV filter that's giving you your SPF valuation on its own. You know, you need the boosters and you also may have film formers or polymers. So film formers, polymers, they're going to help hold the product onto your face. Yeah. Which that when you're in the clinical testing facility, the most important factor about sunscreen is that the product stays held on your face so it can actually protect you because if it falls off.
26:54Right. So it's never just and I bring this example up to really hit it home, but we're never using one ingredient that's going to do everything for us. Yeah. And at times, companies want to call out and this is a blanket industry statement for years. Companies are calling out maybe one romance ingredient, two, three. Now they're getting more playful. But it's it's always more than just what you're reading in the marketing that's driving the performance, whether it's a hydration claim and makeup, a long wearing claim and makeup or any claim really transfer resistance claim. Yeah. The sum of its parts, never the single unit.
27:31So that's a really important distinction. Yeah. For everybody. I feel like that's a marketing thing. And we talked about this years ago. Now it's popular. But the hidden gem in so many formulas was glycerin. Yes. And it was never being called out. Right. Because it would be so played out. Yeah. No one would want to hear about it anymore. This is the ingredient story. It's this hot one, this hot one, this hot one. And we're looking going, the second ingredient is glycerin. I'm pretty sure that's actually what's doing the magic here. But somebody said like how glycerin needed hyaluronic acids, publicist.
28:02Yeah. Exactly. Exactly. To actually get on the stage. You know? You're going to start to see, speaking of renaissance in regulatory, but also just you're starting to see brands now in terms of where the industry is going. Suppliers even. Suppliers are putting raw materials in color cosmetics for the first time that I've seen in my career at what we call efficacy level. So you're getting hydration claims at efficacy level from a blush. that you weren't getting before. And they're testing it to validate it, which means that the brands can also speak to this, make the claim. And that always wasn't the case.
28:44It was the glycerin. It's usually the glycerin, right? I'm using this just as a fun. Yeah, yeah. So I want to go back to what you said about SPF doping. Oh, thank you. I was about to come out of my mouth. What's the doping aspect? So the doping aspect is that there's a certain company out there that's claiming that their zinc oxide is like a superhero zinc oxide. They really want to own this zinc oxide. And you're going to see you've seen a lot of mineral-only sunscreens now launch, right? And now what are we seeing in the U.S.? Mineral-only sunscreens with a tint, right? I think we've seen three mega launches recently.
29:20And they're all beautiful. I'm excited for them. So this one company in particular is claiming that other brands in the SPF category are claiming 100 % mineral, but they're putting chemical style UV filters in or things that mimic a chemical UV filter. Right. And they're putting in boosters like we talked about earlier. Yeah. Into the formulation to ensure that they hit the SPF 30 claim. But the doping part is that they're not revealing the chemical filters inside the formula. And they're claiming the 100 percent mineral. But going back to and this is why I brought it up, because it's such a such an interesting, juicy topic.
29:59Yeah, for sure. I've talked about it with my regulatory friends and my chemist friends and my PD friends, and we all talk about it. Yeah. Because it's hilarious, again, to assume that your zinc oxide has such a superpower that you can just go and test it and you're not going to use anything. Like, take your zinc oxide, go test it without a film former. Yeah. Is it going to stay on? Right. It needs the boosters. It needs the other, you know, companion UV filters at times. This is a deepened meeting. Yeah. And I want to be very clear. I am not a chemist. Yeah. I surround myself with them. Yeah. And I learn from them and with them.
30:34And there's lots of amazing chemists on platform as well. Right. But the really important part to take away here for me is as for the consumers. Right. For everyone. Yeah. Is that there are it's the sum of its parts and the way that they validate the testing is a super interesting procedure. It's not just about it's really about you have to understand, like the minute your skin gets red on the SPF test, they stop. But if you put soothing ingredients into your formula, what do you think is going to happen on the SPF test? You think your skin might stay less red a little longer? And that is where we've seen the breakthroughs in innovation because a lot of chemists and formulators are forced to do things differently because of the laws and because we don't have all the uv filters that korea has so it's it is coming out to our benefit because it's sparking creativity and coming to new innovation in new ways with the soothing agents which i love like you've seen ectoin yeah kate somerville just did a really cool spf mineral with ectoin super goop tint yeah heroic because of the ectoin yeah i can stop now but this is a big time okay i was to ask what your favorite spf is real quick what's your favorite spf under makeup both of you yeah you have a elf one to be honest yeah yeah oh yeah the one the little tube it's like yellow on it it's nice and thin yeah i like it's thin it's you put on you know it's nice and yeah yeah yeah pants and pockets yeah absolutely i'm like i feel like that one needs to be like triple tested to see if it really reaches the max but that's my you know what suspicious sally over here okay carlene's always yeah the skeptic you're not wrong yeah you're not i mean listen it's really going back to the testing is really hard there's so many different skin types that receive the sun yeah yeah yeah i i always think also with when you're talking about zinc oxide everybody listening just think about diaper rash cream that is what zinc oxide it's paste so if all of a sudden it seems a little too good to be true that your 20 zinc oxide on your face is completely sheer yeah it's watery and it's like water oh my god it feels like k-beauty sunscreen and they're claiming 20 it's like no yeah it's something is something is off something yeah yeah they'll have that percentage right but they will they will bring in all these other elements to it that make it sensorial but yeah we've seen a couple pulled yeah yeah yeah yeah i loved that one.
33:05Sheer, sheer, sheer zinc. Okay. Yeah. Okay. That's without a tent. Yeah. I feel like what, if it doesn't have a tent to it, it's questionable. And that's why we're seeing so many tints in the U S yes. So like, are we mad at the rules? Yeah. If they birth the new age, like I can't wait to get my hands on the new notorium. Yeah. That seems like it's going to be gorgeous. Okay. Yeah. You know that.
33:38pausing to shout out one of today's show partners nyx professional makeup you guys i literally just got off a zoom call with nyx global brand president dene pearson and let me tell you you guys are going to love the episode we have coming up with her because she's spilling all of the secrets behind nyx's absolute industry domination not only how they're the brand behind so many TikTok viral beauty products right now, but how they make their formulas so hashtag damn good and so affordable. It's got the Jumbo Doughfoot applicator I love. It's not sticky. It just gives me that luscious gloss. I like to wear it with lip liner. I mean, it's no wonder NYX Professional Makeup holds the spot as the number one gloss brand in the US today.

35:32Jumping in to share a word from one of our show partners this week, Equilibria. You know you're officially an adult when the group chat starts popping off about gut health, tips and tricks, fiber goals, kimchi recipes, and more. But seriously, I feel like once you understand good gut health, it's a powerful tool to unlock so many positive daily health benefits, whether that's keeping your energy levels up, stress down or digestion healthy. And beyond dietary supplements, I also like to take a probiotic to keep gut flora in balance. And one probiotic must that I just got my hands on is from Equilibria.
36:09It's called the Microbiome Defense. And it's not like all other probiotics. It's a cool probiotic, in my opinion. It's delivered via a special delayed release capsule that combines its proprietary Pacrin blend with five strains of probiotic that adds up to 25 billion CFU. So that helps to support women's unique digestive health and even helps manage vaginal pH and supports urinary tract health. And I love that it's low maintenance to take. You don't need to refrigerate it. Just one capsule a day. And it's vegan, it's soy free. And if you need a little bit of guidance, actually, I love this. Equilibria offers complimentary one-on-one support sessions to help you navigate your wellness journey.
36:56So if you'd like to learn more about getting your gut health in check, visit myeq.com. That's spelled M-Y-E-Q dot com and try out Equilibria's microbiome defense and much more for 25 % off with our code beauty. Once again, visit myeq.com and use our promo code beauty to get 25 % off. We'll link to this offer in our show notes and on our website. Now back to the show.
37:28I want to ask for the, you know, consumer geniuses, baby consumer geniuses out there. What do you make of reviews these days? What can you trust? What can you not trust? I don't know how much this falls into what you guys are all about, but you're insiders. What do you think? I think really early on, we established that when Alexis is going to be looking at a product and reviewing it online, it's really an evaluation. And it's really funny because we said we don't do product reviews, you do product evaluations. And I always used to see Alexis evaluate products throughout her whole career, you know, while I was in my career as well.
38:07And it was always really interesting for me because she can know upon her first impressions of a product how it's going to perform because she's evaluated so many on the manufacturing side. So I feel like from my perspective, a lot of what's happening on the Internet with these reviews are first impressions. But like how informed are these first impressions and are they going back to comparatively other products that they've evaluated before? because I know every time Alexis is doing it and definitely speak for yourself, too. She's always thinking about like a hundred other textures that she's felt before.
38:44And you have a really amazing sensory memory. I mean, that's what got us here in the first place, because like you're touching products two years before they launch. Yeah. So by the time they actually hit the shelves and you're touching it, you'll actually remember, oh, I touched that. Something similar. Yeah. You know, are you guys watching that show? Have you watched that show Drops of God? No, it's so good. It's about wine, but it's like these people who have like encyclopedic memories and they're basically like, I'm getting they're sniffing it and they're like, I'm getting that. You know, but it's like it's the leather sandals from the Romans in 1809.
39:18So I know it's from this area. You know what I mean? It's like that. There is an origin story. Like you can tell if you're a product developer, if you touch a powder. Yeah. Mostly, again, based on sensory memory. You can have an understanding because when you're evaluating, you're also evaluating against yourself on skin, but you're evaluating against 17 other things on your arm. So like when I often when we've done, we just did a milks comparison. Right. Yeah. Like the different milky toners, some that some that live in the land of lightweight moisturizer and some that are just pure toner. Yeah.
39:54Those evaluations have been happening behind the scenes. This is why it takes us time. So when we do our in-home content, it's one thing to do a comparison on your face live on camera and say, look, this is wearing this way and this is wearing this way because I used this on this side and this on the other. It's very different to have spent intimate time, done your little rating system, have our and and and live with the product in maybe some different climates, maybe different points of your cycle monthly. So nobody trains you to be a product developer. It's an inherent skill that you develop over time.
40:31And if you're lucky to have a mentor that's a rock star, they'll really turn you into an expert. And ultimately, it's about asking the right questions too. Always. And always, always having a hyper, hyper analytical eye. So the reviews that I see on the internet are people's experience of a product. Right. One, two, three, maybe five, ten times. you can like many things, but reviewing it is not going to be able to articulate whether or not the consumer genius is watching or wannabe consumer genius is watching can use it for themselves. Yeah. So we need to always give that information. It's a nonstop.
41:09What and how can you expect this to perform on dry skin, you know, oily skin, combo skin? And even that's not enough, but it's the best we got. Yeah. For a long time, you know, the understanding with insiders was like the best makeup in the world is made in Italy, possibly Germany. Is that still true? You talk about that a lot. Yeah. Yeah. Is that still true? I'm going to give you a pop quiz. What is Germany known for? Pencils. Yes. Yes. I was going to jump in. We'll make this a game show. Yeah. Yeah. So each, just like you walk into Sephora as brand connoisseurs and you have your favorite facets of what you buy from each brand, whether it's complexion from someone or I'm a Patrick Tablush girly because I like two in one, whatever that is.
42:03The product developers that have been doing this for five, 10 plus years, they have not just a region, but a specific branded manufacturer. right their favorite like a lot of times alexis is guessing the country of origin which is actually guessing the manufacturer right and not publicly calling them out which is not appropriate under any circumstance with those drops of god because you're picking up the foundation you're like yeah this is gonna be from france and i know that because and i'm just like sometimes yeah i'm wrong yeah and we have our fun you know we always and it's just it's fun it's part intuitive but it's also sensory memory.
42:39Because as a product developer, the reason that you know who's great for what, and I'll give you the rundown real quick. Yeah. After, like region-wise. The reason you know is because you go to about four shows a year minimum. Yeah. Not to mention how many times the manufacturers come to you when you're working on brand side. Or if you work in a manufacturer, you know, you still get exposed to tons of products. So you're seeing more product than anybody in the world. Yeah. Except for influencers, arguably. Yeah. Right. But they're seeing the finish good. They're seeing the finish good. But you're seeing it by region and that's fair.
43:09So you're saying so pencils from Germany. Pencils from Germany. What else? So Japan also does beautiful liquid liners. Yeah. Like flow through anything, whether it's brush tip, belt tip, Korea and Japan. Yeah. Yeah. So Japan, Japan is some of the most meticulous craftsmanship brushes. Yeah. Japan has the most meticulous craftsmanship. So Western Atelier's brushes made in Japan. Yeah. Ding, ding, ding. Winner. Phenomenal. Yeah, for sure. I'm loving this. Yes. Slurries. You will see Italy. You will see Canada. Primarily. So we're talking about eyeshadows? This could be, and this goes back to all the categories.
43:47Yeah. Any powder. Yeah, any powder. So powder can live in the land of, right. It can live in the land of complexion. It can live in the land of cheek. Technically, there's also lip powders too, but we won't confuse everybody. Okay. We are talking primarily, let's think about eyeshadow for our God's sake. Yeah. So is there for me, I do have personal favorites. Like I do have a preference and I tend to love an Italian eyeshadow slurry personally, but that doesn't mean the Canadian ones aren't very competitive. And Canada came out with like wet tech technology. Exactly. Like they were the first to innovate from what I understand.
44:20Yes, they have. And that's a manufacturer specific technology and they own that one specific manufacturer. Right. What's wet tech? It's a slightly different take on a slurry. OK. And now you're going to see next generation slurries that are going to involve like each country is going to put their signature into it as well. Right. But then there's, you know, I just saw What's Up Beauty had these crazy molds that they built these insane powders with that have more detail on them than I've ever seen before. And that's coming out of China. OK. So just to be clear, like you can have some wild cards.
44:54Yeah, yeah, yeah. You really can. I'm sure. But is wet tech like a wet to dry eyeshadow? Yes, you can do it. You can use it wet or dry. Okay. Exactly. I hear you. And again, manipulate the intensity of the texture as like one. And lastly, lipsticks. Lipsticks, USA, Italy, personal favorites for me. Like, but again, think about culturally, anyone from Asia is not going to love a U.S. lipstick because the Asian market has a preference towards, let's say, the soft stain, almost like soft stain, blur, different beauty kind of idea. Yeah. Yeah. Like these like wet glassy lip gloss. Yeah. Beauty. You want a high shine lip gloss that's more sheer than anything on the U.S.
45:38market. You can get 15 of them on YesStyle, you know, anything. K-Beauty cushions. Yeah. K-Beauty anything with rice, you know, rice brand extracted. Yeah. Yeah. K-Beauty texture leaders. What's next in K-Beauty? What's going to be the big thing? because TikTok is like suddenly discovering Korean beauty. Fine. What are they going to be all over next? I was like, I mean, I've got to, I think we're going to start to see what, what I'm calling like globalization, hybridization, which is the best of K-beauty be North Americanized. Yeah. It's funny. As we were talking earlier, I was thinking the same thing.
46:13It's, it's the globalization because like, I just used a beautiful essence this morning, which was Neil's yard out of the UK. And if I was blindfolded and I was looking at it, it would be K beauty. It's like bouncy. It's, you know, so that globalization is, they're duping it. They're duping it. Now one country I did not hear in this roundup was France. Oh, France. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. Oh, that's okay. Don't be mad. Yeah. France, France just did, you know, Fenty's new hydrating concealer. Thin, beautiful, lovely texture, right? What are they known for? France is just to me, it's like the birthplace of beauty and a very like sophisticated lens.
46:55Yeah. You know, it's like for skincare, I think. And skincare. Yeah. But they still do. I think about Violette France, who's bringing the French girl beauty style lover to North America and doing it in a way that's still honoring kind of French heritage. Some of her stuff's made in the USA. But again, it's made in the spirit of France. Yeah. And I think they do do skincare well. They do do complexion well. Fragrance, obviously. Fragrance, obviously. And I was just about to say, there's going to be a lot of fragrance in those products. Yeah. That is the French. Yeah. That's right. Non-negotiable.
47:30Yeah. Right. Yeah. That's right. When they couldn't shower, when they were dancers at the opera at the side, the perfume was born. Yeah. OK. We have time for one more question. we're putting you on the hot seat let's have some fun trying to predict the future here so what makeup trends do you think we'll see specifically in 2025 if we can get specific like what product do you think is going to be on our top shelf i think we're going to see like sensoriality to the max and way less pigment and way more buildable sheer prettier like blushes that have more of a sheer veil to them instead of all these high pigment high gloss right i feel like we always hit an inflection point and i think it's going to be very much like everything that we've seen have these maxed out pigment loads we're going to start to see like the softer side of those maxed out pigment loads i think we're going to start to see skin tints in a pan oh like a new take on a gel cushion because now tear tear has brought cushions to north america about this yesterday yeah trust in radiance apparently trust in radiance yep worked on me.
48:38It is a like North American mindset of a cushion because it's high coverage. Exactly. Really easy to use. So like but I do see like skin tints in the pan. I do see way more skin like skincare infusion in these lip products like lip oil. Yeah. Like really skincare. Yeah. Like clinically tested. Clinically tested like we were talking about and like category by category. Right. Like, where do I see? Like, we're still going to be fire hot in the lip category. That doesn't go away. But like bullets aren't coming back anytime soon. Like the classic bullet style lipstick, I feel like is still. Yeah. We're still not quite there yet where we're going to fall back in love with it.
49:19I think we're going to have a deeper romance with these these interesting textures from Korea. Yeah. And these like I was just trying the Judy doll transfer proof. I shine. But it's more sheer than traditional. OK, that's actually. yeah it's a it's made in china but it's super interesting and like cool yeah so i think it's the mashup of the gold yeah we're still we're still obsessed with like textures and sensorial i feel like too i think we're also going to see cool packaging like we've seen some really amazing stuff with the manufacturers presented in packaging that's like super exciting that obviously we can't talk about but i think like if that stuff launches well it's like viral worthy but who's ready to launch it that's the big question i know yeah yeah carlene okay thank you so much to alexis and christina the lipstick lesbians for sharing all of your wisdom with us we are so thrilled to meet both of you and learn from you i learned so much and i know that our audience will really appreciate everything so thank you so much thank you so much thank you for having us thanks for listening you can find details on every product mentioned in today's episode along with our exclusive promo codes on our blog at breakingbeautypodcast.com while you're there be sure to sign up for our newsletter every episode will be delivered directly to your inbox so you won't miss a single thing and get social with us let us know what you think of the episode you can follow us on instagram at breaking beauty podcast and did you know we also have a private Facebook group.
