0:21Welcome back to Breaking Beauty podcast, everyone. The podcast about the breakthrough people, products and moments in beauty. I'm your co-host, Carlene Higgins, and I'm here with the best co-host ever, Jill Dunn. Hey, everyone. Hey, Carlene. And our regular listeners know that we are two longtime magazine beauty editors turned beauty podcasters. We've been in your feeds for nine years at this point. But if it is your first time here, maybe you're discovering us because of our guests today. We have a catalog of more than 400 episodes. We interview the top thought leaders in beauty, whether that's a dermatologist like Dr.

0:56Shereen Idris, makeup artists like Makeup by Mario, hairstylists like Jen Atkin, or some big celeb names like Hailey Bieber, Tracee Ellis Ross, Sarah Michelle Gellar recently. And we're thrilled to welcome another A-lister today. Her name is Lily Reinhart. You may know her as Betty Cooper from Riverdale. She, of course, is an actress, a producer and the founder of Personal Day, which she launched in 2024. In less than a year, Personal Day has earned over 10 national beauty awards, plus a coveted spot in over 700 Ulta Beauty stores. And we had the privilege of sitting down with Lily in person in our LA studios.

1:39So be sure to watch this on our YouTube channel, which is at Breaking Beauty Podcast. So find us on there, like, comment, share with a friend. We love welcoming new friends to our show. I have to say you're in for a treat because Lily really surprised me. You just sometimes you never know with a celebrity and a beauty brand, you know, how guarded they're going to be or how much they're willing to go there. And she was very straightforward, not a talking head at all. You guys are going to love this chat. And if you're not familiar with Personal Day, It is a brand that is on the rise. It's gone viral on TikTok for a couple of products, one of them being the Blackhead Melting Strips and also the Hypochlorous Spray.

2:21And I'm sure it helps that everything is under$40. It's not just Lily in the lab creating all these products. She has an advisory board. They have a certified dermatologist as well as a psychotherapist. And that combo is really all about educating and informing the product development. But the realities of living with breakouts and acne because that can be a hit to the confidence. So I love that they have this combo on the advisory board. Yeah. And Lily relates to this topic herself personally. She has a following on social media of over 24 million followers on Instagram alone. And of course, just being under the bright lights, being on shows like Riverdale, she definitely knows what it's like to have the spotlight on your skin 24-7.

3:07And Carleen, I was obsessed with Lily Reinhart in the movie Hustlers. She stole every scene from J-Lo and she's also building a career as a producer. She has small victory productions. She's starring in a lot of upcoming films like the witchy ensemble feature called Forbidden Fruits, the horror comedy that's coming out later this month that also stars Emma Chamberlain. And we play a fun game of rapid fire with Lily. That's all about if it's forbidden or or not. So stay tuned to the end for that. Yes. And we also discuss how Lily navigates the intense pressures of Hollywood. This is a pressure that she's been very candid about previously in relation to body image.

3:45And so we really go deep on how she's using her influence now, even as a producer to impact her team. This is a beauty podcast. So we're going to find out what is on Lily's top shelf when it comes to makeup, hair products as someone who has also been vocal about having alopecia herself. We find out what is the number one favorite product from personal day that helps her keep her acne at bay. And we find out what keeps her grounded beyond beauty products. Everything that we mentioned today will be linked on our website at breakingbeautypodcast.com. And please share this episode with a friend. 7:37Welcome to Breaking Beauty Podcast, Lily. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. Thanks for having me. I'm so excited that this day has arrived. And congrats on Personal Day because that's your brand. It launched about a year ago. Just over a year ago. Yeah, we just had our first birthday. It's so exciting. Let's fill our listeners in on what the story was, why you wanted to create this brand. Oh, gosh. Well, I'm primarily an actor. and I feel like at a certain point, just to be blunt about it, in like an actor or performer's career,

8:11Lili Reinhart:people come to you and say, do you want to start a brand? And I said, no. This was, I don't know, five years ago. I said, no, because I don't want to have a brand just to have a brand. And I think that's like, I'm the first person to call out when there's something not authentic happening between the face of something and then a product if there's no organic relationship. So anyways, no one had said skincare, like that idea wasn't brought up. I just kind of was like, it doesn't really interest me. I'm still building my career as an actor. I want to keep just charging down that road. And then kind of a couple years go by and the idea of a skincare line came about.

8:48Lili Reinhart:And I'm not even really sure from who, but I think it was honestly, I had been and have been vocal about acne since I was 19 and I'm 29 now. And it always, always, always resonated with my following. And I think it's because I had a lot of young women and had women who follow me. And I was on Riverdale, the show that I was on, posting about my skin in real time while being on the show. And I think I never expected anything to come out of it, but I wanted to. I'm someone who feels better about things when I share my experiences. I don't want to feel alone. And so I started talking about my acne and how I felt very isolated looking around.

9:31Lili Reinhart:And I was the only one who had bad acne on my show in my 20s. It made me feel bad. And so I was sort of looking for a little bit of community online. And I found it through my own fan base, which was incredible. and I think so then years later when the idea of a skincare line came about it actually made a lot of sense yeah uh not because I'm a dermatologist but because I have a platform with which I think I could really help spread the word of a brand that had an important message and ours quickly turned into personal day as a brand that's free of acne triggering ingredients for acne prone and sensitive skin people in mind.

10:15Lili Reinhart:Anyone and everyone can use it, but it's for people with skin like me who really have to be careful about what they use on a day-to-day basis. And that's kind of was the birth of it. But it took many years and I said no a few times and rolled my eyes at the idea of just putting something out there that already existed. I didn't want to do that. And then when I found out that I could create these products that actually really added something to the market in terms of not just overcrowding it, but creating its own little section of, oh, this can actually be something really trustworthy for people to know, oh, this line is completely safe for my skin.

10:52Lili Reinhart:That was really appealing to me. And that's where it was like the light bulb. Oh, let's go. Green light moment for me as the founder. I appreciate your honesty because I don't think it's been that it's talked about that often that things just come across your desk when you do get to be a certain profile or you have a certain following. And there are a lot of people that just say, yeah, why? You see the rev share and you're like, okay, fine. I think maybe they don't know how much work it's going to be. Touche. Because I didn't. I really didn't. And I think in hindsight would have been, I'm like, someone maybe should have told me.

11:28But I don't regret it. And it's a huge part of my life now. It's like it's a major pillar of my career that I five years ago, I never thought ever would be in this position. So it's been a, you know, just an insane trajectory that I didn't expect to find myself on. I think a lot of people relate to the story that you were talking about with struggling with acne and especially now with social media. Oh, my goodness. It's like everybody is in front of a camera to a certain extent. What were some of the solutions that you tried, the DIY solutions? Everything.

12:04Lili Reinhart:I got acne when I was 12 and it was cystic. So I would get a beautifully large pimple in the center of my forehead. That was a reoccurring one for me. She was there all the time. And then I would have blackheads and congestion and little pimples here and there, but I would get big, angry ones. And so I went to the dermatologist when I was young and dermatologists are very hit or miss for me. I think like a lot of doctors, I have a lot of health issues, so I have to see a lot of doctors all the time. And I've, especially in the last few years, really have had to like kind of regain some trust in the medical field.

12:46Yeah, anyways. It's kind of exhausting when you have to constantly like advocate for yourself. Yeah. You go into the office and you're like, I got to ask these questions and whatever. It's a lot.

12:54Lili Reinhart:It's a lot and knowing, waiting for an appointment in and in the room, sometimes you can get caught up and then you leave and you go, wait, I have 30 questions, but I can't just like call them up and ask. But I tried, I got facials every now and then when I was a kid. And I remember the mirror when I was a teenager, getting up from the table and looking in the mirror and thinking, oh, my acne is going to be gone, but it wasn't. And it was still there. And I went on birth control and I went on spironolactone and I didn't go on Accutane until my 20s, which I ended up going on twice. It came back with a vengeance and much worse, actually.

13:30Lili Reinhart:And a completely different type of acne. It came back, which is so weird. But I tried everything. And also at this point in my life, I was working six days a week, 15 hours a day with like heavy foundation and powder on my face every all day long. so the acne was not getting any better. And it really came down to my day-to-day products because I could do lasers and I could do facials and treatments and whatever and go home with a topical that probably won't work because these prescription topicals like don't usually work for me. But it really wasn't until I started working with my esthetician whose name is Sarah Ford and she's here in Beverly Hills.

14:11Lili Reinhart:And she suggested to me that I needed to start looking at the ingredients of my skincare, which sounded, seems obvious when you say it out loud like we are, but it was not obvious to me. And I just trusted that what I was using was not going to harm me. And certainly if it were expensive, that wouldn't break me out. And then looking at the ingredients actually more closely, it's full of acne triggers. Once I got rid of those products that I had, which was hard because I love products. But when I got rid of all of those, my skin had the biggest transformation. in years because I was realizing what I was using on a daily basis was actively flaring me.

14:51Lili Reinhart:Yeah. Yeah. Fair. That's the sad truth of it. There's so many products out there, but it's like the less you do sometimes the better because there's a lot of things that people do that are not right for them. That's a huge part of it. So your line has been out for a year and you have the two products that have already gone viral, the hypochlorous acid spray and the blackhead melting strips, which sounds like that just sounds like something that I want to try. What's the secret sauce behind like going viral on TikTok and then converting that into real world sales? Because this is something as a brand founder you have to think about now.

15:28Lili Reinhart:Yeah, I would like to say we definitely don't approach product development as what's going to go viral, I think we'd have a lot crazier products. I think it's just more so we take products, sometimes products that already exist, like there are blackhead strips, but these are, instead of ripping your skin off your face, they're melting the dirt in your pores so then you can squeeze them out. So it's like taking something that already exists, but making it a lot better, eliminating the triggers and like elevating the technology behind it. Yeah. I'm here for that. Yeah. And that seems, I mean, that really resonated with, you could just rip it.

16:08I need to see what these look like, everybody.

16:11Lili Reinhart:Yeah. So they're wet. You want to open it? Oh, sure. And they come with a little extractor tool, which if you don't have one, I feel like most people have a little extractor tool. Maybe not. One looks very legitimate, though. So, yeah, you would rest that right here. Open up your little pore strip. So it's wet and it does not dry. Oh, okay. So it stays wet. So I will... For example, when I use this on my boyfriend and I torture him, I put it on his nose for 15-ish minutes. And then there's a lot of liquid in here. Like you can squeeze. It's kind of like a sheet mask for your blackhead. It looks like a sheet mask.

16:50Lili Reinhart:And so it has nanotechnology that's working to melt the dirt that make up the blackheads so that they come out so easily. So when you let it, does it dry? No, it stays wet. So it stays wet. Okay, so when you do this to your boyfriend, what's your process? You put it on. Well, I say take a shower. Yeah, okay, I like it. Steam to open up your pores. And then I literally have a... You're like, lie down and let me get this tool. No, we do it on the bed. I have a headlamp from Amazon. Wow. And I... Yes, there's photos of this that will not be released. and I have my little light and I lay him in front of me.

17:33His head goes on my lap. I don't know. He's probably I'm like, would he care that I'm saying this?

17:37Lili Reinhart:I don't know. Probably not. And then I and then I put the thing, the strip on his nose and it sits there for 15 minutes after the shower. And then that's the tool. You know, you can use that tool. I take a little like a flat, more spatula like tool and I will. The most satisfying thing. And why is it more satisfying to do it on someone else? Well, you know. It's satisfying to do it on guys. Yeah. They just have like bigger pores. Yeah. That's true. And they come out so easily. Really? It's like I've truly, if I could back a product right now, it's the nose strips. It's incredible. I'm just going to throw at some ingredients.

18:17Licorice root extract is in there. Azelaic acid. Camellia sinensens. I don't know how to say that. Anyways. Camellia sinensis. leaf extract tea tree extract and lemon fruit extract so that's what's in there that's what's in there okay it's also called unplug which i think is brilliant they unplug blackhead melting nose strips thank you i love this i think with there's a thing with with people who have acne and i used to have white heads when i was a teenager but there's something about like the satisfaction of seeing something come out.

18:56Lili Reinhart:Oh, I was on, I think pimplepoppingvideos.com. Growing up. No, popthatzit.com, I think. And don't quote me on that, but I think that was it. And I was so addicted to those videos. And this was in time before TikTok. And like, it was a little bit harder to find that specific thing, which is disgusting and so satisfying. I'm not I'm honestly not as into it now that I'm older. Yeah. But when I and I would like do it to my little sister, too, in real time. She was probably I was like a little aggressive. I was like, I'm getting those blackheads on your chin and on your nose and there's nothing you can do about it.

19:35Yeah. You also have the hypochlorous acid. Yeah. Spray, which everybody loves. So how do you use that? And we have a gel version.

19:42Lili Reinhart:But this way I have four of them sitting around my house at all times, kind of in like all the rooms. I use it throughout the day. I use it almost as a makeup setter in a way. Not that it sets the makeup, but it just makes me feel like, okay, I did my makeup and now I can spray to get rid of the bacteria if there is any. So it's antibacterial spray and it's non-drying, alcohol-free, and there's no fragrance. And it has a really fine mist, which is so nice over makeup. But I also will do it after I wash my face. It just feels like a nice reset and eliminates redness and irritation. so right now I have perioral dermatitis and seb derm which is what my Dr.

20:24Lili Reinhart:Romina who's on our board I asked her advice the other day seborratic dermatitis I think was the name yes so she called it seb derm and I have that around my nose and I've kind of always had that and apparently it's like basically just rosacea and our products work really nicely for people who have it's my skin type and skin like that. So I've been trying some things, but I'll, you know, spray the mist of hypochlorous all day long a few times. And it's absolutely helped take the redness and like fiery kind of itchiness away from that. Yeah. I think a lot of people use that type of spray after the gym as well.

20:58I mean, there's so many uses. You can spray it on your smelly shoes.

21:04Lili Reinhart:People use it for the keratosis on the back of their arms. There's a lot. There's lots of use, but definitely after the gym for sure any kind of sweaty I went to the doctor today and I used it after I got out of the gross office yeah it's a handy little pocket size version that that I got which is great and you have something new yeah this is our soft slip priming milk and it's in our nice little we just this is our first product in an ivory bottle lovely introducing different colors and this is I'm very excited about this I used this all summer when I was shooting a movie in Montreal y 'all. It was my makeup primer.

21:40Lili Reinhart:So it is a priming milk. So you use it under makeup or just on its own if you're going foundation free. But it creates a really hydrated base for product makeups, makeup product. And I find that there's sort of this myth that if you have acne, you can't have like a dewy look to your skin because it needs to be matte. You need to hide things. You need to powder things. And I understand because a lot of products that do cause a dewy glow are full of really bad triggers. So that makes sense. So we wanted to create, obviously, the acne safe version that people with acne prone skin can have a dewy, really beautifully hydrated base without feeling like they're going to break out the second they take their makeup off.

22:30And how are you using this in your routine? Like what step of your routine and stuff?

22:35Lili Reinhart:I feel like, so I use my cleanser, let's say in the morning, I'll use my cleanser and my powder cleanser. And then I'll use my moisturizer. And then before I start my makeup, I'll put this all over. And then it's really good to use with like, I use a firm, like a tightening wand or whatever, an LED. It's like a microcurrent device and a skin sculpting device. And I'll use, this actually helps glide the machine on my face. So I'll use it. That's like my, I don't use that every day, the machine. But, and I also don't use this every single day. I definitely use it before makeup though. And if I just want my skin to look really dewy without a foundation.

23:23Lili Reinhart:Okay. Do you notice the machine really helps? Like, do you notice a difference? I feel like it's more long-term use. You have to be really consistent. And I don't, I'm really poorly disciplined usually when it comes to stuff like any extra going above and beyond. Yeah. It's sort of hard for me to do. But basic skincare, yes, I'm very consistent and disciplined. But the machine, eh, I'll do it on like the day of an event. Or when I'm shooting, I'm really good about it. Yeah.

25:53You've been very candid and, you know, in today's conversation and in the past about being in the spotlight and on Riverdale, you've talked about body dysmorphia and eating disorder as well. what advice would you have for actors or even content creators because like I said there's so many of them who are in front of the camera too and putting a lot of pressure on themselves I think

26:17Lili Reinhart:we're all in front of a camera whether we kind of want to be or not I think even the people who aren't on social are being photos of them are being taken just sort of it's sort of like I saw this on TikTok, it's like we're really in a time of ultimate surveillance. Everything you do is somewhere on camera somewhere. And it's scary, but also, God, I think it's sucked the fun out of a lot. I think, what was I watching? I was watching this Amazon Prime movie called Hedda. And I don't know what it's in the early, I don't know what it is, if it's the 1940s or 50s. And it made me think about how fun parties must have been back then when there was no one ever possibly, you could never have a photo taken of you in that setting.

27:12Lili Reinhart:And how I think the fact that we're constantly being videotaped and photographed has really made us so much less free as people. And I think it really sucks. But I think it's sort of the age, it's our currency is being on camera. It's how so many people make a living. It's how I make a living. But also, I love that it's given the opportunity for people to make a living from their living room. I think that's incredible. You know, people can buy a house because they're making videos in their bedroom. That's insane. in a great way. But I also do see a big downside to it. And I see recently actually a lot of conversation about, not because I'm looking for it, it'll just pop up on my feed, but like influencers losing weight and how some people feel like they're entitled to be told whether a creator is on Ozempic or something.

28:09Lili Reinhart:And I also think we're living in a time of severe entitlement because if someone's putting themselves on camera, I think it's assumed then that they need to tell you everything that's going on in their life. And I just think it's a big misunderstanding and that you should be able to be present on camera without owing people an explanation. But I think, I mean, I say like, show yourself to whatever degree you're comfortable. And I think I've put boundaries up around even like logistical things. Like if you're in my house, my friends know not to just take a photo of my front door or my garage. You know, it's like literal safety reasons why you can't share certain things when we're together.

28:56But also in terms of, I think, how you look.

29:00Lili Reinhart:I really, I personally try not to be, you know, someone takes a photo of me. I usually don't say, oh, let me see it. Like, let me make sure it's okay. I kind of just try to let it be. And I think subconsciously it's a bit like if I don't control how other people on the street see me. So if you take a photo of me, that's how I looked in that moment. And I don't really want to be perceived as curated and perfect all the time because I'm absolutely not. And I cannot live up to that expectation. So I think it's almost sort of a protective measure of I don't want to live up to an expectation that I can't uphold.

29:38Lili Reinhart:And even I got sent photos today of a shoot that's coming out tomorrow and I'm like, I don't look like that. I mean, I do, I guess, when I have two hours of hair and makeup, but I almost I feel sort of silly sometimes when I post these photos because it's truly doesn't feel like me. It's like, OK, here's this photo that you guys can like and say you think I look hot. And that's just so not what I look like on a day to day basis. But it's a part of the job, I guess. But I guess I would never want to present myself as this 24-7, gorgeously made-up person because, holy hell, I would just never live up to that.

30:20Lili Reinhart:That's a lot of pressure. Yeah, you would never leave the house. Yeah. Well, thank you for your candid response. That's, I think, really important for people to hear. and looking ahead this year you're set to star in Forbidden Fruits with an ensemble cast that includes Lola Tung from The Summer I Turn Pretty, Emma Chamberlain who I love and I guess that's her debut in film which is incredible and I'm really excited because this is kind of like charmed practical magic right is that what you would say so what's that been like? That was such a fun it's a movie that I was attached to for two years before we shot which usually I mean there is no usual in filmmaking I don't know anymore I just I was attached for two years and it was incredibly fun and challenging in the sense that it was mostly nights so I was showing up to work at 8 p.m.

31:16Lili Reinhart:and driving home during morning rush hour at 9 a.m. Wow so in that sense it was incredibly challenging. But in the filming sense, I had so much fun and love the character so much. And it's so fun to me that we sort of, you know, it's like feels very secretive. And sometimes people are sharing. Another movie I did this year, I was posting videos while I was shooting and it was not secretive at all. But this one actually feels very secretive. And like no one knows what I look like in the movie and no one knows anything really. So it feels fun to be a part of something that's totally secret until it's already over with.

31:55And it's like your opinion doesn't matter. It's already filmed and there's no changing it. So that will be coming out in

32:01Lili Reinhart:spring 2026. But that's a very, yeah, it's a witchy. Did you guys see Jennifer's body? Yeah. So it's in the comedic vein of Jennifer's body type of humor, which I love. love and so does it have like a y2k type of a vibe or y2k like the way that gen z more it feels more gen z than millennial okay yeah what would i mean early 2000 no i mean i'm thinking back to those to those movies like the craft and like yeah i would say definitely definitely that Was anyone wearing chokers? Me, for sure. I definitely was. That was a good call out. Okay, there you go. Okay. I'm excited to see the movie whenever it does come out.

32:48Thank you. What's the biggest myth, beauty myth, about celebrity beauty or like on-set skin care? Just that everyone has good skin. Yeah. It's such, I mean, I've seen it. My skin sucked. And even, you know, I feel like I do this a lot. I also have OCD.

33:06Lili Reinhart:So when I'm feeling super insecure about something on my body, that's the first thing I look at on someone else. So if I have a large pimple, the first thing I'm looking at when I talk to anybody is their skin and like that area of their face. What's going on there? And I zero in on it. And I think a lot of I was doing that a lot in my early 20s and I was being exposed to celebrities and famous people all the time around me and I was looking at their skin. and I a lot of them have gorgeous skin like I feel like a lot of a lot of them do they really do their skin's beautiful they're being they get facials all the time they have top dermatologists working on them whatever but there's a lot of people who don't have great skin and yet online it seems as if they do yeah so you know I just think especially now today you never know what what someone's skin actually looks like.

34:03Lili Reinhart:And of course, if you can hide a big pimple, you're going to with a filter or something. Or with two hours of glam. I mean, yeah, or lighting or whatever. I just think it was a big myth that celebrities have perfect skin.

34:26today's episode is brought to you in part by merit so as you guys know we try so many products here at breaking beauty and people often ask me what is the makeup that's really in my makeup bag there's always going to be something from merit merit beauty believes great makeup should be effortless. And that just fits with my lifestyle. I'm lazy slash busy. And I really appreciate thoughtfully curated essentials like what Merit offers that helps me to look polished in just a few minutes. When I'm going out the door, I'm not great at washing my makeup brushes. So if I can apply it with my fingers, that is a bonus.

35:05Let me give you one example. The Minimalist from Merit. This product is, oh, it gives you that polished natural look in minutes. It's not quite a foundation, not quite a concealer, but it kind of replaces both. It gives you natural coverage. You can just spread it with your fingers and it blends in perfectly with a seamless finish. It's like a kind of a pencil or a chunky pencil type of a idea. So it doesn't take up too much room if you want to throw it in your purse. And people are just in love with their flush bombs as well. That gives you a natural, healthy glow without overdoing it. And one was actually sold every 30 seconds in 2024.

35:46That's how good it is. I feel like for people who aren't kind of professional makeup artists, aren't great at doing their makeup, this is like that basically you can't mess it up at all with anything from Merit. I'm obsessed with their lip liners as well. And right now Merit Beauty is offering our listeners their signature makeup bag with your first order at MeritBeauty.com. That's M-E-R-I-T Beauty.com to get your free signature makeup bag. It's so cute, you guys, with your first order. That's MeritBeauty.com. Sephora is one of our show partners this week. I love going into a Sephora store and chatting up their knowledgeable beauty advisors.

36:29I honestly feel like the beauty advisors at Sephora are kind of like mini beauty editors. And the reason is they are getting training from so many different brands. They just have so much knowledge to share, no matter what your skin type is. So for me, I'm oily skin. I'm always asking the Sephora beauty advisors, like what's the best sunscreen that's flying off the shelves for oily skin? Or if you have specific questions about retinol, you want to get on a retinol routine that you don't want to quit. Or if you're just looking for barrier health and barrier protection. They really have so many incredible brands under one roof.

37:02And you can trust that the Sephora beauty advisors are going to know which direction to point you in. And Sephora really is that skincare authority. So they have top brands, of course, like Summer Fridays. They have Rode. I love that you can shop the Rode glazing milk at Sephora now. It makes it so easy. Of course, they have Laneige, which is like the queen of K-beauty. There's so many skincare products from Laneige that I love. And also from Caudalie. And Caudalie is a French skincare darling and they have products, whether you're acne prone or normal skin, or if you want to get into an anti-aging routine, Caudalie has you covered at all.

37:37They really have so many incredible brands under one roof. And you can trust that the Sephora beauty advisors are going to know which direction to point you in. Sephora really is that skincare authority. So in the overwhelming world of skincare, shop Sephora. You can shop skincare at Sephora now and in-store.

38:02You have a lot of projects coming up for 2026. What's the most important piece of mental health advice or self-care that you practice to keep the balance when things feel kind of overwhelming or you have a bad day?

38:14Lili Reinhart:I always am trying something new, which I appreciate about myself for some someone who's struggled with depression since I was really, really young, I think something I can say is that I never stop trying to find solutions or things that ease the struggle. So meaning I've never in my life done any work with neuroplasticity of my brain up until a week ago. So that's something that I just started diving into about, you know, your thought patterns you have repetitively over and over for years and years and years. And then it's trying to change those patterns to be more positive or more whatever you want them to be.

38:59Lili Reinhart:And so it's actually working with your the brain itself and thought patterns. And that's something that I haven't done before that I just started trying. So it's just new, different, innovative ways after years of regular talk therapy just kind of didn't cut it for me anymore. And then I did a lot of spiritual work, which I still do. And now I'm trying. I'm like, let's tackle the real problem, which is my freaking brain. Yeah. So where does one go to try to retrain your brain? I mean, I'm working with a friend and she works with big founders and people and a lot of business people who want to and can, you know, handle the price tag.

39:44Lili Reinhart:Yeah. Doing that, I didn't want to come off as one. It's an investment. But I, but yeah, she was helping me out a little bit and I'm excited to keep pursuing that work because I find it really fascinating. Yeah, that's fascinating. Do you have any examples that you could share? I don't know if you're willing to share, but. Well, I think just like a good example of how I started to view it and how I've seen people talk about it is it's almost like the thoughts that you, like let's say uh if you think you're unlucky like i have bad luck i have bad luck and you've been thinking that since you were seven you're gonna have like visually kind of imagine it as a ski slope of like these this track of ski that your brain just immediately is going to follow that track because it's been indented in the snow already thousands and thousands of times so that's just immediately where your thoughts are going to go something bad happens oh i'm unlucky there it is going down the hill.

40:39Lili Reinhart:And so it's a matter of kind of stopping the thought and thinking and turning it on its head and creating that new neural pathway. And it's hard. I mean, I catch myself because I'm kind of in the thick of doing the work. So today, especially, I've noticed my, I'm very pessimistic by nature. That's just my brain's path. And so today, especially, I've been trying to stop myself right when it happens and think the opposite thought, just to help not make that the immediate reaction of my brain. And maybe eventually it'll take the positive path immediately. That's the goal. I wonder if that friend of yours has a family discount.

41:21A friends and family discount. For my entire family. And sorry, the person that you're working with, what's her name? Amina Zamani. Okay. She has a little Instagram. Immediate follow. And are you still working at like dabbling in Reiki? Because I read that you actually weren't just like undergoing Reiki, but training to be.

41:44Lili Reinhart:I'm a Reiki master. You are. Oh my gosh. Tell me about that. I did that in 20, I started that journey in 2020. And I think, when did I, I think, I think I didn't become a Reiki master until 2021 or 2022. I think maybe it took me two years just because I took some, there's three levels and I took three levels of training with the women I was working with. And it took me two years to like, again, I'm not very disciplined, so to actually do it. And that was just, I mean, again, it came out of talk therapy wasn't doing it anymore. And COVID hit and I was going through a breakup and I wanted to do something that felt deeper than just traditional therapy.

42:27Lili Reinhart:And so I had had Reiki done to me a few years prior and really liked the experience. And it felt just sort of like the next level of, let me just try this. And it was really, really fun learning process of learning how to do it. And I actually don't, I do not practice it as much as I should, but I've actually been very good about meditating the last month and getting back into it. I do it when I'm doing an LED face mask because it's warm and it sort of is, I mean, it's bright and it's sort of like tricks my brain into thinking that I'm doing something because I think if I just lay there and close my eyes, I would never be able to lay there for 30 minutes.

43:06Lili Reinhart:Well, unless I'm trying to fall asleep, but I'm a horrible sleeper. So that's also a hard process. But I think because I have an LED light, it actually makes it easier to get into that zone and the warmth helps. Yeah. Yeah. Very cool. That's a whole other episode. Yeah. Exactly. And what about your makeup? I'm staring at your eye makeup right now oh what is it it's makeup by mario palette yeah the ethereal eyes one oh no that's the sparkly yeah no i do have that one but i actually in my just in the last couple years i cannot wear like any sparkles on my eyes i have the most sensitive eyes in my eyes the next day i'll wake up and they'll be uh like closed shut from wow you're kidding wow no it's found that out two years ago on new year's eve oh oh after wearing sparkly the night before i went to urgent care oh my gosh and they gave my yeah i'm one it's like i think my right eye was completely puffed up and like half closed and it wasn't like yucky and crusty or anything it was just you're like yeah something's not right here so sometimes i'll wake up and i can feel that my eyes are already swollen and I'll, I don't know, use some ice or I have like those heated eye packs that are really nice.

44:26Lili Reinhart:But yeah, I just have horribly sensitive eyes. So what mascara do you find makes the grade for you in terms of sensitive eyes? I like a lot of mascara. I do like Armani mascara and I like Dior and Hourglass. Yeah. Those are the ones right now. If you were to look in your makeup bag, what would the foundation be that does make the grade? I love Shiseido. I also on Riverdale in the last the latter seasons, once I was looking at the ingredients, liked House Labs. I found that that was non-comedogenic. But I right now use and it's really hard to find something that has no triggering ingredients. So I'm like, I'll let one slide.

45:07Lili Reinhart:One ingredient can slide if it doesn't like cause an insane reaction. So I use Shiseido right now. I have my Dior mascara. I have my Makeup by Mario palette. I have what I just tried. Oh, no, a House Labs blush, a little cream. I like a little cream blush. What am I using for? I use my Charlotte Tilbury, like the Duo bronzer. I don't really use highlighter on a daily basis, but I keep, and then I use like an Anastasia or Hourglass brow. Yeah. That's what's in there. And what about your hair care routine? Because I believe you've shared before that you were diagnosed with alopecia as well. So how have you worked with that and just making sure that you feel good about, you know, having the good hair days too?

45:54My hair is rough.

45:54Lili Reinhart:My hair is actually like a big sore spot in my life. I hate my hair and I and it sounds really harsh, but I like stand I stand by it. I think it's something that I hope when I'm older I can heal one thing at a time. Yeah, exactly. I'm like still working on the skin. Yes. I get to hair like postpartum or something. Yeah, yeah. A few years ago, my hair started falling out. I had lost a lot of weight after getting off of antidepressants and birth control. And then it just kind of never really got better. Like it started falling out and it goes in waves. So when it was at its worst, I would be afraid to brush my hair.

46:39But when I would, I would, I mean, I would put my hand through my hair and like put it straight into the trash can because so much was falling out.

46:47Lili Reinhart:That is traumatizing. It's scary. It's really scary. And I did a lot of PRF and PRP on my scalp, which is so painful. It's insane. It's the taking your own plasma from your blood and injecting it all over your head. And I think it was it was kind of good in slowing the process of shedding, but it wasn't a cure by any means. And it is so painful that I'm like, I know I should probably do it again, actually. But I'm like to get me to go into that office again. I don't know. Because you have to do multiple sessions to see results. So it's needles or microneedling? It's needles. It's injections one at a time.

47:26I've heard that you can do it with microneedling. You probably can. Maybe that will be less painful. Maybe something to look into. But so like hair care. I mean, I try. I'm like, I wish I was actually just thinking the other day.

47:39Lili Reinhart:I'm like doing all these podcasts and stuff and I never know what to do with my goddamn hair. I'm just like, let me get it out of my face, I guess, and put it in a claw clip. Because I have naturally extremely frizzy and wavy hair. Okay. But it's not like cute waves and it's not cute frizz. It's just bad. And then it's really like I have quite thin hair at the end. So it's like quite thick at the top now that I've done my PRP. and then it's like really thin at the bottom. So like I wouldn't want to walk around with my hair straight without extensions. I mean, I do, sometimes I do, but sometimes it just makes me feel a little self-conscious because of how thin it is.

48:20Lili Reinhart:So usually I'll wear it up when I'm doing it myself because I don't have good hair. I just like want to get it out of the way. But I like Shoe Yumura. Been a big fan for a while. And I use some Kevin Murphy products, but I think I'm like a shoe girl. Yeah, they're like amazing. It treats the hair like fabric. I love the Ultimate Remedy mask and the moisture mask. And then I actually just started this year using a Kerastase thing for shedding. I don't know what it's called, but it's like in a little dropper and I put it on my scalp the night before I'm going to shower and wash my hair the next day because I'm not going to walk around with my scalp all gross.

49:01Lili Reinhart:But yeah. Very French girl moment to do that. Do you always work with the same hair person and same makeup person? I know because they're always they're working as well. So I have sort of like my I feel like each each person in the business ends up racking up like three three people, three hair people, three makeup people that they can kind of go. And then also different New York and L.A. Right. Yeah. Usually different. So finding your people in both cities can be challenging. but I've found really good people that I love working with and they know my skin. They're like, we know. They know my hair.

49:36They know my hair is difficult. And I bring my big bag of extensions that my colorist. I've been working also. I have to give my colorist I've

49:44Lili Reinhart:been working with since I was 19. So 10 years. His name is Matt Rez. I literally was looking at your hair color and I said, that is a Matt Rez color. Yeah. He's been on our show. Lovely. Ten years ago, I saw him and he took me from brunette to like a balayage slowly. And it was the longest someone had ever done my hair because of how like hair by hair this man is so detail oriented. And I've never seen someone who's like better at their job. and I again I'm also I'm very lucky like people who I work who I like I don't want to say work with but like I end up getting really close to them and like they become my family yeah I feel really lucky to have that and Matt feels like one of those people and he calls me his ride or die so nice I'm so lucky but we're like oh we knew each other you know he did my hair before he started transitioning my hair to blonde before Riverdale like when I was auditioning and turning Betty Blonde.

50:53Lili Reinhart:And so he did my hair all throughout Riverdale and is the reason why it's still on my head. He takes such good care of your hair. Well, we have one last question and then we have a rapid fire. So since Riverdale, you've made the leap to executive producer with your production company, Small Victory Productions. I'm curious how looking back at your own experience as an actor and a young actor, Is there a way that you're kind of hoping to like support young actors who are coming up in a way that maybe you didn't have that support in the past? I feel like, well, it's also it's hard because you don't, I feel like people don't love unsolicited advice.

51:40And I don't ever want to seem like I'm 29. I'm still very much figuring it out and learning. but for example I worked on Forbidden Fruits with Lola Tong who's was everywhere this summer because of summer I turned pretty being the biggest show ever and she's I believe I think

51:59Lili Reinhart:she just turned 23 and so she was 22 when we shot and I was 28 which is pretty different times of our lives and also very different times of our careers like she's really at the it was the final season of her show and it was the it's like the biggest show of all time and I think I really felt a very I really want like let me nurture you to her and in not a creepy way but I really felt like I wanted to take care of her not that it was my responsibility or my job or that she needed it because she certainly did not but it was more like I think I said or I wanted it to be clear to her that I was saying, whatever you need or whatever questions you have about this weird career that we're in and position you're in as a public figure, being in a hit show, being in a love triangle, like any questions, comments, concerns, if I can help, I would love to.

52:58Lili Reinhart:Yeah. So I just, I wanted to offer up advice or help or mainly friendship if she wanted it. And I'm glad that she did. I have a sister who's the same age as Lola. So it just feels natural for me to be like the big sister a little bit. Okay, Lily, we're doing a rapid fire with you. It's a witchy edition in honor of your upcoming movie. So for the things that I, the random things I'm going to mention, you're either going to say forbidden if you're not for it or fruit if you are for it. Correct. Okay. First off, swimming lessons part two. Forbidden. oh okay by the way this is in reference to your book of poetry yeah swimming lessons glazed donut oh fruit fruity big time fruit accutane

53:52that's a really tricky this is not rapid fire for me forbidden fruit it was both it was both okay yeah both can be true at the same time guys love is blind uk edition Forbidden. I like the U.S. version. Sorry. Okay. Fair.

54:10Lili Reinhart:Pole dancing to work out. Oh, fruit. It's incredibly challenging. Okay. You've done this. You have to be very athletic to be pole dancing. Okay. Dopamine decor or minimalist decor? I think dopamine. Okay. So it's fruit. So fruit. Yes. Fruit. Digital detoxing. Oh, fruit. Yeah. Yes. sleep tracking i don't think those things are accurate okay i feel like i'll sleep like shit and i'll be like you've got a hundred this is not correct yeah no i just breathe slowly a 10-step skincare routine forbidden for me i don't need all that i think less is more in my life right now yeah okay buying vintage clothing fruit always yes what are your jeans right now silver lake oh yeah i like yeah not vintage but they look really good thank you yeah i love denim yeah okay and our last one this is gonna seem random lily as the next contestant on dancing with the stars absolutely not that's forbidden it doesn't it's the most forbidden thing that could ever happen to anyone do you ever watch it no i just watch the clips on tiktok i have seen a A few of the dancers on there making TikToks.

55:32Lili Reinhart:I just I can't dance. And I don't. Yeah. That that is my worst nightmare. OK, I read that you were that you took dance lessons as a child. Yes. And I took a lot of them. And I don't know why anyone encouraged me to do so. I was so bad at it. I was so bad at it. It was it's horrible. Like they would give me like you'd get like a DVD of the full two hour dance recital. I wasn't in it for two hours, but like my one little three minute song is in there. I'm like, what the hell is going on on that stage? Why did anyone let me do this? But I was a kid, so it's fine. But no, I had to dance on Riverdale.

56:09Lili Reinhart:And I, at one point I was texting our shows, our creator Roberto and saying, please, please, I can't do, I please, like I really, sometimes I would put my foot down and be like, I'm actually not dancing in this, but because everyone else was like a great dancer somehow. Not me. Nope. Yeah. Okay. Well, thank you for playing with us. Thank you for hanging out with us. This has been amazing.
