0:07Welcome to Breaking Beauty, the podcast all about the breakthrough people, products, and moments in beauty. We're your hosts, Jill Dunn and Carlene Higgins.
0:20Hello and welcome back to Breaking Beauty podcast. I'm Carlene Higgins and I'm here with my favorite co-host, Jill Dunn. Hello, Jill. Hey, Carlene. And of course, we just saw each other in New York last week. We were girls about town. And we had so many great conversations with people. I cannot wait for everyone to hear those episodes. And of course, our longtime listeners will know that we are two beauty editors turned beauty podcasters here each and every Wednesday with the breakthrough people, products and moments in beauty. And today we're sitting down with a makeup artist who is famous for so many things, but I think his most famous client is Meghan Markle.
0:58And that is the wonderful Daniel Martin. Yes, Daniel is a celebrity makeup artist and also Tatcha's Global Director of Education and Artistry, which means he not only works on the brand's content, he also has a hand in product development, which is really cool. Of course, it's all about skin first beauty, whether we're talking about skincare or makeup. And I think that's very much of the moment right now. I think Tatcha was kind of leading the charge, having a makeup artist be in charge of skincare innovation. I feel like we're just seeing that everywhere right now. And prior to working with Tatcha, Daniel served as brand ambassador to Dior Beauty and consulted with Honest Beauty.
1:36That was the first time I ever met him was at Jessica Alba's product launch. I think it was 2014 or something. I have a picture of me and him and Jessica Alba doing a boomerang. So when were boomerangs popular? I was going to say, we need that for our blog. Everybody needs to see that as well. And I have to look it up. But I will say I can recall the filter I used on. It was embarrassing. Not filtered face to any filtered. Yes. Built in Instagram filters. You know, those were the fun days. And of course, exactly. Daniel is no stranger to magazines as well. His makeup artistry has been featured in British Vogue, Marie Claire, L.U.K., Tatler, Harper's Bazaar.
2:19And of course, he has a long roster of celebrity clientele. Everyone from Elizabeth Moss to Jessica Biel, Olivia Palermo, Michelle Yeoh, and as mentioned, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, for whom he created her wedding day makeup look back in 2018. And not sure how many of you saw Daniel in Meghan's premiere episode of her new series, With Love, Meghan, that debuted last week on Netflix. Well, they are friends as well. So he's got that VIP status and he's going to be giving us some behind the scenes scoop as well just ahead in our chat today. And I think we finally get the details on the exact makeup used on Meghan Markle's wedding day.
3:03My jaw was dropped. It literally was because I think I know everything about Meghan Markle's looks and wedding day and all that. And I was like, excuse me, roll back the tape. What did you say? Yeah. I almost didn't catch it. So that was really great. And of course, he's just known for those really fresh, beautiful makeup looks. And I would just love for him to do my makeup one day. I'm putting that in the universe right now. So with all of that being said, today's topic is all about how to look really fresh for spring. everything from the foundation that Daniel had us adding to cart for our skin types, had a nail down, a monochromatic makeup look like the one he created for Ali Wong recently on the red carpet and including the exact pairing that he recommends for this spring.
3:49Plus, we get Daniel's take on Pat McGrath's viral glass mask. He did try it and so much more. He actually brought in a bag of products for show and tell. So be sure to watch the episode on our YouTube, like, subscribe. And as usual, every product mentioned today will be listed over on our website at breakingbeautypodcast.com. Yeah. Anytime that you can shop our links, we are very grateful for you to support the show and subscribe to our newsletter because we do have our monthly faves coming out. So everybody, we've linked that in our show notes as well. Please do join the conversation. We're sharing stuff that we don't share on the podcast.
4:26Those are personal favorites for myself and Carlene. Without further ado, welcome back to Breaking Beauty Podcast, Daniel Martin.
4:37Honey Love is one of our show partners this week. It's almost spring. I could feel it in the air. So I'm digging out my special occasion dresses, my skirts for days on patios. And one thing about me is I wear a shapewear short underneath any skirts or dresses. I just think it's that confidence boost that I need when I'm walking around the city or even attending a special occasion. And that's why I was excited to discover the Honey Love Superpower Short. First of all, it's really inclusive. It goes from size extra small to 3X. And I find the difference is that it has targeted compression technology that sort of distinguishes between the areas where you do want more support and areas where you need less compression.
5:19So it sort of works with your body and its curves versus working against it. And it has flexible boning in the side seams where it goes over your tummy area. And I love that because it means it's not moving around. It's not rolling down every time I stand up. So you, again, get that confidence boost. And Honey Love isn't just about shapewear, everyone. They have unbelievably comfortable bras. The one that I got is called the Silhouette Bra. You have to check it out. It gives you the support. Like it has underwire, but there's no wire in it at all. Very, very comfortable. So treat yourself to the most comfortable shapewear on earth and save 20 % off sitewide at honeylove.com slash beauty.
5:58Use our exclusive link to get 20 % off at honeylove.com slash beauty. After you purchase, they'll ask you where you heard about them. Please support our show and tell them that we sent you. Treat yourself to Honeylove because you deserve it. We'll link to this offer in our show notes and on our website. Now back to the show. Hi, I'm Mary Alice Haney. And I'm Dr. Thais Ali Abad. Dr. A, as she is known, is a world-renowned OB-GYN. And together, we're launching a new podcast, SheMD, to empower women to become their own health advocate. We're providing women with the knowledge and tools to really own their own health.

6:58Welcome back to Breaking Beauty Podcast. Daniel Martin. It's been a minute since you were on the microphone. Yes. I think it's a couple of years, three years maybe. God, 30 years ago? Time flies. Yeah, and I didn't get to meet you. So I'm so honored and like, I feel so privileged to have you on the mic. But we did meet in 2019. We did. Okay. Back at Sephora, number one. Yes. Historical moment. In the bank. Yes, it was in the bank. And I think we need to clarify that it is Sephora. A lot of people, when we've talked about this, think we're mispronouncing Sephora. We do know what we're talking about.
7:32Yes, that's right. That's right. A lot has happened. And I mean, I think we have to start off by talking about, because you're always associated with Meghan Markle. We know that. You guys are like friends now, right? Yeah, we're very, very, very close. And of course, her show just aired last week. You were on episode one. And like, how did that come about? It was just like, I'm doing this show. Would you want to be on it? And I'm going to support my friend no matter what. Of course. And it was an incredible experience. Yeah. I actually learned so much from her in the kitchen. Yeah. And that's something that goes back years.
8:09Yeah. And I've had a lot of food first with her. Oh, interesting. Like Eleven Madison Park was with her. Oh. Daniel Balud's restaurant was with her. So I've had a lot of like fancy food first with her. Yeah. Because she knows how picky I am about food, but she's opened up my palate so much. Yeah. So my episode with her was amazing. And I just learned so much from her. So you're making candles. I didn't peg you as a DIY guy. I'm not going to lie. I could see you mixing up makeup, colors, all of that. But tell us about making candles in Meghan Markle's kitchen. I love candles. And I mean, I didn't realize that a you can make candles straight from beeswax the way that we did it.
9:01So we both learned how to make these candles together. And it's I mean, what's fun about the show in the episode is that you truly get to see her and you truly get to see the relationships and the friendships that she has with her. these people. Yeah. And it's so much fun. And I don't know if you guys have seen it yet, but no. Not yet. Okay. So waiting to binge. I'm going to binge the whole thing because I go back to like the TIG days. And that's the thing. Yes. So much about this show comes from that. Yes. And anyone who's followed her, I mean, you guys are from Toronto, so you know her from her suits days and the TIG days.
9:43So this is a big homecoming for her. And did anything happen behind this scenes when you were shooting that you can share with us that maybe people didn't see? Oh, gosh. A beauty moment or any other moment? Oh, gosh. Not necessarily a beauty moment, but I, for some reason, started to lose my voice on that trip. Oh. So we had to actually incorporate it into the episode. Oh, okay. Just because I start sounding like a kid going through puberty and my voice is going in and out. You make some honey lozenges. Yeah. So like, yeah, there's things kind of unravel as the episode happens because they have no choice.
10:27Oh, I see. What about what about what is a dish that she makes that you love? Because you said your palate, you're a little pickier. Yeah. What I love about going over to when I stay with them is that she just pulls stuff out of the kitchen and just makes it. Yeah. like with whatever she has in the fridge and I love that leftover challenge totally it makes it delicious I have a sweet tooth so when I you know she always has something sweet for me yeah she's just very very thoughtful like that that's so sweet yeah I love her and Harry together also yeah yeah it's I love that they're opening that up and we need shows like this right now I I call them my comfort watches.
11:09Yeah. My comfort creators. Oh, I love that. Because it's in this kitchen. Comfort creator. Even if I'll never meet her, even if I never make a damn thing she's making, I'll probably never make a candle. I'll tell you that right now, Daniel. Yeah. But I will watch it. There's a certain like catharsis of doing small things, small creative things like coloring and all of that. And it really helps to scale back what can feel really overwhelming and just focus on the moment. So it's kind of, yeah, comfort creator. I love that. I love that. The new Martha Stewart. Yeah. Comfort creator. Yeah. So good.
11:46Now, we also, of course, will take inspiration from what you and Megan create together in terms of a beauty look. And today's episode is all about fresh ideas for spring. so can you tell us anything that you've done with Megan lately that might be a great idea that we can kind of borrow what's the vibe I mean it's spring it's like you know everyone's coming out of their shell everyone's taking off all the winter layers you want to see that glow you want to see that vibrancy that you have so just keeping it sheer pop a lipstick to keep I always think of makeup is like that piece of jewelry that kind of like gives you that pop of light.
12:29Yeah. If you're wearing all black or if you're wearing something bright, it's just that one accent that kind of pulls everything together or go bold on the eye, but just keeping everything else minimal. Yeah. I think I, one of your questions was like, like no mascara moment. And I love that look with a bright lip. Yeah. Because it just makes everything focus in on the lip and everything else is just kind of like encompassing that. Yeah. So you're a fan of the ghost lashes. I never knew that that was a name, but I was like, oh, that kind of makes sense. But yeah, I love that. I love that because it adds a youthfulness to your look.
13:14Yeah. You do, you know, if you're on TV or if you're doing anything like that, you want a bit of definition in the eye. So you can go with like a Lancome Definisil like mascara that's going to give you length separation. That's going to make it look like your lash, but better. But yeah, it's like no eyebrows. Yeah. I love that no eyebrow look. It's not for everybody. could never be me. And there's a way to do makeup around that, that makes it look cool. But I mean, you, it's just, you have to know how to build around it. Yeah. Would you ever do anything else to enhance the lashes without actually using mascara?
13:53Like I was thinking about this and I was like, remember clear mascara? It kind of just went, you know, it went out of style, but it's like, maybe this is a moment for that or just curling your lashes. Exactly. What would you? Yeah. I I would curl them. I would use, Dior has a great lash serum that goes on, it goes on opaque and it looks white, but it dries down clear. Oh, interesting. So it gives you, it's basically just kind of beefing up what you already have. I would even, if I have the time, I would even go in and do individual lashes so close to the lash line that it looks like your own lash.
14:30Yeah. Because then you can get that fullness without like the weight of mascara. So there's ways to cheat to make it look like your own. Yeah. Without dressing it up. I like the hack that you gave me too before we jumped on the mic. I was doing my makeup in the hallway and Daniel, you were kind enough to give us some Tatcha lip balm with the gold, the gold's like threads in it. And I used it on my face. That was your hack. So glowy. Yeah. The gold breaks down when you You swirl it in the pot and it's a beautiful highlighter. What's the exact name of it? It's the Tatcha Goldspun Lip Balm. Lip balm.
15:10Yeah. And it's just like a little touch of glitter. Yeah. It just kind of gives you a nice little bright kick. Yeah. Without it actually feeling like makeup. And I think on that topic, actually, WWD just posted an article on the makeupification of skincare. Why a full face of skincare is now the full face of makeup. I actually think there's a bit, it's very nuanced, let's be honest. But it's always struck me the fact that you're a makeup artist and you're an ambassador for Tatcha. And, you know, the fact that they kind of embrace that, I thought, I always thought was very interesting from the beginning.
15:47And now they're kind of pouring into color cosmetics, right? Yeah. So I think what people don't, I don't think a lot of people know this, but like when a brand is trying to, you know, capture that loyal client, it's much easier to do that with skincare than it is for color. Because color can be very kind of, you know, frivolous in the sense that like it's so trend based. Yes, exactly. But if you have that moisturizer, that cleanser that you love, you're always going to go back to it. So when they brought me on, a lot of it too was so much of my work is based around good skin practice. And I don't like to see makeup on the skin.
16:33Right. And I think because I grew up with horrible acne and I went through a period in my 20s when I worked at MAC where I was just trying to cover up everything because I hated the way my skin looked. Yeah. That to me was like this subconscious thing in my work that I don't ever want my clients to look like they're wearing a ton of makeup. I want the makeup to just kind of pull out who they are. Yeah. So when Vicky gave me the opportunity to join the brand and create with them, I jumped on it because I also do understand the ethos of the brand, but I also understand how it complements makeup because you can't have good makeup without good skin.
17:12for sure for sure yeah i will say on that tip the tinted skin care that's what they're calling it tinted skin care i tried the glow the glow recipe blushes serum blushes yeah and they actually had skin care claims oh you have it yeah yeah actually have like the people who were in the clinical studies actually had like what's it called hyperpigmentation go away wow wearing it so It's on a different level. That's what they're talking about. This isn't like no makeup makeup. It's tinted skincare, right? Well, it's also like what the makeup, what the lipstick lesbians were talking about when we had them on the show.
17:50That was last summer? Yeah. I love them. That we regretted. And that's exactly what she said. We're going to start seeing skincare claims on makeup the way we see it with skincare. Right. So that's cool. It's all the crystal ball is coming to fruition. Are you excited that, I'm curious that Tatcha's like started like I'm wearing the lip gloss right now that you gave me. Are you excited about that? I'm yeah, I'm I'm excited. I'm I have to admit, though, I'm a snob when it comes to makeup and product development. So I, you know, it goes a lot of things that we that we're creating or that we've created goes through a lot of testing with me and my clients because I want to make sure that there's payoff.
18:36I want to make sure that the claims are true to what they are and that, you know, it's if it can pass a makeup artist's judgment, then we're good. Definitely. I think there's a lot of brands out there that don't do that test and payoff falls short. And, you know. Then they're in trouble. Then they're in trouble. Yeah. I mean, the dewy skin cream, we've already sung its praises many times, but it is so good, especially this time of year under makeup. It's just the best. 100%. What's this? So this is Orsay Foundation. What? Okay. Never seen it before. You've never seen this? No. Oh, my gosh. It's what I use for.
19:13It's my new Holy Grail for TV and red carpet. I will have to be stealing this from you. What do you like about it? Tell us everything. What I love about this formula is that it looks like skin on TV. The pigments are beautiful. It works really well with the skincare that I use underneath it. Yep. And it's just, it's so comfortable. It's called Orsay Come Closer Serum Foundation. Oh, serum foundation. That's why it feels. So it's very like a light fluid when you apply it. I just put it on my hand. Wow. So I don't know this brand. She's based out of California. Okay. I think her only distribution.
19:53Yeah, this is nice, everyone. She's at Neiman Marcus. Okay. But the shade range is incredible. I love it so much. Okay. Well, it's very, it's beautiful looking. Yeah. Beautiful looking. Like the actual package. No, I'm excited to try it. Have you played with, so this is my favorite. I love these stick foundations, but this contour is incredible by Dior. Yeah. I tried the stick foundation last year. Loved it. And then a couple of people have asked me about the contour, but I hadn't tried it yet. Yeah. This one is really possible. Can we swatch these? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So pretty. Yeah. Beautiful.
20:33It just kind of like melts on the skin. It's great for guys. So nice. For like, you know, no brainer to sweat all over your face. Dior has been killing it with makeup. They have. It's Peter. Peter's a genius. I have to say in the last five years, they've definitely stepped it up. Yeah. Big time. I've loved everything I've tried. Yeah. Yeah. I love that brand still. Oh. Oh, yes. We've talked about this one. Oh, you have? Yeah. Katie Jane Hughes. I love Katie. Yeah. This is the cheek and lip. Yeah. Yeah, I have this at home. I just love how blurry it looks. Yeah, it's a nice texture. She didn't go with like, I was actually kind of surprised she didn't go with like the high gloss kind of glow.
21:16It's like a little bit more. Yeah, more opaque. Yeah. No, I love that because you can always add that on top. Yeah, it's different. It's great. I don't know if you've played with this yet, but this underneath concealer is incredible. Okay, so this is a new, what is it? Tatcha the Brightening Eye Cream. I used it this morning. I won't touch this. Yeah, I don't want to mouth it up. You actually use it under concealer. Yeah, I love it under concealer because it dries down and it's hydrating without it being kind of slippery. Yeah. Because you want that skin, especially if you have, you know, like a crepe-ier skin, you want it to be taut.
21:55And this does it. And then I can use a stick. I can use the thickest shears concealer on top of it. Wow. So you've blown my mind now because I have now trained myself to only use eye cream at night because it would cause all of my eye makeup to transfer whenever I would use an eye cream during the day. So I cut it out completely. So it's kind of blowing my mind that you're actually recommending this for daytime use. When you do your makeup during the day, how do you do your makeup? Oh, gosh. In a hallway. In what way? Yeah, in the hallway. I dump stuff on my hand. But is it like skincare and then you go into complexion or do you do your eyes?
22:35No, I don't do eyes first. I do complexion first and then I do my eyes last. Okay. So by the time that you get to your eyes, the dry down of your eye cream should be safe to put on top.
22:56Today's episode is brought to you in part by Nuuly. So you guys know I'm a beauty junkie. You also know that I'm a clothes horse and I love kind of cycling through my wardrobe. I, you know, I get tired of things, but I also don't like to waste. I'm not rich and also it's not sustainable. So everybody needs to know about Nuuly. I tried it for the first time for a bunch of recordings in New York. I had so much fun. So what is it? Nuuly is a subscription clothing rental service for just$98 a month. 23:34And it's all laundered in their state-of-the-art laundering facilities. And they have great brands like a Goldie. I'm really into Hill House, which I've talked about before. And a lot of the types of really pretty dresses you'd see at Anthropologie. It's got fast free shipping and returns. And there's an option to buy what you love at a discount if you're really into it. So I got a great like suede at kind of vegan suede trench coat. I got a great knit leopard dress that looks so good on camera, a striped like suit. So there were pants at a top. And that's the kind of thing that like once you're photographed in it, it's done.
24:15So I just it was the perfect thing to get on loan without having to invest in it. I mean, it's just great all around. Everybody needs to try it. 27:00Okay. So we've talked about, you know, skin tints are happening. We know that. What do you do about concealer when you want to, like, we know that's happening for spring. So what do you do to make sure that the concealer is seamless? If you're skipping foundation or you're using something that's extremely sheer, tell us your like methods. Yeah. So much of it is application. So start lighter and build up. And those applications of like, I don't know what if it was like TikTok or whatever. It was like a little bit here, a little bit here or a lot here that came all the way down here and the triangle.
27:39The whole triangle. Yeah. You spend more time blending that out and diffusing it than truly covering up what it is you're trying to cover up. Right. Yeah, that's one of the things I definitely have noticed when we've interviewed so many makeup artists now and they're always, it's like really the focus is to make it look seamless. So what I've noticed a lot of and I've tried to start getting in the habit of doing is like applying it always to my hand first and then before it touches my face versus again, TikTok method, which is like, yeah, dump. And it's like that actually, from what I'm understanding, is like makeup artists almost never do that.
28:22It's always hand first. It's always blending first. It can feel like you're wasting makeup, but it's like that if you want it seamless. And you're warming it up on your hand. Right. So that breaks down the pigments and the emulsions and makes the application just easier. Like I tend to buff out concealer rather than swipe it. because if you're using a thicker concealer, that pigment's going to drag. Yeah. And if the skin is, if you don't have enough emulsion or enough hydration underneath, it just kind of sits and then it starts to crackle. So you then use, you know. More. More or. Fill in the cracks.
29:05Yeah. Or like I never apply my makeup with a sponge. I always apply it with a brush and then I use a damp sponge to blend it out. What's your favorite foundation brush? No Makeup Makeup. Victoria Jackson has this incredible foundation brush that I love for foundation. Oh, interesting. It's the density of the hair and the ferrule of the brush is so compact that I just need a little bit of foundation and it just blends seamlessly. I love that, the actual foundation though. Oh, you did it? Did you? Did I do something wrong? I actually really like it. You do? Yeah. It's a powder? No. No, it's a cream.
29:49But it's in a compact? It's in a compact. Yeah, it's in a compact. So what I tend to do is I actually like using it as a finisher. Okay. But it's an easy, no-brainer kind of application. A lot of it, too, is your skincare underneath it. Maybe I was on the dry side because I applied it and I was like, I'm not getting the no-makeup makeup. Yeah, because then it was kind of sitting. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. I used it on a friend of mine. He's a guy. And it's great for guys because it gives you enough coverage, but it doesn't feel like anything. So it's that one product. Like if you're going to the grocery store, if you're going out and you just want to balance out your skin, this is perfect.
30:33Okay. Victoria Jackson, we're coming back to you. She's like famous for something. No makeup, makeup. No, but she's famous for like a skincare. Is she not? She's like a QVC queen from back in the day. Yeah. It was like her and Bobby back in the 80s. Yes. She was the first makeup artist that was direct to consumer for those infomercials. Yeah. Yeah. And she claims that she coined No Makeup Makeup. I mean, she trademarked that back then. And then she let it go, the trademark? Well, no. She sat on the trademark. She went into medical because of her daughter. Okay. And then she just came back into makeup.
31:11Yeah. Her story is so incredible. She's so inspiring. I met her through Megan and she's just so, such an incredible woman. Okay. All right. Well, we're going to link to that on our website, everyone. You can try it for yourself. What else is popping for spring? I haven't been paying attention to eyes for a long time because like who's, who can be bothered with palettes? And Huda Kattan was talking on TikTok. She was doing predictions for 2025 and she said she was really feeling mono matte on eyes. And it reminded me of the look you did for Ali Wong at the Golden Globes. And I wondered what if you agree with that or what you think is fresh for eyes right now.
31:52I mean, for Ali, because she's also wearing her glasses, it's how do you make her eye come through even though she has her glasses on? Absolutely. That's me when I'm not wearing contacts. So for me with her, I just created a monochromatic kind of ombre effect to her eye. Because a lot of times when you're working with Asian eyes, you have to really understand their eye structure to create that dimension properly. Yeah. So for me, creating that gradation darker at the lash line and bringing that up, I just used it with more monochromatic shades than I did with shimmer. I mean, are you using palettes these days?
32:36Are you using monos? Like, what are you feeling? What do you like? That eyeshadow palette was actually, I think it was Mario, makeup by Mario. Oh, yeah. Because I love his mattes. Me too. Obsessed. Yeah. And then he came out with a newer palette. It's a cool new one. Okay. I think it might have been the cool matte tone, like the cool tone. Yeah. But yeah, I love his eyeshadows. Yeah. That was probably the last palette that I used, actually. And I feel like you just need a good matte palette because like you can get so many shimmers in a cream form or, you know, using a blush that has a bit of radiance to it to give you that dimension.
33:15But like. Yeah, sticking some highlighter on top. Exactly. I do want to ask you because I really dig monochromatic looks. I think it's a very easy look to pull together and you get harmony. Could we get specific about some of your favorite combos? if you're doing I don't know if you have that off the top of your head but like let's say you're doing like a like a tawny like a peach like a warm version or like kind of brownie version like what what combo do you like on eyes and then cheeks or cheeks and lips like do you have any where you're like oh these together are like oh I love that you know what I mean yeah there's katie jane has a maybe it's this color i'll use is it so these are the katie jane hughes blur sticks yeah what they're called yeah yeah actually i have one that's just been it's destroyed so i got a newer one yeah but i love using this as a base and then using one of mario's shadows on top of it okay on the eyes on the eyes and even on the cheek what shade is that this one is it's berry but it's kind of like a brown soft raisin.
34:27Soft raisin. Okay. Yes. It's called the soft smudge lip and cheek, by the way. Depending on the skin tone, it can look like a warm brown. Yeah, pretty sure. So it does on me. Yeah. So I love using this as a base and then throwing a shadow on top of it because the warmth from this color is an undertone. Oh, interesting. So if I'm using like a cooler brown on top or a cooler, like eggplant on top of this, it takes the takes the depth off a bit yeah okay so I can take this color and go like all up in the contour of the eye because it gives me that depth but without that hard payoff right right and then I can just concentrate something deeper in the lash line yeah so I love using cream colors first oh interesting because I can really kind of shape it out and cheer it out and then throw on the mat on top of it.
35:27Okay. I'm going to try that. And then would you use this shade on the cheek as well? Yeah. To get that on a chromatic harmony? Okay. Amazing. And that's the thing. It's like, I have like a palette or a stash of cream colors that I use as bases. Right. And then the shadows on top of it locks down the color, but it also adds the depth or, you know, just a bit more pigment. Okay. Okay. I love that. Okay. I love that. That was a good brownie one. I need another one. Tala 28 has great. Their bronzers are really good. There's a lot of payoff. Yeah. And the tonalities are really nice too because they're pretty opaque.
36:08Yeah. Okay. So that's another good base. All right. I love that. What has come across your desk? Because you get more makeup than us. Well, for sure. I would hope so. As ever, as you should. What has impressed you? For spring. Oh, God. We were just talking about how many spring launches there are. That's true. On the way here. It's more than we can cover for our best of spring episode. Oh. Help us with our best of spring episode here. What are a couple new launches that you're like, this is legit? I'm just wondering what makes the grade for Daniel Martin's kit, you know? A lot of it is payoff and ease.
36:41Okay. Like, I love NYX Cosmetics. I love a drugstore. Yes. I think I got sent a L 'Oreal Paris package recently and it was stick highlighters. I saw those. And I love them. The Lumi. The Lumi. They're meant to be a Chanel dupe for the Chanel Universal Balm. But I don't. Do you think that they. I haven't gotten. It's. I think it's different than the Chanel one. I do too. Well, they have two different. They have a glass one. The Lumi. They have one glass finish and one, I don't know what the name of the other finish is. Oh, I didn't get the, maybe I haven't tried the glass finish. And they're meant to, at least one of them is meant to be a dupe of the Chanel Universal Bond.
37:27Oh, I love that one. I know. And I was like, I don't know. It might be in my makeup bag, but Milk has kind of a lookalike one of the Chanel one that to me, I think looks closer. I mean it's it's interesting that all these brands has their version of that I mean Tatcha has the serum stick and we've had that one forever when I was working with Jessica about Honest Beauty we had the Honest Balm so it's interesting that now these products are kind of coming out when they've historically been around for a while I'm on Tatcha we need some tinted serum balms this is from Sicily. I'm obsessed with this red.
38:11So this is the Sicily. I don't know if I can read the fine print. Fido Rouge something. It's a lipstick and it's number 43. What do you like about it? Rouge Ardent. Ardent. I love how, yeah, it's just pretty. Sicily does make up very well. Yeah, their color is so beautiful. It's probably$100, but it's beautiful. She's pricey, but she's so worth it. Yeah, we love a NYX, but we love Cicely. This reminds me of the Hourglass blush that I put on. Oh, yeah. Speaking of a monochromatic look. I love this blush so much. I will, yeah, I'll have to link to it. That would be beautiful on you. Yeah, it's nice.
38:51It's nice. Yeah, it's a beautiful matte. It is. And it just glides on so seamlessly. Beautiful. I'm saving these for Elizabeth Moss. Okay. Oh, I'm sorry. I just swiped it. No, no, no, not at all. No, no, no. But you use your brushes. It's all. No, it's all good. but like it's such a beautiful payoff and it's just so saturated. Yeah. Lovely. And it looks like true velvet. It would look good with that ghost lashes idea. And a dewy skin. Yeah. Yeah. I could see it on Elizabeth. I really could. What about RMS? Because I know you used RMS on Megan on her wedding day. Do you still think that that product...
39:27Oh, you didn't? No. Okay. I'm going to scratch that. That was what was in the news, everyone. Oh my God. There's so much speculation about that. Oh yeah. Okay. Can you reveal anything that was? Oh, yeah. It's been six years now. Yeah. What was it? I mean, it was basically a lot of Tatcha. And I mean, I was with Dior then. Okay. So a lot of the backstage had just launched. Oh. Right. So her whole face was pretty much Dior backstage. Okay. This is the first time I've ever said this. At last, we have the reveal. My jaw's on the floor. I've written about that. I've perpetuated that myth. Oh, my gosh.
40:00That she wore RMS. Oh, yeah. Like I think it was like RMS on cover up. Like that was the word. No. Sorry sis. Now we know. Oh my God. Do you know what lip? Do you remember what lip color it was? It was the lip glow. It was? And a pencil. Oh. Her lip combo was the lip glow and a what color pencil? Do you remember? Or do you know the name? Oh God. It was a MAC lip liner. Wow. Because I'm a die hard MAC lip liner. Yeah. Devotee. Okay. Have you tried Cool Spice yet? The new lip liner from MAC. Oh, I saw that they have like a whole neutrals. Yeah, I've tried it. And it's very much, much more like the original spice than their current spice liner.
40:46Oh, I need to get this. Me too. Yeah. Jill. Yeah. You've been hiding this. Well, I actually, I watched my TikTok. I still buy a lot of MAC. The 90s Stan, the Paradise Garagers would like the original spice lip liner. The combo I did for that was MAC nude lipstick in Cool Teddy and Cool Spice liner. And it was good. So it's out now? It just came out. So it was that campaign with Julia Fox and Megan and Martha Stewart. Oh, yes, yes, yes. They just did something. Yeah. Oh, okay. Very cool. Ooh, I need to get into that. So those are good for spring if you guys want to check it out. Yeah. I use a lot of MAC.
41:22I love MAC. Yeah. To this day, you do. Yeah. They never fail.
41:35This episode is brought to you in part by OneSkin. I want to tell you what I love about the brand OneSkin. It's one of these scientific skincare lines that has so much data behind it, but it's actually for female scientists who created it. I love that kind of woman power in 2025. I'm so here for it. And the whole kind of raison d 'etre behind One Skin is about this OS1 peptide. It's scientifically proven to reach the deeper layers of the skin, improving things like wrinkles, hydration, and barrier function at the cellular level. We actually interviewed one of the founders, Carolina Race Oliveira is her name.
42:17And one One thing that I learned from her is they went through many, many peptides to find the one that's in one skin to make sure that it would function the way that it does. And so they were able to study it at a molecular level to see that the cells in your skin are actually reversing and aging by I think it was two and a half years with regular use. I find that so impressive. I've been using it for at least a month myself, and I've been really enjoying just how elegant they've managed to get the texture. It's very lightweight, very milky. They have a great mineral SPF as well that goes on so lovely under makeup.
42:58It's almost indistinguishable from the one without SPF and its mineral, which is fantastic. If you're looking to find the right peptide, because I know there are a lot out there, I really do think that OneSkin has a step above just the industry standard. So if you want to try it for yourself, you can try OneSkin's OS1 powered topical supplements for yourself with 15 % off your purchase using code beauty at oneskin.co slash beauty. That's oneskin, O-N-E-S-K-I-N dot co slash beauty and use code beauty for 15 % off your first order.
43:46Do you have a favorite skin tint or do you believe in skin tints? I do believe in skin tints, but I think, again, it's like the idea, like skin tint, you think sheer. Totally. You think light. Yeah. But then you see some of these skin tints and it's just like a foundation. Yes. Yeah, it really varies. Well, this is why I like the It Cosmetics one because there's quite a bit of coverage for CC cream, which... I know, but it's right. That used to be our tint back in the day, our tinted moisturizer. And it has more coverage than that. So that's why I like that one so much. Do you apply it with your hands or fingers or brush?
44:27Yeah, just with my hands. And that's, to me, how you'd want to use a tint. Yeah. Like for me, a tint should actually probably be a part of your skincare ritual. Yeah. Yeah. It's that finishing element. Yeah. And kind of this conversation coming full circle, typology and full disclosure, we did work with them on social. They sent me their tinted serum. I love that brand. And I have been actually wearing it a lot this winter because it gives you the coverage of the redness like gone. and then yeah but it's a serum and then you can have the Beauty of Jocean is that how you say it? I don't know how you say that Beauty of Jocean Jocean yeah Beauty of Jocean the K-Beauty one and they just launched a skin tint and it's so sheer it's like that's truly back to the makeupification of skin care yeah there it is yeah it runs such a range right?
45:21absolutely absolutely interesting Milk Makeup is just launching a grip tint for oily types. Oh. Haven't tried it, but as to your point, when we're talking about the makeupification of skincare, well, what is your skin type? We can't assume that everyone has the same skin type. Right. Right? Which is kind of how it's been up until now, where it's like, oh, well, then everybody wants a glow. Well, some people have oily skin. Right. That glow is going to come naturally. Yeah. Two hours later. it's evolving that way. I need to know before we let you go, what's your favorite go-to lip combo is? What are you using on your clients a lot?
46:04Lip combo. Oh, that's such a great question. We're getting specific today, y 'all. I mean, I've been loving a lip liner and lip balm just because I feel like it's contemporary. It's easy. And lip liners tend to stay longer than lipsticks. Yeah. Very practical. Very, very practical. Yeah. Do you have a favorite lip liner? My favorite lip liner is, it's a MAC lip liner. It's either a cork or stripped down. I feel like those two. I also love the Makeup Forever pencils. So good. I have one in my bag over there. Yeah. Those are great. Victoria Beckham does a really nice lip liner too. I tend to gravitate.
46:48My all-time favorite red lip liner is Cherry by MAC. Yeah. I'll use that on everybody and then swap out the lipsticks. But MAC Cherry is my jam. Lip product. I mean, I created the lip tint for Tatcha. Plum Blossom is a great one. I gave you guys those. I think I'm wearing it right now. I really like it. I'm wearing it with the road lip liner. Yeah, it's beautiful because it just kind of manipulates. I have one more question before we let you go. I think, and you can correct me if I'm wrong, that you did Meghan Markle's look for the Invictus Games in December? Or am I wrong? I wasn't with her. Okay, it was on your Instagram.
47:27Maybe not the Invictus Games. Or maybe it was something else. But she was like super glowy. And it was all, whatever you used or somebody used, was all over her shoulders and decolletate as well. That was recently. Yeah. Oh, she went to, her friend Tyler Perry was being honored. Okay. It was the Paley Center Honors. Oh, thank you. Do you see that? How the groomer all over? It's just like her clavicle looks like it is worth a million bucks. So what is that? So that was the live tinted Hugelot. Oh, okay. Because I think that looked very fresh. Speaking of fresh ideas for spring, because I think a lot of people will sometimes, you know, it's self-tanner, it's bronzer or nothing.
48:10Yeah. It was literally just that head to toe. Yeah. So what is that product? Is it like a gleam? It's a serum and it's in a bottle, a squeeze bottle. And a lot of times too, when people use a product like that, they just focus on the face. They don't really focus it. But I wanted it to be a part of, I just wanted it to be a part of her face and just how she looked. but my my makeup inspo was actually the pat mcgrath glass oh yeah yeah the bed what she did at couture yeah for margela yeah margela yes i think that was the most that was like a breakthrough like that was what it was supposed to be yes a breakthrough beauty moment runway backstage like old school, like how we all fell in love with fashion and makeup.
49:07Yes. That was such a f***ing moment that I was like, how do I do this? How do I get that same effect? But using what we had, because at the time her product wasn't out yet. Right. Right. I was just about to ask you if you've tried the product. Yeah. And? You can't move your mouth. You can't speak. See, talking about best of spring, this is the real tea. This is so like the box though, right? Like what you would wear back in the day in like that club where it's like you can't move your mouth. That's not a problem. It's the look. You don't need to talk. It's called the skin fetish peel off glass.
49:44Skin fetish glass artistry mask. And it's like she's a genius. Yeah. Ultimate runway secret now accessible to you. It's such a cool. It almost looks AI. Yeah. You know. Or you can runway to real life with the live tinted serum. Which serum? It's called Huglo. Huglo. The shade that I used on her was like a gold. There's three different colors. But yeah, that was runway to reality. Yeah, exactly. Pulling out all my editor tricks from back in the day. Totally. Thank you so much. Thank you so much for sharing all of your tips and tricks.
