0:00The following podcast is a Dear Media Production.

0:07Welcome to Breaking Beauty, the podcast all about the breakthrough people, products, and moments in beauty. We're your hosts, Jill Dunn and Carlene Higgins.

0:20Welcome back to Breaking Beauty podcast, everyone. I'm Jill Dunn. I'm here with Carlene Higgins. Hi. Hi, Jill. How are you? I'm good. How are you? Good. We are here in the Dear Media Studio in LA, and we are going to be recording our hashtag damn good episode. One of the first that we've done in studio, I believe. Yeah, that's right. That's why I was a little lost. That's why you heard me laughing because I was like, wait, where's my camera? I'm so excited that we're doing a damn good in studio because we always say these are our top performing episodes and yet we record them in our basement. So they're now being given like the love and the worthiness that they deserve.

0:58and the lighting. They, you know, they deserve it. So we're going to put this on YouTube as well. And we're going to try and hold up the products and y 'all can see what we're talking about. This is what people have been asking for. And I love that we've been getting some feedback when we did post like our drugstore episode on YouTube, even though it was shot in my basement. People said they like listening to it on the way to work and then they came back and they watched the YouTube. So we're getting like some double whammy. And I do that with some podcasts I listen to as well. Like sometimes listening, you don't pick up everything necessarily, but you might want to watch.

1:27And so I really enjoy that. But if it's your first time here, welcome. We are Jill and Carlene, two longtime beauty editors turned beauty podcasters. This is episode almost 400. We have 400 episodes in over eight years. And, you know, coming from our magazine editorial days, these I think are really where our editorial muscles and our editorial flex really shine in these types of episodes. Yes, that's right. So we're kind of like testing everything on the market to figure out what our favorites are. We try really hard not to talk to you about anything that's like mediocre. It's things that as editors we know are special.

2:04They stand out from the other products and their competitors. And I think Jill and I were just so proud today of our topic because we're talking all about Canadian beauty products. Yes. And we've been getting requests and our DMs for this, obviously, with everything that's going on in the world and the tariffs. It's just the time. It's definitely time and we are delivering. Yeah. And I just want to say the show is not political. It will never be political. And you can just enjoy today. We're not going to be talking about any any of that stuff that's in the news. This is just simply to celebrate our homegrown hits and we can support these from anywhere in the world.

2:44Absolutely. I think this episode is just serving everybody, no matter what kind of border you're on. It's just really good to know, like, what is amazing in Canada? And the fact is that we have hit it out of the park with some heavy duty players in the Canadian beauty scene. Obviously, MAC Cosmetics, Deciem, which makes The Ordinary, Illya. Bite Beauty. RMS Beauty. and like so many that we're going to be talking about today. And I think what kind of unites Canadian brands, they always have a lot of heart because you have to work so much f***ing harder to get it out there. And they often have the best stories, like some of the best guests we've ever had have been Canadian founders because their why is so significant.

3:31It's too hard to do it if you don't have a great story and you don't have heart and you don't have a passion for it. Yeah, exactly. And I mean, we're Canadian beauty founders in many ways ourselves. If you were buying Canadian intentionally and you're based in Canada, you want to check out the Shop Canadian Indie Beauty Collective. Okay. I know we talked about another website in our last episode that was created by a brand called Omi. This one was created by kind of a collective, an indie collective, and they got together when the tariffs were announced because of course that had a lot of Canadian beauty brands scrambling and Business of Fashion wrote about this.

4:12I think within 48 hours, this WhatsApp group of Canadian beauty founders like banded together, spent some money, got this indie beauty collective directory going. There's so many brands on there. Some of them I didn't even hear of. It's called shopcanadianbeauty.ca. Okay, great. So we're going to link to that in our show notes as well. Lots of brands I have not even seen myself. So I'm learning as well. Yeah. And all of that being said, we're going to get into our personal favorite Canadian beauty products after the jump.

6:46This is Gracie Norton from the Wellness Herway podcast, the ultimate sanctuary for a welcoming approach to wellness. It seems like every day there's a new food we're not supposed to eat, a new cleanse to take part in, or a new workout that claims to give us a flat stomach within a week. Rather than hopping on trends, we're going back to the roots of wellness and making a home of our body, mind, and soul. If you're seeking physical growth, emotional abundance, or simply a more fulfilling life. Tune in to the Wellness Herway podcast on November 6th. Get ready to embrace your body through all its forms and get back to the roots of wellness.

7:30So, Carleen, we have to kick this off by talking about your hotly anticipated skincare brand that you were creating for women over 40. I've seen some of the behind the scenes, But tell us what's next, what's new, what's the latest? Yeah, so we are in the final iteration. So I think as a lot of listeners know, like you go through a lot of different formulas before you get to the final one. I feel like we are so close now, so close. And it's so important to me that the product is, as we say, hashtag damn good. So that's taken longer than anticipated, but it is in the works and it will be worth the wait.

8:07And then there is, as we talked about just a few minutes ago, there is wading through just like the whole new world order is like, you know, where exactly is this going to be manufactured? And I know, again, like a lot of Canadian brands have like set up warehouses in the U.S. They shipped a lot of products over there before the tariffs were going to come into place because otherwise it would drive up the cost for everybody. Sure. So all of these questions, I think I do have a bit of an advantage that I haven't invested in anything yet. So it's wading through all of that. But yeah. What can you reveal about the first product or the name or any hints?

8:46Oh my goodness. I would say that's yet to come. I'm not quite ready yet, but I'm very close to revealing all of that. But it is a skincare product. It will be one hero product to start. I'm trying to fill a niche so it will be something that's suitable for mature skin and also safe for sensitive skin types, which is what I have. Yeah, I love that. And I think everybody to get updates, they can follow you where? They can follow me at Carleen Higgins on Instagram for now. And also I have a sub stack called The Eleven's where I will start kind of slowly teasing out the first messages about the brand on The Eleven's.

9:28Okay, well, we better be getting the exclusive. That's what I'm saying. Absolutely, girl. You know, more to come. You got this. More to come. All right. So aside from what you're working on yourself, what are you passionate about? We just talked about this with the Indie Beauty Collective. Sahajan is just crushing it when it comes to Canadian skincare. And the founder is Lisa Matam. And what I love about this line is that it's Ayurveda. I'm probably saying that wrong. I'm going to own that. I'm going to cop to that right now. But it's all clinically tested. So I love this merging of two worlds where it's like very natural using ingredients that have been used for like thousands of years, but it's clinically backed as well.

10:13So the products really do work and they feel like a delight on your skin. And everybody needs to try the Nourish Cream Reiche. This is it here. It's 55 US dollars, 74 Canadian. And it is just like, it's got this beautiful kind of earth toned color to it. And I just find, even though it looks really thick, like feel it, Jill. It's just like, I don't know how to explain it. It's like this lovely like body butter, but for your face. And I think that's one thing I will say that Canadian skincare brands do really well is they know barrier protection because in Canada versus in the U.S., we have nowhere to hide from the cold.

10:59You know what I mean? It's like it's not as diverse in terms of climate as it is in the U.S. So you think about Skin Fix, which I know you're going to talk about, Jill, very soon, who, you know, basically owns this category. We really know how to nourish and moisturize our skin. And I would say if there's one thing Canadian Beauty does really well, it's that. So this just feels like this lovely like cocoon on your skin. The fragrances are completely natural. Of course, it's cruelty free and it's just a delight. And the Radiance Face Serum as well, 64 US, 86 in Canada. It's a vitamin C packed serum, but it's like very gentle as well.

11:36Because like I said, it's like everything has to be able to withstand our broken skin barriers. So love both of these products. I also really appreciate that the Golden Glow Eye Bomb. I think that's one of their best sellers. And it's really brightening and it has ghee in there, which, of course, is a very traditional ingredient for, you know, South Asian culture. So I think that that's and has like rose oil. It feels very elegant, very elevated. This whole brand does. Yeah, exactly. Go Lisa. Yeah, go Lisa. And I should mention in the rich cream, some of the ingredients, there's got to cola. I hope I'm saying that right.

12:11And this helps to minimize the fine lines. And there's also trivala. And that's that potent vitamin C source. So again, it's like it's got those clinical ingredients, but it's coming from like very traditional sources. Okay. Yeah. How about you, Jill? Okay. Well, I want to shout out an SPF from Canada that is an SPF brand that is crushing it. It's just so low key and not enough people know about it. And the brand umbrella brand is called The Sunscreen Company. And they have multiple subsidiary brands or sub brands under that umbrella. Number one being Ava Issa. Now, the founder, Sarah Dudley, she's from Ottawa and she has been creating SPF specifically for 17 years.

12:56Wow. So she is the authority. She is someone who is just like one with Health Canada and knowing their claims. And her expertise has been tapped by other brands to create white label products. Venus Williams for her brand. It's actually called Eleven. Yeah. When I think about it. Yeah. It's called Eleven and she created her SPF for her. So I think she's tapped low key behind the scenes more than we know. Yeah. Yeah. I actually have often thought we should have her on the show. Yes, we should. Because A, she really knows her stuff. But B, you got everybody's got to follow her on Instagram because she has some hot takes.

13:36Yeah, she doesn't hold back. And I think that that's also the beauty of it is like zero f***s are given because she is small but mighty. And she knows she's right about a lot of she knows her stuff so well that she can go toe to toe with any influencer or people who are saying you can ingest your SPF, whatever. So I want to shout out the Ava Issa every morning SPF 30 broad spectrum. She says this is the Canadian alternative to L2MD. Oh, interesting. What I like about this is it's 100 % mineral. That's important for some people who can't tolerate chemical filters. Yeah. I have rosacea, so that would be me.

14:11Yes. But the difference maker here, that's what's kind of mind-blowing, is it's 25 % zinc oxide. So a lot of brands that claim to be 100 % mineral, there's many out there, but like a Supergoop, for instance, they only have 13 % zinc oxide. Well, that's a lot easier to do than 25%. And make it sheer. She has a Black woman in the campaign for this product. So that's how much she's banking on it being sheer. Well, and again, they developed Eleven. They actually had the product under their own company name, which I think I had talked about. The Sun E Serum. Before Eleven launched. And I was like, wait a minute, I know what this is.

14:47And sure enough, they were the makers. So the parent company is called the Sunscreen Company. And from my understanding, they don't do private label anymore. Yeah, I think they've moved on. So this is great. You do have to work it in, of course, but it goes on invisible. There's no fragrance and it's just a sleeper hit. People need to give it a go. It is sold at the detox market and it's 100 % transparent on all skin tones. And then I also wanted to shout out a product that she told me exclusively about. exclusively about. So it's coming out soft launched very shortly after this episode comes out, but it's a new self-tanning body product that does not use any of the traditional ingredients and traditional active ingredients in self-tanner.

15:33It's not DHA or ethrolose or skin staining. It's a combination of beta carotene and plant botanicals to encourage a warmer skin undertone. And it's also just a very good body moisturizer in terms of skin nourishment. So she discovered this ingredient called Tarula oil. And she said it's supplied by a biotech company that has funding from Bill Gates. I believe they were MIT students. Oh, wow. So she is on the forefront, like I said, of formulation. So it's not a surprise to me that she's innovating in this way. And I think and the what I've seen so far, I just saw a picture. It's a body butter in like a tub and then you're putting it on in the before and afters of the shape of how it sort of develops on the skin.

16:21Very beautiful. OK, well, we have to try this. We're going to have, of course, a summer damn goods coming up. So if it makes the grade, it'll be in that episode. It's called the Sunphoria. if you all of course we will link to everything but it's going to be called sunforia tarula gold and it's a truly new concept of a product never seen anything like it in terms of producing a visible beautiful but natural looking result she's calling it bio tanning yes interesting just to clarify that she said tarula oil supply from biotech company funding from bill gates is rich in beta carotene and toralene it's t-o-r-u-l-e-n-e which is a cartinoid that's You need to yeast and then an ergo igorostals, which is a pro vitamin D.

17:06Love it. Okay. On that note, I have a very tanned looking face going on at the moment. I did get a self tan and we will be having a self tanner professional on the mic in a future episode. So that's part of it. But the other part of it is Salty Faces Liquid Bronzer, which is$36 US and 42 Canadian. I love this product so much. I talked about it in the Best of Spring episode. It is just one tone. I am holding it here. And what I really like about this product is that if you are a pale person like myself and you have pink undertones, so many bronzers out there have an orangey undertone. And I'm sure it's great for certain people.

17:56Maybe if you have an olive skin tone or something like that. But for us pale girlies, it does not work. Like it just does not jive. So I love that this one kind of universal color that they came out with does have, it seems to be quite neutral. Like it has that more of like a brown undertone to it. And so a little bit cooler. It's a bit cooler. It reminds me of the Say Glowy Super Gel in Sun Glow that I'm obsessed with and I use that to contour. So I very much use this product in the same way. And it's also a matte finish, which I really like, but it gives you a dewy glow just because it's super moisturizing.

18:39It's got these like botanical hyaluronic acid and botanical extract. So it's just like feels so nice on your skin and blends in so well. So I'm a big fan of it. I'm so sorry. Just can you clarify, is it a self-tanner or it's just bronzer? It's just bronzer. Okay. So you're right in the sense that Salty Face does create self-tanners. That's kind of like their bread and butter. This is their tanning water that comes in a dropper and they have a brush to apply it. And I'm sure this is really lovely as well. And yes, it's sold on on the goop site. But yeah, so the self tanners are great, too. But I just can't get enough of that liquid bronzer.

19:19Like I love it. I know there's there's so many bronzing drops that have launched in the world. The vast majority of them are too peachy orangey for my skin tone. So I stand those two I talked about. And the salty face is Canadian. So highly recommend. You know, really quickly, I want to shout out, you know who else has an excellent self-tanner brand in their Canadian? Nuda. Excellent. I wouldn't be surprised. I was going to say Nuda is another great Canadian self-tanner brand. N-U-D-A. And I got a self-tan last night and she was actually telling me that there are so many professional self-tanners in Toronto.

19:59Yes. Because the movie making business is happening in Canada. So they are like kind of booming there. Yeah. And Nuda, I gave a couple of Nuda products to my Irish friend, Ginger, and she self-tans constantly. And she said it's like the best she ever used. I know. It's amazing. So they're out of Montreal. Check them out as well if that's your vibe. Absolutely. And their branding is great, too. Like both Nuda and Salty Face look like kind of like Byredo vibes or something. You know what I mean? Yeah. Really good.

20:39Strivectin is one of our show partners this week. I've long been a fan of Strivectin. I remember even years ago as a baby beauty editor writing about their celebrated number one bestselling neck cream. It's still a bestseller to this day. And the latest innovation from Strivectin, you're going to want to hear about this because Strivectin's new peptide plump collagen cushion cream is their next generation peptide formula. And it was clinically tested on women considering injectables. And the results will surprise you because after four weeks, 97 % said they would choose this cream over injectable filler.

21:14And this was based on a self-assessment questionnaire of 35 subjects after four weeks of use as directed. And this cream, it has a three peptide technology, which combines the most effective wrinkle smoothing peptides that boost collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. And they've also boosted this lightweight gel cream formula with argylene, which is another incredible smoothing peptide that improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and lost volume. And with daily use, the peptide plump is clinically proven to improve the look of those pesky lines, like fine lines, the 11s between your eyebrows, and even forehead wrinkles.

21:53And the texture is what really hooked me on this cream, everyone, because it's got a cushiony bounce back texture that kind of mimics the springy youthful results that you'll see in your skin. And I like how my makeup goes on really smooth after I apply the cream. So if you wanna check out Strivectin Peptide Plump yourself, you can discover the science behind great skin with Strivectin at strivectin.com. Once again, you can discover the science behind great skin with Strivectin at strivectin.com. And you can learn more at strivectin.com. We'll link to this product in our show notes and on our website.

22:28Now back to the show. today's episode is brought to you in part by quince so we've been talking about how to get a luxe look for less today and one brand that caroline and i both bonded over it's called quince if you don't know about it you have to check it out they carry the most premium items at such a low price i'm talking about cashmere sweaters for 50 they have 14 karat gold jewelry And what I'm eyeballing right now, I'm loving their classic Italian leather totes. They've got great designs. There's a hand-woven tote. It's only$149.90. Comes in six shades. They've got a gorgeous cognac, dark brown, classic black.

23:11It has different compartments in it that will fit your phone, your laptop. I can't believe the price. And I'm also eyeballing this Italian suede shopper tote. it's on pre-order right now$149.90 there's a gorgeous whiskey and a chocolate brown and it just looks like it would be from a designer label it really does so if you're looking for a mother's day gift anybody would love one of those tote bags I'm telling you and I know what you're thinking I don't like fast fashion either but quince only works with factories that use safe ethical and responsible manufacturing practices and premium fabrics and finishes.

23:51So it's not fast fashion. I love that. And you can shop for Mother's Day guests, find them something they're going to love that's thoughtful, timeless, and totally her shop Mother's Day at Quince, go to quince.com slash beauty for free shipping on your order and 365 day returns. That's awesome. That's q u i n c e.com slash beauty to get free shipping and 365 day returns quince.com slash beauty.

24:22What's next, Jill? Okay, so I'm going to talk next about a product that is out of the Maritimes. I'm a proud Maritimer. Hey. PEI forever. So the brand is SkinFix. It is out of Halifax. And I think that this is probably one of the biggest brands that we're talking about today that most people would be surprised to know is Canadian. Yeah, true. Because I did that TikTok video where I was shouting out all of these Canadian brands and everyone's like, oh my God, I use SkinFix every day. I had no idea. It was Canadian, let alone Maritimer. Yeah. She can do a little jig. She loves a lobster roll. So one of my favorite products from the brand is the Skin Fix Triple Lipid Peptide Cream.

25:03I have to give that one a shout out. That is a dead ringer dupe for the SkinCeuticals 242 Restorative Moisturizer. I want to give a shout out to their latest product from Skin Fix. It's the Barrier Balancing Water Cream. And this is brand new. If you have anyone in your life that struggles with acne, like some people with acne are literally afraid to put moisturizer on. It's true. That was me back in the day. Yeah. So I think this is going to be great for especially younger people or just oily skin types in the summer. It's 54 US dollars and 73 in Canada. So you can buy from Sephora or their website directly.

25:38And it's a weightless moisturizer that delivers burst of refreshing hydration that lasts three days. Balanced with acne safe, non-pore clogging formula. and it's very K-beauty. I think that's why I like it so much. Yeah. Oh, that's nice. Very water bank-esque. Oh, that's nice. 2 % humectant blend, 1 % heptopeptide solution, 2.35%, very specific, balancing complex with niacinamide, zinc and green tea that helps to absorb oil and visible redness. So the before and afters were pretty crazy with getting rid of redness. This is a hit. Guaranteed. 100%. They are the kings of barrier. They are. So honestly, like homegrown hit bowing down.

26:21And I just finished the newish ceramide and ectoin gentle gel cleanser from Skin Fix. It won an allure best of beauty in 2024. It's so good. And I and I just finished it this morning. Sad face. They do formulation very well. Yeah. Love it. Yeah. And my daughter, I'm going to give that barrier. Yes. I think that this is going to be a hit. Yeah. It's like moms and daughters will be liking it. For sure. Love. Okay. Speaking of Halifax, the Seven Virtues is one of our both. We both love this brand so much. It is a fragrance brand out of Halifax and we love it so much because she also loves the lobster roll.

27:03But we are just obsessed with Barb Stegman, who is the founder of Seven Virtues and so proud that she's in our world. Yeah. Episode three of Breaking Beauty podcast in 2017, if you want to go check it out. Yeah, we'll link to that on our website. She is a powerhouse. We can't tell her whole brand story here, but she's an activist turned beauty founder. And she created the Seven Virtues back in 2010, kind of to her friend at the time was in war in Afghanistan and was injured. And so she created this line to help create peace, not war. Right. It's like sourcing fair trade ingredients from war-torn regions to create beautiful perfumes.

27:47Yes. That's essentially it. And it has come a long way. And it's at Sephora now. It's been backed now, I believe, by Unilever Ventures. She's crushing it. And when I talked at the very beginning about these people who are so passionate, it's like she's, she is, it's like, you believe in her so much that you believe in the brand. Absolutely. And she has a book called The Seven Virtues, which is based on different philosophies. And honestly, she is one of those people where you speak to her and you're like, yeah, I can do anything. She's like a professional TED Talker now. And she also created a make your own fragrance kind of like lab atelier in Halifax, which I have not been to.

28:29But I think that's so fun and such a beautiful tribute. Like she's so she's such an East Coast woman, like she's never going to leave those roots behind. And she invests in the community. So she put the store there instead of anywhere else that it could have been. And I think it's just beautiful and lovely. Her fragrances are great. One of the things that I think sets it apart is that they use between 22 to 30 percent fragrance oils in their formulas, which is double above the industry standard, which means that the fragrances are long lasting. Jill, I'm holding in my hot little hand their newest fragrance is called Clementine Dream.

29:08Oh, yes. You can have a go of that one. I think people are going to love this for summer. Very fresh. It's got that very like an orange blossom. Energizing. Type of type of a scent to it. But what's really gone gangbusters on, you know, with the TikTok girls is their vanilla fragrances, Vanilla Woods. They've got a vanilla Santel. My favorite is the Amber Vanilla Eau de Parfum. And a regular, don't you love this? Like, it's so nice. It's giving like Le Labo a little bit. The regular size bottles are 94 in the U.S. and 127 in Canada. I'm going to read something that's right on this label. This perfume funds days for girls in advancing period equity in North America.

29:52That's just one thing she's involved in. Yeah, love it. Incredible. And she basically grew up in a trailer park. So she's going to, she tells that story in episode three, like I said, that we're going to link to. So such a, love it. Love that brand. I'm going to talk about a fragrance brand that I like. These do. Okay. We did an episode all about the indie brands you should know about, about two years ago, I think. And I talked about this brand at that time and I'm so happy they're still around. It's called Persons of Interest. And it's just one of the best branding. It's created by Dino Caracciolo.

30:27I hope I'm pronouncing that last name correctly. Do you know? He's the creative force behind Persons of Interest. And he also was in charge of Crown Shaving Co. If you remember that brand. Do you remember? Oh, yes, I do. Yeah, a men's brand. Men's brand that was very much like not elite barbershop, but upscale kind of offerings. Canadian made. So they're all crafted in Ontario and their ingredients are sourced from Canada as well. Plus they have the coolest merch. I was at my hair salon the other day and one of the guys in the salon was wearing a persons of interest jacket. No way. And it's like a black and gold and has like an embroidered kind of like snake on the sleeve.

31:04And then on the back, it says persons of interest. And I want one. Oh my God. I'm on their website now. They have a on the run leather duffel bag. Yeah. And they also have kind of Wayfarer-esque sunglasses with like a little snake on the side. This jacket is badass. He's just doing mad cool stuff. Love. hyper creative and I want to support. So one thing I talked about in our previous episode, one of their more affordable products is the Eucalyptus shower spray. All black, has this kind of logo on it. Carlene, I didn't bring it with me because it's giant. It kind of looks like a Windex trigger on it, but it's chic in your shower.

31:44And then they have like incense cones. All of the fragrances are a delight. They even created a custom fragrance for that permission store on Ossington. Okay. Nice. So they're doing very creative, interesting things. And the fragrance I brought with me to Los Angeles is called Crybaby. Ooh, great name. Wow. And if you want to smell. Yes, I do. I'm not sure if it's exactly your type, but I really see how it dries down. It's like sweet off the hop, like candy-ish off the hop, but I bet it dries down very differently. You totally nailed it because it has citrus, sugar cotton candy which normally I'd be like no no but it's dries down beautifully violet rose patchouli sandalwood amber and vanilla very cool candles incense hand care like if you want the look but you want to support Canadian or you want you just want to have cool ass branding in your house and your people are going to be like what is that yeah this is the brand absolutely the coolest product.

32:41So everyone needs to check that out as well. Okay. Yeah. Speaking of body products, I don't even want to talk about this product. I want to gatekeep it so badly because I'm afraid for them. I'm afraid that somebody out there listening is going to buy this and recreate it for some big non-Canadian company and make so much money off of it. And where will Beauty From B's B after that. This is the Beauty from B's Body Serum. It's$19 US. That's a$21 Canadian. And it is just absolute heaven in a bottle. Body wash, body serum. So it's a body serum. And this product was recommended to me by my girlfriend who has been going through like oncology treatments.

33:33And so she only wants things that are like super, super natural. And she's like, I'm addicted to this this body serum the sweet vanilla body serum and I was like well if you're addicted I need to try it so I called it in and one of the things that they wrote me after they shipped it was we hope you'll be as addicted to it as we are and I was like oh god there's that word addicted addicted if anybody's addicted to a beauty product you know it's gonna go ape shit so this product looks like liquid honey okay in this it looks like as you say like a body wash but it's like the the kind of sensation of it is like a liquid honey okay like look when you pour it out it's just this beautiful like golden and then it melts into like a creamy like serum almost and then it melts into an oil but you apply it in the shower as soon as you turn off the shower and your skin is still a bit wet, you apply this all over and then you dry your skin with the towel.

34:35Okay. And it seals in everything. It smells like a day at the spa. It is not oily on the skin when you apply it in that way. And like, it's that thing where when you get in the shower the next day, you can still see that the droplets are like bouncing off the outside of your skin. Right, you've created a barrier. Because you've created that barrier. So once again, it's just like Canadian winters. You need this like all summer long to have shiny, glowy legs. You need this. It's avocado oil, castor seed oil, coconut oil, essential oils, lavandula, shea butter, beeswax, beeswax. Right. We've got beeswax in the house.

35:17OK, well, anyway, I love you. I feel sorry for you for what I just did. Consider me addicted. Color me addicted. And they also came out with a bronze version, which I haven't tried yet. Yeah. I was going to say they got you in your sweet spot because I'm going to out you a little bit here. I don't really think Carlene's lubing up. How do I know that? You've talked about it. So this is, say your trademark, it's Lazy Slash Busy. I'm Lazy Slash Busy. And I don't, it is true, I don't moisturize my body. Like once the once all the care goes into my face, there's nothing. There's nothing. I am not taking it to the tits.

35:58TM, Caroline Hirons. I am not because I'm lazy. It is perfect for me because I'm in the shower. It's the motion. I'm I've got to dry off anyway. I put it on. If there's anything that falls, it's falling in the bathtub or in the shower, which is the beauty of applying it this way. And a little goes along. It works for my lifestyle because, again, yeah, it's like what do I do? I have to put on a robe. When do I put on the body cream? It's like, I love that. You put the clothes on and it's wet and this way you towel after. It's so genius. Anyways. Yeah, no, it's good. It's good. It's good to have the options.

36:32If anybody knocks it off, by the way, I am calling you out. I am calling you out so hard. Yeah. Watch out, everyone. Yeah. Okay. Well, it won't go unnoticed. Well, if you have a little bit more time to spend to put on body cream. I have a recommendation who knows what's under these linen pants Jill you just never know never know okay I'm going to shout out Deal Bodies so this is a Canadian brand founded in Toronto by BIPOC woman named Chris Deal Leonardo she's the best I love her you've met her Carleen yeah she's really cool I want to have a coffee with her she's fantastic So she's created a body care line that's the whole idea is that it's waterless.

37:20So every ingredient is active. That's concentrated, super concentrated. And it is she has four products in the lineup. She teased that she might have something else new. So we will we will try to share that when we can. But I really like the Cruise Control Smooth and Plump Body Moisturizer. This is$38 Canadian. It's a retinol alternative in there. It's got Bakuchi oil and half a percent of salicylic acid, which suits me really well. Very gently exfoliating, but very nourishing as well. But you can get dressed to your point. It's it kind of it kind of gives a plumping effect for the skin on the body, which usually you don't want to like necessarily invest a lot of money in that.

38:02So I think she's nailed the price point. And I really love the formula and that you do notice that gentle exfoliation over time. So in a way, I think that it's kind of saving you time because you don't have to do like a separate scrub necessarily like all and every time you shower. But this kind of like getting the job done while you're out and about. And then it's lovely. It's not greasy. Not at all. Yeah. Not at all. So she I just want people to support her. She was part of the Sephora Accelerate a couple of years ago. She's since like rebranded. But there's just people you root for and she's one of them.

38:34And the products are great. And the branding is, I mean, I'm looking at, so the box is like a Kelly green. And so is this bottle I'm looking at. And it's got almost like NASCAR vibes where it's just like very, very cool. Very like sexy Formula One kind of. Yeah, exactly. Quick shout out to another former guest on our show, Mary Feuthers. She goes by at Madame Sweat on TikTok. And fun fact, in 2024, her episode was our most popular of the entire year. What? It was. Stop. So we did a whole thing with her about hygiene, etiquette, what to do with ingrown hairs. How to transition it to a natural deodorant.

39:13I know that was part of it. Correct. So she's another one that her brand is called Kaya Naturals, K-A-I-A. Yeah. And she has a multitude of body products that really are fixes for ingrown hairs, brightening under the arms, these kinds of things. But she is a legend when it comes to product development. Yeah, she is. And she is a badass. She looks like a very cool grandmother, black glasses, black turtleneck, cool ass haircut. Yeah. Madame Sweat. She kind of has this like persona to her that you'd know her from TikTok. I think she has like over a million followers now. Her brand should be bigger than it is.

39:49I know. She's very quiet about it. Very polite. Very Canadian. Yes. And so I wanted to make sure we gave her a shout out. Oh, my gosh. And also shouting out that episode because it did so well. But the underarm bar that she created. Yeah. It's a soap. you keep in the shower, you lather up under your armpits 20 times on each side, and it basically kills the bacteria that would cause odor. And then that allows you to wear a natural deodorant more effectively. Yeah, that's why it's called the Takasumi Detox. I think you can buy these two products together as a duo. So basically the idea is like you can't just switch to a natural deodorant and expect that you're not going to smell.

40:24You need to go through this detox period. And she has these other products that helps you to like get through there and reset, like reset the pH, reset the bacteria. And she was talking to me about this. Like I met with her eight years ago. I remember in Toronto at the East Room and she already had had this product for years. Like she was way ahead of any other deodorant brand is like standing on the shoulders of Mary Futher. So this is the OG. It's Canadian. She's incredible. She knows exactly what's up. And I had a great sit down with her talking about my brand and she offered to have these quarterly where we're going to kind of, you know, give each other insights and stuff like that.

41:09So big love for Mary and this line. That reminds me, I did a photo shoot with her after you had left and I ended up in her bathtub. We need to unearth this. Both of us in our black turtlenecks in the dead of February. And we were and I was in the shower with her. It was a whole thing. And I I don't know how come it never ended up seeing the light of day. Probably just I just got busy and it didn't get posted. It was hilarious. Amazing. Fully clothed, by the way. Amazing. And I think I think Kaya Naturals is at Alta now, by the way, so you can find it in the U.S. But anyways, it's just extremely effective.

41:41So if anybody out there is looking for a new option for summer, you're like, I'm going to make the switch to natural deodorant. Absolutely. Check out the underarm bar. You need part one, which is the underarm bar, and you need the deodorant. And it really freaking works. Hell yeah.

42:00Today's episode is brought to you in part by Vegamore. So I know I'm not alone in this journey we never asked for when it comes to hair thinning. Mine started a couple of years ago with perimenopause. I know so many of you are dealing with shedding as well. I'm really excited to try Vegamore's Grow Hair Serum. And I'm going to tell you why. When it first launched at Sephora in Canada, There were a bunch of us sitting around a table and one person explained how they were skeptical of it, but they actually tried it. And she showed me before and afters on her phone after using it for three months.

42:34And let me tell you, it did look more filled in. And these were personal photos, not from like a website or anything like that. So I'm really excited to get on board with this. And I'm kind of not surprised that Grow Hair Serum was recently named the number one prestige hair serum because of what I actually saw. And their formulas are vegan. They're cruelty free. They're formulated without harsh chemicals. It's not a drug. It's actually using peptides, plant stem cells and plant based phytoactives to deliver these results in as little as three months. And it is clinically tested. So 93 % of users experienced less shedding and 90 % saw an improvement in the overall appearance of their hair.

43:16That's pretty impressive. But it's low commitment. That's what I like about it. The grow hair serum, you just apply a few drops once a day. You can use it on wet hair, dry hair. It's super lightweight and it won't make your roots greasy. So it's not going to ruin your hair. And we all know that you need to have consistency when it comes to any hair thinning solution. So I'm going to be using it every day. If you're tired of dealing with shedding and thinning, take back control of your hair with Vegamore. For a limited time, go to vegamore.com slash beauty. Code beauty to get 20 % off your first order.

43:51That's V-E-G-A-M-O-U-R.com slash beauty. Code beauty to get 20 % off your first order. V-E-G-A-M-O-U-R.com slash beauty. Code beauty.

44:08Okay, I'm going to switch it up. We've got some more skincare, but you know, Canadians do color cosmetics as well. So let's talk about that for a bit. I mean, probably the best known company for that, I want to say, is Nudestix. Would you agree with that? That hasn't been acquired yet. Like Ilya, RMS Beauty. I think Nudestix has been around like 10 years, 11 years. Yeah. So they've definitely expanded, but they started out with these nudies matte. Everybody probably has seen them. Yeah, exactly. And so on one stick on one side, it's like kind of like the multiple from NARS. And then on the other side, there's a little brush, which I used a few times, but I generally don't don't use that part.

44:49But I think where they they've kind of branched out. So now they have like cheek color and a compact. I think they're stacking them. They have a whole skincare line, all of that. And Taylor is just a delight. They've both sisters who launched it. The Frankles were on our show very early episode. Episode nine. And her mother. Jenny Frankel. Jenny Frankel helped to develop this line. She is a veteran cosmetic chemist. It came from MAC back in the day. MAC and Cover FX. Yeah, that's right. So another great Canadian brand that got swept away and is long forgotten, but it was fantastic. Yeah, absolutely.

45:29Of all the products they have, the Nudies Matte Blush Stick is still my favorite. I'm wearing it today. I'm wearing a full face of Canadian beauty and I will do a TikTok or a reel or whatever and show you everything. But this is still my favorite. It's got great color payoff. I think it was around the time when there was a need for like a clean version of NARS multiple. And I think that's exactly what they delivered with these products. Great pigment payoff. And to me, there's so many cream blushes in the world today. Absolutely. I have so many favorites, but I think a lot of them are too sheer and slide off and don't know what they're doing.

46:10So I do go back to this Nudie's blush stick. I'm wearing the shade Picante today, still going strong. And this product is$35 in the U.S. and 44 in Canada with 13 shades. Love it. Yeah. I also want to give a shout out to some Canadian makeup. This is founded by Bazma Hamid, who has been on our show. She's an incredibly inspiring founder who, again, we don't have time to get into all of their stories, but she had suffered burn when she was three years old and went through basically hell and back with skin grafts and tons of operations to try to fix the skin on her face. And then she pioneered this medical procedure that's scar camouflage.

46:53She does it professionally here in Beverly Hills in Toronto. She does it for royals, celebrities. Yes. And just incredibly inspiring. Badass. Yeah. Does not take no for an answer. So she came out with a color cosmetics line that has nearly 40 shades, I believe, of foundation. And what's special about it is that it's a stick foundation and it is there's zero drag. You hold it up for the peeps. It's in this hot pink stick. Stick. and it's called the Basma Beauty Foundation Stick. And it's around$58 in the US, a little bit more in Canada. And I love the coverage that this gives. It's one of the best stick foundations that you can do buildable coverage.

47:35And that's no surprise given her background because it's all about, she wants to make sure nothing's sticking to skin texture. It's about gliding. It's about giving the coverage, but not making sort of any uneven texture more apparent. So I don't know if you've tried this, Carlene. I have not. She also pioneered a brush, complexion brush that goes with it. And I am really impressed. And the shade ranges are beautiful, right from quite fair to the darkest tone on the Fitzpatrick scale. She really nailed the formula. Okay. Another color cosmetics line we need to shout out. This line is created in Canada is 1999 Beauty.

48:16And what is great about this line is that it's age inclusive, hence the name. So it's 19 slash 99. And what it means is that this product line is for people, all ages, all genders. And I think they've done that very well in their shoots and their campaigns to illustrate that. And the lead makeup artist who also assists in product development is a makeup artist named Simone Otis. Love her. And I've shot with her many times. Speaking of Canadian icons, I worked at a magazine called Flair for 13 years, which was iconic. It was like the Vogue of the North. I grew up on it. Linda Evangelista covers.

48:57I was so proud to work at that magazine. And I did many shoots with Simone and she's incredibly talented. I love her. I have a soft spot in my heart for her. So the fact that she has a role in this brand, I think is great. The products that they initially launched with are kind of like these multiple sticks that are more precision. Yeah, like an eyeliner. Yeah, it looks like an eyeliner. So, yeah, there are other multiple sticks on the market. This is considered, quote unquote, clean. And the shade that I'm wearing today is called Bore, B-O-R. And it's a great like purpley eggplant shade. I'm wearing it along my eyes.

49:37But yesterday, I think it was I had it on my cheek. So I just do like a small X on each cheek. This is the product. This is like the cool girl makeup brand of Canada right now. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Like Katie Denna was talking about a bunch of their products she loves. It's a makeup artist's favorite. Yeah, exactly. So there's 12 shades. It's 26 US dollars. And in Canada, it's a little bit more, probably 33 or something like that. And so it's just really fun. And there's a lot of like they came out with blushes like this hot pink one. That's so cute. Which is like in a wider baton, this cream blush stick.

50:13And it reminds me of the old school NARS SCAP. SCAP or whatever. Yeah, which is like a bright pink fuchsia, like ode to Schiaparelli. And honestly, like we very well could have used that on a shoot together. So I love that she's kind of recreated this clean version. Love it. And very cool. That's 1999. Okay. I'm just going to quickly give Ilya Beauty a shout out. They're from Vancouver. They're big dig up by, bought by Clarence, but I'm obsessed with the new eye stylist. There's 20 of them in this cup. And what I like about them, Carlene, is they did a lot of similar shades, but one matte version, one shimmer.

50:51Okay. So that is their POV here. They're like very easy to put on. They said they're inspired by Renaissance paintings, but not, you don't have to be an artist to use them. So it's an eyeshadow stick, It goes on beautifully. The glide is fantastic. You might remember you were obsessed with these when they were about to launch in 2023, but they kind of pumped the brakes. It wasn't exactly where they wanted in terms of formulation. So I wanted to give a shout out now. And the colors are back. The colors are fantastic. I think it's very on brand for Ilya. A little bit more on the muted side. But there is a pink and a green, a couple little surprises.

51:29Yeah. And I love they've partnered with artists and it's got Canadian roots. So I want to shout it out. Absolutely. And so, yeah, I think we'll have to end it off with some quick shout outs now because we've been talking so long. We could have done a two-part special, honestly. Well, I need to shout out a budget find because it's incredible to me that this brand is all Canadian, made in Canada, and the rock bottom prices that they come through with. Yes. So Indeed Labs, it's celebrating 15 years this year. The iconic product is Nano Blur, still used on Euphoria set. Indeed Labs, we interviewed the co-founder, Demetra Davison back in December.

52:06It's on our YouTube channel. Plenty of people have found that interview. And they were like, oh, Demetra sharing her side of the story. The Brandon Truax lore, because they work together. Again, we can't get into the whole thing. There's so many stories behind the stories. But Indeed Labs was co-founded initially by Demetra and Brandon Truax. He created the formulations for a lot of their early hero products, including Nanoblur, including the Hydrolone serum, which I love, including and many others. And I wanted to give two products a shout out specifically from them. One is their Snoxon two under eye patches.

52:40These are$19.99. Okay. Put them in the fridge, 30 pairs. It's such great value. Amazing. I absolutely love these eye patches. And they just created a new line that Demetra kind of teased when she was on our show. Oh, yes. It's a line for tweens and it's called, they have three products. My favorite that I'm going to shout out is the Goat Milk Toner. This is$14.99. It's so cute. You got me at goat milk. You got me at goat milk. Right. And it literally is like a dupe for the glazing milk from Haley Beaver's Road. And it's a third of the price. Right. It's a silky, milky toner, very K-Beauty inspired, absorbs quickly.

53:19It has deep hydration, oil shine control. So it is meant for like a slightly younger skin type. But I definitely find like in the summer you could be I could be wearing it. Right. For sure. And I brought with me to Los Angeles their pimple patches again,$9.99. And I think there's 45. Yeah. The deals keep coming. Thank you indeed, Labs. So check them out. Absolutely. They are amazing. Demetra is amazing. And I know we have to go because we've been talking and talking. But I need to do a quick shout out to this brand new line that hit my desk. It's called Vintage Noon. How cute is that? Great branding.

53:56It's meant to be completely gender neutral. It's giving vacation skincare vibes, just with like this great like 70s packaging. It's kind of like orange and beige. And this is a redness recovery overnight mask and moisturizer. So like a metal tube. Yeah, it's in a like an old school metal tube. It's 47 US dollars, 65 Canadian. It is made in Canada. This is brand new. It definitely appeals to me because it is for its redness reducing. So this is supposed to be an item that you bring on vacation with you. It's good for the whole family. If you've gotten too much sun, if your barrier has been busted by the airplane, which happens to me all the time, you can use this as like a mask, a leave on mask.

54:39It reduces inflammation and it has some great just like tried and true ingredients that help with the redness. So like centella asiatica, it's got calendula, again, one of my all-time favorite ingredients, ceramides, shea butter, and what else? Maple leaf extract. How Canadian can we get? So I needed to shout them out. Okay. Thank you. So everyone, thank you for listening. Please watch this on YouTube.
