0:00The following podcast is a dear media production.

0:07Welcome to Breaking Beauty, the podcast all about the breakthrough people, products, and moments in beauty. We're your hosts, Jill Dunn and Carlene Higgins.

0:20Hey, everyone. Welcome back to Breaking Beauty podcast. It's your trusty hosts, Jill and Carlene here. How are you, Carlene? I'm doing great. I'm just sorting my stuff out technically here, guys. adjusting. Making adjustments. Well, it's nice to see you. It's nice to see you too. In my basement of my condo, once again, with all products surrounding us, if you guys are listening, that's the visual. There's a table in front of us with so many fun things to talk about. And it's just going to be a really exciting episode. That's what we do. We put our editor hats on when we do these damn good episodes.

0:55So if you're a new listener, we are two beauty editors turned beauty podcasters. We have been swiping and swatching for 20 years each, probably between the two of us. Came from the magazine world, jumped on the mic seven years ago. And we have incredible guests on our show. We've had everyone from Haley Bieber to Dr. Shereen Idris to, oh my gosh, back in the day, Dr. Pimple Popper. And we also have these monthly episodes, we call them the damn goods, where we try dozens and dozens of products in the market and then edit it down to what we believe is hashtag damn good. And that's what we're doing today with a best of fall roundup.

1:34We're calling this like a shoppable trend report, which is the first time we've positioned one of these that way. But I really love this idea because this is what we did in our magazine days. Trend reports would take up so much of our time and it would be like 10 pages in the magazine, right? Yeah, absolutely. Connecting the dots. That's what we do. So we're going to tell you about all the trends you need to know for fall 2024. Yes. And what to buy if you want to buy into these trends. And of course, you know, we'll give you our little tips and tricks on how we've used these products ourselves for real life.

2:09Yeah. And I've been very inspired just this last week because we're in the midst of Toronto International Film Festival. You see all of the amazing stars on the red carpet serving these looks. You and I saw an amazing movie together, courtesy of L 'Oreal Paris on Friday night called We Live in Time. It was a world premiere. Yeah. And it stars Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield. And it's a real tearjerker. I'll say that. But funny as well. Heartwarming and funny and uplifting overall. Yeah. And we had such a great time together. And speaking of celebs, I recently interviewed Cara Delevingne. Oh, my God.

2:47Carlene's been doing some freelance writing again, yo. No. Yeah. I haven't done in so long. Don't ask me what possessed me. But I had a former editor ask me if I wanted to write the story. And I was like, sure. So I actually did a hair report, trend report for the kit. Fun. You can catch online. And my interview with Cara Delevingne, just like the consummate rebel who is the new face of L 'Oreal Paris. Oh, exciting. And did you meet her? It was virtual. It was on Zoom. So I did meet her over Zoom. Very cool. Yeah. She's just like the forever rebel in beauty, you know, and she just completely owns it.

3:21Yeah. I'm like, what do you do with your makeup when you're not getting your makeup done? She's like, nothing. What do you do on your brows? Nothing. But, you know, but she's she's a model. Right. So she's all about getting having other people do her makeup and the idea of transforming and all of that. And it's an attitude. And it's all about being able to be who you are and how L 'Oreal is really embracing that, whether it's, you know, Viola Davis as a face or Andy McDowell, who's been a face for so long. I'm excited to read it. And Cara, open invitation to come on Breaking Beauty Podcast. Hello.

3:54In the meantime, we are going to be talking about some trends like blur season, how peptides are peaking, the return of K-beauty, high-tech hair. I mean, we are covering everything you need to know. Everything. And then some. And I want to encourage everyone, we should announce that we also just started a monthly faves newsletter. So in our link in bio, and we'll link it in our show notes, please sign up for our newsletter because that's where we're sharing things we like or love. And we're also tiptoeing into talking about some of our favorite places to go to get haircuts, skin treatments, makeup done, all of these things.

4:31And they can be from various cities, a directory of sorts. And we are putting that all packaged together in a monthly newsletter. So be sure to sign up. Absolutely. and as always we will always indicate if something is sponsored or not so you know we're always super transparent about that and we appreciate all of our sponsors who support our show and keep us running every single week for the most part it's it's editorial and the directory is it's not paid or anything i had one of my friends reach out to me and say hey i really wanted to try that xlv yeah you wrote about where should i should i really go to that place which is compass dermatology It's like abso-freaking-lutely.

5:10That's where we go. That is, you know, it's not paid. We have gotten a couple of services gratis, but I've also paid for my XLV there. I bought a big package. Of course. We will always tell you if something is hashtag ad or paid in the context of the episode, in the context of a blog, in the context of an Instagram reel, whatever, we always will disclose that. But anyway, that's the housekeeping. So let's get into it. The Best of Fall 2024 Trend Shopping Guide right now. Save me.

5:43Today's episode is brought to you in part by Victoria Beckham Beauty. Whenever my friends ask me what my favorite makeup brands are, I always have Victoria Beckham top of mind simply because it's so damn good. It really comes down to the thoughtfulness of the products, how easy they are to use and how well they perform. Case in point, the contour stylist. I'm not an expert makeup artist by any means, but I do find that contouring my face is honestly the number one thing that takes me from blah to boom in just one step. This contour stick comes in four shades and is much slimmer in design than most contour sticks you'd see on the market.

6:21What's great about this one is it gives me better control and it blends in super easily. So I'll go in and do the sides of my nose, the cupid's bow of my lips. I get closer to my hairline, which I like. Of course, I do a line along my lower cheekbones and I just look more sculpted and lifted afterwards, but very, very naturally. I also love the matte eyewear eyeshadow sticks. I've never really been a palette person. I like something that works on lazy slash busy types like me. So for every day, I just wear the light beige shade, draw it on like a child would with a crayon really close to my lash line.

6:59And then I just blend it out with a clean brush and bang, I'm done. It stays put all day. There's no creasing. It feels really comfortable. It's just makeup that really suits me and my lifestyle. And if you haven't listened to our episode with Victoria Beckham when she first launched her line a couple of years back, definitely go back and have a listen in our archives. She will charm you. Believe me. And we have a promo code for you. You can try Victoria Beckham Beauty for yourself. Visit victoriabeckhambeauty.com and use code beauty at checkout for 20 % off your first purchase. That's Victoria, B-E-C-K-H-A-M, beauty.com.

7:39Use code beauty for 20 % off your first order. Some exclusions apply.

7:47Hey, I'm Josh Peck. And I'm Ben Soffer. and we're the good guys. On our show, every week we talk about buzzy pop culture stories. Maybe answer a couple of your voicemails and go into a moment of the week that makes you say, what are you, nuts? And I swear, it's so much better than this promo. Anyway, there's a lot of guys out there, but we're the good ones. Stream good guys every Monday wherever you get your podcasts. Apple, Spotify, anywhere. You know what? Don't listen.

8:24Okay, Jill, we're going to kick it off with this, what you're calling blur season. Yes. Tell us what we need to know. What is it? What have you tried? I'm sure I'm not alone noticing that every other product that has come across my desk in the last month or two has had the word blur in there. So it could be a blur foundation like Easy Blur from Huda Beauty, the latest moisturizer from Dr. Dennis Gross, blur and repair cream. Yep. Tried it. Countless powders. Tower 28. Yeah. And I think why this trend is happening to just like contextualize it a bit. I think it's like, yes, people want to look good, but I think everybody's a little bit sick of just that hyper filtered look we see on social media.

9:07And somebody who's sort of leading this charge is Huda Beauty. In 2021, Huda Kattan stated that she was ceasing to use Photoshop and ceasing to use any filters on her social media. So what direction that took her in from a product development point of view is she wants to look as good as someone with a filter on, but in real life. Yeah. So I appreciate that. And it's like stepping. It's quite a task from a product innovation point of view. Absolutely. I mean, she's somebody who was at the height of YouTube when, you know, and the 2016 Instagram. Exactly. And like the rise of the makeup artists who were just like the self-taught makeup YouTubers who were just ruling the scene.

9:55So I just think she has a very keen eye for knowing how to make herself look good on camera. And of course, this isn't her first foray into, well, maybe not Bloor, but she has easy bait. Correct. I love the Easy Bake pressed powder, which I talked about in the past. And the loose powder is iconic as well. So she's come out with this foundation. It's called the Easy Blur Natural Airbrush Foundation with niacinamide. $37.50 in Canada. There's also a primer. And the whole idea, she's creating a one, two, three step. So you're going to blur with the primer. You're going to have the foundation on. And then you can use her Easy Bake powder on top.

10:36Okay. So this is going to blow your mind. So her primer is silicone free. Okay. It's water-based. The foundation, however, is oil-based. Okay. It's turning everything on its head of what we've been told about. Primer. Primer and foundation having to both be water-based. Right. Or both be oil-based. It sure is. And for the record, there's 29 shades of this foundation, including her deepest shade yet that she's ever formulated. It's called Espresso. And so I reached out to Hoda's team to just better understand their perspective with this primer and foundation formulation because it is sort of turning everything on its head that we know.

11:16And they said that they really wanted to sort of debunk the myth that silicone-based products do not work well with water-based ones. And they said that the Easy Blur Primer is water-based. It's a lightweight formula with plant-derived ingredients. And it's meant to absorb quickly into the skin. So you get this smooth sort of refreshed base for Easy Blur Foundation. And unlike silicone-based primers that tend to sit on the surface of the skin, they said that this Easy Blur Primer, it almost creates like an invisible film on your skin. and it kind of minimizes the appearance of pores that way. I can say that it doesn't feel heavy on the skin.

11:58And I really appreciated that they pointed out that the primer is formulated to work with all foundation bases. So smart. I will tell you, just, you know, zooming out, it works. Nothing pills, nothing moves. And it's just like, it's one of the best foundations I've tried in a really long time. Wow. Can I see? Of course. I tried this foundation with the primer without. I think I definitely got longer wear when I wore the primer, but you don't need it. Foundation feels extremely lightweight when you have it on. A tiny amount will do your whole face. It feels beautiful on my hand. I'm obsessed. So I have been reaching for this a lot and I've been wearing it like ever since I got it.

12:45And so if I want my makeup to last all day, yes, I will do the one, two, three, but I often have just been putting the foundation on and that's pretty much enough. And then I've been doing the Tower 28 powder on top to just kind of like the translucent new powder. Yeah. Which is called the Tower 28 Get Set Pressed Powder. There's a translucent shade that I've been using and just in the t-zone okay so can you tell us about the finish of the foundation and the coverage and just like the main so they she says airbrush natural yeah if you actually look at what she has done in her tutorials one layer it's very natural yeah two medium three you're getting that full full coverage okay so it's layering yeah it's layering it up to like any makeup artist would do, you know, but it doesn't look caked on.

13:41Yeah. I want to try this so badly because I just put it on my hand with the primer underneath and it feels so good. Like it feels, it just feels like it's going to be so smooth. I love a natural finish and it, yeah, it just feels like it's not drying at all. So do you find that it, it's like a satin finish at the end or? I think it's very, I think it's very natural satin. Okay. Is that a thing? Yeah. Yeah. No, that sounds about right. Because it's not matte. Because she used to have that foundation that I really liked. Faux filter, it was called. Yeah. That was like you felt it on every square inch of your face.

14:18You got the fullest coverage. Yeah. And we're just beyond that now. Yeah. You know, it worked extremely well. My makeup did not move, but it just didn't feel great. Instagram makeup times. Yeah. Yeah. The big question is, did it blur? Yes, I think so. Okay. I think so, especially if you're wearing the... The primer. The primer underneath. Okay. Also, I really love how this primer feels because it doesn't have silicone in there, but the foundation has silicone. So it's kind of trippy, but it works. Now, I need to tell you about my little secret weapon on the side. I did talk about how I blurred with the Tower 28 powder.

14:58Two little improvements I think they could make. number one the powder doesn't come with a puff okay and it also does not come with a mirror inside the compact oh interesting so you're meant to just use it at home strictly at home i guess yeah yeah like what no if you have a pressed powder yeah you're taking it with you so i can touch up my oily face right okay make it make sense yeah the powder puff at least has to be in there some are you sure it's not hidden in there somewhere i swear this has happened to me before. I've realized lately that like packaging is kind of my nemesis where I'm like, oh, it opens like this and I'll stick my thumb in it or like I just can't get stuff open or sometimes there's like a hidden compartment with.

15:42OK, no, let me see. I'm just double. I'm just fact checking that there's nothing like underneath. Do you know what I mean, though? Sure. But all right. There's nothing there. OK. Now I will say my friend has the pink one and she loves it. She's obsessed with it. perfect for her. This to me, if you have dry skin, stay away. It's got kaolin clay in there and it's just like, it's not... It's oil absorbing. Yeah. And also like Tower 28, their whole point is makeup for sensitive skin. So they're not coming at it from a Huda point of view. Yeah. This is like a nice powder if you don't wear a lot of makeup and you just want to like touch up your T-zone.

16:18Right. Now, I need to tell everybody about this product. If you do not want your base to move. This is a must. This is the L 'Oreal Paris Infallible 3 Second Setting Mist,$13.99 in the U.S.,$19.99 in Canada, small can. Looks like a little bottle of hairspray. Yeah. 36-hour Defy transfer. Okay. And it is... Hairspray for your face. It is. It is. The new-to-market professional-inspired aerosol micro-fine mist lasts for up to 36 hours of wear, instantly dries. It is so much faster drying than any setting spray I've ever tried. And yeah, it probably is hairspray adjacent. Right. But when you really are in that kind of situation, humidity.

17:10At the club. Or for me, going on TV. I did use this on my last TV segment. My makeup was flawless. Yeah. After being under super hot lights, it really, really works. And so cheap. Pretty cheap. Now, I think drag queens would probably say use Lnet, you know, like on their face. But I'm just letting everybody know it's been getting a lot of buzz. And I know why. OK, well, that's the blurring trend, everybody. Now, the other thing I wanted to talk about that you're seeing all over labels everywhere is peptides. Peptides is our second trend. Yes, it is peak peptide season, everyone. So we're seeing peptides basically all over everything.

17:53And so I thought it would be helpful just to go over what peptides are. So peptides are short chains of amino acids and they're really like the building blocks, the foundation for your skin. So if you're talking about collagen, elastin, keratin. And so the idea being that, you know, if you apply these peptide creams and serums, that it's going to help improve the peptides in your skin. Right. So I've also read something from Jordan Samuel that peptides in your skin act as messengers assisting with cellular communication and supporting proteins like collagen and elastin. Right. So they basically tell your proteins to start behaving again because they slow down as you age.

18:36So they basically kickstart and communicate with them to be like, get going. You know, they're like the instructor in front of the spin class. Yeah. And they said there's like he said there's like carrier peptides and signal peptides and neurotransmitter inhibiting peptides and all sort of different functions. Right. So that's so that's probably why you can see like multiple different peptides in one formula. I know the one we've been using, Jill, from Medicaid has like nine different types, 10 different types of peptides in it. Yeah. The Medicaid liquid peptides. It's literally called. And I'm obsessed with that.

19:08By the way, we have a promo code with them. It's in our show notes. Very plumping. Now, the other one that I think is red hot, it's red hot in the U.S. and it's just coming to Canada now is the SkinCeuticals P-T-Ox Peptide Serum. So it's P-T-I-O-X. It's$148 in the U.S.,$180 in Canada, which is like their typical price point. It's quite high. It launched in July in the U.S. and there has been so much buzz about it and so much demand for it in the U.S. that they put it on the Canadian website earlier and started a wait list. Yeah. Because they got so many questions, so many people searching for it.

19:52Right. On the Canadian website that they wanted to let people know that it is coming. And it actually launches in Canada today, the day that this episode comes out. So I think the reason that this is such a big deal is not only because they're really closing in on the peptides idea that people have seen everywhere from so many different brands, but it's the it's really kind of the no talks trend, like people who are moving away from Botox. And that's because what SkinCeuticals, the way that they describe the serum is a needle-free peptide serum for expression lines and glass skin and radiance.

20:32So this is the closest thing that we've seen in recent times that sort of getting to Botox in a bottle. Okay. So like that's funny because like Jordan Samuel is basically like beware of anybody that claims that. Absolutely. Because it's not. A thousand percent. And I would say that as well. And I think that that is why it's so surprising. And I'm not saying that they said Botox in a bottle, but they're saying needle free. The languaging is it says PTOX is a dual purpose serum that can be used as an at home solution for those not ready for professional injections or as an ideal complement to neuromodulator injections.

21:15So they are putting themselves. They're going there. Right. And I think when you see a reputable brand like SkinCeuticals making a claim like this, people are sitting up and listening. Right. Now, the thing about SkinCeuticals, and this is why you pay so much money, is that they do a lot of their own original research and they have clinical claims behind their products as opposed to, you know, a lot of other brands will have, let's say they have 30 women in a room who are going to use this product for four weeks, six weeks, and they self-evaluate. Well, I think I sure I think I look low here. Sure.

21:55I think my lines are reduced, but that's not scientific testing, whereas SkinCeuticals will get out the actual instruments and test that on your skin to show that it has results. So I think that that is why I'm personally really drawn to this product. but I think there's a bit of a trick shot in this product and that is the secondary claim which is glass skin because the other ingredient that is in this product is PHA it also has niacinamate but PHA polyhydroxy acid is a gentler version of AHAs and BHAs so that's what's giving that kind of glass skin glow but it's very very gentle so you can use this product every day and I have been for the last week.

22:42And I definitely do think my skin is looking more even and nice and glowy. And so I think what's great about that idea, though, is that peptides are slow burn. This is the type of product that you need to use ongoingly over weeks and weeks, months and months, years and years to maintain the health of your skin. But if you don't give people like a little instant payoff, Yeah. Then they're going to say, well, I don't know that it's doing anything. So it's got this combination of the two that I think is really successful. And so they're saying that it was tested and proven on all skin tones to reduce the appearance of nine types of expressional wrinkles.

23:24So we're talking about the 11s, the 11s, the nasolabial folds. Thank you. Nasolabial folds, the wrinkles beside your eyes, like all the things, nine different areas. And it showed up to 68 % of an improvement while improving the texture and radiance in one week, like I said. I'm a believer. You know, I think, like we said, if you don't want to shell out the$180, the liquid peptides is a lot less. It's probably half the money. The medication. But this is, like I said, quite different as well, where you're getting that that PHA factor as well. Right. So I think this is absolutely going to pop off.

24:03I think it's going to be the next kind of CE ferulic in terms of how many people are like addicted to it. And just so you know, you're meant to use it after your CE ferulic or after your antioxidant. Did you do that? No, because I don't use vitamin C because it bothers me. Right. OK. Well, that's our peak peptides hit. Now, the other thing that's happening in skincare, Jill, which we talked about recently on the Skinthusiast podcast when we were talking about fall trends, and that was the return of K Beauty and the influence that it's having, the resurgence on TikTok. We're seeing kind of the second life and second interest.

24:41And so, Jill, you had something to say about that, not from a K Beauty brand, but how it's influencing other brands, right? Yeah. I just wanted to shout out a product that's pretty affordable. It's 14 US dollars and 16 in Canada. Love it. And this is the, this is from The Ordinary and it's the Saccharomyces Ferment 30 % Milky Toner. It's a gentle exfoliating toner with yeast ferment technology. I use this, I have been using this for like the last couple of months. It really intrigued me because I first saw Gothamista talk about it. So I got it in my hands and it, the application is like a Milky Toner that you would get from K-Beauty, but obviously The Ordinary is putting their spin on it and making it a lot more affordable.

25:23So I just kind of like put it in my hand. I used it as like the second step exfoliating toner. And it's just extremely gentle, like because of that milky base, I think you would actually really like this. And I just noticed this like overall improvement of the texture, the tone, you know, any little acne marks, they're kind of like more faded. And, you know, I'm an exfoliating junkie, but I do have sensitive skin. So something like this in the mix is better for me, frankly, than some of the other stuff that I love to go to town with. Yeah. So what's doing the exfoliating? The exfoliation happens thanks to an ingredient called N-acetoglucosamine.

26:05It's often abbreviated as NAG on a label. And what makes that really special is that it's a non-acid exfoliation. So the way that something like glycolic acid or lactic acid works on the skin, it kind of works to break down the bonds between skin cells and that gives you the glowy complexion. How this works is it almost prevents those dead skin cells from sticking together. So they're sloughed off in a much more gentle way. And that's why people with sensitive skin types really, really gravitate toward this type of exfoliation. And that's why they can tolerate it as well. and there's some pretty good skincare claims with this product.

26:48After two weeks, they tested this on a group of 25 people. In two weeks, they noticed that there was a reduction in the look of large pores and then in six weeks time, more than 22 % said that it reduced the look of dark spots. So I really appreciate that this is something that sensitive skin types can use two times a day. They're not going to get that irritation and you're getting a lot of those glowy skin benefits. Yeah, it reminds me of the Very Good Light. Right. I can't remember the proper name for that product, but I loved that so much. So if you want to support a actual K-Beauty brand, try the one by Very Good Light because it's really, really good.

27:41shout out to medicaid for supporting this episode we know that peptides are the skincare ingredient this season and i want to turn you on to one product that's become a favorite of mine it's packed with peptides and that's the medicaid's best-selling liquid peptide so it's a serum it comes in a dropper bottle. It's not sticky at all. And it's clinically proven to smooth the look of fine lines and wrinkles in just seven days. I definitely noticed that my forehead is smoother and I'm loving the results. So Medicaid liquid peptides is formulated with 10 powerful peptides in just one bottle and liquid peptides, it reduces the appearance of expression lines and deep set wrinkles.

28:27And if this is the first time that you're hearing about the Medicaid brand, it's a clinically proven British skincare brand known for age defying results. 29:09Now back to the show. Okay. So I'm on a health journey. I've cut out gluten by about 90 % anyway, and heck yeah, I'm drinking my AG1 every afternoon now, right when I hit the three o 'clock wall. I was drinking it in the morning, but then I realized it's actually perfect instead of a sugary snack that I'd usually turn to when I get the mid-afternoon slumps because I really like the taste of it, especially on ice. It's refreshing and not too sweet. If you're not familiar with AG1, it's a foundational nutrition supplement that delivers daily nutrients and gut health support and is backed by multiple research studies.

29:48So you can trust what you're putting in your body. So just like what we've learned about in the world of beauty, nutritional supplements are kind of similar in that some companies rely on individual ingredient research and then put them all together. But you don't really know what the end effect is on the total formula. With AG1, their entire formula is backed by research studies conducted by a third party, double blind. So no labels were shown and placebo controlled. So for my issues of digestion and exhaustion, I really appreciated that 97 % of people in one research study felt more energy after 30 days.

30:28And after 90 days, 97 % of people in that research study felt improved digestion. If I had to recommend one product to support whole body health, it's AG1. And that's why I'm excited to welcome them as a new partner. It's easy and satisfying to start your journey with AG1. Try AG1 and get a free one-year supply of vitamin D3, K2, and five free AG1 travel packs. Oh my gosh, I love those things. With your first purchase at drinkag1.com slash beauty. 31:15So I want to take a beat to talk about hair. Yes. I think the whole field of hair care is just getting so high tech, whether you think about tools. I know that L 'Oreal Professional is coming out with their blow dryer, which is, we've talked about this in a previous episode, it's like going to go neck and neck with Dyson. Right. But it has a whole different technology where it's using like light as opposed to hot air to dry your hair. Yeah. It's almost like as you were talking, I was like, should it even be called a blow dryer? Because I don't think they're using air. It's not blowing anything.

31:48It's light. No, they are using it. There will be there will be like it'll be blowing. OK. But it's not using like coil technology. That's right. It's using actual light. Yes. So that's going to be launching later this year. I know that the samples are very scarce, but as soon as we have it, we will definitely do a review, probably on TikTok. But in the meantime, I know that there's some news that came out from Dyson. Yeah, this was huge. Yeah. So Dyson launched a couple of new things this fall. Yes, they have brand new headphones called OnTrack, which send us some as podcasters. We need great headphones.

32:24And then they also launched an Airwrap Styler ID, which is Bluetooth enabled. so you can connect it to an app on your phone and it tells you how to use the Dyson Airwrap, which I think is kind of genius with a little voice. Well, it's like step-by-step instructions and it's timed as well. Oh, interesting. Because I think a lot of people were like, what do I even do when I get it at home? But the biggest news to me is that they have gone into styling products. And I think this was quite unexpected. Yeah. And I had the good fortune of trying them. So it is actually called Kytoson and Dyson Kytoson is the name of it.

33:03And that's actually a mushroom. And the whole idea is that they are four pre-style creams that you put on soaking wet hair. And each cream is, the cream that you use is dependent on your hair type. So they have one for coily, kinky hair. There's, you know, fine, whatever. And then they have one post-styling serum. and each of these products is 59 us dollars or it's about 68 in canada i do believe not cheap i guess we should have expected that right yeah and it's it's a it's a luxury price point or luxury brand i think it's on par with a kerastase or a k18 or olaplex yeah kind of idea and i'll just show it to you have you seen this at all carlene um i saw just the pictures so it is that kind of like blue and coral colors that you sorry navy blue and coral colors that you see from the the air wrap itself um and except in yeah how do you open this thing so you you it comes off the bottom the lid comes off the bottom so you can go ahead and try it you want so this is the pre-style cream so it's like it's uh like a pump but on the bottom so you kind of dose it into your hand like this.

34:16Okay. There's a little bit of a learning curve to know how much product to put in your hair. But the whole idea is that the pre-style cream, whatever one you choose, is meant to give you flexible and long lasting hold. Because of course, most people that use the air wrap, a lot of the challenges, people would say, my hair didn't hold the curl. So they set out to tackle that. Okay. And it is, and it is like two meant to be two times longer hold than without. Wow. Yeah. So they actually put those claims to the test. I personally have quite thick hair. So I needed with the pre-style cream, I found I needed like two or three pumps on each side of my hair.

35:04And when it was soaking wet, like raked it through and it's, it just gives your hair, It's not sticky. It's not tacky, but you can feel it's bond building is the technology. So then you put it all in and then you style your hair as usual. And so it's meant to give be like make your hair less frizzy, make you have longer hold. And of course, if you're curly hair, that's very important. And I think curly hair girls in particular are going to love this. They tested these pre-style creams in like wet rooms, like where it was 80 plus percent humidity. Yeah. So it's like they really they're always nerding out.

35:41Yeah. They always go over extra. Yeah. Yeah. Extra. Yeah. And so they say that these flexible bonds. So it's the power by Kytosyn technology. The Dyson Trito technology flexibly locks in styles and lightweight structure bonds without stickiness, brittleness or crunch. I will say my hair has never been softer after putting product in it like if you want to feel it right now like I yeah feel feel soft it's like kind of silky but still has the hold which I think is in my experience you usually have one or the other yeah so it allows bonds to move flex recall its style in unison for shiny smoother styles so I definitely did find that it like it helped my air wrap style last longer.

36:30And so that claim, I can attest to that. And then in terms of the post styling hair serum, yes, I think it was nice. Yes, I think it didn't weigh my hair down. But like, is that one as necessary? I don't think so. I think it's all about the pre-style cream. Right. Right. In my opinion. Yeah. Well, your hair always looks smooth from when you use the Dyson Airwrap. I don't know why for my hair. I find it makes my hair look frizzy. Yeah. So maybe that's the type of person who would use the after the post care more so um yeah and like I can get into all the scientific mumbo jumbo but I think I can just leave it there to say that yes I tried it yes I think it is different than other I think it gives longer lasting hold than other stuff that I've tried for with the air wrap because to get the air wrap right it is all about the hair prep yeah it is interesting so yeah so that's my two cents on that and you know I was skeptical because I thought they don't necessarily have a lab on site to be making quote-unquote wet products so how are they going to do this but of course they're they have tons of hairstylists that they work with and yeah they made it happen yeah okay well on the heels of that it's really funny that But I had no idea that the packaging, so you guys can't see this because this is a podcast, but just to go over it again, it's kind of like upside down.

37:55So you know those moisturizers that you'll see in a tub where you push it down and some product pops up from the top and the middle from the little hole? It's like that, but upside down. And the reason that I wanted to go over that again is because the hair product that I wanted to talk about has a very similar mechanism. So strangely. So this one is called Small Wonder Signature Shampoo. It's$38 in the U.S. I don't believe it's available in Canada yet. And this one looks kind of like a pepper grinder. When you first look at it, it's dark red. So yeah, it's like in the shape of a pepper grinder.

38:31And I will say I was kind of confused about how to open it and get the product out because I was trying to twist it like a pepper grinder. Not scheduling, but the packaging conundrums continue. I know. This is what I'm saying. I read the instructions and everything and I was like, I don't get it. And then I finally realized you actually push it. You press down on the bottom and then the product comes out. It's actually powder that comes out. So this is a mess. It's not. It's actually not a mess. And that's the reason why they created this packaging as an innovation is because I guess what they were finding is that this is a water activated powder to lather shampoo.

39:12I see. So they were trying to improve on, I guess, other products like this in the market that would come out where when you had it in your shower, once the water touched the sides and stuff, it could just get like gunky. Maybe the packaging could get plugged. Yeah. I was just going to say like when you have Dermalogica microphone, you cannot keep it in the shower. Exactly. So that's why they came out with this innovation where it's kind of upside down. So the water can't actually touch the hole that it comes out on. It's like not vacuum sealed, but kind of. Yeah, it's just it. Yeah, it's just that kind of protective mechanism.

39:47So this product actually won an award at Cosmoprof 2024 for best hair product, this innovation. And it also won Marie Claire's 2024 hair award. What I think is the most innovative about this shampoo has nothing to do with the packaging. It's actually the formula inside. And the reason that I say that is because this brand, Small Wonder, actually worked with a well-known, I'm using their wording, well-known global salon product manufacturer that had been working on dehydrating salon formulas for nine years before they joined in on this process. So what that means is that it, you know, they aren't just a startup who did it on their own.

40:40This is kind of like a salon brand or a salon level of formula that's in this product. And you can tell. Right. So I had very low expectations when I tried this product in terms of the performance. And what I was most surprised about, pleasantly surprised, was the performance. first of all I got a great lather just by adding some a little bit of water and then the more you work it into your hair the more it lathers because your hair is wet you know as you're kind of scrunching it into your head yeah but after I blow dried it I just found it was incredibly clean feeling almost like a clarifying shampoo very fluffy very soft yeah and I really think that is a testament to the fact that it's more like a dehydrated salon brand shampoo than like something made from scratch.

41:33So they use, they do have those like coconut kind of emulsifiers that they use, coconut based. They use like guar in it. And I think the other thing that I'm really liking in it is that they use kaolin that you mentioned before. So that is really for scalp health. And I think that's what gives you almost that clarifying feeling where your hair just feels It's oil absorbing. Super clean after lightweight. So I think the people who are going to love this product are people with fine hair who like a volumizing shampoo. This one really performs. And yeah, people with like thin hair and people who want more like softness.

42:13So I guess if your hair is kind of like brittle. And by the way, all this performance that I'm talking about is based on the shampoo because the conditioner is not out yet. It's going to be out imminently. So I think like with the conditioner, it's probably going to be even better. So I think that's just like a great innovation because really what they set out to do was to try to create this smaller footprint in your shower. And just as a reminder with these powder formulas, because they're waterless, you just get so much more uses out of it.

42:47This episode is generously brought to you in part by our friends at Hero Bread. Hey there, everyone. Fall is here, so it's back to school. And for me, I'm headed back to the gym routine, my supplement program, and eating right. And one of the things that's been hardest for me to break is my relationship with bread. Honestly, if you asked me what my last meal was, bread with salty butter would definitely be a strong side dish. And I just discovered Hero Bread, reinventors of the classic bread and buns you crave, making them healthier without sacrificing any of the taste. We're talking fluffy, delicious bread.

43:21None of that cardboard stuff with no net carbs, zero grams of sugar and fewer calories, plus protein and fiber to keep you feeling great. They even recently launched Hawaiian Rolls. Like what? Soft, fluffy, perfect for sliders without the heavy carbs. For me, Hero Bread fits seamlessly into my post-letting-it-all-loose summer vacay. And I can actually eat what the rest of my family is eating, whether it's French toast on the weekend or a weekday Sammy. Hero Bread's sliced loaves, buns, and tortillas are your new pantry staple. And here's the best part. You can try it for yourself using our promo code.

43:59You can get 10 % off your order at hero.co with the code beauty at checkout. That's B-E-A-U-T-Y at H-E-R-O dot C-O. Keep the carbs out without compromising on flavor with Hero Bread. And now back to our episode.

44:24Now, Jill, the other thing that I'm seeing a ton of, I don't know if you're seeing this, is what Alexis said from our Lipstick Lesbians episode about having clinical claims and makeup. We're now starting to see this fall. Right. So I definitely noticed this in the Peter Thomas Roth, the new collagen sticks. Okay. I don't know if you've seen these, Jill. I feel like these are like a dupe of the Le Balm from Chanel. That's quite a claim. Well, they are. They're like a dupe of that. But what they've done, you know, to try to put their own spin on it or whatever. So these are like sticks. They're sticks.

45:02They're in a much cheaper packaging, I will say. There's like a bronze one and a blush one over there. But it has that similar texture to Le Balm where it's like that kind of bouncy it gives you like a highlight effect but they have clinical claims attached to it that you know it's supposed to have collagen it's supposed to give you like this improved bounce and radiance over time in addition to temporarily now I'll be honest this feels really gimmicky to me from this type of a product however I do think that the it does make more sense when it comes to like a foundation or a concealer. And we actually talked about this when we did our trend report with Amy.

45:44When we talked about this on Amy's show, the Skinthusiast podcast is that with concealer and foundation that you can definitely like work in those skincare ingredients. So the product I'm loving right now is the MAC Studio Radiance 24-hour Luminous Lift Lift Concealer. And I think the fact that the word Lift is in the name is kind of telling that this idea that there's like a skincare component to it. This is a very luxe packaging. This packaging looks like it could be Tom Ford or something. Yeah. From Mac, this is an elevated package. That's true. It feels like heavyweight, almost like glass.

46:24I don't think it is, but that's what it feels like. It's$31 US and$44 in Canada. There's 44 shades. One thing I can tell you is that a little goes a long way with this. Like I'm telling you one dot under my eye will do the whole under eye area. Like I'm continuously just using too much. So this is a weightless radiant concealer designed again for that 24-hour hold. It's a medium buildable coverage. And what they're saying is that you're going to get 90 % immediate hydration and diminishes the look of dark circles over time by 18%. So 18 % doesn't sound like a lot. But when you're talking about, again, clinical testing versus self-evaluation, that is actually, you can probably put more stock in an 18 % improvement versus all these individuals who are so happy to be in the MAC testing room.

47:24I'm sure it's better by 80%. So they did clinical testing on 35 panelists after 12 weeks of use. So I think that's super impressive. But of course, most people are just going to be interested in the wear from a day to day. I was going to say, I don't know if I'm looking for my concealer to lift. It's true. From a skincare point. It's true. But we did we did talk about this, right? Like, what if it could help your acne? I think people with dark circles in particular are always looking for something that they can do. And sometimes with eye creams, they mess around with your eye makeup, right? So this is kind of nice that it's in the makeup.

48:04What I noticed from wearing it is it's definitely at least medium coverage like and and I will say off the hop this is meant to be you can use this all over your face but I think the strength is under the eyes that's where I noticed it's like really made a difference on me it lasted like all day in the evening when I washed off my makeup I had no creasing like no flaking no weird cakey bits in my eye so the wear was just absolutely beautiful. Like I said, a little goes a long way with it. So you can make this last a really long time. I think a lot of people are going to want to compare this to the Radiant Concealer from NARS.

48:49I think that this one's a little more dry. As far as Radiant Concealers go, I think it's not as luminous. It has more coverage and it's not even semi-matte, but it's just like, it's not as wet. It's not as thin. You're getting more coverage. The other tip that I would say is I used a concealer brush, the one that they actually gave me with it. And I much preferred the way that it went on, blended the finish and everything when I use my fingers. I liked sometimes just the warmth of your skin. And it was, for me, it was much, much better. This is a winner. Great. Yeah. Well, Mac, good job. 40 years later, they're still crushing the game.

49:35Exactly. And I'm just going to wrap it up by talking really quickly about blush because I think that blush is still the most, if you want anything, one thing to update your makeup bag this fall, it's still blush. Yeah. And there's so many different textures and formulas out there and you can just really have fun with it. And one that I've been loving is the NYX Cosmetics Butter Melt Blush. It comes in 12 shades. Danae told us about this. Yes. So it comes in 12 shades. It's$10 each in the U.S.,$13.99 in Canada. Wow. I need to see this. So incredibly affordable. The pigment is beautiful. The pigment payoff is beautiful.

50:15A little goes a long way. The color that I've been loving is the one that Danae, and if you're not sure who that is, we interviewed her a couple weeks ago. She's the global brand president of NYX Cosmetics and she recommended Butta Together for me, which is this sort of like soft, almost like dusty pink. Like honestly in the package, I didn't really think that I was going to like this on me, but I actually loved it. And it's like when you put your finger in these formulas, they feel almost creamy, but they are powder. And I just, they're just so blendable, so pretty, really cute packaging. it feels like my old LG phone closed in my hand yeah that's true right yeah like a flip phone it feels like a flip phone and I think that's probably by design and the colors are great what do you think of the formula yeah I mean it feels great I just used what I can't read what the name is but this one's called you know butter it reminds me of orgasm a little bit yes certainly the colors are really on trend and there's a wide variety of shades even some like purples and darker berries which I know would read much better on.

51:19Those are hard shades to formulate and NYX definitely nails it. I wanted to shout that out and just let everybody know in case you did miss it. We have an amazing discount just for this month with NYX Cosmetics at NYXcosmetics.com. If you enter promo code BEAUTY30 at checkout, you get 30 % off. Now, there's some exceptions, but like they have that butter gloss, which is$6 and then you're getting 30 % off. Like run, don't walk. anyway wanted to shout them out yeah absolutely well the last one I would say is that tubing mascaras are still going strong yes this is the new one from Charlotte Tilbury it's the new exaggerize volume mascara it's$29 in the U.S.

52:01$40 in Canada and the claim with this one is that it's a next generation tubing mascara for intense volume with no flaking so the first thing you might notice about this, Jill, is it's it's very much like this art deco. It's a mascara that's in this like almost looks like a perfume kind of thing. Like it's got this voluptuous, this voluptuous curve to it. It reminds me of the old school Anna Sweet. Yeah. Mascara bottle shape or packaging shape. Good one. So this is actually glass, this container, which is very, very unique. And then you open it and it's a curved wand. So what I love about this mascara is that it does live up to its claim, in my opinion, which is nine times more volume and two times more curl effect.

52:52Now, I can't say nine times, but I do think I've been wearing it for like a week and a half. And I feel like it gives you this just tremendous volume, like something that you would really expect from a Charlotte Tilbury product, this curl, this kind of like glamour. And it absolutely on me anyway, does not smudge, does not budge. And I love that. That's a trademark of tubing mascara. That's why we love it so much. But it is hard to get that dramatic volume with a tubing mascara. So really, they're touting this to be a hybrid. But the bottom line is it's just giving you it really does give you this amazing volume and it doesn't volume dollings volume dollings volume I haven't really like loved many of her mascaras so I'm curious to try this one I agree I agree I think she's just she's due for a hit this is the best one yet this is the best one yet for sure okay we're gonna wrap it up but be sure to follow us on social media we'll share some photos of the products that we're talking about and also subscribe to our newsletter and And thank you everyone for tuning in.
