In short
Whether you actually need a business coach, how to tell when coaching is time, how to vet coaches, what coaching should cost, and what level of access to expect.
Guest
Tracy Beavers, from Little Rock, Arkansas. Background: 20+ years teaching marketing/list growth/visibility; corporate long-sales marketing/business development career; worked with hundreds of people/brands; hosts Create Online Business Success podcast; previously consulted via the University of Arkansas Small Business Development Center.
Key claims
Successful people use mentors/coaches; coaching helps with indecision, imposter syndrome, and turning “stories” into facts; coaches should have clear specialty (visibility/online marketing/sales/list growth, not product-market strategy). Vetting: check cohesive messaging across platforms, watch interviews, and talk to past clients; beware “pay $50k for five minutes” bad actors and anyone demanding one rigid method. Examples: clients who spent $40k–$100k with little to show; Voxer access between biweekly Zoom calls.
Notable examples
Romance, Arkansas anecdote; “scuba gear” metaphor for in-your-business discovery.

We share quick tips, things you can do right now, and then we add a little bit of chaos at the end of every episode. We also keep it short, like this intro. Let's check it out. We are back for Do This, Not That. And I have a great friend. I have a great human being here. I'm so excited. We're going to be talking about coaching stuff, which we've never talked about before. And I have like the ultimate business coach here. If you don't know Tracy Beavers, I don't know who you are. First of all, she has an amazing podcast that I was lucky enough to be on called Create Online Business Success.
0:37I love it. And for the last 20 years or so, Tracy has been teaching and showing and doing how do you grow your list? How do you do this marketing stuff? How do you get attention? How do you break through? And she is this ultimate coach. She's worked with hundreds of people and brands and things and companies, and we're going to dig into it all. So Tracy, excited to have you here. I'm thrilled to be here. We're back together again. Yes, we are. So everyone can now hear that you have a really cool accent, or maybe I have the accent, depending on where you're from. So before we get into all this, i want to so you're from arkansas is that right yes little rock arkansas right smack dab in the middle now what the little that i know about arkansas is that you all have i just said you all you all have very odd names cities and places in arkansas so i want to play a game really quick to see how little i know and how ridiculous the names are can you give me a name of a place in arkansas that may or may not be real yes and then i want to guess if it's real because i want to see how ridiculous these names are yes okay let's start with let's start with this one this one might be easy cabot that has to be real it is real and it's pronounced cabot when you put it into siri or the direction cabot okay now i'm ready for a harder one okay romance no there's no chance you have romance arkansas it's true sir and also fun fact lots of brides drive to romance arkansas to mail their wedding invitations out so they are postcard postage stamped romance arkansas that's amazing now let me ask a question when you when when your husband wants to be romantic does he take you to romance arkansas for dinner no slacker tell him to listen to this episode get on it everybody go to romance arkansas that's a great idea mailing stuff out from there that's amazing all right let's get into this thing you know uh we've done 650 episodes this podcast and we've never once talked about the world of business coaching and all of it and that's the reason i really wanted you on because i see first of all there's a lot of people out there that say their business coaches not like you who's like an elite business coach but i also am always like do do I need a business coach?
2:54Who should have a business coach? Do you get it? If you're looking for a new job, like who, who, who needs a business coach? Who is it really for? What do you do? Great question. Great question. My family asked me the same thing. Uncle Joe, God love him every holiday looks at me and goes, so are you working? And I'm like, oh my stars. Okay. Uncle Joe. So yes, to answer your question, let's just dial it, not even back to, to, to business coaching, but coaching. And you know this, Jay, anybody that has been successful and gotten to the top of their game has a coach. Athletes, Warren Buffett, the Forbes people, the Dillard's people, everybody has a mentor.
3:36You could call it a mentor. You could call it a coach. You could call it a consultant. You can call it whatever you want. Basically, it's somebody that's a sounding board that can see around the corners you can't see around and anticipate the things that you're not thinking about and also pull you back when you've got too many ideas swirling and you need somebody to say, that's a great idea. We're going to put it in your parking lot because we're going to work on that priority items for the next 90 days to get you where you really want to go. Not this shiny thing over here that you think is really cool and you want to jump ship and work on that.
4:08So it's somebody that can really see the holistic nature of your business. What are the true goals? And also what are the fears that are popping up when you're building a business? Because I don't know about you, but it's tough. It's a freaking roller coaster. Some days I think that I am woo. And the content I made is I deserve a gold medal. And other days I'm like, man, I can't coach my way out of paper sack. And so that's when a coach can help you. Okay. I have like 400 questions. My first question is how do you know that it's time to get a coach? Yeah, I think there's several signs. One is if you are not moving forward, like you are literally, I, I, I office at my kitchen table.
4:52If I am sitting at my kitchen table and I am frozen and I'm not doing anything and I have had the same goal on my list for a while and it's not happening, that's when I need to reach out and get some help. Somebody that can map it out for me and say, do this, do this, do this, do this. If you are talking crap to yourself on a daily basis, you know, that that's nasty stuff we say to ourselves, the imposter syndrome, the doubt, the fear, if that is lingering, that's a really good sign that you need somebody on your side that can help you. We just talked about this in my alumni mastermind this morning, is what you're saying based on fact, or is it based on a story?
5:32That's when a coach can come in and go, what are the facts about what you're saying? Are they true? Or is it based on an irrational fear? And then talk about what is the fear and then talk through how to overcome that. Okay. So I, I, I'm, I'm in therapy every week. I have not, I'm not ashamed to admit it. I think more men need to talk about it because I think it's a stigma for men to be in therapy. I'm in therapy every week. And if I didn't go, I mean, forget about it. Okay. Um, and so what I'm curious about is like, how does somebody be like, I need to go into like therapy therapy versus I need a coach for my business?
6:09Yeah. So I am not a therapist. I'm not a licensed counselor psychology. I know, I know enough to, to have a conversation, a short conversation about mindset with you, but if there is truly something deeper, childhood wounds, childhood trauma, um, marriage situations that are popping up that are affecting the business, that is not anything that it's in my wheelhouse. And so that's where I'm going to say, look, let me help you find somebody that can help you deal with that. And I'm going to help you run the tactical strategy of the business, increasing the income, increasing the visibility, and helping you meet your business goals while you go find the true therapist that can help untangle all the stuff that's causing you to not meet your goals in the first place.
6:52Do most people go to a business coach or coach when they are a solopreneur, a small business owner, or can you be, you know, the director of marketing for whatever and want to coach as well? Is it only for a business owner? No, it's not. And it's interesting that you say that because when I, one of the things that I did when I first started out, I was a couple of years in and it was during COVID and the, um, and I, my 20 year career that you mentioned, Jay, just to clarify for the audience that was in corporate long sales career, marketing, business development, and all that stuff. And that's what led to the business coaching I do now.
7:27But the University of Arkansas has a small business development center. Every state has one. And they asked me to be a consultant. And so in that role, I was helping startups. I was helping online business owners. I was helping brick and mortar. And so all of those businesses were looking for a coach. And a client I had a couple of years later was the sales manager for a title insurance company. and she needed help helping her salespeople because she's like, I feel like a broken record. I feel like I'm saying the same thing to them every week, every month. They're not, something's not clicking.
8:06I need somebody else to come in here and probably say the same thing I'm saying, but say it in a different way while they're actually listening. And so all of those people needed guidance. And again, someone to prioritize the items, make the pathway clear and keep them on track. So all of those people you mentioned benefit. Okay. So, so I've, I don't know, reached out to coaches in the past and, and, and said, Ooh, maybe this is a good fit, not a good fit, whatever. And every time I'm on talking to a potential coach, whatever I am like sold to, like, I am like, this person's amazing. Like I, uh, I'm an idiot.
8:45Like everybody seems like the greatest person, whatever. Yeah. If you're going to go down the path of like a coach, how do you really, I mean, of course, Tracy's the best. you're the greatest coach of all time. But in general, what should you be like looking for in a potential coach to know you really got the right fit for you? I love this question because, and you know this, when COVID happened, it felt like everybody became a coach, whether they were qualified or not, even some that went and got certifications. In my, I was like, oh no, you don't have any business doing this. And also there was a lot, and there still are a lot of bad actors out there that will say to you, oh, Jay, I can solve all your business problems.
9:26It's just going to cost you$50 ,000 to work with me for five minutes. And, you know, they'll sign up and they'll take your money and they won't do anything. So it's very, very important now more than ever to do your due diligence. Follow someone. Find them on every social platform. See if everything they're saying is cohesive. Go to their website. See if the messaging there matches what they're presenting online. Listen to their podcast or find them being interviewed on podcasts. If they've been in a summit, watch that speech. Go to their YouTube channel. Just check them out. And then also see if you can figure out who they've been working with and talk to those people.
10:07Because before you sign up with anybody, including me, it needs to be a good fit. And I will tell someone when we get on a curiosity call, it's as much for me as it is for the other person, because there is no way I'm going to allow someone to pay me to work with them at an elite level. If it's not a fit, that's not fair to them. And so it's my it's upon me to say, you know what? I don't think I'm the best fit for you, but let me I've got other business coaches that I know that could help you with those goals you've got. Because my lane in business coaching is visibility, online, marketing, sales, list growth, bringing in leads, having conversations, and converting into buyers.
10:49Now, if you need somebody that's going to talk to you about bringing a product to market, I'm not your girl. And that's important to know. What does this coach do? What is their specialty? And then really vet them. Really vet them. And then also at the end of the day, if somebody says to you, if anybody ever says to you, you have to do it this way or you will not be successful, you need to run for the hills. Because what I tell my coaches and students all the time is I'm going to tell you what I did and I'm going to tell you what I think is great for your business. But at the end of the day, you're the CEO and you get to decide if what I'm saying is authentic to you.
11:26And if it's not, let's talk about it and let's tweak it to where you can get to a point where you can move forward. but I'm not going to say you've got to do it my way. Cause that's, that's BS. All right. I'm going to ask some that you're not going to want to answer, but this is not related to your business, but I think everyone out there, if I'm listening to this, I'm like, how much does it cost to have a coach? So give me a spectrum of what a engagement could look like. Again, this is not necessarily your business, but in the coaching world, if somebody is going to engage, what should they expect is reasonable?
11:58That's a great question. And you know what? It's kind of all over the map. Which is annoying to me because I'm not what I consider a high ticket. For an elite one-to-one coaching package with me is around$4 ,000. How low does that last? About three months. Okay. Okay. That's cool. Thanks. My eight-week group coaching accelerator is$997. I think it's a bargain. Yeah. But there are other coaches out there that will charge$10 ,000 for the same three-month time frame. or 15th. And that's where this kind of becomes the wild, wild west is because there's not a standard of you coach, you ask for this much per hour or this much per session or this much for whatever.
12:42And anybody can charge what they want. I have had clients come to me in tears because they have spent thousands and thousands. One lady had spent a hundred thousand dollars and she had no money to show for it. Oh yeah. Another gal had spent 40 ,000 and, and then seven, another gal spent 70 ,000 and it just breaks my heart. So do people don't have then like, if they engage with you for three months or another coach coaching in general, uh, what is the expectation? Like you get like a call every other week. Do you get the text with the person? Like, like how, how tight can you be with your coach?
13:16Yeah. For me, I'm in your pocket. So for my elite one-to-one, I like to say that I'm going to put on my scuba gear and I'm going to go into your business with my scuba gear on and I'm uncovering everything that you have done to see what you have, what you don't have, what are the priorities, what do we need to move forward and I'm going to map that out for you because I don't want you sitting in indecision. So for me, that three months is six calls on Zoom. So we meet every other week on Zoom. But in between, this is where the magic happens. For me, I don't think that's enough. I want my clients to never have to wait two weeks to talk to me.
13:53So I give them Voxer access. Because if we talk about something today, and then you go to execute tomorrow, and you're like, oh, crap, am I getting this right? Am I doing this the way Tracy recommended? Or you want my eyes on your sales page, your opt in page, your social media content before you post it, your graphic, your whatever, I want you to be able to reach me. Because that's my job. Yeah, I think that's important for anybody considering a coach or whatever, that you ask what type of level of access you have, because I don't think the way that you do it is the norm. It's amazing, but I don't think it's the norm.
14:26So I want to ask one more, one more serious question before I get to ridiculous question. So like, like, I just came out with a book, right? And after I came out with a book, and it was like all about you could do it in life and whatever. And I felt like, like the biggest imposter because I don't have it all together. I'm screwing up daily. I have massive anxiety. I still have imposter syndrome, even though I wrote how to deal with it and all. You being a coach, do you, do you just have the most, your life so like you've nailed it? Like you never have any issues. You don't even need a coach or whatever.
14:58Are you just a perfect human? Oh, Lord in heaven. No. And if my husband and children could hear you, they would die laughing. No, I tell, I am not the smartest person in the room and I don't want to be. One of the things I love about the mastermind I put together is it's for all the students that have gone through the eight week program. They go into the alumni mastermind. And what I love about it is it's not the Tracy Beaver show. And I don't want it to be because I have good ideas. Are they the best ideas? Not always. Sometimes they're pretty darn good, but I'm not perfect. And I don't know all the answers and I will never pretend to.
15:31That was one of the things I learned when I was in corporate, when I was navigating the real estate industry from a sales standpoint and people were asking me questions I didn't know the answer to. And I felt bad about it until I realized, you know what, Tracy, that's an education moment for you. You need to thank that person for asking you that question. Then go find the answer and come back and give it to them. You've learned something. You've knocked their socks off. And you know, you don't have to say the people that pretend that they've got all their shiz together are really not my people.
15:59I, the people that are the influencers online who look perfect all the time and they never stub their toe and you know, their hair is always perfectly fixed and what i can't that's no i can't do it lucky uh for you i'm the opposite of that i'm a disaster i think that's why we get along so well right right we get along and here's the other reason we get along because you have horrible taste in tv and so do i i want to know something i know that you watch outlander are you the only person in the state of arkansas i feel like you should be watching you know like yellowstone or not to like you know stereotype but who in arkansas watches outlander i feel like that doesn't fit well fair question now uh it in my defense it's my daughter's fault she started watching it she got me turned on to it my husband wouldn't watch it with me but since we've been since we planned a trip to scotland he started watching it and then he wanted to go see all the castles that were on it and so now we're going through the whole season um but we do love land man i can't wait for that landman's the best man man is the i love that show billy bob thornton is the best it is and everything that comes out of his mouth i put my son would say it's just because he's so dry and the way he puts things love it and um gosh what's the other one oh ted lasso who doesn't love ted lasso bring that back you know i feel like is there any other non-arkansas show that you watch do you watch like i don't know severance on apple or something like people that know how to ride a horse don't normally watch.
17:32That's so funny. We do love Love on the Spectrum. That's a great show. That is a fantastic show. Yes, that's amazing. Yeah, I feel like that's everybody. That's everybody's show. Are you a Real Housewives person? Real Housewives of Arkansas? That would be funny. The whole thing would be, oh, bless her heart. Oh, bless your heart. And the thing about the bless your heart is, Jay, you don't know if people are really saying it to be nice. No, they're not. No, they're not. They're not. Bless your heart means, oh, I feel so bad for you. You're an idiot. Right. Exactly. But we're just too sweet to say anything about it.
18:08No, the Real Housewives, they stress me out because they yell at each other. Yes, they do. And I'm like, oh, I can't do that. So that's too much for me. Yes. Well, you're not too much. You're amazing. Listen, how can everybody find you, get involved with you? Everyone needs you to be their coach and everything. Tell everybody what they got to do. I thank you so much for having me. Nearly 700 episodes in and business coaching had somehow never come up, which is strange given how many people started calling themselves one around 2020. Tracy Beavers has actually been doing it at an elite level for two decades, and she gets refreshingly blunt with Jay Schwedelson about real price tags, the bad actors taking $50,000 for nothing, and the one sentence that should make you walk away from a sales call immediately. Also settled here: Romance, Arkansas is a real place, and brides drive there just for the postmark.
