Key claims

September has the second-highest webinar show-up rate; August is lowest. Reuse top-performing content by renaming and adding a few tactics/stats/slides or converting it into a webinar. Calling it “insider session” instead of “webinar” increases registrations ~24% (World Data Research). Adding “live” to the naming convention (e.g., “Live Insider Session”) adds ~12% more registrations. Goldcast data: Fridays have the highest show-up rate; best time is 11am–2pm ET. Only 7.4% of webinars occur on Fridays, so testing Fridays can capture untapped attendance.

Notable examples

“Webinar” vs “Insider Session” vs “Live Insider Session”; “Live Crash Course,” “Live Insider Briefing,” “Live Ask Me Anything.”

0:01Welcome to Do This, Not That, the podcast for marketers. We share quick tips, things you can do right now, and then we add a little bit of chaos at the end of every episode. We also keep it short, like this intro. Let's check it out. We are back for Do This, Not That, and I want to do a special episode just on webinars. Why would I want to do that? Webinars are so boring. Now, webinars crush it, and there's some new things that we need to know, some things that are changing that can actually have a huge impact on how many people are registering, showing up, doing all things for your webinar. So the reason I want to do this now, people don't realize this, but September actually has the second highest webinar show up rate of the year out of any month.

0:48You know which month has the lowest show up rate out of any month? August. And the reason that matters is coming out of August, we're like, oh, maybe we shouldn't do more webinars. Maybe we shouldn't do blah, blah, blah, because it didn't work. We have to always be looking at the bigger picture, because if you let a month like August impact if you're going to do webinars again, that's where it can really, really hurt you. Now, what you want to do in September, let's say, oh, I wasn't even planning one in September, though, and it's the second highest show up rate. What should I do? Here's the easy thing.

1:20You are allowed. It is okay. Go back to the first half of the year. What webinar did you do or what piece of content did you put out there that did the best? It could be a guide. It could be a webinar. It could be a short form video. It could be anything. All right. You go and you find that thing, whatever it was that was awesome. You don't create something new. First of all, you rename it. You add a few new tactics, a few new stats, maybe three new slides, and then you do it again. or you turn that piece of content into a webinar. You don't want September to just come and go and not take advantage of this crazy time because what happens is in September, we're like, oh, I didn't get all this stuff done I was gonna do this year.

2:05I didn't change that vendor this year. I didn't do whatever. I gotta step it up. So we need to tap into that mindset. Another thing related to webinars that is updated and new and different is what we're calling a webinar. Now, we all know that we don't call a webinar a webinar, all right? We don't want to do that. The webinar is the category of the thing. It's not what you want to call it because when you hear the word webinar, we know that that's epically boring, okay? So, and we're going to get into one little tweak that's new, but we know, for example, that if you were going to do an A-B test and you were going to leave everything the same, the speakers, the creative, the timing, the topic, all of that.

2:51And all you do is a head-to-head test of webinar versus another naming convention, webinar versus insider session. Which one would you rather attend? I'd rather attend an insider session. And we see that in the data from World Data Research that your registration rates go up by about 24 % by calling it an insider session versus a webinar. So if you're calling it a webinar, stop listening and change that. But The new thing now is there's one extra word to add to the naming convention of what it is that you're promoting. So instead of just calling it an insider session, if you add the word live to the start of it, live insider session, live crash course, live insider briefing, live ask me anything.

3:37If you add the word live to the thing that you are now calling your webinar, it gives an additional 12 % lift to registrations. So if you're calling your thing a webinar, epic fail. But what you really want to be doing now is adding the word live to the thing that you're going to be calling it. Now, let's get into the last piece, which is wild. There is new data out from GoldCast. Goldcast puts on thousands and thousands and thousands of webinars. They're part of Cvent, okay? And they came out with this data that was wild. And they said, and this is the same thing that I see with my data, that Friday is the best day for webinars.

4:20It's not Tuesday. It's not Wednesday. It's not Thursday. The highest show-up rate of any day of the week now is on Fridays. This is from all of Gold Coast's data. And that includes every market, whether you're marketing to IT, regulated industries, healthcare, finance, small business. Fridays is the day and the window of time is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Eastern time is what is working the best. And here's the wildest part about all of it. The reason that you need to be testing Fridays. How many, what percentage of webinars do you think actually occur on Fridays? It's only 7.4 % of webinars occur on Fridays, and yet it has the highest show-up rate.

5:05If you are not testing Fridays, you are leaving it on the table. All right, last thing. I've been working really hard on this, so I hope you'll check it out. I have taken everything that I know about webinars. I have done thousands of webinars. I decided I'm gonna put this all in a course, okay? In a course, and this course is gonna take everyone through how to get people to wanna register for your webinars, how to get people to show up for your webinars, what to do during the webinars, how to get that engagement, what do you want to tell the speakers to make sure they're engaging, how do you follow up afterwards, how do you get them to go to Pipeline, I'm putting it all into one course.

5:38And this is the first time I'm talking about in this podcast. If you get on the early access list now, I'm doing a live launch of this course in October. You can't buy the course until the end of October. But if you join the early access list literally right now and you get on that list, then when we open it up, you're going to get this big discounted pricing. And I have this whole funnel that I created that I'm going to be sending out all these extra benefits to anybody on the early access list. Okay. All these extra doodads and information I got about how to do webinars. And here's the thing.

6:10If you get on the early access list, there's no obligation. It doesn't mean you have to buy the course or anything like that, but it locks in your spot. All you got to do is go to everythingwebinars.com. okay that is everythingwebinars.com to get on the early access list I've worked really hard on this if you care at all about webinars I am telling you this thing will be a game changer for your organization so go to everythingwebinars.com now there's no obligation if you put your name on the list and I hope you check it out wait don't go anywhere there's two really important things I want to tell you first off my book is out stupider people have done it and I don't know how but this book has made it to the USA Today bestseller list, one of the top books in the entire country.

6:56Now, all net author proceeds are going to the V Foundation for Cancer Research. And between this book and things that we're doing, we've now donated$130 ,000 in the fight against cancer. If you buy this book, if you buy the Kindle, the audio on Amazon, on Barnes and Noble, anywhere, money is going to fight cancer. We need your help. Please grab a copy of Stupider People have done it. The second thing is I want to work with you. I want to amplify your brand. I want my agency to help you get more customers, more subscribers, more whatever. I want to partner with you in so many different ways. All you got to do is go to jschwedelson.com, jschwedelson.com.

7:35And then there's a button in the upper right-hand corner that says partner. Fill out that form. Let's work together. Let's do stuff. And if this wasn't the worst podcast you've ever heard, it would be amazing if you follow the show, if you leave a comment, if you tell your friends about it, I appreciate you and go out there and crush it.
