Key claims

LinkedIn CEO Daniel Shapiro’s “walk and talk” videos drive higher engagement (41% higher on personal pages; 72% higher on company pages). A human-powered alternative to ChatGPT (“chat tjb.com”) is growing fast after a $6,000 San Francisco billboard; it scaled from 50–100 questions/day to 5,000+ questions/hour using volunteers. EU AI Act is in effect Aug 2; labeling AI content isn’t required for everything, but marketers must prepare for stricter rules later (2027–2028). University of Pennsylvania/Hartford analysis of 200+ ChatGPT advertisers found lower-income users are served more ads.

Notable examples

OpenAI’s backlash over a luxury influencer “summer camp” beekeeping retreat at Wildflower Farms; Netflix’s “The Last House” is called a bad movie; host criticizes Real Housewives cast recycling.

0:01Welcome to Do This, Not That, the podcast for marketers. We share quick tips, things you can do right now, and then we add a little bit of chaos at the end of every episode. We also keep it short, like this intro. Let's check it out. We are back for what's up this week from the Do This, Not That podcast. And there's a lot going on in business and marketing life, so let's jump right into it. So first off, LinkedIn. LinkedIn is now literally themselves telling us the content format that we should be using, and it's something called Walk and Talks. So the CEO of LinkedIn, Daniel Shapiro, okay, this dude just went out on his LinkedIn when they had their earnings report, and how did he report the earnings and everything going on with LinkedIn?

0:48He did it via a walk and talk, and I'm going to share the data as to why in a second. but a walk and talk is just that you take your phone you point at yourself and you walk and you talk and the reason this works so well is it's anti-ai slop it feels very real there's motion going on and if you go on that dude daniel shapiro's feed you will see a ton of his content are walk and talks you would think the ceo of linkedin might know the format that's working really really well on his own platform and he does because here's the data okay walk and talks in terms of a video format have a 41 % higher average engagement rate than any other video format posts on personal pages and a 72 % higher engagement rate on company pages, according to World Data Research latest data.

1:36So if you've never tried walk-in talks, I mean, it couldn't be easier. Everybody can do them and they crush it. All right. So what else is going on? Let's talk about AI. This might be my favorite AI story I've heard about in a very, very long time. so there's this guy named tucker james bryant and he like got fed up with all the ai stuff all the chat gpt stuff all that stuff so he went out i don't know if you saw this it was a big news story this week and he created something called chat tjb those are his initials chat tjb.com and it looks just like any other chat ai tool but the deal is there's no ai when you go in there and this is what he started.

2:18It was starting him just for himself. You go in there and you ask it a question, but the deal is he's the dude behind the answer. You're like, what's, what should I have for dinner? And then he answers back. Well, it started to go like well or whatever. And so the funniest part was he then took out a billboard in San Francisco for$6 ,000 advertising this like human AI thing. Instead of AI, AI stands for average individual. That's what he calls AI. high. So when he did that, it went from 50 to like a hundred questions a day. And then in three days, it went to like a thousand questions a day. And then the thing completely blew up to over 5 ,000 questions an hour and it's getting more and more and more.

2:58So he lost his mind and he couldn't be answering all this stuff. So now he has 10 human volunteers that actually are answering this and I've used it. It's the funniest thing ever. Um, and more than 3000 people have now applied to help him out. So it's really cool. You want to have a little fun, check that out at chat, tjb.com. I love that whole thing. Speaking of AI, now this is actually important. The EU, the European Union's AI Act is actually now in effect. This is not something that we could sleep on because the European Union has put together a massive new rulebook and they talked about this like six months ago, but now it's actually in effect as of August 2nd.

3:36And there are a few things we have to be concerned about and a few things we don't have to be concerned about. So if you're using AI, if you're using it for content stuff, if you're doing anything related to AI, you really need to do a deep dive on what you need to be focused on as relates to the EU AI Act. Now, here's the good news. The good news is there was so much pushback that many of the most complicated things are now being punted until 2027, 2028. So no, okay you do not and there's a lot of confusion about this you do not need to right now label everything that has anything that's been made with ai it doesn't need to have a label that says ai made this on everything that you're doing but you do need to familiarize yourself with the eu ai because it's now in effect 2027 is going to get a little bit uh tougher as it relates to all that this was kind of really interesting data that came out this is the there was the first real analysis, deep analysis that has been done on ChatGPT ads.

4:40It was done by the University of Pennsylvania and Harford College. It just came out literally days ago. And they analyzed over across about 200 advertisers and thousands of ads running on ChatGPT. What they found is kind of interesting. Lower income accounts, those people that have lower incomes that are using chat gpt were significantly more likely to be served ads than those people that have a higher income that was the biggest takeaway from this thing so what does that mean in reality basically it means the people least likely to pay to make the ads disappear are the people that are getting the most ads is that a good thing is that a bad thing how do we feel about that i don't know it's just weird um that that's what's happening and you may be like i'm not seeing a lot of ads yeah it's just starting to roll out now and um it is something everyone should be testing that's a whole different topic speaking of open ai oh i feel so bad for them in this way do i feel bad with them i don't know if i feel bad for them but so they decided open ai is like we got to really hit the ground running with our ads products and everything we're doing we have to get cool.

5:54We're not that cool. So they decided to throw this big luxury influencer trip. Did you all see this? This blew up not in a great way at all. So OpenAI threw this influencer luxury trip and they brought 30 creators to Wildflower Farms, which is a luxury resort in like upstate New York. And they basically for something called like summer camp. All right. And they did all these outdoor activities. They had farm to table food and custom swag. And they did beekeeping, which I recently did, which was very cool, but I didn't do it on this trip. I wasn't invited. And basically it was trying to get all these creators think open AI was cool and all this stuff.

6:32Here's the problem. Okay. Here's the thing. When your industry you're in AI, okay, is basically getting hammered over data centers and energy and water usage and all this stuff related to the environment. The idea that the influencer thing that you would do would be nature retreats and beekeeping, it just doesn't line up. It's like, hello, do we miss the memo? So it didn't go well. They got a lot of negative pushback on it. It totally went sideways. No bueno. All right, before we get to the ridiculous portion of this podcast where I share things that are useless, I want to share something that's not useless.

7:14This podcast is specifically sponsored by CallRail. Oh no, it's an ad. I'm not going to pay attention. Come on. CallRail is amazing. It's not just about calls. If you want to know what happens with the attribution from every chat, from every form, from every campaign, from every call, from every text, we use CallRail for this. And you can go and get a free trial of this thing. Free. All you got to do is go to callrail.com slash do this. I am telling you, this has changed the game for my business. and if you want to know what's working your small business big business i don't care go to callrail.com slash d-o-t-h-i-s callrail.com slash do this check it out all right let's get into since you didn't ask so this weekend i watched the number one movie that's on netflix they've been advertising it everywhere called the last house okay and this is about basically a family getting stuck in their house and they can't leave they even ran a billboard all over the place I don't know if you saw this.

8:12There was a billboard run to promote this movie where they had a human being, a real-life human being, in the billboard. And he was trapped in the billboard and he couldn't get out and he lived in the billboard. This movie, Last House, is horrendous. This is a bad movie. This is not a movie that you should watch. I don't know how it got made. Do not watch it. I'm sorry, Netflix. You can do a lot better. And then the last thing, which I think is very important, is that The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip premiered, just came out. And I am also not very happy with this show. I love The Real Housewives franchise.

8:48I love The Ultimate Girls Trip franchise. But the problem with The Real Housewives in general, nobody cares. You've all stopped listening. That's a you problem, probably a me problem. The problem is, other than Real Housewives of Rhode Island and Salt Lake City, all the other cities, we're just bringing back people, these people that have been there for 100 years. We need new cast members. We do not need to go back to people that were from there 20 years ago. They're not interesting. They're annoying. They think they're funny. They're not. We need new cast members on all the Real Housewives shows.

9:22This is my soapbox, and that's what I have to say about that. and by the way we should work together dm me i don't know let dm me about stuff and if you like the podcast follow it leave it a review it actually helps to circulate it and if you don't like it well that's great too have a great day later wait don't go anywhere there's two really important things i want to tell you first off my book is out stupider people have done it and i don't know how but this book has made it to the usa today bestseller list one of the top books in the entire country. The head of a social platform quietly telling you which video format to use is one thing. Doing it by filming himself on a walk is another, and Jay Schwedelson has the engagement numbers that explain why it lands. There's also a chatbot running with zero AI inside it, a European rulebook that just went live, and the first real look at who ChatGPT is actually serving ads to.
