Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:04Hello and welcome to Fashion People. I'm Lauren Sherman, writer of Fox Fashion and Beauty Memo. Line Sheet. And today with me on the show is Yossi Solek, host of Bandsplain and author of Fast and Loose. We're talking Grammy's fashion, the future of Elias, Sydney Sweeney's lingerie launch, and so much more.
25Happy Tuesday, everyone. I am in Los Angeles this week. I'm trying to not do much and just enjoy this weather. In Monday's Line Sheet, I get into the Epstein files. I spent way too much time on Sunday looking through them. I'm sure I didn't find everything you want me to find. Message me. I'll try to find more stuff. Just send requests. Anyway, I did attempt to dissect a very peculiar email about Victoria's Secret mastermind Les Wexner written by Epstein, sent to Epstein, sort of like writing notes to himself before the notes app exists. I guess the notes app existed in 2014 when this email happened.
03I don't really remember. The notes app is my life. So I don't know what I would do without it. Anyway, as you may know, I co-wrote a book about Victoria's Secret with Chantal Fernandez, who was on the show last week. The book is called Selling Sexy, Victoria's Secret, and the Unraveling of an American Icon. And it covered their relationship pretty in depth. But if you want to know more, read more online sheet. Sign up. you know it's not that expensive do it uh i also address a very odd but perhaps not unfounded rumor about sabado de sarno potentially joining ferragamo i don't know if it's true i know that he interviewed there within the last year for what i don't know that's all i know for sure um i reached out to ferragamo they did not have a comment so we'll see um i'll keep you updated as the story develops but this is a fun issue so please check it out and enjoy this moment with yassi by the way is a fellow phoebe philo fangirl i know you will like it yassi solek welcome to fashion people lauren chairman thank you so much for having me it's an honor and a pleasure honor and a pleasure to have you so are you in boston so are you back in los angeles no thankfully, well, not thankfully, I actually really loved Boston, but I'm back in LA.
25Just, it was a little cold from my, uh, my blood in Boston. So tell us what you were up to in Boston. Um, I was at a hardcore festival. Um, cool, hardcore punk and emo music. So you guys can know that I'm the perfect guest to come talk about a 2026 Grammys and Grammy fashion. You know, a lot more about fashion than maybe people realize. Well, it's a hobby. It's an interest and a hobby for me. But I am wearing the t-shirt that I slept in in sweatpants right now. So just take everything I say with a bit of a grain of salt when I'm criticizing these beautiful people. I'm super close to that. I only changed because of school drop-off.
07But that's what I would be wearing now, too. Okay, question for you. What was the fashion like in Boston? Just puffers because it was so cold? Really a lot of puffers. and I don't own a puffer. Nothing against a puffer. It's a utilitarian piece of equipment and that was three degrees. But yeah, lots of puffers, lots of the zip fleeces underneath the puffers. But everyone was like out in the streets. There was an ice protest across the street from our hotel and I was like so impressed to see people. It was one degree outside and they were just out there all day. I was a hearty people. Well, you know, I went to school in Boston and I have some issues with New England and the way of life there.
55But beyond beyond the weather problems. Yeah. So this is my issue. And I do think it's like they come from it's Puritanism. right this is a group of incredibly like on paper progressive people but their actions are often reflect a lot of repression so it's just like a very weird thing where everybody seems super progressive and liberal but they're actually kind of like conservative and repressed but that being said like of course they would go out in the snow and and in the cold more importantly and suffer like that. But I would also say as someone who lived, who grew up on the East Coast sort of, and then lived on the East Coast for most of my life and has been moved to Los Angeles five years ago, we have looked this up and there is a, after you've been in an environment for two years, your body adjusts.
54So when I go back now, the first couple of years going back to the East coast I was totally fine in cold weather now when I go back I'm like extremely affected by it and it's different like Mediterranean cold weather is much easier for me to manage than like dry cold weather yeah yeah it's it was it was something I think the thing that I was the most devastated by was going to Newberry Street and being like oh they tore down paradise and put up a parking lot but the parking lot is like aloe stores and um sweet greens you know yeah what is newberry comics still there yeah but it's like a funko pop store yeah i think they have some records but it's not giving you know i mean i feel like it was already moving in that direction when i lived there 20 years ago but every city is like that though it's like every city you go to is It's just like the exact same Pret a Manger and a Chipotle.
54And you're like, glad I visited. Yeah, that's the world of private equity and development that we live in, Yossi. So speaking of, I don't know if speaking of is the right segue here, but you are a music journalist. And I thought it would be fun and a lover of fashion. I thought it would be fun to have you on to discuss Grammy's fashion. Last night, I went at 10.35 p.m. to the Chateau Marmont, to Bar Marmont, for the W Magazine party with Charlie XCX, co-hosted. It was incredibly crowded. Congrats to Sarah Mumbes because there were a lot of people there. I saw Mahala from Industry. Mahalia Industry, a wonderful show.
40There was like a lot of famous people there. Ludovic Saint-Cernan the fashion designer who dressed one of the big K-pop groups last night didn't he dress Cat's Eye? Cat's Eye, yes not K-pop exactly I know what you mean they're like a girl sort of like a multi-ethnic so not K-pop girl group, no the music has K-pop tones to it but I think they're like a pop group a girl pop group He dressed Cat's Eye. He was there. There were a lot of young, famous people that I don't know who they are. The guys from Connor from Heated Rivalry was there, of course. Oh, OK. He's out here. He looked good. It was it was co-hosted by Anthony Vaccarello from Saint Laurent.
31It was it was a cute party. I was old for it, but it was fun. it's okay there's there's a meme that i always like to reference i don't know if you've seen it where there's like a woman sitting on a couch and it's like okay so there's this 56 year old woman here and that's how i feel every time i go to like literally anything like the hardcore festival any show any party okay so there's this 56 year old woman here and that's fine i don't mind to be that woman yeah my spiritual age is definitely 60 i unfortunately there was not a couch for me just said no I had a good time it was really fun were you wearing high heels I would I would have made it like seven minutes I wore my like zip up boots Lisa with a double eye from the row which are like I think they're very walkable okay um no I it was fun and it was really fun Sarah Moonves seemed to have a great time I I saw Will Welch came outgoing GQ editor I saw Chris and Jason and I didn't see Cara Limba, but she was there.
29David Cho was there with Lane Flersheim. These were the only people I knew. It was just like a very young, cool crowd, but everyone looked great. What did you think of the fashion at the Grammys this year? Because it's not, you can't judge the fashion at the Grammys like you judge fashion at other award shows. It's a different rubric. Yeah, I mean, I think I always, I'm like a little VMA-pilled, So I always like want people to go a little harder in the paint because it's like music and it's fun. And like sometimes I'm a little disappointed by the safety. But I thought there was like some really fab looks this year.
14Me personally. Do you know who all of these people are and do you know their music? Okay. So the answer to the first question is mostly yes. but the answer to the second question is a resounding no. Do you feel our responsibility to engage with some of the music to understand what's happening in culture? Not really. I mean, I'm a music journalist with heavy air quotes, but I traffic in nostalgia and I traffic in guitar rock music. So knowing the ins and outs of the Olivia Dean album is not really my business. I understand. I don't think I will ever know any song that Olivia Dean has sung. It's so fine, babe.
57Every year they make one of these people to sell their CD at Starbucks or whatever. And it's good. And they love Motown. And I understand. Like, Nora Jones has wrought a lot in her wake. And we need it. It's to keep the balance of the universe. Well, she did look really great in Chanel. She was one of my favorites. I loved her red carpet Chanel. Is it custom? Custom Chanel? it's yes it was custom and then i actually really loved her little like sparkly red mini that she performed and it was like giving a little mariah carey with her big hair and her to look at look it up it was like during the best new artist medley i don't know i don't know who the designer was of that but it was like i thought it was very chic and it was very like oh yeah that's cute like michelle pfeiffer what movie is it where michelle pfeiffer was that red little slinky and sings on the piano?
49The Fabulous Baker Boys? We're going to get absolutely grabbed and held by the film community, but sorry. Don't worry, there's no crossover. No Letterboxd Bros listening right now? No, there might be like one Amanda Dobbins fan who still listens occasionally. And the fact that you're going to be on will affect it. Yeah, the piano one is Fabulous Baker Boys. Yeah, okay, great. Oh, yeah, yeah, that's correct. We nailed it. Yeah, she looks adorable. I don't know who made this dress. I doubt it was Chanel. It might have been Chanel also, but highly doubt it. The black and white, though, was fabulous.
29It was one of, I thought Chanel last night, they dressed her and Kendrick Lamar. And I thought that their red carpet is like really kind of coming together and solidifying. And I thought they both looked super great. he has miles of personal style and so I I enjoyed that what else did you like I loved Bad Bunny the first ever men's scaparelli I thought it was so cool the back oh lace up you know what's funny I I my colleague Matt Bellany and your colleague Matt Bellany reached out to me our mutual colleague our mutual colleague reached out to me about this and was like what's up with the front I said oh it's supposed to be like that it's like curved like an hourglass and he said it looks like it doesn't fit him but what what would i know no see i totally disagree because i feel like bad bunny bad bonnie he's one of the only men that can pull something like this off you know like other men could try this and you'd be like sir you look ridiculous like take it to the flamenco hall or whatever but like here like he just has exactly the charisma the confidence like everything looks good on him i also agree i thought he looked great And I like this idea of women's fashion houses making men's clothes and not having a full men's line.
43I'm sure that eventually Chanel will do a full men's collection, but it might be like 10. They keep saying they're not doing it and whatever. Like, that's what they say. So let's respect. But I like that. I love the men's stuff that they've been doing. Like, I love A$AP Rocky. I think he looks so good. Once again, another person that would look good in a trash bag. True. He is, he's just so cute. Adonis, yeah. Most adorable. But I think that, I like that Schiaparelli tried and that it was with him and it, I thought it was a beautiful, beautiful look. The other person that I'm very interested in that I know nothing about her music, but I like the way she dresses is Laufey.
27Oh, you like Laufey's dress? Yeah, you didn't like it? It was like the lavender-ish number. She wore Mew Mew twice. Okay, it was Mew Mew. And then previous to this, the last, I guess, Golden Globe, she wore Balenciaga. And I think the interesting thing is she's styled by Leith Clark, who I like. I don't attend. I like her as an editorial stylist. She's very romantic. I don't tend to like. She styled Keira Knightley for years. I don't know if she still does. I don't tend to like her editorial. I mean, her red carpet styling. It's very British and Violet Cakes London. Like, it's like very sugary.
15And for some reason with this person, is it Laughy? It was Laughy. Laughy. I think you'd be surprised if you heard her music. It's like, it's like bossa nova-y. Oh, interesting. And then the teen, and like little teen girls love her. It's so surprising. It's funny. I've really enjoyed it. And if they're not working together, someone can fact check me. But that's what it when I researched. That's what came up. But I think it's interesting. I don't know. I like the color she uses. I like the like the feeling of of the stuff that she's wearing. And I thought I thought she looked nice. If not, if like kind of expected.
55Yeah. I mean, speaking of not expected, it's a little bit of a way I learn more in German. Addison, right? That's my fucking girl. sorry are we allowed to curse on here i absolutely don't know for yes i'm like i agree she is she's so hot she's so hot like that it was custom alaya right like it was a collaboration between her and dara and alaya i'm living it's like bizarro world marilyn monroe like the like you know addison was probably like i want my belly button ring to show with that like cut out the way that goes went up in the back and it's just so perfect for the way she loves to pose and the makeup was perfect because it was like really subdued with the like kind of cartoonish dress.
35I love it. And the body glitter. Oh, she's, she's perfect. She's perfect. She looked amazing. I thought that Hailey Bieber also wearing custom Aliyah looked really hot and I loved the like sheer panel all the way up to the hip. I thought it was very sexy and, and she looked good. And both of those looks were super, super strong. I want to go back to Aliyah because these will be some of the final Peter Muglier looks before he leaves Aliyah. But was there anyone who was sort of crazy that you thought looked great? Yeah, Lainey Wilson. I loved her. Like, give it, girl. Like, landman fashion. Like, she was like, I'm a country singer.
20I'm Southern. Oh, yes. She had the cowboy hat with the really major shoulder. It was a top with pants. I have no idea who designed it. I tried to look and I couldn't find it. And she had this really chunky turquoise necklace with it. I thought she looked so fabulous. She looks great. Let's look up. Oh, here we go. Country core at the Grammys. Thank you, WWD. Do they know what she... It might be custom. him yeah it definitely was something unusual that i was excited to see at first you know when you first see a look and i was like i don't know about the hat and then i was like no i do know about the hat and i say yes totally yeah they wwd does not credit anyone i'm sure there probably is a designer no i'm sure but they don't i did try to troll the internet to find it but she also has a cowboy boot brand boot label called golden west if you're interested i have to look into that after this recording get myself i love tiana taylor in the custom she looked great she never looks bad but that was like once again only oh you could pull that off tiana taylor and i respect it the necklace i loved that necklace with the hanging it was kind of punk yes chain she has incredible style and also styles herself most of the time like she sometimes gets help from a stylist to call stuff in but she essentially said she was she was trying to work i was told she was trying to work with people for this award season and then in the end was like you know what i've been doing it myself for 20 years i'm gonna keep doing it and i like yeah exactly and it's it's like it she does a good job i was gonna say sometimes it can be like i'll represent myself in court and you're like please i don't think you should yeah or or blake lively styling herself forever look i'm i appreciate it because it's it's creates a lot of content for me that that blake lively styles rather see this is again hot tank i would rather see a blake lively show up with whatever the like sweeping prairie skirt and the whatever she's gonna pull up then see 10 of the same version of like a pretty valentino dress that i will forget in one second although i did think sabrina looked good that was no shade i thought that was really beautiful actually i also loved rose from black pink who were Jean-Baptiste de Valle, which everybody thinks is going out of business, but it was a custom look.
48So clearly they're doing some work in the atelier in Paris, but I love that. I loved it too. I thought she looked awesome. I like an avant-garde moment like that, you know? The other one I liked was, is Dochi, is that how you say it? And Roberto Cavalli? Archival Roberto. Oh no, custom Roberto Cavalli, she said that was like made to look like an era of. I think she always just looks great and has amazing personal style. You can really just tell, especially the Grammys, like who has personal style and who is just like wearing some random thing. And I think she, like you could, if you were Joan Rivers, you could argue that the top didn't fit right, but like whatever.
29I liked the colors and thought it was an interesting look. Yeah, and I liked that it was like kind of drama with like the big skirt. Yes. I thought it was cool.

So on the subject of a lie, who I really think, which I really think won the Grammys in terms of, I think she looked... Wait, we're not even going to talk about Bieber? Oh, I mean, we can. His stage performance? That was my number one look of the whole night. What did he wear? We should also discuss Harry Styles in the Dior cropped bar jacket. was wearing his just boxers and socks the boxers were his own brand is it called skylark yeah which is doing extremely well as it should stay tuned for more reporting on that in line sheet and the person who needs to give me that information is listening and needs to remember to send it to me to bang lauren's line i just i was blown away by this i was like it was just like a guitar an mpc pedals, boxers, socks, a mirror and a rug.
31This man just he blew me away. And also I'm going to say something. I don't usually think men should have nose rings. You're into it. Bieber can pull it off. It's giving like Alice in Chains 1992 vibes. I loved everything about it. That was my favorite look of the Grammys with Bieber and the boxers and the socks. Oh, man. Was it a good? Did you watch the whole thing? I did. Yeah. Was it like objectively a fun evening? and entertaining. It was much better than I thought it was going to be because the Grammys low-key, not really usually, have their finger on the pulse of what's happening. The in-memoriam segments that they made really big with these three big performances, Reba anchored one of them, Lauryn Hill anchored the other one, and the other one was rock with them.
23They were doing the Aussie tribute. They were great. I wish they had done a Beach Boys one. I thought it was kind of they should have done a fourth one with Brian Wilson and had all the pop girls like. Oh, yeah. Songs. That would have been good. But I thought it was nice. Low key, a good a good Grammy. I didn't love Lauren Hill's dress and obviously love her. But I was disappointed. I came around to it at first. I was like, what are you wearing, honey? And then I was like, you know what? It's giving like opera singer drama. And then I was I was back. And then the glasses. I was like, OK, Lauren.
51OK, good argument. Good argument. So what did you think of Harry Styles in the Dior? in the okay i thought that he unfortunately really i thought he looked great but i thought it was unfortunate for like maybe a somber who it's like this is what it should look like if you don't wear a shirt under your jacket understood do you know what i mean it was it was so perfect with the jeans he looked like his hair was like rumbled he was like i'm sorry they made me come here i just got here i'm leaving in five minutes here's whatever the award is goodbye i would say that he may be the best dressed person in Dior red carpet so far since Jonathan Anderson got to Dior.
33Men and women? Yes. Oh. It is, and I think this, once Oscars comes, we're going to get a really good gown, but he just wore this, it's funny because I was talking to a friend when I was in Paris for couture, a man who was like, I would buy a bar jacket, but I'm not buying a cropped one. And it's funny because now you do kind of have to be you do kind of have to again. It's like I don't think every man should wear a bad bunny scapula. I don't think most men should wear bell bottoms. I think almost all men, if you're listening, don't wear bell bottoms. You can't pull it off. Don't do it. No, but some of those men could also my last story.
16I just I loved Charlie's Chrome hearts and I was very proud of myself because I was able to call it. I was like that's giving chrome hearts and I really like that chrome hearts is doing red carpet Charlie didn't walk the carpet but she it was for her she presented um I don't remember which award I'm sorry you guys um but it was this like really cool leather number and I thought it was really cool because it was like a little subdued and I feel like when you're not nominated yeah like Hayley Bieber is a good example like you shouldn't go like full balls out because like it's not your moment you know and I thought Charlie like nailed it with that it was like a really cool charlie-esque like you know edgy leather awesome look but it wasn't like look at me look at me yeah she looks awesome yeah it's really good it it's um like a double-breasted leather crop top and leather pant and leather long skirt with a sash belt essentially yeah it's it's very good talk about the other sash belt i saw that that really bothered me about well why not to be negative what was it what's the first letter and last letter of the name m it's a designer you love so i just like didn't want to come on here and no tell me beef with you i don't it's fine this is the point the let's argue people love it when when we i didn't i didn't like the michael rider selene oh i didn't like it either yeah the with miley yeah no this This is what I will say about it.
47And yeah, I mean, pro Michael Ryder, the best. But I was like, it's giving, like why you put a bird on it, babe? It's full Etsy, put a bird on it. Yeah, I agree. So it was Miley Cyrus in Celine, not a good person for Celine. And this is an issue about Celine. They have not figured out their celebrity strategy, which a lot of brands haven't that are not the like Louis Vuitton, Dior, whatever. Because the thing was, Dior used to just be like Jennifer Aniston and Natalie Portman, but now Jonathan Anderson is there and Jonathan Anderson is like, I want Josh O 'Connor. So all the like cool indie kind of mainstream people, Greta Lee's at Dior now.
24Greta Lee would be wearing tons of Celine and Loewe. She's swearing it a bit, but like she's mostly wearing Dior. Mia Goth is mostly wearing Dior. These are people who, and Celine has not yet figured out their celeb strategy. Who would you, like if it was up to you, who would you cast for them to be their like it's funny ambassadors i've been thinking about this a lot i think that they should like get young cool french girls like adele x whatever her name is the one is that the one that is dating um jarvis cocker's son i i wouldn't know does she have like a little like a mulledy haircut like a haircut her last name is like something i'll i mean i I can't pronounce anything, but I definitely would not be able to pronounce it.
15Amanda Dobbins is a very big fan. Oh, Adele XR Chopelos? I'm sorry, I butchered that like 10 ways to Sunday. I apologize. I would like... Oh, she's so cute. Someone, I think that they should be looking at people with, because the new Celine is all about style. They should be looking at people with very, very natural personal style. And that is going to be a lot more Europeans. And also, it's hard. Because it's just like all the obvious people are at Dior. You know who would be amazing is Alex Turner's fiancé or girlfriend who is a French musician, singer, songwriter. She goes under the name Verlo.
03Her name is Pauline. And she is exactly what you're describing, I feel. She would look perfect in it. Yeah. And Miley Cyrus, it's not obvious. It's just not an obvious. The other person, like Sofia Coppola, where is like hardcore Chanel and hardcore Phoebe Philo, but like she would fuck with some of that stuff. Like those kinds of people, older, cool indie celebrities and then young people with natural style. But it's going to be hard for them to pinpoint. But Miley just doesn't make sense with that brand. And also that look, it just it was too much of a look for her. Like it felt like a costume.
47I was like, like, take like take half of this and then put something else with it or something. It was just too much was going on. I agree. And you know who has looked amazing in Celine is Rose Byrne. Oh, okay. Which is, it's like random. She's not someone who I think of as having like incredible personal style. She works with Kate Young. And for some reason, she's worn a lot of Celine. She wore Chanel to, I believe, the Golden Globes. But she wore a Celine polka dot dress to the Academy Museum gala that was just so good. And so she's looked good in it. but they need to they need to figure it out someone said to me you you shouldn't who listens to this podcast also so whatever but i'm not outing them but they said you know like Alanis Morissette maybe not the exact right person to be like your star at your fashion show for for this brand like it's it needs to be someone who is like fashiony and into into fashion and and has personal style that is not that is like has a European flair I don't know yeah but it's he needs a rocker I mean let's that's those are like from the first collection that I saw with all the bracelets that yeah it was absolutely giving like um when you go to a music festival and you have all the wristbands like yes it's very it's very rocker to me and I'm like let's put some cool rockers in it you know yeah rock rock chicks I sound like a hundred year old person right now No, I bet like Kim Gordon would look great in it.
19Yeah. You know what was surfacing recently? Remember the fake news that she got bit by a coyote in the Whole Foods parking lot? I know. It got sent to me the other day and I was like, what happened? And I looked it up. I'm like, oh, this is fake news from 2016. It's so good. It did surface. I saw Shad D'Souza posted it and I made a little joke with him on DM. So really quickly, I wanted to run through a couple other news items. As we were mentioning, Aliyah was very, very strong showing at this Grammys. And Peter Moulier, who has been the creative director for the last five years, announced on Friday that he's leaving the brand.
01He's going to Versace. I reported this in December. They're only all now confirming this stuff publicly because it takes time. Contracts need to be signed. they need to figure shit out. But I was curious, like, have you, do you engage with this brand as a consumer at all? And, well, that's the first, let's just, let's ask one question at a time. Yes, I absolutely wore my little, um, lap, here's the thing I love, pony hair, bitch, if there's pony, if it has pony hair, that's my real, real search term, don't copy me, um, is pony hair. I have my little, uh, ballet that, you know, the iconic ballet flat they made with the crisscross.
43Love it. I love a lie in general. I mean, the belts and everything's a little expensive for me because I'm on a podcaster salary. But when I can get it in the secondhand market, I love it. I wanted to ask you though, because I am a loyal listener to fashion people, as you know, but I don't have a lot of fluency with the industry. It felt like that was very successful. I felt like I saw those shoes popped the fuck off. The little purses were everywhere. So was it, is it he decided to leave? Okay, I see. So it was incredibly successful. And Olaio was a very tiny business when he started. I think it was probably like, this part, don't quote me on, but it was probably like 40 to 60 to 80 million.
24I know that sounds like a lot of a difference, but it really isn't in fashion terms. It was very, like probably under 60 million, maybe under 40 million when he started. it was a small business that owned by this group this swiss group called richemont that doesn't is more they own cartier and van cleef and arpel and they're more focused on that so their fashion brands they also own chloe have always been you know they're very well regarded in the market but have never been giant chloe is the biggest one out of the fashion brands they own and is that because they didn't have a strong accessory game because that's where they make their money that is partially accessories.
02Partially. Why? And it's also because it's just not the expertise of the business. The guy who runs Richemont is a South African guy named Johan Rupert, and his expertise is in hard luxury. So some hard luxury is doing really well across the board. And if you own one of those businesses, Caring, which owns Gucci, they own Beauxcheron. It's doing very well. LVMH owns Tiffany and Bulgari. They're performing very well. So hard luxury means jewelry. Yes. Hard luxury is jewelry and watches. Hard luxury, the Yossi Salick story. Yes. Watches are like a little bit trickier right now, but diamonds are killing it.

37So anyway, the point being that Alaya was this like pristine brand that when Ezzedine Alaya was alive, no one bothered him. They let him do what he wanted. They tried to develop an accessories business, but it was never big. And that wasn't the point. The point was like sort of to maintain the preserve the brand. When Peter was hired in, I believe it's been five years. So 2021 maybe or a couple years after as Adina Laya died, there was a lot of stress around the fact that like, is he going to ruin this brand? But the reality was not only did he not ruin it, he enhanced it and modernized it and also made it commercial because he is a genius.
19Like he he was Raph Simmons number two at Calvin Klein, at Jill Sander, at Dior, and he played a pivotal role and at Raph's namesake. And he played a pivotal role in those businesses. And he knew how to kind of take the idea of Aliyah and make it into something that a younger consumer, honestly, younger or less or more interested in being in the conversation of fashion, not just this unique thing. so it like I'm sure there were some clients who were turned off by it but you could go and get like the two dresses that I bought during the Peter period one is a very traditional Alaya dress and it could have been in a 1992 collection and it would have that's what I felt about everything I saw because I had this amazing vintage Alaya like like a ballet wrap top in that sort of um you know that fabric that they always use that was kind of like velour almost yeah and then I felt like everything I saw that would come out was reminiscent of that or like the hooded body suit I wanted so bad and then I was like oh that could have absolutely been from the 90s totally connected and the the brilliant thing he did with his CEO Miriam Serrano was they developed this ballet slipper shoe that became it's copied the world over you go to target there are 15 of them now um and then also a really beautiful it's called the teckle bag like a long elongated bag that everyone has copied so the business is now like 150 million dollars a year in sales which is still really tiny you think dior is you know 10 billion it's tiny but like the amount of mind share he was able to to pull in and fashion enthusiasts the whole thing if you can grab the fashion enthusiast you have something and so it was it was working really well i personally think so why would he leave a lot of reasons versace is an amazing brand it's sort of been dragged in america but like in europe it's still very well i live for versace versus again don't steal my search terms but like old versus fire exactly and and so to have the opportunity a to work for the product group work again with ralph simmons his longtime colleague and and have the sort of brand the expansive universe of versace that has never commercially worked because of they've had millions of different owners and the way the business the business is very fragmented it's like it's going to be cleaned up and managed better and i'm sure that and i also personally think he had sort of his his time there I'm sure he would have kept doing incredible collections but I felt like the story he was supposed to tell there had sort of been told and they did put a lot of resources into the business compared to what Richemont normally does but I think the reality of it is Versace 100 % it's the second most well-known brand fashion brand after Chanel in the world.
36And I feel like with Aliyah, it's like you have like, it's an amazing identity, but it's a narrow one, right? Like it's like you, he can't play much further, but like I can imagine going, especially to a Versace that hasn't really had an identity in so long. Like what a Disneyland for someone that's really creative and can like bring this like whole new thing to life with an incredibly rich palette of history. Like how fun. Yes. And of course we are sad about Dario Vitale being fired, but he'll get another job and he's awesome. And that would have been cool it's amazing and and it would have been a great versace but the peter mulier if that's how you pronounce it people some people think german is german is rough for me is he german that's belgian belgian some people think it's cute that i can't pronounce everything i'm sure there are people that find it annoying it's fine smash those stars people being a woman podcaster i'm sure the story is i'm sure there are people that find it annoying of course yeah but you know I think I'm excited to see it and I'm I'm glad that I'm glad that they didn't wait to announce until after his final Elias show because it's just too much the there's a lot of there's because of all these designer changes there's a lot of stress around announcing whether someone's leaving or going or what have you and the reality is you just got to be upfront and honest about it so people can move on and I think that the Prada group in particular they manage the Dario thing exceptionally well.
07It was, I mean, it was like ripping a bandaid off that you rip some skin with the bandaid, but it, it was, it was managed well and it's over and now everybody can move on. So I'm excited for that. You know who would look good in Versace? Mm-hmm. Miley Cyrus? Just circle. She would. That would be a great one. She will look, and she's worn Aliyah and looked amazing. Yeah. Celine, not for her. We're going to find, I might do a like fantasy celebrity lineup for for Celine. You should totally you should do a draft. I still not really understand. I don't understand. I've worked there for a long time and it took me like three years to understand.
45And I'm still a little shaky on it. But sometimes I do listen to them on the big picture and I'm like, but what do you win? And also like you win glory. You win glory. Who wins? Like the do you vote? It's just I don't I don't really get it. I do enjoy them. I think with the big pick, the social media people vote. I'm not sure. We just did a draft in Boston as part of the reason that we did a live band emo draft. Wow, I can't wait for that. Losing the listenership right now. They're like, I did win, but that was, it's hard because I'm always going to win a live draft because it's my show and the people came to see me.
20So yeah, I can't, I cannot wait to see who's on that list and who I'm familiar with. All of them. you remind me of that song screaming infidelities dashboard confessional babe your hair in boston also does because it definitely came out when i was like a sophomore in college and you know i have a lot of hair and it's everywhere it's everywhere babe that song about you okay so on the subject of body con i did want to talk to you about sydney sweeney's lingerie launch and line which is get out of here unscathed okay speaking of pronunciation it's called cern which like s-y-r-n sexy what it's giving to me is sexy Oh, no, I think it's called siren.
17Oh. I just looked at it and I was like, oh, I see what you're trying to do. She's trying to be like a fun spelling of siren. I didn't understand that. Because I was like, okay, cern is the least sexy or libidinal word I could ever hear in my life. I honestly am an idiot and did not. No, no, you're not. They made it confusing. You don't have to misspell things. I did not understand that until this moment. I don't understand how it didn't come to me. Emily Sundberg tweeted something really funny that was like about this brand looking like a salad brand from from 2019 or something. The logo of it.
02Yeah. Yeah. It was extremely funny. But I wrote about this and had all the details right last July. Like I knew who the investors were. I knew she was launching. I did not know the name. I mean, yeah, the logo is just millennial. It looks like it could be a makeup you buy at Sephora. It could be, you know, it's like it could be any. It could be gummies that you take for your hair growth. Like, whatever. And the thing I will say is my feedback about this, and I don't know if I'm ever going to write about it. I'm sure at some point I might have to. I wrote a book about Victoria's Secret, which I've been thinking about a lot because the Epstein files came up and there's a Les Wexner, there's a bunch of stuff about Les Wexner and there was like this one very revealing email that Jeffrey Epstein wrote to himself that was like stream of consciousness notes about Les Wexner and it was addressing a bunch of stuff that we talk about in the book, like Les Wexner's girlfriend that he allegedly paid off and before he got married and also his sister and his mother and all these things that like I spent, many years writing and researching and it was revealing in a certain way.
16And I'm curious, they're probably going to call, Congress is going to probably call Les Wexner, who owned Victoria's Secret for a long time, to the stand during this. He's 88 years old. It's just, it's interesting. I've never understood the relationship between him and Jeffrey Epstein. It's been very hard to, it's impenetrable. And so this was, it's just all like coming up for me so but the point being that like I looked at a lot of bras during that you're gonna be like I looked at a lot of the Epstein emails and I was like me too I spent two days looking at them I feel sick now RIP Peter Atiyah yeah yeah I mean I also looked at I spent too much time looking at them and feel like I haven't done enough work I was like damn I really need to I like went through my list of people and honestly a lot of fashion industry people were not he was much more interested in the tech world and it wasn't it wasn't my crowd so because they can't the fashion people can't help him like extort african governments yeah you know what i mean or to like hide art in like free free holes in like dubai or there is definitely a lot of modeling agency stuff i at some point i might look into it i'm sure people are gonna message me today and be like why didn't you talk about the next model founder blah blah blah it's just personally like i know that that's a big part of it i've never been interested in models which is not just not i just am not interested in them like i i think they're pretty i like there are a few models i like i get that i get excited when they're on the runway most of them i don't even know their names i know guinevere's name not even guinevere vincina is my fucking queen she's my queen like there are people like that but um mostly i just i'm not good with names I'm not yeah it's not my thing but anyway the point being that like I I I got really into like what makes a good bra why do bras not fit what bras are good what bras are bad what bras are quality how do you market a bra all of this stuff and the thing I will say about this I hate the marketing I hate the like branding I think that the stuff looks really nice wow this is my opinion is that like a lot of this stuff looks like shit.
32And I think this stuff looks very nice and probably decent quality. And that is, I'm just looking on the website. I'd have to like buy a bunch of it and examine it to see if it for real is good quality. But like, I am, I have to say I'm impressed by it. And I hope that all the dumb stuff around it does not, this brand will never be a long-term thing. none of these celebrity brands are and anyone who thinks they are is dumb like i don't think sydney sweeney thinks it is you make money on it in the short term and then you say goodbye and you license it or something also you name it this and do you think anyone else thought it was cern yes i think a lot of i think many people including uh the target demo of this brand was like i don't know certain like a great example is they made a garter belt and instead of doing the sort of strap hold bra strap holder thing in a circle she made it like a little heart that's a nice detail like i think this stuff is very pretty i don't wear bras um so that's a little bit falls in the none of my business category but um is it like savage fenty like is are you is that where you're That's very poor quality.
51Okay. I also don't. I don't. Very, very poor quality. Like I worship Rihanna and she's amazing. And I think the idea. I don't think that's her fault. No, it's definitely not. It's the people who run that company. And she is unfortunately connected to them. She, the concept of Savage by Fenty is incredible. And could have, the thing I'm always looking at is like what brands are filching market share from Victoria's Secret. Right. or broadening the market. Is Victoria's Secret still, since you're the expert, are they still sort of the leader of like mid-range bra sales? Yes, dominant player. Who else even, there's not even anyone else.
35Skims, which it's not, you know, Skims is really a loungewear brand. Yeah, I was gonna say it's like cotton triangle bra or whatever. Yeah, like they have filched some market share. The other thing is like airy. When, when triangle bras became a big thing, Victoria's secret ignored it. And this was like their, their public downfall. But in the last couple of years they hired, I don't know. You probably know Adam Selman, but they hired Adam Selman. Not personally, but I'm, uh, was a big fan of his work. He was, was he around a stylist for a while? He was Rihanna stylist for a while. He had an amazing brand himself and now he's there sort of creative director of marketing, but he's in charge of all brand image of pink and victoria secret and now they're doing really well like the market responds you know the they're a public company so that's a little tricky but it's performing well but they still have so much market share of and and there are the the way people shop now you don't have to go to victoria secret you buy all this stuff online there is an opportunity here and so when i saw it i was like oh this is actually cute and and doesn't look like she's leaning into she's like i have big naturals totally let's make a brand around it what's a better brand than than lingerie all of the like wording is very like wink wink yes sexual yeah the the bra is 90 bucks that sounds like a lot lot of money but like most bras fancy bras are 150 if i wear a bra as a not not to be a little bitch yeah um and yeah they're super expensive yeah they're very beautiful they're like works of art you know yeah or brandy which is like 18 so exactly like that is and so 90 bucks for a very nice bra is not bad are you gonna order one under the name of journalism and try it out like i don't know should that be next week's episode where it's like lauren reports back from a week of wearing siren bra.
33I don't personally, during my press tour for Victoria's Secret, I had to talk a lot about what bras and underwear I like. And I don't personally think that that's part of my personal brand as a journalist. So I probably will not be reviewing the bras. I'm glad because I'm going to tell you they've released a study that I saw the other day that said that wearing a bra all the time it has a correlation with breast cancer well let me just tell you you're just putting plastic on your boobs let me just tell you something i'll tell you off the record why i'm not worried about that i don't think that the fashion people readership listenership wants to hear about why i i'm not particularly worried about that but no i don't think i will be reviewing them but we can talk about it at mom's night out perfect can't wait i can't wait either yassi is an honorary member of Mom's Night Out.
27Childless mother representation. Yeah, but all you have to do is have a credit card that you buy stuff on the real wheel. Done and done. Yossi, this was so fun. I'm so glad you joined it. Don't undersell yourself as a fashion person. I know about your contributorship to Garage Magazine. Thank you. Yeah, you guys, real heads will know that me and Sarah Natoff invented podcasting with our fashion week live streams for garage magazine you got to come back is garage folded at some point right yeah well we should bring it back um i also i forgot to say at the top but i want to say at the bottom what was the hottest accessory on the grammy red carpet the ice out pins yes let's fucking go and and i thought like seeing someone like hailey bieber wearing it is powerful it's great and people spoke about it even yeah my man jelly roll like said in his Jesus' speech that Jesus does not pick political parties or something.
25I found it a very emotionally moving Grammys and people really kind of standing up for what they believe in, which is what music should be about. That's powerful. Almost as powerful as you, Yasu. Almost as powerful as my RealReal likes list, which grows each day. I can't wait to compare and contrast in a couple weeks. Thank you for having me, Lauren.
