In short
Fall wedding dressing and dress-code decoding; summer 2026 fitness trends with a focus on Burn (heated infrared strength/cardio); Paris/LA lifestyle shopping and style; fashion advertising effectiveness; J.Crew brand positioning; Gwyneth Paltrow/Sam Altman dinner chatter.
Guests
Sophia Rivka Rossi, author of Between Friends; fashion/fitness commentator and frequent Burn attendee. Host: Lauren Sherman, writer of Puck’s Fashion and Beauty Memo Line Sheet.
Key claims
Macy’s provides a practical fall wedding guide (deep terracotta, rose, forest greens; flowing midi/asymmetrical necklines/sheers; suede mini bags/beading/metallic stilettos). Burn’s infrared heat makes workouts feel “just right,” but studios’ policies (waitlist/no-show fees, late-arrival rules, water outages) can be frustrating. “Chic” is overused and watered down. J.Crew’s marketing looks appealing, but product doesn’t convert unless you’re already the target customer; collaborations work better than core items. Fendi’s Sarah Jessica Parker ad ranks high due to positive sentiment.
Notable examples
Emma Chamberlain at Burn; Mandy Moore leaving; Burn selfie tagging/privacy issue; Basic-Fit gym in Paris; Fendi baguette bag “Sex and the City” resonance; Dior ad with Josh O’Connor ranking #2; Gwyneth Paltrow dinner/investment positioning via her firm.

1:42Hello and welcome to Fashion People. I'm Lauren Sherman, writer of Puck's Fashion and Beauty Memo Line Sheet, And today with me on the show is Sophia Rivka Rossi, author of Between Friends. We're chatting about summer 2026 fitness trends, the J.Crew Blues, Gwyneth Paltrow's upcoming dinner for Sam Altman, and so much more. Happy Tuesday, everyone. I am extremely tired and have been up for like 24 hours flying. So I am going to keep this short. Enjoy your time with Sophia. I'm in Paris. if you want to hang out, message me. I don't have a lot of childcare this week, but how are we working and reporting?
2:25Please call me. There are people who I was supposed to talk to a while ago that I need to talk to this week. So call me. If you feel like you need to tell me something, I'm available for you. Let's get going.
2:39Sophia Rivka Rossi, welcome back to Fashion People. I feel so honored all my fashion friends are like I don't know how to say this to you but why you and so I am gonna just take that as a compliment from you you're a great foil you have you have opinions I have no no I feel confident in having opinions on things I don't know about but they're just very fashionable and really like admire and are afraid of you just as the vanity fair article said so i love it you know your friends the foster sisters did a um a nordstrom session with like nordstrom employees once and they mentioned me in it and they were like we're kind of afraid of this girl and someone said it to me no erin literally said to me she was like i don't know how to say this to you but like why you like literally everyone is afraid of her in fashion and you're just going on.
3:39And I was like, I don't know. I guess we're friends and we enjoy talking like we was alone. Yeah, they don't have to be. I told them I was I told her I was like, they don't I think it was I texted it to Sarah was like, I saw this. She was like, it's really funny. They don't need to be afraid of me. How do you feel when people say they are afraid of you? Is it a compliment? Is it frustrating? I don't it's interesting I mean it's kind of funny because I'm not like and and I think like Aaron and Sarah I don't think they're actually afraid of me right like they came on here and I didn't um but it's like a funny little I think the thing that that is is hard is like people being skittish around me because I'm like don't be don't be skittish around me be a little afraid of me or like like nervous about stuff but don't be skittish around me because like i'm not like a monster you know what i mean no but i think like thinking of like the devil wears prada you know old image people think like you're the modern day person with strong opinions and i think you're a little withholding which i think is fun thank you thank you well i'm glad you're not afraid of me.
5:00I'm not afraid of you either. Thank you. No one is afraid of me. I'll tell you that. How was your weekend? What did you do? Yesterday, I actually went over to Erin's and she had a barbecue for her birthday. Fun. And then I've been, it was really fun. A lot of little kids playing, a lot of people in cute little cardigans for the evening weather. And then, I don't know, I've been honestly, I was just telling your producer I'm in a heat wave that I'm not trying to complain about but I'm living in Paris in LA I'm living in the Paris of LA my building you don't have air conditioning no I actually don't act like air conditioning in general but I'm this is like next level yeah I've been really wanting to wear my new high sport outfit and I just the weather is not like ready for I got a full set I got my first full set what did you get describe it to the to the listeners okay i got the it's fully red it's like a tank top with a little bit of a poof i don't i don't know but it's very fitting it's a little thick so it's going to really hit and fall but i decided i want this to be my new uniform um i know a uniform you need to have worn it to make it that but i'm deciding it's my uniform i have that top and i think it's really great.
6:22It gives a great shape. Yeah, the shape. I was like, am I a model? Exactly. And I got three pants from Scout. I know you went to Scout before you left and I feel like I won the lottery. Cute. I'm excited to see them. You need to send me a FitPic or post a social. um yeah i i have i done a set i have worn a high sport top a high sport top and pants together but not in the same color oh so i've done like i have a black peplum top that's strapless and i've done that with pink pants well yeah or actually i had dinner with a list of the other night and I got the like, there's this top that Becky Malinsky also has that's the high sport material, but it's kind of loose.
7:18So it's like a more slinky material and it has a little print on it. And it's like a, it's a tank top. And I wore that with, did I wear, you know, and actually I wore old Celine trousers, but I would wear that as a set, but I've never done a color top and bottom, but I think I love red for you. And because we do have pretty similar coloring. Yeah. I don't think of myself as olive either, but I'm so tan right now. I do look olive. And you're tan from LA or your visits in LA. It was a hundred percent from LA because I think so. And this is really bad, even though this isn't technically a beauty podcast, we are going to talk about health and wellness and fitness today because I want to discuss the fitness trends of the summer with you since you're in the trenches.
8:07But I have never been very good about sunblock, which is, I know, extremely bad. And I get checked all the time. I go to the derm at least twice a year. I'm very careful. I'm not saying that makes up for it. But because I am a quarter Armenian, I can get extremely dark. And it means that when I moved to LA, I don't really burn in LA. I don't know what it is, but there's something about the way the light hits where I never got a sunburn the whole time I lived there, but I would tan very easily and I was not great. about putting it on. I now I'm better about putting it on my face, but when you're in the car, you get tan.
9:00That's the other thing. A lot of my tanning was happening in a car. So even if I was, I do wear an SPF on my face always, but on my arms, I don't always. And so, yeah, it just like bounced. The tan just bounced back immediately being there for five weeks. I saw they did the vaccine for melanoma and I was like honestly thank god because I'll like probably need that in the future god forbid but yeah I think I having Moroccan skin a little bit like I think we do need a little bit of sun you know but I you just scared me about the car because you know when you see people drive with the gloves on because they don't want their hands to get some burn I'm like oh that is what is going to happen to me I do not want my hands to look cold everything else yeah yeah i do have like one age spot on my calf muscle and it really stresses me out but um do you know all teens are obsessed with tan lines now like that's what's in is like showing your tan lines and they check the uv hours i was with a bunch of teens this weekend at like a shabbat dinner and they were like the uv is best from 11 to 3 i was like i would never check when the UV is best.
10:12This is a weird thing you're doing. Wow, that's interesting. These are doing weird things. They're even in workout classes. Yeah. Well, this is, okay. So moving on to, I have several questions about our favorite workout class where there are either teenagers or 60 year old women who look like they're 40 burn, but how have you, so we're, I want to talk about burn overall and what your experience is there because you've been going a lot. But also before we even start talking about what burn is, and because we've discussed it on here before. So if people have listened to your episode, they know it, but it's in, so burn is a workout, like a strength training with a little bit of cardio workout class.
10:57That's like of the Tracy Anderson lineage. But it's in a heated room with infrared lights. So I went, I actually went on Friday and Saturday and it was extremely hot. How are you dealing with it? Are you going to burn and also not having air conditioning when it's almost a hundred degrees in LA right now? I am. And I feel like it's the same way, like hot girls eat soup in the summer. You know, like I think maybe we are supposed to keep our temperature is warm. I love burn. I accidentally, when I was going to go meet you, signed up for builds, which was like the straight lifting class. And I have a bone to pick with their policy.
11:40And I'm going to say it here and I hope someone sends it to them. If you are on the wait list of a class there, they don't notify you got in. They ask you to keep refreshing it. And if you don't get in, they charge you a no-show$50. That is crazy. I know they don't make you clean up after yourself, which is a very important thing for me in a workout class. And so I really appreciate that. But I feel like that's an insane cancellation policy. I agree. And I think the challenge with once I went, pre me going to Paris the first trip, I went all the way to burn from Eagle Rock Studio City. We go to the Studio City or at least I go to the Studio City.
12:23I have been to the West Hollywood. It's a little too West Hollywood for me. I prefer the I love the Studio City location, but I went all the way and they were like, our water isn't working. And I was like, you didn't call me first. I live in Eagle Rock. And they were like, we didn't get to you. But but anyway, yeah, I think like the challenge is like I went in the other day. and I was a little late and she was like, we're really not allowing five minutes late anymore. And it's like, there's no parking there. It's really hard to park. This time I only missed one class because I was going to be too late.
12:58The rest of them, I was able to make all of them, but it is, it does take a lot of effort. Um, but yeah, that kind of thing is, is so crazy. They need to, I think they just need to figure all that stuff out because it is such a popular class that there are, you know, they could have five more classes and they would be full. And every time I go now, I see a famous person. Ooh, who have you seen? I see like teen boys who like dab each other up. I'm like, why are you in this class? Like go do a sport. Like I'm very confused. Emma Chamberlain is in it all the time. I saw Mandy Moore leaving one day, who I know and would have said hi to.
13:41But it's a lot of actors who you're like, was that personal on Boy Meets World? And that kind of thing. But it is a phenomenal workout. No, it's the best workout. I had one of the funnier things happen to me. I did the weight class and the instructor was getting us all hype and excited. And at the end, he was like, let's take a selfie together and there were too many hot people in the class I was not feeling hot I was like I do not want to be in the selfie so I like left when the they posted a photo tagged me in it and I was like how did you get my Instagram name like this is feels like that's a privacy issue you should give me a free class if you're tagging me in something but isn't that crazy they like found my account and I'm like and they saw that you're you're an you are an influencer and they wanted you to re-gram.
14:36But they did it for everyone in the class. I was like, but I literally did the thing where I opted out and walked out. Like I didn't know we'd take pictures in this class. My friend Molly has been in that photo also. That must be his thing. Yeah. I'm like, this is crazy. But Silver Springs, another LA workout, very strict on getting in time. I kind of agree. It's bad to be late, but you don't need to charge me extra. Just give it to the other person on the wait list. Yeah, I agree. I understand why they do it, and it makes a lot of sense. But the thing is, so must credit Carolyn Foe, who is in Paris right now, and I would love to go get a drink with her tonight, but I am not going to be able to because I have to unpack all of my crap.
15:25But she is the one who first told me about it. And there is something about this workout class. And I wonder when you look in, I remember my friend Molly, who also goes, who's been in the build photo, being like, were you always a boutique fitness? And I said, yeah, I was like very into bar. Like I went through all the phases of the things. But I think right now I do a lot of Pilates, reformer Pilates. And then there's something about that class that I think it's the infrared lights. And the heat I could give or take, but it doesn't weirdly bother me. I just feel like so strong and so it's the perfect amount of time.
16:15I don't feel like I'm overdoing it. I don't think it's hurting me in any way. It's such an excellent class. And also the instructors are all so nice and so encouraging. Yeah, they're so encouraging. And then you sort of realize like three reps is not a lot, but it's insane in the heat. Sporty and Rich opened up with the former Pilates teacher, a sort of section above the store that It has some classes there, not heated. But I think I need heated. My brain needs extreme temperatures to feel something. Clearly, I live in it. So what is your fitness journey? What kind of workouts did you do before this?
16:58I did Tracy Anderson. I sort of hike. I'm not committed. I mean, I realize now having been on a GLP-1, I'm about to go do that body scan, body spec thing where they tell you you're like body fat. I'm like skinny fat. I think I'm like 80 % fat, like something like that is not. I bet you're not. You have great boobs. So like that's probably a lot of your fat. But I think I really want muscle and I know that it starts now kind of longevity. So I want to do the burn two times a week, the building one, because I was like, it shouldn't be impossible for me to pick up a five pound weight. I literally have been arm wrestling all my friends, little kids like Lauren Casson's son, Quincy.
17:39He's like, hey, I was like arm wrestle me. And he like takes me down. I'm like, this can't be good. I bet you're stronger than you think. I just went to my longevity doctor in on the west side of LA and had my scan. And she was like, you, your legs are so strong. She said my left arm is weaker than, but the arms are hard. Like, it's just like, I don't know how to make them like my arms have muscle and it's defined, but I don't understand unless you are taking eating. I am not going to eat all this protein. Like I just can't do it. It's too much. Is paraphane to protein or not? It's like a joke.
18:22Yes. And interestingly, because there's so much less processed food. Like we got in this afternoon and my husband's tired. We basically been up for 24 hours and it's Monday night. So there's not really want to go out to eat, but you can't really order delivery here. You can, but there's not anything good. You can't order dune. If we got home from LA, we would just order dune or kismet rotisserie. There's nothing like that. So he ordered from, which you've probably been to Cafe Charlotte, that like mediocre steak freak place. He ordered like chicken pie art from there and like went to the grocery store to supplement.
19:14But there isn't, there's just nothing, which is good because then you cook at home more and all that stuff. But the interesting thing is, so at the grocery store, there is way less processed stuff. However, the yogurts, you can get like weird protein yogurts. There's definitely still a focus on protein. It's not as crazy as going to Whole Foods and then being like, here's 35 grams of protein in this thing or whatever. But it's definitely a thing here for sure. There is a focus on, and there's more strength training. The thing I need to figure out here, I have an amazing reformer Pilates place that kicks my ass and it's it's 50 euros a class like it's like yeah which i i of course i wasn't paying attention i was like holy shit this is really expensive but it's a it's proper like it's like better than motivate or i mean motivates good or or um i don't do solid core motivate's great yeah yeah i think motivate and i'm like it's probably closer to the form of Pilates, like that level.
20:29They're very, very good. But I need a strength training class. I also go to this gym to do my individual strength training called Basic Fit, which when I first moved here, it's so funny. When I first moved here, a friend of mine who's a designer was like, I'm going to tell you about Basic Fit, but please don't write about it because I don't want like fashion industry people going. And I accidentally posted a picture of a lock, like a basic lock. And then so many people DM me, everybody goes to this gym. It's like 35 euros a month. It's super clean and really, really nice. And, but I need, I need like, I, what I don't know if they have is a strength training class for girls.
21:17Like, I think they have CrossFit, which I'm not going to do, obviously. And high rocks or whatever. But I need to find out what the like chic, because there's definitely not, there's definitely no burn. And I need, because I definitely, I could see a difference in five weeks in the, in my sort of, I looked more muscular. But what's your motivation? Like, that's my issue is like, I once was hypnotized to like quit smoking and that sort of worked I guess and then one to lose weight and he was like you have to write down Kerry Gaynor like the famous hypnotist in LA you have to write down why you want to do the thing you want and I was like I don't have this like motivation like I always joke like I want someone to be like your cat woman and you have six weeks to like get into shape like how do you I mean I guess endorphins work once you're consistent, but like, what are you, what is your goal?
22:15Just to be hot, strong, live long for your kid? Like, how are you focused? Well, I've always been very, very into exercising. Like even in high school, pardon? You were one of those teens that worked out? Yes. I mean, I was exercising from, I had, do you remember getting shape girl? No. It's that it was fucked up. That was, I mean, I'm I'm 44 I think I'm a couple years older than you but like oh what does he mean was it an online thing no it was like in 1985 like a little girls workout things which is so fucked up my mom was I have to be honest my mom was never like ever like said anything about my body ever that was negative she was always very encouraging which like I think is part of the reason I was fat but like I was like exercising from age five.
23:13I love to exercise. So in the Lindsay Clay trial, they're like, keep talking, talking about her like workouts. And they're like, she does beach body. She does beach body. And I'm like, why are you shaming? That's amazing. But yeah, this was like, because it was Jane Fonda aerobic stuff was very popular. There was like a little girl fake one with like fake weights. And I had that, but I always, I don't, I think here's my thing. Everything I do, I do too much. I am not other than drinking and drugs because drinking and drugs, like I don't want to feel bad the next day, but anything that makes you feel good and doesn't have a residual, like makes you feel bad or depressed, I will do, which is like, like why I'm a workaholic, why I love shopping, why I love to eat, why I love to exercise.
24:11I can, I've run a marathon. Like I could totally do the Ironman thing. I haven't, but I could do it so easily. Like I ran a marathon. I was like, mentally I could run, I could run 72 miles. Like it's not for me, but I will say in the last couple of years, after having a baby, I have gotten in better shape. Like I used to just work out because I was like, I want to be strong and feel good about myself and like be healthy. But after having a baby and my body changed, I did start to want, and now I'm obsessed with like building, like having a butt. So my main priority right now, because prior to that, I was like, I just ran all the time.
25:01And I'd be like, I'm going out to a big dinner. I'm going to run eight miles the next morning to like make up for it. Like that kind of thing. It's like this is 23 minutes in like major eating disorder corner. But I was like, wait, but for a but question, do you think you can actually get a but? You know, those rumors that Kaya Gerber has a BBL. I don't know her. honestly no i but my butt looks way better than it used to but it is i have to do stuff with it like at least four times a week and it's barely there like it's but it but it is you know it is really hard also because like i never had any muscles there and of course i loved running People who don't have butts love running.
25:49Like every exercise I enjoyed was just making my flat butt worse. But so this is why I do tons of Pilates and I do like a lot of squats and stuff. But it requires like I could work on it an hour a week, an hour a day. Which is it's interesting. Tracy Anderson, they like measure you. So are we doing like measurements to know or we're just seeing how it fits in clothes? And also, is a butt fashionable? I feel like it's like cuter to like not have a butt. I don't know. I think a butt is going out of fashion. Yeah, I think you're in fashion. I still want a butt. Okay. I don't want like a huge butt, but I just want – look, I'm at the point now my butt looks good in vintage Levi's, which I'm happy about.
26:48But I would love when I go to work out, I was actually talking about this with Carolyn at burn. I bought skims, Nike skim stuff because I was like, if anything's going to get, it's usually just like a pair of leggings and a t-shirt at burn. I have gotten confident enough to not wear a t-shirt. I just wear the sports bra. So cool. Yeah, I feel good. But I bought the Nike skims in particular because I was like, if anything's going to make my butt look better, it's going to be these. And it gave it a slight lift, but not enough. And Carolyn said that there is some thing that basically has engineered knit below your butt to lift your butt up, workout clothes.
27:39She said, they look almost medical. So they're not. And I'm like, it's not worth it. But I do think if you could engineer to make, if my butt looked good in the workout clothes, I don't think I'd be so obsessed with the working out but i'm like basically going to the workout yeah to get a butt but if you just had a pair of pants that had a little bit of like padding or something maybe you would be i think high sport is great for the butt too so i i agree for that shape because without i don't know i'm not like a non-toxic girly but i'm hearing a lot Aaron and stuff, mostly saying like, we can't be working out and sweating and such toxic materials.
28:29So I don't really know what a good material is. But I think you're right. If anything, it would be like Skims Nike. But if any workout people, athletes are out there, they should give us a little, you know, juicy couture set. Yeah, we're going to try live the process. I doubt that Robin Berkeley is trying to engineer a better butt because her butt looks good naturally. But the other thing I've noticed in the workout classes, and then we should move on to a different subject, but I do want to talk about what you've observed of what people are wearing at burn is there are these, some exercise brands have like, basically they create a thong on the back of the workout legging.
29:14I could not do that but it does make your butt look better i just couldn't but there's like an outline and there is actually i just saw this on social media and there is some sort of controversy around it but there is a favorite daughter legging that is like an 80s where i think it looks really good an 80s workout legging it's like a legging with it looks like you have a leotard on top oh so which will no no i mean well i i like a capri but i was saying the other day that a friend of mine bought a pair of target leggings and cut them into capris and wore them like as fashion and they looked amazing they looked so good they looked amazing with like a kitten heel or something?
30:06Exactly. Finding a therapist is hard enough, but finding one who actually takes your insurance can feel completely impossible. 31:52If I was gonna get my first kitten heel, what would I get? like I think a Manolo Blahnik probably yeah that's what I thought yeah if you're gonna be wearing high sport I feel like I mean you should ask Alyssa I have this Manolo Blahnik mule that Daphne Javits who we talked Rory Sattern and I talked about last last week that she sourced I'll I'll send you can, they don't make it anymore, but Daphne bought it. I saw her at an event. I bought it. Natalie Krinsky bought it. All these other people ended up buying this Manolo that looks great with high sport. But yeah, I think like I would do a Manolo or I would ask, I would ask your friend, Emily Oberg.

32:44I mean, she, I think you could, I think it depends on what your, I think a mule looks really good with a capri pants, but I would say a mule is kind of hard to walk in. So if that's going to be annoying for you, just get a kitten heel and that's also fine. But also this stuff will all look good with high sports as well. Yeah, that's my fall is my Scout jeans and my high sport. It's going to look so good. I do a lot of favor dot or button down. I'm honestly a build-up error. I need people just to tell me what to wear. I don't have any personal style. You know where else you need to go is moth food for jeans.
33:32Because I think you will like, because I love Scout. I bought a couple pairs of jeans there on this trip. And also, what else did I get? Oh, I got this really amazing top there. Jamie Mizrahi, I'm saying this here on this podcast, goes in there and wipes it out for her clients and things. I'm aware, yes. Everyone in the store is just like waiting to be replenished. And it's like all a joke between our friends. They'll be like, oh, has Jamie gone yet? And I'm like, well, I mean, this is too much, you know? Yes. So I don't think she's gotten to moth food yet. I saw her after Burnin. Is it two E's for her?
34:11Two E's for her, maybe, yes. you should go to moth food so i went there and the good thing about moth food is but no jamie was like tell me because i was i said the next time you come to paris you have to come to this shop with me that i go to in the marae and she was like send them to me and i'll have them send me a bunch of stuff i was like you can't take all that stuff too um no i'm happy to send it to her but but moth food the reason i like it for jeans and i just went last week for the first time they have a lot of 505s and I prefer 505s because I think for women, I was talking about it with the salesperson, they're zip up and they're a little higher waist.
34:53And I'm not like, I don't like super high waist. I like a mid waist, but they look better, I think, than 501s most of the time. It's really, really nice. And it's like, that's all you need in LA are those two things. We have on Monday a very interesting thing from this woman, Molly, who runs this account called Style Analytics. And she writes a monthly column for Line Sheet about data. And she basically figured out what the most successful fashion advertising campaigns of the last year have been. and she measured success instead of just measuring like comments and and likes and like chatter around it she also looked at the sentiment around the ad to see if people like them or not because there were some ads that that people like totally shat on and and so she didn't rank those as high as the ones where they were really successful.
36:04And in the end, the ranking is extremely surprising. I was like, wow, this is... And it makes you wonder, do these ads convert? My question for you as someone who is a Build-A-Bear but is interested in fashion, and you know a lot about fashion, in part because you read Line Sheet, do you care about fashion advertising? I think I care more as an adult than I cared when I was younger. I like the beauty of it. I think living in LA, I like when a billboard is good. I think that makes a big difference, especially like going up. So to me, that like the Mew Mew ads, I feel like always when they do the sort of wraparounds, I like love seeing that.
36:51So I care in terms of aesthetic for my city. I don't care in terms of being, I don't get influenced in that way. But yeah, but I would love to know what was the most popular ad or what had the most like impact or sentiment because I thought that was a cool way of saying it. yeah you know it was the Fendi ad with Sarah Jessica Parker which honestly I won't wait sorry I actually mentioned video I didn't know the ad existed but maybe the sentiment has worked because all these younger influencers like Jake Shane and all those people have been redoing the Fendi baguette bag and I never had one I when we talked last time it was all about the Balenciaga bags which I did have and I've been looking on the real world for a good Fendi baguette bag so maybe that ad seeped into me in some way.
37:44But yeah. Do you have a baguette bag or a Fendi bag? No, I never did. It's not for me, but I like it. I'm into it, but it's amazing to me that it is so successful. It just shows that a mix of a great celebrity people love and something that people need right now can hit. So I'm very curious, like LVMH doesn't break out Fendi's numbers, but if they're like, we're seeing great performance, that means it's doing well. Well, it has to be the pricing because the Fendi Mama bag, the baguette one that I've seen a lot of people want to get. It's a good size. I think that's the issue when the Prada sort of small nylon ones came into fashion for like, I guess the teens are the reason.
38:36But like, I love the size of this bag and the colors. I did not know it was Sarah Jessica Parker, but they're all like, people are also rewatching Sex and the City. So maybe that's something too. It's true. It's true. She like, what was the athleisure ad that got people going or beauty? Let me look. I think we only did fashion. There was, it was interesting. It wasn't, It wasn't all the obvious ones. Like the Dior one had a ton of, um, the Dior one did not rank as highly. It did well, but the Dior one with Josh O 'Connor, which obviously we love, it ranked high. Oh, interesting. Okay. It was ranked number two, but she didn't rank it as high because there was like pretty negative conversation underneath it, which is interesting like it it kind of had more so it didn't have as many comments but 15 only 15 were positive so three and three percent negative and then the rest i guess neutral whereas the fendi one 29 were positive and two percent were negative they're cute you know who i bet has them is emily oberg she actually she's only an hermes she is an hermes no she likes louis johnson i mean she actually figured out to get the chanel bag she really wanted she found some connector to do it i'm just like so fascinated by this chanel um i love everyone's like you buy it and has amazing resale value i'm like but you aren't going to resell it.
40:22Sure, it's maybe worth more, but that doesn't really mean anything to you. No, it really doesn't. You just want the bag. Yeah. Do you have anything Chanel? I have a Chanel bag that I bought after I got my first big job when I was the editor of fashionista.com. And I spent$2 ,500 on it. I was making$67 ,000 a year. And I have a black leather like flat bag and it's in lambskin. So it's like very, very nice. And I still have it. I, it's still in LA. I did not bring it on this trip, but I do have a Chanel jacket. So that's what I bought was. Wait, that makes me really happy because I think we're the same.
41:05I have like the flat back, bigger Chanel. I got it at the season finale of producing the Hills. Lauren actually got it for me with one of our producers it's probably the exact same time exact same time and I got it but now my friend Monica Padman who does armchair expert told a story that she was in New York at a department store and she went to ask about the like big flip one that everyone wants it's like eleven thousand dollars and the sales guy was so rude her and said to her, we don't have it, but like, would you even buy it if we had it? And I was like talking to her about it. I'm like, what did he need to see that?
41:46Like you were rich in order to say you had it? Like, is there like an indicator? Cause like, is it like, it's not for Roe? Cause it's so like, I don't know, like, what did he need to know that she'd be able to afford it? And I was like, this very pretty woman. I was like, you go get that bag. Yes. Also, yeah, it's very funny. My husband and I were talking because we had seven suitcases for this trip because we did ship some stuff, but we moved a lot of stuff. And my husband was like, he's thinking about getting the Ramoa extra large carry-on that's sort of illegal. and he was like yeah basically you have to have a sticker on it that says don't you know who i am and i feel like monica padman should have been like who by the way i i should ask her to come on i wonder if she would she might be too scheduled but i was supposed to that she a mutual friend of ours they had a dinner at their house and they invited to i don't know if you were there last week with Sally from Argent, but they had dinner and they were like, come over.
42:58And I couldn't go. But, um, but, and I, because I still haven't met her and I feel like we, I, I really need to meet her, but I feel like she should have been like, don't you know who I am? I'm a famous podcaster that makes a shit ton of money. And like earned her own money and like leave her alone for these Chanel bags. Like I don't, I wasn't, I'm happy for everyone getting their Chanel bags. They seem very cool and great but I I think it's turned like slightly manic um and I think we need to like reel in but that's why I'm like I'll go the Fendi direction I don't need I don't even want to wear my Chanel bag out because I don't want them to be like that's from 2008 you know like not I really see you in jeans from Scout that high sport top a pair of kitten heels and a Fendi baguette Yeah, right?
43:51What else do I need? I think this is your look. Yeah, thank you. Then do I need a blowout? Because I do think having wise hair, you're really killing it with these blowouts. You're like - It's funny because I - You're really making it look great. Every time I go to burn, I think I wish I was like Sophia and that I didn't need, because you have straight hair. And my hair is so coarse and curly. And I do get like a treatment to make it less curly. it's not keratin but it's like it makes it loosens the curl so it's a little easier to get blown out because I still can't blow it out myself but yeah I think having long hair I wore my hair curly this past weekend and I was like it just doesn't look right so when I'm when I have a shorter haircut I kind of do like baby and dirty dancing is the style but when it's long it just looks better blown out but I don't think you need blowout because you have beautiful shiny straight hair.
44:48You don't need one. No, it's so boring. I mean, I want to have I want to see a picture of you with curly hair because I I feel like that was always my dream. I just feel like I have just plain straight hair. You could get a body wave. Yeah, I think just having the blowout is. Yeah, I think the blowout just makes you feel put together. It's very French. I feel like you've taken on this like put together. Thank you. I'm trying. I'm envious of it. So, yeah. So are you official or you like we're here for a year because we have we're very lucky because my husband and kid both have um european passports so i like had to apply for something but it was like easy to make make them move but when you come in october we'll go to david mallet and you can get a blowout with me because that's where i go which is like where all i don't i get my hair colored at a different place at Adrian Coelho.
45:43But I get the blowouts at David Mallett. And I've still been going to Kate in Silver Lake. Kate was on the Emily Sundberg feed me list of hairstylists, right? She's great. Yeah. She's really good. And she does a lot of Eastside comedy people. She definitely does a lot of people you know. She's a great hairstylist. But because my hair so long, I'm going to try to just only get it cut by her if I can. Because I only really need it cut once every three or four months. And I'll probably be in LA. I'll have to next year, but I'll be back in December so I can get it cut when I come. But yeah, we'll get blowouts when you come to Paris in October.
46:26Okay. Well, I wanted to ask you because I think it was from Line Sheet. I kept hearing a little bit about the row not being as popular. And I was like, do you think that that meme where it was like, it's chic to be this, chic to be that. Do you think we've lost the meaning of chic? Like chic maybe doesn't matter anymore? I hate this meme so much, the kind of chic thing. I mean, any word that is used a lot is overused and it loses its meaning. It can be a swear word. It can be like my kid saying the F word and we just are like, we don't even know what to do because it's just funny at least he's not saying because every kid says bro now and i'm like this is unacceptable oh he's been saying pro he's been saying bro it's crazy every kid and girls are saying they're like okay bro and i'm like i am not your bro and all the parents yesterday were like jess graybuff was like i'm losing my mind that this kid is calling me bro.
47:25I was like, I can't. But the kind of chic thing, yes, I find it to be excruciating. And someone else compared it to, what was that thing where it was like your mission or something? It was like your mission, so you choose to accept. It was like supposed to be some female empowering thing that everybody would post. Do you remember this? And then I guess it's sort of connected to what was that like ice bucket thing it's ice bucket challenge it's all kind of the same of the same and kind of chic is like the watered down stupid version of it i hate it it's funny you mentioned the row because i wanted to ask you about j crew as as a more a less um brands obsessed person because we did a big story last week on j crew and kind of it's so cool and the marketing's so cool, but like, is it actually working from a business perspective?
48:23And Malik did the reporting and that Financial Times has also done it. It seems like they are challenged in certain ways. And I was just curious if you ever shop at J.Crew. You know, I love, if you said campaigns, like what works, I feel like whatever, and even whatever event, like I think Chris Black did last year or someone, whenever there's like a J.Crew activation, I like their curation. I like their events. I don't find myself wanting to buy it. I feel like if I'm going to go for that, I would go for The Gap. Yes. I feel like The Gap still gets me. I have a real soft spot for them. But no, I don't think J.Crew to me is very Hilary Kerr.
49:03Like whenever she posts something from J.Crew, I was like, yes, I want that exact thing she says. But I would go to J.Crew and get it all wrong. And I'm like, I'd rather go to Scout for a vintage blazer than find some blazer that I'm not sure about. So every item there that I would think feels semi-exciting as a uniform, I feel like I have a workaround, like a button-down or a cardigan. I feel like I don't need anything from J.Crew and the way that... And I don't really like the sort of collegiate style. I just didn't go to college so that style yeah there's me um oh god like rolling blazers style like like it on other people but i'm like don't ask me where i went to college i didn't and so this is not like this is cosplay for me i i went to college but i went to emerson which is like not real so i'm just kidding i have a degree um yeah i think the challenge with the j crew refresh was that the way that the marketing looks is appealing to people like us but unless you are hillary and like really dedicated to the cause it is not you then you see the product and you're just like i actually don't need this i think where they've done it really right are the collaborations like i bought the mariam nasir like a few things from that and kept them and i'm excited about the akal swata one and i think they've chosen really good people to do collaborations with but um but like product itself it's just so discount driven and that's inevitable.
50:38But I think it's a great example of like, you do all the right things to reposition a brand, but in the end, like people go to brands for what they go to them for. And like, it's very hard to communicate something is better than it used to be when the like when it actually isn't um apologies to everyone i just really like i'm i have someone texting me and just said did you guys just do a 12 hour red eye i was like yes so i am i'm not totally coherent right now because i think you're on all thank you thank you what about made well they just did the rebrand i think it's getting better yeah and i find myself like I think that is pretty like more my lane if I am going to go into anything than J.Crew.
51:27Yeah. And I just think like we are too, we are at this point, I don't want to say too old, but like we don't need, this is the issue with everything in the whole world. Like we don't need to go to these places. We can just go buy vintage stuff. Like I went to LA, I was on a shopping freeze for two months, didn't buy anything, went to LA, it was unfrozen. all I bought were jeans and, and a vintage core. I bought Nicola, just scare Balenciaga corduroys from scout, a top from scout and a bunch of jeans and that, and, and workout clothes. And that's it. And so like J crew and Abercrombie's it's interesting.
52:10Abercrombie CMO that made Abercrombie cool for like all the young TikTokers. She just went to Viori. So like the thing is that's fleeting how much time you have. And also, I don't know, it's just a different world. I best of luck. I think everybody at J.Crew is extremely talented and I like them and I want them to succeed. And I like going to their fun parties, but I think it's just like jaco cannot be as big as it is it's it's a complicated situation it's people are passionate about it though it was it was our best story last week like in terms of engagement and everything because they want it to succeed or they have items there that they do um i think people want it to succeed but i think the thing is like it was basically marketing to us when it should be marketing to people who wear vineyard vines or whatever.
53:04Yeah. Yeah. And so I think it just all kind of got screwed up and we'll see what happens. Best thing that's ever happened to you financially. Go. Easy. Sold my car on Carvana. Amazing offer. Really? I hit 200 on a scratcher. Did the scratcher come to your house and hand you a check? No. How many scratchers did you hit to get that? I hit a button on Carvana.com once. Okay, that's fair. Carlos Ubrey Espinosa is the managing attorney. 2711 Carlisle Boulevard, Northeast Albuquerque. I have one final question for you. And it's not a gotcha because I don't expect you to answer it. but since you're friends with probably every single person invited are you going to the gwyneth paltrow sam altman dinner do you know about this hey no and i'm slightly like offended that i wasn't invited i mean granted i'm not in new york but i'm telling you if this dinner was in la i feel like i should have been i'm actually surprised you weren't either because a lot of you Charles Porch like works at open AI and I um I listen I am a Gwyneth head I love her I will say I didn't love the like fake menu joke thing I was like but it is so her style but I was like I don't really want this from her I want her just to be so low-key that she's like whatever I did what I did.
55:13But I think I saw it on. But I was interested why Matt Bellamy was posting it more than your side of town. I feel like she's more fashion. It was fun because it ended up that I did end up writing about it also because he kept messaging me about it. And I was just like, why do people care about this? Of course she did this. He was like, did you hear about this? or like I read it in his newsletter and then we ended up going back and forth. And it was actually fun because I wrote about it on Thursday and more from like the brand. And I was, I don't know, I don't think I was the first person to publish this, but I figured out how she was an investor in ChatGBT through this little, I don't know if it's little, but this investment firm she has with this person, Moj, who used to run BeautyCon.
56:08So I included that, but I don't that was public knowledge. I don't know but I did it was it was I basically looked at it from a Brand positioning perspective, but I wasn't like the idea that she would do this. It just was crazy And I don't know if matt Realized either but it was just crazy how far it traveled on the internet that people were just like freaking out about this And I was like, what do you expect? Like what I wrote was of course, like Sam Altman is in that whole crew that is adjacent to Gwyneth, like the Barry Diller crew. Like he hangs out with those people in LA. I'm sure he, I mean, Charles works for him.
56:50Like this is all the, all of these people are connected. They're connected to you. They're connected to like all the fun people I write about in LA that some of whom are afraid of me, others who, who are not. But, but the point being like, I don't, what would be weird about her doing this dinner. Okay, but here's my question. I'm saying this in real time thought, so like don't quote me on it. Well, I guess I'm on a podcast, so you have to quote me on it. But I feel like the TPN guys who sold to chat don't get shit and everyone's like how cool it is to be at a TPN dinner. And then she does a dinner for Sam and she's like the devil.
57:28I'm like, is this like sexist in like a way that I don't want to say? I'm just like thrown out. I just thought it was quite weird. And also like, she always has people over to her house. I have been to her house, like the only in the barn, but like, she used to have a holiday part. Yeah. She used to have a holiday party and she would invite people and she would talk to like, she is a very, she's very comfortable with people. And like the, the idea that she would do this, there's nothing about this that surprised me in any way. The only thing that was interesting was how far it went on the internet.
58:05And yes, her jokes afterwards were very funny and it probably, she probably went a little too far with it, but, um, but she is, she is a hilarious character. That is for sure. I think like I could, I write about her from a business perspective and I have my own opinions about that, that we don't need to get in with you because, because this is a brand safe podcast for Sophia. But the thing I would say is like, the thing I would say is like, the one thing about her that you can't, she's in on all of this. Like she is very in on the joke, like no matter what. And so I just thought it was just crazy how much it proliferated.
58:53And I was actually happy because I was going to write about the Mango murders and I had not done any reporting. And I was like, oh, I can write about this kind of thing instead. So thank you. Would you host a dinner for Sam Altman for Puck? Like, is that allowed? Is like, I don't know. Yeah. Like, I don't, I don't know. We, I believe we have AI advertisers. I don't think this is the thing. I don't know. I understand there's like a lot going on in the internet. It's just not my corner of the internet. Agree. You know, like my corner of the internet does not get upset about a lot of the stuff that other corners of the internet get upset about.
59:31And then they get upset about stuff that no one else gets upset about. It's just like, I'm in a very particular, but, but I don't know. I mean, I think like, we need to switch corners. I want to see yours and I want to see mine because my corner. Mine is so easy. Not much, not much, just lots of shopping, but it's not, there's not a lot of, I don't get I get a lot of DMS but not like every once in a while like a real evil thing but usually not I don't know wait what was the response to the fair um profile it was good it was I feel like um you know I'm the thing that I've said to other it's like when you and you I'm sure you feel this way too because you're a writer and you're also like a behind the scenes person who is connected to a lot of these like people who are not behind the scenes when you were the one getting attention like I know part of my job is like being public and I'm very flattered and like I also appreciate the recognition or whatever it's still weird to like be be the subject and I thought Aiden did a an awesome job.
1:00:47But it's been great. I don't know. I'm like, how many people that I know who actually read it? I don't know if there was a big profile of another fashion journalist. I don't know if I would read it. I probably would. I thought it was so smart to do it in Vanity Fair. I think it would be different in Vogue or New York Times. I'm like, do you think I would love the New York Times profile you down the line, but I love this as your soft launch. Thank you. No, I also think I write a lot about Mark and I'm critical of Mark. And I think he understands the game that we're both playing. And also, we're, I mean, he's younger than me, but we're peers and we're generational peers.
1:01:38And like, we're going to be, I'm not going to stop and he's not going to stop. And so how do we kind of play together? And I thought it was smart of him to do it. You think he invites us to the Oscars after party this year? I'm putting it out there to go. I would love to go. I don't know if that's a Conde Nast thing. But if I'm in town, I would love to be there. It would be super fun. Did you go? No, there's two parties. I don't really care about parties like being from LA. I feel like I get weirdly jaded. That's not my thing. Like other people go, I'm not invited. But there's two places that I'm like, I actually think sounds really fun.
1:02:16The Vanity Fair, I've been before with Zoe when it was really big, just not my old business partner. But I'd love to go to the Academy Gala. I don't know why. That one. Oh, you know, I've been to that. How is, can you, it's really fun. I want to go. I feel like I haven't, I haven't stayed at a table. I've just gone to the cocktails, but it's really fun. And the LACMA is really fun for the cocktails too.
1:02:43LACMA, this year, I think I was invited to stay for dinner and I couldn't because it was my good friend. It was Hannah Fidel, who you probably know, her 40th birthday. And so I could not stay. And I think that was the first year I was invited to stay for the dinner part, which I think would be cool because they honor a director usually and an artist. so it's interesting but um yeah I think both of those things are really fun and they're fun to dress up I also always have fun at the W magazine parties they're really really really fun yeah but that feels a little too much like my peers and so it's okay that I'm not invited because I feel like I want to be somewhere where I'm like observing but wait have you gone to Geffen speaking of Blackmon.
1:03:28Have you gone to the new Geffen while you were here? Yes. I went. I went when I was, I, it's funny. I wanted to take Fritz, my kid, but we did not end up going. Um, I went when I came back for that Hermes show in June and I walked around. I love, I love the gallery is incredible. I think that the collection, it's not my favorite and I don't like the way it's, it's laid out and i've talked to enough people who are way smarter than me about art about it the collection does is like there's no wow pieces and i literally just stole that from someone but like several different kinds of people connected to the art world who feel the same way i think they just don't have as strong of a collection as mocha or whatever and so which I am again copying from like four or five people who are in this world who have told me this.
1:04:28I personally, when I walked through, I was like, this space is amazing. It is incredible. It is so great for Los Angeles. Like I could transform Los Angeles. I was sad. I didn't come for Dior, like to see Dior in there would have been amazing. I wish that there was more art in the space that I felt emotionally connected to. Like even, you know, when you go to the Broad, even though the art is extremely basic, like you're just like, this is basically like opening art 101 book. There's something affecting about it anyway, especially when you go with a kid. Cause you're like, look at this amazing, this is what art is.
1:05:11Right. Like it's amazing or whatever. Or if you go to, I went to the, big, there's a really, the Duchamp exhibit at MoMA when I was in New York last time, which is incredible. It's incredible. It's incredible. I just think there's just too much going on and there were no pieces where I was like, so excited to see it. So that is my complaint is like, I hope that they figure that part of it out but like it is amazing and I was blown away by it and I you know I'm I'm a I'm a member of LACMA and I always will be it's it's very important how do you feel about it as a as a native Angelina well I feel a few things one I'm very proud to be a member as well our friend Alyssa Zachary gave me a membership I thought that was so cool um so nice took me as like an early what a great gift like that is such a like I hate to say chic I won't say chic but that is such a tasteful like yeah like come with me to the studio I'll also make you a member I was like that is a really cool move I want to do that for someone else so I love the building I agree with you I had heard that they had made the collection based on bodies of water and I like didn't really know what that meant when I got there I think the building is so beautiful the crossover between Wilshire makes me like takes my breath away that this could be building in LA I the only gun to my head piece of art I know is that big Matisse and it's not even Matisse's best um so I agree with you I think the idea is that you to me I can compare it to it feels like maybe someone else had this too but like the grove where like I feel like a mall walker it's like it's so hot now a few times I've been like should I just go walk around LACMA and get some steps in and get some ac like not even for the art like sure art will be around so i agree i think some more um curation you couldn't tell me if you were a kid i don't know what you would take away from that like you would just be running around and see tapestry i don't know that you'd be like this is the collection of east asia like there's just so not curated for curiosity but perhaps it just yeah Yeah, it feels like it's like every it's like this is everything we have.
1:07:30Whereas when you go to the I mean, it's like very different. And if you talk to someone in our world, they'll be like the Broad is like so basic or whatever. But like you take your you take your kids to the Broad and your Fritz is just like, oh, my God, Basquiat, blah, blah, blah. You know, like he knows he loves Basquiat and he like he can identify. Yes, because we like bottom. I took him to when that traveling Basquiat exhibit when he was really little, and then we bought him some books. And so he just knows it. He'll be like, that's a Basquiat t-shirt or whatever. I mean, that's the interesting thing of something being so sort of their estate, letting it go so much that he knows it really well.
1:08:16But I don't know. Yeah, it's interesting, but it will evolve. and it is an amazing, it's an amazing building. Like it's crazy. Well, you didn't do the art room at Wackma for kids. I heard that's pretty cool. You know, we didn't, we'll go over Christmas. I feel really bad we didn't go. It was like a priority for me, but I did go to, I saw the Urs Fischer at Jeffrey Deitch. And then I also went to Reagan Projects, had this really amazing show that I wanted to take him to, but I had to go on a Saturday. I can't remember, it's over. So, but if you want to look it up, it was a great show. And I went to night gallery, had a group show that was awesome that I think might still be happening.
1:08:56There's a lot of great, there's amazing art in LA. It's, it's a special place. When you come into Paris in October, what's the main big thing you want to do? I just, I think it'll be my birthday and I want to just be around cool, interesting people that like aren't my best friends in a fun way like i want to just be like go meet your friends or like my friend think for that is there for white lotus so i'm curious we can go visit i want to see what's going on there i just like i i want to ask someone who speaks french i kind of feel like safe when french is around i just want to be around a different culture that's not like so american that's like new york was great well yeah we'll go to a wine bar and we'll hang out with French people.
1:09:41Yeah, let's just be American expats, you know? I can't wait. Sophia, thank you for joining me on Fashion People. This was a pleasure. You are the best.
