Key claims about Office Romance
The title is generic and the plot is “absurd” and “idiotic nonsense,” but the movie has “juice,” real jokes, and strong performances. It’s formulaic yet occasionally self-aware and surprisingly funny. It’s not suitable for teens or airplane viewing due to graphic sexual/erotic visual jokes.
Notable examples
Jennifer Lopez plays a no-nonsense CEO; Brett Goldstein plays her British legal advisor. Supporting cast includes Betty Gilpin, Tony Hale (HR director with a running camera gag), Bradley Whitford, Amy Sedaris, Jodie Whittaker, Roger Bart, and Mary Wiseman. The hosts cite a recurring HR-related gag, a Holland Tunnel joke, and an end-of-film graphic childbirth/“hairy baby” visual gag.

2:55Jennifer Lopez is a no-nonsense CEO and Brett Goldstein is her buttoned-up British legal advisor. Sounds like a recipe for an office romance, which is now on Netflix. I'm Jordan Hoffman. And I'm Matt Singer. With more movies, more series, more stuff going straight to streaming than ever before, it felt like the right time for a podcast that keeps track of it all, and that podcast is Film Spotting Streaming Video Unit. This week, we've got a review of Office Romance, plus this week's new-to-streaming titles, some deep-cut streaming recommendations, and a new game. New? It's new! Exclamation point!
3:39No, it's new! It's all coming up on Film Spotting SVU.
3:49welcome to film spotting svu the streaming video unit i'm jordan hoffman and we will be discussing office romance which is a big hit on the big red one netflix later in the show we're going to talk about some streaming recommendations plus listener request recommendations this happens in our recommendation segment, also known as the Rec Seg. And one other thing we're going to do for the Rec Seg this week is because if listeners are out there listening on a tight schedule, if they don't let it linger in their to listen to box for weeks and weeks and weeks, the Film Spotting Festival is happening in Chicago and there might be people flying to Film Spotting Fest.
4:36So we thought of, we would think of some relatively short movies that are downloadable for a laptop and good to watch on a short flight to Chicago because all flights to Chicago are short because it's in the middle of the country. Everybody can get there easily, right? That's why Chicago exists. The second city. It's not the first city. The windy city. The wind, well - The second windy city. That's right. That's right. So anyhow, that's what we're going to talk about. And it's exciting. But before we get to that, a little bit, Matt Singer, of Office Romance. Daniel, you need to be in Miss Cruz's office in five minutes.
5:12Have you met Miss Cruz? She's tough. She hates the sound of breathing. Don't breathe. But if you have to, try to take a quick gasp through the side of your mouth like this.
5:22He wanted to see me.
5:27Holy shit. You're the new lawyer? I am he, Daniel Lunchflower. All right. That is the trailer to Office Romance. I do want to bring up one thing. Because we do talk about streaming. We're the streaming video unit. And I just read an article today in The Hollywood Reporter about the streaming industry and the money that's being made. Right. And I got to just lay it all out. We're all adults here. This was an article about a site, which I've never been to, called OnlyFans. Uh-huh. $5 billion market capitalization. Hamana, hamana. Now, I just want to ask a question to the listeners who can write to us at feedback at filmspottingsvu.com.
6:18They can write back under, like they could send their email in a plain brown wrapper if they want. You know, they can use a fake name if they choose to. While wearing a raincoat. Who spends money on porno? There's so much free pornography out there. Why would you spend? I don't understand how this industry exists. I'm not going to fib and say I don't understand the allure of looking at people in states of undress performing acts of intimacy. In fact, we're going to discuss that in Office Romance. That's true. You're not a prude. I'm not a prude. I'm the man of the world. I understand the oldest profession.
6:58I do understand the occasional desire to look at these things on your computer, but to spend money when it's free, I just don't get it. How much better is OnlyFans than the free stuff? I would ask Sam and Matt, but you two are also both upstanding, righteous gentlemen who have never in their lives been to this website. Of course. No, I genuinely, I've never been to, I know what it is. I've never, I've never, I've never perused OnlyFans. But I mean, Jordan, the argument you're putting in favor of is not supporting the content creators you love. This is like me saying, well, no, but I'm just saying, this is like if you were like, oh, I don't need to buy the album.
7:35I'm just going to look on Napster. You know, like. Well, I guess. You got to support the artists you love, Jordan. Is that really the answer? Is that. I don't know. That's my. That's what I. That's my. I'm playing. I'm playing devil's advocate. I don't know. I mean, all I know is that I'm a happily married man who would never. But all I know is that it's embarrassing enough to look at pornography on your computer, let alone to spend money on it. I just don't. Five billion dollars. You know what it means? You're making this argument. How do you know that in six months we're not going to have an OnlyFans?
8:08Well, that's just the thing. I mean, the economy right now is rough. And there is a desire to see film critics debate movies in the buff. Yeah. I think you and I. Suddenly the market capitalization will go up to$6 billion. I'm just saying there's more than a thumbs up and down if you want to talk about movies. Oh, no. Heavens to Betsy. Oh, my God. I can't take any more. Please, let's start the review. Let's talk about a movie called Office Romance, which also is a little blue, so it's appropriate that I talk about this topic today. Now, Netflix, the big red one, is home to a special kind of generic movie you honestly can't remember if you already saw or not.
8:50which one is extraction and which one is the gray man did i see red notice or heart of stone what separates project power from the atom project and so on and so on sometimes that no frills attitude is right there in the title behold murder mystery and murder mystery 2 two actual movies found on netflix and i thought that was what i was going to get with office romance and on one level i guess i kind of did this is a little bit of a generic story but as if by some miracle at some point before production began someone or a group of someones said wait wait wait hold up let's at least try here now is the result is the result what an idea what a concept let's try try well they didn't do that on the atom project or project power or heart of stone if you saw those pieces of garbage now is this resulting in a masterpiece of a motion picture no this frothy shallow far-fetched little movie starring jennifer lopez and brett goldstein falling in love among the cubicles and boardrooms is formulaic idiotic nonsense but but there is a second coat of paint the script does have a glaze a polish a veneer of actual jokes in there there There are tiny zings.
10:10There's character-based shtick. There's wordplay. There's a recurring gag or two. And there's also a healthy dose of shock jokes involving tumescent male sex organs, errant ejaculates, and dilated and stretched vulva. Oh, boy. I'm just reporting on what's in the movie. I'll tell you when you're telling lies. So far, it's all accurate. Moreover, the performances have some oomph. They're supporting players like Betty Gilpin, Tony Hale, Bradley Whitford, Amy Sedaris, Jodie Whittaker, and they are all reliably funny, especially Betty Gilpin. But also, Brett Goldstein and, dare I say, Jennifer Lopez come in with some quality comic timing when needed.
10:52More importantly, Goldstein, who co-wrote the screenplay, and J-Lo are hardcore Hollywood hot, appearing in various states of undress in luxurious settings, to which we say, bravo! A-Woo-ga! Exactly. Exactly. Office Romance has one of the dumbest plots imaginable, rife with business, legal, and media moments where you just want to shout back, on what planet is this movie set? But it is fast and silly and just a touch blue, so much so that one should be warned that perhaps this is not the Princess Diaries and you don't want to watch this with your teenage kids or anything like that. But I cannot say the experience was entirely unpleasant.
11:32I laughed quite a bit. What about you, Matt Singer? I think we are in this week. We're in pretty much total agreement here. It's an impossibly generic title. It is. It sounds like something that was generated by an algorithm. But the movie itself, it's got a little juice. It's got a little life. It has it has two very appealing stars. it has some real jokes it has an outstanding supporting cast they got a lot of good actors in here it's not like it's the Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein show and then everybody else is like a mid-level improviser from the UCB that they kind of pulled off the street or pulled off the UCB stage and was like, we've got you for scale everybody in this movie is a name and you mentioned Betty Gilpin is great Tony Hale has a He steals every scene he's in.
12:26He has a wonderful running gag involving. He's like the HR director, which in a movie about an office romance is kind of an important part. He has some incredible just takes to camera where he just looks so upset by what he's witnessing because, you know, this is a story about two co-workers or a boss and an underling who fall madly in love. And he is the one who's ultimately sort of responsible for adjudicating the rules of such an entanglement in the office. And he is just not happy about any of it. And there's also he has a wonderful scene that he anchors that's in the credits. Don't turn it off right away.
13:07Wait, I missed that. What? I got to go back. No, as soon as the credits hit, I turned the machine off. You literally must have turned it off very quickly because it's not that deep into the credits that he has this very long scene while the credits are rolling. I got to go back. I had to use the bathroom. Well, now you can go back and you can go watch it. I can juke the algorithm. Netflix will think I watched it twice and that's – And as you mentioned, it is not for consumption with the whole family. You mentioned later we're going to recommend movies that people can watch on a plane, which I think is a very – actually, it's a great valuable resource for people because that is a genre of movie unto itself.
13:46do not watch this movie on a plane there are some very there's some graphic visual jokes of an erotic nature that I think if you're sitting next to someone you don't know it could be a little uncomfortable if you're seated on a row of nuns and then it's you that's exactly what I was imagining or the little girl from Airplane I'm imagining all the characters from Airplane if Ted Stryker is next to you watching this he's going to start sweating profusely but yeah it's a pleasant time it is not the plot is absurd there's also some other supporting guy Edward James almost blazes in and I love him and he only gets like two scenes and the first scene he's very funny and the second scene is annoying because the movie tries and I'll get into the plot in a minute but the movie tries to be about something other than just jokes and when it tries to be a real movie it kind of fails and there's like a thing like ten minutes before the end a scene with Edward James almost and they're yelling at each other.
14:47Jennifer Lopez, he plays her father and they're yelling at each other. I'm like, am I supposed to know that you have these feelings? Like what movie was this in? And I do believe that there was an other cut because there's another character. Michelle Hurd is in the movie and she's not a superstar, but she's enough of a character actress that like all of her scenes had to have been cut because she's just in the background a couple of times getting one line. It's like, what was Michelle Hurd's character in the first draft? It's funny. Michelle Hurt is in it. Well, there's so many people in this that are great.
15:19Mary Wiseman is in it. Two people from the lesser Star Trek series of recent times. Okay. Take a shot, those of you in the audience. The SVU drinking game when Jordan mentions an alumni from Star Trek. Yeah, Rafi from Star Trek Picard and Mary Wiseman who plays Tilly. And she's basically playing Tilly here on Discovery. And, you know, she's the most annoying character in the galaxy. And she's doing her same shtick again. I mean, even like there's I loved seeing Roger Bart, who is mostly a theater actor. I kind of know him from doing all kinds of stuff on Broadway. I think he was recently like Doc Brown in Back to the Future, the musical, I believe.
15:57Right. Yeah. And here he is like the CEO of a competing airline because Jennifer Lopez is the kind of plucky. It's sort of a funny character. She's both like a Nepo baby and an incredibly skilled, successful. Yeah, bootstrappy. Yeah, bootstrappy, under-respected, under-appreciated CEO of her own company, this kind of independent, small, but growing airline. And Roger Bart is the CEO of the competition. And he has a couple of really great scenes that are almost, they feel like something out of a 60s comedy. He could have been played by Charles Nelson Reilly or something. It's just a lot of stammering and sweating and looking nervous.
16:37and just very, but he plays it perfectly and he's very charming. And there is that kind of sweet, innocent side to this movie, even though it also has jokes about, what was the word you used to describe? Errant ejaculates? No, I think it was the one about the, you were describing a certain member. Yes, a male body, a tumescent male organ. Thank you, tumescent, yes. Well, there's so much tumescence, there's also kind of a sweetness here. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what's funny is that, So the airline that she runs and he is the - Air Cruise. Air Cruise, C-R-U-Z. And he is a new addition to the legal team.
17:15Straight over from Britain. Brett Goldstein we're talking about here. Yes. And they fall in love. He's like the chief legal officer or whatever. Right, right. Because he was just hired. He's a new hire. But their usual chief got in a weird burrito eating accident. That's played by Bradley Whitford. Very strange subplot. Bradley Whitford. He's very funny. So what's funny is, so it's supposed to be like this scrappy underdog company, but they have like zillion dollar offices. Yeah, the most beautiful offices in the world. Glass everywhere. And her home is very luxurious, but they're supposed to be these underdogs.
17:45And then the other funny thing is like it's all building to the bad guys. You know, they're called Falcon Airways or the bad guys. Roger Bart's company. They're going to buy them out and there's a lawsuit. And so it's all held. They're fighting over gates at an airport in Texas. And it's nonsense. The big ending is supposed to be like a shareholders meeting, which maybe shareholders meetings are broadcast on CNBC or Financial News Network or something. But they make it sound like Disclosure Day. Like everybody in the world is watching in, is tuning in to watch a tiny little airline, like a sub spirit airline is about to get bought by United or American.
18:27Would you watch that on the news? No. But everybody in America is glued to their TV to watch J-Lo tell Roger Barr to go to hell and Brett Goldstein to show up like at the end of The Graduate and shout Elaine, Elaine. to come out and be like... It is an example of how this movie does not take place on planet Earth. But the thing is, it's clever enough that I think they knew that. Like, they knew while they were making it. It is a little... It's a self-aware film. They're aware of how stupid it is. And there's a lot of funny jokes. There's some funny, like, kind of esoteric jokes. There's a very funny joke about the Holland Tunnel in New York City, which if you don't live in the New York, New Jersey area, you may not get.
19:06Right. And then there's just, like, recurring gags. The Bradley Whitford recurring gag is very funny. And then there's, I think, Benny Gilpin as the Smithers. Yeah, Brett Goldstein is a funny guy. He's the star here, but he also is the co-writer. He's written other shows. I watched Ted Lasso. He's great on Ted Lasso. And he's a stand-up. He does stand-up comedy as well. He's clearly a funny, he's not just like a charming and handsome presence. He's a witty, funny guy. Yeah. And I think I think we got to give him a fair amount of the credit about when we're saying like, why is this more interesting and less generic than the title suggests?
19:48He put a little care into it. Yes. Yes. You can almost you feel like, OK, somebody who really wanted this to be good put a lot of effort in. And I wouldn't be surprised. I don't know this. But this is my question was, was his original script for this? Did it have a fun title, an interesting title? Oh, yeah. And Netflix was like, that's not what our algorithm wants. I wouldn't be surprised. office romance you know that's a really good question i bet you want to know why why why even bother with why not just call it rom-com like why if we have murder mystery right like why hasn't netflix done that yet don't you think they will eventually like let's not even like that's even more generic why do i even beat around the bush just rom-com no fooling around at the office never at the office if we got caught it could destroy everything i've built

That's a good question. I was wondering that too. I don't know. I mean, she's very good in this part. I mean, she really is at this point. She's kind of like rom-com royalty. Obviously, she's done other things, but she does a lot of romantic comedies and she is good in these kind of movies. A couple of years ago, she was in, I think it was called Marry Me, was another streaming, direct-to-streaming rom-com. I think that one was on Peacock and the guy in that one was Owen Wilson.
23:52and I watched that one with my wife. And again, the plot is deranged and, you know, but she's got, you know, she's beautiful. She's got charisma. She has charisma. She has presence. She's very likable. And you just enjoy watching her fall in love with whoever she winds up falling. I always enjoy watching her fall in love with someone on screen. And she's done it so many times. You do root for her. Who is she married to in real life right now? Is she and Beneflect back together? They just call him Ben Affleck? Ben Affleck? How do you pronounce his name? Affleck. I think he pronounces it Affleck, though.
24:30What? Doesn't he? I've heard Affleck. Bella Affleck and the Affleck tones? Bella Affleck and Affleck tones. I don't know. Are they together again? They keep going in and out of romance. They were together, but I thought they, didn't they break up again? I don't know. Who can keep track? We need to get former SVU host Allison Wilmore in here, because she is the foremost expert on Ben Affleck and his paparazzi photos. She's not married. Oh, they were divorced. They were married and divorced, but they recently got back together, but they divorced two years ago. Yes. J-Lo and Ben. Yes. That's a Shonda.
25:01All right. Well, what can I say? Can we talk about, I would just love to hear your response to one other thing before we move on. Yes. What was your reaction to, and this is sort of spoiling something, I suppose, but towards the end of the movie, now we mentioned Betty Gilpin being very funny in this movie. She kills it. Her character is such a, you know, like this movie is about, if it is about anything, and it is trying, I guess at times. It is to some degree about workaholics and the balance between work life and home life. And when you are a workaholic, what are you supposed to do if you get the hots for someone who you work with when your workplace is, you know, it's a verboten, no tolerance, zero tolerance policy?

25:44They make it very clear that at Cruise Airlines, you will be fired. Right. So much is bat your eye. Even the CEO, if you bat your eye at another co-worker, you're out. And so the Betty Gilpin character is kind of like a grace note onto that. She is a workaholic. She works even harder than Jennifer Lopez, if that's possible. And she's also like, she seems to be like 10 and a half months pregnant for the entire movie, as long as the movie exists. Like, she looks like she's ready to go into labor any second. And then at the end of the movie, she does. It's very funny. In the office, and they go the full, like, knocked up where they don't just, it's not just like, you know, close-ups of her screaming face.
26:22There are graphic shots of the crowning head of a hairy baby. And that is even a joke, that the baby's head is hairy. I think I have to look now. Do I have your consent to look? Stop being so f***ing British. Okay, then. Well, now I'm going to be looking. Are you ready? I am looking now. Oh, dear. The head is there. I'm looking at a head. Way more hair than I was expecting on the baby. I did not know this was coming. No. And I would love to know your reaction to this. Me? Yeah. Did you expect that? No, of course not. The camera went where the camera was not supposed to go. And I went, wow, what a picture.
27:04You know, I wasn't expecting it. And then you get the reaction shot of Brett Goldstein going, holy smokes. It's very funny. And then J-Lo gives a reaction shot, too. It's very good. This just in from producer Sam, despite how placeholder-esque and incredibly generic the title Office Romance sounds, that was actually the working title from day one. Okay. When Brett Goldstein and his co-writer Joe Kelly pitched and wrote the script. Then we have to give kudos to him for being smart enough. For knowing Netflix. He has like, yeah. He had played three-dimensional. He entered the Netflix parade. He played three-dimensional chess.
27:36He's like, I'll get them. Yep. Pretty good. Wait till you hear what this one's called. Now, let me ask you a question. and maybe Sam wants to chime into it here. In my life, in my life, I have not really worked at an office all that much, both for better and for worse. Part of me wishes I had. A very few of my years were spent in an actual job with an office. Only two little stints, one for like three and a half, one like five years and one like two and a half years. And that's it. So in those times, I was younger and I was working in media, which is not a professional. It's not like banking or something like that.
28:20Insurance is a little bit more flamboyant. And in New York City and with a lot of young people, 20s and 30s, because I was in my 20s and 30s when I had these two stints. The point I'm making is this. During those two stints, nonstop office romances among my entire cohort. He's stooping her. She's stooping him. He's stooping him. She's stooping her. Everybody's stooping everybody. Some of them are married. One couple were married, working together, both having affairs with other people. And everybody knew, but nobody said anything. One time at the office, this one person was stooping the boss. Everybody knew it.
29:01Everybody knew it. Nobody said anything. One time, a guy actually said something, made a crack about her stooping the boss. She took him to HR. He got in trouble for insinuating it. but then both she and the boss left the company and went public with their affair that everybody knew they were having so he was right even though he said something uncouth i'm curious i don't know how much you've worked in offices i mean you currently do work you should you should specify you were working at the time for onlyfans.com correct and i should also point out none of this was going on with me and one of these stints i was single and what i've liked to it if it's been happening to me, but I was like living out of this movie.
29:44I said, I will not engage in anything untoward with my fellow co-workers and never got any interaction. But nevertheless, I'm curious, in your life, because you've worked in the New York City area in media, is it like that for you? Did you witness this as well? No. Maybe I was Pollyanna-ish about this, but not that I observe. No, I mean, I haven't worked in an office for a while now, but I have never witnessed so much. I mean, you just used the word schtupping, I think, more in one long monologue than has been used by any human being in the last 30, 40 years. Nothing that I, I guess maybe it was just being, it was happening more discreetly.
30:25Maybe it was more discreetly. Sam, can you nod, have you worked in offices where there's been liaisons happening nonstop? Dangerous liaisons, perhaps? No, I've worked in offices. It's been almost 20 years since I worked in an office. My career path is very much like yours. I felt like it was probably happening at the real estate investment company that I worked at. The ship capital of - Yeah, stuff capital. But yeah, I was not involved enough. Well, I worked for New York Media and everybody was hotsy-totsy. And the first company I worked for, this was in the 90s and early aughts, pre-9-11. Part of the deal was, and we were all very young, every Thursday night we went out on the company dime to a different bar and got loaded.
31:11I mean, it was like - Oh, wow. Well, maybe that had something to do with it. I did. Every Friday morning it would be like, who's got the juice? What happened? And all the regrets, she went home with him, he went home with him, everybody went home with everybody, and I went home sad by myself all the time. All right. Well, to recap, if you're drinking along with us at home, we're only 25 minutes in. Jordan's already told a long anecdote and mentioned Star Trek. That's right. We're done for the day. You're as loaded as Jordan's old coworkers were. Exactly. All right. Actually, I did want to say before we before we move on to some recommendations, I had a thought watching this film, which was because we have been really positive about a movie that's like a six out of 10, you know.
31:54Yeah. And that was this was, you know, and this movie is shot by a fairly good cinematographer. Robert Yeoman is the cinematographer of this movie. He's like, you know, for years and years was Wes Anderson's guy, you know, shot a lot of Noah Baumbach's guy at times. You know, he's shot. You look at the list of movies this man has shot. He's shot a lot of great movies. And he does a lot of comedies. He did Bridesmaids. I just, I had a thought. The movie doesn't look bad. No. But there's nothing other than the beautiful people in this movie. There's not much to look at. Well, with the exception.
32:30Let me finish my point. Let me finish my point. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And we have discussed on this podcast that people, like Netflix, almost seems to assume that their audience is watching distractedly. They're looking at their phones. They need explanations of what's going on. It's just like the visuals are almost unimportant, and that's reflected in a lot of their films. But if we have anyone making something for Netflix out there, I'd like to propose something. If nobody's watching, go crazy. Do something bold. No one's going to notice except us, who are actually looking at the screen. give us something to look at you know like go wild there if they're busy looking at their phones they're going to miss it anyway and they're not going to be able to complain you raise a good point i mean this guy won the audience that that's you know if no one's looking you have no excuse not to experiment give us a little visual excitement the guy certainly does have you know he could do something more appealing there are a few visual moments it's when they go on work vacation to the dominican republic and they go to this fancy bar and they go on the beach and they go to a little alcove in very uh it's a great alcove yes it's a nice bathing suit um but you're right like there are some establishing shots of like now they're in the dr and it's like all but it's kind of second unit it could be for a tv commercial from from the tourist bureau it's not a distinctive thing from an academy award-winning cinematographer i feel like robert yeoman took this gig because he's friends with the director yes he made parker mama mia here we go again yeah and so it was like together he's like hey you want to do it again it's going to be quick most of it's going to be in a soundstage with j-lo and a lot of funny people and then we're going to maybe do i mean you know they probably didn't even go to the dr i bet you all that stuff was second unit and then when they're in that restaurant they're back in a soundstage in in brooklyn somewhere who knows if they did go it doesn't really look like it let's put it no and that's what i'm saying like come on we can i'm throwing down the gauntlet here we're Like for those of us who are watching, give us something to really look at.
34:38Yeah. So this is, yes. I mean, for the streaming video unit, this is a fun movie and it exceeded our expectations, but it's certainly not great. It's not Lawrence of Arabia in terms of visuals. No, it is not. But it's not bad. Yeah. Just don't watch it on an airplane next to some nuns. I think that's the big takeaway. So the film is Office Romance. It is streaming on Netflix. Good day, Jackie. Ms. Cruz. Jackie's fine. Everybody calls me Jackie. Bye, Jackie. Bye, Jackie. Bye, Jackie. I've never called her Jackie before. All right. Office Romance. We've romanced it up. It was not a one-night stand.
35:18It was at least two nights. Now is the time on recommendation segment when we recommend some movies related to the film. Matt Singer, you just saw Office Romance. Yes, I did. What did it remind you of and what would you like to recommend to our listeners? Well, for my pick this week, I went with the theme of romantic comedy and I got even more specific than that. I decided, can I think of another romantic comedy in an office setting? Oh. Can I think of another movie that could have been called Office Romance? Another Office Romance. Wasn't Bridget Jones's Diary didn't have offices in that? There were like five of those movies.
36:02One of them had to be in an office. Sure. I'm going to go with sure. But that's not what I'm recommending here. Oh, let me think. I don't know. Okay. Well, I'm going to tell you. The one that came to mind that's widely available on multiple streaming sites is the movie version of, let's see if maybe Jordan can get it with these clues, of a beloved Broadway musical. Broadway musical? Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. No. Broadway musical. I don't know yet. I don't know. Oh, wait. How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying? which is available on Amazon Prime, Tubi, Canopy, and Hoopla. This book is all that I need.
36:41How to, how to succeed. The only motion picture that guarantees you a better position. It was filmed in 1967 with several members of the original Broadway cast of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. and it combines, speaking of shooting a movie on a soundstage in New Jersey, it combines these really beautiful modernist 1960s office sets with actual footage of New York City of the late 1960s. Definitely not a green screen, definitely not the volume. They have Robert Morse, the star. He's dancing around, walking down the street, and they're like filming him with a hidden camera, and people are looking at him funny.
37:26It's fantastic. You get to see what the city looked like at the time. It has a little bit of a documentary quality to that. If you've never seen the film or the show, it is about an ambitious young window washer played by Robert Morse, who you might know now in more recent times, he kind of winked back at this character by playing the boss on Mad Men, which is set in the same milieu at the same time. If you are a madman, madman, madman fan and haven't seen this movie, if you're a madman fan and haven't seen this movie, it's a criminal act. You will love this movie in ways that I could never describe it.
38:05You must see it. So and but of course, this is now what this was 40 years earlier in this. He's the guy on the bottom of the of the ladder. He's the young window washer. And he's he's got this book, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, which was like a comical book that existed. It was published. And then the show was adapted from that. And he's reading the book to try to climb the corporate ladder at the Worldwide Wickets Company. And he also falls for the beautiful secretary at the company named Rosemary. And of course, you know, there's no HR department in this film, though, let's say.
38:38And look, the material very obviously dated now as evidenced by the fact that one of the songs in the show is called A Secretary is Not a Toy. It features the men being scolded and reminded to keep their hands to themselves. Perhaps this song plays differently than it did in the late 1960s. I'm not defending that. You have to approach the material as an object from 60 years ago. And the values on display reflect that. But the songs are beautiful. They're Frank Lesser songs. They're beautiful. There's great choreography. Bob Fosse did the choreography on Broadway. And I think someone else is credited as the choreographer.
39:19But Bob Fosse is credited as creating the dances. So it certainly is inspired by his work. The colors really pop. It's very Technicolor. I was just about to say, very beautiful 60s Technicolor look. Great performances. Robert Morris, we already mentioned. Michelle Lee as Rosemary. The movie was written and directed for the screen by David Swift, who I honestly, I didn't know his name when I went and looked back at the movie this week a little bit. I did not know who David Swift was. He was a former Disney animator. And actually, when you look at this movie, you can see that the guy who made this had a real eye for color, for composition, because that you see in the film, that it's a beautiful use of color in the costumes and the sets.
40:02The movements are very geometric and the sets are very geometric with these big blocks of color. It's just a it's a really like lovely, charming film. I've seen the show on Broadway multiple times. It's kind of a favorite Broadway show, even if it is a little or a lot of dated. Yeah. And I do enjoy this movie. And it would make a kind of an interesting comparison with Office Romance where - Oh, for sure. Where there is so much talk about what is appropriate and inappropriate in the office environment. And that is ultimately, you know, the winking satirical kind of cutesy subject of the film, this film as well.
40:40Yeah. So that's my pick. A fact where Gary is not nothing while my key of my springer can is to write in and not spend the night in. You know, it's funny. I first saw that movie. I'm going to make everyone jealous. Before there was Netflix, if you live in a major city, there was something called The Rep House, a repertory theater. And there was a fabled one that I think you were too young to ever go to, Matt, called The Theater 80. It's on 80 St. Mark's Place, on St. Mark's Place in Lower Manhattan between 2nd and 3rd Avenue. Was that where they ultimately put the Kim's video that was over there?
41:16Is that right next to it? Near it. Near it. Okay. No, I never went. Now it's a traditional, now it's just a stage theater, a tiny little off-Broadway theater. But the Theater 80 was legendary for decades. And what they did was they would program a double feature and it would be one ticket price for both films. And every day the programming would change. And it would always be related movies. And if you missed it, if you weren't able to go on Wednesday the 12th, that's it. You just didn't see it. You know, that was it. So they were showing the producers. Mel Brooks is the producers, which I had seen on VHS, but never seen in a theater.
41:51And I went and I had already paid for the second movie. And I'm like, I don't even know what it was. And it was How to Succeed. I'm like, all right, I'll stick around and watch this. And the first time I saw it was projected, you know, really pristine print. And I just remember thinking, wow, I'm going to have something like the Theater 80 around the corner from me for the rest of my life. And it doesn't really exist anymore. But that was a lot of fun. Yeah, it's a good movie. That's a nice choice. I haven't seen it in a very long time. I'm looking it up. I was thinking of a different place. Yes, Theater 80.
42:20Unfortunately, I think it looks like it was - Destroyed even? Yeah, destroyed. Or at very least, it was sold for$8.8 million a few years ago. Wow. Oh, my God. My pick this week is, I just wanted to be honest. I didn't really pick anything related to office romance because I wanted to just exult in something that's really been delighting me for the past week and bringing me up. There's a lot of negativity in the world. Only fans. No? Bringing me satisfaction. Yeah? Was it? Okay. No, it's not only fans. Oh. But there's a lot of negativity in the world. There's war. There's poverty. There's climate change.
43:02But this is something that's positive. So I have been watching on something on YouTube, which is a streaming service, and this has been free. The band Rush. Oh, gosh. Okay. The band Rush, which, you know, everybody knows at least Tom Sawyer or one or two other songs. They retired several years ago. And then the drummer, who was also the lyricist and to some the most, the beating heart of the band, passed away and they retired. But now they have decided. Neil Peart. R.I.P. Neil Peart. Yeah, we love him. He's the best. And so they came. They are touring again. They hired a new drummer, and they're on tour.
43:44And last week was their big debut with the new drummer. So here's the thing. The new drummer is not a particularly well-known individual, kind of an X Factor. And is a relatively young woman from Germany named Annika Niles, or I don't know how she pronounces it um who is significantly younger than the dudes in the band she's 40 and they're all like 73 or whatever and rush fans have a tendency to be really really really tough no and a little yeah like and like there aren't a lot of women involved in rush fandom as a general rule not not to say that there aren't women rush fans but you know you go to you go to a rush concert and the the men's room line is going to be really long and the women's room line you're going to go right in and out.
44:30So the point is this, no one had a bigger opening night. The fans were really ready to scrutinize this woman. And I was prepared. As you know, I am a Star Trek fan. I'm also a Star Wars fan. Take a shot. That fandom has been really cruel. And it's been upsetting to me as a fan to watch how badly they treated, you know, Star Trek's gone woke, Star Wars gone woke. And I was really, unfortunately ready for this nonsense to hit with the Rush fandom and that was going to crush me the point is this Rush comes to stage Los Angeles was their first show June 6th and they're playing the song Xanadu which is a deep cut they've never opened with Xanadu before and it opens very slowly lots of lots of synthesizers and sci-fi noises and a different Xanadu oh sorry so anyway um the point is this finally the drums kick boom now everybody's on their cell phone getting this ready to go to youtube and in the first two seconds annika dropped her stick oh no you can imagine the pressure this woman was under neil pert the most famous drummer freaks and geeks they do a whole episode about how neil pert's the best yes rush fans are scrutinizing her with a microscope they're all these nerds these disgusting sci-fi nerds like me ready to put her down and she's a girl they hired some girl to be woke and in the first 10 seconds she dropped her stick but she dropped her stick in time she didn't miss a beat she didn't need the stick for 0.1 second and she grabbed it again kept it the crowd goes effing nuts and you can see this all on youtube and there's one person for the entire two and a half hour concert just stuck his phone right on her it's called annika cam you can find it on youtube and then at the end of the show she had to do tom sawyer the big hit and there's incredibly difficult drum fill at the end
46:47she killed it and the entire la forum went nuts the hearts just exploded and I tell you I have found not a whiff of sexism or reactionary attitudes toward her. She is embraced and beloved by the entire Rush fandom in one night. She passed the test with flying colors and now it's just glorious. And they've only done a few shows since because they don't play every night because the other two guys are old guys. They need to get their rest. But the love and adoration. So I have been missing deadlines because I do also write as well as talk on podcasts. I blowing deadlines left and right because I'm staying up to one in the morning watching every single YouTube video I can of Rush in concert.
47:29And this woman, Annika Niles, is killing it. And I would eat glass for her. I'd walk over hot. Oh, my gosh. Anything I would do for her. And it's just really great. It's a nice success story. It's a nice feel good story. And even if you don't like the band Rush, which, believe me, I would understand. For God's sakes, I know my wife does not like I keep showing her video. She's like, great, great, great. Tom Sawyer. Leave me alone. Leave me alone. but uh it it uh it really is a pleasant uplifting thing so that's what i've been streaming what do you what specifically let's say and i refuse to believe this person exists but let's say someone is like i want to listen to rush i want to watch these what what are the videos they should specifically look for i'll just go on youtube and say rush live 2026 okay that's it rush live 2026 and i just want to make sure in case some person maybe someone with a head injury wants to go looking on YouTube for these clips.
48:19I know what to look for. If you do Rush Live 2026 drummer, you will find the exact two moments I'm talking about. I do want to see this opening where she drops the stick, actually. But doesn't miss a beat. Sure, good. And then the audience is rooting for her. Come on, Attica. Yeah, let's see. I'm glad they were being encouraging. The story could have gone in two different directions. Really? No, in all sincerity, that poor woman who was in Star Wars, I forget the actress's name. She played Rose on Star Wars. She was chased out of town and on Star Trek, on Discovery. Kelly Marie Tran, I think is who we're talking about.
48:54Yeah, they were just awful to her. Just those jerks, these losers that were just terrible to that woman. Disgusting. And just unnecessary. And I was worried about something similar happening. And luckily, humanity won in this case. Good. And you didn't have to eat broken glass. No. Like you said you would, though. So we might have to hold you to that at some point. Okay. That's true. Let's talk about modern home shopping. It's sort of become a fun side hobby, right? I'm going to read in a second, like the circumstances that you're looking to watch something in. That can work, too. And I should note that mine here is actually from the FilmSpotting Discord, which I am not 100 percent certain how you join the FilmSpotting Discord. I think you have to be a member of the Patreon, perhaps. Sam can probably fill us in about that. But this one, and you can tell us in a minute, but this recommendation goes out.
53:28We should really do this more like Casey Kasem, I'm realizing. This is a special dedication. This one goes out to Devin in the FilmSpotting Discord. Devin writes, Devin wrote, how about bookend movies that are under two hours that can be downloaded and watched on a flight? so maybe Prime Video since I think that's the only one that still allows laptop downloads to or from New York to Chicago that will be in dialogue with any of the films we'll be watching at Film Spotting Fest like an ease into out of the festival experience type thing so I believe again Sam could probably assist us with the details but I believe when people are listening to this they can still go are their tickets still available Sam?
54:14Yes? Yes, he's giving me thumbs up. So next weekend when you are listening to this, if you're hearing us on the first day of release, is Film Spotting Fest in Chicago. And I went last year. It was a blast. I did a Q &A, but mostly I just got to watch movies at the Music Box, at the Siskel Center. It was wonderful. It was jam-packed every screening. They were just filled with the most wonderful, nice nerds you ever saw in your life. Everyone was having a great time. for the love of the movies it was fantastic now this year's lineup um which explains my pick was i had to pick something that was related here the movies this year are cleo from five to seven good movie cretia good yes very good movies a 25th anniversary screening of wet hot american summer funny and a 25th anniversary screening of the royal tenenbaums a classic so Let's go!
55:08We got some narrow parameters here for our recommendation, Jordan. It's got to be able to be downloaded on a laptop, possibly only on Prime Video. Since most streaming services only allow downloads to mobile devices and not to laptops for some dumb reason. It's also got to be something you can watch on a flight, not like Office Romance, right? That would be no good. And it's got to be under two hours. And it's got to be in dialogue with one of these four movies here. I think you can do it because if I can do it, you can do it. Well, because I am incredibly good at my job, I did manage to find something.
55:41It is in dialogue with Wet Hot American Summer. It shares a director and writers and a bunch of cast members with that film. It is also in dialogue, even though this was not required, it is in dialogue with our main review this week on the show because it is also a romantic comedy. Did you just become the Dice Man for a second? Yeah, what happened? I was happening. I saw it happening in real time. Oh! He just became the Dice Man. It's a hilarious spoof of rom-com cliches. Do you know what movie I'm talking about, Jordan? Sam's nodding. He knows. David Wayne. Is it a David Wayne movie? He did the, oh, yes, Sam's put it.
56:21Yes. It's They Came Together, a very silly movie. They Came Together from 2014, directed by Wet Hot American Summer director David Wayne, written by David Wayne and Michael Showalter, and starring an all-star comedy cast, including Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Ellie Kemper, Jason Manzoukas, Michael Ian Black, Ken Marino, Jack McBrayer, Christopher Maloney, Kobe Smulders, Kenan Thompson, and many, many, many, many more. It is available on Prime Video for the next two weeks. Oh, shoot, yeah. So if you're downloading things from there, you got two weeks, but that's in the time frame for Film Spotting Fest.
56:54We're good there. It is also available on the Roku Channel, on Hoopla, on Fandango at Home, formerly known as Voodoo, and it's also on Tubi. So it's available a lot of places, mostly with ads. It is essentially two romantic comedies, what Airplane is to disaster movies. It just mocks every single, tired, tacky, nonsensical cliche in these movies. It is hilarious. It is Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler are the two main characters. It starts with them at a restaurant, like kind of explaining their romance to Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper, and they kind of start telling the story of how they fell in love.
57:31They claim it's kind of like one of those corny romantic comedy type stories. How so? Well, Paul Rudd's Joel, they explain, he's a romantic comedy type of guy. You know, he's handsome, but in a non-threatening way. Yeah, I could see that. Vaguely, but not overtly Jewish. You're right. He's just Jewish enough. And Molly is the kind of cute, klutzy girl that sometimes will drive you a little bit crazy, but you can't help but fall in love with her. Guilty. Okay, okay, so we have our main characters. Not quite. There was one more character in this story who is just important as the two of them. New York City.
58:05And for 82 jam-packed minutes. And yes, once again, plenty. I'm way under that two-hour threshold. It's one hilarious scene after another. There's the opening montage in every one of these movies where the characters are getting dressed in their respective apartments for work. But like Amy Poehler is shaving her face and then falls down the stairs. she you know and it's very uh you've got mail inspired and the shop around the corner obviously she runs her own little tiny candy store where she gives all the money to charity and he works at the big conglomerate candy systems and research and you know assuming you have a very silly sense of humor yeah and if you are listening to this podcast by this point still at this point and you're not doing it because you're the spouse of someone who said hey do you mind if we turn off the radio and put on a podcast for a little bit, then you probably share our sense of humor.
58:59This movie you will laugh out loud at, even if you are streaming it at home, but even if you are on an airplane heading to Film Spotting Fest, I think it will be a winner if you have not seen it. Go ahead, Jordan. Well, it's funny. There's another connection. Oh, what did I miss? What did I miss? It's a wacky connection to office romance, which is part of the goof is that they meet, they go to a - A costume party. A costume party, and they're both dressed like Ben Franklin. That's correct. That's correct. Tony Hale, the great Tony Hale, plays a Ben Franklin impersonator in the marvelous Hulu film Quiz Lady, which is one of the funniest movies of recent years.
59:41And Tony Hale kills it as a very serious Ben Franklin impersonator. and so there's a lot of Ben Franklin jokes on today's SVU. That's all I'm saying. Okay. It's pretty good stuff. I'd forgotten Ellie Kemper was in it because this movie came out before Kimmy Schmidt. Yes. And so I was not as hip to, and I haven't seen it since it came out. I'd like to watch it again now in the post Kimmy Schmidt environment. I will say that when I looked back on my Letterboxd page, the first time I saw it when it came out, I gave it three stars. I rewatched it a few years ago. I gave it three and a half stars. I rewatched it this week.
1:00:14I gave it four stars. every time i watch next two times it's going to be my favorite movie i've ever seen every time i watch it i laugh more it has so many jokes that even if you remember things you you like there will be 10 things you didn't remember so like you know like i was like oh my god i forgot all about this there's a whole scene where christopher maloney who's never funny in anything except in david wayne movies he always plays the intense cop on sv on the other svu the quote-unquote real SVU. I don't know about that, but they might say that. He's always the gruff cop. In David Wayne movies, he's always the imbecile, the weirdo, bizarre.
1:00:50And in They Came Together, he has a scene where they had that same costume party. He's not dressed like Ben Franklin. He's dressed like a superhero. He has like a green spandex suit with a cape. He has a stomach ache and he has to go to the bathroom and he can't get out of his costume. He can't unzipper it. The zipper's in the back and he's reaching and he's trying to get it and he's making these faces and noises and then when they cut back in a you know a minute or two later he's now he's now out of his costume he's in a he's looks like he's just gotten out of the shower he has he has a uh a bathrobe on and a uh a shower like a shower cap you know the clear plastic shower cap and keenan thompson is like how come your superhero costume is covered in crap on the floor in the bathroom.
1:01:39He's like, I don't know. He's like, did you do that? And then shower? And then drink? And it just goes, this whole scene goes on and on. It's incredible. There's a lot of, in this movie, like, how long can they push this? Like, they push the joke past the point of being funny so that it becomes funny again, you know? Yes. The most famous scene in the movie is that personified. It's a scene in a bar with Paul Rudd. You can say that again. Yes. With Paul Rudd and a bartender and they go back and forth saying the same three lines literally for like a minute and a half, just repeating the same lines.
1:02:11Maybe Sam can put in a little bit of that scene right here. That will be good. You look like you've had a bad day. Hey, tell me about it. Well, you came in here looking like crap and you haven't said very much. You didn't say that again. Well, you came in here looking like crap and you haven't said very much. Hey, tell me about it. Well, you came in here looking like crap but you haven't said very much. So yeah, so that's my pick. They came together. That's a good one. It is streaming, hopefully downloadable on Amazon Prime, or you can watch it on Roku, Hoopla, Fandango at Home, and Tubi. What do you got, Jordan?
1:02:46I'm going to watch it just because I love Kimmy Schmidt so much, and Ellie Kemper doesn't really work that much these days. I don't know why, but she was a genius. She had the funniest moment. Well, there's... Kimmy Schmidt is maybe the funniest show ever, and um she has the funniest joke in history of filmed entertainment when um you know because she plays a dunce right she's an emotionally stunted girl living in a woman's body and um she's trying to flirt with a guy behind the counter at a bookstore and her friends are like whispering from behind a potted plant basically telling her what to do now now bat your eyelashes now do this now make them laugh now smile now look sexy now pout and she's doing it all and they go ghost him.
1:03:32And she goes, what? And they go ghost him. So she turns around and says, ooh, get out of my amusement park. And the way she does it, because she's very cute. Is that your recommendation, that particular episode? You know what? Yeah, just watch Kimmy Schmidt. I mean, it's the funniest thing if you've never seen it. I thought I had to call 911. I was laughing so hard when I saw that the first time. Okay. Do you have another recommendation for us? A recommendation for one of our listeners. Yeah, there is on Amazon Prime. You can toggle by time and you can find something to stream on Amazon Prime between 60 and 90 minutes.
1:04:13But I wanted one between 90 and 120 was kind of the assignment, but they didn't have that toggle. So I streamed, I looked between 60 and 90 minutes and I said, is there anything that fits the assignment? And holy cow, is there something that fits the assignment? like to a shocking degree. What is it? One of the four movies that will be screening at Film Spotting Fest in Chicago is Crescia, which is a very, very good independent movie that maybe some people saw that is all set. It's kind of like an emotional horror film. A hurricane of emotions. It's all set at a Thanksgiving dinner. Now there happens to be another movie all set in the prep of Thanksgiving dinner, much like Couché.
1:05:03The prep to a Thanksgiving dinner, under 90 minutes, streaming on Amazon Prime that you can download to your laptop, and is very good. And what is it? Can you guess what it is? Well, I know what it is because I think you put it in the chat earlier. I did. I put it in the chat. So just tell people. The movie is Pieces of April from 2003. Now, this movie was a little bit of a surprise independent success when it came out. You know, it cost almost next to nothing. According to Wikipedia, it cost$300 ,000 to make it. It made$3.3 million at the box office. It was a big hit. It was the first thing that I had ever seen with Katie Holmes in it.
1:05:44It was kind of the movie that made her a star. And she doesn't look like Katie Holmes. She kind of looks like a punk rock girl with dyed hair and makeup and whatnot. And she had been on Dawson's Creek for a few years by this point. Oh, was that right? Okay. This didn't make her a star. It put her on my attention. I was going to say it made her a star in your eyes, perhaps, but to a lot of other people. She was too much of an intellectual to watch Garvey Lake at Dawson's Creek. Yes. So, yeah, it's a dramedy because she's sort of the wayward daughter and she's trying to make a Thanksgiving dinner for her parents.
1:06:21and her mother is ill and there's, you know, it kind of all builds to a lot of, it's kind of like a play because it's all shot in a very realistic looking East Village apartment circa 2003. And it was also shot on the early video of the period. So it kind of looks, you know, some might say it looks like junk, but it looks like what these movies look like in 2003. There was kind of a time, like Spike Lee's Bamboozled. Yeah, the DV, it's kind of that DV moment where they made DV movies and they were very grainy. What was that guy? Lars von Trier made a few movies. Lars von Trier, yes. It's kind of American dogma look, yes.
1:07:04But it was a bit of a major success. And I think it's a movie that people don't talk about anymore because time has moved on. The mom, by the way, was Patricia Clarkson. The dad is Oliver Platt. But Alison Pill is in there also. Isaiah Whitlock Jr. is in the movie as well. A lot of cool people are in it. And I recommend it. I will be 100 % honest. I haven't watched it since 2003. But when I was looking for something that fit the assignment, I said, that's shockingly fits the assignment. So I want to rewatch it because it's been a long time since 2003. I remember coming out of that movie being pretty, pretty pro.
1:07:39And by the way, it was directed and written by a fellow by the name of Peter Hedges, who also is a playwright, but is also the father of Lucas Hedges. Yes. That's kind of what he's best known for now is his son. Yeah. Well, he also did Dan in Real Life, I know, is a Peter Hedges joint. I think he wrote about a boy, the film about a boy, or one of the credited writers on it. And he made a movie called Ben is Back, starring his son, Lucas Hedges. That's right. That's right. So that's my recommendation. There you go. I can't believe we found, we found with that incredible list of parameters, we found two good recommendations.
1:08:20All of these obstructions. And it's got to be super short. It's under 90. Because even though the flight may be longer, it never is that long. You always got to hit stop. The person next to you wants to go to the bathroom. The drink card is coming down. 90 minutes is the perfect time to watch a movie. You know you're going to see it. Isn't it terrible when you're on a flight and you got like 15 minutes left in a movie and you land? Yeah, you land and they cut off the in-flight entertainment. Like, how does it end? You know, you're watching Empire Strikes Back, having no idea that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father.
1:08:44The worst is when you land, they turn it off, and then they say, well, folks, we're a little early, and we've just got to wait for a gate. And then you're sitting there for 45 minutes. It's terrible. And you're like, I could have finished this movie and watched an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm if you hadn't turned this darn thing off. That's the worst. It's timing. No! No! Does anybody have a stove by tomorrow? Try Wayne in 5D. He's got a new stove. Are you Wayne? Wayne with a new stove. Let's talk about modern home shopping. It's sort of become a fun side hobby, right? Scrolling listings at night, dreaming about kitchens you've never seen, or backyards you haven't even stepped foot in.

1:12:03I'm Glenn Washington, host of Snap Judgment, the award-winning storytelling podcast from KQED, and every week, Snap deals a new card, like jumping on Rihanna's private plane, or the accidental bank robber, or even the man who was swallowed by a hippo. What? pick a card any card snap judgment from kqed new episodes every thursday wherever you get your podcasts well listen i think we had a good a good run on the old svu today the only thing that's going to make it better but we'll just recap the rec seg how to succeed in business without really trying is related to office romance the rush 2026 tour videos on youtube with Annika Niles, the new drummer, has nothing to do with that.
1:12:53And two movies related to Film Spotting Fest in Chicago, 2026. They Came Together, very funny David Wayan movie, and Pieces of April, which in my memory was a very good Peter Hedges movie. And now the only thing that's going to make this episode better is to play another game that I win because I have a tendency. I have a tendency. I have a tendency to win these little trivia games at the end. It's very impressive. I'm like the New York Knicks of Trivia 2026 is what it is. I'm unstoppable. This should be a parade for me. Yeah, it's funny. You often get confused for Jalen Brunson. I've been with you.
1:13:28We've been at movies and people are like, excuse me, sir. Yes. Will you sign my sneakers? Are you New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson? And he has to explain. I say, no, no. I say, yes, I am. And that will be$300 for my autograph. Hats off to the Knicks and hats off to this episode so far. All right. I am in charge of this week's game, which means producer Sam will be looking to defeat SVU's games master, Jordan Hoffman. You're the captain now. And the game they will be competing in this week is a brand new one that came to me like a bolt out of the blue while I was walking my dog last week. And literally, I just I don't know where it came from.
1:14:08Fully formed. It is called Portmanteau to Toe. Wow. Very well done. Here is how it will work. First of all, we all know what a portmanteau is, right? Remind me on it. Maybe the listeners, if anyone in the listeners, you know, they don't know. A portmanteau is a new word formed by blending the sounds and combining the meanings of two distinct words, or in this case, movie titles. So I have made seven portmanteau movie titles. Wow. I am going to give you the plot synopsis of a new imaginary movie based on creating and smushing two movie titles into one, and you are going to give me the portmanteau title.
1:14:52This is similar to a Jeopardy! before and after, in a way. I guess so. I'm a Philistine. I don't watch a lot of Jeopardy! You're already the winner of this round of movie trivia. You won, just by coming up with this. That's right. So just for an example, this is not one of the actual questions. Just for an example for people listening. If I said this movie is about a mafia Don struggles to prepare for his daughter's wedding, you would say? The godfather of the bride. The godfather of the bride. The godfather and father of the bride. The godfather of the bride. Very good. Now. This is cute. To make things just a little easier because.
1:15:28Trademark this. This is a good game. I like it. Thank you. Just to make it a little easier and not have it be every movie in the entire world as a contender. One of the two films in each title is a film that has been discussed on the first 10 episodes of Film Spotting SVU. I went to Letterboxd, where the great Sam Van Halgren has created a list, which is called Now Streaming on Bazooka, a Film Spotting SVU archive. It contains a list of every movie we recommend on the show and where to find it. So from that list of movies, I made Portmanteau Tottos. Now, not both of the movies. One is going to be.
1:16:08Sure, sure. Now, for extra credit, is an actor from the West Wing in there also? Oh, be quiet, you. I can't believe you didn't save this game for a movie that we reviewed with Port or Man or Toe in the title. Oh, wow. You kind of jumped the gun. I did. Well, we can bring it back. If the soundtrack was made by Portugal the Man, we really had it. That would be incredible. All right. Does everyone understand the rules here? Just buzz in as we buzz in and we'll... Okay. Here's the first portmanteau plot synopsis. Here we go. Wow. Yeah. I'm excited. Two executives at a condom company inadvertently spark an international incident at the World Cup and become the most wanted men in Brazil.
1:16:52So, while on the run, they meet a handsome corporate downsizing expert who lives... Jordan! Balls up in the air. Jordan is correct. Balls up and up in the air. They meet a corporate downsizing expert who lives out of a suitcase traveling the world, but finally comes to see a reason to settle down when he meets a beautiful woman. So, there you go. Jordan is on the board. It is one to nothing. Is up in the air a good movie? I remember liking it when it came out. That's a great question. I have not revisited it. I saw I thought of this one. I was like, boy, I need to revisit up in the air because that got a lot of hype.
1:17:28A lot of hype. So much hype. The hype was up in the air now. Maybe not. All right. Title movie number two. Here we go. Astronaut Neil Armstrong encounters brutal turbulence on his return home from the moon. after he crash lands on earth and awakens he finds he is in a world where women are the dominant gender in society um ladies first man ladies first man is correct well that was interesting because he switched it because he talked about what i can here no you did well that's good i need it's good to be you put me on my toes ladies first man jordan sasha baron cohen's netflix film ladies first and first man which is Ryan Gosling Neil Armstrong biopic Damien Chazelle's okay Sam there's plenty of time here I'm still here I'm still here the film with Joaquin Phoenix I'm still here again is there a here I'm still here and it would be I'm still here and the Robert Zemeckis movie here there you go that's another one that's a bonus portmanteau time okay Okay.
1:18:44Number three. Oh boy. Jordan's winning two to nothing. A former CIA analyst agrees to help stand in for his former boss at a covert meeting in Dubai, but gets way more than he bargains for when the man he is meeting isn't a man at all. He is a hyper-intelligent chimpanzee who needs his help ending a conflict between the species. Okay. It is this. Jack Ryan Ghost War of the Planet of the Apes. Jordan, you are absolutely correct. Although I would have preferred the full title, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan Ghost War for the Planet of the Apes. I changed my mind. I hate this game. I never want... All right.
1:19:40Let's do this. So I'm going to be honest. they're going to get a little trickier now because these are not going to necessarily be movies that we were. Yes. I mean, I'm giving you that. These are pretty detailed plot synopsis. It's good. They're really good. These might not be movies we reviewed. These might just be Rexeg titles. Yeah. Some of these. They're still on Bazooka though. But they're all available on Bazooka. Even these portmanteaus. Yes. Okay. Number four. in this witty, screwball, epic, historical romance. A vivacious woman pursues a dorky musicologist through an incredibly detailed recreation of Moscow and the surrounding country during the Russian Revolution.
1:20:28Uh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, um, the dorky musicologist. Wait, we just talked about this. Yes, we did. It was a Jordan recommended movie. Yeah, but what the hell was it? You recommended it. I know, but listen, I recommend so many things. It's a film starring Barbra Streisand. Right, right, right. So it's What's Up, Dr. Zhivago. What's Up, Dr. Zhivago. Yeah. Jordan, you're dominating. I'm sorry. Well, I needed an assist on that one. I was going like history of sound. Didn't somebody recommend that? Didn't you say musicologist? I just got fixated on history. We did talk about history of sound.
1:21:13We did. That's right. We did, but that was. All right. We could do the history of sound of metal and he's also dead or something. All right. All right. Number five. They're getting weirder. A plane carrying a beautiful woman and her seven small friends crash lands in a South American mountain range. They must go to - Go, Sam. Society of the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is correct. Sam, you are on the board with Society of the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. They must go to extreme lengths and eat the dead bodies of some of their friends to survive. Also, it's a musical. Which of the seven dwarves would you eat first?
1:22:02Great question. Let's get into it. You know Doc is kind of grizzly. Yeah, Doc's going to be tough. And Dopey's poisoned. I don't think you want that. Yeah, Dopey. I think it gets a tuck in the bashful or somebody like that. You know who probably would be the right answer is Grumpy. Because you know that guy's not doing anything. He's grumpy. He's probably very tender. He's going to eat you if you don't eat him first. That's right. Right. And if you could shut him up a little early, that would be good. He's going to eat you. Okay. It is four to one, and Jordan cannot be defeated, but we're going to do the last.
1:22:37I'm picturing Grumpy from Snow White with a big fork and a knife chasing me around the snow. Chasing me around the plane fuselage trying to eat me. I mean, these are free ideas if anyone wants to make these movies. I've got to lie down. I've got to lie down. Well, it's not why it's in the public domain now. This will happen, right? This is like, yeah, Woody the Pooh, blood and sugar, whatever it's called. Blood and honey. That's right. Okay. Two more. We've got two more. This one might be a little trickier. Here we go. This one might be a little trickier. I probably should have made this the number seven because I think this might be the trickiest.
1:23:08Here we go. Number six. Yeah. Two college kids take an experimental drug they discover in their dorm room, which gives them hallucinations in the form of a series of impossibly unfunny comedy sketches. Yes, Jordan. Pizza Movie 43. You got it! Pizza Movie 43! A series of impossibly unfunny comedy sketches, including one where Hugh Jackman plays a man with testicles on his neck. That is Movie 43, one of the most unconscionable works of Cinnabon. Let me ask you a question. That's ever existed. There's a book coming out later this autumn about recent comedies. Yeah. You know, the frat pack and all that.
1:23:56Is Movie 43 mentioned in this forthcoming book? I don't believe it is. Okay. This is a book primarily about funny movies. Movie 43 does not fit the bill. The book in question, of course, is Funny Business, my book that comes out. What is the least funny movie that you'd write about in the book? That's a good question. I'd have to think about that. I don't know off the top of my head. There is a chapter toward the end of the book where I write about sort of the kind of death knell of this type of comedy. And there are some unfunny movies. Freiburg and Seltzer probably get mentioned in there a little bit.
1:24:27I don't know if they are. But like Zoolander 2 is in there. And that is not a very good movie. As wonderful as Zoolander, the original is. Sure. Yeah. Zoolander 2, not a triumph. Okay. Speaking of triumphs. Speaking of triumphs. Portmanteau to toe. We have one more to go. Unfortunately, Jordan is going to win. And he cannot be defeated, but we're going to play out the string. This is for bragging rights, I suppose. Actually, this question is worth six points. Yes, that's what I've... There we go. It's like the golden snitch. Here we go. The last one. Two enormous monsters awaken and battle for supremacy, imperiling the entire world, including a beloved small town vinyl shop and its eclectic group of clerks, whose store is in danger of being shut down after one of the employees took all of the money out of the safe and lost it gambling in Atlantic City.
1:25:23I know what that... Two enormous monsters. Perhaps from a verse of monsters. Yeah, I'm with you, but it has to end in the word empire, and I can't make that happen. You can if you can think of the most recent one of those movies. King Kong versus Godzilla Empire records. You've got most of the correct words, but you're missing a few. Sam, I'm going to give you the opportunity here. If you can name the most recent Godzilla and Kong movie, you can steal this one. I didn't see it. The last one I saw was, I guess, not this. I mean, the last one I saw. Yeah. I thought it was just the Adam Wingard one or is there one after that?
1:26:06I think he made two. He made Godzilla versus Kong. that was the whole title and then I believe he did the sequel which is the movie I'm looking for here which I did not see so it's Godzilla vs. Kong Battle of the Empire it's Godzilla X Kong or Godzilla and Kong or Godzilla times Kong it has an X instead of versus and then the subtitle was The New Empire Godzilla times Kong Godzilla X Kong The New Empire Records I didn't see this was it any good this movie no no yeah the one before was okay i guess that was the first movie after covid well it came out i saw it at home it was one of those hbo max in theaters and and and on hbo max at the same time at least for me it was the first um was that the first press screening you went to no it wasn't pressing i went bought a ticket like a regular person i saw that one at home i watched that one at home i think the first one i might have seen in a theater again was Snake Eyes G.I.
1:27:09Joe Origins. Boy, was that an auspicious return to the theater. All right. Well, unfortunately, Jordan, you won again. You remain the games master. Yeah. What can I say? When you got it, you got it. But I'm very proud. I was very proud of this idea. I think it's a good game. You should be. We should do it again next week. I'll host the next one, Matt, because I think you might have fun being on the other end of this one. Okay. Portman toe-to-toe. I think I saw that on OnlyFans. Oh, boy. We'll get back to the beginning. Well, listeners, you've done it again. You've spent another stretch of time listening to FilmSpotting, SVU.
1:27:49And I had fun this time. So I think what we're going to do now, as we always do, is talk about what's new in the world of streaming. first up of course is um theatrical releases that were in theaters that maybe you missed but are now available to rent or buy so if you subscribe it's not free but for a few dollars more you can watch it now now now and that includes the billy eilish concert documentary hit me hard and soft which was co-directed by james cameron that makes it a little bit of a big deal absolutely i am i'm curious to see it i missed it i was kind of bummed that i couldn't make the screening of that one.
1:28:27Yeah. Are your daughters into Billie Eilish or not yet? Not really. No, they have not. That's not someone they've kind of gotten into. Maybe we'll watch it together and I'll be like, you need to understand this is cinema. Notice the camera angles. That's right. That's right. Okay. Also, there's something called Blue Heron, which is the name of a bird, but also the name of an acclaimed indie debut by a director named - Very well-reviewed movie this year. One of the big indie movies of the year that's gotten great Great reviews. I've not seen it yet. Sophie Ramvari is the name of the director. I think it might have premiered at TIFF last year.
1:29:02Sounds about right. Also a fellow by the name of Adam Raymeier, Carolina Caroline. And this stars Samara Weaving and Kyle Gallner. There's another side to Samara Weaving. And she does a lot of those horror movies and running around. But she does a little acting in this. furthermore uh boots riley and his big hat in his new movie i love boosters an ode to shoplifting also john carney who came up last week um you know the director of once that's right we were talking about him his newest one also another music film power ballad yeah with paul rudd from they came together the great paul rudd and also oh nick jonas there you go nick jonas i saw This one I saw, I thought it was very, very good.
1:29:51Very good. I recommend that one. He's reliable, John Corey. He is. He is. This was a bit of a box office dud in this summer landscape. It did not pop in the way that Obsession did or Back Rooms, but that's what streaming's all about. A second lifeline. Finally, the movie everyone was streaming for, I want to see a movie about a piano tuner turned safecracker. and it's Tuner, which is also how my father-in-law says tuna, tuna fish, a tuner sandwich. Stars Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman, who hasn't been in a movie in a while. I hope it's a hit and that they can then make a sequel called Tuner 2.
1:30:35Tuner. No, just Tuner, T-W-O-N-E-R, Tuner. And Tuner is directed by a fella by the name, this is still in theaters actually, directed by a fellow named Daniel Rohrer. And Daniel Rohrer also made the documentary called The AI Doc, The Apocalyptics, How I Learned to Love the AI Apocalypse or whatever it's called, which I did see and found intriguing. And that's what's coming that you have to pay for. Now, if you have some of these services, these are gratis. And that includes Gore Verbinski's Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die with Sam Rockwell, which I saw and mostly liked. Did you see this one, Matt?
1:31:17I did see this one, and I did not think this one was so great. It wasn't terrible. It's a streaming play now, so on Hulu, if you're a Hulu subscriber. I do like me a good Gore Verbinski movie. I can kind of go to bat for a lot of Gore Verbinski's films. This would not be on the upper tier of Gore movies for me. It's very episodic in a way. They go into different realms to do things. It's kind of like 12 Monkeys meets Groundhog Day is sort of the premise, essentially. It's not. It's good. It's good. It's all right. Now, Biggie, Avatar, Fire and Ash. What's his name? Jake Sully. You were going to say James Cameron.
1:31:59You can't remember James Cameron's name. James Cameron, Jake Sully, Princess Neytiri, the whale that talks, whatever that whale's name. Payacon. What? That's right. Don't pretend like you don't know the name of Payakan, the mighty Tolkoon. This is on Disney Plus, and you've probably seen it already. Everybody sees the Avatar movies. What about Varang? You didn't mention Varang. Oh, he's bad. She's bad. Oh, she's bad. I'm sorry. She's bad. Yeah, that's right. I'm really questioning your commitment to Sparkle Motion here, Jordan. You don't seem to be aware about all of the world of Avatar. I'm going to tell you what.
1:32:35I did not have to write about Avatar 3. And usually for a big fat release, a movie like this, you sink your teeth into you. I write so many like I wrote so many articles about Disclosure Day. I chewed that movie up and spit it out for this one. I just went as a civilian and I just kind of went in. I had a bunch of Reese's Reese's Pieces and when went out. I think actually we sat next to each other during this. That's possible. I don't. Maybe. Maybe. I remember. I really enjoyed. I really liked Fire and Ash. I know. It's great. Yeah. I know some people were like, oh it's just a rehash of the second one i don't know i don't know if it was wrong i don't know what was going on but i was very into this one i thought this one was really really good i am looking forward to re-watching it on disney plus disney plus yeah and she's very saucy in it and then what's his name very saucy what is the wrong only fans would be would that really would be a huge hit not in my house but the untold billions that james cameron could make on that one is unbelievable alright what else do we have talk about blue episode Julian Schnabel who has made a number of very good movies over the years The Diving Bell and the Butterfly one of my favorites the one with Javier Bardem which I'm forgetting the name of he's done a lot of good movies before was it Before Nightfalls that's right yeah and others and of course he was a well regarded At Eternity's Gate Gate Gate wasn't that another one he was and maybe still is a visual artist museums and galleries had a whole other career before he started making films julian schnabel is back within the hand of dante a vatican priest discovers dante's original divine comedy manuscript and this one's got like extra chapters or something i don't know to choose your own adventure story i don't know when asked to authenticate it writer nick toshis who was a real person who wrote this book i guess played by oscar isaac steals it okay i guess didn't really do this uh while a parallel story follows dante's quest to create his masterpiece it sounds twisty and turny sounds a little bit like um oh what's that movie with um with uh with sean connery uh and and young christian slater um oh is that in the name of the yes the name of the rose i'm getting in the name of the rose vibe here um but i haven't seen this new movie but it's debuting on netflix any minute now so maybe we'll watch about this coming i would be up for that i would be up for that i do like julian schnabel a lot of julian schnabel's movies there's a movie called forbidden fruits coming to shutter i don't know what that is and there's another movie called undertone to hbo max which i know was like uh people who are really into like sound mixing was the big deal i didn't see yes the sound design of it is uh that's what it's all about it's spooky sound it's a they say it's the scariest movie you've ever heard so that's what's coming up soon uh matt singer what's what else is coming up anything well the only other thing we have to mention here is something going straight to Netflix, another comedy, a lot of comedy on Netflix lately.
1:35:33This one is called Little Brother and it stars John Cena and Eric Andre. That is an appealing combination, in my opinion. A famous real estate agent's carefully curated world is upended when his eccentric little brother, in air quotes, like a little brother from one of those organizations where, you know, kids kind of help out other kids. Unexpectedly reappears, directed by Matt Spicer, who made Ingrid Goes West, which I also believe I saw. I think I saw that at Sundance, I think. That was a big hit. Big Sundance. So we've done a bunch of comedies already. Could do Little Brother. I think we should do the Schnabel, personally.
1:36:13Oh, for sure, yeah. I want to see Oscar Isaac as Dante running around 14th century. As the great Nick Toskies, or whatever his name was. double thing. They also go back in time. And I think he's running around Florence in the year 1100 or whenever Dante lived. Alright, so I think we've settled it. You know what you're going to learn in this movie? What Dante's last name was. All those famous Italians had last names. Leonardo, Michelangelo, all the turtles. They all had last names. Do you already know what his name is? I know Dante's. Alliguerre. Not everybody knows. Do you know Michelangelo's last name?
1:36:46Buonanotte. Turtle? I think he's Michelangelo Buonanotte okay maybe I'm wrong if listeners if I'm wrong about anything and God knows I am never write to feedback feedback at filmspottingsvu.com let us know what you think about all of today's topics we spoke for so long this is the longest episode yet of SVU I think it's the shortest actually really it might literally be the shortest it feels like the longest I'm very tired it's getting to the end of the week but I want to thank the listeners. I want to thank Sam for being a good sport. It's not my fault that I beat him at these games. He's a good sport.
