Key claims
- People We Meet on Vacation is a breezy, agreeable rom-com whose standout is Emily Bader’s star-making performance as Poppy.
- The film’s locations (New Orleans, Bourbon Street, Cafe du Monde beignets, etc.) make it feel less like green-screen/volume production and support the travel-vicarious thrill.
- The romance is physically convincing, but the hosts want more “emotional chemistry,” and Tom Blythe’s character is described as bland/charisma-light.
- The movie’s structure—present-day tension with flashbacks across multiple vacations—is praised as elegant.
Notable examples
- Barcelona apartment “raining indoors” climactic scene.
- New Orleans beignets at Cafe du Monde.
- A “triple A / quadruple A” joke.
- A forced skinny-dipping/“hop” scene.
- Related recs: Fresh Kills (Emily Bader), and Romare’s The Bakery Girl of Monceau (Criterion, 23 minutes).

2:58One of the most popular films of 2026 never came to theaters. It's People We Meet on Vacation, which is playing exclusively on Netflix. I'm Jordan Hoffman. And I'm Matt Singer. With more movies, more series, more stuff going straight to streaming than ever before, it felt like the right time for a podcast that keeps track of it all. And that podcast is Film Spotting Streaming Video Unit. This week, we will talk about people we meet on vacation, plus this week's new to streaming titles, some deep cut streaming recs, and a game.
3:40It's all coming up on Film Spotting SVU.
3:50Welcome to FilmSpotting SVU. I'm Matt Singer. We're going to get to our review in a second. We want to reiterate here, throw out our new email address for feedback. Comments, criticisms, specifically of Jordan's performance, not so much mine. suggestions or this is a service only you can only find here in film spotting svu you can get personalized streaming recommendations from us all you need to do send an email to feedback at film spotting svu.com tell us what kind of movies you like or are looking to watch maybe tell us you know the streaming services you use and that's all we need to know we'll take it from there.
4:38And we've got some good examples this week. I'm excited to talk about one. We do. I like it. I like helping people. It makes me feel like my life has some sort of value. I like helping people in this because it's very easy. It's true. You know, I don't have to, like, get out and, like, drive somewhere. Do exercise. Yeah, no exercise. No lifting. Lift heavy things. Never, never. I'm not driving to the airport. Donate money. Never, never. You said you're never driving people to the airport. Never am I driving someone to the airport. Maybe the local, you know. It's so funny. Whenever you drive somewhere when you're in some out-of-state somewhere and there's like a little microscopic airport, it's like, is that just the mail?
5:18Is that just mail? Is that just Janine Turner in Northern Exposure bringing the mail somewhere, those tiny little airports? If anybody knows, write to feedback at filmspottingsvu.com. Now, Matt, what are we talking about this week? Well, later in the show, we're going to get to some new streaming titles. We also are, as we mentioned, we are going to give some personalized streaming recommendations. And again, there is going to be a game, a new game at the end of the show. I created yet another new game. And we're going to find out if Jordan can keep his winning streak alive. This is what, episode four.
5:53So you're three and oh. It's a little bit exciting because I'm not usually so good at these things. But, you know, Sam, our producer engineer and the man behind the Truman, he's the Ed Harris in our Truman show. Um, you know, it's funny. This is SVU and he's SVH. I don't know if there's any connections there. That's a really great point. Sam, I'm going to be thinking about that for the next three to four weeks. Sam puts up a good fight each week, but I have defeated him each week and I'm three, you know, and I want to know, am I going to continue to four? And we're going to find out at the end of this episode.
6:29You sound very cocky. I know. This might come back and boomerang around on you, which nothing would make me happier than to see you laid low. I appreciate that. Later in the show. But first. Yes. Let's get to our review of people we meet on vacation. On vacation, you can be anyone you want. Who wants to go skinny dipping? Alex does not. Maybe vacation Alex does. That's why I want to travel. You can actually be who you want to be instead of who they say you are. How about every summer, wherever we are, we meet somewhere in the world for a trip? Deal. The Manic Pixie Dream Girl is back in the runaway Netflix original hit, People We Meet on Vacation.
7:16Based on the book by best-selling author of YA and regular A-fiction, Emily Henry. this breezy and agreeable motion picture is directed by brett haley whose earlier work includes sundance charmers like i'll see you in my dreams the hero and hearts beat loud haley has now found a comfortable perch making direct to netflix movies and with this his third one he struck some gold should you toggle matt singer should you toggle by popularity on Letterboxd, you'll find - Love to toggle things on Letterboxd. One of my favorite past items. Only when the lights are low. Should you toggle by popularity on Letterboxd, you will find that this mid-budget romantic comedy is in fact the fourth highest rated movie of 2026, highest ranked.
8:10Over 1.1 million people have logged it and 259 ,000 people have pushed the little heart button. And according to Netflix's Ministry of Propaganda, 50 million people streamed it by the end of January. And now it's May. So it's God knows how many people have watched. Could be 51 million by now. It is true. I think after the initial push, things do drop off. But nevertheless, it's a lot of people. Yes. Now, the movie is about a platonic couple that finally, finally, finally kiss already at the end of the movie. and they do so inside of a Barcelona apartment where it's also raining indoors somehow.
8:49I never quite figured that out, but it was very photogenic. Barcelona is just one of many fancy vistas in this picture because our lead character, an adorable young woman by the name of Poppy, is a travel writer. The film visits New York City, the wilds of British Columbia, Tuscany, New Orleans, and importantly, some Puttsville town somewhere in Ohio, which is where the big finish is. Much of this was actually shot on location, which I think is part of the reason why this movie is such a success. But the main reason this film was a success is for one reason and one reason only. It's the fantastic performance of my favorite new Hollywood actress, Emily Bader, a 29-year-old California native who I am ready to state unequivocally, and I'm not kidding around here.
9:40She is one of the great talents of her generation. And I can't wait to talk. Wow. I honestly think that. And we're going to get into that. She is funny. She is charming. She is beautiful. And I love her. Now, there are other people. There are other people in the movie, too. Sure. For example. Do you love any of them? One of them I love. I love Alan Ruck. Alan Ruck is only in it for a couple of scenes. And he is better known to me anyway, as Captain John Harriman of the USS Enterprise B from Star Trek Generations. Sure. There's also the lead actor, a fellow by the name of Tom Blythe or Blythe or B-L-Y-T-H, who is a bit of a charisma vacuum in this, but he sure has some ripped abs.
10:24Nevertheless, Bader is so great that she more than compensates for his lackluster performance and for the fact that this movie is, let's be honest, a bit on the formulaic side. is it really the fourth best movie of 2026 no of course not but i did not at all regret watching it i really really really had a good time and matt i'm wondering did you enjoy this movie as much as i did i i think we're in pretty close agreement here i have to say i mean um i i don't know that i would have stated on the record that i love emily bader i want her i mean if i had her address I'd send her a letter. You know, that's how much I love her.
11:04People are going to be using this as evidence, I feel like, in some sort of legal proceeding later on. I'd send her a letter saying you're very talented. That's what the letter will say. She is talented. She is absolutely a star. It is a star-making performance. I am not familiar with her work prior to this, although, you know, I can read Wikipedia. I can see she's done other things. But she was a total unknown to me. And I do agree she really pops off the screen, one might say. Yeah. As Poppy. And she is she is very charming, very funny, very likable. I also concur that I do think that there is something refreshing about this movie.
11:43We've already talked. This is our fourth episode now, I believe. We have already talked a few times about movies shot in front of green screens, movies shot in volumes, movies that look like they were made, you know, just in a warehouse with a with a blank wall behind them. And this movie, you can tell that a lot of it was shot in these locations. It's a real movie. They go to New Orleans. I've been to New Orleans. They go to Cafe du Monde to get beignets. They go to the real. It's very clearly the real place. They have the beignets. You know, they're walking around the city. It's on there on Bourbon Street.
12:15I've been there. It looks just, you know, they are in these real places. And I think more than just, well, it looks good. It's like, look, this is a movie about travel and the allure of travel and wanting to go to these beautiful destinations. And you are giving schlubs like us who are too lazy to even go to the movie theater to watch something. You're giving us kind of the vicarious thrill of going to these places while sitting, you know, in our homes, you know, not even having to get off the couch to be entertained. Yeah, we are. We're on the slippery slope to the WALL-E people. I mean, we're we're getting there faster and faster every moment.
12:59But I think but I think that the movie is very well calculated in that way. It's well shot. Yeah, I and half of it is very well performed. I do agree. Tom Blythe is not he doesn't bring much to this movie. And I think if there is a problem here there, if there is a thing that holds me back from saying this is a very good movie. it is the fact that I did find myself quite a lot thinking, this woman is so vivacious. She is, you know, she's beautiful and charming and smart. She's got a lot going on here. And I just like, what does she like this doorstop for? Well, did you see him with his shirt off?
13:40Come on. Other than, yeah, yes. You know, when he has, when there's a forced skinny dipping scene, he's a good looking guy. but he's not I mean I don't know I just felt like no she deserves much better than him he's a big block of concrete but it's not really about him it's about her and she it's a great movie because it gives the woman all the funny lines she's hilarious I mean that's a fair point yes it does invert what is the typical structure of this sort of thing it's when Harry met Sally upside down I mean she so much so that the opening is ripped off the opening is I mean it really is This is when, I mean, my wife has already seen this movie.
14:21She's actually a fan of the author. I don't know if she's read all of Emily Henry's books, but she's read a bunch of them. She reads like one every year. And, you know, so she kind of had already watched this without me, did not ask if I wanted to watch it. She just took it on herself to watch this because she was very excited because she had read the book and read other books by Emily Henry. But when she saw I was watching it, we were talking about it. And anyway, I'm rambling on here, but she made it very clear this was not one of the best books. Oh, she her favorite of the books is Funny Story.
14:56OK. And she didn't she love she did like the book. She thought the movie was OK. Oh, she did. She was glad to hear when we were looking online that Emily Henry is going to be adapting her own novel next time. She felt the adaptation perhaps was it didn't quite capture all the flavor. That's fair enough. You know, the story is secondary. The locations are where it's at, and it's her. It's Emily Bader as Poppy. You know, when we're talking about the hiring at Sally, I mean, the first scene in hiring at Sally is they're sharing a ride in college, and Billy Crystal's character makes a mess of food in Meg Ryan's car, right?
15:36He spits grape seeds out the window, but the window is still closed. And in this, he's driving and she's almost the exact and she gets like, I don't know, tzatziki sauce. So she's eating a gyro or something and she gets it all over the car. It's the same exact thing. But so I'm already kind of laughing because she's a beautiful woman, but she's kind of goofy looking. And I don't mean that like on part like they she's a diminutive gal. And, you know, she even says, like, I'm five one and all spunk or something like that. I mean, she's she's a funny looking woman, but but gorgeous. and then she has this line early on where they have to call triple a because the car breaks down because she did something wrong she locks the car the keys inside because she's a you know she's a manic pixie dream girl and she uh he's she's just trying to make him laugh and she says when triple a locks their car who do they call quadruple a and this is the dumbest joke like that was that That was when she stole your heart forever.
16:32Oh, forget it. One of your daughters could come up with that joke. It's a young person's silly joke, you know? I mean, your daughters are very elevated in there. Yeah, my daughters, they love AAA. They use it all the time. We got them their own membership cards. My point is - Daddy, daddy, can I call AAA this time? No, honey, you've called them four times this week. Please. The point is, it's a dumb joke, but she sells it, and it's great. And here's what I find interesting. And I think I've already established that I have a little bit of a crush on this actress. Really? I couldn't get that at all.
17:05It was not at all clear. Attractive, usually, people who are very funny are not all so good looking. This was always my problem with Ben Stiller, who's a handsome man. Like, you know, he's Zoolander because you could pass as a model, but he's also funny. Like, Will Ferrell is funny and he could not pass as a model. No disrespect to Will Ferrell, you know? And that's why he plays the design, the fashion design. Exactly. By the way, Matt, is there a book coming out later this year that touches upon movies like Zoolander? And it's funny that you mentioned that not just like Zoolander, but Zoolander has a whole chapter featured in the book Funny Business that I wrote.
17:45Coming to bookstores on October 6th, available for preorder now. Good, good, good. Okay, so my point is, it is kind of a home run when they're truly gifted comics, but also can play, and we're going to discuss this later in a different segment, can also be leading performers in their own right. I mean, Lucille Ball, have you ever seen Lucille Ball when she's not on I Love Lucy in a real movie? Wasn't she in the Ashfall Jungle, right? Isn't she in the Ashfall Jungle or something like that? I haven't seen, I don't, if I've seen that, I don't remember it. Wasn't she in the original Yours, Mine, and Ours?
18:25Well, yes, yes. But that's a goofy movie. But no, she plays, she's in a classic, Sam's going to come up with the, he's Googling right now. She's in a classic Hollywood noir playing like, if I may, a sexy dame. I mean, in the parlance of noirs. And it's pretty impressive, you know, because you don't expect it from Lucille Ball. I forget which movie it is but um the point i wanted to make about this movie is it it's just uh pretty laugh a minute i mean like because she's just always doing goofy stuff like she's at the airport picking up her bags and she's like in her head she's got her headphones on and she's singing singing a rap song loses track of where she is and then you cut to reality you cut to reality and she's acting like a maniac in right in public but like in the movie it's cool because it's cut to the music.
19:15So that's like a funny. The slab of raw raw meat walks up behind her and he's like, what are you doing? And he brains on her parade again. Exactly. Yes, you're right. She is, you know, I guess if he was also being silly, there may have been a may have been, you know, too much wackety schmack. Yeah, I guess that's fair to say. I just felt like he doesn't need to be funny. He just needs to be something. Yeah. And I really he really doesn't give us a lot here. He's, you know, I guess I just, I was like, what does she see in this guy besides the abs? Because he doesn't really like to travel. He doesn't like doing anything.
19:53He needs a schedule at all times. Yeah. And I understand what his, I can see why he finds her.

I know it's a fait accompli. I know it's going to happen anyway. I just, I needed a little bit more emotional chemistry.
23:51When they finally start smooching towards the end of this movie, they definitely have physical chemistry. Yeah. But I wanted more emotional chemistry, if that is a thing. Yeah. I mean, I'm looking at my notes and I'm like, is he supposed to be like a dork or not? Like, is he a John? This is a great question. What is he? What is he? Yeah. What kind of a guy is he? We really have. It's a hard time. It's funny because, again, I was talking after I watched the movie. My wife asked me what I thought. And I told her exactly what we're saying. We both agreed. She's great. He's kind of bland. And I was like, he's kind of like me, but just like if I worked out a lot.
24:30And she gave me a look that said, you're giving yourself far too much credit. You know, cut that out. But she didn't disagree. She didn't disagree that there is kind of a personality imbalance here. Yeah. It's not ruinous. It doesn't, you know, it doesn't like tip the whole movie over into unsuccessful. Yeah. But in my mind, it keeps the movie from being, obviously a lot of people watched and liked this movie. If it's the fourth most logged movie on Letterboxd, a lot of people watch it and like it. And I liked it. It got good word of mouth. I mean, it's just like it's a nice thing. I don't know that this is a movie that is going to become this generation's When Harry Met Sally.
25:10Where I feel like if the cast had been a little more balanced in the way that Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan kind of find that balance. that actually this movie could have been like kind of an instant classic, you know, the rom-com of its generation. Yeah, and if there were more creative, like the individual scenes, I mean, we've touched on the locations, but like what they do there, like they go to New Orleans and they dance, you know, like it's not like, there aren't that many. That's a good scene though. It's a good scene, but there aren't that many creative. They are pretending for the benefit of another couple that they are newlyweds.

25:43And again, he's a stiff, he doesn't want to do anything. And she convinces him to dance with her and come out of his shell a little bit. And we finally do see a little bit of personality. And they have, you know, again, they have the physical chemistry. It's a nice little scene. I will say I also do want to compliment. I haven't read the book, but I do think that the structure here is very elegant. The way that it is structured around these vacations that these people have taken. The movie is set in the present, but it constantly flashes back nine summers ago. seven summers ago. And there are these questions about, you know, in the present, they're not together and they're sort of there.
26:22They have this tension. Yeah. And over the course of the movie, you reveal little by little how, you know, things about them on each of these vacations. I think the structure works very well. It's a very clever conceit. And there's even a little bit of a twist because when at the beginning you think, oh, they're exes. But then you learn, no, they were just best friends, platonic. And then. Yes. things lost in the friend zone lost in the friend zone and then something happened that tore them apart and they haven't been speaking for a while and then they they uh in the present they are forced to come back together because his brother is getting married in barcelona or something and the brother wants her at the wedding yeah exactly um yeah so it's uh it's it's uh it's funny i mean it kind of reminded me of um you know i was thinking about the relationship as you were talking it's like um not to break everything back to star trek but uh star trek lower decks right beckett mariner is like wacky and funny and you just and she's just like adorable and then brad wood boimler who is his her platonic best friend has he's definitely she's in charge but he has his own character traits um and in in this movie it's like they're almost at the mariner boimler level of like best friends.
27:38I know I'm speaking to a very, very small group. The Mariner Boimer level. You haven't watched Star Trek Lower Decks, have you? I think that was the name of a band I saw in college. I could swear that I saw them play at a bar. So you know who else she reminded me of as I was jotting down this performance? It was like, imagine if Charlie Day and Diane Keaton were to get caught in the fly machine. Like that's what this actress is like, her performance anyhow. Not her looks, but her... Right. Yes. No, I understand what you're saying. Yeah. Sort of the mix of the Brundle fly of their personalities.
28:11And I'm sure she would be incredibly pleased to hear that. Hear you compare her that way. Absolutely. The other funny thing is there are a lot of scenes where like exposition dumps happen, like when two women are working out. Like I've seen that a lot. Also happens on Star Trek. The Next Generation. Very famous. Oh, my gosh. Dr. Kresher. But this one was done when they're out like a cycling class. Yeah. And like the instructors screaming at them. And it was just very, very clever. I mean, that that scene, but they brought the heat to that one. It's like, how do we do this, this cliche moment? And where do we sprinkle a little a little hot sauce on this?
28:50And they did a very, very, very funny job in that scene. I guess as we're wrapping up, I do want to say that I appreciate that in your introduction, you singled out one of the strangest and most shameless like we're gonna make it sexy moments in any recent movie i can think of where yes they are in this like sweltering barcelona apartment yes and um you know they're having this kind of heated argument no pun intended and she like rips there's like plastic sheeting there's no air conditioning in the apartment she's not like an airbnb or because she's a travel writer and the AC is broken and they're doing...
29:30They're working on the HVAC unit? What's happening? I couldn't follow this. They're doing some kind of reconstruction on the house so she can't go out on the balcony. So instead there's like a big plastic sheet, but it looks like Dexter was there killing somebody, you know? Like it's very weird. So there's She like knifes through some plastic sheeting. She's like, I must have air because the tension is so thick. Of course she wants to hop this guy. She's like Dick Van Patten And space balls. Yes, she's like, I must have air. So she busts out onto the balcony and then the skies open up. I mean, this is not.
30:05I mean, it's such a baffling thing. Well, I mean, I don't have to get into what this symbolizes, the moisture from the heat in the body. I have no idea what you're talking about. But it all comes flooding out. It's very funny to me. Thank you. It's just very funny to me because, yes, she like has she like dramatically rips open this sheeting. And then she's outside on like a, it almost feels like it's like a construction site, you know, like scaffolding. I forget what they're called. She's on the lanai. But there's no roof. It's like there's no covering. And so they're just instantly drenched.
30:38Yeah. Moist, as you put it. Yeah. It's just very, it feels so manipulatively forced. Ridiculous. But it's so ridiculous. And it just, honestly, it made, it was so unsubtle. And it just, it did make me smile. And a lot of this movie did make me smile. I liked it. It's easily the most I have enjoyed anything we have watched for episodes for the show. I know that's damning with fame praise. Yeah. But but it is. And I think we've already talked enough that we should table this discussion for another time. But one thing I the last thing I want to mention that I did think about was and we've mentioned how this is like a star making turn for this young actress.
31:16And it does seem to me, though, that there's a lot of people who have had breakouts in Netflix originals in recent years. Yeah. I think that's something that's interesting that maybe we could do a whole segment on an episode about. It's like the people that have done that and why that seems to be a thing on Netflix specifically lately. Oh, because it's the number one streaming service. It's the one people talk about. Maybe it is. I have been, I hate to kvetch here on FilmSpotting SVU, but I am currently going three times a week to physical therapy because I have a herniated disc in my neck, which is very painful.
31:53And I go to physical therapy. And what do you do in physical therapy? You sit there and you listen to the people Yenta in the room. What are you watching? What are you watching? I do great market research for the streaming services all the time. And the number one thing is, oh, it's on Netflix. This is one on Netflix. Sometimes they talk about Apple. That's number two. You never hear about Hulu. You never hear about HBO Max. Apple is number two. That's interesting. At least at this particular place where I go. You do get physical therapy in Cupertino. We should have mentioned that. But, you know, Matt Singer, you mentioned Breakout Stars and how you were unfamiliar with Emily Bader.
32:30And now we both are great fans. Is it time to talk Rex Egg and talk about movies related that are inspired by this film that we can suggest to our listeners? I think we should get into that. But just before we do, we should just reiterate to people. The film is people we meet on vacation. If the listeners are not one of the 51 million people who've watched it on Netflix so far, that is where you can find it on Netflix. Well, goodbye, everybody. I got to catch a six o 'clock train. And thanks for everything and, you know, the shower and all. And if any of you hams happen to come up to Seattle, the House of Millbanks is always open to you.
33:11By the way, it was not Asphalt Jungle. It was Stage Door. I'm talking about Lucille Ball when you kind of pre... Before she was wacky, dizzy Lucy, she was in Stage Door, which is a Hitchcock film. And you watch it now and you go, oh, my God, that's Lucille Ball. Sam, put that in the chat. Thank you, Sam. So busy yapping to you, I wasn't looking at the chat. So there you go. Now we're going to get into Rex Egg, R-E-X-E-G-G. That's not how it's spelled. What's going on in this week's Rex Egg? Well, again, as we do every week here, we review a movie, and in this case it was People We Meet on Vacation.
33:50But we understand that we have listeners out there who might want more than just a review of People We Meet on Vacation. Maybe you're one of those 51 million people you already watched it before we ever reviewed it. Maybe you actually prefer to read your beach reads instead of watching them as frothy Netflix rom-coms. Maybe you saw Tom Blythe in The Hunger Games, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and you'll never forgive him for the horrors that Coriolanus Snow inflicted on Pen-M, and thus the thought of watching him in said frothy romantic comedy violates your rigid moral code. as is your right.
34:29For you and for so many others, we present... Rexag! Yeah! Rexag!
34:39Rexag! Rexag! Our weekly suggestions of alternative streaming ideas based on our feature review, based on stuff Jordan and I have watched in our private lives over the last week, and as we have already mentioned, some personalized recommendations. But look, Just because you're not the one person doesn't mean you can't watch it. It's not, you know, there's no law that says only that one person can watch the recommendation. Anybody could watch it. What are you talking about? I don't know. All right. Let's get to our related recommendations that connect back to our film. You want to go first? I'm so excited about this.
35:21I really truly am. Star Trek Lower Decks. No, no, no. As has been established, I have a great fondness for the talented Emily Bader. And I said, who the hell is this gal? Why have I never seen her in anything? And I went to her Wikipedia page, as you said you did as well. And she is a newcomer. She hasn't done that much. She's been on, she's done some TV. She was on a show called Charmed, which I guess is a, wasn't there a Charmed in the 90s? I guess it's a remake of Charmed. Yeah, it was a witch's charm. Yeah, yeah. Was there a reboot? Was there a Lego sequel? There was a Lego reboot. She was in Charmed.
35:57She did five episodes of Charmed. Mazel tov to her. A bunch of other TV shows I'd never heard of. And she's only been in three motion pictures. People We Meet on Vacation. Her first feature film was a paranormal activity, a paranormal activity colon next of kin, which I did not know existed. I think that was the one that went straight to Paramount+. Okay, there you go. So no one knows it existed. Yeah. But here's the thing. Matt Singer and the listeners, red alert. she was in fact the star of a movie i adore and i did not realize it was her she is the star of a movie called fresh kills which came out in 2023 fresh kills is written and directed as an independent film pretty low budget written and directed by jennifer esposito better known for being in a lot of tv shows i don't watch like blue bloods and ncis it's set in the 1980s and it is one of the most innovative mafia dramas i've seen in a really long time because really it's all about the imagine if the movie was just about meadow soprano and how meadow soprano is slowly becoming aware that Her dad is a mafia guy, which is an arc in The Sopranos, but it's like arc number 12.
37:21Imagine if it's the whole movie. Now, the Meadow Soprano in Fresh Kills is played by our new favorite actress, Emily Bader. She's the lead. She plays Rose. And she has an older sister named Connie. And Connie was another actress who, at the time, I didn't realize who she was. Now I know it was Odessa Azayan, who's fantastic in Marty Supreme. So imagine the two sisters. What a titanic combo. This is kind of like when people started going back to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and realizing that every great young actress was in that before we knew who they were. Right. This is Fresh Kills. Now, the father is Dominic Lombardozzi, who is one of these guys who's in everything.
38:04From The Wire. Yeah, from The Wire. Yeah, Herc from The Wire. Annabella Sciorra is the aunt. Aunt Chrissy. And Jennifer Esposito is in it as well. she plays the mom and what's great about the movie it really is quite good um because the main character she's like a good girl she loves her family and she's slowly realizing her dad is a mobster and and set in the 80s also in staten island now fresh kills if you sounds like a mafia fresh kills you know but it's actually the name of a place it's in staten island kills means river in um kill means river in dutch and new york city in staten island was originally new amsterdam And there are a lot of places in Staten Island that are called like the Fresh Kills and Dutch Kills and Kill Van Kull and all this stuff.
38:50But French Kills was famous in the in the 80s and 90s because it was a garbage dump. Literally. I don't mean that figure. I mean, it was truly it was the stinkiest place on Earth. And you would drive through it on your way from New Jersey to New York City. And it would it would your eyes would start tearing because of all the smell. They've gotten rid of it now. And this plays a major factor in the film, symbolically and also just funnily, because they're like, oh, it smells here, because they moved from Brooklyn to Staten Island. What I love about the movie is that it's not about the mob. It's about these characters, and the mob hits, and we're going to whack this guy.
39:30That's all off screen. You don't hear any of that. But the two daughters, they're given the front. Like, you know, in The Sopranos, they have the bottom bing, and they got the pork store, which are fronts for the mafia. In this, the dad's like, I'm going to let you girls run a bakery. And they don't know how to run a bakery, but they're put in charge of running a bakery. And they don't, they're like too, they got their head, they're willfully ignorant about the fact that this is a mafia front. They're a restaurant, or not a restaurant, they're a store. Cohen? Yeah? Is dad an honest man? What?
40:09An honest man. Would you get that from Rose? Did your friend ask you that? What'd you say? You stood up for him, right? A man that gives you everything, you stood up for him. You said something, right? It's just great. So it's really very clever movie that is well put together. And the details, I mean, just the clothing, the use of the music. it's real i mean i grew up in the in the 80s and 90s in in central new jersey which is basically staten island uh i i don't think i had any friends and neighbors that were in the mafia but i certainly had a lot of italian america my block was all jews and italian americans that's it i never met a protestant till i went to college it was all it was all jews all italian americans and one family that was half black Chinese.
41:06That was the block. It was a very, I grew up thinking that was everybody's block with all the Jews, Italians, and Jeremy Wong who was half black and half Chinese. I thought that was it. But it turns out that America is a great cultural stew of lots of things, including Protestants. So anyway, but the point I'm making is there were music cues. There were the way these women talk, the hairstyles, the radio, the ads on the radio. was like, oh my God, I remember that beauty parlor. It was, it's so, and cause she's a, you know, Jenna Esposito's around my age. She grew up in Staten Island. She really nailed it.
41:40I love this movie. It's one of the great undersea movies. And guess what, listeners? You can stream it for free on Hulu. Hello, hello, Hulu. If you have the Hulu, it's free. If you don't have Hulu, it's$3.99 on Amazon, $3.99 on Apple. Okay. By the way - You've sold me, Jordan. I have not seen this movie. and with that cast and your sterling recommendation I am going to watch this movie good you're going to love it by the way it was Gregory LaCava not Hitchcock yes I was going to point that yes Hitchcock made stage door no Hitchcock made stage fright leave me alone it was one of these you can understand my confusion Hitchcock made stage fright but Gregory LaCava made stage door with Ginger Rogers, Katherine Hepburn and and now you can exit stage left with all this...
42:30Tell me what your Rex Egg is. Yes, I would love to. Is it streamings and snakes? Songbirds and snakes? No, mine is not Tom Blythe. I had enough Tom Blythe. For my related rec, I was thinking about picking a recent romantic comedy just because this is a good one and, you know, so if you enjoyed this movie, you know, that's a good starting point and my wife loves romantic comedies.
45:34We watch a lot of them. But as I was looking, because the great Sam Van Halgren made that letterboxed list of all the titles we've discussed that are now all available on our favorite streaming service, Bazooka, I realized I haven't really recommended anything that's older than like 2023 so far. So I wanted something a little older. I wanted to dip back a little bit. And when I started to think about older movies, about romance, about men and women not quite knowing what they want while they're in these beautiful places, which is a very prevalent theme in People We Meet on Vacation, I thought of Eric Romare, the French New Wave filmmaker known for his films about relationships.
46:18I am not an expert on the French New Wave. I've seen, you know, if you showed me the syllabus for French New Wave 101, I've seen them all. If you showed me the syllabus for French New Wave 201, the single bead of sweat is going to start traveling down my forehead. I missed a lot. So I actually only got into Romare in the last few years. I had a rare night where my wife's asleep. The kids are asleep. I don't have anything I need to watch for work. Like I don't have to. And I'm I it's when I have that, which is like once every three months. What I always do is I go to my list of like the great movies that I've never seen or I go to like the BFI top 100 and I look for something I've never watched.
47:03And on this particular night, I watched my night at mods and I absolutely loved it. And now I'm on a streak where anytime I have a night like that, I watch a Romare movie. I haven't gotten through a lot yet, but he's like my new guy. So the thing I'm going to recommend is actually a short because as we have established on SVU, good movies are good. Short movies are great. And so, you know, My Night at Mauds is part of a cycle of movies that Romare made that are called The Six Moral Tales. they're all available on the Criterion collection and the first of said Moral Tales is only 23 minutes long it is The Bakery Girl of Monceau from 1963 never saw this one there you go well now you can on the Criterion channel and in its own little 23 minute way it is just about perfect it's filmed on the streets of Paris narrated almost from start to finish by the main character who is a law student who becomes bewitched by this beautiful woman.
48:10He passes constantly walking on the street and he becomes fixated on her. He figures out a way to kind of engineer what appears to her to be a very chance meeting and introduces himself. They start talking. He asks for a date. She says, no, but next time I see you. And then the woman vanishes. And the hero, the student, wanders Paris looking for her. He can't find her. And as he's wandering, day after day, he starts frequenting this bakery where the food is not good. But the cashier, the shop girl, always seems to kind of flirt with him a little bit when he comes in to buy cookies. Should he pursue this woman or should he remain?
48:56And I'm saying this with air quotes for our listeners. Should he remain faithful to the to the first woman? And structurally, this is very similar to the other moral tales, which if you've never watched any of them, I think the the criterion collection description of them is that they are a succession of encounters between fragile men and the women who tempt them. Wow. They are gently existential, hyper articulate character studies set against vivid seasonal landscapes, which actually sounds a lot like people we meet on vacation. It sure does. Yeah. Yes. So and this absolutely fits into it, into that kind of mold.
49:37Aesthetically, we are in prime French new wave territory. There's no sets. There's not even that many interiors apart from maybe the bakery, which was a real bakery that they shot in. And there's kind of a documentary quality to all the footage of the main character kind of just wandering around Paris. Is it in black and white? It is in black and white, yes. The main character, interestingly, played by two future filmmakers. Physically, he's embodied by Barbe Schroeder. And he's voiced by Bertrand Tavernier. So two different people are portraying this guy wandering around Paris. Basically no extras.
50:14Basically no lighting. No nothing. But it's not a documentary. There are these striking jump cuts. The plot, as simple as it is, has these wonderful twists, some very wry kind of ironic humor. And there is that narration, which is constant. And it's giving us the subjective point of view of this lead character and giving us a window into this guy's very neurotic, very obnoxiously male point of view. he says at one point to his buddy as they are sitting in a cafe smoking and being very French and this woman walks by that they're both looking at and they're talking about her she says she's ignoring us too intently not to have noticed us which is maybe the most demented and gross and male thing that's ever been uttered in a single sentence but that said it is not about necessarily bashing this guy A woman could say that, too, about men.
51:11He's ignoring me too much. I could see that going. All genders could say such a thing. All genders are disgusting. Maybe we disagree on this, perhaps. But in any event, I love the way that Romare treats this character, all the characters. He's not passing judgment on them, which is ironic because it's the six moral tales. But they're not really like morality tales, like you're supposed to learn a lesson. It's more like a it's about more morality and kind of how ordinary people grapple with choices in their heads, how they almost justify to themselves the choices that they make. Very good. And again, I put this on this weekend for 23 minutes.
51:54I was transported to 1960s Paris. Wow. It was romantic. It was beautiful. And the bakeries were obnoxious. It's great. Can I tell you and the listeners my favorite French bakery story? This is kind of funny. Can you tell it in less than 18 minutes? I can tell it in two minutes. Okay, go. As you know, the boulangeries à Paris, the French bakeries are very famous. And every time a shlobby American like me goes to France and comes back and says, how was Paris? Oh, my God, the food, the bread. Why is the bread so good there? Why is the bread so good there? And it's true. I've been lucky enough to go to France several times, and every time I go to France, I'm just shoving bread in my face.
52:38One time, my wife and I were in Montmartre, which is the—you go up a hill, and there's a famous church there. It's a part of Paris, and we're walking around, and we're getting lost in Montmartre, and it's very romantic. Is that where John Wick has the big fight on the stairs? Isn't that where it is? Probably. There's a staircase with a white church, probably, yeah. Yeah. So then I'm a very cultured man and I have very classy. I go all the way from Eric Romare to John Wick. You did. You whipped out the six moral tales. You get at least two John Wicks now as a result. Okay, fantastic. So we're walking around Montmartre.
53:13We're strolling arm in arm. Jordan, I hate to interrupt, but I'm afraid that the country of France has filed a legal injunction against you from any more exaggerated French pronunciations. Montmartre? I don't know. Je ne sais. Okay, sorry. So we're strolling around. We're ambling. And remember now, we've already been in Paris for days, and I'm just going, why is the bread so good here? Why is the bread so good? And then what's that smell? Oh, my God. We're near a bakery. Oh, it's got to be just around this corner. So we're walking. We're walking. We're in a little – it's almost like we're away.
53:45We're off the beaten path. And so it's just got to be around this corner. It's just got to be around the corner. And it's like – remember, Yogi Bear would, like, smell the smell, the fruit. Follow the pie. Yeah, yeah. He would follow it. Flying in the air almost. I was hovering across the streets of Montmartre. And we finally round the corner. And what do I see? It's a Subway. Subway sandwiches. I swear to you this is true. And I'm going, what the hell? Is this just like when you're on vacation, you just think that the food is so much better? Or is it that the French, who are a little bit weird, no, it's a Subway, but we will make the bread ourselves.
54:23Could it be that they were baking their own bread there and it was so good? I'll never know. You didn't go in? No, I was so embarrassed. I was so humiliated. And was it called Subway or was it called Metro? It was the yellow sign, you know, the$5 foot, the five franc foot long, the whole thing. The Subway. Oui, oui. And it was so embarrassing because, and again, I was in such, I was Yogi Baring. I was like away from my wife. I rounded the corner before her and I had to turn back around in shame and be like, forget it. And she's like, you found the bakery? I'm like, no, it's a Subway. So I don't know.
54:57But yes, Eric Romare, I've seen many of his, I was just looking, of the six moral tales I've seen four. So I'm going to, I might as well round out and do the six. And he's made a lot of great movies. He did, later in his career, he did four films that, one is called like Tale of Spring, Tale of Summer. Yes, the six seasons, four seasons, excuse me. And I don't, this is the dumbest, one of those four is really, really good. I forget which one. I haven't watched any of them yet, but those are like my next targets. One of them is set on a vineyard. Whichever one is set on a vineyard is like really good.
55:32The short, if you do want to just watch this one, it is the first of the six chronologically. They're not connected plot-wise in any way. You could watch them in any order you choose. But if you want to start with the shortest one, it's this one, The Bakery Girl of Monceau. It's on Criterion Channel. They have all six moral tales if you want to really do a deep dive. Some of them, though, are on, like, I think I watched My Night at Mods on HBO Max. Some of them are over there, too. So you don't just, it's not a Criterion Channel exclusive recommendation, I suppose. All right. Sam, coming in, the Vineyard one is Tale of Autumn.
56:07So there you go. Tale of Autumn. Okay. I mean, they're all, he loves a beautiful setting where guys and gals, they don't know what they want. And they're talking and they're beautiful and they're drinking wine. I mean, what's not to like? So, hey, Matt, we got a couple of emails from listeners this week, and we're going to hold on to some of them. But one of them was from a fellow by the name of Michael Brantner. And Michael Brantner wrote to us, hey, guys, I have just seen the taking of Pelham 123 on Amazon Prime in Germany, which, how do you say prime? Don't, we already have one country man in us.
56:46Let's not go for the double. So he said, he loved it. Of course he loved Taking a Pelham 1, 2, 3, because it's perfect. And he said, if you don't know Taking a Pelham 1, 2, 3, the 70s movie where bad guys take over the subway is in New York City in the 1970s. It's so good. And the ultimate action hero of them all, Walter Matthau. Everybody's in this movie. Robert Shaw, Hector Elizondo, Walter Matthau. What's his name? Martin Balsam. Oh, my God. It's so good. So he says, is there anything else that you could recommend a perfect genre film, The Next on the Service? So what do you recommend to our friend Michael?
57:26Yes, yes. And thank you, Michael. Thank you for the email. Now, yes, he specifically mentioned The Taking of Pelham 123, one of the great New York movies. I'm assuming it was the Walter Matthau. There is a remake of it. There was with Denzel, and it's not Denzel. John Travolta, I think, was the bad guy. Because it's Tony Scott. That's why I thought it was. It's Tony Scott. It's not horrible, but the original is beyond reproof. The remake is not good. But look, here's what I'm going to say. While you're looking this up, I'm going to say this. Michael did mention he watched this on Prime Video in Germany.
58:03That is an extra wrinkle. The murky web of international rights deals. It's something that we don't really wade into much on SVU, at least not yet. Figuring out what is streaming in the United States is hard enough. Doing it for every territory overseas would be very, very difficult. But I wanted to help Michael here. I actually went to the Prime Video in Germany website. And I looked through what was available there. And I wanted to at least give a title that I was sure he would be able to watch. And that's why I'm picking Balls Up from Peter Farrelly. No, I'm kidding. I'm kidding. Actually, what I'm going to recommend is a different recent Amazon movie.
58:46Oh. So it should be available to anyone who uses Amazon Prime anywhere in the world. At least I'm going to assume so. My pick is called Crime 101, which is a lot closer to Michael Mann's Heat than it is to The Taking of Pelham 123. But I like this movie way more than I expected to. And I think if you appreciate taking a Pelham one, two, three for kind of the New York grit and authenticity, I think you'll appreciate the love and care that went into this movie in terms of its Los Angeles setting. It's set in L.A. It also has a dogged cop who's kind of in the Walter Matthau mold a little bit. It's played by Mark Ruffalo.
59:27I don't know if he would like to be compared to Walter Matthau, but there is a bit of a dogged and rumpled quality to him in certain things and certainly in this movie. He also plays kind of like he's a bit of a kind of source of comic relief as well. He takes yoga classes in in in this film, which becomes a surprisingly important subplot without spoiling too much about that. The main character, though, is played by Chris Hemsworth. He is a classic movie thief of a kind that I I guess exists in real life. But I but it's such a movie, almost a cliche. The hyper proficient gentleman thief. He thinks of every angle.
1:00:08He uses violence as a last resort. He only targets the wealthy who can afford to lose whatever it is that he wants. His plans are perfect. He's so OCD that he scrapes off his dead skin into a tarp before a heist. So he won't leave DNA at the crime scene. Wow. That's the kind of guy we're talking about here. And he works off tips that are given to him by Nick Dolte. But when he refuses one assignment because it's too risky, remember, he doesn't want to take any risks. Right. He gives that assignment to this other thief who is a far more reckless kid played by Barry Keegan. And that kind of begins like the dominoes begin to fall on Chris Hemsworth's carefully protected life.
1:00:51And that's how Mark Ruffalo begins to solve the case. You're looking at robberies of jewels, money, or high-value items in the last four years. Now, remove every robbery where there was DNA left at the scene. I think all of these are the same guy. And he hits every time along the 101 freeway. I have not mentioned a single female character. I was going to say, are there any women in this movie? There are two important women in the movie that actually are a substantial part of the film. Halle Berry is this insurance salesman whose clients make juicy targets because they're rich and they have all these fancy things.
1:01:40So that's an important character. And then Hemsworth, because, of course, he's such a he's a guy with such a monastic lifestyle. Of course, he's going to fall in love with a woman he meets by accident. She's played by Monica Barbaro. Oh, time out. I love her. Oh. Oh. She's from FUBAR. Yes, she played Arnold's daughter on FUBAR. She was also nominated for an Academy Award, I believe, for the Bob Dylan movie. But I know her from FUBAR. But more importantly, FUBAR. Yeah, she's great. Yes. By the way, so you mentioned Halle Berry, by the way. She is much like Charlize is Netflix's go-to gal. Halle Berry is Amazon's gal.
1:02:23She was in the god-awful Mark Wahlberg picture, The Union, where she was like the head of - I didn't make it all the way through that movie. She was like the head of the CIA of The Union. She's the head of The Union. I mean, The Union is a ripoff of Kingsman. All it was like, can we do Kingsman America style? And instead of making it classy guys in little suits and being very British, it's like, hey, I'm Mark Wahlberg and I'm in The Union. Hey, it's awful. but Halle Berry's in that too so I would have to imagine that there's some kind of deal going on anyhow continue with what you were saying yes yeah the union gave me the nap that's what happened when I tried to watch the union but Crime 101 I think is very nicely done whole cast is excellent writer-director Bart Layton whose other movies include The Impostor and American Animals does a very good job crafting a very efficient thriller much like his main character very efficient and effective and not the most original film again it feels very much like Like Amazon came to him or to someone and said, we want our own heat.
1:03:25We don't want to license heat anymore. People love heat. They love to watch heat on streaming. We don't want to pay Warner Brothers to license it. Can you make us our own heat that we can own forever? And here you go, Crime 101. It's streaming on Amazon Prime Video in Germany, in America. And I would assume just about anywhere you can subscribe to Prime. And as Jordan says, if you can get movies along with your paper towel deliveries. So that's my recommendation for Michael. I hope you haven't seen it yet, but you do watch it and like it. There you go. Very good. What about you? What do you what do you have?
1:04:02Well, listen, the taking of Pelham one, two, three is is a masterpiece. It's a very clever heist film. And, you know, the look and feel can never be replicated so much so that Tony Scott tried. and failed. But part of what makes it so great is what you touched on immediately, because you never think of him as an action hero. It's Walter Matthau, and he's the head of the subway police or some nonsense like that. I don't know what he is, but he's like running around as the subway guy. And we should say it was Denzel. You were correct. You second guess yourself. It's both. It's Denzel versus Travolta.
1:04:40Yeah. So Denzel is the Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw is the John Travolta plays a Robert Shaw character and by the way Quentin Tarantino stole directly from taking Pelham 123 when in Reservoir Dogs when he gave everybody the name Mr. Pink Mr. Blue, Mr. Green, Mr. White that comes directly from Pelham when all the bad guys have Mr. Blue, Mr. Red, whatever so anyway the point I'm trying to make is this, if not now when let's talk about Walter Matthau one of the most important people in my life and and let's talk about truly one of the greatest film performances ever made and it is on amazon it's not a it's not a subscribing thing you got to pay 399 so in germany maybe it's two euros and 42 euro cents but it's um but my math singer let me quiz you what is the greatest walter mathow performance oh man uh go big go big go huge go big go huge i mean i would probably say that i i love the fortune cookie i don't think that's what you're gonna say no the fortune cookie is not as good is very good but it's not as important to me as the sunshine boys the sunshine boys is okay is one of the funniest movies ever made you're old-fashioned i'm still new fashion i'm still in demand i'm still hot if this room was on fire you wouldn't be hot The Sunshine Boys was originally a play written by Neil Simon.
1:06:13And the movie is very much a filmed play. But it is about two old vaudevillians who are at the end of their lives. And it's in the 1970s. And their nephew is a television producer and is putting together like a nostalgia variety show and tries to get his uncle, Walter Matthau's uncle, to reunite with his old comedy partner. who have been split up for decades, much like, say, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were split up for decades. In this case, it's in the movie, it's Walter Matthau and George Burns. And George Burns, who won the Oscar for this film, is kind of the straight man. And Walter Matthau is the maniac.
1:06:53He's the Costanza. And Burns was quite old when they made this film and Matthau was not. They put him in old age makeup, but he's perfect. And the nephew is played by Richard Benjamin. And the film was directed by Herbert Ross, who originally was a Broadway dancer and then he was a Broadway director. And then he made some very good movies in his career. Not as perfect as The Sunshine Boys, but his other films include he did the movie version of Play It Again, Sam, which was the Woody Allen play that Woody Allen is in, but did not direct. Everybody thinks Woody Allen directed it. he directed The Last of Sheila, which is a very funny comedy.
1:07:34If you like Knives Out, you love The Last of Sheila. It's a very funny comedy whodunit, which also has Richard Benjamin in it and others. And Rian Johnson is a self-avowed Last of Sheila fan. Oh, yeah. It's so good. And he also did The Goodbye Girl, which won Richard Dreyfuss the Oscar. And that was written by Neil Simon also. So he made quite a lot of good movies back in the day. um anyhow but the sunshine boys the the the central piece the reason for this movie existing is um these old these old borscht belt comedians are have to get back together to do their famous act for this tv special and you know but of course they're bickering the whole way and it's like can the nephew keep them from bickering just long enough to film this for the TV special.
1:08:26And the act is an old shtick called, it's a sketch called The Doctor Will See You Now. That is the sketch. And it's like a five or six minute hokey sketch that Neil Simon, who of course made his bones writing TV comedy back in the fifties, he wrote for Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows. His colleagues were Larry Gelbart, Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, and other writers who were just as zany but not as famous um he channeled all of his skills all everything he learned from those early days of comedies he concentrated into these five minutes of the doctor will see you now sketch and it is the stupidest funniest five minutes ever put to film ever it kills me every single time and it's walter matthew and george burns just volleying, but like, I don't know, who's the greatest tennis player that ever lived?
1:09:26I don't know. Pete Sampras. They're smashing each other with jokes. One right after the other, bam, bam, bang, volleying. And there's this, the nurse character. I don't want to get into that. I'll get canceled if I talk about her too much, but it's, it's just an amazing piece of movie making. And, uh, and the rest of the movie is just all, and it's why Walter Matthau is beloved. I mean, I don't know to what extent people know this movie. I mean, to me, it's one that my dad made me watch a hundred times when I was a kid. It's as important to me as any Mel Brooks movie or any of those comedies. It was, by the way, there was a remake in the late 90s, early aughts, a made for television version on ABC that starred Peter Falk as the Walter Matthau character.
1:10:15Okay. Yeah, that sounds good. And Woody Allen as the George Burns character. And it does not come. It's OK. It's OK. It doesn't quite have it. Not like the original. And of course, it's been it's a very the play is free. Every year, somebody does it. Yeah. Can I brag a bit and tell you about who I saw do it on Broadway? Can I say no or you're just going to tell? I didn't think so. Who would be the perfect odd couple to see on Broadway in this in this production? Is the odd couple a pun here? It is. Was that a deliberate? I saw Jack Klugman in the Walter Matthau role and Tony Randall in the George Burns role.
1:10:56And I sobbed. I sobbed with laughter that night. It was the greatest night of my life. Stop sobbing. Your wife is screaming at you. So that is my recommendation. I don't know when the opportunity will come to recommend The Sunshine Boys. It is just a marvelous, marvelous film. Wow. Okay. And just to remind you, you can rent it for three bucks on Amazon Prime, also on Apple, Fandango at home. And if you are a subscriber to YouTube TV, it's actually free on YouTube TV for subscribers. All right. Go outside. I'm here in the doctor's office. I'm going to do the part with the nurse first. Do you see a nurse here?
1:11:33How can I rehearse with a nurse that's not here? Don't ask me. I'm a putz. Let's forget the nurse. Start with the part where I'm in the office and you come in. John Daly here. 1:14:18And this week, and I should say we are joined as always for our game here by Sam. Producer Sam is joining us. Thrilled to be here. Thrilled to be here. So thrilled. I think you were last week you were trying to get out of doing this. And I said, no. Well, you have to, the streak has to end first. We got to ride this puppy till it's done. But you are here. You are going to be squaring off with Jordan for a new game, one which I will say, this one is basically impossible. But it is also the most valuable game we have played today on Don't Sputting SVU. So if I win this one, it's basically like four to three.
1:14:56I move ahead. Yeah. I meant more for the listeners than for you. Most rewarding. Yes. But if you want to use it that way, you can. It's like the golden snitch. If you catch the golden snitch. So this game is called Full Service, and it is extremely simple. I am going to give you the name of a very famous film, and you will tell me whether it is streaming on Netflix, HBO Max, Paramount Plus, or Peacock. Every one of the 10 films is streaming on one of those services. Hulu gets the diss. No Hulu this time. Sorry, Hulu. I had to limit this somehow. Now, in some cases, you know, if you know, because you're both very smart gentlemen, you know a lot about movies, if you know who made this movie, that may help you.
1:15:44Then again, it may not. Not always. Yeah. I mean, Paramount Plus has some movies that are not Paramount films. I mean, most of them are, but not all of them. So what are our options? We had Netflix. Netflix, if you want to write them down so you have them in front of you. It's Netflix. Uh-huh. HBO Max. Oh, sure. As Jordan calls it, home box office maximum. Yes. That's right. Paramount Plus, or as Jordan would call it if he was doing his segment all about French culture, Paramount Plus. Oui. Oui. And Peacock. Those are your four options. Every film I mention will be on one of them. And I honestly, I thought the other games were about amusing me and having fun.
1:16:25This is really, this is about helping our listeners. No, this is a service. You're right. All 10 of these movies are movies that are classics. They are movies that people are probably going to watch. maybe not a hundred times but at least once and i'm sure people go oh blank where the heck is that and then they got to look it up so just to be clear are these aren't origin necessarily originals these are just none of these are originals these are classic you are not classic motion pictures the old guard 2 is not one of yours the old guard 2 i'll tell you spoiler alert that one's on netflix you're not gonna see it on this list avoid it there yes okay these are 10 beloved works of cinema.
1:17:06And when we are done with this game, everyone will know where they can stream them at least for a few hours. Probably this will be out of date. And if they don't know by listening it and writing it down, they can go to what's streaming on Bazooka, the list on Letterboxd. Yes, okay. Yes, if you go to Letterboxd and type in Bazooka, it will be available on there. All right. Let her rip. There's no, honestly, I don't even think we need to worry about buzzing in. I think you should both be allowed to guess. Yeah. You can both guess for each one, and we'll just keep score of who gets however many right.
1:17:37Maybe it'll be zero to zero by the end of this. We'll see. Oh, we can both guess, and then - Why not? Yeah, yeah, okay. I understand. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You can both - If you both get it right, you both get a point. You can guess the same thing. I don't have a problem with that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Again, this is about, really, it's helping people quickly find some classic movies they may want to watch, and also pointing out how ludicrous it is that you have to keep track of all these things - That's a good point. If you want to watch these movies. All right, let's do it. in this episode a year from now.
1:18:03Will this still be true? It'll be totally worth it. It'll be totally worth it. We can play this again next year. We are recording this on Sunday night, May the 3rd, and I can guarantee that it was correct as of then. I did this this morning. Sunday, Monday, May 4th, it may not, you know, May the 4th be with you if you're trying to find these movies. They may not be where I said. But at least at this moment. Star Wars is on Disney+. Star Wars is not one of the motion pictures. Can we do a game instead where we recast Tom Blythe and people we meet on vacation, can we just pick a UK actor's under 30?
1:18:35I'm willing to listen. Well, I mean, Paul Mescal's too big now, but right, he'd be the guy, right? He'd be great. He would certainly be better. Okay. Yeah, yeah. Well, although they did make Tom Blythe use an American accent, which I thought was a critical error. And I don't know if they made Paul Mescal do that as well, if he would have, would he have the same issue? I don't know. Mescal. Mescal. Mescal. You know who would have been good? Mescal. Who was the guy screaming and yelling in Warfare? Yeah. and he was also Joseph Quinn. They're all screaming and yelling in warfare. No, no, Joseph Quinn.
1:19:04Oh, Quinn. Quinn was another one. Quinn was another one I was going to mention. The human torch. Yeah, the human torch. Yes. He would have been good. Yes. He kind of looks like Blythe. Yes, you're right. And he's more talented. I agree. Blythe, if you're listening, go take some lessons and be more talented. Oh, wow. Yeah. Go be better. Be better. All right, here we go. Are we ready to begin our game? So ready. The title of the game again is Full Service. Full Service. Full Service. Full Service. This is great. All right. Here we go. The first movie is The Godfather. Where is The Godfather streaming?
1:19:36This is very easy. Paramount Plus. It's Paramount Plus. You are both correct. I gave you an easy one. Yes. One point. Can I just say I'm reading this The Last Kings of Hollywood. Have you read this book? No, but I've had it recommended to me. It is so good. So I just had the Paramount logo pictured in my head. You said Godfather. Of course, I'm thinking about it. Yes. What is The Last Kings of Hollywood? It's about Coppola, Spielberg, and Lucas and their coming of age. It is so good. It's so good. I can't remember. It's like easy writers, rage and bold, but narrowed focus a little bit. But a little, but newer, yeah.
1:20:05And less gossipy. Less gossipy, less trashy, more, uh. Some of the stories you would have heard, but there's really, it's just so good. The most recent New Hollywood book I read, I read the one about Chinatown, The Big Goodbye or The Long Goodbye. It was a really good book. I was very impressed with that. Sam Wasson, I believe. Sam Wasson, yeah. Yes, he does good books. Okay, are we ready for question or movie two? Yes. Movie two. 2001 A Space Odyssey where is it streaming? Netflix, HBO Max, Paramount, Ploose or Peacock? I'm going to have to say HBO Max it's a Warner Brothers you're both correct it was a Warner Home release but it was MGM made the film with a weird logo that weird MGM logo that exists pretty much only on this film but yes I'm afraid people are going to stop listening and go and watch 2001 and water the godfather not gonna listen to this it's a small price to pay i think i would you rather i'm gonna guide brad i might stop the game and go watch it now that you mention it i'll see you guys later all right movie number three all right monty python and the holy grail that's on netflix jordan would you like to guess i mean sam seems to really know he seems pretty confident Yeah, the way he said it, it was like, I just watched it yesterday.
1:21:27So, yes, it's on Netflix. That is incorrect. Oh, I don't know. It was on Netflix. It was on Netflix, but as of, again, of May 3rd, it is currently on Peacock. So the reason I said this so confidently is that if you ask my oldest, my nearly 18-year-old, and my now newly 12-year-old daughter, they will say their favorite movie is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Raising those kids right. Yes, yes. And it was definitely on Netflix. We watched it on Netflix. I had watched it there. And to the point that not only when I saw it on Peacock, I didn't just assume that it was only there. I actually went to Netflix and double-checked.
1:22:10It was not. It was not. Okay. The next movie. The Blair Witch Project. The Blair Witch Project. Where? That feels Paramount Plus to me. Where can you find that pesky witch? That feels Paramount Plus. Paramount Plus. Jordan, where would you like to guess? I think it's on Netflix. We have one vote for Netflix, one vote for Paramount Plus. You are both incorrect. Oh. The Blair Witch Project is currently streaming on HBO Max. Wow. HBO Max. Who was the original distributor of that? Was it like... Artisan Entertainment, which no longer exists. Used to be live entertainment. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Somebody bought them, yeah.
1:22:54That was our fourth movie, so we're almost halfway. Here we go. The next film, another timeless movie that I'm sure many people enjoy watching on streaming. Pretty Woman. Where is Pretty Woman streaming? Now I just feel like I'm guessing. I felt so confident the first couple. I started with some easier ones and now we're getting... Pretty Woman. There might be some easier ones coming, though. Don't feel all is lost. Pretty Woman is on Peacock. No, not a chance. Pretty Woman is on HBO. Yeah. That is incorrect on both counts. Oh, man. If we're both wrong, we get a point. Pretty Woman is currently streaming on Netflix.
1:23:41Oh, wow. Good for them. I can't believe it knocked Monty Python in the Holy Grail. It must be one of the oldest titles available on Netflix. Okay. Next motion picture is All the President's Men. Where is All the President's Men? I just watched this. I did too. Except I watched it on Blu-ray. This is on Paramount+. This is on Paramount+. This is on HBO as well. This is on HBO, says Sam. Sam gets one point it is currently streaming on home box office maximum was it originally Warner Brothers we can look that up I was a United Artists it might have been a United Artists all the president's distributor is Warner Brothers so there you go okay Sam takes a lead three to two with four films remaining here we go Next film is the timeless masterpiece, which you were talking about when I signed on tonight.
1:24:47I don't know why. Shrek. Where is Shrek streaming now? Oh, where is Shrek? Where in the world is Shrek streaming now? Shrek is on Netflix. No, it's on Peacock. Sam is now with a commanding two-point lead. Oh, damn. Oh, no. which I believe might be now DreamWorks is affiliated with Universal now I believe yeah yeah yeah and so Sam is correct we need more games that are just pure blind pure blind guessing it's not blind guessing I mean in your bones you know which company made it and where the deals are it's all vibes it's all vibes it's exactly it's vibes it's vibes yeah alright Jordan it's not over yet and in fact it's definitely not over yet because the final one there's a there's a twist
1:25:37Okay. Movie number seven. Very similar to Shrek, really, when you think about it, at least in terms of the way it was, you know, the genre. Grave of the Fireflies. Where is Grave of... Okay. Sam very confidently says that's on Netflix. Jordan. It's on Netflix. I'm going to say it's on Netflix. You are both correct. Have you watched it on Netflix recently? My 15 year old just did. She was on the way home from New Orleans on a bus for the show choir. And I get a text to say like, oh, my God, Grave of the Fireflies. And I'm like, what happened to you? And she showed me like a screenshot of her watching it on a bus filled with, you know, 40, 50 other show choir kids.
1:26:28I don't know why. It's a great way to make friends. Pull up a chair. Yeah, she saw an Instagram thing about it. She was like, I'll just watch this. Wow. She was not prepared. Scarred for life. Well, now you owe her something, I guess. So I do know. Yeah, so that is why I knew. She did you a solid. She helped you. And Jordan, she helped you too, because you definitely would not have guessed that if not for Sam's confidence. No, no, he seemed too confident. You got to have a poker face when you play this game. Yes, if you had played like, oh, I don't know, I don't know, I could be wrong, you might have been able to sneak an extra point.
1:27:00So our current score, five to three in favor of Sam with two movies remaining. Oh, wow. I can tie it up. I can tie it up. You can still tie it up or win, potentially. I will just say that. And I'll explain why when we get to the last movie. A double, yeah. Our penultimate title is Terminator 2 Judgment Day. Judgment, Judgment, Judgment. Thank you. Judgment, Judgment, Judgment. Where is that motion picture streaming right now? Netflix, HBO Max, Paramount Plus, or Peacock? Peacock. Cha-cha-chan, cha-chan. I think that's going to be on...
1:27:40Trust me. Yeah. No, I don't know. I think it's going to be on HBO Max. Come with me if you want to live. I think it's on HBO Max. You were both incorrect, unfortunately. the Terminator 2 Judgment Day currently available on Paramount+. Okay, so Jordan can still tie. He could still tie. He cannot win, but he could still tie. It was originally, that was Is it Karolko? Karolko was a production company, but who distributed it? That I'm not sure. Maybe TriStar? Which would have been now Sony. Sony has no streaming service, so that's why it's flying around. It could be floating in the wind. It was TriStar, which was part of Sony, blah, blah, blah.
1:28:26And I will note, this is not the last movie, but I just want to note, Terminator 1 is not on Paramount+. It is on HBO Max. So even within the franchise, they're not even on the same streaming service. You got to run around. Yes. Okay. For our final movie, Sam, Jordan, you cannot win, but you could talk. I must. I must. And I will explain why. Please do. Our final film is available on two simultaneous services, and I will give you a point for each one that you correctly identify. So if Sam borks them all and Jordan, you get both right, you could try. It's possible. It's possible. It's not the matter of being possible.
1:29:09The motion picture in question is Pulp Fiction. What two of the four streaming services is it on? it's a mirror max so that's disney which is nowhere um it's on it's on netflix and peacock it's on paramount plus and hbo max you will each get one point it is on peacock and paramount plus one of the two so that means the streak is over. Oh, wow. And Forrest Gump is on all four. Congratulations. You have done it. Nice. Now I get to host. Now you can host the next game. Good. Now you can do that. But I think this is something that is worth doing occasionally. Oh, this is great. How did you pick? Especially like some of these like Grave of the Firefly.
1:30:04I want to know your process. The process of finding them was I opened up tabs with all four of these services. Yeah. I looked for a movie that I thought would be something that would be worthwhile and then i checked to see is this available on these other four services or is it not and the only one that was on more than one was in this of these 10 was pulp fiction all of those movies they were only available on one so if you want to watch all 10 of those movies on streaming you literally have to subscribe to four different places at 10 bucks a pop or 100 bucks a year whatever it is legitimate question what's what do you guys use to check where things are.
1:30:42Because I always use justwatch.com, but there are some others. I mean, mostly I just use Letterboxd, to be honest. If I have to, you know, if I look for a title that I want to watch, yeah. It tells you where it's streaming? Yeah, you can even set it on Letterboxd for the streaming channels you actually subscribe to, so it'll tell you if... Oh, that is a feature, yeah. I never knew that. I always used Justwatch. I have used it for a long time, but I must say, in recent months, I've found it to be less and less reliable. So what have you been using? I've been using Letterboxd or I just I just roam around looking looking high and low, basically.
1:31:18Wow. No, that's I'm that's good to know. I mean, I think if you have an Apple TV doohickey, if you if you put the title in, it'll tell you on Apple TV. And it's but it's not always correct. That's the thing. Even the places that are potential sources, they can't always be correct. So what I'm I think what we have to say here is the only place that you can trust right here is us. is this this podcast what's dreaming on bazooka just just subscribe to bazooka and you'll get it bazooka.biz
1:31:53well that was a fun game matt singer always coming in with the fun games i didn't like this one as much because i lost but it was still pretty good after all that talking oh i'm so bad i'm the best i've won three games i can't be stopped So let's talk about what's... How does it feel now? It feels really good to talk about what's new on streaming, which is why people tune in to FilmSpotting SVU. When new on streaming this week, we have some notable VOD rentals and purchases of new films that were out in theaters. You know, back in the old days, a movie would play in movie theater, you'd wait several months, then you'd go and get the tape.
1:32:33That in the old Blockbuster video, you have to go get a VHS. Wow. Now what a difference. Now you still do have to wait a little while for most movies and then they are available to rent or buy. And there's three biggies actually coming up this week. Number one is probably at the end of the day, the most talked about. Well, maybe Wuthering Heights was more talked about. But the other most talked about movie was the drama, the Robert Pattinson Zendaya dark comedy drama, whatever the heck you want to call it. Controversial film that some people think is a great peek at the zeitgeist of the Gen Z rising younger millennial voices and how they lived in this wacky world today.
1:33:23day and some people thought it didn't go far enough or it was far-fetched and it certainly launched a thousand think pieces and if you didn't see it in the theater but many people did it was a bit of a success it wasn't you know didn't do avatar money but it did well this is your opportunity to rent or buy it for a reasonable sum another movie that's coming out this week is Ready or Not 2, colon, Here I Come, which is the sequel to the first Ready or Not in which Samara Weaving kills a lot of people. Elijah Wood is in it. Did you see this, Ready or Not 2, colon, Here I Come? I have seen all three of these movies you're discussing here.
1:34:07I saw the drama. I liked it. As a hip, young person, I really related to it spoke to my, our moment. And Ready or Not 2, I also saw, it was okay. I thought Ready or Not 2 was fine. It's a little bit, you know what? Honestly, it was too violent because it was trying to be funny and then it was this kind of, there's this one scene where there's, I mean, I know she's a woman in peril and she gets beat up. It just goes on and on and on. I'm like, all right, this is a little much. These movies, I mean, if you saw the first one, it's more of that style of film. They're gleefully excessive. And if the sight of the human body literally exploding in a geyser of blood is your cup of tea and or blood, that's what you're going to get there.
1:34:53Yeah, but that part was funny because it was over the top. But then there was like one scene where the bad guy is beating up Samara Weaving, and it was just like, it was too real. It wasn't funny. I see. That's what bothered me. Okay. And David Cronenberg is in it for five minutes also. He's very funny. He is. And then finally, another biggie, which I have not seen, and quite frankly, I don't foresee a future in which I'll ever see it, the Super Mario Galaxy movie. Yes. I know. I don't know. You know, I have kept my head in the sand. I have no interest in this. I don't know from Super Mario. I played the game when I was young a couple of times.
1:35:31He jumps up in a pipe and there's a turtle, I know. I saw the one with John Leguizamo 100 years ago. Yeah. What a picture. Should I tell my original Mario Brothers story? No. Let me tell it real quick. This is almost as good as the bread. No. I used to work - Save it. Oh, boy. Save it. No, come on. This is good. You're going to like this one. I used to work - This is true, Sam. This is true. He used to work - Let me tell you. He used to work as a plumber in Brooklyn. I used to work at what was called the Lowe's Cinema 6 in Freehold, New Jersey, which is now a gym. And I did all - I did that. I sold the popcorn.
1:36:07I was the usher. and I was the ticket seller and the ticket terror. But this shift, I was the ticket seller. And the way this theater was, was the booth where you sold the tickets was like separate from the theater. You were like in a little box, practically in the middle of the parking lot. Yeah, you were outside. I went to this theater too. Outside in a glass booth, basically. Classic old school movie theater kind of shtick. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like Adolf Eichmann, you're there in a glass booth. so um what happens is one time it's an afternoon it's kind of quiet nobody's coming to see it's a cinema it's a six plex and i see a car pull up an old pinto old man gets out walks to the front it's like the first seating so it's like 11 55 a.m it's bob hoskins and no finally an older woman is following and she's going he's going come on come on she's like i'm coming.
1:37:04I'm coming. Come on. Let's do it. Come on. Hurry up. And she goes, I can't believe you're taking me to see this. And I swear to you this is true. I swear on everything this is true. He turns and he goes, look, I'm a plumber named Mario. If they're going to make a movie about a plumber named Mario, I'm going to see it. Two for Mario Brothers movie, please. And if I, too bad cell phone cameras did not exist then, but I swear to you, I witnessed this and I was alone. Nobody was he wearing blue and red overalls or blue and green. but it's Mario. He must've been in the red overalls. All I know is that he schlepped.
1:37:49And then later, you know, 98 minutes later when the movie was over, I saw him come, I go, Hey Mario, what'd you think? And he's like, it wasn't that good. He said, it's a me Mario. And I didn't like it. His wife was not pleased, but I swear to you that was true. Was her name Peach? All I know is having witnessed that, I have no business seeing these new ones, and I never will. And I know that they're awful. This story is so good, Jordan. I'm actually moving it to the bakery story location. Just so people know. What else is coming out, Matt? Well, briefly here we have theatrical releases that are now on streaming.
1:38:30Those were all movies that you mentioned that you have to rent. These are extra purchases. But if you are a subscriber to Hulu, you can see one of my favorite movies of 2026 so far. Sam Raimi's Send Help. Great movie. Great movie. Yes. Loved it. Speaking of gleefully excessive. Yes. But that that never got so vicious as Ready or Not 2. And that's why it's so good. Yes. So Send Help. That's on Hulu on Thursday, the 7th, May 7th. And then also on May 8th, Friday the 8th on HBO Max will be the, this one I have not seen yet, the sequel to Greenland. Greenland 2 Migration. What a great subtitle that is.
1:39:15Migration. Okay. And coming directly to streaming now in the week ahead, we have a new horror anthology, a new season of The Terror. Devil in Silver on AMC Plus and Shudder. I will confess here, I have subscribed to Shudder off and on many times. AMC Plus, I've never subscribed to. I'm not familiar with their programming. But people love the terror. I haven't seen it, but people love it. People do love the terror. This edition stars Dan Stevens as a man wrongfully committed to a, quote, hellish psychiatric institution. And that will be on AMC Plus and Shudder. over on stars we have a new limited series version of amadeus oh god i don't know that you can improve on amadeus but someone's gonna try and it has will sharp as mozart and paul bettany as salieri and i will say i saw a commercial for this i was watching something i was not watching stars but somehow i saw a commercial for this this week and i said yeah looks like uh amadeus with paul bettany I like Paul Bettany I do too but I will never watch Amadeus is truly one of the greatest movies ever made it's in my top 10 seriously and I will never see this I'd like to see The Terror though but it's based on a Dan Simmons novel The Terror it's a series and it's on my list of shows that one of these days I'll get to but you know a lot of movies a lot of shows out there there's a lot to watch and then on Netflix just very briefly here actually these are things that we are weighing watching We may actually end up covering both of these things in the weeks ahead.
1:40:55One of them is the new four-episode adaptation of Lord of the Flies. This was adapted by Jack Thorne, who did Netflix's big show of, I guess, last year, Adolescence. Everybody watched Adolescence. I think it's still winning Emmys as we speak. It's won every award for television that there is. by the time you hear this Lord of the Flies will be streaming on Netflix and then there is also the motion picture remarkably bright creatures adapted from a best selling novel I have seen the commercial for this one as well it has Sally Field and her friendship with an octopus in an aquarium voiced by Alfred Molina that is the wait a minute Wait, oh, what?
1:41:45Is this actually like a Doc Ock thing going on? I mean. Oh, is that why they cast him? I didn't even put that together. It doesn't. He seems to be an actual octopus. But now the notion that Dr. Octopus was somehow transformed, perhaps by Dr. Miles Warren, the jackal or someone of that nature into an actual octopus. This is intriguing. I am I'm interested in the Lord of the Flies adaptation because, you know, it's a classic book and there's been two other movie versions. And I am one of those. I'm always intrigued when when something gets remade and remade and remade. I'm always curious about that.
1:42:28At this point, that looks like that's what's going to be the review next week. We're going to we're going to dip our toe into the murky waters of streaming television, at least a limited series. limited series so Lord of the Flies on Netflix that's what we're looking at at this point we reserve the right to change our minds we can dip eight toes and see the octopus movie um but look my my uh pen name is Matt Singer but my real name is John Lord of the Flies and if they're gonna make a TV show called Lord of the Flies Ethel I'm gonna go see it i wonder what mario's up to right now oh god only knows well you have now listened to another episode of uh streaming video unit uh flip flim spotting why don't you start again and this time maybe say the name of the show you have listened to another episode of film spotting svu the streaming video unit.

1:44:49Hot take. You can disagree with someone and not hate them. I know, really groundbreaking stuff. But lately, that line seems blurry. Because hate is rising across communities in all kinds of ways, and Jewish communities are getting a lot of it right now. You don't have to agree with people. You just have to not be awful. From the publisher
This week on the Streaming Video Unit, Matt and Jordan see if Netflix’s massive rom-com hit People We Meet on Vacation (starring "generational talent" Emily Bader) lives up to its 50-million-stream hype. Does the film successfully invert the When Harry Met Sally formula, or is it just a beautiful travelogue hampered by a "charisma vacuum"?
Later, Jordan reopens the file on the 2023 indie mafia drama Fresh Kills (also co-starring Bader) and Matt follows invites us to fall in love with the 1963 French New Wave short The Bakery Girl of Monceau.
Finally, producer Sam steps into the "Digital Lineup" to challenge Jordan’s 3-0 winning streak in a high-stakes game of "Full Service."
