Podcast Notes: HUNGRY - Espresso: Rory Sutherland - The Best MBA is a Kitchen Porter

Episode Overview

  • Host: Daniel Pope
  • Guest: Rory Sutherland
  • Theme: The unique insights and advantages gained from experience in small businesses and how they contrast with traditional corporate structures.
  • Duration: Short and snappy format designed to deliver quick business wisdom.

Key Concepts

Importance of Diverse Experience

  • Shopkeeping as an MBA:
  • Sutherland argues that growing up in a small business, like a shop or restaurant, provides practical experience akin to an MBA. This experience fosters a holistic understanding of business operations, as individuals are involved in all aspects of the business.
  • Systems Thinking vs. Component Parts:
  • The discussion highlights the distinction between viewing a business as a collection of individual components versus understanding it as a cohesive system. Sutherland emphasizes that successful entrepreneurs often adopt a systems perspective, leading to better strategic thinking.

Critique of Large Organizations

  • Suboptimal Optimization:
  • Sutherland critiques the approach of large organizations that focus on optimizing individual parts of a business. He compares this to solving a Sudoku puzzle where dividing the task among different individuals will not yield a correct solution unless the whole puzzle is considered.
  • Cultural Disconnect:
  • Individuals with small business backgrounds may find corporate structures frustrating and illogical, as their practical experiences conflict with the often bureaucratic and segmented decision-making processes of larger companies.

Major Discussions

  • Personal Experience:
  • Sutherland shares anecdotes about his own journey and the challenges he faced transitioning from a practical, hands-on understanding of business to the more abstract roles often found in larger organizations.
  • Learning from Failures:
  • The discussion touches on the importance of learning from failures and how a practical background can provide insights into common pitfalls that might be overlooked by those trained strictly in academic or corporate settings.

Sponsorship Mention

  • Unleashed:
  • The episode features a promotional segment for Unleashed, an inventory management software that integrates with financial and e-commerce systems.
  • Benefits include:
  • Reducing administrative time.
  • Improving cash flow understanding.
  • Enhancing margin clarity.
  • Notable brands using Unleashed include Candy Kittens, Tiny Rebel, and TRIP.

Conclusion

  • Sutherland's insights challenge listeners to consider the value of practical experience and holistic thinking in business. He argues that traditional pathways to business knowledge, like formal education, may not prepare individuals for the complexities of real-world business challenges.
  • Call to Action:
  • Listeners are encouraged to subscribe for more insights and connect with the host through social media links provided in the episode.

0:01Morning, morning, or welcome. Yes, I have grown a tash, I have got a nose ring and I am covered in tattoos. I am your barista for the day. Welcome to Espresso short, snappy, espresso short podcast episodes. I've literally downloaded all the wisdom from all the founders and all the brands like Gurd, Tills, Coconut Collaborative, Candy Kittens, Little Moons, Planet Organic and I've distilled it into this micro short snappy wisdom to give you a mahoosive edge on the day to kickstart your day so look without further ado let's get cracking and enjoy this espresso shot that business of effectively dividing responsibilities in a large organization where your job is to do the marketing your job is to do the finance was completely baffling to me because you'd always done everything you know and um so i really spent sort of the first three years floundering about failing to understand how a business worked that in some ways i think in the long term that was actually an advantage because because my natural assumption was to look at questions from a systems perspective not a component parts perspective now i've always wondered if you look at the success absolutely disproportionate insanely disproportionate commercial success of various ethnic groups okay who have typically entered the country through shopkeeping okay or possibly running a restaurant the family business later whether it's you know indians you know it would have been sort of jewish tailors in the 19th century etc one of the probable reasons i suspect for this applies to rishi sunak i guess is that if you grow up in a shop it's a free mba you know if you if you grow up in a shop if you grow up in a restaurant in a sense you actually get to understand everything the whole equation of business and as a consequence you don't look at a business through its component parts to a kind of you know divide and optimize approach you actually look at the business as a whole because you have the power in a sense to influence all of those different so you naturally think strategically in a way that i think most people in organizations don't because they've been given what i call it's what i call a quarter of the sudoku quick one guys espresso's got a brand new sponsor unleashed unleashes inventory management software that talks directly to your finance and econ software we use unleashed daily islands i bloody love it we've got our admin time in half saving approximately 30k a year why use it save money save headaches save stress get granular clarity on your margins no way stock is don't miss availability look your favorite brands literally use unleashed as their backbone candy kittens tiny rebel trip always it religiously look there's a link in the show notes please feel free to book a call with josh and his wonderful sales team at unleashed they're amazing even nothing comes of it and even better news you'll get your first month free if you reference hungry thank you i don't know if you do sudoku numbers words i'm down to play with numbers i just even that book i try to read but the way i describe an awful lot of uh large businesses approach to things is the assumption that the optimization of the parts will lead to the optimization of the whole.

3:25In fact, those are actually contradictions. If you optimize individual parts of a complex system, by definition, what you achieve overall is suboptimal. And the way I describe it is there are lots of problems. You can't cut a Sudoku into nine squares, hand them out to nine different people and say, can you solve your bit of the puzzle? If you haven't got the whole thing, you can't solve it. And I think that may be why, you know, people who grow up in shops, people who grow up in small businesses, actually, it undoubtedly ill equips you in a way, for working in large organisations. Because what the large organisation is doing seems stupid.

4:06And so you don't play the game. But on the other hand, deep down, you're right not to play the game, because the game is stupid so how did that i completely agree it's like you want the few so you said you're we're going to highlight not one fuck up but you said that you you had that almost shopkeeper um learning growing up right thank you so so much for listening it honestly means the world to me i hope you enjoyed your morning coffee and go and have an amazing day let's be having ya if you want the fun episode it will be in the show notes a link will be in the show notes the full episode thank you so much please leave friends as well it means the world to me
