Listeners learn about the new features of the platform, how to optimize their posts, and the types of content that are favored under the new algorithm.

Key Takeaways

Understanding the New Algorithm

  • Algorithm Insights: Neil admits uncertainty regarding the full workings of the new algorithm but highlights significant changes.
  • Blocking Feature Change: Users can no longer block individuals from seeing their posts, altering how privacy on the platform operates.

Engagement Metrics

  • Engagement Types:
  • Likes vs. Replies:
  • A like is valued at 0.5 points, while a reply is worth 13.5 points, indicating that replies are far more impactful.
  • Post Visibility: Replies and retweets are prioritized in others' feeds over standard posts.

Content Recommendations

  • Reposting Strategy: Always add context when reposting to enhance originality and engagement.
  • Account Type: Switching your account to a creator type can improve visibility and engagement opportunities.

Media Use

  • Utilizing Rich Media: Incorporating images, videos, and GIFs can significantly boost engagement. Posts containing multiple images are especially effective.

What to Focus On

  • Boosted Content:
  • Posts that engage users (replies and interactions).
  • Bookmark-worthy posts which indicate higher user interest.
  • Trends and popular topics to capture current audience attention.

Content to Avoid

  • De-boosted Content:
  • Out-of-network links, such as URLs to competitors.
  • Content that fails to resonate with your audience.
  • Excessive retweets of your comments on others' posts.

Key Insights

  • Content Quality: The algorithm favors unique, fresh content over replicated ideas. Aim to provide content that is engaging and resonates with your audience.
  • Avoiding Common Pitfalls: Many users mimic others instead of creating original content, which can lead to decreased visibility and engagement.
  • Raising Standards: As the competition increases, the quality of content must also improve to garner more reach and interaction.

0:00All right. So we are going to talk about the secrets behind the new X algorithm, also formerly known as Twitter. So Neil, do you know some of the key takeaways from the new algorithm or no? No, I do not. I do know that they're changing up a feature right now where you can't block people from seeing your tweets. I don't know what they're going to call tweets now, but they're going to call what tweets are called posts now. So these are called posts now, but yeah. So the main thing I read is, and there's a lot of things I have not read, but one of the things I did read was they're going to make it where if you, if someone was blocked, they can still see your tweets now.

0:34Yeah. So one thing I'll flag is my friend, Eamon, who used to run a company called AppSumo, he posted something in a, in a chat that we're in. And basically, do you know the difference between a like and a reply, Neil, like the difference in engagement? no but a reply is much more than a like by correct yeah so basically a like is only the point let's say it's a point system right the number of points that you get from a like would be like 0.5 points right like half a point now if it's a reply you get 13.5 points which is like a 27 time difference that makes sense yeah well the reason being is one is very easy to do one takes a lot of effort but that's the same with any platforms i don't know what else that they ended up revealing because i didn't end up reading the article or wherever they end up breaking well Let me show you.

1:21I will show you. Our friend over here, Tebow, I spent 20 hours going through 13 ,000 lines of altered code. So you don't have to hear the golden nuggets. So we're not going to read all of this. You can find it yourself. This tweet got 2 point, sorry, post got 2.3 million views. And so X, number one, X doesn't want to show duplicate conversations in the feed. So when you reply and retweet, your reply will be given priority to shown in others' feed. So that's the first one I was talking about. Replies are greater than retweets. So that makes a lot of sense. So basically whenever you're reposting, you should be adding some context to it so it looks a little more original because it is.

1:57Number two, X wants more creators to launch subscriptions. So if you're eligible to become subscriber content creator, they'll push your content. Switch your account to creator type just in case. Number three, X now categorizes text and image posts differently. Image tweets get boosted, so use more media in your posts and threads. Three to four images can boost your reach. I'm actually going to scroll to the bottom, Neil, because this guy summarizes it, I believe. So what gets boosted? Do more of this. Replies and engagement. Bookmark-worthy posts. And I saw this last week. I posted a full two-hour interview with Alex Ramosi, and that got like 700 or 800 bookmarks on it.

2:33And it basically got, I think, what, 100 ,000 views, which is pretty decent. Posts on trending and popular topics. Rich media, images, videos, GIFs, content. Because you can see, even with Elon, he's like going to Mr. B. He's like, hey, you should post a video on this thing, right? He's trying to make sure that X is this everything app, right? Well-performing tweets will stay longer on the feed, 48 hours. Subscription eligible creators get a boost. And then finally, we can cap it off with this. What gets de-boosted? Do less of this. Out-of-network content like competitor mentions, URL, so like YouTube, for example.

3:05Content that doesn't resonate with your current followers. And retweets on posts that you've commented on. You know what's funny? It doesn't matter if they break down their algorithm or any other social network breaks down their algorithm. It's all the same in which the stuff that requires users to take more action, like leave a comment is always going to be valued, more valuable than a like. And if you keep posting content that your followers don't want to like, or that they don't engage with, or they don't like, they're going to start suppressing how many people see your content, because if your followers don't like you, then you're kind of out of luck.

3:36And the real key to do really well is you create new, fresh content that people haven't seen and stuff that they want to engage with and share and talk about. That's the basic stuff, right? And it's what most people get wrong with their social media marketing, whether it's on X or Instagram. They're looking what other people do and they're posting similar types of content instead of figuring out what can you post that's new, unique, and fresh that other people are not talking about. That's how you win. Look, my take on it, I'll just keep it simple. I think we're kind of saying the same thing is just do content that you're proud, post content that you're proud to share and do content that you think is better than other people's because the standards are getting higher and higher and that's how you're going to get more reach.

4:14And we'll touch upon this in the next couple episodes where we talk about how to win at YouTube in 2023 because I have some insights to share. But that is it for today's episode. Please don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe. Five stars, please. And we will catch you tomorrow.
