36Hey everybody, it's Bruce. Thanks for pulling up a chair for another bonus episode of Table for Two. Last week, we published our interview with journalist, recent author, and former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair, Graydon Carter. He shared so many great stories during our lunch, and he even had more fun tales to tell during our lightning round. I hope you enjoy, and we'll be back next week with our exciting season finale. So we're going to do a little speed round here. Okay, favorite year and why? In my life? Mm-hmm. Probably 1978 when I came to New York. I mean, I was just so excited. I mean, like they say, Buddy from Elf.

17Yeah, there's buildings, there's elevators. Plus you're young. It's like everything's new. I had a 32 inch waist and a lot more hair. I mean, you know, we take that for granted. 34, okay. All right. You have to leave New York today and can only take things you can carry with you. What are you bringing? I take my cameras. I have a couple of Leica cameras. And I would take something from my office. I have this sort of wonderful old ashtray that's shaped like a giant champagne cork that I happen to love. I'd probably take that. Okay. Which I also love in your book when you realize the marketing tool of creating ashtrays and things for people to actually take these parties.

58Designed to be sold. I still have so many vanity things. Loafers or lace-ups? Oh, lace-ups. Most beautiful person you've ever met movie star-wise, male and female? I met years ago when I was working at Time. I had to cover something and I met Myrna Loy. who I always thought was the most beautiful woman and she had exactly the same face she did in the Thin Men. She has that sort of disease where she had millions of tiny wrinkles so if you saw her eight feet away she looked exactly like Thin Man Myrloi and she was one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. I love that about you. I love that you're connected to the past.

35100%. The past is great. Best, well, best party you've ever, best party you've ever thrown. It doesn't have to be a Vanity Fair party. Best party you've ever thrown. I did a dinner at the River Cafe in London that was pretty fabulous. It was all people from the British Theater, and that was pretty memorable. Wine. Red, white, rosé. Well, I pushed the season at both ends, so I happen to like rosé. It reminds me of France. I'm assuming it's better for you. Right. I don't know what you can assume. You love the Hotel de Cabo. Too expensive, but yes, I do. We had a fun time in the lobby that day. We had a good laugh in the lobby that day looking at all the blonde women walking by.

17No, I do like the Hotel de Cap. Worst faux pas when hosting a dinner party? Worst faux pas. Well, I mean, this wasn't during a dinner party. This was during a dinner I had. I was having dinner in Canada, and I congratulated our waitress on being pregnant. I think it must have been all do that once and then never, ever again. Ever again. I mean, you're like, you can never recover from that. No, I can't. I can't even watch it. You didn't let me finish. Worst faux pas when you were attending a dinner party? Oh, God. I'm pretty well behaved nowadays. Or someone attending your dinner party. I mean, I think anybody who stays too long, like we had a dinner.

04It's in my book. Yes, it is. For Margaret, Princess Margaret. And she did, you know, New York dinner parties. sort of chop off around 10, 15. People have to get to work and earn a living. And she, I mean, nobody was allowed to leave until she left, I mean, that's just protocol. And she stayed until about 12, 30. It's a blast. No, no, it was like a hostage situation for most of the guys. It was just, the looks on their face. And your friend Barry Diller was just, he kept saying, I got to get out of here. And I said, oh, no, no, no, please just go at the back door if you're going to leave, please.

41that is it's brutal like you think you're going to pass out I've had that happen to us at our house and you're just like oh my god there's a natural time span and then my father used to come down he was the same way and went around 10 10 15 he'd he'd come to my mother and say whisper quite loudly so the guests could hear Mark we can't keep these good people any longer and people they started looking at the watches and getting their coats your first kiss my first kiss I played football and when I was in high school I went out with one of the cheerleaders alright that's a good memory favorite place you've been in the world definitely the south of France you love the south of France aside from New York I do love I just love the smell I love the light I love the peacefulness and people in southern France are much happier and friendlier than people in northern France it's like different nations and there's just something about the sky and the size of the sky.

41Anyway, I just love it. Biggest embarrassment. Biggest embarrassment. Holy cow, there's so many. I mean, one time I was on a traveling hockey team, and we were in the Montreal subway station, and I was leaning over, and the cheerleaders were all down below, and all the girls from the high school were down below, and I leaned over my equipment bag accidentally, and my jockstrap fell out of the equipment bag, and you'd think of Balm and Latinx. Women were shrieking and I had to go down the stairs and pick up the... That would be... I think it was... And you were a teenager. I was sweating and it was wet and everything.

21It sort of splashed. See, now, if you were in a room with gay guys, that would have been the most exciting thing that ever happened to any of them. Great, and thank you for joining me today. This has been a huge honor for me. And if you're listening, please, When the going was good and editors' adventures during the last golden age of magazines, it's amazing.

13Thank you.

Graydon Carter is quite aware that no matter how well planned a party is, it is always at risk of being ruined by an impolite guest. But of all the social faux pas he’s been privy to, which was the most out of line? On this week’s bonus episode of Table for Two, Carter joins host Bruce Bozzi and discusses his go-to variety of wine, the most beautiful person he’s ever met, and why the south of France is his favorite place in the world.
