In short

Tailenders (BBC) episode mixes cricket talk with a segment about Mr Beast’s “Good Bad Billionaire” style fame/wealth, plus a “Jimmy’s Timeline and Length” quiz celebrating fast-bowler Jimmy Anderson’s career longevity. It also covers Lancashire’s County Championship match at Northants (North Hans/Northants).

Guests/backgrounds

Jimmy Anderson (Lancashire and England legend; recently captain), Felix White (co-host), plus recurring Tailenders crew (Fee, Greg, Sharky, Matching, and “Tailenders” listeners). No formal celebrity guests; most are cricket personalities/hosts and fans.

Key claims

Anderson took 5/66 and 3/45 in the match; he reached 400 wickets for Lancashire. A rare stat: Anderson dismissed James Sayles (son of David Sayles) 21 years after dismissing David. Anderson discusses match awareness, wind affecting perceived swing, and captaincy mental load.

Notable examples

“roller/painting lines” live-stream jokes; Lord’s Tailenders meet-up; Fry’s Chocolate Cream reveal; “Jimmy’s Timeline” quiz links wickets to cultural moments (e.g., 100th Test wicket vs Jack Kallis; 700th wicket at Dharamsala).

On Good Bad Billionaire, we're going to find out how the world's most popular YouTuber, Mr Beast, made his fortune. He's buried himself in a coffin for days. Counted to 100 ,000 on camera. And even recreated Squid Games, all in an attempt to go viral on the internet. But it all started when he gave a homeless man$10 ,000. So is he a philanthropist reshaping capitalism? 1:05Tailenders! Go World Cheers and thank you for having me on Tailenders.

1:10Jimmy Anderson:I was testing the energy levels. Okay. No, I wondered if there would be a call and response, but it's okay. No, no, no, it's fine. It's a Thursday lunchtime. I just, you know, Jimmy's had four hard days of cricket, long days of cricket and a lot of overs. I just wanted to check but maybe I'll try a different energy Tailenders Tailenders I feel like Fee was playing something from a medieval banquet on his guitar were you doing some because I know you're learning flamenco yeah yeah yeah I was going to say you've been learning that for a while haven't you when we first started doing Tailenders I started learning flamenco and then the only way I incorporated that into any sort of art form was to play it while you answered questions about bowling jim that's where i put those riffs to use and then recently i thought joe i'm gonna pick it up again because i need to ask jimmy some more questions and he needs some more flamenco inspired backing for it go well cheers and also when i saw you fee you were talking about your lovely long nails which you're growing because it helps with flamenco playing do you know what i've actually cut them a bit since because i started to get a bit self-conscious about them i'd like shown to a couple of friends and they're a bit like oh that is actually rank like because i was really impressed with my long nails and uh my flamenco teacher bob in catford legend taught by pacco pina he was like oh you gotta get grow those nails so i was like i'm gonna get nails like you bob i promise but then when you show them to people that aren't into flamenco they think you just look a bit like dracula or something Yeah, well also, if you're, as you were doing it last week at Lourdes at the County Championship, which we'll get into in a second, you were giving lots of double pack releases to tailenders and you could actually do a double claw release.

2:58Jimmy Anderson:Or dig my flamenco claws into their shoulders. You could dig your claws into their back. That's so true. It's a health hazard when you're a tailender. Hey Jimmy, well bold. Thank you. Well bold, Jim. And we should say, hello and welcome to tailenders. You're welcome, Fabulous. The County Championship is back and we had a really nice time. Matching Tendalka is going to be here in a second. we need to talk to Sir Jimmy Anderson we of course have Felix White here as well and a classic end of well end of four day slash five day game scene at North Hans where everyone was around the bat brilliant Lanks couldn't quite get that final wicket but you had it was a really it was a really great match over the four days Jimmy obviously disappointed about that but some great stuff to take from it yeah very positive all in all I think you know it's our first competitive game of the year we had a sort of inter-squad match on pre-season but we've not played any other counties or anything as you might normally do during pre-season which other counties have done so I think to put in a performance like that was pleasing frustrating not to get over the line but it was a funny wicket actually it was a new ball wicket where it was doing quite a lot with the new ball and then gradually got flatter as the game went on and they had quite a long batting line-up as well they had Kimber coming in at number 10 who's a recognised batter he was playing in their team as a batter so to have a batter coming in at number 10 what are you coming in at 10?

4:23yeah they had a really long batting line up so it was you know just proved too tough to get that final wicket we did create chances which you know if we were a bit more ruthless if we take those we win the game but that's the way it goes sometimes but all in all positive and looking forward to get going again tomorrow I enjoyed it a lot

4:44Jimmy Anderson:5 for 66 in the first innings 3 for 45 in the second 8 in the match Jimmy gets another 5 for 400 wickets now for Lancashire fantastic how are you feeling after it? you looked I mean all the chat has been look at this it's unbelievable still do you know what I don't want to sound like a knob but I didn't bowl my best I didn't I didn't I bowled some good balls but I've definitely bowled better and got less wickets but yeah I just felt a little bit of sort of lacking that match awareness and match intensity you know I've bowled quite a lot of four balls which I don't normally do so learn from that and move on.

5:29It seemed like you were like I mean this is an obvious question but I don't want to sound surprised at but you seem like you're hooping it massively I was watching it live and especially into the, like in-swinger to the left-handers, it felt like it was shaping large. It wasn't swinging, really. Really? What was that shape then, going into...

5:49Jimmy Anderson:I think I know what that is. There was a windy gantry at North France, and when Jimmy was bowling from that end, the whole camera was shaking, which may have given the impression of a reverse swing. Is that what that was? Maybe. There was quite a strong breeze for the game. Actually, I reckon day two and three, I think it was Storm Dave, and it was one of the strongest wins I've ever had to play in. I bowled into it as well in the first innings. So my body and my hairline took a battering. I saw the classic put the quiff back as he walked back to his mark. But yeah, it swung a bit, but not huge amounts.

6:30It was a really nice pitch to bowl on with a new ball actually and then once the ball got soft and it just felt a little bit flatter. It happened in both innings. It moved around a bit with their new ball on day one and then we managed to get through that and it got easier to bat as the day went on and pretty much happened in all four innings really. Same scenario, yeah. So good.

6:54Jimmy Anderson:A lot of good chat about the James Sales, David Sales stat. Sharky, time for a stat bomb. Oh, he faded himself up visually. He's got his thumbs up there. I think indicating that... I'll drop it in after. Oh, yes, it fades up. I'm going to fade it up, I'll drop it in after. Yes, you fade it up. Yes, you fade it up, you can drop it in after. Right, let's go again. Stat bomb! Lookout, take cover. It's time for another stat bomb. Statistic incoming.

7:27Jimmy Anderson:A standout moment of the game came when Jimmy Anderson dismissed James Sayles the son of David Sayles In county cricket back in 2005 James Anderson dismissed David Sayles and then 21 years later has managed to dismiss his son This is a rarity and credit to Anderson's longevity in the game That's from Yardbarker.com My favourite cricketing science Do you know what? Are we going to every single time Jimmy takes Pfeiffer, we're going to have to do historical maths. Because it's beginning to feel like that. Like every single time Jimmy takes wickets, now we've got to do, this is connected to lists, to lists, to lists, to the 1800s.

8:05That is cool though. That is cool. It's true.

8:09Jimmy Anderson:That's probably not going to happen much more. Ever again. Yeah. It's going to be, it's very, very rare. Did you, were you aware of that? And did James Sayles say, you got my dad out type thing no I wasn't aware of it until after I can't remember that far back talking of far back the classic photo has also surfaced of Ajit Singh Dale making his first game appearance for Lanx was it obviously there's a photo of Ajit Singh Dale when he's a six year old with Jimmy Anderson like there is of every single single successful cricketer from england it's like oh here's a photo of jimmy 40 years ago i think what we should do because we've got some secret news coming soon with tailenders it may or may not be that we're doing some live shows but we were we were brainstorming wow come on everyone knows we were brainstorming what we could do for the poster maybe the poster is jimmy anderson but us photoshopped in as children a six-year-old i actually really like that should we do that?

9:18I actually really like that.

9:20Jimmy Anderson:Because I've definitely got a picture of me as a kid in cricket whites. You probably have, Fee, haven't you? Yeah, probably. Well, that's the tour photo, isn't it? Sharky, I think we've come up with it. This is a live brainstorm. Fade yourself back in and up. Have I faded up? Yes, you've faded up. I love it. That's perfect. I will set it in motion. Have you got any photos of you as a six-year-old Sharky? They're in sepia. They're the ones that you had to stay still for like 45 minutes to capture. With a big flash. And the photographer's got a curtain over his head. Well, look, pop into the darkroom and get some of those old negatives developed.

10:00Jimmy Anderson:And then we can get them on the photo of Jimmy. Jimmy now, but with us then. Okay. Yeah. I really like this idea. I think... But in my head, it's us, but our faces now, but we're six-year-old bodies. is that really weird I think that is quite weird it's weird both ways if it was our adult bodies with child faces that's also I think just us as kids photoshopped next to Jimmy but now I do think that would be nice consider it dumb my three year old niece was having a very good time watching Jimmy Bowl sent a video we were cheering Jimmy on she was shouting come on Jimmy at the TV enjoyed that yeah it was brilliant sweet that's for it that's that's strange that you mentioned that because my mate also did the same thing with his kid and I haven't I've not I should have forwarded this to you sorry Jim look this is this is very young tailender Freddie who's my mate Will's son watching you on YouTube here we go look oh Jimmy Jimmy that's it so nice start them young do you know what I had it when I said I think it's it was quite fascinating actually because I think Jimmy is such a nice word for a child to say about a sports star because when we're watching your tv it was like you're a sort of superhero and a superhero taking wickets called jimmy it really goes into a sort of three-year-old's imagination like oh jimmy that's my guy difficult to get him to save my time with this one isn't it working on that so we talked last episode jimmy about you coming out of the selection meeting and feeling a little bit stressed at the the burden and the new you know responsibilities you have as captain how did it all pan out when you were in North Hans on on day one extra things to think about as you look back on it now did you enjoy that match as captain yeah I loved it I loved it I think um it's probably just like having had a full winter like three or four months just training with everyone getting to know everyone really well the excitement for the first game and then seeing how hard everyone's worked and having to tell well I didn't have to tell them but obviously coming to the decision that some guys wouldn't make the final 11 you know it's really it is tough and I think you know I just the way my mind works is like I think about absolutely everything so I'm thinking about what we're going to do at the toss how will the wicket play what the weather conditions for the week what you know what team are they playing so you just you've got lots of things going through your head and I think as I get more used to this then that will quieten down and become a lot easier and then when you've just taken you know a stack lot of wickets in the first innings you're bowling well you said you weren't bowling your best in the second but you still took three wickets you've then got to put yourself to one side and go right I'm not bowling now I've got to try and work out how we get these wickets did you find the mental load quite tricky to balance with the physical low because there's a lot going on and even that last few overs you're there going oh my god how do we we've got to dig deep and find something somewhere i'm lucky that we've got quite a few senior players in the team so i'm trying to chat to a few people and get their takes on it see if i'm missing anything or whether we should be doing something different just get their opinions really and try and find the best way to move forward but the other thing about it as well is afterwards when you're in that like i've played in so many games when the team the opposition have finished nine down not just for Lancashire but with England as well but then when you're captain you're like is there something I've missed is there something I could have done to get that get us into a position to win the game and you just constantly like your brain's constantly ticking like did I miss what did I what could I have done better is there a reason that Tom Hartley bowls that last over Jim was it just was nothing happening for the seam as I was locked out by the last hour yeah it was it just gone so flat just trying something different when you've got 20 overs with a new ball you're sort of like, the seamers should be in the game for that period of time but we fielded for 100 overs so there were tired bodies and as I said the pitch didn't really deteriorate that much so it was just a bit of a, yeah I've got to say it's a great time for county cricket, it's a great era for county cricket, Jimmy's taking wickets captain in lengths, Chris Wokes was taking wickets all the England players involved, places up for grabs.

14:29Loads of kids coming through.

14:31Jimmy Anderson:Lots of openers doing quite well. Yeah, openers with that slot. Ben Folk's doing really well. Jamie Smith doing quite well. It's really interesting, isn't it? Totally. That competition for places there. Ollie Robinson bowling all right. Robinson bowled well, didn't he, apparently? Yeah. I'm going to see him next week. That'll be interesting. He got five for, didn't he? Did he get five for? Yeah. I think so. Where are you seeing him? I'm going to Sussex next week. Oh, yeah? Yeah, yeah. I'm going so much Cali cricket on Sussex Friday. week after that I'm going Gloucestershire with matching and maybe you Greg I think we're going to come and see you at Gloucestershire Jim I'm going Chelmsford maybe see Izzy maybe see Essex Izzy's playing at Chelmsford on the 18th I'm going Surrey this weekend to get on the pitch for the first time actually what are you doing this weekend Greg I'll see you there probably Sunday come and do a little pitch walk we're going to do the first one of the season try and do a little Sunday that'd be nice yeah yeah lovely you're going to be like you know like in football where people tick off every yeah the 92 grounds no you're gonna be like that well i did take a fall 18 for the other project that we won't mention i did think like oh should one of us be going to all the county grounds and then greg said don't take on more work than you need to as usual so i banished it from my brain mr let's go to every fa cup game yeah but that's the thing though but that's what we're on do just go to county cricket for fun like how we used to to relax to enjoy cricket that's what I'm going to do but maybe write a whole book and film about it later exactly we've got a running joke me and Fee which is we do something really nice and in fact we were on the tandem right and then sorry to keep bringing it up but that was where that's when we started and I was like oh yeah it's been so nice because you asked a really lovely question to me you said what's you know have you noticed the differences in bits of the country and types of people and accents and faces changing the rest of it and then I went probably a book in that and then we're like oh no not everything's a f***ing book I know every single idea it's like oh I must have pitched that just go and enjoy a nice thing and then go to bed exactly because that's what that's what we used to do that's what county cricket was I know but when you when you make your job and when you make fun things into your job it's difficult but anyway yeah really really nice to see you bowling well Jim everyone was very excited and the clips were flying around everywhere I think all the counties have got amazing social media stuff the clips are brilliant the commentary is great big up all the all the commentators that do unbelievable shifts on youtube they're still there rabbiting away eight hours later it's so good can i especially quickly have a shout out to the somerset commentators um where there was a few overs in which the conversation was simply when was the good time for peter trego to go and take a piss and when was it i can't remember i think he was waiting for a break in play that was a good bit of chat lots of unattended live streams of just the roller just oh my god oh my god i showed that i showed that that might be the highlight of my week actually so that one morning we're just putting our boots on getting ready to go out and i just checked my phone and i saw that message from fee going guys get the live stream on now and the roller just goes on down the weekend.

17:46Jimmy Anderson:Yeah, this is actually a... Popcorn, this is box office. This is a very, very serious reminder to all the people doing the live stream. Don't turn it off between innings or lunch. We just want a fixed camera on the mower or the roller or the painting of the lines. Can we start doing that, people? People sharing through Tailenders, that bit of the footage of just on the other end what about what about the the 40 minutes at lunch where people are looking at the pitch as the roller goes up and down or in the morning and just got people like looking at it like that's it as they paint the lines and stuff yeah yeah you want that and do you know what on the stream it's always like 65 people are watching it and I'm always like I bet three of those people are also Sharky Greg yeah that was yes it was amazing so well I can't remember what day it was maybe Saturday morning, I think, maybe Easter Saturday, you were batting, Jimmy.

18:45Jimmy Anderson:You came in to bat. Yeah. And then there was that 10 minutes of watching the roller and then you came out and bowled and took loads of wickets. And actually, that might be the best passage of cricket I've maybe ever seen. I was in bed, eating toast, watching Jimmy bat a roller and then Jimmy bowl North Hanson and there were five down. County Cricket TV, highlight of the week. Right, but when life does not get any better than that, and I mean that sincerely. It doesn't. It was absolutely box office. I was loving every second of it. More roller, more mundane, locked off shots of, you know, just people looking at the wicket rubbing their chins.

19:28Jimmy Anderson:Exactly. And especially Capture It, tellenders out there, if you see a live stream where they've forgotten to turn the microphones off and they're having a chat in the background. because that happens quite a lot during that lunch break. Excellent. It's the best of us, those live streams. They really are. Love it. It's all humanity. I had a few go-wells as well at the cricket, which was nice. Nice. Cheers. I did have a panic on the first morning. I forgot to mention this. So just tossed up. We won the toss, decided to bat, and as I'm walking off, quite a few North Ants members were by the dressing room as you go up the stairs as you go up to the dressing room.

20:07Like, have you won the toss? I said, yeah. They're like, oh, you're bowling then? I was like, no, we're actually batting. Should I be bowling? I started second guessing myself. Yeah. They just presumed that, oh, it's 4th of April, looks a bit green, you're going to bowl first, but the lights were on and stuff. Maybe they were playing 4D chess with you though. Maybe, maybe.

20:32Jimmy Anderson:maybe well well done to Northants as well for hanging on George Bartlett 95 not out at the death it's you've got to hold your nerve in those situations so it's a really good game of cricket there's some amazing games of cricket all over the place we were all I say all me and Felix and Sharky and loads of amazing tailenders turned up to Middlesex Gloucestershire on the first day of the season at Lourdes on the Friday it was Good Friday and it was absolutely freezing it was so cold I turned up 25 minutes after play started and you were saying this on the last episode Felix you you don't want too many runs in a session you want it you want it to be great you want it you want people grinding it out leaving the ball if you hit before you're in trouble and you're going for lunch you're in trouble nothing stupid I turned up maybe maybe 35 minutes in I've missed 10 overs yeah and the score was 13 Yeah.

21:27I don't think they scored a fourth. I don't think a boundary would score for like two and a half hours.

21:31Jimmy Anderson:No. Biggest cheer of the day was for the first boundary. Yeah. Well manifest and it will arrive. Okay. Some great, great tail enders in attendance. It was a perfect tonic. Great crowd, man. Really good. Susie Boy score book again. That was getting passed around. That was brilliant. Quite an easy score on this one, given the lack of scoring. Lots of dots on that one. Oh, there was a big argument between Susie and tail ender Jack, because Jack took a bit of the scoring, but changed it from uppercase to lowercase. Whereas Susie had already the house style from Susie was already uppercase and he went in there and made a real mess of it.

22:12Jimmy Anderson:Anyway, look, I've got a list of shout outs from people. Felix, please stop me if you've got any bits of the story to add to this. There'll be something here that you'll definitely laugh out loud at. So Hobnobs were shared by Ella and her dad, John. Go well. Neil and Isabel showed us the Jack Russell DVD, which would be perfect for the tap modern. Lots of Playfair annuals were purchased by me and distributed to people. Did you buy loads of those? Did you buy me one? I think you did. I bought you one, yeah. I've got a great photo of Izzy looking at her own stats. Yep. Izzy Wong turned up. Great to sit and watch cricket with Izzy Wong.

22:47One of my favourite photos was, it felt like a professional photo. Someone had taken of Izzy sat next to Sharky. Oh, right. Yes.

22:55Jimmy Anderson:Yeah, the official Lord's account was taking power shots at the tail enders. Yeah. Sharky sharing his Mars bar around and Diet Coke. I'm worried about Sharky's intake. We've got a Sharky chocolate-based story, which I'm going to get him to come and tell you about, Jimmy, because you'll love this. The Queen of Tailenders, Ellie Oldroyd, was there. Go well, cheers, Ellie. Radio 1 Newsbeat legend and fellow golf enthusiast to you, Jimmy. Callum Leslie was in attendance Sharky stayed there all day and all night went to the pub with all the tail enders afterwards and most importantly Steve with his jelly babies his human being jelly babies and Sharky would you like to pop up now and please tell everyone your favourite chocolate bar I fade it up?

23:40yes you fade it up

23:42Jimmy Anderson:do the same questions to Jimmy see if he gets it oh and by the way sorry to Steve because Sharky graciously accepted a jelly baby from Steve but then tipped the entire bag into his own hand and said I just want the orange ones I just want the orange ones It was like the whole thing was just a trap Now I ate them He ate all the others but he really wanted the orange ones Go on do the game that you did with us He's like a squirrel he's still burrowing the jelly babies in his cheeks the orange ones for later I turned up with several chocolate bars, one was a bit random and I asked the atelenders and tenders if they could guess the chocolate bar I had so can you guess the chocolate bar I had in my bag the wording he said to me which will live with me until my dying day he said I'm the only person I've ever seen eating one of these which made me immediately think do you watch yourself in the mirror eating it

24:45Jimmy Anderson:what chocolate bar is it It's so rogue and old. It's ridiculous. Oh, I must see myself eating this. I see myself eating this only. Oh, God. Jimmy. Can I have any clues? Just think old school. Just first. Just have a quick early shout. Old and obscure. And we'll tell you how far off the mark you are, because you won't get it. Well, I immediately thought Caramac, but that seems too exotic. That was a guess that we had, and it's not a bad guess. Understandable shout. It's got to be older. I think it's got to be older than that. Yeah, you're like 100 years out. It's sort of, it weirdly is wartime.

25:21Yeah, it's... Is it a bar of chocolate? It's a bar of chocolate. Okay, you've got to imagine you're Nicholas Lindhurst in Goodnight Sweetheart and you've gone to the shop and what would you pick up at the confectory stand? I can't think of it as an old... I'm thinking like peppermint cream. Oh! Go on, that's what it... The other one.

25:42Jimmy Anderson:No, it is basically... Correct. That's right. That's basically it. That is it. Go on, Sharky. A Fry's chocolate cream.

25:55I can't believe that.

25:58Jimmy Anderson:Sharky's favourite chocolate bar, Fry's chocolate cream. A Fry's chocolate cream. I like a chocolate cream. There you go. There he is. And that's from the top. All right, maybe that's in the photo, the tour poster as well. We've got Fry's chocolate cream in our hands as a six-year-old. And Jimmy's dressed like Dad's Army.

26:18I've got so many photos of Sharky with confectionery.

26:23Jimmy Anderson:Amazing. Well, it was a great day. So, yeah, thanks to... Go, well, cheers. Neil and Isabel, Charlie, Mark, Michael, Chris, John and Ella. Cheers. In fact, Ella was the first person I saw in the... Oh, no, sorry, Ellen was the first person I saw in the ground. And I was the first person to see her, and she was the first person to see... I was her first person. And I said, what's going on? She said, oh, I was here for the tail ends thing, but I've come on my own, and I've never been to Laws before. and we were like, well, let's go in together. And we all sat and I think she made loads of new tailenders friends.

26:50Jimmy Anderson:That was great to have Ellen there. Some solo tailenders. Freddie and his mum were there. Oh, Freddie. I gave Freddie a Playfair annual. That's the first time he'd seen it. And I said, this is the dorkiest book in the whole world. But I know you'll love it because he was a big cricket badger anyway. He goes to sleep listening to tailenders, which I tried not to be offended at. Well, if he falls asleep at this audio version, then he will be asleep within one time for the Playfair Annual. Oh, right. He'll miss his shout-out with his sleep. Freddie, wake up! You've got a shout-out. Freddie! Someone's stealing your Playfair Annual.

27:27Jimmy Anderson:Abby and Josh, Alex, another Steve, Sam and Erin, Jack, Jackie and Husband. Oh, the husband is the guy that brought along Lords Monopoly that we all signed. Sarah, Ellie Oldroyd, Izzy Wong. And apologies to everyone that we've forgotten. Kirstie, there was Kirstie was there. came kirsty sounds like you took a register i know yeah you done well to remember that it did it did feel like a nice school trip which we should make that into a an annual tradition it was so nice and just a classic cricket thing that everyone turns up amazing some people turning up on your own which i do often to stuff but like within about an hour everyone just getting their bearings and then before you know it everyone's having big chats about Cricket in memories, loving cricket, fries, chocolate creams.

28:50Jimmy Anderson:He's buried himself in a coffin for days. Counted to 100 ,000 on camera. And even recreated Squid Games, all in an attempt to go viral on the internet. But it all started when he gave a homeless man$10 ,000. So is he a philanthropist reshaping capitalism? Or is he just the king of the attention economy? Find out on Good Bad Billionaire. Listen on BBC.com or wherever you get your podcasts. Time. Matching! Hello! Hello!

29:22You alright? All good? Yeah, all good, mate. Sorry I missed you last week.

29:26Jimmy Anderson:I know, but you were doing your own cricket adventure, weren't you? I went to Ely. Is that how you pronounce it? Yeah. Went to the Ely Ship Inn. play some beach cricket. And a little shout out. This is the east coast of Scotland, not in Cambridgeshire. That Ely. And yeah, this is the amazing pub with Graham, who's a tailender and invited us all to go there. Imagine you've taken up the opportunity and did you go and play some beach cricket? I did go and play some beach cricket. We organised a little game, had a few tailenders come along. Human being, tailenders human being ones. If you hit it into the pub garden, you get to win your own height in beer.

30:02Nice. I didn't manage to do that. but you should definitely go down in the summer. They've got games going all summer long. They have proper matches when the tide goes out. Oh, so beautiful. What a great day. It sort of reminds me of when Pink Floyd broke up and Dave Gilmore's somewhere in the country doing Pink Floyd songs and Roger Waters is somewhere else in the country doing Pink Floyd songs. That's what it was like. Pink Floyd. Theo, you going to come down for Gloss Langs? Definitely. You keep checking every other day for the last two months, so I better do. I've arranged tickets now. Greg, I've got you a ticket as well.

30:35So what are you, are you going Friday? Next Friday? Friday, yeah. Jimmy, can you try and win the toss and open the bowling? Yeah, sure. Just for you, mate. Thanks, buddy. Well up for it, mate. Doing loads of grounds this year. Yeah. Might have missed chat, but love to do as many of them with you as possible. Let's do it. Let's follow Jimmy around, stalk Jimmy around the country. Do you want a quiz?

30:58Jimmy Anderson:Can I just check with your, yeah, I do, I really do want a quiz, but I just wanted to ask a couple more things about your beach cricket adventures because you encouraged Tens to come down so people showed up, right? Yeah, we had, I don't know, 20 yards? That's nice. That's great. I mean, that's enough for two teams, pretty much. And did you feel like that was... 20 yards, good, in Swiss Scotland. That's amazing. Yeah. But did you feel like that beach cricket was a format for you? Did you feel like at home with that format? I think that's my best format. Because, of course, you're King of the Sea is what I'm getting at.

31:29Exactly. I played in Willacombe last summer. I think beach cricket is my best it's where I perform best yeah I think I want to put together the ultimate beach cricket team who would you think would be the best beach cricket players in history that's a really good question what would the characteristics have to be

31:44Jimmy Anderson:I feel like Joss is quite sort of surfy and beachy he'd be quite good you have great hair the bellews in the in the sea air you need great hair and yeah you need to look good when you're like diving for a catch in the sea and it splashes everywhere I think Izzy's quite beachy I think she'd be quite good I think she'd enjoy that Yeah. I always remember clips in newspapers growing up of when England touring West Indies and they're having a game on the beach and Jason Galleons batting on the beach, that kind of thing. Holding a beer at Slip. Yeah, I think that looks fun. Is it a spinners game or do you need good seamers?

32:20Jimmy Anderson:Hey. Nice. Lovely.

32:28I wasn't expecting it to order.

32:30Jimmy Anderson:What's he saying here? Are I faded up? Yes, you've faded up. Did you fade yourself up to laugh at Jimmy's joke? I was going back to beach cricket. Didn't Malinga famously grow up on beaches, windy beaches, and that's why he has that action, because the ball would blur around. So he wanted a flatter action. Oh, I misremembered that. I think that's true, because also it skidded on, didn't it? Because if you can't hit the angle of the slightly wet sand, then it might kick up, because otherwise it might just get stuck in it. That's a great fact. Did you alter your bowling style or batting style? Were you WG Grace at the seaside?

33:09Jimmy Anderson:Basically, yeah. I didn't do much bowling. I'm a terrible bowler, but batting-wise, yeah. I just went for the pub garden every time, basically. Slog it. Hit the ball down the ground for six. I've seen one on your Instagram doing that. It was beach bas ball. Yeah, yeah. That's beach ball. That's beach ball. Yeah, okay. he'd be great at beach cricket he he looks like he's always dressed for the beach so i think that he'd be good at that feet up sunglasses on yeah let's have a quiz then what have you got for us well i was watching uh jimmy this week on the on the live feed and i was just i was so inspired and we forced jimmy to play a lot of stupid quizzes so today i want to kind of take stock of his incredible longevity and turn it into an original quiz format right so jimmy's career basically runs alongside modern history and today we're going to pay homage to that well i asked for you to get the guitar out welcome sorry welcome to jimmy's timeline and length thank you for having us on jimmy's time line and length so it's just it's greg versus fear okay i've picked some music i thought yeah but yeah and you're doing the music but also you're playing but I've picked some of Jimmy's most famous wickets that span modern history and I'm going to describe them paint a picture with my words no dates, just vibes and Jimmy you can feel free to chip in afterwards to add a quizzical element to it Felix and Greg you've then got to pick a moment in history that you think closest lines up with that wicket so it could be anything you want a world cup, an election, an album release a random cultural moment and then whoever gets closest to that date, it will really kind of highlight how long Jimmy's career is celebrated.

34:58Sorry, I'm trying to get the guitar ready. Explain, just explain that to me again. So I'm going to describe a wicket, okay, with your musical accompaniment. Is it a Jimmy wicket from the past? It's a Jimmy wicket of the past. And then you've got to give me a moment in history closest to when you think that wicket happened. What the f***? I didn't try to explain to Sharky. You went, I don't really get it, but crack on.

35:19Jimmy Anderson:No, okay. it's good though let's try it let's see if it works it's trying to highlight the longevity and wonder of Jimmy's career so for example if it was like you described a wicket two years ago against whoever it is Australia be like oh that's the year the Queen died exactly and whoever gets it closest to that closest to the pin you get five runs whoever's got the most runs at the end wins a Jimmy Anderson signed old biography the one that I wrote the one that you wrote okay Okay. Paperback. Welcome to Jimmy's Timeline Length. Sophie, could you add some atmospheric music to this, okay? Okay, yeah.

35:59I'm going to poetically describe one of these, one of these, one of these wickets. Can you hear this quickly? Yeah. Before the records, before the roar of lords, before 500, 600, 700, there was a morn in old Trafford a nervous young man's fingers finding the seam and a ball that swung just enough to begin everything playing for his home county on his home ground he is quick and raw and full of promise that nobody quite knows what to do with yet he runs in the ball swings away late Ian Ward of Surrey gets an edge and a career explodes into life that will span more than two decades more than a thousand first-class wickets it begins here quietly on a tuesday morning in manchester and scene that was really good i was seeing it okay it's lovely what it's really lovely what what um what date do you think was uh close oh so jimmy tells us today what no no jimmy can you remember that yeah your memories yeah very good yeah yeah so okay so yeah so jimmy tells us a date or not no no you just gotta give me a date which you think would be closest to that a cultural moment fine close to that to that date yeah okay um so i think that's is it i should know this as i've written two books but i think 2000 and oh do i say yeah do you want okay i think this moment I've just remembered this moment because whenever I see Jimmy getting a young Ian Ward out and starting his journey I think of the same year The Strokes Room on Fire was released aka 2002

37:47Jimmy Anderson:ooh okay Indie News Room on Fire their second one second I think that's I might be wrong I think it was 2003 yeah you might be right okay I've got some good effects going here but you think it's 2002 okay are we on together we're against each other no against each other oh I mean it's hard enough remembering what happened in 2002 it's a really hard one I this game's so hard remember a historical thing from the year 2002 okay um but this is it's just showing highlights longevity yeah that's what we're doing no no i get i get i get the thing was that my i think it was my gcse year okay was it you're not that young or was it a as is a bit older well my a levels were 2004 so okay okay so what what what month did you do your gcse season i guess it's may it would have been may it was when jimmy made his debut that's then may 2002 okay that route felix you were 531 days away because um that album was released in 15th may 2003 so greg right may 2002 was when that wicket was taken five runs what has just happened there I don't even know what that that was like I don't know how you've worked that out because the album was released a year later so Greg was closest to that Greg's thing does that make sense?

39:34Jimmy Anderson:I did my GCSEs I don't think I should win that alright let's do another one that was a test that was the easiest one that was the easiest one Matt do you have any cultural events that would have lined up? Were you just going to Google what they said? I was just going to Google what they said.

39:58Greg, for the listeners, what did you get in your GCSEs?

40:03Jimmy Anderson:Oh, I don't know. I think a mixture of A's and B's, really. Oh, that's good. Okay. Well done, mate. Congratulations. I mean, I don't think about it that often. Okay, here we go. Maybe I should. There is more proud of them. Let's see where in history we're going to go now. What do you get in your GCSEs, Jimmy? I got two Bs, six Cs, and three Ds. What do you get your Ds in? I got three A's, two Bs, two Cs, two Ds. Ds are in science. Ds, I imagine science, and I think, what would the sort of woodworky thing be? DT? Yeah. I don't think it was called that then, but... Probably called woodwork, wasn't it?

40:49yeah home economics making a little cricket bat

40:52Jimmy Anderson:nice cooking isn't it making some making some cheese and toast Max what did you get in your GCSEs? I got two A's in English and art and then a smattering of B's and C's and then an E in maths which I had to retake yeah Chalky what do you get in your GCSEs? Fade him up did you your E in maths is because you've always thought that five was the most you can get so anything anything over that you were like beats me mate his A's in English and art actually track because of his skills absolutely yeah communication skills imagination creativity sharky I faded up yes you faded up did you say that at the start of each French or an exam je ne sais quoi I faded up in do French just Spanish I got 4 A's I got 4 A's 4 A's and 4 C's so the stuff I liked I did well in the stuff I didn't do didn't like I didn't do so well in 4A's 4C's is good were they GCSEs or old levels?

41:54they were GCSEs I'm not that old I did do GCSEs and I got D I got D as well I got D as well in art you got D in art got D in art yeah have you still got the drawings that you did at a tree of GCSE art anywhere please don't you do I can't be using them for a talk one I remember most of them were based on sort of heavy metal albums that's probably why I got a D. Yeah. I can totally imagine that.

42:20Jimmy Anderson:I found out what Am I Faded Up is in Spanish. Go on. Estoy desvanecido. Oh, that's good for the Flamenco episode. Yeah. Estoy desvanecido. Okay. Cool. I'll use that for that one. And what's your fade up? I'll put it in. Si, estoy. Yeah. Okay. Next round. Fee. Here we go. Yeah. Music. Can you remember when this was? 99 souls have been sent back to the pavilion. To reach 100, he must first survive. He must come back from the wilderness, from the injuries, the doubts, and the sombre late-night phone calls after quietly being dropped. He must stand again at the top of his mark and believe. It has not been a straightforward road to this point.

43:08Jimmy has been in and out of the England side, hampered by injury, remodelled and rebuilt. But here he is now at the Oval, and the man at the other end is none other than Jack Callis, one of the greatest all-rounders the game has ever seen. Anderson traps him for an LBW for two. 100 test wickets. The crowd rises. The landmark is made. And seen. Jimmy, do you remember that? Yeah.

43:39Okay. All right, I'm going to go.

43:42Jimmy Anderson:not that long after 2002 is it my only references are gonna be either fulham football club or the strokes or music i think we are i think we i think fulham are about to be relegated before roy's great escape in 2008 okay do you think it's 2008 i'll go oh god I've changed the year to make it interesting I'll go for 2000

44:14Jimmy Anderson:I'll go for 2007 and we need what was the Roy Hodgson thing? I thought we were about to be relegated and we just appointed Roy Hodgson, wait and see what happens okay, the greatest game I was gonna, what have you gone for Greg? 7? 2007? Is it later? I was gonna

44:38I think I've got it horribly wrong then I don't know what have you got Jim because Jack Callis

44:44Jimmy Anderson:was he still playing then I in in my head I've got 2004

44:56hmm well that could be horribly wrong so I was going to go for David Beckham's free kick against Greece oh nice

45:03Jimmy Anderson:what happened in 2007 yeah I might be out I might be I can't think I mean I can only really think it's the year I it's the year I started at Radio 1 there you go 2007 well Felix wins that because it was 11th of August 2008 oh nice very good not 2004 Jim I should know these facts only four years out of my own career. What do you remember about that wicket, Jimmy? Can you give us some colour? Yeah, it wasn't out. If they had the review system it would have been overturned. It was an in-swinger hit his pad outside the line of off-stump. Would have hit the stumps but I'm pretty sure it was outside the line.

45:50So mad. Yeah, so how long later are you still bowling? 18 years later you're captain of blanks. Is that right? Okay, last one. Thank you for having us on the last one. Last one laughing. Fee, music. In the foothills of the Himalayas, where the mountains watch the cricket and the air is thin and clean. Oh, Fee, where's the music? And the air is thin and clean and ancient. Our Jimmy must run in one more time and try and make history no fast bowler has ever made before. 700. The number hangs in the sky like the peaks above anderson arrived in dama shala the fifth and final test carrying 698 wickets like stones in his pocket two more and he would stand alone in history the first ever bowler to reach 700.

46:44699th came with a flourish shubman gil imperious on his way to a century had made the mistake of poking the bear gill taunts him it's time to retire two balls later the stumps were disturbed the centurion was walking off and anderson was on 699 the bear had bitten back then came the hardest part the spinners took over the afternoon slipped away the himalayan night faded and anderson went to bed one wicket short of immortality he had to wait patient as the mountains that surrounded him when morning came he ran again kuldeep yadav got an edge and the wicket-keeper took it, and quietly on a cool March morning in the foothills of the Himalayas, Anderson James Anderson 7-double-O became the greatest wicket-taking fast bowler the game has ever seen.

47:38Mmm. Nice. Very nice. Memory, Jim? I can't remember it, yeah.

47:49Jimmy Anderson:It's only a couple of years ago. Do you remember being as patient as the mountains that surrounded you overnight as described there not really okay this is the famous dalai lama trip isn't it yes it is not patient for that well that might be my historical fact okay this is the famous occasion in 2023 where jimmy didn't go meet the dalai lama because he'd rather have a sleep yeah that's a 2023 yeah i can't think of any historical events Did the Queen die in 2023? Maybe. I think the Queen died in 2023, didn't she? I don't know. Either that or the Dalai Lama. It's 2023 and the Dalai Lama has been left hanging.

48:30Is that your cultural moment? Yeah. It's a cultural moment. Yeah. Okay. Or the Queen. It was actually March 2024. Oh. Oh, what? See, this shows how the longevity. We all learnt something.

48:45Jimmy Anderson:exactly oh I thought they were in India in 23 oh no because it was before the oh f*** it was before the summer then he got his 700 that summer which was only a few months later Elizabeth II died on September 2022 so it was oh wow so wow this just shows yeah let me just say one of those bees at GCC was in history was it but do you know yeah do you guys I don't have any good date clearly don't have date recall at all I had it the other day though like where you know you know as you get older like I always forget when I get coffee or whatever but whether I've tapped the card or not and I was like I can remember what's next week's quiz facts about music and sport from when I was six in detail but I can't remember whether I've just tapped that card on that machine or not this could be because we've rotted our brains with the internet yeah I think it might be like short term attention is like really yeah do you not have that yes yeah but this basically I stopped listening 20 minutes ago it's a difficult thing like the especially the you know the cultural event or whatever it's difficult in that period there's not been really anything there's not been like a 1066 has there you know what you're like yeah otherwise yeah well I guess pandemic 2020 that's like a bit that was a big you should have done Jimmy's Wicket from 1066 then we would have known it.

50:15Okay, music.

50:16Jimmy Anderson:That's when he got out. That's when he got James Sayles great, great, great, great, great, great granddad out. Yeah. Yeah, remember it nipped it back a fraction that actually wasn't out but was given out on field. Nipped it back. William the Conqueror, but he referred it upstairs. Yeah. He went, you're on screen now, William. You can change your decision. That's out. But of course, they had to do reviews in those days with that camera that Sharky took got his kid's photo taken from. So you had to wait for it to be taken for like a week and then you could see the photo. you're right, you're not out, carry on the game The wicket at Hastings is moving a bit I'd bowl first Dan, it's a slope at Hastings Sea Breeze Sea Breeze coming in, Jimmy take the far end I think DRS would be a brass rubbing Hang on, just waiting for the to come through now Brass rubbing?

51:07Is a brass rubbing like an unveiling of an image

51:17anyway thank you for playing jimmy's timeline hello you well thank you so much for me you're welcome

51:21Jimmy Anderson:loved it matching as ever no it was great it was ambitious i would say it was ambitious but it was original this is one this is one of those where you should have given us a little bit of prep time with that just to name something i think it made it better okay so um we'll do can go well in a second quickly thank you to everyone who sent in their ideas for the ecb two-page powerpoint presentation which they were presenting to themselves the findings about their own failings and then presenting their own failings back to them and then ultimately deciding that their jobs were safe the mock ecb two-page powerpoint presentation thank you to james and jonathan and francis and ross and tris who have said that their powerpoint presentation would have have one page and it would just say back the leadership to correct, not restart.

52:09Jimmy Anderson:Also, avoid reactive leadership reset. Another one, practical changes needed, runs, wickets and walkie talkies. Title page, option five, give it a whack. Option six, can people not understand we're in the entertainment business? Option seven, we prepared too much. Option eight, we prepared too little. option nine if we prepared too much or too little we'll do the opposite next time nice and there was a great suggestion that england should also implement an alan partridge three-point plan as seen on the live dvd from 1998 which was entitled think act that's it

52:52i've just got a vision then that in that slide they were they were like projecting really quick subliminal messages to the press in between the two slides it just went done yeah
