In short
The episode is a crossover-style chat mixing cricket talk with “quickfire” off-field questions. It starts with Tailenders welcoming Jimmy Anderson and Match and Tendulkar for the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy podcast, then shifts to Izzy Wong returning to discuss England’s white-ball tours and a long segment of playful “what would you do” scenarios from listeners.
Guests and backgrounds
Jimmy Anderson, England Test fast bowler (discussed as extremely fit; mentions a hole-in-one in golf; recounts being headbutted on a school ski trip). Izzy Wong, England women’s white-ball player (recently in squads playing India; discusses Charlotte Edwards joining as coach/mentor).
Key claims
England’s T20 series vs India ended 3-2 and is “fair,” with close last-ball wins. Charlotte Edwards is England’s most capped women’s player (figures cited: 23 Tests, 191 ODIs, 95 T20s; Edwards around 309/308 ODI caps). Anderson believes England will likely win the Old Trafford fourth Test, possibly clinching the series.
Notable examples
Jimmy’s “best catch” described as a one-handed diving catch vs Hashim Amla; his “Ashes” ashes-spread idea; Izzy’s service-station order (Nando’s, WHSmith, sometimes Starbucks) and her AeroPress/beans-on-bus routine; listener fantasy scenarios like “martyr run-outs” and “rock and roll” third-umpire catchphrases.

1:05Issy Wong:BBC Sounds. Music, radio, podcasts. Hello and welcome to Tailenders. Hello and thank you for having us on Tailenders. Actually Felix, this might be the last ever episode of Tailenders because we are being replaced from within. Yeah, sorry, sorry what? We cross live to match and tendorka from earlier today hello and welcome to yet another new cricket podcast it's the anderson tendorka trophy podcast with me match and tendorka and me jimmy anderson yes due to uh scheduling conflicts jimmy can't record this afternoon but he is the star power and we need him on the podcast so we're crowbarring in the new section which i came up with early this morning uh how was your weekend Jim?
1:55Good thank you. You're up to much? How are you how are you in yourself? I'm good well we had a T20 on Friday night against Nottinghamshire we lost but we finished top of the group so we've got a home quarterfinal in September against Kent. I saw yeah it's quite a while away. Yeah and now today I'm traveling to Cheltenham for a championship game so I had a quiet weekend just watching the golf at home. You're coming down to the West country hmm it's nice and sunny down exciting waiting for you i would say you're playing too much cricket at the moment jim i don't i don't want to what do you think well it seems like a ridiculous amount it is a lot and there's been a lot of um chat i didn't realize we're gonna get this deep i mean it's half eight in the morning uh yeah we we've had a quite a bit of chat i think the the players are conscious that there is a lot of cricket it's a heavy schedule and i think it's not like the players don't want to play we love playing cricket we feel very privileged to play but obviously when you want a lot of people to come and watch you want the best team on the field you want the players putting out as high quality cricket as they can and I think when you do play a lot can sort of dilute the quality so something that hopefully will get looked at in the next year or two yeah well it's a ridiculous schedule but it's lovely seeing you play okay I know we haven't long so i've come up with a new concept all right yeah so i want to cram as much content in as possible so i came up with this this last night so listeners can learn as much about the real jimmy anderson as possible okay but so you've been asked millions of questions in interviews over the years yeah yeah also popped up on a couple of podcasts recently you're with uh lucas walliams yeah you're with james o 'brien that's two different people by the way it sounded like one person Lucas Williams yeah James anyway you've been up all over the shop so I've challenged myself to come up with some quick fire questions but every question must be original something you've never been asked before in your life okay well in the media yeah okay three overs 18 questions and if any of them you've been asked before you can just get up and walk out the interview it's high stakes interviewing good luck okay one me greg sharky and felix are coming around for dinner what are you cooking for us do you want a three-course meal no just just i feel like i think i'd do a three-course meal for you actually i do um i do a goat's cheese tart start beef wellington main course and sticky toffee pudding for dessert that sounds delightful fault i'm in never have sex again or never play cricket again sex i think
4:49you take over the bluetooth speaker in the lanks changer room what is the first song you're putting on well i've actually been on the speaker quite a bit this year if it's a morning like if it's a four-day game and it's the morning i'd probably put some fleetwood mac on just like low energy fairly low energy but still waking people getting people in a good mood for it for a day's cricket if it's a t20 yeah probably go for something like the minute i'd say too cool to be careless by porsa ah you'll like that if you don't know it you'll love it yeah i don't i'll give that a Listen, what is your biggest achievement outside of cricket?
5:30I got a hole in one in golf, probably. Ah. Yeah. Do you fight in front of Daniela? I fight? Do you fight in front of Daniela, yeah? Occasionally.
5:42Have you ever been in a fight? No. A fisty fight? No. Probably a fisty cuff? No. No. I have been headbutted, though. Oh, when was that? I was on a school ski trip when I was 15. You didn't fight back? I got blood all down my, a new, I got, I think it was like, it must have been 1996. There was this really cool England football for the Euros football tracksuit top. Yeah. And I got blood down it because I was wearing it when I got headbutted. And I told my mum that I hit my nose on a ski pole and then it bled like for a while after. But I didn't want to tell, I didn't want to tell her. Well, she does now.
6:19She listens to this. What did you do to get headbutted? I don't know really. I don't know. I don't think I was doing anything particularly offensive. If you had the power to resurrect any England player from the dead and play in this next test, who would you choose? Probably W.G. Grace. I think that's a really bad answer, actually. Who can I go for? I've got W.G. Grace to bolster the batting and Bob Willis to bolster the bowling. Oh, lovely. Great answer. OK, if I put 1 ,000 grapes in front of you, yeah? yeah and then but i told you that one of those grapes are poisonous and will definitely it'll definitely die from eating it but every grape you eat you get 100 grand how many grapes would you eat none i don't like grapes i don't like grapes enough to try and make money out of eating them okay name one cricketer playing today that you still think we'll be talking about in 50 years time Ben Stokes.
7:22I thought you were going to go Joe Root for that. Obviously Joe Root as well. When was the last time you cried? Happy or sad tears? Probably my last test match last year. Of course. I cried then as well. Yeah, I know. On my shoulder.
7:41What was the happiest era in your career when you've been playing cricket? When were you happiest? When was I happiest in life or... No, in your cricket career. Cricket, specifically cricket, would have been around the 2010-11 Ashes. Probably end of 2009 to 2012 when we won in India. If Lanks were short of a player and he had to pick one friend who's never played professional cricket to come in and do a job, who would you choose? That feels like a question geared up to me answering you, but it's definitely not going to be you. Have you got any mates that are really good but have never made it?
8:18You've never played professional cricket, you mean? yeah yeah i choose my mate gaz like he's playing for um lancashire lancashire he's playing for burney second 11 at the minute with his son and he i've you can see clips now even like club second team cricket which is great and he's got a real competitive edge which sometimes gets him into a bit of trouble with the the law cricket law not actual police um but he's also got a bit of he's got a mad bit of brilliance in there somewhere as well like a an amazing catch or smack smack it for six or a hat trick or something he's got some sort of brilliance in him he'll love that guys big go go out to guys if you're listening have you had an ever had a near-death experience i don't think i have i think the closest to that would be uh when bummer bowled me a 10 ball over kept bowling no balls trying to bowl at my head um i did feel like i just wanted to come out of that unscathed rather than trying to get runs or anything so maybe that but i don't i don't think I have in like in real life not really maybe the headbutt maybe uh what is the best catch of your career I think the my best catch I mean I don't even know if it was televised it was that long ago it might have been in black and white but I caught um I think it was Hashim Amler he inside edged one onto his pad when I was bowling at him and it looped up in the air and I had to run I don't know felt like 10 feet and then full length diving catch and just got my fingers under the ball one-handed so i think that's my um my favorite have you ever sold yourself as an adult if so where hmm don't know if i want to answer that okay move on well the answer's yes we've all done it the answer's actually multiple times
10:06but like not proper like just a little bit it's just i mean this is too much information for this early in the morning okay well actually for any time yeah see it for another pod do you ever get mistaken for another celebrity i don't think i've been mistaken for another celebrity but when alistair cook played for england i used to get called cookie all the time like a lot of fans and then even stuart broad stepdad on a tour of the west indies came up to me one morning and said well bad yesterday mate and i was like pretty sure that wasn't me but thanks i wonder if he gets mistaken for you he did get it he did get that as well yeah he got called jimmy quite a lot weird that isn't it it's like it's like when it's weird ashley giles and triscothic used to get called each other all the time and i don't think they look anything alike yeah you just got dark hair yeah you pull up into a motorway service station what is the dream combination of coffee shop fast food and supermarket you're hoping to find there marks and spencer's costa smith's mcdonald's it depends it depends on the situation if i'm traveling to a game i go mark suspensors a little bit healthier might get some sushi or a wrap traveling back from a game if it's been a tough game definitely mcdonald's yeah lovely stuff you're you are in good like ridiculous nick at the moment aren't you do you feel like we're in good shape yeah i'm i'm in i'm in as good a shape as i've ever been really how much do you weigh now between 80 and 82 kilograms for you to be considered to have let yourself go what would you have to get to the thing is i think when i when i'm out of shape i'm actually lighter but less like less muscly yeah yeah whereas at the minute i've my body fat's low and i feel like quite strong so yeah you look ridiculous where would you want your ashes scattered moving on
12:00you're looking great but where do you want your ashes scattered i don't know really never thought about it never thought about it old trafford bbc studios burnley maybe maybe like this is might sound strange but on a golf course somewhere like on like off a cliff on a golf course into the sea lovely and final question four of the england 11 for the next test match get stuck in the hotel duvan lift they call you to pick four players we're talking two batsmen two bowlers that could play this test who would you pick um batters i'd go phil salt and jordan cox bowlers that's a tough one ollie stone yes and someone else jack leach oh go on then we'll go jack leach yeah let's go jack nice have you ever been asked any of those questions before probably i did i did think that i've been asked like what's your favorite meal to cook or but not for me no um and i've been asked have you been mistaken for anyone before sorry okay well that was three overs from matching thanks for playing thank you for having me on three overs from matching.
13:23Before I let you go, Jim, predictions for the fourth test in Old Trafford in the Anderson Tendorka Trophy. Yeah. What are we thinking? Oh, God, I feel like England are going to win. I think England might well clinch the series. I know a lot of people, well, I know Greg and Felix would love an India win to take it to the Oval 2-2, so they can go and watch the decider. Yes. But I just feel like England have got a lot of confidence from that last game. I think Liam Dawson coming in is exciting as well. He bolsters the batting and he's been in great form with the ball. So I think he could be exciting to watch, especially at Old Trafford where the pitch is generally quite dry.
14:07Can spin. I think for Felix and Greg, a draw might be the best result they could hope for, for something to be on that last test at the Oval. I think there probably will be a bit of weather around. it is Manchester after all but I just if there's five days of play or even four days of play I think England will win yeah because of my heritage obviously my alliances are fluid at all times so I don't mind really so I would like India to win this because I can only really get to the Oval and that sets it all up yeah I think that'd be I think I would love to see a decider of some sort at the Oval or something beyond the series at the Oval because 3-1 up to England there does put a little bit of a dampener on things isn't it but I just can't see I just feel like England are a really good place at the minute Joffre is flying that confidence they'll take from Laws I just think they'll yeah they'll be hard to beat the game uh this week in Cheltenham this is exciting yeah I think I'm going to come along I've never been there but apparently the the college ground beautiful isn't it yeah it's nice yeah I've played there a few times before yeah it's very picturesque very very pretty normally good wicket not great for scene bowlers fairly small ground fast outfield so it could be a high scoring one jimmy thanks for being on the anderson tendorka trophy podcast thank you for having me on the anderson tendorka podcast trophy podcast sorry i gotta say that that's got legs that we listen to a lot of we we listen to a lot of cricket podcasts between us that is right up there that is right up there it's already better than 60 of the ones i've heard it's a crowded market it's a crowded market but that is the best new cricket podcast i think i've heard for a long time and that is the accumulation of matching mining jimmy anderson's mind for seven or eight years and i think you finally cracked it it was extraordinary matching from the profound to the every day guys i really love some of that genuinely those questions were sensational welcome back to tailenders now that we've had the tendulka anderson podcast thank you for having us on the tailenders now that we've had the talent uh anderson sendulka podcast can i quickly before we before we crack on can i quickly say thank you to the person who got in touch with me on social saying none of us have realized yet that the anderson tendulka trophy is in fact the tat trophy.
16:33The Anderson Tendulkar trophy. Obviously, we've been doing the TAT Modern, collecting your TAT that is in fact precious cricket in gold. So all our cricket universes are coming together at the same time. It goes straight into the TAT Modern. Whoever owns it. The ashes always stays in the Lord's Museum. The TAT Trophy stays at the TAT Modern, whoever wins it. Wow. Well, glad you enjoyed the Anderson Tendorca Trophy podcast. We will try our best to get near those dizzy heights with actual matching. You might bolster this episode of Tailenders now. And Izzy Wong's back on. Hello. Hello. Hello. Izzy.
17:25It's been ages.
17:27Issy Wong:Been a while. How are we? It's been a while, Izzy. What's been going on with the network of spies? Good question. Spies everywhere, cricketing. Can't even chant. I guess you can't really talk about that too much, can you? Sorry, Izzy, what have you got behind it? The finger over the lips, realising that it's a podcast. Network of spies. No, but that's spies. Izzy, have you got R2-D2 behind you? That is Lego R2-D2, yeah. That's awesome. Did you make it? Yeah, yeah. His legs move around and everything. That's nice. do you do that during rain breaks or do you do doing that during your great question there is one that i've taken i don't actually have i gave it to the person that we did it we did it we did together in a rain delay it was a sort of space dog sort of lego situation um all over the changing room table that's nice have you ever is it just lego you go for any other model making you do um most mostly lego airfix is a bit fiddly for me whereas lego i feel like i can really I can make a mistake with Lego it just comes back off there are lots of mistakes and then when you're trying to work out where the mistake is it's easier to just rip it apart sometimes I had a nervous breakdown doing a leg doing an air fix a couple of Christmases ago oh yeah I remember that yeah it was a helicopter it took me about two weeks complete waste of time so matching those questions really great I want to ask a couple of them to Izzy because I think they're really good because obviously you travel around a lot with your with your cricket what's your service What was the question again, matching?
18:56It was the ideal three places you want at a service station. Yeah, if you want to go to a service station, what are you thinking in terms of fast food, coffee shop, shop?
19:06Issy Wong:Fast food, coffee shop, shop. I'm going to go with the Nando's at Beaconsfield. Okay. Because if you get the timings right, I think there's two. I think there's Cobham and Beaconsfield. Beaconsfield's just bottom of the M40, so from Birmingham we tend to hit that fair amount. And if you get your timings right on the bus, you can order ahead pick up your food take it back on the bus that's like high level servicing that's a high level service that is international I think from a shop probably a Smith you can't go wrong a WH Smith it's got all the kind of bits that you need and coffee shop not sure about coffee shop usually a Starbucks maybe maybe yeah probably i probably wouldn't go for a coffee from a from a from a service station because i'm a bit of a snob yeah oh really sometimes i take my uh i take my like an aero press with me on the bus what you do what my own beans wow god takes her own beans you take your own beans you're taking beans wow bus beans bus beans yeah so i probably wouldn't go to a But that's just me.
20:20Or is that just for you?
20:23Issy Wong:Depends how things are going. But I often, often share. Sometimes our physio has like a French press that she takes. So sometimes that's just done and it's like a big load. Or sometimes it's like a solo aero press. But we said this before. It's like a tube that's got suction. Yeah, they're really good. We've talked about this before, but cricketers are cricket, golf and coffee. That's it. Yeah, that is the holy trinity. it's like I'm thinking now like because obviously being in a band at all we also spend all our time either in service stations or our place of work and that highlights the difference between an international cricketer and an indie band but you're ordering Nando's in advance and you've got aero presses on the bus and we're 40 years old playing the fruit machines in there for 20 minutes Would you ever go and use the massage chair next to the toilet?
21:12Yeah exactly me getting the massages on the chairs. Always a massage chair next to the door of the toilet. It's crazy. Why is it there?
21:20Issy Wong:Yeah, there's the toilet. I know. I tell you what though, I reckon it's one of the best people watching seats in the services. Oh. Yeah. You get everybody going in and out of the toilets and then you kind of get the urgency of I've just stopped, I really need the toilet and then the kind of the difference when they come out relaxed, relieved and ready to crack on with their journey. That's quite a good game actually. Is it poo or no poo? You look at someone you're like going for a poo yeah they're going for one they look shifty yeah they go shifty and that massage chair is the best seat in the house for it yeah I think the most embarrassing thing in the whole world is is someone seeing you waiting for the one cubicle yeah because yeah everyone's like oh after a poo is there only one cubicle is there only one cubicle in a men's toilet no no no well sometimes depends on the on the location anyway what other questions do we like for you of matching where do you want your ashes spread yeah exactly let's get into that one because Izzy shouted something actually while we were listening back to it just then I don't know if you were saying where you would like your ashes spread oh no I think it would be brilliant if Jimmy's ashes were put into kind of a bucket of sawdust and only to be spread at the Jimmy Anderson end when it was a little bit damp underfoot what just sporadically just every now and again yeah yeah when they call for the sawdust when they're a bit of sawdust alright come on Jim out you come I think it needs to be a special occasion it needs to be a special occasion there's not going to be enough of him there's only 82 kilograms of him test match only maybe special test match special test match I think it's if you're on debut playing for England and you're bowling at the Jimmy Anderson end you get to you get to use the special Jimmy Anderson does it have to be during the ashes bone dust yes oh it has to be during the ashes as well during the ashes yeah so that's going to last hundreds of years then Jimmy Anderson's ashes for the ashes okay Jimmy Anderson's ashes Jimmy Anderson's ashes Angela's ashes Jimmy do you know what I found interesting him saying that when he gets out of shape he's lighter muscle mass because you lose muscle mass yeah he is in very good shape I saw him last week and he was he's just very svelte he's probably the fittest man of the age I've ever seen probably the fittest Yeah, well, Michael Affet was saying exactly that, actually, matching on the Sky Sports Cricket podcast, where he was talking about what unbelievable shape Jimmy's in, actually, for his age.
23:52And I did watch the Lancashire-Yorkshire T20 vitality blast. Are you having a blast? Are you having a vitality blast? Yes, we're having a vitality blast. Where he was fantastic. He broke the game open when it looked like it was heading the other way. Really affected it. It was talking with all the younger bowlers. Just looked like, I don't want to put words in his mouth, but he just looked like he was really in his element. It was like really nice to see a new thing for Jimmy to be doing, you know? It's almost like he's got a point to prove. Do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do. Thank you, Felix. So, Izzy, tell us some things.
24:25So it's been ages since you've been on. We miss you. I mean, we've sort of not, we've not really been on, but we're back now and we're not going anywhere. So let's talk about England. you've been part of the white ball squad that's currently taking on india india took the t20s didn't they three two fair is that fair you don't feel aggrieved at that yeah it's probably fair
24:44Issy Wong:they played um they played some really good cricket to be fair let's be fair so that's pretty fair i think we're fair it's fair three two pretty happy with that i think the two that we won were two really close games off the last ball so that's like quite there's quite a lot of confidence to be taken from that isn't there but yeah overall probably fair particularly their batters were just really came out as hard and it was good series to be involved in uh great fun and it's great that you were involved we loved seeing you back in action so how are you how are you feeling how was it how was it coming out of hand it's coming out well actually yeah it was um it's so good like i just just guess to be back and um yeah yeah feeling feeling good as well so yeah is it difficult so it's the obvious question is it but is it obviously been changes at the top and all of that kind of thing how how is it feeling in there does it feel like a different environment pretty much the same personnel, isn't it?
25:32In slightly different orders, really. And Lottie, obviously. Does it feel like different? Do you feel optimistic? Or, you know, how does it, what's the sense of it you get?
25:41Issy Wong:I feel optimistic. It does, it does feel, it feels different. It feels like, I guess, how things are going on is slightly different. Like you said, though, mostly the same people. Obviously, MR lot coming in this summer. It's probably the biggest personnel change from a player's front. But no, it feels good. Obviously, there's that World Cup coming up this year, 50 overs and then T20 next year so like it's quite an exciting time it's going to take time for I guess changes to kind of show on the pitch but like it's it's really exciting to be around and I think everyone feels like they're excited to be there as well which is is really nice because since national cricket I think it's meant to be exciting.
26:16Totally but it also feels like from your personal perspective like just from us being with you for the last few years you've gone through so much in such as you know for being so young so many highs and so many like low you know you've really gone through like the gambit of a career almost in a few years so it must feel like a buzz for you to be aligned with this team in the team when that new change is happening it must feel good for the future I guess.
26:41Issy Wong:Yeah definitely I think I've worked with Lottie a fair amount from like way back when in the KSL playing for the Vipers when she was there and And then she did like an England eight or probably about four years ago. And obviously at Mumbai Indians as well. So I feel like we know each other quite well. And she knows kind of, I guess, that journey that like I was quite young still, but kind of all the stages of that she's been around and been chatting through that. So it's been really cool, I guess, hopefully for both of us. But I've enjoyed kind of being able to work with her at an international level as well.
27:11Issy Wong:And like she's got so much, so much experience for us to kind of draw on. So I think trying to make absolutely the most of that as we can. the Lottie that we're talking about is Charlotte Edwards England legend no no it's just for those who don't know so but I was going to go in to say that she is only 45 herself so she's very much you know of that era of oh you would have been growing up watching her doing stuff that's quite a cool thing isn't it there's always she's obviously an amazing coach an amazing mentor but also there's the awe factor where it's similar to the England men's team where you've got Brendan McCollum a lot of those players would have grown up Harry Brooke definitely would have grown up watching Brendan McCollum playing his style of cricket you must have been the same with Charlotte Edwards because she was I mean just such a great such a great player oh an absolute legend I think she is the most capped England woman ever really on I want to say 308 let me check I might I might It's loads of ODIs, isn't it?
28:13Yeah. Let's have a little look. Danny Wyatt played her 300th and they pulled up,
28:18Issy Wong:I was watching, the telly was there and they had the list and I was pretty sure that Charlotte Edwards was 308. So do you feel like, so technically that's in Charlotte's hands, but she could now drop Danny forever. We were winding her up on the bench about that and then we quickly stopped. Right. Because realising that she had that power with Dani, she also had that power with the rest of us. We probably just keep quiet. That's so funny. That's so funny. Three, oh, nine. Oh, one of them must have been rained off or something, not counted. 23 test matches, 191 ODIs and 95 T20s. Crazy, crazy. 1996 to 2016 incredible that's so good what a run so it's just great to have her around and be around her isn't it because you'll just learn stuff by just going out for a coffee or just having a coffee on the bus that you brought the beans for we did actually we actually we were both the bus was leaving it was like a 10 o 'clock leave or something and we both walked out the hotel at the same time and we were both on our own and she was like oh where are you going i was like i'm going to get coffee where are you going and she was like oh i'm going to get coffee too i was just going to go to the costa down the road and i managed to persuade her no offense to costa any costa drinkers out there you know yeah choices of your own but i managed to persuade her to come to come to the boot because she was like why don't we go together and i was like well i'd love to get a coffee with you but i don't want to go to costa so we compromised and you're making me think about uh david brent when he's to dawn he's like do you want to go for a drink she's like oh I can't.
30:01He's like, no, no, I've got the beers here.
30:06No, they will just have it in the office. You're just leaning up against the exhaust. Yeah.
30:14Issy Wong:No, no, no. I brought the aero press, Slotty. Get the kettle on. Yeah. The one day series is currently 1-0, isn't it? So their third match is tomorrow, which is Tuesday. Yeah, third match tomorrow in Durham. So, yeah, I think rain affected one in Lourdes it was a couple of days ago and England played really well actually it looks like the game got shortened to like 29 overs which is I think quite confusing I guess I'd be quite confused about that I guess as a bowler it's easy just try and hit the stump slope for the best but for the batters trying to pace that is slightly slightly there's more thinking going on isn't there so not that I know just running hit the stumps but but yeah England chased that down quite comfortably in the end although it looked like for a sec they might not get on for the rain and stuff but yeah series series this i'd drop in durham will be a hopefully a good watch so i missed that because i've been in new york but was there any because that was the comeback of the first time the teams have met since the sort of weird man cad thing is that with anything was there any chat about that did like did anything i'm sure there's a lot of chat about it but did it feel like it was going to rear its head again not really i think there had been a lot of chat about it because i think people have been trying to like hype up the game which is obviously brilliant because hopefully it gets more people involved and interested and stuff but no i don't think um i don't think there was there was too much um worry i guess of of revenge or anything charlie charlie didn't say anything if um if she had anything plotted so she kept that to herself very good charlie she'd be tempted though you were just yeah i really enjoyed is it the day after that she played and the day after it happened she played in the uh oh yeah the rachel hayhoe the Flint Trophy final and she did it as a joke, I think, to Lindsay Smith.
32:00Issy Wong:And I enjoyed that because it kind of, it just eased the tension a little bit. Those sorts of moments are so fun, aren't they? We were talking yesterday, remember yesterday? Last episode about the phrase needle and there being some sort of antagonistic behaviour between the players. We quite like that sometimes. Like Brodie being petulant when he protected, like he was really, remember when he put the bat, kept putting his bat down to be like, I'm in. and calling in after Johnny Bearstall got run out during the ashes or stumped or whatever it was and just go in I quite like petulance is quite fun sometimes isn't it so passive aggressive that isn't it I did see Tammy I think Tammy Beaumont was she was at the non-strikers when deep two was bowling and she was kind of making a point of being almost stood behind the stumps on stage yeah yeah yeah nice it's like backup umpire so I'm not getting I'm not getting gone out of the non-strikers end here that's one of the things that we were talking about last week I'd like to do be petulant during an international cricket match.
32:58Yeah, just have a sulk. Yeah, just been sulking or making your point or just having a broadie moment of changing the bails over. We were talking about this, Izzy, last episode and we have been inundated with examples of things we would do if we had the chance to play professional cricket. And it's not the big glory. It's not winning the Ashes. It's not winning the World Cup. It is not getting a five for at Lords or 100. it's things like I would love to go upstairs for a DRS and be right that would be such a good call for a review and for you what was your one that you loved I was going to say yours was running off after a team to be bowled out as the opener to put your pads on oh come on god what was my one now yeah running off oh no you would have done that surely Izzy you would have done that in matches where you because you're going to bowl the other way round
33:48Issy Wong:yeah the other way round yeah so you're as you've gone into bat you're all out and you run off because you're opening the bowl in? We did that. We played at Old Trafford the other day and I was batting with Sophie Eccleston at the end and we got a boundary off the last ball. So we've gone to run between the wickets, then ball's gone. So I've just kept running because you only get 10 minutes to turn around. You've got to go upstairs, take your pads off, have a drink, put your hat on, get your sunglasses, whatever. And I got back to the ring. Make a coffee, boil the kettle, put the beans in, grind the beans.
Read the full transcript
34:18Issy Wong:That takes eight minutes on its own. Pre-order Lambos. so I turned around when I got to the ring and Sophie Eccleston was still still in the crease and she just looked at me give me a thumbs up and there's no rushing that girl there's no rushing that girl that's lovely though isn't it she's not going to be opening she should take her time you've got to do your stretches just a couple of these should be alright I've remembered what mine was mine was I would love to at 10.15 live on Sky Sports give an incredibly sincere batting masterclass while Ian Ward interviews me. What's that? I really want to hear what people have got.
34:57I thought of one this week that I would love. You come on to bowl halfway through One Day International and let's just say Owen Morgan, he just refers to you before you bowled your first ball and he just says you're a brilliant operator.
35:16That's all I want. I just want to be referred to as a brilliant operator before I bowled a ball. Okay. Also, the dream also is to be referred to by the commentators as a very popular guy in the dressing room. Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's always a nice thing. It always happens to Mark Wood. Always. Because whenever he gets injured, they go, and it's such a shame. He's such a popular guy in the dressing room. You go, oh, that's better than getting 100 wickets. Got loads of friends.
35:44Issy Wong:Was it Roy Keane that he was talking about Jordan Henderson ages ago and how he was getting picks for England and they go he's a great guy to have around the dressing room and he goes what does that mean does he do card tricks what's he doing so good guys with it like what Izzy Wong a wonderful barista to have around the dressing room ok let's start with Jenny's one we've had hundreds of these by the way thanks for sending them please send them to tailenders dot co dot uk Jenny says that she'd like to be the wicket keeper who throws the ball at the wicket when Alex Carey's batting and believes that he has checked with the umpire that the ball is out of play, but ultimately is given out.
36:25That is dark and that's vengeful, but I like where you're coming from.
36:31Issy Wong:It's like the backstory to a sort of villain sort of. Yeah, exactly. It's been brooding for years. She's writing a sequel. How about Martin's one? This is really great. And I think we'll all agree on this one. Go well. You score a clutch ton, okay? really tight run chase but you can only half celebrate because the job's not done oh don't don't I've just melted I've just melted you know don't take your helmet off don't take your helmet off because you've got you've got work to do guys there's a job to be done alright and I'm still doing it so Joe that's just reminding me of I really the thing I love most about in football is you know when a goalkeeper makes a save but you can't really like they make a world class save but they're not allowed to really celebrate it.
37:18So they have to get angry rather than celebrate. Like, I shouldn't have to make that world-class save. And they just start shouting at their defenders because they want to celebrate, but they can't because it's not really anything to celebrate. Oh, a good football spinoff. You could do this with football, obviously, because I can't play football. I've never once wanted to play football, even amateurly, not let alone professionally. There's a really good thing when you score a late equaliser, you run into the goal after the ball you've just you've scored an amazing you run you run in there you grab it and you take it back to the halfway line that's the exact equivalent actually I've scored 100 and there's a job still to be done yeah I'm getting the ball back quick because I've got another one in me yeah exactly Yasmin going well knowing strongly what you want to choose at the toss yeah losing the toss yeah but being put in to do what you wanted anyway and then smugly getting to tell Mike Atherton yeah we were probably would have batted anyway I love it I love it I saw someone on Instagram yeah okay this one is from Marcus he says I'd like to do an end of day interview still in my pads after batting six hours for 85 from 200 balls in the subcontinent heat pitches a minefield yeah men around the bat all day came minute 24 ended on 210 for seven which is a good score given the conditions yeah i'd be mopping my brow and after answering each question yeah it would be a quick interview and ian ward will say go and call yourself down you've deserved it it's so god yeah it's quite yeah it's quite sexual it's quite like yeah i'm sort of overheating here in it yeah wow it's it's basically you want to be the hero yeah this is a lot of this is you want to be the hero and you win but um can i add to that i imagine that person's thinking they're graham thought with a headband on right yeah yeah yeah i think that's what that is yeah it's graham thought as that as the it's dusk the light's faded it's just beautiful dusty plane behind yeah yeah really dust all over the whites as well yeah poetic lovely red red i've got i've got another one that is not about being a hero but i would just quite like it's come to mind i just want to get a i want to get a really good ball but i can't do anything about and gets me a nick off whatever it is and then the camera keeps cutting me to me for the next eight hours on the dressing room with my bare feet up on the rails and i'm just looking into the void yeah just like i'm just processing it i'm not speaking to anyone i'm just staring out into the void thinking about that one dismissal.
40:02I often notice the England top order when they've got out going and sitting next to Brendan McCollum. What do you make of that? I don't know if that's a good move or a bad move is to sort of see if he's cross or not. What's your take on that, Izzy?
40:17Issy Wong:I think there's nothing worse than when you go and you've got out and you've, I don't know, you've got, you've got usually, to be honest, chipped up mid on, mid off and then you go and sit down and you go, in your head, right option, didn't execute and they just go i don't think that's your best option oh because it's like in your head it was it was right you just you just didn't execute it and then in in their head it's like what on earth has she done there that's yeah yeah it's crushing absolutely crushing i think that's the thing i'd hate the most having to sit there all day that thinking about it what do you like just doing a crossword next to brendan mccullough I think best way you can get out is getting run out.
41:01Issy Wong:And then you get clapped off because it's near the end of the innings. And everybody goes selfless. You've absolutely done the right thing. Oh, that's what I want. That's nice. Yeah, you want to feel like you're a martyr. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Martyr, yeah, yeah. Yeah, a martyr. That's great. You got Nat back on strike. Brilliant. Claps on the back as you walk in. You were doing the right thing for the team. and you go, oh yeah, yeah, definitely. Yeah, that's what I did that for. Yeah. Absolutely what was happening. That is why I did that. Yeah. You're right. Yeah, yeah. It's the plan all along. I didn't even give it a second thought.
41:42I just, it was instinctive. Yeah. Now someone get their AeroPress started up. Anyone fancy a cuppa? Sorry, come on. Sorry, come on. All right. Oh, this is good. Oh, I love this one. This is a, this is, I definitely agree with James. Go well, James. He's specifically named a person. He says, telling a copper to move from behind the bowler's arm while batting. But yeah, policeman's great. But I just think anyone, stopping play to tell people to sit down. God, I would love that. Because that is, you've got thousands of people wanting to watch you bat. You can do anything. You're in charge. Yeah. Oh, have you done that much?
42:22Issy Wong:Is he? I'd be absolutely terrified to. Would you? Yeah. stop play it's like calling for gloves I could never call for gloves I think my gloves could be wet through dripping the bat falling from my hand every other ball I would not call for gloves because in my head I'm like you'd look like such an idiot if you called for gloves and then got out next ball got out next ball working off in your clean dry gloves yeah what about you've got to do it one day you've got to do it now haven't you not faced a ball one ball down yeah call for gloves some people some people are very superstitious about calling for gloves right there is there is there are some people that will call they will call for gloves even if they don't need gloves but if those gloves hit hit the dugout or leave their kit bag before they've called for them crisis yeah what sorry sorry if they've they need to come from the bag they need to be in the bag so then they'll call for gloves you have to go to the bag get them out the bag bring them on if you think oh so-and-so's been batting a while i reckon they're going to want some gloves soon get them out of the bag and then they get out that's your fault yeah is that so the gloves don't watch what's happening out there yeah the gloves don't they want to be no context just play the ball that's in front of the gloves have got to come out fresh they've got to be clear-headed yeah the more we do this show the more i'm realizing cricketers are mad aren't they they're generally insane oh yeah that's why we love it how about the amazing moment.
43:47It's proper, old fashioned, hard as nails cricket, subcontinent. Felix, you are 175 not out. Brilliant. Thank you. It's so hot. It's 50 degrees. Yeah. You're sick of that helmet. You're calling for a cap. Oh, no, no, don't. Don't. I can't even, do you know what? I can't even contemplate. That's actually made me well up a little bit. Would you go cap or would you go floppy? I'll go floppy. and I feel like you've just awoken something to me, but I want that so badly, I didn't even know if I'm almost crying at the thought of it. Like, I didn't realise how much I needed that until you just said it.
44:28It's magic, isn't it, that? Yeah. I would have a white, brimmed, floppy hat. These are things that non-cricket fans... Little chin straps you can still run between the wickets? I don't think so. I think it makes it lame.
44:39Issy Wong:Because a very, very low aura moment would be setting off for a single and your floppy goes. Oh, wow. I never thought about that. You don't want your floppy to go and you're setting off for a single. That's different. What? I think it needs to be properly, I don't know. I think at that stage, I think you're jogging for singles anyway and it's very humid. There's not much wind around. I think you're okay. As long as it's not a windy day. You're not wearing a floppy in the wind. Do you know what's also happening? It's like when I'm, how many have I scored? 175, not out. 175, not out, yeah. Yeah, thanks.
45:11And then, so when I'm 175, not out and I've caused a floppy. I'm also batting, in my head, I'm batting a little bit squarer on because I've started to read the conditions a little bit and because the ball's ragging square, I'm just standing up. I'm just facing up a little bit squarer. Anyway, small detail. No, it's lovely. This is what it's all about. This is where the magic lies. Jack says, I'd like to come back for a third spell and gently bowl a few to mid off while my figures flash up on the screen. 10 overs, two maidens, two for 28. Yes, yes, yes. Yes and yes, Jack.
45:50It's so good. So good. There was some really good ones on our Instagram that I can't, I'm trying to find now.
45:56Issy Wong:I think being an umpire, making a decision, they send it upstairs and you're right. And they go, they go, Izzy, you're back on screen now. You can stick with your original decision. And you've got to, you just go, yeah yeah yeah and you do it again just to make sure yeah and as i was saying earlier you're out yeah yeah because that's what i said earlier get rid of that did you and they all sometimes they say well done don't they well done you can stick with your original decision yeah they do say well done well done and then you can hear the commentators in the background going well Well done, umpire Wong, because that's a fantastic decision.
46:40Yeah, umpire Wong. I would also just like to be the third umpire for the day, just so I could do the phrase, just rock and roll that for me. I mean... Who started rock and roll that for me? Can you rock and roll that for me? Who started that? I don't... Is that a TV term? I think it was blues musicians in the 1930s. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
47:03Issy Wong:makes you wonder what they did before yeah before rock and roll yeah what did a third exactly just rock and roll that for me yeah yeah yeah can you can you want that for me there's a clear gap between bat and pad can you rock and roll that for me so good rock and roll that for me can you say that the next mackabee show start the gig can you rock and roll that for me yeah then you start it's a great album title isn't it can you rock and roll that for me. And then you just start and you play marks to prove it. Can you rock and roll that for me? Can you rock and roll that for me? Yeah. Spit It Out is probably quite a good rock and roll-y song, isn't it?
47:38I actually think I could say that in a Maccabee show. Can you rock and roll that for me? Can you do it before Spit It Out? I think that lends itself to it. It's quite serious though, Spit It Out, so I don't know if I should be piercing the moment with saying, can you rock and roll that for me, Umpire Wong? Down the microphone. You don't have to say, you don't have to say, Umpire Wong. No, no, I just did that of a comic effect. I think you should now though. Can you rock and roll that for me, Umpire Wong?
48:13Issy Wong:Umpire Wong is a terrible name for an umpire, isn't it? Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's really, it's not... If Umpire Wong gives you out, you're reviewing it nine times out of ten. Wrong again, Umpire Wong. Wong again, yeah. Umpire wrong more like.
48:31Issy Wong:you can see you can see that the abuse every wrong decision you think oh not another one oh no another one wrong yeah whereas i'm at the other end umpire white and i'm always right so hey
48:47just rock and roll that for me
48:52I forgot umpire. White said not long. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Go on. Two umpires today. One of them's long, one of them's white. Stupid, stupid, stupid people. Okay. Rich says he'd like to be at first slip and not move as an edge goes between me and the keeper. And we just look at each other ruefully. rich you've you've pierced the heart of the essence of something there you just stare at each other and you've got you got that you do that a little bit don't you've got your hands sorry no it's podcast but you've got your hands cupped a little bit to your side i was ready and you're like oh that's that's my zono this is my arc this is my arc that was your arc yeah that's your right i've got my own arc nathan that moment when the batter pulls away and raises their hand just as the bowl is about to begin their run-up they then casually stroll down the pitch and tap their bat on what i can only assume is a crack or a rough patch or something in their eye line yeah don't get me started that's just absolute film as a bowler that is the most
50:03Issy Wong:annoying thing in the world though because it's like that crack has been there for five hours why is it a problem now why you suddenly yeah yeah i can't dan would love a sponsored car with his name on the door that's what started this podcast off really was it mark heilert had a car or no i remember seeing he had a he had a saab yeah at the county ground in chelmsford when i was a kid we used to go and have a look at all the i was about to say armored cars but then armored all the sponsored cars some of them might have been armored i bet ronnie irani had an armored car and they had their names on the door and it was like Saab Chelmsford or whatever and it would have their name but it would be like an autograph.
50:40It would be signed by Mark Eilert but in like big font. Really nice. So Dan, I'm with you on that one. Let's do one more and then we can do some more next week. I feel like this just should be tailenders now, just people sending this in. Yeah, I'd listen to it. And just reading them out. Yeah. There was another one from Joe who said, this is a nice one. Going well. I'd love to be captain sitting in the changing rooms. cameras and batters keep looking up at me and then i stand up and theatrically call the boys in to declare yeah i mean yeah yeah it's very it's sort of just that's conjuring visions of like napoleon or something yeah so nice imagine how great it feels just to be sitting in the pavilion as you've just scored a double hundred and then you have to and and then the rest of the the tail sort of clear it up they chase the runs down and you walk down in your tracksuit and just take all the plaudits but you're sort of fresh you've got nothing else to do you're on top of the world aren't you totally yeah you've had a shower you're feeling great you've got a medal around your neck you've got a big bottle of champagne in your hand yeah come on a stuffed animal these days
51:45Issy Wong:isn't it it's a bottle of champagne and a stuffed animal stuffed animal what not a real stuffed animal like a teddy bear a teddy bear not like a stuffed badger or something taxidermy fox little dog I think little sausage dog well that's Vitality Blast isn't it All right, let's move on. Oh, Sam says, being one of the five men around the bat with a helmet on, hunting for the last few wickets of the last session of a test match, light fading, everyone's chirping. Yes, yes, yes and yes. Tick, tick, tick, thank you. Please send more of them. We absolutely love them. And we need a snappy name for them.
52:22Yeah, we do. Don't know what it is yet. I've been thinking. Can't quite stumble across the good name yet. Someone will come up with something good, I'm sure. Yeah. Yeah. Tailenders at bbc.co.uk. Of course, Greg, you could use the hashtag Tailends the World Unite and Takeover. Takeover. Here's something that Tailenders would love to watch slash listen to. Just wanted to remind you, we mentioned this last episode, that it is 20 years since that incredible 2005 Ashes series. There's a documentary called How to Win the Ashes 2005. BBC iPlayer, now if you want to relive that story or maybe you're new to cricket, and you don't know about that, it's well worth watching.
53:01It's an incredible summer of 2005. Also, Test Match Special has collaborated with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra to tell the story of the greatest series of all time. And that features a specially curated playlist performed by the Philharmonic. It's got TMS Archive narration from the legendary actor Charles Dance as well. It's available Thursday evening at eight o 'clock on BBC Sounds, but will also be played out in two parts during the lunch intervals on TMS on Wednesday and Thursday this week at Old Trafford. And we have been given an exclusive snippet to play. Very well. This is a clip of Simon Jones getting Michael Clarke at Old Trafford.
53:46Okay. The sound. The sound. The sound of this.
53:54The crowds began to gather at dawn on the final day. The old Trafford gates were closed more than two hours before the first delivery. Thousands came to witness but never got in. Cricket, a sport that had had to fight for attention, now had it in excess. And those early wake-ups, the weary-eyed journeys, the monotony of the queues, they were all worth it for one ball, one second, one sound. 2.63 for five the sun shining as Jones runs away from the Stripford end past umpire Bowden he bursts the right-handed Clark out and Bowden that swung in he left it alone and he was horror-struck to see let on the ground that's the same ball that on the telly that was Mark Nicholas doing that is very good very good yeah Jones strikes the oracle again no is that the same thing yeah Yeah, it goes, the swing works the oracle again.
55:02Yeah. I think we spent half a podcast once trying to work out what that meant. No, yeah, the swing works the oracle again. It's great. Yeah. So all of that on BBC Sounds during the lunch break. I play a documentary, How to Win the Ashes, loads of stuff. And all the action live from Old Trafford on BBC Sounds on Wednesday. speaking of the Old Trafford test Sharky has volunteers for days one to four of that test match for the scorebook okay yes we do need someone for day five if it goes that long it might do because there's a bit of rain I think on one or two of the days we still need volunteers for days four and five of the oval test as well so if you fancy scoring please email tailenders at bbc.co.uk yeah I love this this is ticking over guys this is really fantastic to see V can I say I watched a bit of your, you're in New York right now, watched a bit of your baseball coverage yesterday.
55:57Oh, yeah. Very good. It's like you're on CMS for baseball, isn't it? Yeah, do you know what? It's weird because sometimes I do feel matching, because obviously my role over here is being new to baseball and translating it. Sometimes I do feel like I'm channeling you. Like I've had five, but I'm inside the body of matching, but for baseball. Sometimes, which is... an Ian Bell run out from about 10 years ago. Oh my God, don't get me started with that. And don't get me started because they were talking about something that happened when a play, in baseball, when they thought a play was considered done, but then it turned out the ball wasn't technically dead.
56:36And I was like, oh, that reminds me of 2015 or something when Ian Bell thought about, and I was trying to explain that to them. And then they got obsessed. And then they got distracted by the idea that cricket has lunch. And then I was like, yeah, but don't worry so much about the lunch. It was the fact that the bull had gone. The bull had not gone and he walked off for lunch, but the lunch isn't the important thing. And then obviously people, so someone tweeted me going, sorry to be that guy, but it was actually tea, not lunch. The point I'm making is, it doesn't matter. So yeah, that was a bit of a...
57:12Do you like lunch? You said cheese on toast. Well, I'm just chucking in Taylor Lenders references. Do you know what the other thing is? but I got asked it's funny how you manifest things in this life don't you because at one point they did bring a cricket bat out for me and did ask me to do a batting masterclass and I was like I can't do it having said last week all I want in this life is to do a sincere batting masterclass I was like I can't be stood in front of this screen talking about where your areas are you were sent a boat God sent you a boat or a bat and be, but someone's going to kick it up and be like, but he, you're f***ing cricket.
