In short
This episode of Tailenders (BBC) mixes cricket talk with comedy and a discussion of an “army bootcamp” Izzy Wong attended. The main topic is how the England Women’s World Cup squad selection works (phone call timing, excitement, and not getting blasé), plus Izzy’s take on what an army-style leadership/training bootcamp taught the cricket team.
Key claims
the ECB handled World Cup squad videos and selection well; army methods (clear thinking under pressure, leadership roles, role-play scenarios like a car crash) were surprisingly useful for cricket; and cricket “injury replacement” rules in the County Championship can be nonsensical because replacements are based on stats/averages rather than immediate need.
Notable examples
Izzy’s World Cup selection call process; the bootcamp commander’s text about commanding 300 soldiers; and a county match frustration after a spinner’s thumb injury.
Guests
Greg James, Felix White, Izzy Wong, and “Jimmy” Anderson (joining by call). Also mentioned: Matching Tendorka, plus cricket/England-related figures (e.g., Dom Sibley, Emilio Gay, McKinney, Joffre Archer, Ollie Robinson, Mark Wood, Bob Mortimer, Jürgen Klopp).

0:30Jimmy Anderson:at Whole Foods Market. How did a boycott Jimmy become a billionaire from posting videos? On Good Bad Billionaire, we're going to find out how the world's most popular YouTuber, Mr Beast, made his fortune. He's buried himself in a coffin for days. Counted to 100 ,000 on camera.
0:45Felix White:And even recreated Squid Games, all in an attempt to go viral on the internet. But it all started when he gave a homeless man$10 ,000. So is he a philanthropist reshaping capitalism? Or is he just the king of the attention economy? Find out on Good Bad Billionaire. Listen on BBC.com or wherever you get your podcasts. Hello and welcome to TellEnders.
1:10Felix White:Hello and thank you for having us on TellEnders, your weekly loosely cricket-based podcast. This is Greg James, that's Felix White.
1:17Jimmy Anderson:We've got Izzy Wall.
1:18Felix White:Hello. Hello.
1:21Jimmy Anderson:Hello. Matching Tendorka is incoming. so Jimmy Anderson should be incoming it was arranged he was selected for this particular game but there are often dropouts on the day as we know as we've played over the years so we'll see how that story develops
1:47Issy Wong:and
1:48Jimmy Anderson:yeah
1:50Felix White:we need to find someone that's not as good as Jimmy basically
1:55Jimmy Anderson:oh yeah can you can you go and field for them can you go and feel for them greg the worst words ever
2:00Felix White:can you go and field for them oh horrible i don't want to field for us yeah totally let alone those
2:09Jimmy Anderson:yeah anyway welcome to tailenders i want to start with an email from chris who says hello sharknado G-Force, Sir Jimmy, Felix, Matchin and Izzy Wong. As we go into this cricket season, I've got a proposition for you. Does the Tailenders podcast want to be my player sponsor for 2026 for a laugh? Okay. No cost. He says, I'll cover the 25 quid, just purely for a laugh. I play for a very small village cricket team in Hampshire called Clanfield Cricket Club. They have two teams and I'm the brand new second 11 captain. My Tailenders credentials, I've been a listener since 2020. I've listened to all the podcasts.
2:50Jimmy Anderson:I've previously won the Duck Trophy and the Most Improved Player Award in the same year, somehow. I bat with a Grey Nichols tail-enders bat. I have a high score of 50, having scored a total of 150 in my life. And here's what you get in return. I guarantee an Instagram post about the sponsorship. I can guarantee this as I run the club's Instagram account. Cheers. This is Chris Lane. This is Chris Lane, who's the second-11 captain at Clanfield Create Club. and he is requesting a purely ceremonial player sponsorship for a laugh. Let's defer to the professional cricketer on the Tailwinders podcast, Izzy Wong.
3:28Felix White:I think it's the best idea I've heard all week. Oh, I do too. How does sponsorship work with you, Izzy? I don't even know how that works. Do people sponsor your boots and stuff?
3:37Issy Wong:Yeah, I think it's different. If I'm right in thinking club cricket, like each player kind of gets a sponsor and then that sponsor kind of gets on the team sheet and it's Chris sponsored by Tailenders, for example. Yeah, yeah.
3:53Jimmy Anderson:Do you remember your first sponsorship? Good question. Were you excited or like a bat sponsor or something like that? Were you a kit sponsor?
4:02Issy Wong:Hawk Cricket in Worcestershire. Yeah, they were my first bat sponsor.
4:06Jimmy Anderson:Nice.
4:07Issy Wong:You know what? I still go and if I need a bat repairing, I still go and get it repaired there because they're just lovely, lovely people. but I was I was so excited and I still go in there and it's like I'm like an eight-year-old walking in and the whole place just smells of cricket bats and cricket new you know new cricket kit the whole place just smells like it's like Christmas oh wow it's heaven it is when they fix bats yeah so I'd take my bat in and say oh it's got a little crack here or can you just or can you take a little bit of weight off here and yeah good guys Mike Mike Cork oh girl all I wanted as a
4:41Jimmy Anderson:as a kid was to just be sponsored by kookaburra or do you yeah and the car obviously did the car you're obsessed i think i was more i was more in love with being like having a an autographed car i think and like yeah having a bat sponsorship than maybe even playing for england yeah i was more excited by by equipment than i was the cricket and that's maybe gave me my answer as to i'm not going to make it in this game the equipment's the best part though i had my i had my delivery
5:07Issy Wong:of kit like yesterday i opened it and there was just kit all over i've got all over the living
5:13Jimmy Anderson:room it's like i actually that is that's there now please it would actually be annoying to then go and have to like work hard and play with that because oh my god it's so good that's it right equipment is that's that's part of the love of the game right and then you get your own that out on you. Yeah. That's nice. Do you try it all down and stuff? Have you slept with your bat before, right? I beg your pardon. You slept with it in the bed or propped up against the bed?
5:45Issy Wong:I've had it in the bedroom.
5:47Jimmy Anderson:Yeah.
5:48Issy Wong:Yeah.
5:49Jimmy Anderson:I've spent many nights as a kid with just a bat in the bed. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
5:54Felix White:Bernd Leno, the Fulham goalkeeper, told me that when he was young, he knew that he was a goalkeeper because he would sleep in his gloves because they felt so nice you know goalkeeper gloves and like have the palm on his cheek of a goalkeeper glove do you know what i mean like the hat like i get it like how kind of like he felt like they felt he felt so safe in the gloves that he wanted to sleep in them
6:18Jimmy Anderson:that's the only reason i liked football when i was a kid was the equipment yeah i would i would have one of those the ball the ball boys footballs in a net that you would just kick up like it was on a dog lead that kick up as you walk yeah yeah and then i was i was forced to be a goalkeeper but i quite liked it so i would i would also walk around the house with goalkeeper gloves on my mum would be like you've got to take this off now i can really imagine a young greg james walking around the house in goalkeeper gloves but i said it's really good for you know good grip to like pick up glasses clear the table what if something falls off the ceiling i'm saving it it's a sort
6:53Felix White:of inbuilt because you could also mop the table wipe the table down just with your part of your yeah doing the drying doing the drying yeah it's like an inbuilt
7:04Issy Wong:domestic sponge as well and the best part the best part is when you shower at the end of the day it's brand new you can use it again tomorrow you get a really deep clear really deep clear as well because it's like good friction
7:21Jimmy Anderson:it's exfoliating as well
7:25Felix White:Sharky can I ask Sharky because I know he loves wiki gloves and he's got Ben Fokes Sharky have you walked around the house in your wiki gloves or have you slept in them I have walked around them in the house and I will be doing this weekend because I've got sorry I'll be doing it this week because I've got double matches this week Saturday and Sunday I haven't played for a while so I just need to get them used you walk around
7:51Jimmy Anderson:throw a ball into them just get used to it
7:54Issy Wong:I do that with new pads sometimes just sit and watch telly because you want them to fit your leg well so that when you run between the wicket they don't go everywhere
8:07Felix White:because they've been in my bag since September so they'll be a bit all skanky so I just need to soften them up and get them a bit moving do you know what, that really makes sense because I remember that feeling of batting and like before you go out to bat like the first time you've worn pads for age and it feels so alien that you feel so clunky in it all it kind of does make sense to walk around and your legs
8:25Jimmy Anderson:you're running i love seeing people who haven't really played much cricket do village cricket and they wear someone else's pads and they're running with their legs dead straight dead straight like robot legs but both legs flaying out to the side imagine imagine putting smarties tubes on a cat's legs is that
8:46Felix White:don't ever do that by the way don't ever do that so sharky what do you sit down to dinner like your knife and fork in your hands while with wicketkeeper gloves on trying to eat do you take them off i won't do that but you know if i'm doing some work in my office and then i want a little bit of a break i might just stick the gloves on just walk around the house and say just get a ball and just throw it between your hands just lovely just get it get it already and i've got because because i might be doing 75 overs this weekend potentially so i need to do some squats this week as well otherwise i won't be able to walk next week wow that's yeah overs
9:20Jimmy Anderson:in the legs can i make a request from all tailenders and this is this goes for amateurs and professionals because we do know there are professionals that listen please can you i want to make a gallery on the tail end's instagram of of you wearing your kit in domestic situations
9:37Felix White:yes yes yes and yes okay so we want kit kit in domestic situations please get your loved ones
Read the full transcript
9:44Jimmy Anderson:your family your children to take photos of you while watching the cricket dressed in maybe it's white to get used to the feel maybe it's pads maybe it's gloves when you're cooking maybe you You can use Wicked. Sharky, have you ever used Wicked Keeper gloves as oven gloves to take out a pie? Great question. It's a really great question.
10:02Felix White:No, I feel like they make, because they're rubber, they might melt.
10:05Jimmy Anderson:I don't know.
10:06Felix White:No, that was off of protection. I don't know. Sharky, have you ever shoveled spaghetti through a batting helmet?
10:14Jimmy Anderson:No. What could you eat through a helmet? You could do toast through a helmet. I've got a helmet here. I've got a helmet here. Ice cream. Come on, Izzy. Okay, put your helmet on.
10:27Issy Wong:One thing you can't do with a helmet on Headphones
10:30Jimmy Anderson:Headphones yeah For the benefit of taking it Izzy's got hurt Izzy's trying to drink through You bears No drinking doesn't work Not really working is it
10:41Felix White:If you've got a straw it does
10:43Jimmy Anderson:Someone could push a biscuit through I can imagine a breadstick Or you could have water Fix the top of the hat And then a straw going round That is a roundabout way of saying Chris Lane, captain of the second 11 at Clamfield Critic Club, yes. It's a yes. It will be an honour to be your honoree inaugural sponsor for your season.
11:05Felix White:And we should collect some more this year, shouldn't we? Let's start a thing of that. Why don't we have some more people? But let's be very clear, we're not contributing any money towards your sponsorship.
11:15Jimmy Anderson:No, but we'll follow you. We'll give you shout-outs. We'll follow your season. Exactly. Good luck to Chris and the team.
11:25Felix White:Go, well, cheers.
11:26Jimmy Anderson:So welcome to Tailenders. This is the actual start of the podcast now, 10 minutes in. Izzy, World Cup!
11:36Felix White:Come on. She punches the air.
11:40Jimmy Anderson:So happy for you, Izzy. I'm so happy. She munches a breadstick through the grill of her helmet.
11:46Issy Wong:How do you know what I got into at the weekend?
11:49Jimmy Anderson:That is, that's so good. how did you find out did you expect that was that was it was there a tip-off or is it a genuine surprise um when we all find out or had you known before we get told like the day before so we get
12:06Issy Wong:like they do a phone call so they say there's like an hour window and you'll get a call between it's like four and five or something so everyone's getting calls everyone's getting calls you're sat
12:15Felix White:there just by the phone like oh my god that's horrible yeah yeah yeah horrible horrible stuff
12:22Issy Wong:and you're literally and you know it's happening and then you just like and then once everyone's been told you get an email so you get the full squads and then they say don't tell anyone till 11 tomorrow and then 11 tomorrow the um it kind of gets released and stuff can i say the release video did you you must have seen it because and they got i had seen it they got all sort of different people related to sports and famous figures to kind of announce each player and I was like one of the last ones I was going through and I was like oh I wonder who they've got for me and I was so excited to see you guys there and I was like oh like that's like that's genuinely really nice because like we met up a couple of days later on boot camp and we were all talking about who everyone got and someone had got Luke Little and someone had got lando norris and they were basically arguing about whose was best and then someone was like actually i reckon like izzy yours was best because like you know those guys that's really nice oh that's a pleasure yeah no that's great i literally was like ah and then yeah what i like
13:31Jimmy Anderson:about that is that you're all very excited about the things that are exciting still yeah and that's a good that's a good sign for that's true this squad because that is that is just fun isn't it that that they've gone to the effort of getting hold of all these people and actually that's really you can I imagine there's a stage sometimes in certain careers where you get a bit blase about
13:53Issy Wong:that and we were so not blase about it that's good because that's that's but that is you know
14:00Jimmy Anderson:it is a it's a major thing to be selected for a world cup and but also everyone's so up for it everyone's so up for supporting and that's um and i'm pleased because sometimes you might do those videos and then they get lost and you don't think the players give a about it but if you do
14:16Issy Wong:that's really no we really do and i think like it's kind of made us all excited for it as well and yeah i think because we spent we've spent like six months now like we haven't had a series it's like there's been no cricket internationally since the world cup so like all our prep has been like t20 focused world cup focused and it's felt like we've been building up for it so long and like now the squads are released, it's like, okay, like we're almost there. And it's just like around the corner and that's, it's really exciting. I think we're all just really excited.
14:44Jimmy Anderson:We've definitely, well, we've definitely had a go at the ECB over the years for certain things, but it is only right to say well played for that. They've done fantastic with that. Great idea.
14:56Issy Wong:Emily Marshall, Emily Marshall, one of the digital leads for our team. She, massive tail ender. So she will probably listen when you've said that she's done a really good job. So yeah.
15:05Felix White:Izzy do you like when the call happens do you have can you immediately tell from the tone of Charlotte's voice because obviously you you've had disappointments over the last few years can you tell like immediately by the tone of someone's voice that you're in or you're out or is there like
15:19Issy Wong:a little do you know what I mean you used to be able to tell from the timing so I'm not sure if Lottie's timing is the same but yeah previous head coaches have done like the bad phone calls first so right it'd be like 401 your phone's ringing oh no whereas um yeah so i think you can kind of tell a bit by how long and then interesting there's a little bit small talk you're like oh what you've been up to well sat on the phone waiting for it
15:51Jimmy Anderson:to ring uh just get on with it get on with it that surely if i was doing if i was delivering that good news you just call up and just go you're in just immediately via five second phone call yeah exactly i'll see you on tuesday yeah start with that because it's the anxiety of it all but they love it don't they're doing a bit they're doing a bit of tv drama yeah is he wrong it could be you we just gotta cut to an ad brain now i always feel like it must be the
16:24Felix White:worst job to phone someone up and say you haven't made it just must be so horrible but then i think
16:31Issy Wong:there's also like some really good ones as well so they did a really they actually so tilly courting coleman got picked and she's like not played for england yet she's only 18 and they like recorded her phone call and like to listen to that and like how happy like she was yeah i guess that the flip side of having to make the really bad ones is that you get to make the really good ones
16:50Felix White:as well yeah yeah yeah did you feel emotional about it right relieved relieved just like relieved
16:57Jimmy Anderson:yeah and excited but relieved yeah yeah yeah uh izzy first game 12th of june edge baston that's what we do home ground england england sri lanka oh wow fantastic yeah we're excited we've been like
17:15Issy Wong:talking about it quite a lot and that's like the date where it's like this is
17:19Felix White:oh really so happy for you is so fantastic yeah it's great we've been well obviously we've been
17:25Jimmy Anderson:keenly following your career the last few years in like in minute detail and so we've we've been with you on those those wonderful moments like the the first whipple that you did and then the disappointment of not being selected for england and all those sorts of things and then losing some form losing some confidence then coming back into form gaining that confidence again and now look look at you now come on you've taken those knocks and you've bounced back yeah no it's like
17:50Issy Wong:you know what my mum actually my mum actually said how lovely it was that we kind of kept chatting even like when it like it wasn't wasn't really going that well and she was like oh like it's you know you can tell they're nice guys because you know some people like as soon as things stop going well they just that's the last you see of them and they're off but my mum so my mum Rachel was very impressed with the sort of characters flying around on this one
18:13Felix White:you've had like a mad time though haven't you because you've had like you you were so when you first started like came through you were you felt like you were the post on the posters of everything it was such a big deal was made of it and you've had the very typical thing that most cricket is that happens to where you have a bit of a learning chunk where you're like oh working it out again and it all becomes real so I feel like you've gone through quite a lot in the last few years
18:34Issy Wong:probably haven't you internally yeah absolutely and I feel like this world cup's coming at like a really nice time because if it had come even like a year ago I think I probably wouldn't still be as sure whereas now I think yeah having got back into the England side last summer to then spend a winter kind of playing a bit of cricket and really sort of preparing I guess I feel like it's coming at a really good time so yeah it's just so exciting and I guess it makes it mean a bit little bit more as well when you've kind of been in and out a little bit to really makes you appreciate what it is to be definitely picked because you know i can imagine if you just got got picked in your first one and then got picked in every one since it'd be a bit like all right okay another world cup but absolutely yeah i feel like i've really got that appreciation
19:18Jimmy Anderson:yeah yeah great yeah it feels like everyone is excited even if you you know even if you're you're you're you've been regular for the last couple of years i think by the sounds of it at that boot camp everyone was just very excited and sort of relieved to still be part of the setup but actually just back on your point the tailenders are fiercely loyal you can never you can never get rid of the tailender you can never shake them that's the whole point of the podcast it's never say die and actually you've got to follow it through the bad times and the good as Fatboy Slim once said
19:51Issy Wong:there's no point being a tailender if you don't wag when needed
19:54Felix White:of course of course we've had a lot of that with Jimmy haven't we in 9 years, 10 years I mean, Jimmy's had so much stuff. Yeah.
20:04Jimmy Anderson:Yes. He's had so much stuff. And now he repays it by not showing up.
20:12Jimmy Anderson:Enough friendship. I want to talk about this boot camp you did, Izzy. And I think matching Tendorka would benefit from hearing this. I feel like an army boot camp is something that he wouldn't be able to get his head around. So let's wait for him.
20:26Felix White:Okay.
20:27Jimmy Anderson:Oh, in the meantime, I've received a message from Jimmy saying he's trying to join, but he says he thinks his laptop's got a virus.
20:38Felix White:What sort of virus?
20:40Jimmy Anderson:Influenza. It feels very old school to have a sort of... I think he's maybe been hacked by the Russians.
20:56Jimmy Anderson:jimmy's been hacked by the russians so let's just yeah let's just let's just wait and see what happens there okay um sharky's just added something to the group saying why don't you try your phone oh it is we've got jimmy jimmy hello hello hello we worried that you had been hacked by the Russians, potentially. Yeah. But you're okay. Blink twice if you need us to come and extract you from anywhere.
21:25Felix White:Everything okay? I think it's fine. I'm not very good with computers. I turned it on and it's like just telling me... You know it comes up with the writing and stuff. When it's... Oh, God. I have no idea. I'm literally f***ing done what to do here. It's got a lot of the writing and stuff. Yeah. He's opened a Word document. The blue screen of death.
21:50Jimmy Anderson:That's just Sharky asking where you are. But he's got his special code. But the blue screen of death is something that, you know, no one, unless you are smart, knows how to deal with that. Anyway. Do you guys have a name for that?
22:03Felix White:Sorry, quickly. Do you guys have a name for that? You know, it's loading and it's like the spinning thing. Compute's loading. Do you have a name for that? I've got a friend that calls that a crazy pizza. Crazy pizza? Yeah, when it's like stuck and it's going round and round.
22:16Issy Wong:Crazy pizza.
22:21Jimmy Anderson:I don't have that, but I will use that from now on.
22:23Felix White:Yeah, that's correct. So if you've got crazy pizza, then you're all in trouble.
22:30Jimmy Anderson:Well, Jimmy's crazy pizza has been eaten, which is good. And he's here right now. So we've covered a lot of ground today, Jim. Obviously, we know that you were very excited that Izzy has been selected for the World Cup. so we talked about that and we were talking actually Izzy was saying how excited they all were to receive the video and to see how far and wide the word had spread of the Cricket World Cup and I said how nice that was that you're not getting blasé about those sorts of exciting things do you still get excited by promo videos?
23:03Felix White:I mean I don't know if I ever did get excited by promo videos no I got excited by being told I've been selected definitely but it didn't matter whether it was someone from Sky Sports News doing it or not you know what I mean it'd be like I would have you know what I would have loved because I don't know how many of the squad would have known like who was announcing it I wonder if Izzy enjoyed the fact that you know us I would love my mates to tell me I was in a World Cup squad that would be cool what she said
23:39Jimmy Anderson:there you go
23:40Felix White:that's exactly what she said
23:41Jimmy Anderson:great and you can listen back to Taylor to find out exactly what she said or you could just say it again quickly now I'll listen back yeah yeah
23:51Issy Wong:no I was I was saying that it was nice as going through to like and then actually have people that you know and you feel like I've kind of been there with you through it to kind of give you that news was really nice so yeah I was made up I think if it was a competition I'd have maybe won but not everything is a competition in life is it
24:10Jimmy Anderson:the whole team were like well you won because you've got matching on there yeah that's the
24:14Issy Wong:winning well is that Sachington Dolkin's nephew-in-law by step I would love you and Jimmy
24:24Jimmy Anderson:to talk about army boot camps and did it look like you were all having quite a nice time but famously Jimmy has told stories of absolute horror on those sorts of boot camps so what was your one like?
24:36Issy Wong:There were no sort of boxing related injuries in R1. The major who was running our camp actually sent a text to the member of staff that had come with us and he forwarded it on to us as a playing group and the text read something along the lines of, I command 300 soldiers but this week has been one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Best the lap of the world cup i'll see you in a few days but to look after you guys well as in yeah i think because i genuinely found it really interesting and really enjoyed it i probably enjoyed it more than i thought i was going to enjoy it because like you hear you're going to go on an army boot camp and your brain just goes to i'm going to be lying in the mud and i'm going to be cold and i'm going to be tired and there was a bit of lying in the mud and being a bit cold and a bit tired but i did actually find it really really interesting and really useful but i think that quite it was quite entertaining to see he described he was like we're so army and how we go about things as in the army obviously and us as a cricket team was so civilian i think he found it really kind of weird spending time with us as a group being so civilian about kind of about kind
25:56Felix White:of things but no it was it was really good what do you what's the what's the definition of i guess
26:02Issy Wong:like we're not as direct and it'd be like we'd be asking people like we did a it's like a role play task of there's been a car crash and we got split into two groups and it's like right go up and help the help the people out of the truck and make sure their injuries are sorted and call the ambulance and deal with the press whatever oh wow yeah it was like oh um looks like there's been a car crash you know Izzy please can you go and check on the casualty and it was like in the army they'd just be like right go go why don't you go there why don't you phone an ambulance so I think yeah
26:36Jimmy Anderson:I've just made a flat white
26:39Issy Wong:does anyone want a coffee
26:42Jimmy Anderson:can I just finish this and then we'll do it oh please I've just sat down I've got watching the telly got my pads on it's like a hostile environments training type thing
26:54Issy Wong:Yeah, and training, I guess, under pressure and still having the ability to communicate with people. And it was really interesting because these guys obviously take it to a massive extreme, but it's because their job is life and death. And I think for us, our job isn't life and death, but actually how they went about things was so interesting because it's obviously effective because if it wasn't effective, they wouldn't do it when it was life and death. So it's still trying to take bits of that that actually really work and try and move it into a cricket scenario.
27:21Jimmy Anderson:Yeah, absolutely. stop this grenade from going for six catch it, catch it, catch it
27:26Issy Wong:otherwise it blows up a small village yeah
27:31Jimmy Anderson:the next time you're on the boundary and you're about to catch it you'll be like, I'm saving the crowd here from this, literally saving the crowd different mindset, you've got to switch on stop this crowd from getting blown up
27:41Issy Wong:you've got to switch on
27:43Felix White:it was all about clear thinking under pressure I guess, isn't it?
27:47Issy Wong:yeah, and a lot of it was sort of leadership focused, so we were with the officers and they were talking about the different challenges, I guess, that come with being a leader in that and how that looks in different situations. So sometimes it's giving out instructions, but actually like holding tight and letting more people kind of feed you information. And sometimes it's actually taking a step back entirely and leading yourself really well and letting someone else give out the direction. So it was really interesting.
28:12Jimmy Anderson:I think we should do an army bootcamp as tailenders. It could really sharpen us up, couldn't it? Sharpen us all up a little bit.
28:17Felix White:I would hate it, but I think it would be good for me. I think I would leave thinking that was really good for me but I think I would absolutely hate it you'd hate every minute I'd hate being there with you I don't think I could put with watching you try and go through it
28:35Jimmy Anderson:but I think it would bring us closer together I think it might help the podcast we could eventually take down Stephen Bartlett and be the king of the podcast maybe that could be it maybe that's what we need, Machen would you come and do an army boot camp with us? mute you're on mute yep so that's a good start that's part of it you learn that in bootcamp hello
28:56Felix White:hello you can't say hello like that in bootcamp there's no point talking if you are on mute
29:05Felix White:I would cry so quickly in bootcamp I would cry so quickly
29:10Jimmy Anderson:this is why we might need it because we said we'd cry if we're under pressure but this might be it Sharky's waving are you coming to bootcamp is that because you want to be in bootcamp I do not want to be in bootcamp
29:19Felix White:Are you fading up, sir? Are you just fading up? Stop trying to hold the dishwasher with those wicket-keeping gloves on, you f***ing maggot!
29:30Felix White:Put down that rice cream now!
29:41Jimmy Anderson:I was just going to say Matt's mic is pointing at his stomach, so that's my view of why we can't hear him. Do you think we're able to understand you and a microphone point in your gut?
29:55Felix White:This is why we need to go on boot camp.
30:00Jimmy Anderson:Day one is mic technique in a war zone.
30:04Felix White:Is microphone point in his time?
30:10Felix White:Cricket podcast in a war situation. How are you going to deal with that?
30:18Jimmy Anderson:Can you do the go-wells if it's not going well? Anyway, match in. Tailenders Army Bootcamp in.
30:31Felix White:I vote for it. You'd be good, match in. You'd be good. You're a very good team player. Very conscientious. Like physical stuff. I do, yeah. I don't think I'll cut out for it, though.
30:43Jimmy Anderson:I don't think I've got that hard draft in me. Maybe we'll just go go-karting or something instead. Yeah. Laser quest? Yeah. I don't like go-karting.
30:51Felix White:I'm scared of go-karting.
30:53Jimmy Anderson:Okay, well, why don't we just all go to the cinema? Yeah. Yeah. And have a burger afterwards. Okay. That good? All right. This is summer at its peak. 31:44Issy Wong:Guess who we're talking about yet?
31:45Jimmy Anderson:That's right.
31:46Felix White:Good Bad Billionaire is exploring the life and fortune of football icon Cristiano Ronaldo.
31:52Jimmy Anderson:That's Good Bad Billionaire from the BBC World Service. Listen now wherever you get your BBC podcasts.
32:03Let's do that. Jimmy
32:05Jimmy Anderson:can we can we talk about can we talk about cricket please can we talk about the county championship and how are you how are you I'm good how are you had a lovely week off
32:19Felix White:very nice week have you yeah mate I bet
32:23Jimmy Anderson:I bet still the last week you take in a champ and you're not even playing so put that in your pipe not even playing disappointment against Durham but that's the game isn't it but did you feel good how's the body recovering?
32:34Felix White:Yeah good I felt good all year to be honest I wasn't expecting to play all four games but injuries and stuff have kind of meant that I've needed to. Yeah but also just good rhythm in it, just feeling good probably Yeah I mean we've had a good start we've won two games, we've not played great but we've done enough to win two out of four. We lost at Durham and they played brilliantly on the last day but we so we this injury replacement rule so we we lost our spinner Arab Shetty broke his really badly broken his thumb in like three places and he's in operation and we were told we can't replace him with Tom Hartley who is like a spinner because he's too experienced and he's played test cricket so we had to we didn't have another spinner with us so we brought a batter in and then on obviously on day four on a day four wicket a spinner would have been ideal just to take not just you know because it would have turned a little bit but also takes a bit of pressure off the seamers and we had to bowl much more than we would have liked in the first innings and then you're not as fresh in the second innings and then again we're having to bowl more than we probably would have it's just really frustrating I'm so confused by this because the substitute hasn't been picked so how can how can you judge that they're not that they're too good because if they were too good there'd be a reason for them playing this week Yeah, that was our argument.
34:02Felix White:But literally, I mean, I don't know what the sort of protocols are. I think they just check Crickinfo, the stats, and whether the averages are better. It's just, it seems daft. It's like the whole reason, surely the whole reason this replacement thing has been brought in is because for situations like that, someone's broken a finger, there's no way they can take part in the rest of the game. We've got a light-for-light replacement there. It happened to us at Gloucester as well. and it just feels a bit yeah a bit nonsensical
34:32Jimmy Anderson:well it's just like don't offer it if you can't do it properly that's the thing isn't it let's do an injury replacement but if you can't actually do it properly and it's like what are they trying to guard against are they thinking oh maybe he deliberately broke his thumb so you could get the better player in maybe that's what's happening here I feel like with your cricket brain we could solve this what's the solution here
34:55Felix White:Well, I think you need a paramedic on every ground. And they get assessed to see if the injury is real or not. I think there is that. Because you get a lot of people that fake injuries to try and get the replacement. That's not the issue. No one's going to fake injuries. Yeah, but that's the worry. But that's the worry, isn't it? people are going to fake injuries and they can bring someone better on this. I don't think that, I mean, if people do that, then I think that's horrendous and it's down to the physio and the medical staff of that team. It's down to their integrity to make sure that that's not the case.
35:39Felix White:Yeah, but that's what's not being relied upon, the integrity. So maybe the opposing medical team has to review the player and say, yeah, actually, he is properly injured. Yeah, that's not... I'll pass that. I think that's the disappointing.
35:53Issy Wong:thing is like as a county if you're then tossing up making a selection call between two like for like players and one of them's got more experience according to the laws by than the other you're more inclined to pick them because you can replace them with a like for like and then it means that it's going to be harder for guys that haven't got that experience to actually break into county
36:12Felix White:teams so true it basically means that i've got to play every game because there's no point me resting because i can't then come into a game i can't be a replacement ever so i've just got to play every game and then if I get injured I get injured.
36:25Jimmy Anderson:That's mad.
36:26Felix White:So you're then putting more pressure on people getting, you know, there's more chance of me getting injured if I try and play every game because do you know what I mean? Does that make sense?
36:35Jimmy Anderson:You are quite literally irreplaceable by the laws of this stupid thing. So, but you also, yeah you couldn't replace anybody else. No, I am
36:42Felix White:I can be replaced because no one will have, in our squad's got the same experience but I could never replace someone else which seemed, again That is nuts.
36:54Jimmy Anderson:But you could argue it the other way and say, well, no one could replace Jimmy because they haven't got the experience. I'm afraid that's unfair in a different way. But no two players in any team are the same? No one's the same. It's the whole point of a cricket, of a squad, is that everyone's different and offers different things. It's ridiculous. So you've just got to clone every player then, shall we? Just clone every single player so they're exactly the same. Or just not do the rule.
37:19Felix White:What about this? What about if you could only pick players from your under-18s team? So it's a wild card.
37:26Jimmy Anderson:What, a load of kids?
37:27Felix White:We've just got loads of children.
37:29Issy Wong:It's exam season. You can't be doing stuff like that.
37:32Felix White:That's my actual nightmare, to be waiting in a county championship game and saying, oh, now you're batting six for Lanks.
37:40Felix White:And I'm 16 years old, thinking I don't want to bat. Why is this compulsory national service or something? You're 16.
37:47Issy Wong:Dean, you've been pulled out your GCSEs, driven to Old Trafford and told you've got to replace Jimmy Anderson. Your teacher breaks into the class.
37:56Jimmy Anderson:You're opening the baton against Olly Stone. Bye.
38:03Jimmy Anderson:I'm revising for Oxbow Lakes.
38:05Felix White:Get in the f***ing team. Get in the minibus. But your average is four for the school team, so you're the only person that will do in the whole of the county. You only have to accept.
38:18Jimmy Anderson:that's it get an under under 11s in next time just get some kids in I don't know if you said it
38:24Felix White:but someone said get rid of it and I think that I'm leaning towards that because it's getting I think just not have it but saying that we'd have had nine men at Gloucester and down to ten at Durham so I don't know
38:37Jimmy Anderson:yeah that's a shame
38:38Felix White:Jim what's your pick up sorry Greg I was going to ask Jim because you bowled at Emilio Gay and McKinney didn't you on that day four no gay got 100 What are your little talk about him joining the England side in that potentially vacant spot at the top? Do you rate him? Yeah, I thought he played really well. He got another 100 this week as well at Lourdes. He's been around for a while. He's a nice player. He always thought he was a good player when he was at Northampton as well. And McKinney, I played with McKinney at Manchester last year. Nice lad. I think he's got a lot of talent as well. So they've both got probably different strengths actually, different types of players.
39:13Felix White:I think McKinney's a little bit more aggressive, if anything. or can be. But yeah, I think they're both excellent players. Can you imagine them playing international test cricket? Or is it obviously hard to judge? If you're going on runs and stats, then you'd say that certainly Gay potentially deserves a chance at some point. You can never tell until they're in that situation whether they're going to be good or not. But definitely, they've got to be close, yeah.
39:40Jimmy Anderson:Jimmy, we had Tamar Mills on the show last week and we asked him to pick his England men's test bowling attack. Did you hear what he said? And if so, do you agree? And if you didn't hear what he said, what's your attack?
39:57Felix White:Of course I heard what he said. I listened to the podcast in full.
40:04Felix White:But luckily there was a clip on social media of it as well.
40:12Felix White:It's a clips-based economy. yeah I mean I can't remember who you picked now did you pick Josh Tong Josh I think Josh Tong's got to be in I thought he was one of the standouts in the winter and he started well with Notts you mentioned Joffre obviously he won't have played any longer form cricket because he's in the IPL for a while but I think if he's keen and fit then he plays the other one I'd throw into the hat you just mentioned Ollie Stone he just got a load of wickets for Notts I don't know if he's played a huge amount this year but looked like he was bowling well this week so I've always liked him I think he's you know he's got pace and skills so i think he he's obviously been around the international scene a little bit before so i potentially yeah maybe chuck him in there in the hat yeah it was quite a heavyweight attack yeah but then you've got you've got likes of gus who's played for suri
40:57Jimmy Anderson:this week the last couple of weeks he was talking also about sonny um sonny baker and ollie robinson
41:03Felix White:as well yeah i think sonny baker is definitely someone who i know that the england setup like obviously played in white ball cricket last year but I think having seen him in red ball cricket this year again he's got pace, he's got skills so I think again someone who will be there or thereabouts the thing about Ollie Robinson is there's no doubt he's a good bowler it'll come down to the other factors around that there was issues around his fitness when he has played for England I think in the test matches that he played he came off the field injured four times out of like 12 tests or something which is or maybe 20 tests which is a lot like if you think about it not being able to get through a test match is quite a big thing so I think that side of it will come into account with him but yeah there's no doubting that he's a quality bowler
41:51Jimmy Anderson:who are your picks Izzy? don't care
41:58Issy Wong:I'd agree with Jimmy it's okay if you don't care agree with Jimmy screw Jimmy it's a first point of call
42:03Felix White:Dom Sibley got 170 something yesterday me and Matching saw him hit a six. So if that hasn't caught the attention of... Why do you say that with a surprise? Because he doesn't normally. He normally just carves it. I'm sure he's capable of it and other things, but he normally just carves it for one, doesn't he? Carves it for one? Or chops it. What would the word be? He kind of plonks it for one, doesn't he, through mid-wicket and blocks and leaves, generally is his game. But he was getting expansive yesterday and scored... Was it a six over mid on? What was the six? What was it? It was a six over mid...
42:36Felix White:Yeah, a six over sort of mid-wicket. Yeah. You know what? But he's got a great on-drive. He really has. He has got a great on-drive. I think it's a good time to pick Dom Sibley. I think he sort of really knows himself, I think. He'd be putting less pressure on himself. I think in the balance of the batting, he wouldn't be under pressure to score quickly because everybody else is and would be a nice little anchor there. I think it might be quite a nice time for Dom Sibley. You've asked me my bowling attack. What is your batting, your top seven, please? okay well i want to pick i want to pick people that i want to hear from okay so yes i want to opening the batting for english barack obama yeah because yeah no galaga so okay this is felix's charisma 11 no i just want to hear because let's let's let's just be real about it we have to hear from these people when they get hundreds two or three times a day so and keep in mind so that's the voice that i would be hearing more often than anyone else so so i think i want because they've conducted good interviews recently i like a tribe it's a tribe i think he just he just seems like an engaging personality honest i like emilio gay because i thought he was funny and real and talked about his game so they're opening top two who do i like else battle jacob bethel free okay the rest of the team is obviously you got to pick ducky avenue but bethel free i want to see harry brought back this year for obviously Joe Root five, Ben Stoog six who's a wicketkeeper?
44:10Felix White:who's got a good chat as a wicketkeeper Jim?
44:12Jimmy Anderson:Johnny Bairstow
44:13Felix White:Johnny Bairstow's back in seven, yes
44:17Jimmy Anderson:yes and then if you're bringing Sibley back I'm bringing Bairstow back
44:22Felix White:he's not actually in that team to get rid of the parameters I've just set if I was picking England's test team I actually would pick Dom Sibley in it and thinking who's going to score runs for us this summer I think Dom Sibley will score big runs for England this summer around the rest of the team you know you know like when um
44:39Jimmy Anderson:a batter gets a runner maybe Dom Sibley could have a charisma interview person and so maybe you have Sibley batting but then I love that goes and does the interview I absolutely love that so
44:51Felix White:every cricketer has a designated charisma interview they have a they have a yeah they have
44:56Jimmy Anderson:like I guess it's like a spokesperson yeah so if they don't want to do the interview you get Zach Crawley batting but you send out Ace of Tribe or Kevin Peterson just to do some mad interview
45:08Issy Wong:no just send out
45:09Jimmy Anderson:just someone mad to do an interview
45:11Felix White:I think this is a great question and it leads me to ask Jimmy, not that Jimmy always need that because you are charismatic personalities if we're going on Chris, I'd have played zero test matches that's not true in your own way you're extremely charismatic actually but if you were to select someone give in no you are you're very charismatic you're just
45:33Jimmy Anderson:I know I know I know who it should be you're the most handsome boy
45:37Felix White:in the world you're very special in your own way in your own way you're extremely charismatic no no but you're just the man of few words aren't you in interviews right
45:47Jimmy Anderson:who would I send out Jimmy gets a five for yeah who are you sending out
45:50Felix White:who's your charisma does it have to be a cricketer no oh but no I was thinking Mark Wood it'd be Mark Wood every time yeah
45:58Jimmy Anderson:okay The correct answer is when you get a five foot or you win a test match, then you're sending out Bob Mortimer to do the interview. Oh, yeah. That is the right answer. Okay. Sorry.
46:10Felix White:It's such a good idea. Any personality for England does your interview for you. Do they do it in your voice? Or do they just do their own interview? No, they just go out. They embody Jimmy. I'd love Bob to do it in my voice.
46:22Jimmy Anderson:Yeah, Bob, we're amazing. Izzy, who are you picking? Which mad person are you sending out to do your post-match?
46:28Issy Wong:I think Jurgen Klopp. I think that'd be brilliant. Heavy metal cricket. Yeah. The biggest oxymoron going. Heavy metal cricket.
46:35Felix White:Very, very, very good. This is such a good idea.
46:37Jimmy Anderson:I don't know why people aren't doing this. We don't want to hear necessarily from someone who's knackered and just done the thing. And can't say anything and isn't allowed to say anything. Can't say anything interesting. The parameters of it. That's so true. You don't like it.
46:50Felix White:When you're knackered and then you get shoved in front of Jonathan Agnew, you just don't want to be there, do you? Well, I can only guess. What questions are you going to ask me? I don't really want to answer.
47:03Jimmy Anderson:Yeah. Bob Mortimer would lap it up. Bob Mortimer. Bob would love it. Well, he's sitting there telling Jonathan Agnew about having a bath with Chris Rea and putting an egg in. Yeah. That's what you want to hear, isn't it?
47:16Felix White:So we're getting rid of concussion substitutes, but we're introducing charisma. Medious substitutes. Charisma substitutes.
47:24Jimmy Anderson:Charisma substitutes. right there you go and that's that it's so good
47:29Issy Wong:I'd love to see the alternative team photo of the kind of charisma substitutes all lined up on the benches afterwards
47:37Jimmy Anderson:so what I'd love from tail enders this week a lot of homework for you this week this sounds like blue Peter now so what I want is I would love photographs of village cricketers and professional cricketers in their pads and gloves in domestic situations around the house Jimmy we were talking about how obsessed we are with kit and how obsessed you are with kit as cricketers and how you like to wear some of the stuff in to make sure it doesn't feel too stiff on the day so we want pictures of you stacking the dishwasher with your weekend keeping gloves or mowing the grass wearing your pads that sort of thing we also want your charisma replacement 11s okay who's the ideal team and who's the charisma 11 replacement that's the that's i'm very excited for that tailenders at bbc.co.uk should we do the go wells and then leave everyone alone let's do that matching i'm aware that you haven't said much i was gonna have a quiz but we'll roll it over but i like hearing from you and i know yeah could you maybe do the go wells and i'll just sort of sit back for a bit yes i feel like i've i've put i've put a shift in a shift in it's matching your charisma substitute great you are my charisma substitute all right the the go wells are in they're in the chat
48:51Felix White:charisma is so good where
48:58Jimmy Anderson:there should you do a chat got him but if he is a charisma that means I can just go and have breakfast yeah I can't see these in the chat can you can you email them over to me
49:10Felix White:they're just on the chat is it public chat
49:12Jimmy Anderson:public chat
49:13Felix White:you click on that and then at the bottom I guess oh hang on
49:16Jimmy Anderson:let me just share let me just share my screen there you go yeah i got them

51:44Jimmy Anderson:They're in Southampton, the National Oceanography Centre. Warminster Garrison Cricket Club, who are touring in Bordeaux, darling, for a bit of cricket, mainly the wine, I imagine. Derwent Drinkers Cricket Club as well. I imagine you're involved in the wine tour. Wednesday Cricket Club, Old Californians Cricket Club, Hyde Forth's team, Green Sox Cricket Club, and Wiston Parish Cricket Club as well. Go well to all of you. Cheers! Cheers! But only one engagement. Jake and Beth.
52:10Felix White:Buy that one. No good ones.
52:12Jimmy Anderson:Cheers, go out. Jake and Beth. Or more commonly known, Jacob Bethel. Jacob Bethel. Run well. Jacob Bethel. Run well to Linda, who's doing the Milton Keynes Marathon. Tom broke the world record on Sunday at the London Marathon for the fastest marathon run in cricket kit. Oh, I saw that guy. He looked great. He looked like Graham Hick. He was like pretty, pretty, he looked pretty big. I don't mean big as in he looked sturdy. I didn't see him. He looked like a very together top order batter. He ran the marathon in three hours, 19 minutes and 28 seconds. And all the pads and stuff, thigh pad, arm guard, gloves, full whites, jumper, helmet, mandatory.
