In short
Tailenders episode mixing live T20 World Cup commentary (England vs New Zealand in Colombo), debate about England’s campaign and spin bowling, and a “Team of the 21st Century”/“vibes XI” discussion plus listener quizzes and shout-outs.
Guests
No traditional guests; main hosts are Greg James, Jimmy Anderson, and Felix White (plus Matching Tandon/“Matching” appears via audio/producer notes).
Key claims
England are winning but “not impressive,” with Harry Brook’s 100 and a likely spin-heavy semifinal scenario; Simon Jones’ omission is debated; England’s “annoying” setup could still win the tournament.
Notable examples
Brook’s back-foot six; England needing 80 off 33 (then later 43 off 18, then 12 off 8) and winning by four wickets; 2005 Ashes as an emotional reference; MrBeast “Good Bad Billionaire” ad segment (coffin, 100,000 count, $10,000 to a homeless man).

05Hello and welcome to Tailenders. Hello and thank you for having us on the latest episode of Tailenders. Hello. What is Tailenders? What do you mean what is Tailenders? What is it? You normally say what it is. Oh, it's your weekly loosely cricket-based podcast. Great. I believe the only one on this lovely globe of ours. this is g-force greg james we've got sir jimmy anderson you just heard from felix white and you heard a big hello from matching tendulka hi matching hey guys great to be here well you were so excited because uh sharky's not fully in situ on site for this episode is he but he's from afar producing it and matching was supposed to come in the end but we've given you the green light to be on the whole episode and his face is like a puppy that's just been let out the door sharky likes to use me as like a salt jar kind of figure coming on last 10 minutes but um he's not around so here i am we also think there's sometimes great value in you being in the starting 11 exactly and that is what is happening on today's tail enders we have a developing live cricket situation at the t20 men's world cup england's men are already through to the semi-finals they're currently in action.
24They're playing New Zealand in Colombo. And we cross live to the sporty minimalist flat for a maximalist analysis of what's going on. We're live in South London. Felix White, what's the latest? Thank you for having me in Peckham, Greg. I can't actually tell you at this specific moment because Sky Sports have cut to adverts. So currently Roy Keane's just getting his hair cut. But the game situation is with eight overs remaining, England needs something like 80, I think. Curran and Banton are batting. 65. Thank you very much, Jimmy. And it feels like, very much in keeping with Gareth Southgate's last campaign, that England will continue to keep winning, but we don't quite know why or how.
09Back to you in the studio. Thank you, Felix. He'll keep us updated throughout the match. Go, well, cheers. No, is that Chapman you did? No, that's not Mark Chapman. And it's more of a sports reporter on a, maybe a Five Live doing a match report. Yeah. But it's quite rock and roll football back in the old days on Virgin and Absolute Radio. Do you remember? They'd trawl a bit like this. Yeah. It's a bit like this. We're crossing live now to Ellen Road. Yeah. It's quite Pugach, I guess, to a certain extent. It is quite Pugach. And I say that with love because we love Mark Pugach. We love that. Joe, what I noticed the other day that we haven't brought up, you know how sports reporters always go at the end of it, chapman does it he goes as well that's his link in so another do you know what i mean as well yeah but i think that's because their brain is looking at the next thing and they're like they're also looking at every single score is that what it is it gives you a second to compute ah gives you a second to go as well let's go to old trafford and it does that don't they let's go to old trafford well exactly it's that's actually just so interesting because when the mccabees did interviews last year lan said to me a few of them you say great question a lot and i was i've picked it up from tailenders but he was like i've worked out why you do it because when you say great question you're you're thinking of the answer oh right i thought it was also that's your as well positive affirmation for the interview uh that they think they've that's true great question I'm just hearing news that Sharknado is listening across this as he's just buzzed me to say, it's because someone's talking in their ear.
56And that's absolutely right. Yes, there'll be constant talk back from the producers shouting to Mark Chapman saying, goal at Ellen Road, goal at Ellen Road. And then so here we go. As well. As well. Goal at Ellen Road. Here's Nesta McGregor. oh my that's so interesting i've never actually thought that's what it is do you have your own as well greg when you're doing live radio probably lots of little vocal tics and crutches i can't think of them i don't know them because i'm the worst person to ask probably oh yeah what's is there is there a wicket uh wicket at the cricket my touchline reporter jimmy anderson just from his lunch has alerted me of a wicket and uh as we speak mitchell santner is doing a left arm spin action but he has not actually been involved in the wicket sam curran has gone for 24 england 105 the chase is on back to you in the studio as well as well well i can't tell you what happened with the wicket actually if ratchi and vindra love him with the wicket sam curran tried to slug sweep caught the boundary jimmy what do you think about england in his campaign like are you impressed with him or impressed that they're winning games somehow as well yeah Yeah, impressive winning games, yeah.
12I don't think they've been impressive, particularly, apart from Harrybrook's 100. You know, they've been okay, but they've managed to get all over the line. And I can see the same happening today. They need 60 off 33. Will Jack's just coming to the crease. He's having a very good tournament. Doable, right, M. Yeah. Could happen. Slow wicket. Yeah, so they're in the semifinals, that 51 ball century, as you mentioned, James, by Harry Brook in the second wicket win against Pakistan. That was a brilliant knock. I love it when he just bats like a mad spider and he is just all legs and arms and jumping around.
50And I think it was the six off the back foot, which was my favourite. The back foot weird six that no one else can really play like that. His unique character is Harry Brook and he does those magical things and that's why he's so good and so dangerous. James. James Anderson. My worry is for the tournament is that, just watching England lose England, I know it's in Colombo, but I feel like we're getting to that stage of the tournament which can happen in the subcontinent where it's very spin heavy. England going in with two seamers today and 15 spinners. I know Fee loves it because he loves his loopy left arm.
32stuff he loves Adil Rashid correct Ray and Ahmed playing today I just I want to see some pace and good bowling skillful quick bowling what just you don't like watching it is that what you're saying no I don't like I don't like watching people rotate the strike in the middle of the innings I mean I think the most fun thing is either a back foot six as Greg mentioned there with Harry Brooke the pull shot over over midwickier yeah or when someone comes charging down the wicket and the ball just nips past the outside edge and they look absolutely ridiculous they're the two best things about spin ball and the rest of it is absolute couldn't disagree with you more on that one jimmy anderson that's great oh my days that's what that's what we want coming out fight him with this but yeah this is i mean we've said it's the big cliche now anything can happen in a t20 but uh this this has got england winning it all over with a quite ropey campaign and suddenly somehow we might well be in the final um back on harry brooke just quickly information purposes stat bombs look out take cover it's time for another stat bomb statistic incoming harry brooke has now scored a century for england in all formats and then he joins the ranks of david milan heather knight joss butler and tammy beaumont's momont's and they're the other English players to do so.
04That's good. Also, first time he's back at number three in a T20 and seems to quite like it. But I guess you have to be flexible, don't you? Yeah. Can I just make another World Cup just observation? I can't think this, I might look stupid after I say this, but I can't think of anything more obvious of the same cricket I've watched since I was a kid for South Africa to be winning games like they are. And I know for a fact, they will be beaten in the semifinals now. because they look so good. Do you know what I mean? I will be shocked. They look like by far the best team in this tournament and I'll be shocked if they win it.
39What do you think the worst South African semifinal defeat was? Because I think I've got one, but I want to see if it's the same as yours. Well, I know that what you're going to be thinking is Yal and Donald. 1999 World Cup, yeah. 1999 World Cup with Elworthy. Did that sort of start the whole thing off, didn't it? That's the origin story, really. It is the origin story, but there is another one in 2015, I think, against Brendan McCollum's New Zealand. I think that goes down to the last ball and they lose that game as well. I remember that being equally as heartbreaking. Adele Steynans up in tears, I think, on the boundary when that goes down.
15But yeah, it has to be 99. Yeah, Lance Klusner, I think it was, wasn't it? Klusner, because he needs like one or three or something, doesn't he? You need one run off for three balls left. Yeah, it was horrible. Just a mess, wasn't it? And they bottle it. it makes me feel sick thinking back to it while we're doing nostalgia go shall we pick up on something we mentioned at the end of the last podcast which was last thursday morning i woke up to hundreds of messages on the whatsapp group mainly between jimmy and felix um fee can you remind people what was going on and what caused so many messages and what has now caused so much chat amongst the tail enders i'm pleased to say yeah thank you for asking me greg so um last week as we all do when we need an emotional crutch um like chapman does when he says as well as well i was um i was uh needed something to watch i can't be bothered to watch any more tv shows i thought you know what's going to make me feel really good the only thing in the world that can make me feel really good and cuddly and soft is the 2005 ashes so i watched that you can still find the box set on YouTube.
21I highly recommend it. And I've got on a tell in this group, just observations saying how beautiful I've forgotten Matthew Hoggard's action was. And fortunately for me, even though you were asleep, Greg, Jimmy was alert and up for the conversation. I love it when Jimmy's up for the conversation and wants to talk cricket. And we spiraled into what is the England team of this century of which I named mine. I'll quickly run that back for you, but it was Cook, Triscoffic, Stuart Wicket keeping it free. Root Peterson. I've got these the wrong way around on our socials clip. It would be Stokes at six.
55Flintoff at seven. Swan. Simon Jones. Darren Goff. And our Jimmy. Eleven. Now, just a quick check. Goff at nine or Jones at nine? Because you've switched them around again. Do you know what? I can't remember. Jimmy would Goff at nine. You would, wouldn't he? Goff at nine. Jones at ten. Jimmy at eleven. We don't bat deep. We don't bat deep. But it still is a team of a century. But, you know, Swan at eight's pretty deep and Goff was handy. Yes. I'd say he could get you a good 30, 40. The main understandable criticism I've seen of this team is there is no Stuart Broad in it. And I do understand that.
32And I just watched the 2005 Ashes. So I think I was just thinking when you watch Simon Jones bowling that series, swinging the ball both ways at 90 plus, it's very hard for your heart to say he shouldn't be in an all time England team. Yeah. But that might be an omission. you're you're sort of well you're projecting what you imagined his career would have been if he hadn't have got horribly injured correct thinking as you saw him as you saw him as he bowed out if he'd continued at that level and got better and better as he might have well have done yeah you would have put him above you have put him above broad thank you and to double up my thinking there on that and whatsapp chat jimmy did say to me he might have been the one bowlers and the next Jimmy you you would watch him and think he can do absolutely everything yeah I remember in practice I'd watch him and be like I want all of those attributes that he's got you know he was so athletic he could bowl 90 miles an hour off you know six paces he was just that springy and fast twitch and he had skills could swing the ball reverse swing the ball strong fast just everything As a 21-year-old, when I came into the group, I was like, I want those attributes.
49I wish I could be more like him sort of thing. So, yeah, I think I'm agreeing with you. I think he would have or could have, without that knee injury in Brisbane, could have gone on to have a really amazing career. But then if he did do that, we then got on to would myself and Stuart Broad have had the careers we had if he went on to have an amazing career. So it's just a strange thing to think about. it it is isn't it in that in terms of that yeah sliding doors environment definitely because he wouldn't have bowled in the tandem as much anywhere near as much you and stuart because you've been trying to fit simon definitely into all those teams hmm interesting well certainly for a few years yeah yeah who's your team greg have you given it any thoughts well i have given it a lot of thought but i wanted just to mention a few listener thoughts as well because there was so much chat on the on the social post that we're and yeah a few a few a couple of tweaks but largely i love that team love that team there's there's there's a lot to love about that team and i am such a such an alex stewart fan boy from day one obviously yeah i would say he's the one that you could rotate in and out i think you could also rotate in and out triscothic maybe but i wouldn't want to but i think that's what a lot of people are chatting about who'd you pick strauss well okay let's go to the number three position a lot of calls for michael vaughan to be at number three bit spicy that which i which i understand a lot of people saying that the one that i liked if you were to maybe find a space for matt prior which i might do you'd put vaughan at three and then drop flint off maybe but then you got I don't know and then it's tricky okay so here's here with the here's the chat from the listeners Vaughn at three prior as keeper so much of Stuart Broad at 10 that was the most popular comment by far yeah I think Stuart yeah that seems like the person you want to try and get into that side somehow maybe maybe put him in for golf maybe or Jones yeah maybe or Jones the whole thing's tough the whole thing's tough it's tough at this level what i will say on goff and stewart yeah they didn't play a lot of cricket they didn't play huge amount of cricket this century i know yeah big 90s so that that and again an interesting point about alex stewart actually you put him in as your keeper and i'm not against having him in the team because i loved him i think he was an amazing batter so his career spanned the 90s and the noughties was he the best keeper in both those decades, I'm not sure that he was.
30No, no. He's in for his batting. He's in for just... Yeah, of course. Yeah, absolutely. Joe, what I like about the pick though is that he's still, he's forever going to be in that situation where we're still trying to fit him in to balance the team, even in a team of a century. It's like, well, he gives us a secret bat for E. It's like that never, ever ends. Yeah. The other point I did make to Fee on that during that chat was, I personally think it's Flintoff or Stokes, not Bull. Yes. So that's what I was trying to, if I was making room for a Matt Breyer, it's one of those two that are going. And obviously he was deep in 2005 Ashes Clip.
06So he's like, it's going to have to be Flintoff. No, you can't, but you just can't have a team of century and not have Freddie in it. I'm sorry, you just can't. He's too sort of valuable to English cricket. It's two hairs on the back of a net. It's just too iconic, the things that he did. Well, he made, you know, I think I've said this before, but he got my auntie Pam interested. I remember this vividly. She spoke to me and was like, I remember it. She said, what about the cricket, eh? What about that Freddie? That was the moment. That was the moment that it went from the back page to the front page.
38Crossover. Mr. Incredible. And then back to the back page again. Yeah, back to the back page for the next 20 years. And then she sacked it off. And now sometimes, not even on the back page. Greg, there's been a wicket. Yes, Felix White. What's happening, Colombo? As well. England have just dropped a wicket, Greg. It's going to be a thrilling chase. There's 43 needed from 18. Two new batters at the crease. It's Rhian Arbin and Will Jax. Jax is in form, as we know. He's eight from nine. Glenn Phillips is having a good tournament. He's bowling to them now. Back to you in the studio. Could be tricky, that, actually.
13Hmm. All right. Well, keep us updated, Felix. Thank you. As we go back to our team of the century. Oh yeah. On five live-ish afternoon. I've got, I've got a good one as well, but I think we could do, because lots of people said their picks. We should do an emotional team of a century. So not the best team, but just your favorites. that's what this is. That's what this is. No, but I think this is the best team because in my emotional team, I would pick Ashley Giles and Monty Panesar and Ravi Bapara. And Ian Bell. I wouldn't necessarily, I wouldn't pick Ian Bell. Okay. But all right, well, let's, we could, we could do an emotional 11 but we could also do a vibes based 11 very much a brendan mccullum sort of a vibes pick 11 of the century would be would be really good matching what's what's your take on felix's team of the century and this discussion well because after we said we had you on from the first bit of the episode you haven't said anything i wasn't i was interested in by because i checked after i looked at felix's team and it's exactly the same one that uh chat GBT spat out oh really and I thought is that exactly the same one are you accusing accusing him of cheating no no I'm just saying Alex Stewart at three it was yeah was it Simon Jones actually let me go back no they would have picked Broad definitely they had so it wasn't the exact same team it was almost right almost isn't exactly oh no they had Jonathan Trotter three Jonathan Trotter three yeah I think that is a good shout I think that's a fair shout Trotter three there was a there was a lot of a lot of calls for Trot to be at three, Ian Bell to be in the team.
51The Strauss for Tresk Gothic thing, you're never going to convince me of that because that is my emotional, my vibes and my stats picking Tresk Gothic. Are you an Ian Bell fan, Greg? Yes. Well, I'm an Ian Bell fan as in I like him as a man and I really loved watching him bat. Does he make it into my team of the century? No, just because I don't think he saved enough games or won enough games. Famously, handsome Chris's favourite ever batter, Ian Bell. He talks a lot about Ian Bell. And he gets accused sometimes of only being able to score big runs when he's in a good partnership. He can't do it by himself.

33Do you know what? When me and Jimmy toured last year, we did do a section where it was Jimmy's Vibes 11 or The Night Out 11. Jim maybe you should give the tail enders audience the benefit of this 11 and why you picked him do you think yeah I think so I think this would be good yeah I didn't we didn't know how this was going to go I don't really know why we did this just filling some time I guess a cold Tuesday in Richmond yeah my night out slash vibes 11 was Alistair Cook yeah why's that helping the batting getting the first round one of my best mates from cricket just love him to bits loves a pint down the pub but he does slide off to bed around half 11 but but up until then really good Joe Root obviously the chicken shop thing you know my last game we were in a chicken shop at five in the morning all the lads went to a nightclub we're in the hotel bar I said to Root you're gonna join the lads in the club he's like no I'm going where you're going tonight and then we ended up watching the sun come up with chicken wings so romantic Johnny Bairstow number three best host I've ever played with loves having people around his house.
36There's a great barbecue. Really good fun. Moeen at number four. Love it. I think the funniest person I've played cricket with. I think. You know, he's just a really good laugh. So love Mo. Stokes, good fun. I've got Stokes and Fred in good all-rounders and, yeah, good laugh. Swan at eight or seven. One of my best mates again. Really good fun. Brodie's in there because he'll get the bill at the end of the night Liam Plunkett I got on really well with certainly at the start of my career we spent a lot of time together on tour he was good fun, Stephen Finn similar very good fun and Mark Wood is in there he doesn't drink would he but he is as most people will know he's high energy he's a lot of fun, he loves dancing as well so he'll stay out, drink water all night just waiting for lads to go and dance for and then he'll be straight on there with some moves.
34Doesn't even need a beer. Yes, that's a great Vibes XI. I think it's a really good Vibes XI. Matching, would you make any changes to that Vibes XI? Who would you put in? Because you've hung out with the great and the good of English cricket now. So, who are you putting in there? I mean, you play paddle with Heather Knight. Is she in your all-time XI? Heather Knight would definitely make it in there. Uncle Satch? Well, I've only hung out with him once. So, he seems a bit rude at the moment because he doesn't respond to any of my communication so I'm just actually not making the cut who who else would have been trying to think now of all my cricketing friends Ben Foulkes he seems nice John from John from Idols yeah John definitely can you come to me in Colombo quickly Felix White there's something something happened in Colombo Felix is there watching it for us as well.
33There's, it's an absolute barnstormer, Greg. 12 required from eight now. Rayan Ahmed is taking on. Mitchell Santner is bowling wide outside of stump. England look like they're going to do it again. They're 148 for six with eight balls left requiring 160 to win. Back to you in the studio. I just thought about it. Kate Cross and Alex Hartley. Oh yeah. Great vibes. I did the No Balls podcast the other day. Rayan Ahmed had just come down the track to Mitchell Santner, veteran versus student and smashed him. over the top of cover for six. England now require five from the last over. Five from six, Rian Ahmed and Will Jacks on fire.
08One five, five for six. Lovely. A couple of bits from the listeners. Dan said, what about Gary Pratt? Maybe he's your 12th man. Yeah, a lot of shouts to Gary Pratt. That makes a lot of sense. 12th man of the century.
2312th man of the century. Wokes is the all-rounder, a few people were saying. Yeah, Jimmy actually said that as well, but Chris Wokes could have been in the team. Yeah. Which is true. I think my 11, I'll round it through quickly. Go on. Cook, Triscothic, Vaughan, Root, Peterson, Stokes. You're going to be surprised here and it popped into my head when Jimmy mentioned it. I'm putting Bairstow as my keeper and I'm sorry. Actually, I'm not even sorry. I'm just going to own it. No, it's a lovely shout. Swan, Broad, Harmson, Anderson. Nice. I actually, I like that one. That's a very good team. It's a great, that's an amazing team.
54You've got Harmy in there as well. I think you've got, because what's great about that side is you've got obviously Stone Cold Legends, all of them. Yeah. But you've also got - Balance. You've got great characters. You've got amazing characters in there. You've got Harmson at one end. You've got Broad at the other. You've got Theatrix. You've got Swan, who's funny. He's also very charismatic. You've got Bairstow, who's a live wire. You've got Stokes. You don't know what he's going to do. Peterson, absolutely nuts. Is Flintoff in the team as well? Flintoff's not in the team. Oh, Greg, who would you have as your coach in that team?
22That is a great - Duncan Fletcher. Greg, do you know what? I can only say it. I prefer your team as you read that out. Yeah, I think I do as well. With Bairstow at seven, that sounds like a better team. Vaughn at three, Bairstow at seven. And Harmison in there as well. But the problem we got there is that I'm making Bairstow bat somewhere he doesn't want to bat, I don't think. I think you'll bat there in a team of a century, thank you very much, if you ask him. And to answer your question, Matching, to make him bat there, I shall be the coach. And they'll do as I say. who is your captain my captain's Michael Vaughan yeah yeah and I think my coach actually weirdly I probably would go for Andy Flower in his heyday I love that shout is he not in his heyday now well what day is he in he's a very successful T20 coach yeah but I don't want that for my test team yeah he was a very successful test coach yeah I know I want him in that that perfect moment before all the wheels fell off on him just as they were getting to the very, very best.
28That's what I want. Anyway, that's what I want. Is that too much to ask? To have all those players to come back and play again? Not at all. It's a better team than mine. Three needed from four balls in Colombo. Rihanna just run on track and smash down mid wicket. It's been cut off for one. Three required from four. Can I just take this opportunity to ask the Tailenders listeners to not only send in their dream 11s of the century, but also their dream topics for the 11s. your you know your vibes picks your your 12th man 11 you know whatever it might be yeah that's what your left-handed 11 yeah whatever ideas please to tailenders at bbc.co.uk aesthetically pleasing 11 you know i i just i thought of one what about the best cricketers because this is a bit it feels tailendersy this feels a bit in our uh in our sort of onion um best best players never to play a test match for england 11 love that i absolutely love it yeah glenn chapel is his first name on the team sheet and um just in colombo guys england have won by four wickets they beat in new zealand they've done exactly what they've done all tournament where they haven't looked that convincing but they've won the game yet again reinforcing this England men's cricket setup is the most annoying cricket setup of all time.
55They might win this tournament, you know. Yeah. Yeah, Jimmy, go on. What were you saying? Who's in yours? Give us a couple of names to get us going. I've not. It's just the title, mate. I've got to look through. Glen Chappell, definitely. But I just thought about it because we talk a lot about county cricket here. obviously Wayne Madsen's a big friend of the show. Best friend. We talk about going to watch county cricket. I know something that you guys love. So there must be county players out there. North East, Sam North East, isn't it? Yeah, preferably from an age where we all remember. Don't go looking back at stats and going, oh, Jeff Short from 1947.
41He's good though. Although he was amazing. amazing player shorty was but yeah I I think that that could be fun I've not I've really not thought that through no it's great there'd be loads of gloss players there could we never get picked for test teams because the regime don't like it not from London like go on name something come on let's give me a gloss let's hit real them up Darren Lehman Darren Lehman Darren Lehman the famous Bristol he didn't play for England you're right he didn't play for England never played a test for England What a disgrace. But what he's done there is very matching and very clever.
17He said the best players to have never played a test for England. So he's just going to pick players from different international tests. Courtney Walsh. Yeah, he never played for England. Yeah, it's a gut in that Shane Warne never played for England. That is a real shame. Great. Okay, well, let's do that next week as well. And matching, you've got a quiz for us. What have you got for us this week, please? Oh, I've got, it's quite a self-indulgent quiz this week, but I think you're going to like it. Sorry about you. Right. Yeah, let's make this podcast more in. So this is a brand new original quiz.
55During the T20 World Cup, we're finding out about which cricket team has global impact. And here is a quiz that explores the international impact of this podcast around the world. Right. I've done some digging and a huge thank you to Will Cooper from the BBC, who's found the actual download data of tailenders from various countries around the world. Okay. So we're going to play a game of higher or lower and you have to find out which countries have more downloads of tailenders in various countries. Welcome to... Oh my God. Welcome to Around the World in 80 Plays. Yeah, nice. you've had such a busy time with quizzes haven't you i can feel that you're running out because you've had such a good run come on around the water make you play one of my day plays is really good that is good it is good aka let's get ready to gaze into our navels right do you want to hear the theme tune yes i would love to hear i've been working with uh my musical collaborator max from a deco band do you want to hear yeah i sent him these lyrics this is what he came back with go on Max hello I can't understand are you a quick change man do you listen in the car in the big deal in the USA are we the latest praise welcome to around the world in 80 place
23this guy's a genius brilliant I can just send him lyrics and he just comes up with that does that work How old were you, Fee? For the Maccabees, you can just, if I just send you lyrics, you can create like a... Absolutely not, no. I think Max has got a, Max has definitely got a skill for it. So, yeah, do go and listen to, I know we can't promote stuff on BBC, but do go and listen to Deco Band, because he does that out of the kindness of his heart. Other bands are available, like Rolling Stones. Can't think of it, no. Spandau Ballet. Oh, yeah. The Cortinas. There's probably some Gloucester bands that don't get any recognition.
57Idols. yeah get down services yes get down services okay so here we are brand new kids around the world they get 80 plays simple game of higher or lower i'm going to give you a country you have to say if tail enders got more himself away there isn't he that's what yeah god more or less downloads do play along at home we're going to start off with bangladesh right we had 4234 downloads in bangladesh last year greg do you think kenya had more or less tail enders downloads than Bangladesh, Kenya, cradle of civilization, the oldest human fossils in history were found in Kenya, which informed our understanding of evolution, but do they like the musings of Jimmy Anderson?
42So good. Well, it's interesting. Have we featured any Kenyan cricket? No, I don't think we've chatted much about that. We've probably talked more about Bangladesh. I would go I would go, you're saying less. I would say fewer, personally. But I would also say fewer. Okay. Incorrect. Kenya, we have 10 ,271. Wow. So we're in Kenya. Jimmy, welcome to Around the World in 80, please. Thank you for having me on Around the World in 80, please. Good to know that the Tikalos in Kenya are listening. Steve and the family. Make sure we're going to Namibia. does namibia namibia have more or let fewer tail enders downloads than kenya namibia the largest population of wild cheetahs on the planet around one third of the global population of cheetahs live there but do they listen to go wells on double speed jimmy uh higher or lower than 10 000 yeah i know i can't see god i think cricket is potentially slightly more popular in namibia close to south africa but is it that big to to get more than 10 000 downloads i'm gonna go i'm gonna go higher or more or more i'm sure that's incorrect we only had 702 downloads in namibia oh we need to do some work on the brand there yeah work to be done felix welcome to around the world in 80 plays and you're having me in round about 80 plays we're in namibia with 702 downloads 702 yeah okay do you think hong kong has a higher or higher or lower downloads than namibia i think hong kong has because i think of a i think there'll be quite a lot of expats maybe in hong kong so i'm gonna go higher slash mora um than wherever we were namibia correct 51 298 that's big that's big that's big out in hong kong yeah yeah yeah yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah.
48We've shouted out the Hong Kong cricket club system. I think we have, yeah. There is a Hong Kong sort of, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Big shout out to the Hong Kong crew. A lot of sort of, I'd say a lot of cross-section of cricket finance lads out there. You know, you can take your gilet to Hong Kong and you fit in there as well. We've shouted out the whole Hong Kong infrastructure. Absolutely. You can walk around in a Gantt gilet with brown shoes and jeans and you would fit in in hong kong just like you fit in in your local jp morgan in london okay we're in hong kong next greg we're going to barbados thank god for the birthplace of rum and rihanna do they like hearing vasectomy shout outs in Barbados.

39Higher or lower than 51 ,268? Yeah, I mean, per capita, I would say that we're more popular there, but we don't have as many listeners there because there's not as many people. So I'd say it's fewer. Yeah, I'd agree with that. Correct, five runs. We had 6 ,303 there last year. So not great for us to work on the brand there. No, what's the population in Barbados? Yeah, it's only 200 ,000. Okay. That's not bad. Decent. What's the population of Hong Kong? Population of Hong Kong, 7.5 million. If anything, we're sh**ing Hong Kong. We're sh**ing Hong Kong. We're really popular in Barbados. That's what that means, maths-wise.
25Jimmy, we're going to Papua New Guinea, the South Pacific, known for its culture and biological diversity. Are we more or less popular in Papua New Guinea? the only country in the world where rugby league is the official national sport my god oh lower correct only 229 downloads in papua new guinea but again again how many people yeah it's got to be more than this should be this should be adjusted to take into consideration the population numbers is what we're saying oh actually papua new guinea's got uh 10 million people there so actually even more that's actually isn't it yeah it's really but really bad this is actually depressing me this game do you think i think it's amazing any downloads in papua new guinea i'd rather have none we're quite we're quite a uk centric cricket podcast yeah but cricket is the globe is the global game um just to say sharky from beyond the grave has just got into my ear here and he has said that the hong kong cricket club are keen for us to go out there which i might have ruined that by gently ribbing them about their finance clothes but um okay you know if anyone can take banter it's those finance lads um finally we are going from papua new guinea to the felix is for you the u.s virgin islands okay um do you want to know some interesting facts about the u.s virgin islands i would love to yeah go on it's actually even though it's in the caribbean it's actually a u.s territory okay fun fact hence the title obviously he's known for his beautiful beaches but Fraser actor Kelsey Grammer was born there.
08Sideshow Bob most importantly. Do you want to know even more funner facts? Kelsey Grammer recently well not recently but has fallen in love with a married and air stewardess called Katie who's from Bristol so he's recently bought a house in Bristol. Do you want to know an even funner fact? I would love to know more facts yep. His wife Katie is the daughter of 80s Bristol City legend Alan Walsh who's one of the club's record goal scorers and is widely regarded as the first player to execute the step over. Isn't that mental anyway? Wow. It is. I hear the blues are calling to sound. Who'd have thought you'd have done a whole quiz just to drop Kelsey Grandin into it?
46The whole thing has just been for that little year. It's all been leading to this. That's all you wanted to do. The whole quiz is pointless. I don't know what to do. Got someone else to do the theme tune because all you wanted to do was read out these facts. How? How many downloads have we had in the US Virgin Islands? We have more or less than 229. Oh, we'll probably have more than that, but I think not that much more. Unfortunately, we've got a lot of work to do. This is the only place in the world we have zero downloads. What? In the US. Craig's going to be. It's a shame though, because here's a fun fact for you.
22Kelsey Grammer loves tail enders, massive tail ender. Yeah. But he's actually moved from the US Virgin Islands. To Bristol. To Bristol. so his downloads count in the uk so that's where we're missing out he might he might also actually tell you what you could do if you if you are dedicated to the tailenders cause you could download your next episode of tailenders but using a vpn from the u.s virgin islands and therefore that will count as a download from an ip address from there so let's do that shall we jimmy's got his phone out i'm gonna do it now yeah let's get our views up in the u.s virgin islands guys i thought i was uh interesting to know where you know what here's here's the journey i went on with that quiz loved the theme tune hated the first two ones got bored texted felix saying i hate this game then which i've never done because i'm a huge you know i'm such a big supporter of yours matching and then and then i got interested in it and so you kept you kept me You kept me hooked.
27Did you take feelings to say, actually, I'm interested in this now? Can you do that? Actually, I'm interested in this now. There you go. Okay, well, you know, I'll just play the theme tune again. Here we go. Yes.
56Thank you for playing Around the World on 80 Plays. Thank you so much for having us on Around the World on 80 Plays. An email. Dear Tailenders, Luke here. Go on, cheers. Long time listener, first time contactor. Cheers, cheers, cheers, cheers, cheers. Thanks for all the entertainment provided on my runs. One of the only podcasts that has me laughing out loud in public. Now, I could have not read that bit out, but I didn't want to do that. You will try running around the f***ing US Virgin Islands for a change then and listening to it. or at least pretending to with your chosen VPN provider. Get your VPN on.
30For the lads. Down to business, says Luke. After listening to the latest show, not impressed with Matching's latest quiz, more effort, please. I'm sorry. I could have left that bit out as well, but I didn't. My ears pricked up when G-Force mentioned wanting to come to Japan to do cricket. Asia Games! In September this year, the games are coming to Japan. Not just that, it's in Eiche, the place I live in. Cricket is making a long-awaited return to the games. And wait, there's more. The brand new cricket ground for the matches is being built in the campus of the university where I work five minutes from my house.
11In other words, get yourselves out of here. There's space to stay as well. See in September. It's called Luke Blower. There you go. Thank you, Luke. That's great news. Cricket in Japan, as we wanted. Yeah. Yeah. I'd love to go out there. There's your documentary, BBC. Yeah. We could do a travel doc. We might have to do it. Who gets them commissioned? You either have to go with Rylan or Amanda Holden, but I think we could add one of those two and I think we could probably do it. Or your dad. They like doing that, don't they? Send you out with a parent. They do, yeah. Or maybe we go, or do we go with Bradley Walsh's son?
47Bradley Walsh's, sorry, what's that? Did Bradley Walsh do a doc with his son? well Bradley Walsh's dad and Bradley Walsh's son host things together right so they do a travel show and they host Gladiators so I wonder maybe if we yeah so maybe you could pair us up with Martin Kemp or Jack Whitehall's dad Matt Machen's mum, that'd be fun she'd love that she'd go to the US Merger Islands yeah there's a version of this somewhere maybe Jimmy and your kids do Lola and Ruby want to come along seems like that's what they commissioned no no okay
33last year on day one of the county championship and thanks for your email by the way Luke we will be watching Asia games with interest last year on day one of the county championship we had a really nice day at Lord's We were hoping that Jimmy would be playing for Lanks. It was Middlesex-Lancashire and Jimmy was injured. And so he was the only one that wasn't there and about 300 tailenders turned up. And it was still nice. But imagine Jimmy's actually playing this year. Day one of the county championship is Friday the 3rd of April. Yeah. Potential venues, Middlesex-Gloucester, North Hans-Lanks, Derby-Worster.
13I think maybe North Hans might be quite good. yeah Jimmy's playing at Northampton could be fun I'll be up for that yeah never been there could be quite good you've never been to Northampton I have been to Northampton the road menders venue so that's something for us to have in our brains for the next few weeks and yeah any tailenders think any possibles what do you like do you like that do you not like that do we go to Lords do we move it around the country do we go and see Wayne Madison at Derby what are your thoughts tailenders at bbc.co.uk we'll keep thinking in the background as well should do the go-wells and then round off this wonderful podcast here we go with the birthdays human being birthdays human being ones we've got Wilf we've got Martin we've got Nicola who's holidaying in Cambodia as a birthday treat no doubt searching for Pon Benthion Dan and Matt and Liam and Simon also having birthdays go-well cheers cricket clubs human being cricket clubs human being ones long Sutton cricket club especially Rupert who has played for them for 50 years.
16This is a fun one. So Nepal under eight Bs, who are actually under 14s and 13s players for North Middlesex Cricket Club, have been massive Nepal fans since some of their team came to train at the club. So they've renamed themselves Nepal under eights. Don't know why it's under eights, but they've renamed themselves. That's quite good. That's cool. Imagine you're a team, like a North Middlesex team, and you get pros turning up. That's always exciting. So that's fun. big up to them go well cheers David is a long time listener and asks can we bring back some general cricketing sadness please yeah of course we can requests for features always welcome tailenders at bbc.co.uk if you want your cricketing sadness um therapised by Jimmy Anderson he will make everything okay as long as you but you must be honest and you must tell him exactly what happened and then he will he'll give you his blessing to say do you know what don't worry about it carry on go well and get well to Kamath Cricket Club, the Cow Corner Connoisseur Dodds, and also a go well, get well to Catherine, who has just started chemotherapy.
19Huge go wells and get wells to both of you. Cheers. Go well. Cheers.
26An email. Hi, guys. Huge hello from Hubli in India as I've made the extraordinary decision to come out here to watch the Ranji Trophy final between Karnataka and Jammu and Kashmir. The visitors are 289 for two off 85 overs on day one. This is proper cricket. Go well. That's great. Cheers. Cheers. Oh, could you imagine just grinding out 289 runs off 85 overs? Just having, that's actually not bad. That's not a bad run rate for a day, but that's. No, it isn't. That's some nice stuff. That is Paul, who is from Hubbly, usually maidenhead. Newtail Enders. Baby. You can be in babies, you can be in ones.
06We've got Haylia and we've got Fergus. Go out. Cheers. We've got Stephen who's walking 100 miles in four days for a laugh with his dog Phoenix for charity. You walk 500 more. Go out. Cheers. Walk well. Weddings. Human being weddings, human being ones, inaugural bilaterals. We've got Ryan and Ellie who are currently crossing Sri Lanka in a tuk-tuk. Go out. Cheers. And some googly news from Tom. Human being vasectomies, human being ones. Oh, not from Tom. Oh, yeah, it's just Tom, actually. Tom's getting the snip. And also Sam has emailed in with some googly news. He says, I've just had my final ultrasound after having had surgery for testicular torsion on both me knackers.
46One testicle spun a full 360 degrees for a laugh. I thought that was fitting for googly news. And it felt like the perfect time to write in for a shout out. Recovery has gone well and has been accompanied by trail finders the whole way through, meaning lots of catharsis listening to you talk about our ashes performances, which was probably, I'm adding this bit, even more painful. Go well to you, Sam. I hope they're twisting it all the way back around again. Yeah. Go well, snip well, rotate well. That's Sam, who is 30 from London, and he has been a listener since the BBBCS era, which is the before BBC Sounds era.
33Oh, yeah, I forgot about that. That is the end of today's Tailenders. Thank you very much for listening. If you'd like a go well, or you want to give us a GCS or any of your ideas for the Dream 11s, then tailenders at bbc.co.uk. And that gets you straight through to the Trail Finder's Help Desk, manned as ever by Mark Sharman Sharknado, the movie. Don't forget to listen on BBC Sounds. And if you haven't listened to this episode of BBC Sounds, you are working against us. The BBC Sport website has all the news, the clips and the commentaries from the Men's T20 World Cup. A huge go well. Thank you, Felix.
12Thank you, Matching. Thank you, Sharknado. Thank you, Jimmy. Go guys.
21A new era of Formula One is about to dawn. I think the biggest step the sport has ever seen. There are new rules, new cars and a brand new team. In Formula One, it's just absolute, brutal, pure competition. And the next generation of star drivers are taking us along for the ride too. I'm going to go like a madman. If you want to make it, first of all, you have to believe that you have what it takes. The biggest shake-up of F1's rulebook has been years in the making. Somebody's going to get it right and somebody's going to get it wrong. I'm Rosamund Pike and this is F1 Back at Base. A new era. Listen on BBC Sounds.
