0:00Hi, my name is Lewis Howes and welcome to the Daily Motivation Show.

0:10For me, there are three causes of doubt. Three main things that hold us back, that make us doubt ourselves. The first one is the fear of failure. How many of you, just show of hands, have you ever been afraid to fail at something in your life? I think all of us. failure the fear of failure for me is was never really a thing for me because as an athlete i learned early on that you needed to fail constantly in order to get better you know when i was shooting free throws early on and i miss my coach would tell me well you need to adjust your elbow you need to follow through you need to do this so failure was actually a mechanism for me to learn how to improve and how to get better and how to achieve my goals.

0:56The second cause of doubt is success, the pressure that comes with success. Well, once I achieve something, then I have this responsibility. Then I have to show up that way all the time. Then the people expect me to be a certain way. Or here's one. When I succeed, I leave my friends and family behind. mind, when you started to achieve something, your friends or your circle of influence said, hey, why don't you come back, hang out with us? Where are you going? Why are you trying to do that thing? Like, come chill out with us, you know, play in the land of mediocrity. But how many of you have ever felt like that has happened to you in your life where you just wanted to go after something, but then friends or teammates or peers or even family sometimes will be like, yeah, come back and hang out with us.

1:44You know what I mean? I'll tell you what, it's a lot of pressure to play bigger in your life and constantly try to go after what you want. But the failure and the success for me was never the main issue. It was never like the deal breaker for me. The thing for me, the main cause of doubt for me has always been, and it's something that I've gotten really good at overcoming, has been judgment. Judgment, the fear of being judged. what if I fail and people make fun of me? What if I fail and people laugh at me? What if I embarrass myself on stage? Well, what if I put myself all the way out there and then I'm just a failure and I'm vulnerable and everyone just makes fun of me?

2:29That's been my big fear that I've had to deal with when it comes to self-doubt as a child growing up and even today sometimes you know who am I to go on the Ellen show who am I to go to be a New York Times best-selling author who am I to do these things and what if it doesn't work out what if people make fun of me what if it doesn't meet my expectations that's been something I dealt with and it all boils down to this core point that I am not enough the three causes of doubt the fear of failure, the fear of success, and the fear of judgment, being judged as a human being. We don't want to feel judged.

3:14The center of that, all three of those, if you have all three fears, then you're going to feel like a worthless piece of crap. You're going to feel worthless. You're going to feel insignificant all the time. You're going to say, I'm not enough. I am not enough. I'm never enough. I'm never going to be good enough. I remember growing up saying that to myself a lot. I'm not enough. I'm not enough. I'm not good enough. I'm not smart enough. I'm not attractive enough. Whatever it may be, I would say that. I'm not enough is really the killer of dreams. There's so much doubt and insecurity and unworthiness that a lot of us have faced throughout our lives.

3:55Some of us have faced it earlier. Some of us might be facing it now. Maybe some of you have gone through a divorce recently after 10, 20 years, and you're asking yourself, what happens? What am I going to do next? Maybe some of you have lost a job recently saying, what happened? Maybe you launched a business that failed, and you say, what happened? Am I good enough? Maybe I shouldn't have done that. Maybe I should have listened to those people that told me I wasn't going to be able to make it happen. Maybe I should have not tried this. Maybe I should have done what my parents told me to do, which is go and get this degree and go and work here.

4:28and keep it safe for myself. Whatever it is that you're going through, that self-doubt, we must go all in on the fear until it disappears. When we are in fear, we're afraid of what people think about us. We eliminate fear when we focus out, and we focus on how can I serve other people.
