In short
How to build a $10K/month business with zero startup cash, using a “barbell” of scalable models: physical, hard-to-automate services on one end and AI-heavy online businesses on the other.
Guests
Chris Koerner (host/guest speaker) discusses reselling and service niches; Lewis Howes is the Daily Motivation Show host.
Key claims
Reselling and refurbishing can generate six figures by buying undervalued items locally (e.g., Facebook Marketplace) and selling on eBay; content creation helps grow an audience that later reduces reliance on constant sourcing.
Notable examples
VCRs bought for $5–$10 and sold for $100–$150; camcorders and other electronics; flipping free/cheap couches; window-washing service where a deposit could fund equipment.

Hi, my name is Lewis Howes and welcome to the Daily Motivation Show.
0:42Which types of businesses are the easiest to scale to 10K a month right now? I like to think of it like a barbell when it comes to businesses. On one side of the barbell, you have no AI, no tech, no internet, sweaty, hands-on, difficult. I love those businesses because people don't want to play their manual labor. Yes. Plumbing, the lawn mowing, the tree removal, the dirty work, right? Yes. Which you can charge a premium for, I feel like right now. Oh, yeah. Yeah. AI isn't about to disrupt that. No. On the other end of that barbell, you have AI heavy, right? All online content, AI heavy. That's where I like to be.
1:22I don't want to be in the messy middle where either side of that can be disrupted by the other side. so i really like reselling right now reselling anything i don't know when that's going to go out of business i talked to guys just yesterday that are reselling vcrs they're paying five to ten dollars for vcrs and selling for 100 to 150 they might be getting for free some of these probably right it's like some of these things you just like find donations yeah and then fix it up right these guys are in like the middle of nowhere virginia and so when we were talking i pulled up facebook marketplace and i live in dallas fort worth there's nine million people and i typed in vcr and i just watched their eyes lit up because there were hundreds of vcrs for five to ten bucks and they were like that one's worth 200 that one's worth 75 that one's worth 150 and i crunched the numbers and i'm like you can make six figures a year if you lived in dallas fort worth buying vcrs on facebook marketplace where people don't know the value and selling them on ebay where there's a fair price, a fair market value for it.
2:21Wow. VCRs, right? Yeah. And you could rinse and repeat that category with hundreds of others. These guys were selling camcorders, all types of stuff. So that is a business where if you're - Reselling. Reselling, anything. It could be clothes, it could be games, it could be toys, it could be whatever. I know a guy that makes six figures picking up free or close to free couches on Facebook Marketplace and selling them on Facebook Marketplace. Like people that only buy on Facebook marketplace and then sell on the same platform to the same people for a profit. Yeah. I think I've seen a lot of people on Instagram.
2:55I love people documenting their journeys of like reselling and picking up whatever$50 furniture and selling it for a thousand. Yeah. Now maybe they put a couple of days of like labor and paint and sanding it. But if you have that skill to refurbish something and then resell and make it look nice. Yeah. That's like$800 right there in profit. it was just a couple days of work but if you're willing to hit record on the camera put your phone on a tripod and you like you're not embarrassed then you can grow an audience who's cheering for you and rooting for you and then eventually you're gonna have an audience that won't necessitate you to go buy dressers anymore you can do whatever you want with that exactly it's almost like if you can create content showing the launch of an idea yes is more valuable than the idea itself and that's okay that's okay because people are good they want to support people they want to support the underdog and if you're the underdog and they're watching your come up from zero to something they're going to support you yeah okay so reselling is one what other couple of ideas you got i mean i had a couple come to my house just last week um they wash windows that's it i paid them 500 bucks and it was a husband wife they're like early mid 20s and they washed my windows and like this isn't how it worked but this is how it could have worked they could have said, Chris, can we wash your windows?
4:16And I'm like, sure. I want to support young entrepreneurs. So, okay, we need to require a deposit. No problem. How much? Half. Here's 250. Okay. They could have had$0 to their name. No car, no LLC, no insurance, anything. They could have Ubered to Home Depot, use that 250 to buy all the equipment for 50 bucks, come back to my house, spent five hours. We're like, it's hard work. I'm not saying it's easy and put hundreds of of profit in there. They could have been paid to start a business, right? That's a business where you would need money to start. You get paid up front. It's not unreasonable to ask for a deposit.
4:50That didn't happen. I just paid him, but I'm saying like back to our, you don't need money to start a business. That's one. So any, any service business that you start with your hands, that's unsexy, that's physical. We're missing like 3 million plumbers, HVAC and electricians in America right now. We have a shortage of like 3 million. And those are just the big three that home services that everyone talks about, but there's thousands of home service niches. If you look at just gutters, you have gutter repair, gutter replacement, gutter cleaning, like there's thousands of home service businesses.
5:21So anything you do with your hands that, you know, robots aren't about to take over because the smart people developing robots are making robots that can, you know, package orders and do things at scale, not replace a toilet.

A husband and wife showed up at Chris Koerner's house to wash his windows. No LLC. No insurance. No money. He paid them anyway.
That story is the whole lesson. You don't need capital to start a business. You need hustle and the nerve to ask for a deposit.
Koerner breaks down his barbell strategy. Stay far from tech on one side, no AI, no internet, just sweat. Or go all in on AI on the other. Skip the messy middle where either side can wipe you out.
He's watched guys buy VCRs for five bucks on Facebook Marketplace and flip them for a $150 on eBay. Same trick works with couches, clothes, furniture, anything people don't know the value of.
America is short three million plumbers, electricians, and HVAC techs. Robots aren't coming for that job anytime soon.
If you've been waiting for permission to start something with your hands, this is it.
