In short

Michael Beckwith discusses how fear underlies racism and division, arguing that prejudice is learned and maintained by people who treat others as “the other,” and that spiritual maturity can dissolve religious and racial boundaries.

Guest background

Michael Beckwith is a spiritual teacher and author associated with the spiritual movement Unity/Agape-style teachings (as referenced by his “infinite” and “transcendent” framing).

Key claims

Racism/homophobia aren’t innate; they’re taught. Fear-based people promote stereotypes and shrink their worldview. “There’s no other—only variations on a theme.” Religion can unite at its highest practice but separate at its lowest (fundamentalism). Mysticism transcends labels like “Christian/Buddhist mystic.”

Notable examples

“Mexicans/Arabs/black people” as fear-promoted categories; “Christian mystic” and “Islamic mystic” as invalid labels once transcendent; “two plus two is four” vs fundamental belief.

Hi, my name is Lewis Howes, and welcome to The Daily Motivation Show.

0:38Where is the root of racism come from for us? And why is it so hard for us to get past seeing color? Yeah. Well, a lot of it, obviously, it's learned. I mean, you don't see a racist or homophobic baby. You know, so it's actually learned. Wow, okay. And there are people inadvertently or on purpose that teach that because they're living in the perception of they are the other. They're darker, they're lighter, whatever the other is. They're from that country. Different language. Different language, different culture, different religion, whatever the case may be. So people live in the context of other, and they haven't yet matured into realizing there really isn't any other.

1:28There's only variations on a theme. It's all music. You know what I mean? Some's jazz, some's classical, some's R &B, whatever the case may be. Just variations on the theme. So it's not other. It's just we're the same inside, but we get to express. Now, why is that? because the infinite is infinite. It doesn't repeat itself. It doesn't do do-overs and it doesn't make mistakes. So all of us are unique expressions of the infinite. It would be boring. We all look the same. We all look the same. You know what I mean? And we were all the same. I mean, can you, first of all, can you imagine going through eternity being exactly as you are right now without any growth?

2:12No. It's called hell. You know what I mean? So if you can imagine that if everyone was exactly like you or exactly like me, and we just stayed the same forever, that's called hell. So the presence, which is infinite, recreated itself after its own image and likeness according to its infinite nature. We have such a variety of beauty and love and joy, and that's what we want to celebrate. And people that are in fear are bigoted, racist. They're mainly living in fear. And then they promote that fear. You know, oh, the Mexicans, oh, the Arabs, oh, the black people, whatever. You know what I mean? They promote that fear and they end up living in a very small world.

2:58Yeah. Yeah. How much of a role does religion play in creating fear in each religious community of people that aren't in those communities? It depends on the maturity of the spiritual teacher. religion itself mean the word means to return to the source so religion itself is supposed to be a vehicle right that brings people back to the source back to love back to love back to connectedness however it is sometimes used as a sense of separation depending on the maturity of the spiritual teacher so it's supposed to bring you it's a boat or or yeah a boat or some kind of vehicle to bring you to an encounter with the transcendent.

3:43Once you have an encounter with the transcendent, you can celebrate the growth that brought you there, but you're not trying to hang on to it. So it's like, sometimes we'll say things like inadvertently, well, he was a Jewish mystic or he was a Christian mystic. Now, actually, when a person becomes a mystic, they kind of transcend the boat that got them there. There's no such thing as a Christian mystic. There's no such thing as a Buddhist mystic. There's no such thing as an Islamic mystic. Because once you become a mystic, that means you've transcended the boats and you realize we're all one.

4:16Right. You've transcended the religion. Religiosity. Yeah, yeah. And you can still honor. Of course. You honor it. The principles and the foundation. Yeah, you honor where you came from, but you're not trying to convert everybody to that anymore. So religion in its highest practice brings people together. In its lowest practice, it separates people. and you have people that become fundamental and they'll say things like, this is the path. If you don't walk this path, you're going to hell. That's a very limited perception. Now, how does a person get there? And there's fundamentalism in every religion.

4:51A fundamentalist simply believes that what they believe may or may not be true. So they have to convert you because they're afraid they might be wrong. You see, but once you know something, You don't convert. It's like, you know two plus two is four. Yeah. So if you go into a room and your teacher is teaching and everybody's talking, no, two plus two is five. No, two plus two is eight. You're going to back out of that room. You're not going to get into an argument because you know two plus two is four. You know the truth. You know the truth. So you just say, peace and blessings. You do your math and I'll do mine.

5:28But if you're fundamental, if you just believe two plus two is four, If you don't really know 2 plus 2 is 4, but you just believe it and you become a very high believer, 2 plus 2 is 4, I'm going to virtue, then you run into trouble there. Yeah. So our religions take us beyond belief, which we practice, into a deep knowing. And then you have tolerance and appreciation and compassion for people who are stumbling along their path.

Michael Beckwith says you've never met a racist baby. It's taught, every time, by people still living inside the idea of the other.

Beckwith's frame: the infinite doesn't repeat itself or do do-overs. Different skin, language, culture are variations on a theme. All of it's music.

Imagine staying exactly as you are, forever, no growth. He calls that hell.

Religion means return to the source. It's a boat meant to carry you to the transcendent. Once you arrive, you honor the boat instead of clinging to it.

Which is why there's no such thing as a Christian mystic or a Buddhist mystic. Cross over and the labels fall away.

The test he gives: a fundamentalist believes two plus two is four. He has to convert you because deep down he's scared he's wrong.

Someone who actually knows walks out of that argument. “Peace and blessings. You do your math, and I'll do mine.”
