11Imagine a scale that we each have called the self-love inner peace scale. A scale that you can measure on feeling self-love and inner peace. One being you have zero self-love and peace. Ten being you have an abundance overflowing. Where would you say you're currently at on that scale? I'm doing pretty good on the scale these days. I think I'm probably about an eight. I find these days it's so difficult to read the news, to think about the future, the future for our children, for our future generations. So much of everything is overwhelming, the divisions within our nation. Part of how I try to deal with it is to take it all seriously, for sure, and to do what you can to implement change, but also to have gratitude for where I am and the fact that I am healthy and that my loved ones are healthy.
15So to me, gratitude and self-love kind of overlap a little bit. Like I'm being good to myself if I'm able to be grateful. I think that that's important. you've had a, you know, 35 years of what seems to be on the outside, a beautiful, happy, successful, thriving relationship. Could you give me some advice on entering into a longer-term relationship with my girlfriend? Marriages, they're rough, man. Look at the statistics. Like, most of them don't work. People talk a lot about, I've heard this a billion times, you got to work at it. Marriage is something that you have to work at. And to me, it's less about work and more about play.
05You have to be with somebody that you want to play with. And you mentioned, you know, guitars. That's us just playing. We're just playing. We're playing with the goats, with old songs. She's playing the ukulele. I'm playing the guitar. We're playing with the harmonies. We don't always think of it as work. I just think it's important to remember that because work is work. You go out, you know, you're a movie star or you're a construction worker, dentist, whatever. You know, you're going out, you're working, you come home whenever you can, just play. With 35 years to try to homogenize it down to a quote like, she's my best friend or never go to bed angry or whatever, you know, whatever these things are.
55It's disrespectful to the 35 years. There's so much complexity. There's so many things that you're going to walk through this life together. To say, I always need to think about this one thing, I've never approached it in that way. It's like you wake up and you go, okay, it's a partnership. We're partners sometimes in business. We're partners in this marriage. We're partners in our parenting. what are we going to do today to get through the day, to deal with whatever issues we have to do, to get the shopping done, to clean up, to address whatever's going on with the kids or with our careers or with our management or with whatever else it happens to be.
44You know, how is that partnership going to function today?

Kevin Bacon believes that self-love and gratitude go hand-in-hand, rating himself an 8 out of 10 on the self-love scale despite the overwhelming state of the world. Drawing on his 35-year marriage, Bacon argues that relationships require playing together more than working at them, emphasizing the importance of partnership, complexity, and finding joy in everyday moments. Rather than relying on simplistic advice, he acknowledges the ups and downs of long-term commitment and advises approaching each new day in a spirit of collaboration. Overall, Bacon advocates facing relationship challenges with an attitude grounded in the present, eschewing idealism in favor of pragmatic optimism.
