In short

The episode argues that willpower fails because it’s “force” driven by the ego/survival system, which can only temporarily override habits; lasting change requires transforming identity and re-identifying with one’s deeper essence. It also frames life’s purpose as breaking free from constraints (insecurity, inadequacy, scarcity) to create “heaven on earth,” then extending that liberation to others.

Guest backgrounds

Peter Crone is the guest; he speaks from a coaching/athlete background (describing “forceful” vs “powerful” states) and a spiritual/identity-transformation framework. Host is Lewis Howes.

Key claims

Force creates tension and eventually collapse (e.g., lactic acid); willpower can’t violate identity; flow/power is peaceful and sustainable.

Notable examples

January fitness resolutions and gym cancellations by February; athletes describing “forceful” effort as tense/pushing hard versus “powerful” as at peace.

Hi, my name is Lewis Howes and welcome to the Daily Motivation Show.

0:41On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the most extreme, 1 being the least amount, how much suffering do you experience on a day-to-day? Day-to-day, I'd say less than 1. Yeah. Less than 1. So you have a little bit of suffering. Periodically. And the funny thing is, I just shot a documentary the other day and someone was talking about my work and how it brings freedom, love and possibility being the main pillars of my work, right? Which is really, without sounding too highfalutin, it's sort of awakening enlightenment, right? Where there's this experience of heaven on earth. And she said, you know, your work has touched me and I get stopped as I'm sure you do by so many people nowadays.

1:13And like you changed my life, you saved my life and it's really meaningful. And it's very humbling for me as a kid orphan from a small village in England. And she said, like, your work really has the potential to create this utopian experience for humanity. and she said what do you think that would be like for the world you know if we really lived in heaven and i've never had this answer before because i don't think i've had the question posed quite like that but i laughed and i said it almost sounds kind of boring there's no challenge because there's no solitude i'm like damn it i'm up the whole system i'm giving everyone complete freedom so no i i i kind of enjoy it to a certain degree now that of course it's not my sort of main event of my life.

1:55Whereas before, loss, fear, inadequacies, not enough, they were all present. And now it's become, I often say, you know, these bigger questions of life, what's the meaning of life, I think is a relatively easy question. It's like, whatever your brain is wired to make it mean, right? We all live in our own universe to some degree. I'm not saying that we don't share the same objective world, but we're always going to see through the lens of what we see. Like we don't look through our eyes, we look through our perspective. And so we see the cognitive bias of how we're wired. Then I say the purpose of life really is to break free from our constraints, right?

2:28It's the ultimate sort of cosmic Houdini. You know, we're trapped in our own straight jackets of our insecurities, inadequacies, and scarcities, and we get the opportunity to break through. That's such the accomplishment, like conquering our own hell to step into heaven. Or as I say, heaven is a place on earth. You just have to go through hell to get there. Then the purpose of life, or no, that was the purpose. The opportunity of life is then to help bring the same to others. So I feel like I'm very much in the season of my opportunity, which is kind of three stages. What was the first one? Is the meaning.

2:56The meaning is that we, we grapple with that, right? Like this is wrong or right beliefs, dogma, you know, the, the religious wars that have plagued and killed millions over, you know, asinine. Oh, I believe in this God. You believe in the other God. So we'll kill you. You know, it's like, and then the purpose is to break free from the constraints with which we arrive to create, to create freedom, essentially. Right. To discover our own true nature. Namaste. day, the divine in me recognizes the divine in you, awakening, enlightenment, whatever you call it, to realize that I am the kingdom of the Lord.

3:23The Buddha is who I am at my core. As I talk about this 2.0 world is what I'm bringing, right? The two-point essence of who you are as a soul, experiencing yourself through the lens of a human. So that's where I become misidentified with the human as suffering, re-identification with the essence of who I am is liberation. And then the opportunity is to extend that to others. And I feel that that's the season. out there that's kind of where we're both at right yeah as well totally and that's why there's so much simpatico both went through a lot of hell man a lot of suffering boy we enjoy having right so nice man dip my toe back in hell every day just talking relates to people okay but don't want to go there yeah i don't want to stay but uh but a lot of people will try to change their life through willpower it sounds like yeah like okay i'm gonna will myself to changing habits or changing like a positive mindset.

4:11But if you are stuck with a wiring or a subconscious mind or nervous system that is still stuck in a past trauma or past belief or past identity, why will willpower not work? Beautiful question. I hope I can sum it up quite quickly and succinctly for people. So willpower is an aspect of the ego based in survival. So I make a distinction. I love to sort of use language to help people unpack things. So willpower is based on the energy of force. Even if you look at it anatomically, force physiologically is eventually going to create lactic acid. It's not an efficient energy system, right? It's not sustainable.

4:50It's not renewable. It's not reusable. No, you're going to collapse, right? Which is what happens when we're coming from ego. You hit your head up against the wall. You go to work in a job you don't love. You're in a relationship. And then the second one is power. Like I always say, like with my athletes, which I know you've got a lot of background, and I'll ask them to say, I'm forceful. And I want them to feel that. How does that come across? If you are competing at whatever your chosen sport is and you're coming from a forceful place, describe that. They're like, I feel tense. I'm pushing hard.

5:17I'm not in flow. Da-da-da. I'm trying to make things happen. And then I said, you're powerful. And they're like, wow, I just feel so at peace, right? So they're the distinctions. But to answer the question directly, why it doesn't work is they say, you can use force to temporarily override habits, right? That's all that force is doing. Willpower. You're inspired by someone. You go to a coach. You talk to a therapist. You watch something on TV. Listen, hopefully, to many of your shows that are inspiring. You know what? This is my month. I'm going to get in shape. Even the beginning of the year, the misnomer, the January is the time that I should get in shape.

5:52I mean, it's all just made up. It's ridiculous. But most people cancel their membership in February. The stats speak for themselves. So you can use force to temporarily override habit. But you can never violate identity. And when people get that, like that's the self-fulfilling prophecy of your own programming.

Peter Crone rates his daily suffering less than 1 out of 10. He grew up an orphan in a small English village, buried in loss, fear, and not enough.

Asked what heaven on earth would actually feel like, he laughed and said “kinda boring.” No struggle, no conflict, no juice.

Willpower is ego wearing a gym membership. It’s force, and force always creates lactic acid, physically and emotionally. That’s why everyone quits by February.

Force feels like pushing. Power feels like peace. He asks his athletes to say “I’m forceful” then “I’m powerful” out loud and watch their whole body change.

His line that’ll stick with you: you can override a habit with force, but you can never violate identity.

Heaven is a place on earth, he says, you just have to go through hell to get there. He’s been to both, recently, on purpose.

The real work isn’t meaning-making, it’s breaking free from the straitjacket you were handed at birth, then handing that freedom to someone else.
