In short

Episode 1 “The Promise” of Dose of Determination argues that real determination starts small—by keeping one promise to yourself each day, not by waiting for a dramatic life change. It claims that every promise kept is “a vote” for the person you’re becoming, and that tomorrow will test you, so discipline matters more than motivation. It warns against self-shaming when you miss goals and emphasizes evolving daily.

Guests

None. The host speaks directly to listeners.

Key claims

Notable examples

0:00What's up, everybody? Welcome to the first ever episode of the Dose of Determination. So every single day, I'll be dropping a small episode, giving you guys the best doses of determination. But before we get started with day one called The Promise, I need you guys to go to thedeterminedsociety.com and sign up for our updates, guys. We got a lot of great things coming, a lot of great guests, and I want you guys to be able to get all the information at the right time. So without further ado, guys, we are going to start our first day, day one called the promise. And what I'm going to do, guys, is I'm going to read something to you and then I'm going to give a takeaway and ask you questions and give you some thoughts of how you can keep the promise to yourself today.

0:48So here we go. Without further ado, a man decided he was going to change his life, but nothing dramatic happened. No huge announcement, no perfect plan, no sudden burst of confidence. He simply made himself one promise. Today, I'm going to do what I said I would. That was it. One promise, one day. We tend to think determination begins with some massive life-changing decision. Most of the time, it starts much smaller. It starts when you stop negotiating with yourself. So here's the takeaway. Every promise you keep to yourself is a vote for the person you're trying to become. And then tomorrow will always become harder and the promise gets tested.

1:34Now, see what I want you guys to realize, we all have big, hairy, audacious, and badass goals, and we want to do things that are so much bigger than where we are right now. But in order to do that, we have to become the type of human being that can achieve those types of things. We need better discipline. We need determination. We don't need motivation. As we know, motivation is great. It's the pilot line to get you started, then it burns out really quickly. It's like the fickle mistress that's here one day and gone the next. Maybe a mistress is a wrong analogy. So for the people that know me very well, know I have a sick sense of humor sometimes.

2:15But listen, here's the thing. You will never feel like doing all the things every single day. You're going to wake up tired. You're going to wake up pissed off. You're going to wake up sick sometimes. But the most important thing is to keep the promise. So I want you guys to really dive in on what your promise is to yourself today. So when you're listening to this, I want you to think, what is the one thing that I've been telling myself I'm going to do and then I don't do it? What is that thing? Is it starting a business? Is it making one or two extra sales calls per day? Is it throwing the football with your son?

2:59Is it riding the scooter with your daughter? Is it holding your wife's hand? Is it making your husband's coffee? Or just telling each other that you appreciate them? And you make that promise in the morning, and then life gets in the fucking way, and you don't do it. Think of that one thing, guys. We all have them. I have mine too. I am not perfect. I am not coming to you guys, ever coming to you guys from the top of the mountain or on top of a soapbox. I'm not finished. I'm not even close. I'm an unfinished product. And the quicker that you guys realize that you are too and that every person in this world is unfinished, the better off you're going to be.

3:45Because every day we got to fight. We got to fight hard. We got to scratch and claw our way through every single moment because sometimes shit gets too heavy. It does. Fucking hard. So right now when you're listening and you're shaming yourself because you didn't get to the gym today. You didn't give a hug to your wife before she left the house or you didn't throw the fucking football yesterday with your son. It's okay. You're human. Can we just agree? Can we please agree to not shame ourselves in these moments? Because see, that's some weak-ass energy, guys. You're gonna shame yourself and all you're gonna do is bring more negativity to you.

4:29So what I want you to do today, yet again. What is your promise? Make the promise to yourself. It ain't about anybody else, guys. It ain't. It's about you. It's about what you want to create, who you want to become. What kind of human do you want to be? But most importantly, like I said at the very beginning of this segment was, who do you need to become? Because I'm going to tell you right now, the person you are right now is not going to achieve the things that you want to achieve. I hate to break it to you, man. It ain't going to happen. And the things that I want to achieve are not going to be accomplished by the person I am right now.

5:14We all evolve every single day, or we should be, because if we're not getting better, we're just regressing and we're dying. And we're all dying, to be clear. Every single day, we get closer to that moment. So why not make the most of it? Why not keep promises to yourself? No matter how tired, how pissed off, how unmotivated you are, still keep the promise. See, for me, guys, and if you've been listening to the show, you know what it was for me. It was my body. It was my nutrition. That was holding me back so much. And it was painful always seeing myself on camera, fat, bloated, inflamed, looking 10 years older than I actually am.

5:59The moment I fixed that, that's when everything changed for me in my life, for everything in the show. It elevated. I had more respect and not because of the way I look or the way I look. It's never about that, guys. It's about, do people see you as a person with discipline? And when people see you, As a person with discipline, oh boy, they buy into you really quickly because they know you are all about what you say. And they know if they needed you for anything at all, they know you're equipped because you do hard shit every day. And if you do hard shit every day, then you can help them through hard shit every single day.

6:47And that's what we should be doing for people. We should be elevating people. We should be helping one another. But just like the analogy, my wife always tells me, you're in an airplane and those masks come down, help yourself first, then women, children, elderly. Because if you don't put the oxygen mask on you first, then you can't help other people. So again, I want to reiterate right now to you, what's your promise? What's your promise to yourself right now? What are you going to do today? What are you going to do? And then do it, no matter how hard it is, no matter if you're kicking, screaming, or even crying because you're so emotionally freaking distraught that you're doing something so damn hard and you haven't pushed yourself in years.

7:41Please do it. Please. And then tomorrow will be tested. But don't worry. I will be back tomorrow with another dose of determination for you. I love you guys. I value you. And once again, please share the show with someone you know, love and trust. If this message hits you right in your heart today, send the link to somebody so they can listen to it. You owe that to them. You owe it to them. Give them value. Show them where you're getting your skills. Show them where you're getting your elevation. I would appreciate it. And I guess I'm going to tell you what, they're going to appreciate it too.

8:25So get after your shit today, guys. Okay. And I will be back tomorrow with another dose of determination and I'll tell you another story and give you other takeaways. So again, thank you for listening. Thank you for your almost nine, 10 minutes. I appreciate you. okay i truly do and uh hell once again go to the determined society.com and sign up for updates please we got a lot of cool shit going on there brand new website design all the ways that you can be involved in enter the determined society on a more deep level so please go do that leave a review on apple spotify youtube wherever you wherever you want but i just need you to know that every single one of them I read personally.

9:16And I wish I knew how to get a hold of everybody and say thank you. Because I truly, truly appreciate everything that you guys have done for me. So again, keep your promise to yourself today because tomorrow will be tested. And until then, stay determined.

What happens when you stop negotiating with yourself and start doing what you said you were going to do?

In the first-ever Dose of Determination, Shawn French breaks down a simple but powerful truth: real change starts by keeping the promises you make to yourself.

Determination is not about waiting for motivation. It is about showing up when you are tired, frustrated, overwhelmed, or simply do not feel like doing the work.

Whether your promise is getting to the gym, starting the business, making the extra sales calls, improving your health, or being more present with your family, every promise you keep builds confidence, discipline, and self-trust.

In this episode, Shawn shares why discipline matters more than motivation, why self-shame does not create growth, and why becoming the person capable of achieving your goals starts with what you do today.

Ask yourself:

What is the one thing I keep telling myself I am going to do but continue putting off?

Make the promise. Keep the promise.
