In short

How marketers can mine X (formerly Twitter) for viral hooks using Grok and advanced search queries, then adapt what’s working to their own marketing.

Guests

Daniel Murray (Marketing Millennials) tests X marketing workflows and uses Grok to surface trending, high-engagement posts; Jay Schwetelson (Do This, Not That; subjectline.com) explains X advanced search syntax and how to filter for virality.

Key claims

X’s query/search features let you find posts by engagement thresholds and content type; Grok can generate a short list of relevant trending posts; there are “no original ideas,” only new spins—don’t copy, adapt.

Notable examples

Grok prompt to “find five posts” in a niche with high engagement in the last 48–72 hours; X query like (marketing) min_faves:50000 to find posts with at least 50k hearts today, plus optional filters (retweets/comments, date ranges, images/media).

0:07Welcome to a new special series called The Bathroom Break. That extra 10 minutes you either have to listen to marketing tips or use the bathroom or both. But I don't recommend both, but that's your choice. This collab is going to be super fun. We have Daniel Murray from the Marketing Millennials and me, Jay Schwetelson, from the Do This Not That podcast and subjectline.com. each episode in the series. We are going to go over quick tips about different marketing topics. And if you want to be in the bathroom, fine, just don't tell us about it. Thanks for checking it out. All right, we are back for another episode of The Bathroom Break.

0:41I'm here with the Mr. Marketing Millennial, Daniel Murray, and this is Joe Shlettleson from Do This, Not That. We're going to be talking about how to really find some vital stuff using social media that people are sleeping on. But before we do that, Daniel, let me ask you a question. Allie has been making me wear loafers when we go out at night and stuff because she's like you need to look more smooth than you do so I've been doing that and then I won the other night and then the back of my heels started bleeding and I felt like I was I don't know like I was trying to survive it was terrible do you wear loafers are you a loafer guy have you ever been all in on loafers I went all in on loafers like two years ago I bought one pair I mean if I consider all in but I wore one pair because I wanted to test it out.

1:26And I wore like to some dinners and I was like feeling good about myself that like I'm wearing Ari, same as Ari wanted me. And then I went to a conference and lost one loafer and I spent most of my money I've ever spent on shoes. And it was like, and you think it's a lot of money, but it's not a lot of money because I only like max spent like 150 bucks on shoes. Um, but I never want to buy loafers again because I lost one pair and I'm, I won one shoe out of the pair and I'm, it's worse than losing anything. How do you lose one shoe? That's hard to do. It's really hard to do. I came home and I was like, and that shoe was sitting in my closet for a good four months, like hoping that I was hoping it would turn up.

2:13It never turned out. Well, we're going to show you how to turn up some social media stuff. Yeah, what a cheesy thing. Listen, we're going to talk about X right now, the former Twitter. and this has nothing to do, it doesn't matter if you like Elon Musk, if you like X as a marketer, X is a very unique platform because it's the only social platform where you can query it in certain ways and then you can find things and then you can apply it to all of your marketing and all the stuff that you're doing. And so there's some tricks and hacks and things. So Dan, you want to go through the first one and then I'll go through the next one.

2:44Yeah, so one thing I've been testing out a lot is using Grok because Grok is X's LIM, like their chat platform. So what I've been doing is like writing a prompt that says like, find me five posts that say XYZ or in your niche that is trending right now that have high engagement in the last 48 hours or 72 hours or the last week. And I'll type that in. do grok and it will spit out um like what actual post that actually was happening and then the next step is that what i'll do is obviously like the step you're going to talk about next but as i'll go go deeper and search more on on that topic but grok gives you a good foundation of like here are like some five or six, seven posts that are interesting in your niche in the last few weeks or the last few days.

3:51Yeah, Grok, G-R-O-K is great for that. It's the embedded AI tool that is on X. So here's how, what I use. So when Twitter was around, there was something called advanced search. It went away for a while, but now it's back. And I'm gonna tell you exactly how to use it in the new X. It's so easy. You go into the regular way that you would search on X. Okay, and let's say you wanted to find the most viral posts right now about anything to do with marketing. It could be anything. You could write shoelaces. It doesn't matter. You write, you take parentheses, and you write whatever the word is in parentheses.

4:24So you write the parentheses symbol, marketing, and you close parentheses. Then you hit space, and you write the word M-I-N, like minimum. M-I-N underscore babes, F-A-B-E-S, colon, and then a number. So you do the parentheses marketing, min underscore faves, colon, and let's say you put in 50 ,000, right? What that means is you're asking X to right now search for only those posts that have the word marketing in it that have at least 50 ,000 hearts that people favor today. You could change that to 5 ,000, 500 ,000, 1 ,000, a million. It doesn't matter. And by doing that, you'll pick up the most viral posts on whatever it is that you're interested in.

5:08right now and then you can apply it to all your marketing and all the other areas of stuff that you're doing you can go deeper into that too and you can say men retweet so like if they have a minimum retweets because that shows people sharing you can say men comments um you also could like filter date ranges so you could say like from this date to that day um so you can go like even deeper into this and you could say like show me post with only images like like show me like there's actual queries and i can put that in but it's like i think it's like filter colon images filter colon media like and it will it will filter for like the certain types of posts too so you can go really deep into the search and this is like how you can write like jay said how you can write different types of content, how you can see what hooks are working with your audience.

6:04So it's a good way. And you, I recommend, this is a search way, but I recommend like going onto other platforms too, like Reddit and LinkedIn and Instagram and seeing scrolling accounts or like subreddits that have in your niche and seeing what posts, like on Reddit, you can go search on the top like top posts or new hot posts and you can see what are the hot posts in yours in your sub reddit on on instagram you can go to the top accounts and usually people pin their top posts so you can see the most recent 90 days um so there's a lot of ways to filter like what ways to see what is working it doesn't mean you copy i but i i i truly believe there's no original ideas out there.

6:51There's only your spin on the original idea. I don't say steal the post, but just take that post and have a take with it, and then it's a new idea. And if any of this, because for a podcast, it's hard to listen to this, and what do they say? Just go to ChatGPT or Perplexity or Clodd and say, how do you do, how do you look for viral posts? What's advanced search on X? How do you do that? It'll tell you exactly what we just talked about, but it's worth doing, and it doesn't matter what you feel about X. This can apply to all of your marketing. All right. So back to the beginning, Daniel, another thing that Allie made me start wearing, which is another disaster, are linen shirts.

7:29So she made me start wearing linen shirts. And the problem is I put them on and it looks fine when I put it on. But within 10 minutes, I look like somebody took the shirt, scrunched it into a ball. It couldn't be more wrinkled. I couldn't look worse. I just look like a disheveled loser and I sweat through the shirt. The whole thing is a nightmare. Do you ever have to wear linen clothing? I feel like I used to, I tried to do it in Europe once because I thought it was like the thing, but I feel like linen is the itchiest shirt in the world. It's the itchiest shirt in the world and I hate itchy shirts.

8:04I'd rather wear like a soft, what do you call it? like blue lemon type shirt that will soak up. But you've been on the move of changing. You're going from short sleeve shirts to linen shirts, loafers. So you're really getting a whole wardrobe change. This is like the emptiness syndrome. You get a whole wardrobe change. Yeah, it's not a good phase I'm entering in. It's called the embarrassing loser phase. It's not going well. I'll report back. I'm sure something else will be really embarrassing. He told me he's speaking on main stage in Unbound. So if you see him, he's probably going to wear loafers, a linen shirt, a short-sink linen shirt.

8:51Yeah, it's going to be a party, and we should all shout out his outfit when he's there. All right. All right. Thank you very much for nothing. Well, everybody, I appreciate you all, and we'll catch you at the next one. Daniel, come on, man. I got to get back to work. Get out of there. All right. While he's still in there, this is Jay. Check out my podcast, Do This, Not That, for marketers. Each week, we share really quick tips on stuff that can improve your marketing. And I hope you give it a try. Oh, here's Daniel. He's finally out. Back from my bathroom break. This is Daniel. Go follow the Mark and Millet podcast.

9:26But also tune into this series. It's once a week, the bathroom break. We talk about marking tips that we just spew out.
