In short

The episode follows Dr. Gerhard Koenig and his wife, Ariel Koenig, whose marriage deteriorated after Koenig discovered Ariel’s emotional affair with TerraPower coworker Jeffrey Miller. Key claims include: Ariel used WhatsApp and a code word “HALU” (High Assay, Low Enriched Uranium) to coordinate contact; she deleted messages and used a VPN; Koenig became controlling, recorded conversations, and demanded physical affection.

Notable examples

Koenig unlocked Ariel’s phone in December 2024; he mirrored her WhatsApp messages in real time; during a March 2025 Oahu hike (Palipuka Lookout Trail), Ariel says Koenig tried to kill her with a syringe and rocks, while Koenig claims self-defense after Ariel attacked him. Two nurse hikers witnessed the assault.

0:06It was March of 2025 in Hawaii, the paradise of the Pacific. On the island of Oahu, March meant mild and pleasant weather, warm days and cool nights.

0:20Gerhardt Konig:The rainy season was wrapping up, the pulmonary was beginning to bloom, and humpback whales were heading to the island's waters in droves for mating season. But that March, there was trouble in the water, too. A high-powered couple, a nuclear engineer and her anesthesiologist husband, were in town from the neighboring island of Maui. They had planned the trip to celebrate the engineer's 36th birthday. The two of them were hiking up the ridgeline of one of the most historic hikes in the area. Historic and dangerous, too. Located just five miles outside of downtown Honolulu, the trail is known for its strong winds, narrow pathways, loose dirt underfoot, and a close to 2 ,000-foot vertical drop into the valley below.

1:14Gerhardt Konig:Falling, a blogger once wrote, is simply not an option. This case of he said, she said ultimately came down to husband versus wife. Who are the people we most trust in society? The person we probably trust the most in our lives is our spouse, right, or our partner.

1:40This is The Opportunist, an original podcast from Podcast One. It's just so unusual for it to happen like this and for it to almost happen like some sort of horror movie. You're listening to a story told in one episode called Gerhard Koenig, Alpine Divorce in the Aloha State. I wouldn't believe this case unless I covered it myself. I'm Sarah James McLaughlin. In this episode, we follow the story of Gerhard and Ariel Koenig. Married for close to seven years, they were on the birthday trip of a lifetime when adventures started to feel more like a wager on someone's life. Whose life? It depends on who you ask.

2:48Gerhard Koenig was born in South Africa, emigrated to San Diego, California as a teenager, and studied bioengineering in college. At 20 years old, he married his high school sweetheart. They had two children together, Ophelia and Emil. All the while, he was doing commendable work, engineering tissue, specifically blood vessels, that could help people alleviate symptoms from blocked arteries in the heart. A few years later, he and his family made their way across the country to the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, where Koenig furthered his medical school education. In 2013, he began a four-year residency in anesthesiology.

3:34Halfway through that residency, after more than a decade and a half of marriage, he and his first wife separated.

3:442016 was a big year for Koenig. He was hired as an anesthesiologist at Pittsburgh's McGee Women's Hospital and started teaching part-time for the University of Pittsburgh. 2016 was also the year he met Ariel, a nuclear engineer who was also living in the Pittsburgh area.

4:03Gerhardt Konig:They were introduced through the dating site eHarmony, a platform that's tailored to people looking to find long-term relationships. Every 14 minutes, someone finds love on eHarmony, the site boasts. Are you looking for true love? Absolutely. Then you'd be perfect for eHarmony. You know, we've helped over a million people get married. Huh. Koenig and Ariel were living in two separate Pittsburgh suburbs, about an hour apart from one another. They made their relationship work by switching off where they spent their time. One week, they stayed at Koenig's place, then the next, Ariel's. I think they were boyfriend-girlfriend for about two years before they got married.

4:49Everything was going good. They had a good relationship for the first couple years. In 2018, they got married. And mid-pandemic, they welcomed their first child together, Olin. While Koenig and Ariel both liked living in Pittsburgh, they shared the dream of moving somewhere with better weather. They felt that they wanted to be somewhere more safe, a little better standard of living, a little more of a secure community. Arielle quit her job in Pittsburgh and was hired for a remote position at TerraPower, a nuclear engineering company based out of the Seattle area. Koenig found work at an anesthesiology practice in Maui And in early 2023, Koenig and Ariel's son, Vigo, was born.

5:39Gerhardt Konig:The family finally made their move to Maui just a few weeks later. Emil, a teenager at the time, moved with them. For the next two years, the family seemed to be living their dream life. I don't know the exact figure, but I know he was making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year at Maui Health. So he was obviously pretty well-to-do. He was a reputable doctor. But in the summer of 2024, something changed. Ariel traveled for work three or four times a year, and whenever she did, she and Koenig checked in with each other at the end of each day. But on one trip that lasted only a couple of days, Ariel went AWOL on the final night.

6:24Gerhardt Konig:What Koenig learned about that night sent him into a tailspin that lasted for years.

7:09After Koenig and Ariel moved to Maui in early 2023, they appeared to be living their best lives. Koenig's job as an anesthesiologist at a community hospital was within walking distance of his new home, which meant he could spend more time with Ariel and their kids.

7:27Gerhardt Konig:But when Ariel took a work trip in the late summer of 2024, her relationship with Koenig started taking a turn. She was, at some point, started this emotional affair with her co-worker at TerraPower, Jeffrey Miller. Koenig didn't know about it. Yet. But as the months went on, Koenig grew suspicious of Ariel. He says he caught her talking in a far too friendly tone with Jeff during work calls. Koenig couldn't shake his hunch that something was going on behind his back. So one night, around December of 2024, when Ariel was asleep, he unlocked her phone himself. He found countless personal WhatsApp messages between her and Jeff.

8:15This is Jeremy Uro. He's a reporter for Courthouse News Service. He's based in Hawaii and has reported extensively on this story. I mean, I don't know specifically, like, what caused Ariel to begin the emotional affair. There were probably something in their relationship that wasn't going well. But I know it went from a married couple to all of a sudden she's talking to this other guy and Gerhardt's becoming increasingly on edge and manipulative and controlling. Days after his discovery, Koenig and Ariel had a couple's trip planned in California with two of their friends. On the eve of that trip, a distraught Koenig took his investigating to a new level.

9:01He mirrored Ariel's WhatsApp messages to his computer screen and began watching her digital interactions with Jeff in real time. Here's Jeremy again discussing those WhatsApp messages. They would text sometimes all day long, several days in a row, and they would send each other like winky faces or smiling faces or stuff like that. I don't think there was anything more sexually explicit than that. But we also know that Ariel was deleting messages and that she got a VPN and stuff. They were definitely emotionally explicit and flirty. They're like sending selfies to each other. They have a code word for when Gary isn't around her.

9:51Remember that Ariel and Jeff were both in the nuclear industry. Their code word was HALU. HALU is an acronym, High Assay, Low Enriched Uranium. It's a kind of fuel that powers the advanced nuclear reactors their company was working to roll out. Basically, she would text Jeffrey Miller, and if she was going to be around her husband a lot that day, she'd be like, there's going to be a lot of hail you that day, which meant like we can't text a lot because I'm going to be with my husband. I don't know what the deleted messages say, but it was very clear that what she had with this coworker was more than a friendship.

10:35Koenig realized that he may never know the full extent of Ariel's relationship with Jeff, and that fact was hard for him to swallow. Once they made it to California for their couple's trip, he confronted Ariel about Jeff. She confessed to an emotional affair, apologized, and recommitted to her relationship with Koenig.

10:58Gerhardt Konig:When the couple returned home to Maui, Ariel started looking for a new job. She and Koenig were listening to audiobooks together about how to heal from an affair. And they began counseling sessions. Ariel's relationship with Jeff, whatever it had entailed, was a soon-to-be distant memory. But Koenig wasn't buying it. He thought Ariel was minimizing the affair. And he was becoming increasingly neurotic about it. After this emotional affair, things became really toxic. He became controlling. Koenig bought an audio recorder with the goal of catching Ariel in a lie. If she told one set of facts to him and another to her mom or best friend, he reasoned he could play the recording back for the others and let them know that Ariel was lying.

11:47By the end of 2024, Koenig was demanding sex and physical touch.

11:54Gerhardt Konig:If Ariel didn't feel like cuddling, she'd pay for it. Koenig would bring up the WhatsApp messages all over again. Whenever he would get mad at Ariel, he'd be like, how could you do this to us? You know, you cheated on me, like over every little thing. At least that's what she said. After continued counseling and a pleasant family trip in the early months of 2025, Koenig and Ariel had some small strides. Plus, Ariel's birthday was coming up in March, and they needed a reason to celebrate. For Ariel's birthday, their relationship was on the ropes. So both sides were like, let's try to make this work.

12:35We have kids together. You have kids from a previous marriage. We've been together a long time. Things weren't going well, but both sides were kind of like, we want to make this marriage work somehow. So we planned a trip to Oahu where they had never been before. And they said, maybe this can be a chance to rekindle our romance. An outsider might even think they'd put the worst of their struggles behind them. I believe they were staying around the Honolulu area, and Gerhardt had planned a hike for the Pali Puka Lookout Trail, which for locals is a very well-known trail. The Pali Puka Trail looks out over the Nu 'uanu Valley amidst the Ko 'olo mountain range.

13:23The trail is the site of the 1795 Battle of Nu 'uanu, led by King Kamehameha the Great. The king was from the island of Hawaii, now sometimes referred to as the Big Island. He had sailed to Oahu with his army of warriors with the goal of conquering the island, and ultimately unifying all of the Hawaiian islands. His warriors won the battle,

13:50Gerhardt Konig:but it was intense and bloody, with countless Oahu warriors falling, or jumping, hundreds of feet to their deaths. Modern day hiking bloggers often warn of the dangers of the trail. One commented on the trail's dirt, calling it powdery, and saying that it feels a lot like concrete pre-mix, making it hard to retain traction. Another said matter-of-factly, if you are not comfortable being inches away from a 2 ,000-foot vertical cliff, this is not the hike for you. You know, you're up hundreds of feet in altitude, and there's this very steep drop. If you fall down the Pauly lookout, you're not, that's it.

14:31You know, no one's going to survive that. The morning of the hike on Ariel's birthday, Koenig and Ariel had a breakfast at their hotel.

14:42Gerhardt Konig:Koenig gifted Ariel a necklace made of koa wood, the wood of Hawaiian kings and warriors. Their dinner reservation was set for the evening. He gave her a birthday card too. Happy birthday, Angel Face, it read. There isn't an obstacle in this world too hard for me to fight through for you. The kids and I hit the jackpot with you. He signed it. Love always, G. After breakfast, the couple made their way to the Palipuka Trail in their rental car. Locals are familiar with the trail, but these days, it's not state-maintained. It's been determined to be unsafe by Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources, and hikers must brush past a do not enter sign to start their ascent.

15:28Gerhardt Konig:Here's where we get into the he said, she said of the story. He brings her to this trail and they have different accounts of what happens. According to Ariel, once she and Koenig had been hiking for a few minutes, she became uncomfortable with how high the ridge was and decided to stop. up. Koenig, she said, went ahead for a few minutes and then came back down to her level. On their descent together down the trail, they paused to take a selfie. That's when Ariel said Koenig grabbed her by the shoulders. At first she thought it was a joke, but then he began shoving her towards the cliff's edge, a mere ten or so feet away.

16:12Gerhardt Konig:I'm so sick of this shit, he said to her. She threw her 5 '6", 145-pound frame to the ground. Koenig, about 5 '10 and around 160 pounds, then straddled her. According to Ariel, he had a syringe in his hand. She was screaming and biting him, but she said he muffled her cries. No one's going to hear you out here, he said. Nobody's coming to save you. Eventually, she said she batted the syringe out of his hand and tried to reason with him, saying their children would be orphans. She would die, she said, and he would go to jail. The wife and mother testifying she tried reasoning with her husband. He seemed to pause and calm down, maybe contemplating the possibility.

17:02Gerhardt Konig:She thought for a moment that she could escape. That's when Ariel says the violence escalated. But as quickly as it began, Koenig snapped back into attack mode, grabbing a lava rock just smaller than a softball and beating her with it in the head. She says Gerhard then jumped on top of her, grabbed a rock, and she says that he was bashing her head and her face with this rock at least 10 times. And she's calling for help. She's screaming. Koenig has a different version of the story. According to him, on the couple's way up the ridge, Ariel brought up a sore subject, her co-worker Jeff. She told Koenig she had to travel with Jeff again for another work trip.

17:55Gerhardt Konig:Koenig was not okay with that. He said it sunk into him that the two of them were not on the same page regarding the emotional affair, that they might never be on the same page about it. With that, he says he stomped off further up the trail in anger and Ariel went in the opposite direction. When he made his way back down the trail, he said he was surprised to see that Ariel was still there. He remembers her being apologetic. Around when they took that selfie together, Koenig said it was Ariel that pushed him. In his testimony, Gerhard claims a fight broke out and Ariel was the one who shoved him as they were taking a selfie by the cliff.

18:41Gerhardt Konig:He responded by walking toward her and asking what was going on. That's when, he said, Ariel started screaming for help. She grabbed his wrists and pulled him to the ground, where the two of them began to scuffle. Once he freed his arms from her grip, he said she started holding on to his testicles. And it was she who grabbed the nearby rock and started hitting him in the side of the face. He grabbed the rock out of her hand and hit her twice with it, he said, in self-defense. We can all debate whether he tried to kill her or not, but even Gerhard in his own defense said it was self-defense. So we all know he attacked her on some level.

19:22Gerhardt Konig:here's the part of the story that Koenig and Ariel agree on it's when two fellow hikers both of them nurses appeared and witnessed what was happening it's at that point when he's you know hitting her in the head Ariel's screaming for help she's screaming bloody murder two nurses come along and the nurses testify that they saw him hit her once before he saw them and stopped. He's trying to kill me, Ariel said, crawling toward them on her belly. She was screaming, he's trying to kill me, help me. She was screaming bloody murder. As soon as they brought her down, she gave her story pretty quickly and it was pretty consistent throughout that she was saying her husband tried to kill her.

20:12Gerhardt Konig:Meanwhile, Koenig stood there, as one witness described, cold and emotionless. One of the witnesses called 911. And as for Koenig, he went back up the mountain. Here's Jeremy again, discussing police body camera footage from that morning. If you look at the picture of Ariel, after they brought her down the highway, her entire face is covered in blood. I mean, I don't think any, I don't think the median person would conclude that she was only hit in the head twice because there's like blood all over her face. As paramedics came to rush Ariel to the hospital, Koenig was contemplating suicide. Koenig said he felt hopeless for his marriage, for his career, and for the fact that he'd become violent.

21:04Gerhardt Konig:He decided to himself that he was going to jump over the cliff's edge. Both sides agree that Gerhardt was, you know, thinking of jumping off, that he was in a really bad place. But first, he FaceTimed his son Emil to say goodbye. One of the most important points of this whole saga is, well, Gerhardt is up there. and he's trying to evade police up on top of this mountain on the Hawaiian Islands. He calls his son from his first marriage, Emil. Koenig claimed he was disoriented, saying to himself in disbelief, She said I tried to kill her. But Emil saw his father covered in blood and heard a clear confession.

21:52Gerhardt Konig:According to him, Koenig said he'd tried to kill Ariel and was going to jump to his death. Either way, Koenig credits his son for helping him realize that he had a choice in whether he lived or died. It was Emil, Koenig said, who saved his life. After the video call, Emil made his way to Ariel's parents' house. They, too, had relocated to Maui just months after Koenig and Ariel moved there. Their house was on the same street as the couple's. Meanwhile, Koenig remained on the mountain, contemplating his next steps. About an hour later, he called Emil again. Emil told Koenig that his step-grandparents were now in the know, that he told them Koenig had confessed to trying to kill their daughter.

22:38Gerhardt Konig:Koenig hung up and thought about ending it all over again. Nearly eight hours later, he retreated back down the mountain. The HPD is looking, Honolulu Police Department is looking for him for hours. They're about to give up. And for whatever reason, Gerhard finally decides to come down.

23:06The birthday trip Gerhard Koenig took with his wife, Ariel, to Oahu in March of 2025 had started out well enough.

23:15Gerhardt Konig:Rejuvenated from their first day on the island, which they spent in the spa, the couple woke up the next day to have breakfast at their hotel, then took a five-minute drive to the historic Palipuka Trail. But the trail's Do Not Enter sign served as a warning for what was to come, a physical struggle on the edge of a cliff, Ariel left with blood-covered lacerations to her face, and Koenig hiding somewhere out on the Koolo mountain range. It took close to eight hours. But right before sunset, Koenig came down. Here's Jeremy again. When he uses the initialism HPD, he's referring to the Honolulu Police Department.

23:56HPD is driving by. He's in the bushes trying to run off the side of the highway. And police sees him. He tries to flee when they see him. And eventually they apprehend him. Koenig was arrested and taken into custody for attempted second-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty. Just days after Koenig was arrested, Ariel filed a restraining order against him,

24:22Gerhardt Konig:citing years of abuse in their marriage, including extreme jealousy and possessiveness. Koenig was denied bail. His employer, Maui Health, suspended him, and he was placed in pre-trial detention. A couple of months later, in May of 2025, Ariel filed for divorce and sought full custody of their two children. The trial started in March of 2026, nearly a year after the alleged incident, and jury selection took longer than usual. I was there for jury selection And so many prospective jurors said that they could not view this case fairly because of what they had seen on the news, because of their own experience with domestic violence, where they were prone to believe that he was guilty before the trial even started.

25:13So it was hard even fielding a jury. It took like almost a week. The arguments were compelling on both sides. There was all kinds of interesting arguments by the defense, including the fact that a lot of people do this hike. Do you really think he would be dumb enough to do this in broad daylight, where people could walk by like the two nurses and see it happening? Koenig's internet search history pre-Oahu was a record of him researching the cost of divorce

25:48Gerhardt Konig:and scouting for hikes. He found ones that were safe and easy as well as others that were dangerous and difficult, such as Polly Puka. Gerhard Koenig back on the stand with prosecutors walking him through a detailed digital trail, questioning his online searches on remote hikes. Clearly he had an interest in knowing which hikes were dangerous and which hikes were not. And his research told him that this hike was dangerous. And that's the hike he ended up taking Ariel on. Ariel's side of the story has drawn some skepticism too. Just days after the alleged incident with Koenig on the hiking trail, for example, she secretly moved over$100 ,000 from a bank account she shared with Koenig into a personal account.

26:39The WhatsApp messages with her married coworker Jeffrey are also suspicious. I think a lot of people wonder if her story was 100 % truthful or not, because when she was messaging this Jeffrey Miller, she was deleting her WhatsApp messages, and she got a VPN to hide her browser history, which she said was to watch football games or something. And then there was the syringe. Or was there? Koenig's job as a doctor would give him access to that sort of medical equipment, of course. Still, there was little evidence of one due to Koenig's state of mind and the wilderness of the terrain. I mean, I think the prosecution argues that, like, while he was up there in that catatonic state or whatever, wandering around the forest for several hours that he disposed of it, or he threw the syringe off the edge or something so that police couldn't recover it.

27:41And if he did, that would have been smart. If you throw it off the edge, there's like a several hundred foot drop. And with tons of bushes and trees and shrubberies, like, I don't think HPD has yet even tried to recover it. I don't even know if they could if they tried. It would be extraordinarily difficult to find, and it would require a lot of manpower, and it would take a really long time. The jury deliberated, and after eight full hours, finally reached a verdict. They found him guilty, but not of attempted murder. After deliberating for more than eight hours, a jury found Dr. Gerhard Koenig guilty, of a lesser charge of attempted manslaughter for attacking his wife with a rock and attempting to push her off a cliff, leaving her badly injured.

28:30He was spared the more serious charge of attempted murder. Attempted manslaughter may be a lesser charge, but it's one that still carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison. Obviously, the prosecution wanted him to serve up to life in prison. They wanted to paint this picture of second-degree attempted murder that was premeditated. And that's kind of why they went so methodically through his web history, his actions leading up to the hike. They wanted to say that like, he planned this out and he was very sure of what he was doing. The defense, I mean, I think they realized that it wasn't looking good for Gerhardt.

29:17So they wanted to remind people of the rule of law, which says he's only guilty if he is guilty beyond any reasonable doubt. If you have any doubt in your mind, you have to vote not guilty. All sides agreed on one aspect of the case, that Koenig was objectively not okay. I think the one thing everyone agreed on was that Gerhardt was a bit of a mess, emotionally, psychologically. Not to mention, he'd never been charged with a serious crime before. And between whatever doubt the jury had in their mind and the fact that the lines were a little blurred, I guess they were able to conclude that this attack was more of a spontaneous thing rather than something he had premeditated for months.

30:17Koenig was supposed to be sentenced in August. However, after his trial, his attorney filed a motion seeking to overturn the conviction. Koenig and his legal team claimed that the jury did not unanimously agree that he intended to kill his wife. They also claimed that a juror used a phone to communicate during the trial. In early September, the judge called all the jurors back into court to question them on the allegations. Just recently, the judge ruled against a new trial and let Koenig's conviction stand.
