In short
The episode of The Rest is Football (Micah Richards, Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker) focuses on Carabao Cup fallout and early-season Premier League form. Main topic: Manchester United’s problems after losing at home to Brighton despite leading 2-0; Carrick’s post-match frustration (“we have a number of problems”) and pressure on him.
Key claims
United weren’t backed enough in the summer; the team lacks defensive quality and confidence; Brighton’s comeback showed United’s unorganised pressing after the first press.
Notable examples
Maguire and Dalot pushing high; Dalo blamed for mistakes; Brighton creating “three, four, five” chances after equalising. Another topic: scrutiny and transfer talk around 15-year-old JJ Gabriel (tapped-up concerns, pressure from representation/renaming for marketability).
Guests
Micah Richards (former player/pundit), Alan Shearer (former player/pundit), Gary Lineker (former player/pundit).

2:11Alan Shearer:Hello and welcome to The Rest is Football with Micah Richards, Alan Shearer and me, Gary Lineker. We're recording this on Thursday after the Carabao Cup games And there were some, well, interesting games I would say
2:27Gary Lineker:Where are you Alan? I'm in Marbella at a friend's house playing golf Got absolutely battered 7-5 in the first game 7-5? 7-5, how embarrassing is that? We played alright as well but they were just too good for us They shot 16 under as a pair So you've got no chance when they're that good at golf It was great to see, but it hurt. Micah looks bemused. What does seven and five mean? You know, not everyone is a goal fan. Can you break it down in layman's terms, please?
2:57Alan Shearer:Seven up with five holes to play. So in match play, you can't win. So basically, they'd pretty much lost every hole. Almost.
3:08Gary Lineker:Yeah, they were miles better than us. Where are you? I'm in Ibiza for just a few days. Nice. Nice.
3:16Alan Shearer:I haven't had a break since the World Cup, so I had a lot going on. So I didn't really want to go away in July, August, because it's so busy everywhere. So I just wait for September. And here I am. Have you been down to Oshawa? Micah, my Oshawa days are long gone. I'll be like, what's that granddad bloke doing here? Why is he there?
3:35Gary Lineker:Calvin's still on there. There's still time. I think he's a Friday night, isn't he? He's Friday, Tuesday, something like that. No idea. Get yourself there, guys. Come on.
3:42Alan Shearer:All right, I'll be there. Reggie, I'll do that. On a rave, on a rave. I went to amnesia, but I've forgotten all about it. Oh, my God. Please, please, let's talk football. We'll start with Manchester United having two goals up, obviously at home to Brighton, who started the season very well. Brighton come back and win. Pressure mounting again on Manchester United.
4:11Gary Lineker:Yeah, without doubt. I mean, with the results that they've had, I still say that they should have backed him more in the summer, Michael Carrick. He did exceptionally well in getting them to where he did. Champions League football, finishing where they did last season. They should have backed him more in the summer, but they didn't. Having said that, no excuse for those performances. I mean, 2-0 up. And you could hear the noise, you could hear the fans and the booing and everything else that when they came off to lose that game and get dumped out of the cup. We'll put more pressure on him without a doubt.
4:38Don't often feel sorry for managers, but I feel a little bit sorry for him. I don't know if you've seen his interview after the game. It's almost like he had things to say, but he didn't want to say them. And then it just looked like it was a little bit lost because the frustration he was feeling inside and he couldn't articulate it the way he wanted to. He didn't want to throw anyone under the bus. And you know, his persona on screen is that he's very calm and very measured, but he could see yesterday was absolutely raging.
5:12Alan Shearer:I think the primary quote probably came was we have a number of problems. What problems do they have on the pitch for a start, Micah? It's difficult because if you look at the Man City game, I'd say the first 20, 25 minutes they did okay. Yeah. Until Phil Foden got sent off. Then after that, there was sort of a lack of ideas. When you're having your defenders in attacking positions, I remember Maguire was really high at one point. Dalo gets into positions and then Dogu gets into positions. But at times when it goes into the box, there's a real lack of quality. And then the decision happened to them, sort of feeling sorry for themselves a little bit.
5:54So you go into this game, which both teams changed players in fairness. They didn't have the strongest teams out. But you still expected Man United at home to win the game. And it's not clicking. It's not clicking at all. I agree with Al in terms of defensively, they need reinforcements, but it looks like it's a confidence thing again. A lot of players playing within themselves. Santos, I feel a little bit sorry for because he's coming to the squad. He got brought in for 50 million pounds and everyone expected him to hit the ground running. It's not that at the moment. Tielemans is a very good player, but it's not the most mobile team.
6:33So when you actually look at them tactically, When they try to get the ball back, they're finding it very difficult. At times in the game, they were pressing really high. As soon as they got beyond the first press Brighton, it was all a bit unorganised, no one really knowing what they needed to do. And again, it's just confidence. When Brighton got back into the game, they created three, four, five chances to go and win it. So yeah, it just feels as though it's not clicking on the field and Carrick needs to get that right ASAP.
7:03Gary Lineker:I think when you see the team that they put out. It wouldn't inspire me, to be honest. I think they're a good team. I don't think they're anything better than that. Defensively, miles off it. Forward positions, you're 2-0 up, and you should never lose the game. When you say defensively, though, Al, what do you mean? Because Joro's a good player. Yes, he's not had the matches required to get up to speed that he would like. Heaven's a very good player as well. You put two young players together at the back, they're always going to find it difficult. Dalo, he works so hard for the team, but he always seems to be at fault for a goal or when he's in an offensive position, doesn't make the right pass.
7:43And Madrari gives 100%. So I agree with you, definitely. You look at the defence. However, they are young players at the back. Two centre-halves, you expect them to make mistakes. It's just, it scrutinise more when it's Man United, especially with a run that Carrick's been on from the start of the season. Would you say that's fair?
8:02Gary Lineker:Well, because of the size of the football club and because of what he did and achieved last year and did so well getting them into Champions League football, then I think people expected them to perhaps go again and step up this season. But no, they haven't been anywhere near good enough as yet. I said, didn't I, last week, that they bought forwards, midfielders this summer and maybe perhaps looking defensively, but I'm not convinced in forward positions that they're as top as what they could have been.
8:30Alan Shearer:Oh, Manchester United, still one of the giants.
8:34Gary Lineker:Yeah.
8:35Alan Shearer:In the sense that now, obviously, they're a huge club, massive sport around the world. It's not what I'm saying now is that it's a long time since they were consistently successful. I think they're always put in there with Real Madrid and Barcelona, but they've not really competed with those clubs for quite some considerable time. The expectancy levels, I think, have probably dropped a bit at Manchester United these days. You know, we say, oh, they made it to the Champions League. That was really good. Maybe it's representative of the fact that they can't even keep 15-year-olds happy. So you've got JJ Gabriel, who's a wonder kid by most metrics.
9:13Alan Shearer:They think he's very, very special. And it seems that they've made it clear that they want to leave Manchester United at 15. Now, you couldn't ever have envisaged that sort of thing. And I know the game's changed in that sense to a degree. but you couldn't really have envisaged that happening a number of years ago with a super talent that was coming through. It's so hard, isn't it? Because we don't know all the details and we've got to understand our reach with our podcast because I totally agree with you, Gaz, in terms of this sort of thing doesn't normally get out, especially a player so young.
9:52There's been loads of reports it's to do with money and then opportunity. But at 15, whoever's representing him is going about it the wrong way because all that's doing is putting more pressure on such a young kid. I don't know if you've seen his clips. I don't know if you've seen his play. He's outrageous. Oh, yeah, I've seen a lot of his clips. He's absolutely outrageous, this player.
10:15Gary Lineker:When you say opportunities, he's 15 years of age. Does he feel as if he should be playing first-team football at 15 then, when you say that? Well, that's what I mean about whoever's representing him is obviously he's pushing a narrative that if you look at the forward players at United, thinking, well, he should be in and around it more often than not, even though he is 15. But I just, we've got to be careful with young players. Even Carrick as well in his interview yesterday when he got asked the question, he didn't really want to give it any thought because, again, it's a distraction of what's going on.
10:56I just feel sorry for the players being put in this position because of whoever's representing him. If he'd come out and said X, Y, Z, then I'd be like, well, what are you doing at that age? All you need to be doing is concentrating on your football. While you mention whoever's looking after him, it does appear to be his father, who was a former player, pretty good career, played a couple of times for the Republic of Ireland.
11:21Alan Shearer:Joe O 'Kirrell, I think you say I'm probably wrong. So he played for Arsenal and Brighton, two senior caps, as I just said. So I think he's probably the person guiding him on this. I mean, even the fact that they changed JJ Gabriel's name to JJ Gabriel because they thought it would be more marketable. More marketable. It's a bit early for that, I would suggest.
11:46Gary Lineker:Yeah, that's the thing. It's like, you've got to remember, it's 15 years of age, man. It's like, football's hard enough anyway. The scrutiny that's put upon you. So now, I mean, clearly he's been tapped up, hasn't he? Someone is clearly wanting him and trying to sign him. and it's inevitable that because of social media and everything else, it is going to get out. Maybe he wanted it to get out, but 15 years of age should be nothing, nothing other than playing the game on his mind. That's it. Yeah, but we've been in situations where we've burst onto the scene quite young. You know what I mean? You have, you have.
12:26Well, I have, yeah, and in the moment, you're sort of thinking, oh, I love this. I had all sorts of sponsors coming to me. I had all sorts of agents telling me this. I had all sorts of clubs ringing my dad's phone at the time, saying we can do this and we can do that. And as much as you don't think it is a distraction, it is. I'm telling you it is because it's on your mind. And then it comes with the pressure. And then when you're not performing, I remember playing for England at 18. I thought I'd made it. I actually thought I'd made it. I stopped doing all the things that got me to that place in the first, because everyone was telling me how good I was all the time.
13:06And then once you have a bad game, can you deal with that? I managed to get out of it because then I went out to Man City and won the league and all that sort of stuff. But I never became the player the hype suggested because I was in my own head constantly. It's a little bit different for him because he's a wonder kid. Although I was a wonder kid, he's really, really special. He looks like he could do anything. There's a distinct difference between a wonder kid defender and I wouldn't have killed him. Correct.
13:34Alan Shearer:Turned forward. But do you remember Freddie Udu? America, back in the day, Freddie Udu and everyone was talking about him. He was built bigger than anyone. He was scoring goals and all that sort of stuff. He went to the American team really early. And then I've heard him speak before. I said it was just too much pressure for him. Too much pressure for him. And by the end of it now, what was his career end up like? It was just, he had a good career. He didn't have an amazing career. And I just, I feel sorry that the young lad has been put in this position. I would say, obviously, we're treading carefully here because we don't know the ins and outs of this.
14:07Alan Shearer:There might be something that we didn't know about. So we need to be relatively cautious, particularly speaking about a young man, obviously prodigiously talented. So we don't quite know the circumstances, but I don't see this as a good thing at this stage of anyone's career where you kind of thrust into the headlines before you've actually really played any adult football. I know he's been playing way beyond his years and he's a super special talent, but we have seen super special talents that have never quite realised their potential. Hopefully he does. I've not seen him play a full 90 minutes.
14:44Alan Shearer:I've seen him in lots of clips. He really does look very, very special. I'm going to move over a little bit here because I think it works in the way that Arsenal and Max Downman has been handled and probably the way his representatives, I believe it's his parents as well. He came in this week. He's only at, what, 16 now, isn't he? And he scored two goals. The first goal was so, so beautiful. I've read a lot of the stories around Max Downman that he's very grounded, he's very humble, he's also super confident. I saw Marino talking about him, comparing him with Lamin-Yumal and said he's very similar in the sense that he's very confident.
15:27Alan Shearer:He's also humble, which is a difficult balance to strike, particularly at such a premature age.
15:35Gary Lineker:Yeah, I know I get financially and contracts are huge nowadays, even at that age. But as a 15-year-old, it should be nothing other than football. I don't care what it is. If you've got that much ability and that much talent, it should just be about football. And unfortunately, this has got out, when we're talking about it. It's not a good thing. Not at all. I think timing is key though, isn't it? With Max Dallman, it's a little bit different. Arteta's cooking up something and then it goes and wins the league. You can bring him into the League Cup. You can score a couple of goals. We can say it all looks great.
16:15And a well-run football club. Yes. So if you take it back to the other situation at Man United, because things have not been great over the last five years, I don't know, subconsciously we think, oh, well, Man United's not being run, but by all accounts, he's been given everything that he wants. But players come and go. So if Man United were top of the league or won a league last year and the kid wanted to leave, he wouldn't even be talking about it. It would be no problem. But it's the fact that the way the club at the moment is perceived or young player wants to get out of Man United because clubs not run very well.
16:54You said at the start about it wouldn't maybe happen in the past, but now people are now doubting whether Man United are the place to play their football. And you know, it's like with Man United when they brought through all the Neville brothers, etc, etc. It was a good place for young players to come and flourish. Maybe from their side, they don't think Man United is the best place to do that now. and that's a reflection maybe on the club rather than just young kid wants to leave and go somewhere else for money. That's the headline, isn't it? But really, we don't know the ins and outs, so we need to be careful and that's why moving on to Max Darman's situation, it looks so good because the way the club is being ran at the moment.
17:42Alan Shearer:Well, let's hope it resolves itself and obviously the wellbeing of the young player is always the most important thing, I would say. Before we move on to probably Arsenal, Brighton, I interviewed Fabian Herzler a few weeks ago before the start of the season. I was considerably impressed by the way he spoke, but I'm even more impressed by the way he's got his team playing. I mean, to go two down as well at Old Trafford and come back to win was really impressive. Could he be a special coach, Micah? Yeah, he's special. He is special. He has to be. It's not normal. It's not normal. You know when you did the interview with him, I listened to most of the people.
18:22Did you ask him how he does it? I know we have got the data. We know they've got the recruitment. But how does he manage to keep doing it? The team that he put out wasn't even his first time. But they all play away. They go 2-0 down and they still know or they stick to what the plan is within the game.
18:40Alan Shearer:He talked a lot and he mentioned it many times about non-negotiables. So you've got to play his way or it's the high way. So if you don't buy into it, you're not going to be part of it. Also, one of the other takes that I took from it was the recruitment process. It's not just about data. They go and find as many people as they possibly can that know the player, whoever it is. You know, whether it's his parents, they look at his school. So there was a lot of in-depth reporting. You can tell that he's, even though he's an exceptionally young coach, that is a leader. I talked to him about how it was to have the experience of players that are older than you in the squad.
19:24Alan Shearer:And he said, no, it's fine. I lent into them when I first came. And I also think it's important to get opinions of players. But even they know, even they know there are certain non-negotiables, particularly in terms of, I think, the height, the press, the counter press that he mentioned. I found him fascinating. So if you haven't listened to that, by the way, it's obviously on our feed. So I'd encourage you to do so, particularly Brighton fans at the moment.

19:53Gary Lineker:You know what you said about the recruitment, Micah? You also have to give the owner because he's gone and recruited him. Very much like they go and get their players. They went to get him. They obviously saw massive talent in him, the way he conducted himself and spoke. and that's why he's in the job and doing very, very well. And clearly, his players are buying into all his ideas because they're very good, Brighton. They'll cause some teams problems this year, I think, again. Where do we have Brighton? Can I change my list? We'll put them higher. A bit higher, you know, a bit higher.
20:34Alan Shearer:Yeah, we could definitely go higher with Brighton the way they've started the season. And do you know who they play on Saturday? Arsenal oh is it at Brighton or at Arsenal at Brighton oh that's a good game that is that's a biggie that's a big game good test that would be for Arsenal another little word on Pastel Gros again please yeah oh my is he 35 now what a lovely finish that was oh the composure there the little pretending to shoot little feint it wasn't a chop it was a feint wasn't it it was a little feint and then stroked to his left. Oh, he needs to come into my fantasy now. Oh yeah, he's coming into my fantasy football.
21:16He's running every game that I watch him. He's ridiculous. To think though, they got him back from Dortmund. And when he was at Dortmund, he did okay. He did all right. But he didn't have the same impact. Yes, he's a little bit older. But to have this in the Premier League, in the League Cup. Yeah, he's a very intelligent footballer he is. There you go. Little quiz question for you both. Go on. How many is a gross? Hold on a bit. Ein, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben. No, no, that's not it. Oh, we're not, no. No, it's a gross.
21:51Alan Shearer:You know, like you've got a dozen. Oh, you've got like a gross. A gross. Do you know what a gross is? Is it, what is it? Is it four? It's 12 dozen, which is 144. 12 dozen? 12 dozen. A dozen dozen. 12 twelves. 12-12
22:10Gary Lineker:that's a gross fucking hell you're having a great time in Ibiza by the way ain't you
22:19Alan Shearer:you need to get out more often I'm out here in the sunshine Arsenal we mentioned Max Downman he was probably the star of the show with that gorgeous finish the first one in particular the second one wasn't bad either but to come in and perform like that at his age I think we are looking at a special talent there aren't we and it'd be interesting to see how quickly because if you are that good and if your teammates are comparing you with Lamin-Yumao we know how early he got in as a regular at Barcelona I just wonder how Arsenal will kind of ease him into the team he's obviously he'll play Carabao Cup games he'll play FA Cup games but I wonder if you're that good how long they can keep him outside
23:04Gary Lineker:he is that good there's incredible talent but you also have to think I think as Mike has said before when we were talking about the situation at Man United, he's a very, very good club with a manager who understands him. But he's at the best club in terms of ability-wise because they've won the league and he's still shining. He's still doing well, which tells you how special he is. Yeah, I would say it's going to be difficult for him because if you look at the positions where he wants to play number 10 or off the right coming in, he's got Saka and Odegaard. you know he's got captain and vice captain essentially so he's only really going to play when they're injured or the last 10 minutes or 20 minutes of the game
23:46Alan Shearer:but again Micah I will say if he's that good that special Laminu Mal good if you end up being better than Saka or better than Odegaard you play or is that is this an English thing that we don't really trust our young kids that much yes that's what we do we build He's not too much. He has got incredible talent. We know that. We've seen it with our own eyes. But how you nurture that talent is completely different, isn't it? Like, Laminia Mao was doing crazy stuff at 13, 14. So is Max Downman. But is he doing better stuff than Saka would do? Is he doing better stuff than Odegaard would do in terms of control?
24:30That's my point here.
24:31Alan Shearer:We don't know yet, but if he's that good, then he will be doing better stuff. Because you put Lamin, your man, I presume, ahead of Saka, wouldn't you? Oh, yes, I would, yeah. There you go. That's just the point I'm making, that if he's a genuine possible superstar, then he will find himself inside much earlier than I think we anticipate. And also, where's his best position? I mean, we've not seen him enough, really, in first couple. I'm poseless, yeah. But he'd play off the right, can't he? Or as a 10, he looks special. Could he play off the left as well? Probably play anywhere, but... You don't want to be moving him around too many different positions, I would say, as well.
25:12Alan Shearer:But I think he'll be in... This is just a little prediction. I think he'll be in as a regular before the end of the season. No. No, I disagree. Only because, not in terms of ability-wise, guys. I think on ability, really good point. They want to nurture him. Not just to nurture, the way Arteta wants his players to do the defensive side, and that requires discipline. So to stick a 16-year-old in to do that, I think it'd be very difficult. Okay, let's take a break there. We'll discuss some of the other Carabao Cup games when we come back. This episode is brought to you by Guinness. Now that the Premier League is back, we've had a few weeks to settle into those familiar match day rituals.
25:58Alan Shearer:So do you have a plan at home, Alan?
26:02Gary Lineker:I do, yeah. If it's a three o 'clock kickoff, then I'll go with my pals at half twelve, one o 'clock to the pub in town, have a couple of pints of Guinness and then walk up to St. James' Park. Micah, when you're not working? No, just in, well, at home, cinema room, you know, got the game on, nice little Guinness.
26:21Alan Shearer:My favourite days are Sundays. Cook a roast before boys come round. We sit down, watch the footballs, nothing better. And a little Guinness helps as well. Liverpool came out on top. Spurs did actually finally get a goal. Conor Gallagher scored their first goal of the domestic season. So I think I want to talk about first was Saboisla's goal. I mean, there are not many players in world football strike it sweeter than him.
28:51Gary Lineker:Do you see the angle from behind the goal? Like the swazz and the bend on it. I mean, oh, what a volley. Brilliant. I was thinking about taking him at my fantasy because I needed more for him. I need him more for the ability that he has. And obviously he's been playing a little bit deeper. So he's not been really getting into the box like I wanted. But after he did that strike, he's not going nowhere. He's staying in.
29:17Alan Shearer:I said at the weekend, didn't I? I thought he could probably play as the 10 there. He definitely can play the 10. And it's just what you do then with Verts, you know. Because Verts is going to play. Verts is going to play for now. No matter what we all say, he's going to play. And I just feel as though, because someone is so versatile, can play centre and can play right back, he'll be the one who'll be sacrificed more than vert. He whacks it like you are. He can hit it sweet. I mean, who are better strikers of a footballing around the world at the moment? Do you think of... At the moment... Pureness of strike.
29:54For pureness, he is really good. Hey, Grimaldo's got a pure strike. Grimaldo his left foot is wicked Channoglu Channoglu yes he can wobble him he can wobble he can wobble he's right good
30:15Alan Shearer:at wobbling him
30:18Gary Lineker:big win for Liverpool after what happened last weekend they needed to get back to winning ways Spurs what a tough start they've had
30:26Alan Shearer:they've had a dreadful start haven't they I mean it's I mean yes they've got two draws but both goalless yeah he needs to turn things around pretty quickly
30:36Gary Lineker:huge can you imagine going having a defeat at the weekend going into the international break three weeks off on the back of that start that's why they desperately need a win at the weekend Spurs
30:48Alan Shearer:I thought a lot of teams played stronger teams than we've seen possibly in the past they weren't completely reserves or youth teams I think is it not because of the size of the squads Probably. And it's a good chance for them to give decent players a game. I suppose the thing is now, the squad is so much stronger that when you see a starting line, you go, oh, actually, that's pretty good. And then you realise it's still a second string in some ways. But speaking of one of those players that came in, Tammy Abraham got himself two goals for Villa. Coventry's tough start to the season continues. What's going on at Coventry?
31:25All the metrics, they play well, they don't score, they concede.
31:29Alan Shearer:I think you've just described what's going wrong I know but it's just you can't play that well and be in games and then lose all the time it's not great I think the bad side of that apart from the obvious that you're losing games is that if you're losing games when you feel like you're doing quite well what happens when you stop doing quite well I think they just need to dig in they seem to be fairly easy to score against at present and that in the Premier League, it's a big jump. Obviously, the other two promoted clubs have had better starts. I think for Frank and Cov, as we call them in Leicester, they really need a result soonish, I would say.
32:14Gary Lineker:I think that's one of the problems, is that when you look at Ipswich and you look at Hull and what they've done and how they've won games and then you look at Coventry, that's why it's such a bad look on Frank and Coventry at the minute. It's because the other two that have come up have been getting results and doing well, Hull have been unbelievable and doing well. So that's the thing that will hurt Frank as well, won't it? Just on that, can we try to explain to people the psychology behind it? Because, what, there's been four games already and obviously Coventry have been struggling. But there's still, what, 34 games left?
32:53Oh, it's a long, long way to go. You know, and it's almost like, even as footballers, I don't know, subconsciously think, oh, they're struggling now. But you have the same amount of games left, all the other teams, Hull and Ipswich, who commentary in my book was going to do better than them this season. And that's why we talk about confidence so much, don't we? In football, because otherwise we'd just say, well, there's so many games left to play. and then there's pressure from the owners. I just love the psychological thing about football, why people now think, oh, well, commentary are done now.
33:31We're only four games in. It's madness.
33:34Alan Shearer:Tammy Abraham had almost forgotten he'd gone to Villa. I mean, he scored one or two goals, obviously, when he joined last season, but he's not really had much of a look. And obviously there was Olly Watkins, the book Jackson as well now. So there is definitely a centre forward in there.
33:49Gary Lineker:We should see more of him. we should see more of him now I wonder why we're not well exactly that's what you'd think I mean maybe it was I get it with Oli Watkins being there him not getting too many opportunities I know they've got Nicholas Jackson too but you should see more of him now and if you don't then that tells you there's an issue he's not good enough if we don't because as you say we've seen enough of him to suggest there's definitely a player in there but there has to be a reason why we haven't seen him I was with him at Villa when we went down to the champ. And guys, he's got everything.
34:26He's got a good first touch for a big man. He holds it up. He can link play. And he can shoot in training. The thing is with Tammy, what I noticed is sometimes it's the composure. So when he was in the championship, he was scoring goals for fun. And then he went to Chelsea. He did really well, didn't he? And then he ended up at Villa. And then he went to Turkey, back to Villa. and I just want not me telling but he gets so many good opportunities but he snatches at a lot of things and if he would just have more composure I mean he's a really good player top player the top player but he's always been sort of second fiddle you know it'd be nice if he well obviously you've got Jackson there at Villa now so it's going to be difficult but scoring goals he can score goals all day he can you're saying there that he'd got everything
35:18Alan Shearer:but then you're saying he kind of fluffs his lines a bit in front of goals sometimes, he's not got the composure. So that is an element that he's missing. Yes, yes. Yeah, you're totally right there. But what I mean by that, he's got everything in terms of, so you know with the levels from, say, Championship, then to Premier League, and then when you would go to a Champions League, your reaction time has to be better, doesn't it? Yeah. So the defenders are faster and stronger and they read it a lot quicker. so the time in which you take to let off a shot he's still taking that amount of time sometimes like if he was in the championship or a lower half of the Premier League where if he sharpens that bit up against a better he will score goals and that's the bit he's not got as much time against better players in the Premier League Looking at the draw before we finish tie the rounds Fleetwood versus Arsenal Brilliant Great draw for them And then you've got Liverpool-Chelsea De Javi Alonso-Darby Possibly you could call that one Chelsea beat Leeds of course Didn't they In a nine goal thriller Earlier in the week We've got Fulham against Palace Bradford City Peterborough Man City or Norwich Versus Brighton Could Brighton knock out Both the Manchester clubs Bournemouth Vieston Villa Everton Newcastle Tough draw All away from home
36:43Gary Lineker:I'd say I looked at that And I thought But it's a tough one that is going there. Much prefer it to have been at Itz and James'. But there you are.
36:52Alan Shearer:Yeah. And Sutherland against Brentford as well. And I think this, in many ways, is a little bit like the FA Cup. I think once you get towards maybe the quarterfinals and you start thinking you've got half a chance to win it, then it's one of those two. You don't mind too much if... I mean, I shouldn't say this as a former footballer, but you don't mind too much when you go out to the big clubs, possibly this competition early because it does give you a chance. But it is also an opportunity to play players that you want to give a game to, isn't it? But don't forget, remember at this time of the season, it's still fitness.
37:28You're still not fit yet, are you? So you want to give as much fitness as possible. The players after this week, they're going on international break for three weeks. You know? It's madness. It's absolute madness. So yeah, there's going to be a little bit break there, but it's just I don't know I feel as though the League Cup over the years has become bigger and especially he's been promoting it being bigger because they won it a couple of seasons ago didn't you Al? As soon as Newcastle won it
37:56Gary Lineker:that was it it's a great competition I love it
38:00Alan Shearer:Alright if you're going to gloat about that Al tell me about Monday Oh
38:06Gary Lineker:dreadful you can't you can't have you can't have too many of those performances in a season I mean they just got battered they got bullied Leeds did to Newcastle what Newcastle were doing a year or two ago in terms of the bullying teams and going after teams and Leeds did that to Newcastle and absolutely battered us so yeah you don't need too many of them big game again you know I keep saying about this international break the big game at the weekend for Newcastle at home to Hull you do not want to go three weeks without getting the right result after what's happened on Monday night marching on together what about him he keeps sending those stupid messages after every Leeds goal Leeds Leeds Leeds Yorkshire Yorkshire Yorkshire alright
