In short
The Rest is Football (Micah Richards, Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker) covers: Chelsea vs Arsenal, Liverpool vs West Ham, plus Saturday’s wider Premier League results and title-race implications. Chelsea-Arsenal: discussion of Caicedo’s red card, whether it was harsh, and how Rhys James’ midfield role/Calm possession helped Chelsea; Anthony Taylor’s refereeing praised; result seen as fair for both. Liverpool-West Ham: Slot’s big call leaving Mo Salah out; Isak’s decisive finish; West Ham’s poor attacking and Paqueta’s ridiculous second yellow/red after dissent. Let's talk about a condition many people haven't heard of. And it turns out it's more common than you'd think. Peyronie's disease, or PD for short. PD can happen when scar tissue builds up under the skin of the penis. This can cause a curve or the bump during an erection, and for some men, lead to pain during intimacy and may impact mental health.
1:33It may also lead to anger and frustration, depression, lower self-esteem, and even withdrawal from sexual activity and physical intimacy. Because of this, some men could feel embarrassed or reluctant to talk about PD. The actual cause of PD isn't always known. In some cases, it may be linked to a minor injury or repeated injuries during sex or other physical activity. The good news is, PD is treatable. If you notice a curve with a bump, a trusted urology specialist can help diagnose it and walk you through your options, including non-surgical treatment. 3:21Alan Shearer:Hello and welcome to The Rest is Football with Micah Richards, Alan Shearer and me, Gary Lineker. Now, I know you two are actually really quite close together, even though you look like you're in entirely different places.
3:34Gary Lineker:I can hear him next door to me. Spend the whole day with him. You've loved it. You've absolutely loved it.
3:42Alan Shearer:He's been happy all day, guys. And let's explain, you're both doing match of the day two tonight. And the reason we do it in separate rooms is technical and for sound reasons and for editing reasons. So just, you're not falling out. That's what I'm trying to say. Not yet. We'll see. We're fine. We're good. We're good. Not yet.
4:03Gary Lineker:Happy birthday, old man. Thank you very much. You'll be getting a mention this evening.
4:07Alan Shearer:Well, apparently I was in vision. Because I went to the Crystal Palace game with my friend JD. and it was a good watch, but United somehow won and I'm not quite sure how they did it because they didn't play that great. But we'll come to that game in a little while. I had a big day out yesterday. I felt like a little bit weary. That's what we was waiting for. I thought you were playing now on your birthday. I was waiting for you to ask me, but yeah, so we'd celebrated it yesterday. Came out to this little restaurant, 14 seater, two Michelin stars in Soho called Humble Chicken. Absolutely spectacular.
4:40Alan Shearer:me and my mate we had birthdays very close together so we each had six guests and all my boys were there and let's say we went on a bit we went on a bit after lunch and probably consumed way too much but at this stage of life you don't know how many more chances you're gonna
4:57Gary Lineker:get so did you have a bit of a thick head this morning i don't get hangovers which is bizarre
5:02Alan Shearer:really i can feel a bit tired but i don't no i don't really get hangovers no lucky like that If you drink the right stuff, Al, it's okay. What, Negronis? Yeah, true. There was a few of those, a couple of whiskeys and lots of really nice red wine. So what benefits do you get from being 65 though now, Gaz? What do you get? I think I get a free rail card. But you used to get your pension, didn't you, at 65? I think he's gone up to 67. I think they've done that on purpose.
5:33Gary Lineker:Boss passes, how is that? Do you already have that?
5:35Alan Shearer:I think I was already eligible.
5:37Gary Lineker:all right you didn't did he get the bust of the game did he
5:40Alan Shearer:no no it's hard to get to sell out so did he take his half price I got three ones I was looked after really well blessed them right shall we get into it the first bite is delivered by Uber Eats and we're kicking off with dare I say a London derby a tasty one Chelsea versus Arsenal, it was quite cutthroat, particularly in the first half. And then red cards always change games. What did we make of the decision? Let's start with that, because obviously that makes a massive impact on the overall thing. When it happened in real speed, as you always say, guys, I didn't think it was that bad. And when they slowed it down, I thought, ooh, that's horrendous.
6:28So I know it's sort of sat on the fence, but I'm not in real time. I think, OK, London Derby, you're going to get them tackles. But when you slow it down and you see the way his foot is planted a little bit and the way his ankle goes, the referee is going to go to the monitor and give a red card, isn't he? You know, and he gives a yellow card on field. But I just...
6:50Alan Shearer:I don't think they should have slow motion for things like that. It's the same when you see still shots of people's feet. I mean, his foot, it wasn't raised. It was on the ground. It was a millisecond late for the ball. And slow motion makes it look terrible. So I understand exactly why they possibly overturned this decision. But I mean, really? I don't even think that would have been a foul in my day, let alone a red card. And it's just, I just think slow motion distorts what actually happens because that's like hit the ball, dum, dum. And he foot bounces on the ground. If he's got his foot in the air and above the ball, that used to be, you know, over the top, red card, definitely.
7:32Alan Shearer:but these ones now where they just I mean it looks terrible in slow motion I get it but when you see it and I watched it lots of times in normal speed it was actually just a fraction and it just like that and I don't know your thoughts Al you probably
7:45Gary Lineker:well I agree with you in terms of in your day and in my day yeah it wouldn't have been a red card it was probably a normal tackle but I think when you're challenged like that and you run the risk of giving the referee or the VAR the chance to send you off and I thought it was a bit naughty I thought it was high and I thought his foot was planted and it was well above the ankle but to see it was well above the ankle you had to put it on a freeze frame therefore in today's game you can't argue with the referee and him eventually however they got there him eventually giving the red card I just it was a red card yeah
8:24Alan Shearer:I mean I can see why they gave it but I honestly think that going for the ball it was an honest tackle there was no intent to harm anybody he's just gone in I don't think it was two players really quick one got there first it would have been a red card the other way probably if Kaysedo had nicked the ball first and then followed through so but I get it I get it and I wouldn't say it was the wrong decision but what I would say is that I think we need to look at this slow motion business you know when the referees see it and you see it and they show every act dead slow dead slow and anything that looks slow makes it look more deliberate than I think but anyway he went off I thought Chelsea did really well, actually, in the game.
9:04Gary Lineker:I thought it was a really scrappy, bitty, loads of fouls, loads of players going over pretending to be injured and hurt and trying to get others booked. It was a bit of a scrappy game all the way through like that. So that's why I thought it was just a stupid tackle, you know, inviting the referee to do that. And actually, I was really surprised that no one went in the second half as well because I thought at half-time, he might even even it up here. To his credit, Anthony Taylor, I thought he refereed it really, really well because it was a tough game to referee because of the actions of a lot of the players.
9:41Alan Shearer:Proper London derby, really, Micah. Yeah, proper. I'll explain it properly. But I thought tactically it was a really good game. Did you see, I don't know if you watched a game in full because when you're having a... On your birthday, having a few drinks. No, no, my birthday was yesterday. Today, I've watched football all day. I watched the whole game, yeah. Did you see Rhys James and what he was doing to Declan Rice he wouldn't allow him the whole team went man to man but more so than ever Rhys James on Declan Rice didn't let him get a sniff when there was trying to build up even when the ball went behind him I was looking is he going to go back into position but the task that he did on Rice was brilliant and then obviously when Kaiseido gets a red card he goes back into two in midfield and then it changes the whole game but I thought Rhys James was the best player on the pitch.
10:28I thought he was so calm in possession. I thought his way to pass was really good. His defensive nous, he got the ball and got them playing when they needed to as well. And he gets the assist, you know, for the goal. I just thought it was a perfect performance. When you look at midfield performances, okay, he's a right back or a wing back. But in there, he just looked. It looked easy for him. Just shows how talented
10:53Alan Shearer:he is though, doesn't it? The fact that he's played most of his career as the right-back and he goes in there and he looks like one of the best midfield players on a pitch playing against one of the best midfield players in world football at the moment and he's interested as you quite rightly said that Maresca's quite clever tactically isn't he he doesn't mind changing things around and depending on who they're up against he's amazing and I think he's under well you'll have to look at the question's going to be with Chelsea can they go and unwin the league I think they're a little bit short because I think other teams have better squads but if you look at any game, if you look at PSG in the Club World Cup you know, the trophies are the one last season on any game, they can beat anybody and I've said it for the last couple of weeks now, watching them I don't think it's enough to go the full way, but just every given day the manager, he just knows the tactics spot on and the players buy into it, you know, who thought Pedro was going to come back into the team after Neto did so well, Esteval on one side and Ganaccio did so well in midweek.
12:02And then you think, OK, I'll bring Pedro in, we're going to go man-to-man, we'll go really high and when I say it worked, they didn't win the game but until the red card, it was working perfectly.
12:13Gary Lineker:I thought it was a fair result actually. I think... Yeah, I think it's about right. Yeah, I didn't think Arsenal did enough to win the game against 10 men but I also think Chelsea did really, really well in terms of making it difficult and stopping a very good Arsenal team who have been the most consistent by a mile out of everyone. So, yeah, I thought it was a good, a fair result. And it was probably, when you look at the bigger picture, it was a decent point for both teams.
12:39Alan Shearer:Yeah, and also probably good for the league that Arsenal didn't win it in a way because you'd start to think, well, this is not going to be much of a title race, but it's still too early to say that, of course. but they could have they could have pinched it right at that that very end when that cross came over I mean Giorcarez was right behind Marino I think it was Timber just took it off him wasn't it was it Timber I think it was just
13:02Gary Lineker:just took it off Giorcarez you could see him pulling his neck back ready there and it just flicked past him by Timber it was yeah that was a tight one yeah it's going to be interesting to see how Arsenal because if you look at before the game you take a draw at Stamford Bridge all day it's just the manner that obviously them going down to 10 men. Have you got enough of them to go on and win the game? It didn't quite work out. But yeah, what was that? Three games in a week, it was always going to be tough for them, wasn't it?
13:31Alan Shearer:You said, Micah, that you don't think they're probably quite equipped in terms of the depth in certain positions, Chelsea, to win the title. But are they perhaps the biggest threat to Arsenal? Or do you still think City? I mean, City are conceding goals quite a bit. I mean, you know, last-ditch winner, obviously, yesterday. It'd be one of those two, wouldn't it? I mean, Liverpool back in the, you know, winning again, which psychologically will be important. Football's a weird sport, you know. It's so mad. Predictions, and we come out with big statements week in, week out. But, like, Arsenal are only five points clear.
14:09Alan Shearer:Yeah. You know, it's madness. And, man, we're talking about Man City have not played that well. I think Chelsea can challenge them. but I don't think they're enough I think Man City are still the ones who can challenge them all the way even though they're conceding easy goals for their standards and I say that because I've got someone like Haaland you know he didn't score against Leeds yesterday but Foden stepped up when you've got someone like Haaland who can normally score in every game that's why I think they'll compete in one about I think it was the last episode the episode before last that you were saying the other players at City got to step up they can't rely on it was after the Champions League wasn't it they can't just rely on Erling Haaland and lo and behold what a coach you are Micah we know what Philip Fogart could do though come on we've said it for years it's great to see him back to his best great it is and when he's in that central or central right position you know he's going to cause damage you know in terms of his passing his movement getting on the ball we've said it we've talked about it but then can you finish off the game we've seen it a couple years ago we don't play a year we're all expected him then to go on you know challenge for Ballon d 'Or it didn't quite happen but he's still a top Premier League player and he's getting back to his best form what I don't think helped him as well was the Euros when he was playing left and side and it didn't help him and the confidence comes back and then you know the problems that he's mentioned off the field as well but now he looks you know back to his best yeah he really does Alan thoughts on title race
15:45Gary Lineker:title yeah I haven't, I won't change my mind as yet. I think Chelsea will finish in the top four. I don't see them having quite enough to win the title.
15:55Alan Shearer:What's missing from them there? Because they've got a massive squad.
16:01Gary Lineker:Yeah, I don't know. I'm not 100 % convinced in centre-forward position. And I know they did really well today defensively with the two centre-halves. Not quite sure there either. but I think in midfield they're very strong in wide areas I think they're strong but yeah those two positions I would say but hey I didn't fancy them to win the Club World Cup when they won it so God that shows you what us pundits think but I think anyone going in against Chelsea will know they're going to have to play really really well against them and I know they've been a tad inconsistent I mean i.e. the result Sunderland at home when Sunderland beat them at Stamford Bridge it's results like that I think they'll have one or two of those on this season and that might cost them.
16:48Alan Shearer:They're a work in progress. Yeah. Okay, that was the first bite delivered by Uber Eats. Let's move on to Liverpool. Won a football match. We can give them some credit. There's been a tough old time for them. He made a couple of big calls. I was on my way back from the Crystal Palace Man United game. So I'll have to rely on you chaps to tell me, were they convincing?
17:12Gary Lineker:Not really. not until I mean the one they were crying out for a piece of quality and Isak produced that piece of quality in terms of his his finish
Read the full transcript
17:23Alan Shearer:were you pleased for him Alan? yeah
17:25Gary Lineker:that's gone it's gone actually when you you would have seen match of the day by the time this comes out I do think there were just little signs that they're going to have to get used to him and and also I guess it's a bit of both but they're going to have to play earlier balls into them because a lot of what is off the cuff Alex does you know I know it's a lot of it was in behind and balls and being behind but also it's it's off the cuff and spontaneous it's not just for him but for any strike you've got to get the ball into the box and early when you've got the opportunity to do it and they just gave one or two chances up to do that which I was thinking oh come on to get the best out of him and any forward you've got to you've got to do that and when they did it his half volley finish was a great flash it was a fantastic finish and that was the bit of quality that Liverpool needed I don't think it mattered about performance today for Liverpool and yeah you're right Arnaslott had to make a couple of big decisions and he did he left Mo Salah out and he had to win the game and I think with him winning it and with Isak scoring you would think it would give them a little bit of belief and confidence and I think they've got Sunderland at home next game which they're going well they're going really well yeah but it's at Anfield after on the back of an away win.
18:43Gary Lineker:So it was just about winning today. But I thought West Ham were poor, offered very little. Had one, I don't think they had one shot on target, West Ham, in the whole game.
18:53Alan Shearer:Bowen had a half-for-half chance at the end.
18:54Gary Lineker:Bowen at the end, just right at the end. I mean, Packard's heart was a stupid sending off. What was he doing? It was absolutely ridiculous, it was. Two yellow cards for descent. I mean, the foul he got booked for. He didn't even commit the foul. I think it was Fulkerr committed the foul and he was moaning about that and just wouldn't stop. And the referee was right to give him another yellow card, therefore a red card. It was absolutely stupid. West Ham, I thought, were really poor. But credit to Liverpool. They stopped them playing. They got the three points. And that's all that mattered for them today.
19:27Alan Shearer:Yeah, while you're on the subject of Lucas Paqueta, he's actually put out a tweet above the images posted by Sky Sports Premier League of him being sent off. He's gone, it's ridiculous to have your life and career affected for two years without any psychological support from the Federation. Perhaps this ridiculous behavior is just a reflection of everything I've had to endure and it seems have to continue enduring. I'm sorry if I'm not perfect. That's quite profound.
20:01Gary Lineker:I guess the Federation, he means the FA. Yeah, I would think. Not West Ham.
20:05Alan Shearer:No, Federation wouldn't be a football club. That would be. Yeah. and it was above Sky Premier League images of him being sent off. So I would imagine, yeah, he's... Yeah, but I understand his frustration. I remember at the time when he was going to get his move to potentially Man City. But if he gets sent off today for two yellow cards, you can't, you have to take responsibility for that. We backed you as pundits and whatnot and we said, well, hold on, he was worth X amount of money. He's been out of the game and now he's had to get himself. It's not really fair. so I understand that frustration but you don't need to get two yellow cards like what we need
20:43Gary Lineker:he's only just back from a ban as well for having five yellow cards isn't he since the beginning of the season so he's just back from a ban from that so I get his grievance with what gone on beforehand because he was found not guilty of the charges so I get that and understand that absolutely but you have to he has to own what happened today and he cost his team today
21:06Alan Shearer:two entirely different things but yeah, I understand what you're saying. Leaving Mo Salah out, it's quite a big call that, Micah. Yeah, but it is a big call, but it's necessary. One thing I want to say about Liverpool and Mo Salah, Mo Salah has not changed the way he's played. When I see Pundits now, and it's not digging up Pundit, I'm one myself, but he's not tracking runners. Mo Salah has never really tracked runners. you know that's what he does you might get him in the odd game or when he comes back and helps out or whatever it is and I remember last season Slott said he's got more of a role where he can stay a little bit higher the problem is he wasn't scoring as frequently as last season and that's it and if you're not scoring the manager has it within his rights to replace yes it's a big decision but the manager's job's on the line going away from home he probably thought you know I need a little bit more stability Al did that game but by the formation it looked like Sabozla was playing right was it is that correct yeah just a bit more running power you're away from home totally understand it you get the result and then you know he didn't come on in the end did he Al if I'm calculating that's not correct
22:23Gary Lineker:no he didn't come on no he didn't come on because I was watching the other game while I was watching that I was only across it but I've seen all the big incidents but I don't think it's a big problem guys and I've said this for a while it's just We need to get Mo Salah back scoring goals. I have every belief he will do that. At the moment, he's just going through a spell where things are not happening.
22:44Alan Shearer:And that happens to every striker, Alan. We've all been there. Oh, absolutely. We've all been there. And the really good ones come through it.
22:52Gary Lineker:We've also all been there. Once you go the other side of 30, it's like as soon as you have a bad game, it's because of your age. It is though, isn't it? It's like when you're 25 or 26, 27, you have a bad game. oh he's rubbish there but when you have a bad game over 30 is it catching up with him and I understand all of those questions and I totally agree with Biker in terms of he hasn't been scoring goals and he hasn't been playing well and when that happens the manager's got every right to leave you out and then when he leaves you out you have to get a result and they have done but we've been here before with Liverpool I think when they I did the game when they beat Real Madrid in the Champions League and I was like that's much more like it much more energy a much better performance and then I think after that then they get beat off Forest and then they go on and you think well okay so it has to what we saw today little bits of it it wasn't great it was just the result but slowly but surely it has to improve and going forward now for Liverpool
23:54Alan Shearer:and a clean sheet which was definitely needed I think
23:57Gary Lineker:yeah there were I mean West Ham could have still been there three or four hours playing that game of football and they wouldn't have scored they just never looked like scoring West Ham they were dreadful up front but Liverpool to be fair they'll say well they stopped them but I'm pretty sure West Ham didn't have one effort on target
24:14Alan Shearer:Which one of you did the Crystal Palace Manchester United game? Which one of you watched that or did you both watch it because it was the early game we both watched that I'll be interested to see what you're doing in terms of your analysis Palace was so dominant in the first half I mean United weren't very good at all they missed two two or three really really good chances They managed to get a penalty and we didn't really know what was going on in the ground. It was a double touch, obviously, at some point. But he managed to score on his second effort. It was nice because I saw Mitchell Thomas I used to play with at Tottenham.
24:47Alan Shearer:And Brightie was there as well, obviously, because Brightie's always with Steve Parrish in the game. And we were saying at halftime, they're going to pay. They're going to pay for that. And they did almost immediately. But United won the game, which they'll be delighted about. But I looked at them and I still looked and I thought, they're really short. I mean, I know Kuni was out and Sesko's injured at the moment as well. So they were a bit short at the top. But I just, I mean, I did this thing. Before the game, I looked at the two teams. And it's great when you're actually at a game. It's nice to be able to go on to watch matches and stuff more nowadays.
25:26Alan Shearer:So I looked at the two teams and I said to myself, and this would be a question you'd have always asked the other way round. I asked myself the question, how many Man United players will get into Crystal Palace's team? And it's probably the wrong time to say this because United won the game. But I only had about two, maybe three. Yeah. Palace were very good in the first. I'll tell you, Adam Walton. Boy, he can play. I was doing all my analysis on Adam Walton and then United go and score and he got to give United a little bit of credit. No, absolutely. The only United might have crumbled there, but they stayed in the game and they've got results.
26:04Gary Lineker:No, no, I've just seen the analysis is, Gaz, is that how poor Man United were in the first half in terms of lack of effort, lack of intensity, lack of closing down. And then Esmila Sarr went off injured, and I think that was a big blow for Palace. It was a big blow for them. He took a heavy knock on his ankle, he twisted it, and then once he went off and the second half I think Amorans got stuck into his team at half time and said unless you up the intensity and the effort and the work rate and the closing down because this team will tire because of European football we played on Thursday evening and I think that's exactly what happened so you saw a different Man United team in terms of effort and closing down from the first half to the second half and eventually I know they got the two set pieces but that was the big difference for me.
26:58Gary Lineker:But I agree with you. I thought Man United were terrible in the first 40 minutes or so. But second half, I thought they were the better team and Crystal Palace were the ones that looked very leggy after that,
27:10Alan Shearer:which I guess is understandable because,
27:12Gary Lineker:and you'll hear Oliver Glasner say that they missed an opportunity in the summer in terms of signings because they were going to have European football and they could have got another two or three in to help them along. and I think that's probably what will cost them a higher league place than what they could have finished this season is that having those games on a Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday is a tough ask on them.
27:35Alan Shearer:I actually, because he said that in the post-match conference, didn't he? Or in post-match interviews and I actually broke that news to Steve Parrish. How did he take that? He said it's fine. He said, I'll take it. He said, I understand what he's saying and managers always want but I would say and this is not what Steve said let's make this very clear I would say it's Crystal Palace you know it's a lovely small ground and it's you know and they're punching massively above their weight they're not Manchester United Liverpool Arsenal Tottenham they're not one of those that can go out and spend absolute fortune so when they do recruit they need to do it wisely and I think by and large they have they have they have yeah
28:22Gary Lineker:well as a manager you always want a bigger better squad to give you yourself the individual and the team a better chance of succeeding so I get it from both but I still think with their first choice 11 out then they're a match for anyone by the way Crystal Palace they really are
28:41Alan Shearer:they were really really good in the first half anyway let's take a break when we come back we'll discuss some of Saturday's games This episode is brought to you by WISE. 30:47Alan Shearer:Welcome back to The Rest is Football with Alan Shearer, Michael Richardson, me, Gary Lenica. Let's discuss Saturday's matches. We sort of briefly mentioned Manchester City. That was a big win for them. It was a big win in the sense that, you know, having gone two up and then if they'd have dropped points from that position at home to Leeds, that could have been quite damaging for them. So that goal that we talked about before, Phil Foden, which was an absolutely brilliant goal, was also, I think, exceptionally important. It was just the fact that they rested 10 players, didn't they, against Liverpool in midweek in the Champions League.
31:21And we talked about that. And I didn't have a problem with it. But then when, you know, Leeds come and get back to 2-2, fully deserved, worked really hard. Man City could have scored three or four in that first down. But the, I don't know, the effort from Leeds to come back in that second half, so close. And then the little bit of magic from Foden. You know, Pep's almost questioning himself, saying, I probably shouldn't have changed it. But now, like I said before, five points behind. It's justified, isn't it? Although, you know, Man City have got Real Madrid in the Champions League. Away next, it's difficult.
31:56Tough game. If Man City can... Because what's happening with Man City? They have a couple of good games. It feels like they're back and then they have a bad result and then it's almost like, okay, they're not back. But then they've got quality on the pitch.
32:09Alan Shearer:Arland now, Foden. Doku's been excellent this season. You say Erling Arland, but he's in a goal. goal drought now, isn't he? I mean, crikey, he's not scored.
32:16Gary Lineker:Well, he hasn't scored for three, is it?
32:22Alan Shearer:Fellas, go on. It's like a major shock, isn't it, when he doesn't score a goal? It's extraordinary. It is mad, but the fact is, if they were to go on a run, then, yeah, they've got a challenge all the way, having not played at their absolute best up until this point.
32:42Gary Lineker:I think well there's only been Arsenal hasn't there that's been consistent that's why they're what five points clear so I mean Chelsea when you look at their result against Sunderland Man City as we know Liverpool as we know Villa I guess have been pretty consistent which is why they're in the top four but in terms of who we thought for the title there's only really Arsenal that have been consistent
33:06Alan Shearer:I mean the chasing pack is very very tight very very tight indeed you want to talk about Newcastle Alan a way win not only an away win but an emphatic one
33:17Gary Lineker:that's what Newcastle are all about that performance I think but you're thinking when's it going to happen away from home especially going to Everton after their result at Old Trafford on Monday night it was it was a great performance and a great win there
33:31Alan Shearer:and also after a away tie in Europe against obviously decent opposition and Marseille
33:38Gary Lineker:as well you have to lose in that game in the way they did I know he changed the goalkeeper he said Nick Pope was injured whether he was or not I don't know whether he's protecting him or what I don't know but that was a big call I think and putting Ramsdale in and much more like it much great energy big centre forward I thought was very good he took his goal superbly well
34:00Alan Shearer:it was such a lovely I loved that clever finish wasn't it I loved that little deft little lob
34:05Gary Lineker:and I also say he's been a brilliant signing Malik Chow for Newcastle it's been superb he has a couple of goals as well so big performance and a big win in exactly what Newcastle needed with two home games coming up they've got Spurs on Tuesday at home and they've then got Burnley at home on Saturday so big two games if they would take six points from that then just never know again they'd be back in the hunt for the top five
34:34Alan Shearer:it's lovely to see him with a little smile on his face isn't it Mike must be in a good mood all day he's been in a great mood all day not put a fun wrong obviously not put a fun wrong fantastic stuff played well though didn't
34:49Gary Lineker:they Newcastle
34:50Alan Shearer:do you want us to give them a bit of credit Alan don't just leave it to me you can say yourself no they played really well I mean it helps when you get off to that kind of start doesn't it you score a goal that quickly but I was surprised by Everton because they'd done so brilliantly to win at United with 10 men like said and then and then yeah they look like one of those days we've all had them where it's it's not your day but it was I thought I thought Newcastle had great energy considering you know Marseille tough place to play is that enough for you do you need any any thank you
35:24Gary Lineker:we can move on now what did I tell you about Voldemort what did I tell you about him I said don't panic I don't even think we did it on the pod I think this was in the group I said don't worry he's a good player and now look
35:35Alan Shearer:he's only young as well exactly and he's got this to come back as well he's got five Premier League goals it's not bad because you know new player coming in particularly the boots he was having to fill
35:47Gary Lineker:the Newcastle has no doubt they've had to adjust to a slightly different style of play because of him and hopefully that's the start of a good run for Newcastle in the league hold on before you go on does anything that coincides with Hall being back and Livermanto also possibly changing the fullbacks up and down defensively Danny Murphy
36:12Alan Shearer:last night did his analysis on not that I watched it last night I watched it this morning he did his analysis on the two fullbacks oh did he I fell asleep at that point
36:22Gary Lineker:yeah we could have done on last weekend against when they played City they made a huge difference as well I think he played I don't think he played Lewis Hall in midweek against Marseille but they were both obviously there yesterday again for Evan and they do Micah they're two very good players and they make a massive difference for the balance for Newcastle.
36:40Alan Shearer:Let's move slightly south, isn't it? Sunderland from Newcastle. Yeah. Yeah, slightly south. I mean, what are they doing? I mean, unbelievable again, really, wasn't it? I mean, 2-0 down and then to come back and win. Incredible. Sixth in the table in the Premier League. I mean, it's not five games in, are we? But, you know, it's amazing.
37:02Gary Lineker:The Derby game's in two weeks' time, I think it is. coming up two weeks two weeks time at Sunderland yeah at Sunderland I'm not sure yet whether they've had any clearance whether they can keep hold of all their players before going to the African Cup of Nations
37:18Alan Shearer:you're going to that one aren't you
37:21Gary Lineker:with a bit of luck the six or seven they'll have to be called up and leave before the derby but I suspect they might get leave and then play in the game and then be able to to go over there but yeah two weeks time did you hear I don't know I was watching that game Sunderland on TV and I was thinking the crowd when Sunderland got their first goal to make it 2-1 the crowd it's like the way they've rolling them on was unbelievable well when they used
37:48Alan Shearer:to play at Roka Park they used to say the Roka Roar can you remember that? are you old enough to remember that? I am I played at Roka Park yeah I played at Roka Park amazing atmosphere and Stadium of Light seems to be similar but they're doing so brilliantly Micah excellent you know I know we've talked about them put Xhaka do you see Xhaka's pass the way he looked like he was going one way and then reversed it and then it was Traorio put it away wasn't it they've got different ways of playing they can press but they can drop off into a low block if need be but they also can play midfield with legs and then they've got people off the bench that can make a difference I mean it's it's strange to see a team that's just come up doing so well but deservingly and just when you think they're out they'll just come back and come back and come back again this what they're doing this season is nothing short of sensational I really hope they can carry it on because what a story it would be and we talked about him
38:46Gary Lineker:Do you really really really hope they can carry it on do you? No because yes I do because I do It would be great I really really do
38:54Alan Shearer:I totally agree It would be great for the league because no one expected it It would be great Come on Hal It would be great for football in this country Come on Al wouldn't it come on wouldn't it
39:05Gary Lineker:it'd be bloody amazing yeah fantastic but what I will what I will say is for the manager to bring that many new players in and then get them all to work together and understand what he wants and how he wants to play and do all that so he deserves great credit for the shape that he's got and for the intensity and for the understanding that they've all got you know with so many coming together
39:28Alan Shearer:let's finish on a tough week for Tottenham obviously they lost the London Derby last week. They put up a decent fist of it, I think, in Paris. I mean, they're playing against obviously the Champions League winners. But then obviously they got off to a terrible start in the game. I mean, I must say Harry Wilson's finish. I know the keeper's cocked up big time. I mean, why is he not hooping? You just think he'd hoof it in the stand. But he didn't. But I mean, that was a hell of a first time. I mean, he made something that was actually not that easy, He looked really easy, that finish. Do you really think it was that?
40:05I thought that wasn't easy. I thought that's one of the easier.
40:09Alan Shearer:This is going from a defender. Wow, do you? But the first time to have the awareness and the wherewithal, to know everything around you, to evaluate everything and know I've got to hit it immediately. Yes, I agree with that. And it was just technically perfect. And he sent it up. And you'd have to aim that well outside the far post with that left foot curler and it actually went, which is why I liked it the most, it went absolutely dead central in the middle of the goal. It was that perfect.
40:41Gary Lineker:I didn't see the game because I was at Mumford & Sons concert in Newcastle. Were you? Yeah, I was. What's he laughing at?
40:52Alan Shearer:No, it just sounds like Undertakers, which obviously I'll probably need to. Now I'm 65. What are you laughing at, Micah? me going to a concert he loves to sing song you were just random out of nowhere I went to a concert I was just going to say
41:07Gary Lineker:I didn't see the game because that was the late game but I saw Thomas Frank's quotes about having a pop at the Spurs fans for booing Vicario
41:17Alan Shearer:do you think that was wise? I get it he said basically he said it's unacceptable for the fans to boo he said he mentioned Vicario and he also mentioned a little bit about the end I'm not sure that I mean I think he's super smart we like Thomas and I think motion sometimes they're running a little bit but you know they're paying fans they're allowed to show their disappointment
41:41Gary Lineker:yeah but he's got to protect his players no he's got I agree I agree with
41:45Alan Shearer:that yeah I agree with that he's got to look after his
41:48Gary Lineker:players and he realises he's going through a sticky spell at the minute and I think for him to come out and protect them and look after them he's doing that for the dressing room because he knows I think he has to do that
42:00Alan Shearer:yeah state of the league as well you win two games on the bounce you're back in the top five it's so tight
42:07Gary Lineker:yeah well let's hope they don't win the next one because they're playing Newcastle on Tuesday night
42:15Gary Lineker:are you going to play well? yes I am yeah yeah I am
42:20Alan Shearer:we should have a word on Villa as well because if you remember we all said it won't stay like this but they had a really tough start to the season and Emery's been around there now quite a while and you start to think oh you know because he is so demanding and full on but he's really turned them around I mean they're not battering teams but they're winning football matches that become very difficult to beat again and seven wins in eight I mean that is that is really good form H you know when you're whispering mate you know the listeners and the viewers we can see you and we can hear you No, but we always edit that out, Micah.
43:01Alan Shearer:We normally edit that out, Micah. Come on.
43:04Gary Lineker:Especially when he... Some people can't hear him even when he's a yard away. Remember fucking Ribaldi. He can't hear him, can he? Who? Who was that?
43:15Alan Shearer:Ribaldi. Bring back Ribaldi. What a player he was, by the way. Do you know what? After that, I actually, I went on Google and I went and tried to find a player in the world called Ribaldi. And I couldn't find one. I've got it.
43:33Alan Shearer:We should finish every episode with a mention of one of the greats, Rebellion. Just quickly, guys, Watkins didn't start. He played with sort of Marlon up front with Rodgers. Didn't really work out until Watkins came on the pitch. I actually thought Wolves were decent today. They had some really good opportunities down the right-hand side, Villa's left in the first half, couldn't capitalise upon them. And in the end, Villa's quality just shone. Well, you've given some encouragement for producer John, our Wolves fan. No, yeah, no, there was a lot better. The only thing is, sometimes when they're defending, they go a little bit too deep.
44:20You know, I know they're trying to cling on for a point and after they played so well. and then, you know, Kamara goes and bangs one in the top corner for all your hard work, you think, you know, oh my God. But you've got to get out. You've got to get out. You've got to get Harry up the pitch. But it was encouraging signs. We don't probably expect Wolves to stay up, but they played a lot better today, I would say.
44:43Gary Lineker:Tell you who deserve a mention today as well. Brighton, by the way. Brighton going to Forest, wasn't it? They're on a good run as well, Brighton, eh?
44:51Alan Shearer:Yeah. I mean, it's so tight. I mean once you get apart from Arsenal right down to about 15th I think it is tight yeah okay chaps well I hope tonight's show goes well by the time this episode goes out I'll check it out I can't promise you I'll stay awake what time are you on? I don't know is it half ten is it Mike? it's 10.35 tonight oh a bit later you know your long john's online but I will I will watch tomorrow morning so have a great show cheers guys so goodbye from me goodbye from me goodbye from me
45:26Gary Lineker:have a great week
