Yes, I'm presenting this week a little bit of a quiz again, boys. Yes, Sal. Got your pen and paper ready? So wait, because you lost three out of three, you've now gone to the host. I know how this works, Alan. we'll see how difficult it is then Micah shall we oh crikey I'm dreading this and Micah's got his oh no he's taking his glasses off I don't want me to put them on how do you want me to be how do you want me well I'll let Gaz decide because you're the one that's going to be maybe cheating
0:44Alan Shearer:if he feels that that necessity to win then so be it
0:47Gary Lineker:I'll be keeping an eye on him by the way because I don't really I can just yeah so anyway the quiz lads yes the quiz is Spanish players with the most appearances in the Premier League. Oh, Spanish players. Spanish players. Spanish. Okay.
1:05Alan Shearer:God, there's been a lot. I think this is quite easy. Not easy, but... Well, it's easy to name 10 Spanish players, Micah, but getting 10 in the top 10. In the order, yeah.
1:14Gary Lineker:It's a lot easier for me because I've got the list this week, so I'm all right. All right, who wants to go first? Shall we let our guest competitor go first, Micah? Yes, we can do that.
1:24Alan Shearer:Oh God, I'm going to say something really stupid. I'm going to go with someone that I think Michael would go with immediately. Because he was at City for quite a long time and he was one of the players that made a big difference when he came in. So I'm going to go David Silva.
1:44Gary Lineker:Yeah, great shout guys. David Silva is definitely in there. And David Silva is... I'm writing this down as well. fourth on the list fourth David Silva fourth David Silva appearances 309 wow 309 he's fourth on the list
2:03Alan Shearer:what a player Micah oh I mean and likes a beer I love a beer I'm a little bit disappointed for him though that he didn't arrive at Man City a little bit later because he was the one who really started when he had him and Tevez and then Aguero. Aguero came a little bit later, but David Silva, he was the one who should have been playing with top players from the very start. I know he was at Valencia, but he was Barcelona, Real Madrid level. And I thought at the time, sometimes we let the standard down. So I was, he never won a Champions League at Man City. He left before they'd won it. I think. I think that's right.
2:49Gary Lineker:Yeah, it was. UC didn't play with the top players, yet they end up with nuggets like you.
2:57Gary Lineker:Can I say that as a presenter, can I? You can say whatever you want. Ah, that's all right. We make the rules, don't we? But yeah, I just feel as though he was so good, he should have been playing for the Man City of today or a real Madrid or Barcelona. So that's how good he was. Right, your pick, Micah. Ooh. Well, I'm going to go with another David. But I'm going to go with David De Gea. David De Gea. Yeah, David De Gea. He's got to be big. Goalkeeper, he's... Come on. If this is not in the top three, I'll retire from the quiz now. Ooh. Is that a promise? A promise. Go on. So the quiz will not go on if he's not in the top three?
3:42Gary Lineker:It will. It just means I'm one. You're right, Micah. He's number one. Of course he is. He is number one.
3:49Alan Shearer:415 appearances. He's another one, actually, isn't he? Of those goalkeepers, players, actually, who've left Man United and done pretty well. Had a great season, didn't he? In your old stomping ground, Micah. Fiora dida. And he is again this season. He's been playing brilliantly. So that just shows you, doesn't it, when a club's a bit rotten. To be fair, though, he struggled when he first came into the league. Everyone was talking about his height. And then after about a year, 80 months, he just turned into an absolute machine. His agility was just ridiculous. He had absolutely everything as a goalkeeper.
4:30And when I let him go, I know he'd made some high profile errors, but he was a top goalkeeper. Top goalkeeper, he really was.
4:39Alan Shearer:Right. David Silva first. And you said he came from Valencia. So I'm going to go with another player that came, I think from Valencia Juan Matta obviously played more than one club might help I don't know
4:53Gary Lineker:yeah I'm going to give you that guys Juan Matta is in there he's number seven actually is he oh yes Juan Matta 278 appearances Chelsea and Manchester United yep you remember he did the the Euros with us didn't he yeah came in for the final
5:14Alan Shearer:didn't he And I thought he dealt with it really well because obviously there was a very biased panel that night wanting England to finally win something. And I thought he handled that situation of enjoying Spain's defeat, but being pretty respectful of the fact we were all broken hearted again. Who did the final? Gazz, me, you, Matza. Who was the other? I can't remember because he was doing comms, wasn't he, Al? Rio. It's Rio, wasn't it? Rio. Rio that was it yes Rio yeah yeah Alan was on comms yeah but once again it didn't happen for us but yeah he was lovely footballer I'm mad he's silky wasn't he archetypally Spanish wasn't he oh yes I thought in the way he played football so well I'm doing alright you're alright
6:04Gary Lineker:you've got two out of two guys I'm back onto you big mix I don't know if to save the ones that I definitely know till last I'll go Fabregas
6:15Alan Shearer:I was going to go in Sesk Sesk Fabregas always used to beat me to young player of the year Tossa is that right always Sesk Fabregas tough choice it was me Sesk Waza and Ronaldo good luck with that one Mike it was only you
6:40Gary Lineker:could get aware of that by the way but yes he's on the list he's actually second so you've got one and two make a 350 appearances Arsenal and obviously Chelsea
6:53Alan Shearer:made a good start boys yeah good start it's like these these things are always quite they're not bad with the first few names the obvious ones I'm gonna go
7:03Gary Lineker:just before you just before you start can we just revisit Big Meeks' comment there he used to beat me to player of the year is that what is that what you said Young, young player. Fucking hell. Why did he do that so?
7:17Alan Shearer:Don't forget when he burst on the sea now.
7:20Gary Lineker:I just had to clear that up then. Hold on. Just chuck the names out there again who you said. Cesc Fabregas, Wayne Rooney. Ronaldo. And Big Mix.
7:34Alan Shearer:I have no chance. Oh, dearie me. Sorry, carry on. And he was only just pipped. Then what happened after that? Gareth Bale turned into an absolute monster. I was like that. What chance of a god.
7:52Gary Lineker:Oh, brilliant. Anyway, yeah, we need one more before we take a break, guys. And it's back to you, Gaz.
7:59Alan Shearer:I'm going to go with another player that played at Chelsea.
8:05Alan Shearer:Or shall I? Yeah.
8:07Gary Lineker:Azpilicueta. Yes. well done guys that's Billy Quetta actually so now he's actually third guys 3-4 so now you've got the top four
8:17Alan Shearer:yeah I think Mike has mentioned my other two that I was going to mention he's got those two they were my kind of top five thoughts I'm going to have to think about after I'm going to start struggling now he was a good player by the way wasn't he tough warrior wasn't he really tough reliable and he could play different roles along the back couldn't he
8:38Gary Lineker:yeah he was very very good excellent anyway good half boys let's take a little break and we'll be back after
8:49Gary Lineker:welcome back to The Rest is Football with me Alan Shearer Gary Lineker and Micah Richards it's quite easy this presenting Lark isn't it yeah it's a doddle Al it's a doddle better be quiet I might make a Rick soon anyway we've got we've got five of them and it's over to you big meeks I think it's going to get a little bit tougher. Well, it will get tougher this half.
9:10Alan Shearer:Yeah, definitely now. I'm struggling. I can think of players, but I'm not sure.
9:14Gary Lineker:I'm going to go with... What are you looking at? What's going on here, Al?
9:17Alan Shearer:My list in the order. Okay, let you off.
9:23I'm going to go with... Pepe Reina.
9:29Alan Shearer:Oh, Reina. Goalkeeper! They're never injured!
9:33Gary Lineker:Yes, he's in. He's fifth as well. So you've got top five now you have. You're flying, you boys. Five, was he quite high?
9:42Alan Shearer:Yeah. Right, over to me. Back over to you, Gaz. Well, he definitely played for two clubs. Was he there a lot? Was he there enough, though?
9:51Gary Lineker:Mikel Arteta. Mikel Arteta is there, Gaz. Yeah, I thought you were going to say someone else. When you said two clubs, I thought you were going to say someone else. Well, he did two clubs.
10:03Alan Shearer:He did Arsenal and Everton, didn't he? He did. Mikel Teta. Plus, if you'd have said no, I was going to add managerial on it. Yeah.
Read the full transcript
10:12Gary Lineker:284 appearances, Everton and NRC. Where was he? He was sixth. So you now have the top seven.
10:21Alan Shearer:Yeah.
10:21Gary Lineker:You've got three left to go. On to you, Micah. I'm going to go with...
10:30Fernando Torres.
10:32Alan Shearer:Torres. Chelsea, Liverpool, another two clubs. Chelsea, Liverpool, surely.
10:37Gary Lineker:Well, that's the one that I thought Gary was going to say because the two clubs, Liverpool and Chelsea, we have our first error. Oh! Oh, it's an open for Yaz. Oh, it's a disaster. Oh, my word. He's not in the list. He's not in the top 10. He's 11th, Micah. Oh, 11th. 212 appearances, Liverpool and Chelsea. He's 11th.
11:06Alan Shearer:oh my word if I get this right I can't I've got a chance here could be a good debut this for you guys and I've got someone I've got someone in my head that wouldn't probably if it was starting games wouldn't be him but I think coming off the bench he's done a lot as well and he's obviously played at different clubs although he went abroad for a little while back home to take the lead
11:30Gary Lineker:Mr Lineker
11:31Alan Shearer:I'm going to go with Adama Traore. Adama Traore.
11:37Gary Lineker:That is a great shout. Is it though? Are you winding me up? Adama Traore is in there, guys. Well done. I love it. He is eighth, believe it or not. Eighth. Traore, eighth. 252. Villa, Middlesbrough and Wolves and Fulham.
11:57Alan Shearer:Yeah, loads of clubs. That's why I went loads of clubs. I did not expect that one. Did you not think he'd be in the top 10? I just think sub appearances as well, Micah, and four clubs. I wouldn't have had him down. No, that's a great shot.
12:11Gary Lineker:Then it gets being doing his homework, see?
12:13Alan Shearer:No, but how can you do your homework?
12:16Gary Lineker:Well, Spanish. You should be ahead of your Spanish players.
12:19Alan Shearer:Well, Spanish players. A few Spanish players. I've got another one.
12:23Gary Lineker:Micah, if you get this one wrong, you're done.
12:25Alan Shearer:I'm actually struggling to start to think of them, apart from the obvious ones that have not been here that long. Any clues going, Alan? You want clues? You've won three out of three and you want clues?
12:35Gary Lineker:The last two players both played for two clubs.
12:39Alan Shearer:Oh, no, don't do that to me. That's a clue. Two clubs. I know I'm going to go four. I've just thought of one. I was actually struggling to think of any more Spanish players, which is ridiculous because there's been so many. I've just got one. What are we? Are we? We've got nine and ten, right?
12:54Gary Lineker:Is that correct? Nine and ten to go, yeah. Toughest ones. We've got the top eight. That's not bad, is it? Yep. Top eight, boys. Oh, disaster. Disaster struck. Big Meeks is on the ropes. I don't know where to go. You've got him going, guys. You've got him. If he gets this one, he's doomed. He's gone.
13:12Alan Shearer:No rush, Micah. No, no rush. Don't worry. It's a podcast. These lulls in words, you know. Yeah. And it'll sort it out, don't worry.
13:23I'm struggling, guys.
13:25Gary Lineker:Now the clock's going back on Saturday. Hurry up. I'll go Perez. Which Perez? The one who played for Newcastle, your boy. Ayose Perez. He did play for two clubs, Leicester. Newcastle and Leicester. Oh, Leicester. Yeah, Leicester. Did you forget about Leicester as well? Yeah. Micah, he is 10th. You've scraped in. Oh! No! No!
13:51Alan Shearer:He was one of mine as well. He was one of mine. I've got two. I had two left and he was one of them. To be honest, I don't want to take credit for that. That was just a guess. That was a guess.
14:02Gary Lineker:Still, though, guys, if you get this one right, the competition is yours. This is to win, right? This is to win the competition. Your first one. What are we to start?
14:15Alan Shearer:I'm just going to belt it out. Go on. Are you ready, Micah? Go on.
14:21Gary Lineker:Marcus Alonso. Marcus Alonso is...
14:28Gary Lineker:in the list of 20 but he's not in the list in top 10
14:37Alan Shearer:I can't think of any more
14:39Gary Lineker:back over to you Big Mix to get yourself a level this is a disaster this is a disaster it all started so well then we go to a playoff if you get this one did he play another club? Hector Bellerin Hector Bellerin only played for one club played for Arsenal I'm trying to give you a clue I give you a clue and you're still fucking useless. Bellerin, unfortunately, is not in the top 10. Bellerin is actually 13th, 183 appearances. Oh!
15:10Alan Shearer:I thought of Bellerin. I'm struggling to think of Spanish players now. I can think of one. Another chance for Gaz to take the title. I can think of one because I always loved his name. It was an angelic name. it's Angel Rangel Rangel Rangel from Swansea Rangel I'm just thinking of Spanish players now that's all I can do I've no idea how many games he played
15:36Gary Lineker:guys he is on the list which list not on the list he's in the top 20 but he's not on that he's not on the list okay I've got it now have you yes you need it midfield Maestro oh he could be onto something oh wait wait wait you said two clubs no clothes he said two clubs oh I was I was going to say can I say I was going to say or not you give Gaz their idea if it's wrong but yeah you can I was gonna I was gonna say Rodri but he's not playing for two clubs it's up to you are you going Rodri no by the look of your face that is someone who's not in the top 10 so I don't want to go Rodri
16:21Alan Shearer:I can't wait for you to go someone else and then I get it right with Rodri.
16:30Gary Lineker:You've forgotten that loan spell, he had it, Leicester. Might be a good one to miss for me. It's a tough one, this. Top five or six or seven were all right, but it's tough after that. What about someone absolutely left? Do you remember Romeo, who was at Chelsea and went to Southampton and was just there and it was unbelievable for a couple of seasons? Didn't he have three clubs?
16:53Alan Shearer:Or did he play for three clubs? Stop trying to help him out, because he doesn't need help. Wait a minute, did he play for two clubs? At least two clubs, or two clubs?
17:02Gary Lineker:I've given you enough clues, Micah. Is that your answer? Do you want it to be my answer? Oh, for the sake of the pun, it's my answer, yes. It's the answer, come on. Your answer, Micah Richards, is correct.
17:18Alan Shearer:So, Drew, how do we decide to win our next one together?
17:21Gary Lineker:Next one to get one. Romeo, Micah Richards, yeah. Chelsea and Southampton, he was ninth on the list. I wouldn't have got that. 239 appearances. I didn't know that the last two I got were just purely guesses. So how would we decide this? So we've got the top 10, we've got the 11th and we've got 13th. So we've got Torres 11th and we've got Bellerin 13th. If either of you can get 12 or 14, you're going to win
17:52Alan Shearer:I'm going to go with the only other Spanish player I could think of at the top of my head at the moment with Nacho Monreal
17:58Gary Lineker:Nacho Monreal is the answer that wins you the competition Gary
18:04Alan Shearer:he's the only Spanish player I could think of a couple that I knew it wasn't but oh Mike he was actually 12th
18:13Alan Shearer:187 appearances for Arsenal he was going to be my next guess actually but when Micah got that I wouldn't have got the Micah you've let yourself down
18:22Gary Lineker:you've let your family down you've let the country down again the winner is Gary Lineker
18:29Alan Shearer:well done boys tough one wasn't it towards the end no I mean honestly I was genuinely genuinely struggling to think I'm actually Spanish players guys you deserve that because my last two guesses there were guesses the early ones I knew but the yeah the last two were just rubbish I was just plucking names out of anywhere.
18:50Gary Lineker:Yeah, the ones also in the top 20 were Rodri Campo. Rodri's in there, was he? Yeah, it was Enrique Gita and Pablo Funals. Yeah, it was a tough one towards the end, wasn't it?
19:04Alan Shearer:Do you know what? I was in my mind until you said two players and obviously he's not even in the top 20 with Santi Cazorla. That was the other one I was thinking. Oh, Santi Cazorla. Cazorla, yeah, he's not in the top 20 now. Really? That was a surprise. good shout well done Al
19:18Gary Lineker:yeah good quiz that boys well done Gary Lineker so that's it from the rest is football goodbye from me
19:25Alan Shearer:goodbye from me and goodbye from me have a great rest of the week whatever's left of it thank you
